5-0 out of 5 stars Fat Update of the Chicago Blues Sound
This is a great, great blues album.Nick and his band have a fat blues sounds that is heavily influenced by the Chicago Blues masters, but is has a very modern and fresh sound to it.Nick paid his dues playing for Jimmy Rogers and in the Lendary Blues band. This album see Nick come of age and into his own.Album was nominated for Blues Album of the year by the Blues Foundation and when you hear it you will understand why.It should have won IMHO!. I have not been this excited about a new blues artist since Stevie Ray and Texas Flood. This is a great blues album with excellent guitar playing and very good supporting band. Album is solid throughout and title track sounds best played loud.Check out Nick - Start here - You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars modern Chicago blues
If you like Chicago-style blues, you gotta get this CD.This one covers all the styles with modern, fresh, clever lyrics; a tight band with killer keyboards; killer harp; and killer guitar playing. And lots of music for the buck (there's 16 tracks!).This is the best CD yet from Nick Moss and the Flip Tops.Go get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny and more
I listen to a lot of blues, and have been playing blues guitar for 10 years. My main influences are Warren Haynes, Muddy Waters, T-bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl, Kenny "Blue" Ray, and Jimmy D. Lane among others. And now I can add Nick Moss to that list. In fact, he blows them all away if you ask me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make you wanna move
HIs guitar playing is incrediable, his other band memeber can carry their own!!! You don't know if you want to dance or sit and listen as not to misss a single note

5-0 out of 5 stars Blues bearing repeating
I know what you're thinking: a blues-meister from Coral Gables, fabled haunt of the idle rich?Singing about being on a chain gang ("Big Toe"), for crying out loud (literally)?Ultimately, such questions matter not. This one's the real deal, and the richness is in the music.First off, this is not a one-man band. The rhythm section is very capable, particularly the hard driving playing of Steve Gaskell on bass. And Albert does not overwhelm his bandmates. When I first heard him play, the guitar stood out more than the vocals, but this CD holds up to multiple listening.Albert's craft is evident on each of his many styles of playing, from the excellent straight ahead wails of "Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt" (backed by some impressive piano work by Jerry Mascaro and drumming by Bob Amsel) to the raucous clamoring of "Big Toe" (which has justifiably gotten a lot of air play) and especially the slick slide work on "Walking Blues".Speaking of which, it's gratifying to see someone resurrect the slide guitar, which for no good reason seemed headed toward obscurity (even Clapton only used it once, briefly, in the blues-drenched Cream reunion concert at Madison Square Garden, October 24, 2005).
5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting New Release to put Castiglia on top of the blues world.
I have known Albert Castiglia for over 10 years and have heard him play countless times. I have heard all of his CD's and feel that this one -"A Stone's Throw" - places Albert at the top of the heap.Often I've been asked to review blues CD's - but more often than not, I return them unable to even write a review. With the Albert Castiglia new release, I could easily write about each cut on the album. I was must touched by "Youth Wants to Know" and his "Hurricane Blues," - both are touched by his own reality and he makes them very real indeed in today's uncertain world. He sings from the heart with an expert accomplished style that is more and more becoming his own.In concert he plays the hurricane blues along with The House of the Rising Sun about New Orleans. This CD has several references to the tragedy that we have endured - and these were written before the 2005 hurricanes but Albert living in South Florida has already experienced the grief from these storms and it is as if he was being a predictor of what was to come, he is playing the blues to all of us who have to live through these times. He says that his guitar and his voice is what he has to move forward and I say that is more than the truth inside his head and his heart and it reaches out and touches all that listen. Bravo Albert - this is a real winner and I give it 5 Stars!!!!!!!!!I also want to recommend that anyone who can, get ahold of Albert's self-released 1st CD, "Burn," they will not be dissappointed - it is also a great CD that was released in 2002."A Stone's Throw," is on Blues Leaf Records and they had the foresight to take him on - they will not be dissappointed nor will anyone who buys this CD. ... Editorial Review

Some inspired music has arrived in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (mainly on New Orleans-themed benefit albums), but nothing as audaciously ambitious as this cross-generational collaboration between Crescent City mainstay Allen Toussaint and former British upstart turned adventurously eclectic veteran Elvis Costello. As a songwriter, producer, and arranger, Toussaint has been responsible for hits from artists ranging from Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, and Lee Dorsey to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle. Costello, long a huge fan of Toussaint's music, sings relatively familiar fare such as "On Your Way Down" and "Freedom for the Stallion" from Toussaint's extensive songbook along with obscurities mainly recorded by Dorsey. Toussaint supplies his distinctive piano and horn arrangements--as well as lead vocals on "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?"--with Costello's Imposters serving as the rhythm section. Yet the real revelation comes from the new material, including the title track (a searing Costello composition in the Toussaint soul-spiritual mode) and five new Costello/Toussaint compositions that spotlight Toussaint's signature sound without diminishing Costello's creative contributions. What could have been a curiosity is instead a hallmark in the catalog of each artist. 2-0 out of 5 stars Such a waste...
If you could find a way to remove Elvis Costello's voice track from the recording, this would be a very good disc.If you could replace him with a competent R&B or soul singer, it would be a fantastic one (especially if he slurred the lyrics). As it is, it's just unlistenable.EC never was much of a singer, but here he's way out of his depth -- off-key whitebread bombast is not what this kind of music calls for. His voice is fingernails on the blackboard bad, and it's relentless... there's not even a single instrumental track to relieve the pain.It kills me to toss any disc with Allen Toussaint on it, but this one's got to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Sharp Collaboration for Costello Who Gains Gravitas With the Soulfully Erudite Toussaint
Renaissance musician/troubadour Elvis Costello partners this time with legendary New Orleans R&B musician Allen Toussaint, and the results on this disc are quite fulfilling, often languorous and melancholy, all the more fitting given its context after the devastation of Katrina. Even without the relief aspect, the timing of this collaboration somehow feels right perhaps because Costello at this juncture of his career seems to be gaining more gravitas as a musical presence. Produced live and without overdubs by Joe Henry, the crisp-sounding recording effectively combines Costello's band, The Impostors, with Toussaint's guitarist Anthony "AB" Brown and the Crescent City Horns to produce frequently transcendent moments. Costello wrote the searing title tune, a biting sideswipe against the Bush administration's slow response in hurricane relief, and he performs it with his familiar angry-man vigor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Soulful masterpiece
This is damn good stuff. It's the kind of album that you listen to while sitting on the edge of your bed, smoking one cigarette too many or maybe staring out your window while the sun sets. After all these years, Elvis Costello is still knocking them out of the park and with Allen Toussaint as a partner in crime on this recording, the result is an album that's so good that it almost hurts. The piano work is exquisite on this album as is Costello's singing.

Atlantic Records has ridden musical trends since the late '40s; these seven CDs chronicle the first 28 years of the label's work in black pop, during which artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding oversaw the creation and flowering of soul music. Also included are classic tracks by the Drifters, Wilson Pickett, Ruth Brown, the Coasters, Sam & Dave, and many others who walk through the dreams of R&B and rock & roll fans. Read more

So it says on a 1950s-era paper sleeve for an Atlantic Records single. When you think about it from what you heard, what you saw, and what is in the stats, it's not just a simple promotional phrase. Rhythm and blues was increasingly making its mark on music at the close of the `40s and into the '50s. This kind of music was being marketed by small independent labels that

Like the titular automobile, guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Sue Foley is dependable, road-tested, and economical. Through sheer tenacity, the Canadian has become an experienced and respected veteran in the limited but fertile genre of female blues-guitar-slinging bandleaders. On her tenth album, Foley finds a cruising lane between her tougher early work and a slicker, more R&B-influenced sound. She sticks to her blues background while shifting gears to a moderately more commercially oriented soulful approach that should appeal to old fans and create some new ones. With an instantly recognizable voice that can be sweet one moment and biting the next, Foley shows that being fashionable and rootsy aren't mutually exclusive. She's as comfortable with a Stonesy "Beast of Burden"-styled ballad such as "Do It Again" as digging her wheels into the album's high-drama, torchy showpiece "Absolution." While not all of the material--eleven of these tracks are written or co-penned by Foley--is up to those standards, her malleable voice, tough yet tender spirit, and subtle but sure guitar find the guts in even the less stellar tunes. The evocative front cover shows a glamorous Foley staring down the listener with an expression of steely resolve. It's a similar mixture of grace and danger that fuels this album, where she hugs the curves of the blues while careening around the corners of rock and soul. Read more

John Lennon once claimed that "the blues is a chair…the first chair," explaining the music's primacy in the grand scheme of things. That notion is richly underscored on this follow-up to late-blossoming North Mississippi bluesman R.L. Burnside's initial 1998 remix collection. While Kid Rock's rollicking duet Read more

I can only hope to see R.L. live in concert one day. This is one of the best Blues albums (or any type for that matter) to grace a CD. Inventive, unusual, hip, funky and smooth all rolled into one. Two words: "Buy It!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Collection
Nobody's a bigger Hendrix fan than I am, and I still think this is an excellent collection of updated arrangements. Purple Haze by the Cure and Bold as Love by the Pretenders are superb. In fact, the numbers that are closest to sounding like the original--Stone Free and Manic Depression--are the least interesting. The musicians did a great job on this recording, and I'd recommend it to anybody.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad, some generic
I agree with a lot of what has been written about this album. At 43 cents you are getting a bargain. Clapton does sound mailed in; Nigel Kennedy, well lets not get too personal; Buddy Guys, great guitar work but I have never been a fan of his vocals (that is just a personal feeling, if you like his vocals then you will like this song). With that being said, there are some versions which I love and for that go out and buy the album. Chrissie Hynde's version of Axis is fabulous, MACC adds soul to an already great song, Belly has taken a throwaway and has created something special. Overall it is 3 out of 5. The highs are great but the lows (EC you know you could have done better) are generic, which is probably the worst thing you can ever say about a classic artist - especially one that you revere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its a Hendrix Tribute, not a Hendrix record.
There are more Hendrix fans buying this almost expecting Jimi to be channelling his spirit from the other side through these musicians. This is not a seance, its a tribute album. If you're looking to hear Hendrix play, put in an Experience disc, or Band of Gypsies, or one of the hundreds of bootlegs that have been released by now..

Editorial Review

Singer-trumpeter-guitarist Olu Dara has been knocking around New York City's jazz circles for almost 20 years. On "In the World" he embraces Caribbean rhythms, African highlife/socca riffs, and gut-bucket blues. Vaguely reminiscent of Taj Mahal's fanciful integration of world music and the blues, Dara consistently straddles urban and rural artistry. Sophisticated yet irresistibly down-home, this collection is festive, tuneful, and engaging. Songs like "Rain Shower" and "Natchez Shopping Blues" are clearly based in the American folk-blues idiom, while "Okra" and "Your Lips" are closer to an Afro-Cuban aesthetic. Dara's warm voice is limited but expressive, and his guitar playing fundamentally percussive. On the other hand, Dara's trumpet is unique and extremely lucid. This album comprises a fascinating tour of several musical cultures. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Groove music for Grownups
This is a rich mature effort from an artist who understands the connections between the various genres of music (blues, jazz, soul, etc.) that evolved from the African-American south. Listen closely and hear a horn player's phrasing in the vocals. The songs brim over with his sense of humanity, knowing and not without a sense of humor while his band is a groove monster. Highly reccomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid
This album starts off on a soulful and catchy note, which continues throughout the album. The last track, KIANE, is beautiful. Dara's collaboration with his son Nas is awesome. My favourite would have to be YOUR LIPS. Buying this album will not be a regretable action- Dara blows all those other fish out of the water.

4-0 out of 5 stars In The World is a high quality album you won't regret owning
This truly is a great album.I'm already a fan of artists like Muddy Waters & have a decent amount of Jazz albums from Coltrane and Miles. But, I'll have to honestly admit I picked up this album after hearing him play the horn on Nas's "Life's A B****", "Dance" & others. This album is a LOT better than I expected it to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars really good. good as any live album.
this is a really good live album. some of the songs he sings are first timers for him like Superstition or I'm Leaving You (Commit a Crime). but all and all, a really great album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not His Best
Stevie's contract mandated that he produce another album. He was so strung out on drugs at the time that he was unable to produce new material.A live album was all he was able to come up with. The available material (mostly the Montreaux performances) evidently didn't meet the highest standards of quality so a lot of overdubbing was done.Stevie's drug induced monologue at the end of Life Without You was an embarrassment to many of his friends and colleagues.
4-0 out of 5 stars ****1/2. Much underrated
The late Stevie Ray Vaughan rocked on stage. His rendition of Howlin' Wolf's "Commit A Crime" may lack the raw punch of Wolf's original, but that's a minor complaint...most of this album is simply excellent, filled with gems from Vaughan's first three albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars An overlooked masterpiece
Of all Robert Cray albums, over a career that has now spanned 20 years, this is the one I keep coming back to time and time again. I Was Warned is not one of Robert Cray's more critically acclaimed or commercially successful albums, yet for me it's a handsome, undemanding record that is full of great songs and superb playing. As a practitioner of the blues, Cray has been instrumental in it's re-emergence as a popular art-form in the 80's and 90's, however he has never considered himself to be a 'bluesman' - preferring to call his sound a blues/soul/rock hybrid. I Was Warned tends towards soul and rock. There is a definite feel-good factor to 'Just A Loser' and 'I'm A Good Man', both carry an irresistable groove and Cray clearly revels in his everyman tales of love and life. 'The Price I Pay' is a meditation on fading love, it is one of Cray's finest ballads - a side of his music that seems to get overlooked. 'On The Road Down' is blisteringly good also and showcases some fine guitar-work. Blues purists may find I Was Warned a little too slick, but I love the mood that these taut, polished and wholly enjoyable songs put me in.

4-0 out of 5 stars Never gets old
I have to say that this CD is a very cool Cd that any true fan of music should have in their collection. "Strong Persuader" was the first Cd of Robert Crays that I owned and from there I have built up my collection. My favorite song on this disc is the title track, to me it is down and dirty blues music at its best. "The Price I Pay" is another slow blues tune that is also worth a good listen to. Other stand out on this disc are 'Just A Loser", "Won The Battle",and "He Don't Live Here Anymore" If you own any other Robert Cray CD, add this to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soulful
This is Robert Cray's most soulful and heartfelt CD among the eight that I own, the one that I reach for over and over again whenever I cravequintessential Cray. The first Robert Cray song I ever heard was "IWas Warned", and it sent me running to the nearest music store. "He Don't Live Here Anymore" is so raw that I sometimes have toskip over it. Just technically, emotionally, viscerally a wonderfulcollection. ... Read more

Probably more interesting for who he is, rather than the music itself. There isn't a song on this recording that isn't done better elsewhere - but Willie wrote 'em and adds his own style and emphasis to each one.The backing is by un-named session players who deliver stock riffs, for the most part.I agree with another reviewer that the harp playing is really good, though I disagree on the piano playing, which comes off as tinkly and pedestrian.Willie is best on "Back Door Man", on which he really rips and which fits his voice to a "T".It's worth the price for that tune alone. The best-balanced song might be "Seventh Son", with a really nice shuffle/swing to it.I was particularly disappointed in "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Little Red Rooster", but given recordings of the original artists (the tunes given to them BY Willie), the bar was pretty high.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Blues Masterpiece
You don't have to look very far to have proof this is a good album. In fact, just look at the tracklist of just about any rock album from the '60's and '70's. Chances are, you'll see a Willie Dixon song off this album. Out of the nine tracks, a good seven have been covered by famous rock bands, be they Jeff Beck (You Shook Me, I Ain't Superstitious), Led Zeppelin (You Shook Me, I Can't Quit You Baby), Cream (Spoonfull), the Doors (Backdoor Man), the Allmans (Hoochie Coochie Man) or the Stones (Little Red Rooster).
5-0 out of 5 stars He Is The Blues...
Willie Dixon is one of the few that could name an album "I Am The Blues" and not have it be a brash overstatement. Where would the blues be without the songs on this collection, every one of which he wrote himself. The proof is the number of artists that have covered his songs over the years: The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Magic Sam, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Sam Cooke, just to name a few. Willie Dixon was an integral part of the Chess records label and the Chicago blues scene, but also could deliver as a performer. Unlike the Amazon reviewer, I found this collection to be worth getting. While Dixon may not be the greatest blues singer ever in terms of technique, he delivers with heart and feeling, which is what the blues is all about. The backing musicians are talented too; my only complaint is that the personnel and the recording dates are not listed in the liner notes. Aside from that though, this disc is a chance to hear a blues legend play some of his best known material, and if you are a fan of the blues (as I am), you will enjoy this one. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Bill "Watermelon Slim" Homans sings like a baying basset, drawing the tongue-in-cheek misery of tunes like "Hard Times" and "Check Writing Woman"out in long, dry-mouthed syllables. But it's the slide guitar on this, his third album, that really howls, whether he's playing smooth and shimmery on his original take on the Robert Johnson myth "Devil's Cadillac" or drawing on the ghost of Elmore James on "Hard Labor." That blend of humor--always delivered from a skewed autobiographical perspective--and raw-boned backwoods virtuosity makes this one of the year's more colorful blues albums and should elevate Slim from the genre's underground. And while his backing trio, the Workers, are a crack outfit whose spare accompaniment beautifully frames Slim's laconic musings, the solo "Folding Money Blues"--just Slim moaning along with his acoustic guitar--is a high point, with Slim telling his complaints to all the "dead presidents." He deserves our ears, too. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh-sounding take on the blues
Bill "Watermelon Slim" Homans sings about misery and treachery, but instead of just going to the well and reroasting the same blues chestnuts he gives the genre a good, swift kick in the rear. "Watermelon Slim and the Workers" is the kind of CD that one should play to a group of friends assembled for a game or cards or dice on the porch. Nobody will know what is playing, but everybody will like this fresh-sounding take on the blues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I never heard about Watermelon Slim & the Workers and I bought this CD just for curiosity and for the positive reviews posted below. Thanks guys! One of the best purchase so far in 2006. From start to finish this is an excellent blues album played with feeling and a great respect for the masters of the past. You could define this album as a traditional blues one with a modern twist. To me sometimes it sounds like the great Muddy Waters was back again playing his music. Very solid and tight band, excellent slide guitar playing however it is Mr. Slim singing that deserves a particular mention. His voice is just perfect for the gender and his performance is constantly strong. Really recommended to all the blues lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars ... and don't forget to Boogie.
This would be a really solid, dependable, workin' man's blues album, except for 3 cuts: #1 Hard Times, #12 Juke Joint Woman, and #14 Eau De Boue. These 3 cuts elevate this collection towards legendary.

Editorial Review

R.L. Burnside's background is pure Mississippi Delta--he was raised in the hill country and musically trained by quintessential bluesmen like Fred McDowell. But this record, like all his work, is infused with an adventurous spirit, haunted by eerie bits of electronic music and dark, despondent subject matter. The combination sounds irresistibly fresh, and scary as a hellhound on your trail. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the Stones Listen to Burnside
When "Big Daddy" died last year, Mississippi and the nation lost another national treasure.Listening to this CD I'm amazed by the dedication to moving the blues foreward Burnside had, even in his final days.By contrast, I'm equally amazed by the lack of a sense of a new direction by the big name groups who are putting out watered down versions of the same things they havebeen doing for years. If you want a treat look into the Burnside Exploration, two of "Big Daddy's" grandsons, their blues power duo of guitar anddrum was "doing it" before anyone ever heard of the White Stripes.I hope they can chart a path to the future as bright as their grandfather's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why didn't I find him sooner?
RL Burnside is awesome! When I heard one of his songs on Accuradio.com, a streaming internet radio site and I was hooked. I thought, "I gotta get my hands on that CD!" When I arived home, I couldn't wait to play it. I cranked the volume up loud and had a lil' jam fest! I loved the way he incorporated hip-hop beats with his soulful blues sound! I will definitely be buying more of his albums in the future!

5-0 out of 5 stars I like it!
I love some of the sound effects that were added to this recording though Fat Possum added 3 bonus tracks done without remixing to try and satisfy everyone no doubt."Chain of Fools" especially is a must-hear with the rapper effects. On my copy, however, "Black Mattie" (the first bonus track), starts over a minute into the track.Do I have a defective copy or is it supposed to be this way? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars US country covers of Beatles songs that works brilliantly
The concept of different music styles being applied to another e.g. Dylan songs having had both spiritual choirs and reggae tribute CDs, is one of those gambles that when it works can be brilliant. This is one of those succesful cases taking the great Beatles songbook and having a range of different country and western (not all of them well known to me) apply a range of interpretations.
5-0 out of 5 stars NOT A NEW IDEA
Literally 100s of country artistes have made Beatles songs and one of the best was Emmylou Harris' "Here there & everywhere" from the 70s.5-0 out of 5 stars This album worked it out
Before I begin, I should say that I am not a big fan of the Beatles, never was, never will be.I respect them for their influence, but I prefer to listen to those that influenced them and those whom they influenced.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars They've butchered his songs
Garbage, don't buy. They've chopped up songs and spliced pieces together. For example Fooled Around is about 1/2 the length of the original, they cut the openning riff in half, removed an ENTIRE stanza (if you can believe it).I was very dissapointed.Keep shopping, but don't waste your money like I did.
1-0 out of 5 stars I GOT RIPPED!!!
The Elvin Bishop CD I received was not even Elvin Bishop. This CD case was right and even the CD looked right, but when played, it was something I had never heard!I am VERY unhappy about this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mott's American Axe
If you had to make up a list of the top 5 most technically brilliant and influential guitarist in the world of rock music, it would be a very hard job and one that would be open to a mountain of debate . But if pushed in no particular order I would come up with Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, and Roy Buchanan. If you were just going for influence then a few more names would have to come into the frame ,Robert Johnson,Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, even the likes of Toni Iommi and all would come in. For just plain technique some of the new guys would have a say Satriani, Vai or Stevie Ray Vaughn would have a shout, and more than a handful of votes. But to combine the two I would have to stick to my original five. Now three of those might be up to negotiation, but not Jimi or Roy.
