Editorial Review

Along with spiritual brother and surf buddy Jack Johnson, Garret "G. Love" Dutton has quietly but reliably lead a campaign for laidback but funky blues and R&B- inspired folk music. Now recording for Johnson's Brushfire label, the Philadelphia native stays tactfully on course for Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Garrett Dutton has soul
This is G Love's strongest album to date, and i write this even after his new and enjoyable effort "Lemonade" has been released.
5-0 out of 5 stars Momma says G. is BOSS
FUNKY, Funny, folksy, from Philly...what more could i ask for? Oh yeah, Bluesy! Sounds like me. Ok,so I'm old enough to be Garret's mother.I found the 1994 G.Love and SS CD for $1. at a Flea Mkt recently.I was hooked and went out and bought the rest (retail). Hustle is my fav so far.He incorporates so many different sounds and does it so well.I rock every morning to work w/G. or Jack J (where I first heard of G.) and it's heaven when they're together.
4-0 out of 5 stars Raping Blues
For those of you already acquainted with G Love and Special Sauce I say this:this album fits in with his previous work.Lyrically and stylistically the songs are closest to Philadelphonic - and he even closes with a solo acoustic blues song very similar to "Gimme some Lov'n."For those who are G Love fans and enjoy his past work, this record will not disappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Greg Brown's Best
Many of us think this is Greg Brown's best album. Reasonable minds can differ, of course, but they have to get around the extraordinary imagery of the title cut, the plaintive story sketched in "Laughing River" and the deceptively simple melody line of "Spring Wind."
5-0 out of 5 stars Great voice, great music,, great imagery...
Ah, I love this guy!Brown's voice can go from back-of-the-bar room gravely to plaintative soprano...The music goes from folky to country to bluesy and is always great. The imagery in his songs are fantastic too -- some creepy rural themes, like the soundtrack to an Andrew Wyeth painting (ie. "Sleeper".)The song "Dream Cafe" makes me feel like I'm in an open air restaurant in Arizona...Which is odd because I've never been to Arizona...Case in point, this guy can do imagery...

4-0 out of 5 stars Clarence Carter CD review
Love the CD--good music, fun lyrics.Makes you want to get up and move.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good songs, sad production . . .
Clarence Carter has a wonderful voice that really oozes soul of the Southern variety, and he's in not really in bad form here. The songs (for the most part) are solidly written and veer from heartfelt ballads of love ("I Was In The Neighborhood") to his infamous lustful tales ("Strokin'") - not all are great, but there are several good ones. 5-0 out of 5 stars Party Blues CD...
....if you have just one Clarence Carter CD in your collection, it's gotta be this. These are great, great tunes from his 80's and 90's Big C/Ichiban records days that are bluesy and funky and fun. From the street risque numbers "Strokin'", "Grandpa Can't Fly his Kite", "Love Me With A Feelin" (all of which has benefitted from a word of mouth hyping--you probably won't ever hear these on radio) to the Dr's jams "Dr. CC" and "I'm Not Just Good" to "Slip Away" (Redux)...in a phrase, they are near masterpieces. Mark my words, people are gonna catch on and catch up with these jams and make them their greatest medicine for whatever ails them. They are just that good. ... Read more

Editorial Review

These 17 tunes come from King's most fertile period, his 1966-68 tenure at Memphis's Stax Records. Stax chief Jim Stewart had been reluctant to sign blues artists because he felt straight blues wouldn't mesh with Stax's patented Memphis soul. Ironically, the fusion of King's sharp guitar wails with the dynamic rhythms of Booker T. & the MGs--the Stax house band--was what set King apart from other bluesmen. The unique blend produced classic after classic: Booker T. Jones' rolling piano propels "Laundromat Blues." Al Jackson's drum shuffle supports "Crosscut Saw." The driving horns of Andrew Love, Wayne Jackson, and Joe Arnold accent "Born Under a Bad Sign." King's ripe and mellow vocals are a perfect match for the soul-drenched music while his dramatic string bends leap out. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the best Albert King stuff
Agreed - this is some of the best songs I heard Albert play on record.Truly an excellent collection. You'll hear not only Albert's awesome soulful singing but also a LOT of intense blues guitar, which is truly "King".The sound quality leaves more to be desired, but it is acceptable.Material more than makes up for it.I played this record to someone who's never heard Albert King's material before and they were shocked.I'm a fan of Albert King, and this is a valuable disc in my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars King of the Blues Guitar
This is my absolute favorite recording by Albert King. I had the album for years and literally wore it out playing it. I finally got the CD to replace my album and was pleasantly surprised to find it included some additional material not on the LP. Any collection of blues material is not complete without this.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Mr. Super Hip" is makes the whole CD worth it
Suffice it to say that this is an excellent tool for beginning improvisers.More experienced players who have a fondness for the seventies rock/Fender Rhodes sound will LOVE Mr. Super Hip.It's just cheesy enough to be cool, and this sus chord thing at the end of the form was so juicy it just about made me bang my head into a wall.Highly recommended for all beginners and anyone like me with an open mind toward the retro thing....

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
This CD provides a good start for people at the beginning of the journey that is jazz. It is a tool that is able to be used at both beginners level with the option of putting more complex scales over the top at a laterstage. 5-0 out of 5 stars WELLDESERVED RECOGNITION
I am lucky enough to have been acquainted with Johnny A and his mesmerizing talent for decades...it is so satisfying to see him finally getting the recognition he deserves. Buy this CD and his first release Sometime Tuesday Morning and you will understand what all the hoopla is about.
4-0 out of 5 stars Musicality and monster chops
This is a most enjoyable set of instrumentals, and the only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because I heard the man live, playing a killer set, before I bought this CD. In an intimate club setting, Johnny A burns the house down, and plays with a raw intensity that this studio recording does not quite catch. It's an excellent record nonetheless, full of masterly yet understated guitar playing, and solid songwriting. The soloing is concise and every note counts. If you really want to spoil yourself, see the man live withhis trio...very awesome, and not just for guitar geeks.

You'll cruise by quaint country scenes, race a train skirting rolling hills and rustic mountains. You'll make it all the way to Nashville via gritty city streets past all the coolest jazz and rock clubs. That's where you'll go when you put "Get Inside", a slick offering from Johnny A, in your CD player.

5-0 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS WORK OF ART!
Wow...what a wonderful artist! In this day of x-rated lyrics that promote disrespect and violence, how refreshing it is to have an artist like Anthony Gomes who is obviously trying to spread the word of friendship, faith and love.It seems that his lyrics are like a window into his soul, and this is such goodness there!Very uplifting, I highly recommend. His guitar work is incredible...Stevie Ray comes to mind.I think folks are going to take notice of this deserving young man and there will be many more cd's to come!

YEA BROTHER, U GOT IT TOTALLY GOIN ON!
5-0 out of 5 stars Gimme another dose!
This is a terrific disc showcasing Gomes' growth as an artist. Those familiar with his work already know him for his powerful vocals and incendiary guitar, this new CD brings funk, rock, R&B and the blues together in a manner that few artists could pull together without sounding contrived or manufactured.

Editorial Review

In this beautifully chosen program of mostly a cappella arrangements, Robert Shaw and the Robert ShawChamber Singers deliver the Christmas story in tones of gentle andmoving splendor. The carols and sacred settings recorded here are allof an intimate sort, and the rapturous, gently expressive realizationsShaw and his singers give them prove unfailingly appealing.Particularly moving is the newest work on the disc, a setting of "O magnum mysterium" by the American composer Morten Lauridsen. Franz Biebl's"Ave Maria" is another gem, as is the arrangement by Healy Willan ofthe French carol "What Is This Lovely Fragrance?" The offering includesa pair of chorales from Bach's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a perfect Ceremony of Carols!
This is the finest recording of Britten's A Ceremony of Carols I've ever come across, and there are plenty of versions to choose from. The King's College Choir rendition suffers from overstuffed acoustics, a constant with that choir, and their recording of Ceremony of Carols falls short in the requisite rhythmic clarity and intensity. The Christ Church, Oxford version is plodding, and lacks sparkle. Harry Christopher's The Sixteen come close, with marvelous sonics and ecstatic diction, but fall apart in the exacting 'This Little Babe' round with uneven cohesion, and strange stressed notes that ruin the waterfall effect so felicitously construed by Britten. I've not heard Britten's own conducted version, but he scrupulously insisted on boy trebles, and it's difficult if not impossible to conjure a more perfect rendering than the one given here by Shaw and his Chamber Singers. 'This Little Babe' is incomparable in each and all of its rapid fire contours, which is no mean feat. Mezzo-soprano Nanette Soles deserves special mention for incandescent singing on 'That Younge Child". The luminous pacing of 'There is no rose of such virtue' is notable, and to his credit Shaw employs the ecclesiastical pronunciation of the various Latin passages, unlike The Sixteen (and most other English choir recordings of this piece) who insist on an idiomatic British pronunciation of Latin, which offers nothing but distraction. Some will prefer boy treble singers, an attractive option, but for high musical values and the art they inevitably enshrine, it's impossible to be disappointed with this profoundly wrought version of Ceremony of Carols. Bach's 'Break Forth, O beauteous heavenly light' is just right, and I'd not heard 'Heavenly Light' by Aleksandr Kopylov; both are favorable additions to an excellent recording. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant compilation
This is an absolutely outstanding collection of carols - some of them well-known, some of them obscure. As a choral singer, I've had the pleasure of singing many of these pieces, and I was delighted when I found them all in one place, and done by an ensemble so accomplished as the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers! It just isn't Christmas for me without this recording.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't care for it that much
I prefer to hear the voices and the words of the carols, and this one has too much other sound (maybe even the use of massed voices); I have a hard time hearing what they are singing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best blues compilation
IMO, this 5-disc set is par none the best blues compilation spanning over 50 years. Not everything noteworthy has been included, but it is the best bang for your buck you're going to find anywhere for a wide blues selection from early to recent, and Marty Scorese did a fantastic job in selection.I have given it as a gift several times and it is the gift that keeps on giving. Some very great tunes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raw
This box set compliments the film series very well. Musically, the set is wonderful until the middle half of the fourth disc and wans quite considerably on the fifth disc. This is not only a matter of bad taste in choosing appropriate music for these parts of the set, it is merely a matter of musical history: the blues at the time in which these portions of the set cover was simple not very good music.

Another day, another Lightnin' Hopkins collection. It's only to be expected for a musician whose career lasted six decades, and whose recorded output was so profuse (often for several labels simultaneously) that the neophyte is hard pressed to determine which of the many albums, compilations, and box sets to acquire. 5-0 out of 5 stars The blues do not get any bluer than this.........
The blues do not get any bluer than this. This was my first foray into Texas/folk blues, and it will most certainly not be my last, as the music on this CD are some of the most representative blues music I have ever heard. One of my favorite songs is a song sung by both Hopkins and Sonny Terry, Conversation Blues. If you do not like this song, the blues are simply not for you! But every song on here is exceptional, something I had not expected as I picked this up more out of curiosity than anything else. Now, it is one of my favorites to listen to, right up there with Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters. The album covers Hopkins career for a 20 year period, from 1941 to 1961, and is ideal for anyone who is starting out their Hopkins' collection(as I was).

I first heard of Guy Davis while watching Noggin with my daughter. Then I caught the tail-end of an interview he did promoting Skunkmello on NPR. From one of the most renonwned blues legends ever, this album of his greatest hits is awesome. If you love guitar, and blues then check this album out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Influential................
B.B. King is the most influential blues guitarist of all time. B.B. is the real deal for so many reasons, and this greatest hits complination is the very best. The first two tracks are taken from Live At Regal one of the best live B.B. King recordings including Every Day I Have The Blues, and Sweet Little Angel. Some other known tracks for the early listner are The Thrill Is Gone, and Hummingbird those are both two tracks that really stand out. Their is a track called Playin' With My Friends (with robert cray), and When Love Comes To Town(with U2). I highly encourage anybody to try this bb. king's greatest hits complination. I also would highly recomend Live At The Regal!

4-0 out of 5 stars Marcia goes live
I was hoping this live album would bring out all the energy Marcia brings to live performances and to a great extent it did. I find her studio albums burdened with ballads and just not the same as watching her pound the keyboard and sing. This is a generally consistent album of her best material, except for the puppy dog song but I may be in a small minority on that.GR

4-0 out of 5 stars A little piece of home
The first time I heard Marcia Ball was in downtown Dallas at the Farmers Market eating breakfast with my husband.A gentleman was playing music for those eating on the outside court. The music was so great that after we finished eating we went up to him to find out who that artist was and needless to say it was Marcia Ball...we enjoyed it them and still enjoy it. I love to listen to it after a hard day at work...it sooths my soul and brings a back a little piece of home life.

4-0 out of 5 stars She puts the live in live albums.
I hate live albums so why did I buy this one? Partly because I'm a huge Marcia Ball fan and partly because I own every other album she's put out.I saw her perform at a small venue in Vancouver this summer. Halfway through the show, a friend nudges me and says I feel guilty for only paying $22 to see this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delbert Rocks
This is a fine album worthy of purchase by anybody wanting to add to their Delbert collection.Has a number of songs that are really good but won't be found on any compilations.Get it and you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Listen to it over and over and never get bored.
The only luke warm review on this album says it wasn't enough straight up blues.Gee, Delbert showed some versitility. My how awful!
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough Straight-Up Blues
This CD is a good CD, but, depending on the cut, a little (or a lot) too R&B, reggae, cross-over pop, or rock sounding for my taste.I was looking for a good, solid blues album by McClinton. After a couple of listens, I don't consider this to be it, despite other customer reviews by blues afficionados who apparently do (and whose reviews influenced my decision to give it a whirl).Of the 11 tracks, I count 3, or maybe 4, tops, that have a true blues sound, and, even then, 2 of them are really "blues light."Of the 3 or 4, "Blues as Blues Can Get" is really enjoyable -- with Paul Shaffer playing Wurlitzer.Again, it's a good CD, and McClinton's lyrics are often clever and playful, but if you're looking for what I was looking for, I'd skip this one. ... Editorial Review

One of the greatest concert recordings of all time. How could it be less, with B.B. King performing some of his best material before a literally captive audience in an Illinois prison? "Worry, Worry" and "How Blue Can You Get" take on deeper meanings here, although King works the latter's camp lyrics as if he were in a juke joint. His mix of down-home humility and commanding stagecraft is instantly appealing. And his guitar barks, sings, and squeals with such authority that this is a bravura performance from the first bent, soul-searing note. A true desert-island disc. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arguably B.B. King's Best
Fans often call B.B. King the king of the blues guitar, but if B.B. were only a brilliant guitarist he wouldn't be a household name for decades. B.B. King is also a powerful singer, a terrific interpreter of others' material, an effective bandleader and - most importantly - a thoroughly professional entertainer. You can experience all B.B. King's sides on the "Cook County Jail" CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of BB King
This CD captures the very essence of what makes Blues Boy King the King of the Blues. The power of BB's music thunders througout the CD. This album has the best rendition of "The Thrill is Gone" I have ever heard, and I've heard just about all the versions he has done over the years. You can almost see him crooning to the microphone with his eyes closed, and Lucille gives this song so much more with her solo at the end. If anything buy this CD for the "The Thrill is Gone"; as soon as you get it turn it up, sit down and close your eyes...

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh
I don't get it.

4-0 out of 5 stars An acquired taste, but try it
This album is kind of like wasabi: it takes some getting used to but if you do, you have a friend for life. You're in for a big surprise if you're expecting traditional blues from this old bluesman. This is techno remix blues, which obviously won't please some, but he pulls it off. Best-known and probably the best tune is "It's Bad You Know", played on WXRT in Chicago, who turned me on to the album. Most of the cuts are musical loops, not all of which work, but overall pretty solid and recommended for anyone wanting something different. Die-hard blues purists need not apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shuck Dub?
Dear Mr. Yates: Are you one of those turtle-neck wearing folks with plenty of money and a nose in the air? Are you one of those that believe that the Blues must adhere to some unforgiving rules that you made up? Get off yo' high horse and put down that pipe! The Blues have always been a "blasphemy", a walk downtown, a soulful melody, a harsh reality.... etc... The Blues NEVER did adhere to any rules of musical education. The Blues is the Blues because of a feeling, an attitude. This album has all of that attitude, irreverent as it is. Take off that turtle-neck sweater and listen to these grooves. Blues grooves. The only other artist to take the Blues to this level this decade has been G. Love. No, it's not your daddy's Blues.... but it is Blues.... fun Blues.... New Orleans Blues... Blues the way it was supposed to be: Fun, Exciting, Soulful and NOT standard! Blues with a capital "B".

3-0 out of 5 stars Only in it for money?
I'm laughing my fricken a** off. I read the review by Mr. "Thomas W. Yates" who states below "shame on fat possum....they used to be about documenting a pure, dying art form. now fat possum is all about "updating" the blues to "increase the audience"...fat possum only cares about the $$."

Editorial Review

What's most astonishing about Woody Guthrie is the way he created a whole, complete, living world of song. People, places, great and small events, nature, poetry, visions: He was so much more than a working class spokesperson, though, as this collection shows, he was the greatest one America has known. This first volume in the historic reissues of Guthrie's Smithsonian recordings is one of the finest: Guthrie's voice and verbal brilliance were at their peak in the 1940s and songs like "Do-Re-Mi," "Jesse James," and "Jesus Christ" continue to influence songwriters a half-century later. --Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars One Great immortal song
Music is like art. What appeals to one might not another. In this case I wanted his recording of This Land is Your Land which was resurrected during the last presidential campaign by JibJab. If you haven't heard their rendition, it's a must. As far as the rest of Woodie's songs I thought they were OK but nothing great.
4-0 out of 5 stars A POPULIST SINGER FOR THE AGES
This review is being used to describe several of Woody Guthrie's recordings. Although I have listened to most of his songs and recordings these represent those that best represent his life's work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Woody Guthrie... Start here...
Woody Guthrie has become an indelible part of 20th century American history. Many probably romanticize his story well beyond the realities of his life, but Guthrie's influence remains strong and unyielding. Many also know of the mesmerizing effect Guthrie's music had on the young Bob Dylan (see Dylan's "Chronicles, Vol 1"). Others soon jumped on the wagon, and Guthrie ended up speaking to subsequent generations long after his death in 1967.
