Subtlety is both a blessing and curse for Robert Cray. In the studio, his increasingly restrained arrangements have served to frame his growing mastery of classic Memphis soul, allowing his soaring, vibrato-rich voice to carry tunes that directly echo the Stax years. That can work well live, too, and does so here in "Phone Booth" and the funky distillation "Back Door Slam," an ode to sexy down-home belters like Little Johnnie Taylor. But too often Cray downplays his incendiary guitar abilities on stage, which makes long numbers like "The One in the Middle" interminable, and leaves this two-disc live set--recorded during a week of shows opening for Eric Clapton at London's Royal Albert Hall in May 2006--full of cold spots. Things heat up whenever Cray picks up his Stratocaster in earnest, whether he's plucking out fat, singing notes à la Albert Collins in his radio hit "I Guess I Showed Her" or weaving a slow, soulful path through the bridge of the ballad "The Things You Do to Me," using his whammy bar and unpredictable variations on the melody to conjure shades of introspection. Overall, this set will please Cray's die-hard fans, but is unlikely to lure new listeners. Read more

A Classic...
This is a classic jam performance by two masters of the Blues.
Albert King In Session
I heard the song, "Don't Lie To Me" on a local blues station one night and was blown away.I don't typically write reviews, but this album is superb.I will boldly state that I think Albert King is better than B.B. King, and I am not alone in this belief.Stevie Ray Vaughn and Albert King create magic on this album.I enjoy Albert's playing so much that I typically skip past the SRV song (second song on the album) and continue on with Albert.Do NOT miss out on the enjoyment this album will give you.The sound quality is absolutely top notch, and the songs are great.Buy it and enjoy!

Mutual Admiration Society
It is clear that these 2 men liked each other and enjoyed trading solos. However,it is alsomuch more of an Albert King showcase, with standout performances of Ask Me No Questions, Don't Lie To Me , and Stormy Monday. What I like most about it is that it sounds so much better (i.e. dynamic and modern) than most of the old Albert King albums. This album really captures thehigh energy and power of a remarkable singer and guitarist(Albert King), and you canhear the musical roots of where Steve Ray's sound came from. It was misleading to list 11 cuts on the album , since 4 are simply fragments of conversation between the 2 guitar heroes. However the songs are lenghty, for example, Blues At Sunrise runs over 15 minutes,andthose conversations add to the overall feel of a live concert , even though it is a studio recording., Theonce in a lifetime combination of these 2 icons on the same album make this a real collector's item for blues fans ... Simply phenominal
I had the tremendous pleasure of hearing Sonny live and was immediately drawn into the experience. As HOT is it gets
As much as I truly love the slide mastery of Johnny Winter, Ry Cooder, Roy Rogers, Eric Sardinas, Luther Allison and Robert Johnson, Sonny is the man.As much as each of the above masters offer their own unique style and brilliance, each worthy of multiple listenings and close study, Sonny is the man. And though it is not a competition, I dare say Sonny is, hands down, the best I've ever heard.Grant Street is as HOT as it gets, period.His searing tones, rich dynamic textures, composition and vocals (all original) are a testimony to one of the most remarkable live albums ever made.

Blues For The Lost Days
Well, I've heard the music, watched the DVD, and read the reviews and after doing so am slightly amused by the somewhat overwrought enthusiasm for Buried Alive In The Blues. Sure, I like the music and enjoy the commentary, but this CD is more nostalgia and an affirmation of a musical style than a bold statement.
back to the sixties
The music on the cd is great, but the real value lies in the dvd, which takes you back to the development of the 60's "white" chicago blues scene with actual footage of icons like Muddy Waters and Mike Bloomfield (with The Electric Flag). All the musicians are interviewed at length, and there are great comments from B.B.King and Buddy Guy. The dvd is actually good enough to be shown as a documentary on public television, and it also includes "concert" footage of about half the songs featured on the cd.
Father, Sons and one Heck of a Daughter
The folks at Amazon always discourage referencing previous reviews for various reasons--but big one certainly is that those other reviews sometimes seem to just disappear.And then you've got egg on your face.Why does this happen? Usually, I understand, it's because the author of same has opted to delete his or her critique (maybe there was a change of heart or maybe just too much hate mail).Sometimes an irrelevant or morally reprehensible tract in the guise of a review might be successfully challenged by another customer, but I suspect that's rarer.

I Saw Mayall Live at the Fillmore
But it was the show at the Fillmore West, and "Room To Move" knocked everyone off their feet. Well, they were already sitting on the floor (no chairs, then!). They say that if you remember the 60's, you weren't really there, but I think this show was SO memorable, it made it through the filter of time. You didn't have to be there. You can just buy this, and .... imagine.

Heralded as one of the greatest live blues albums ever recorded, this set catches the singer-guitarist as his star was in ascent: in 1964 playing Chicago's answer to Harlem's Apollo Theater--the Regal. King's performance is visceral. He sings so hard that gravel flies even in his clearest high notes. And his trademark single-note guitar lines are sharp and steely, matching his voice with trembling vigor. He offers early hits like "How Blue Can You Get," "Worry, Worry," and "You Upset Me Baby" to what's essentially his adopted hometown crowd (by his own account, King had already played the theater hundreds of times). They give him a hero's welcome. In fact, the audience's screaming enthusiasm is distracting. But rarely has a love-fest of this magnitude between a performer and fans been documented. --Read more

Regally Overrated
I can't believe the touch of B.B. King. I enjoy his playing immensely. I know this album gets buried in accolades. But I don't like it. The quality is poor and, differing from other's opinions, the crowd noise takes away from the music. B.B. said, in so many words, that Live at the Regal was far from his choice as his best recording. Typically, he said he wouldn't argue with success--and left it at that. There are so many good albums by B.B. You can't go wrong for $4.65 for the "Ultimate Collection". Sure it doesn't have them all--but it has quite a few of his great songs, including a few from Live at the Regal. I would steer clear of this selection. Or I'll send you mine for free!

You Really Have To Hate Music To Not Like This
One of the first things people notice when listening to B.B. King's Live At The Regal album is that the response of the audience is rapturous, almost like the congregation at a Pentecostal church. There's a reason for this. This is simply the natural response of anyone hearing the King of the Blues at the peak of his powers.
A Blues Timemachine
Absolutely one of the finest live albums of all times.I bought this album because it was listed as one of the top 100 guitar albums of all time in Guitar Player Magazine.You get lightning in a bottle here with BB King at the height of his powers.The audience is alive and you can feel the young woman hyperventilating and swooning to BB King's rendition of some blues classics.His voice is flawless, still velvety smooth, especially when compared with later live albums by BB King.There is the perfect mixture of BB King's introductions or setups for each tune, guitar, vocals and audience reaction.The sound is immaculate, balanced and clear. His guitar playing is efficient and his timing is perfect.It makes you wonder why more recent "live albums" lack the spontaneity and quality found in this recording.The only regret is the album is not longer. ... Marcia goes live
I was hoping this live album would bring out all the energy Marcia brings to live performances and to a great extent it did. I find her studio albums burdened with ballads and just not the same as watching her pound the keyboard and sing.This is a generally consistent album of her best material, except for the puppy dog song but I may be in a small minority on that.GR

A little piece of home
The first time I heard Marcia Ball was in downtown Dallas at the Farmers Market eating breakfast with my husband.A gentleman was playing music for those eating on the outside court.The music was so great that after we finished eating we went up to him to find out who that artist was and needless to say it was Marcia Ball...we enjoyed it them and still enjoy it. I love to listen to it after a hard day at work...it sooths my soul and brings a back a little piece of home life.

She puts the live in live albums.
I hate live albums so why did I buy this one? Partly because I'm a huge Marcia Ball fan and partly because I own every other album she's put out.I saw her perform at a small venue in Vancouver this summer. Halfway through the show, a friend nudges me and says I feel guilty for only paying $22 to see this.

A very strong performance!
Finally after a long waiting the first live album of Joe Kubek and Bnois King. Having been their fan for long time I never had the chance to see them playing live as I live in Europe. If their gigs are all like this I must have missed out a lot! What a fantastic performance! Recorded at Ft. Worth, Texas on December the 31st 2005, this is a marvellous CD. Full of energy from start to finish, this live act of powerful Texas style blues shows once again how well the two different styles of Joe and Bnois blend together. I would like to say that from my point of view they are one of the few bands out there with a very personal sound, a sound that makes them immediately recognisable. Their interpretation of Texas blues is very original and very personal too. Joe's guitar playing is surely very close to the giants of the past such as Freddie King, Bnois's sound is very much jazz infected. In a set packed wall to wall with excellence, I particularly like the fantastic version of "Where I want to be" a nine minutes plus burning slow blues in which both of them have the chance to display their qualities as guitar players. If you like Texas Blues I believe you shouldn't miss this one. Very highly recommended.

True Rock Jazz Jam
As a fan of mountain folk music, blues is ususally not my first choice.It's often too predictable because so many aging musicians have played this genre ragged.Having said that, this album was impressive.Fans of this genre will love the dynamic guitar of English cap-wearing Smokin' Joe Kubek and black-leathered Bnois King, reinforced by background percussion from their bespectacled drummer.

Mississippi hill country patriarch R.L. Burnside's two previous albums dabbled in remixes and trip-hop experimentation geared to the college-rock market. This is a restorative: pure slide 'n' drone blues caught live in January 2001 at Portland, Oregon's Crystal Ballroom. The 73-year-old is joined by his usual jukehouse band, his drummer and grandson Cedric Burnside and guitarist Kenny Brown, who blow sparks behind Burnside's rich honey-and-molasses voice and chunky six-string affirmations. Blues meets punk
Too often blues albums are simply reheated renditions of Clapton, SRV, or Muddy Waters licks. However, thanks to many young acts, blues is being placed directly on the modern indie stage and finally being heard by new audiences. This group of mavericks just so happens to include a 78 year old John Lee Hooker fan from the hill country of Mississippi named R.L Burnside.

Rory's Finest Hour
I had never heard of Rory until a bandmate of mine turned me on to this album (thanks Ken Smith). We played it until it wore out and then bought another copy. The band ended up doing 5 songs of this particular LP and we went to see him play at the Colonial Tavern in Toronto, Canada. We went on a Monday night and were so impressed that we went back for the rest of the week. Each night, the buzz got bigger and the audience was at full capacity by Thursday night. He and the band were on fire and we were knocked out. I consider this album to be his best live work and is on par with other "better selling" live works (Humble Pie/Fillmore, Allmans/Fillmore, Muddy Waters/Newport and so on). I've been a fan of Rory's ever since that cold Monday in Toronto back in '75 and on a recent trip to Ireland, I stopped by his gravesite to pay homage and respect to a musician's musician. Live on Rory!

Proof positive of the incredible musical genius of Rory Gallagher
Of the many inanities on the Rolling Stone list of the 100 greatest guitarists that came out with great fanfare a few years ago, the most absurd is this:Rory Gallagher did not make the list.One can argue about where various guitarists should have been placed, but around 65 of the guitarists on the list truly belonged there.But 90 or 95 of the ones on the list must cringe with embarrassment that they were ranked above Rory Gallagher.There is simply no way that one can listen at any length to Rory play one scintillating solo after another and place him outside the top ten guitarists in the history of rock.Yeah, he was never terribly popular and even now is not especially well known to the public at large, but the fact is that he had utter mastery over his primary instrument.And unlike most guitarists, Gallagher was a multi instrumentalist.It is widely reported that when Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones, the first choice to replace him was Gallagher.It is easy to see why.He was even more of a blues purist than any of the remaining Stones, was a better slide player than Keith Richards, Brian Jones, or Mick Taylor, would have provided far better back up vocals than anyone ever has for the band, would have brought some of the same multi-instrumental mastery that Brian Jones contributed in the sixties, and just generally would have forced everyone else in the band to get better just to keep up.
Rory Gallagher:Live In Europe
For my money, Live In Europe is a lot better than Irish Tour '74.Irish Tour is all electric, played fast and loud, which gets monotonous; also, it consists almost entirely of Rory's own songs.Live In Europe varies the tempo a lot better, and it includes a lot of old blues standards mixed in with his originals. ... Who says it won't burn
An awesome Cd.The disc opens with the Al Green influenced memphis soul number Alone, whichalone is worth the price of the disc.Followed by the late Paul Pena's Gonna Move featuring some tasty slide by husband Derek Trucks.(Must be nice to call on the best slide player in the world for your CD) Other highlights include a wicked version of Don't Think Twice It's All Right and a blistering I Fell In Love.Also included are a tip of the hat to Atlanta music legend Bruce Hampton and a smoky Blues on a Holiday.

The Best!!
Ruthie Foster is THE BEST pure singer I have ever heard.When she sings Walk On and/or Oh Susannah - chills...
Powerful, Transcendently Beautiful!
A couple of weeks ago on a stiflingly sultry afternoon at the Texas Book Festival I heard in the distance this incredible voice singing the old Curtis Mayfield song, "People Get Ready."I moved quickly toward it and caught the last two minutes of Ruthie Foster's one hour set at the Entertainment Tent.In those two minutes, the gritty spirituality of her bluesy gospel rendition of that classicgave me the chills, and, I confess, watery eyes.She shook me. I told my wife that she was the greatest singer I had ever heard, and I'm not sure that I would qualify that even now. I ordered two of her CD's as soon as I could get to the internet and Amazon.com.The studio produced "Runaway Soul" is truly great, and I highly recommend it, but "Stages" is as close to perfection as any human has a right to expect.I agree with the other reviewer.It's the best live CD I own, with the possible exception of "James Brown at the Apollo!"Her rendition of "Oh, Susana," is revelatory.Foster discovers beneath the hokey joy of the tradition tune a transcendently beautiful lament.It is a shockingly insightful performance.Haunting.I could go on and on about other great numbers on the CD, but won't.Just buy it and enjoy it.

One of the greatest concert recordings of all time. How could it be less, with B.B. King performing some of his best material before a literally captive audience in an Illinois prison? "Worry, Worry" and "How Blue Can You Get" take on deeper meanings here, although King works the latter's camp lyrics as if he were in a juke joint. His mix of down-home humility and commanding stagecraft is instantly appealing. Arguably B.B. King's Best
Fans often call B.B. King the king of the blues guitar, but if B.B. were only a brilliant guitarist he wouldn't be a household name for decades. B.B. King is also a powerful singer, a terrific interpreter of others' material, an effective bandleader and - most importantly - a thoroughly professional entertainer. You can experience all B.B. King's sides on the "Cook County Jail" CD.
Best of BB King
This CD captures the very essence of what makes Blues Boy King the King of the Blues. The power of BB's music thunders througout the CD. This album has the best rendition of "The Thrill is Gone" I have ever heard, and I've heard just about all the versions he has done over the years. You can almost see him crooning to the microphone with his eyes closed, and Lucille gives this song so much more with her solo at the end. If anything buy this CD for the "The Thrill is Gone"; as soon as you get it turn it up, sit down and close your eyes...

Excellent....but not his best live recording
I was introduced to Delbert McClinton a number of years ago. Being a fan of Austin City Limits, I was watching his TV concert in 1989 and was blown away with his singing and his band's musicianship. A few years ago, I purchased his more recent live album and have given it a few listens, but it did not stick with me. So, when I saw this new live album, I wondered why it was issued. Well, it does add some new cuts from that time frame and Turn On Your Lovelight is just outstanding. So, if you would like to experience a great blues/rock singer in concert, consider this album. But if you don't have his live album recorded on Austin City Limits in 1989, buy that one first....it is an absolute 5 star adventure.

This is Delbert in his environment - live, In Texas! There is not a bad song here. "LOVE LIGHT" in particular really kicks butt. Delbert is in fine voice and the band is super tight. Even though this concert is over 20 years old, it ranks as his best live recording. ... Read more

A gem.
This is Muddy Waters rocking out!He is in fine voice, a force of nature, with a hard driving band.Forget the labels, this is joyous rock n' roll.

Fantastic look at a true legend
According to the liner notes from this one, Muddy had a tough time with Blues festivals. First he was too electric and loud. The next year he was too acoustic and quiet. From the sound of this one, he finally got it just right.
One of the all-time classic live blues albums
Muddy Waters' July, 1960 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival was recorded and issued as one of the first live blues albums, and one of the very best as well. A bit short at only nine songs (plus four studio recordings), but that's just about the only complaint you could possibly lodge against this classic recording.

Carnegie Hall!!Wow!!!Steve, you sure have come a long way.But, we all knew you would.Yes, that's right, all of your Oak Cliff buddies and Kimball High School friends...Yes, we knew you were headed for greatness way back there in the late 60's and early 70's. Good CD With Original Material
Everyone knows SRV was great so of course this CD will be excellent, but it's not the same old SRV.It shows SRV in a setting that is not captured in any other SRV recordings.

Basie at his best
It was a great time in the late history of big bands and Basie was enjoying his popularity.It also had to be a high working with Sinatra.This collection was recorded live and definately swings.
