Carnegie Hall!!Wow!!!Steve, you sure have come a long way. But, we all knew you would.Yes, that's right, all of your Oak Cliff buddies and Kimball High School friends...Yes, we knew you were headed for greatness way back there in the late 60's and early 70's. But, you were with us in first period Gym class playing flag football on those cold mornings. And we came by to pick you up to go to school and you would come draggingout of the house with a toothbrush in your mouth and your shoes and socks in you hands. You were up 'til 3am playing music around Dallas nightclubs.going to school was tough. But you were with us and we will always remember and love you for it..

Everyone knows SRV was great so of course this CD will be excellent, but it's not the same old SRV.It shows SRV in a setting that is not captured in any other SRV recordings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contains One of the Best Blues Guitar Tracks Ever Recorded
Prior to hearing 'Second Winter,' my favorite blues tune had been when then-unknown Johnny Winter joined Michael Bloomfield on stage at the Filmore East and played an unbelievable 11 minute version of BB's 'It's My Own Fault.' I highly recommend getting your hands on that, but the slower 12 minute version included here is equally as good.It really showcases Johnny's amazing ability to combine lightning-fast speed with deep, emotion-jarring blues. Johnny is sort of in the same genre as Rory Gallagher in that although they have some fantastic blues tracks, their music is generally mostly blues-based rock, and not pure blues like B.B. or Muddy. Rory & Johnny (and Michael) never really achieved the notariety that they richly deserved except amongst those who love blues-guitar. In either case, there is no denying that Johnny was one of the best during his prime era.Another great blues track on this CD set is the live version of the classic 'Mama Talk to Your Daughter.' If you're looking for more slow blues masterpieces by Johnny, I highly recommend 'Be Careful with a Fool' on his self-titled CD, 'Life is Hard' on the 'Let Me In' CD, and 'You Keep Saying that You're Leaving' on 'Hey, Where's Your Brother' Cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like blues guitar....
"It's my own fault" on the live disc may be the best 12 minutes of electric blues guitar I've ever heard. It seems blues guitarists are everywhere these days, but at his peak - which just happens to have been around the time he was playing the Royal Albert Hall in April 1971 - Johnny was in a league of his own. No player today I'm aware of comes even close. The 2nd Winter CD is great also, as is the rest of the live disc. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winter Was Never This Hot
Johnny Winter deserves his place in the pantheon occupied by Hendrix, Clapton, McLaughlin, Reinhardt and now I'm running out. This is Texas electric blues at its best.

4-0 out of 5 stars This collection could have been better
After listening to this 4 cd set several times I've come to the conclusion that it could have been better condensed into 2 spectacular jazz cd's. First of all, cd 1 starts off with what soundslike banjo. Who's bright idea what it to include it on 100 years of jazz guitar? There are also songs that are dominated by saxophone and/or vocals with guitar as a background instrument.
5-0 out of 5 stars Historical Integrity!
Everyone will find something of their own here, be it pre-Charlie Christian or late period Miles. My own contribution (as a reviewer) is to commend the compilers for a keen sense of history. Instead of simply falling into the listmania cliche of "the 100 best X" they have chosen players according to a wide variety of criteria. Two that JUMP out here are: (1) how INFLUENTIAL a guitarist has been regardless of record sales or fame; (2) how HISTORICALLY or MUSICALLY significant a given recording has been. In the first category I note the recognition of Lenny Breau and Sonny Sharrock who are far from household naems. In the second category I note theinclusion of tracks that point to landmarks in the evolution of music and jazz guitar : Birds of Fire, June 15 from Duster (Burton/Coryell), Bright Size Life. This box set will delight you if you are a well-seasoned jazz enthusiast or coming to the genre for the first time. A fantastic value!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential guitar history
A monumental work, this four-CD box set celebrates the evolution of jazz from the perspective of our favorite instrument. Featuring representative cuts from 75 pivotal players, 100 Years of Jazz Guitar offers selections from the dawn of recorded music (originally captured on Edison cylinders) extending to the present day. The adventure begins with a harp-guitarist strumming in 1906 and stretches to Bill Frisell's "Ron Carter," released in 2001. Relatively unsung giants, such as Lonnie Johnson, Roy Smeck, and Eddie Condon rub shoulders with the likes of Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery, and Pat Metheny. The scope is enormous-shifting from Sol Hoopii's bouncy lap slide to Marc Ribot's skronky sonics is a mind-bender-but that's what makes this collection so valuable. We hear the entire spectrum of jazz guitar, from swing to bebop to funk to avant-garde. There's plenty to read, as well: John Scofield penned the collection's intro (he also appears musically), there's a bio for every player, and 25 of the included guitarists reveal who they find inspiring and why. "Essential" is an overused word, but in this case, it's wonderfully appropriate. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash on August 27, 1990, just as the first single from this CD, the beautiful Motown/soul-inspired workout "Tick Tock," was about to climb the charts and make the blues-rock hero an international superstar. Thankfully, he was able to make this delightful and laid-back album with his brother. For Jimmie and Stevie Ray, it was a kind of spiritual reunion. Jimmie had followed Stevie down the path to sobriety. These New York City sessions were a spirited celebration intended to mark the beginning of their musical partnership. While some tunes sound like the result of mere jamming, "Telephone Song" is one of Stevie's best numbers: an elegant blues shout with screaming guitar breaks. And Jimmie's B-3 organ-like textures on steel guitar astound. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FAMILY STYLE - VAUGHAN BROTHERS
This is one of the last of Stevie Ray Vaughan's' albums. It is very fitting that he made it a family affair. This album is exceptional and would be a great addition to anyone's collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brothers At Their Best
Family Style is perhaps Stevie Ray Vaughan's last record before his tragic death in 1990. I love Family Style for so many reason's mainly due to Stevie Ray Vaughan who was expanding his guitar vocabulary further than he had the previous year. Jimmie Vaughan was also at the peek of his career both of the brothers were a good mix between texas blues. I think for the most part the musicians were all different it added a new flavor to Stevie Ray's style. My very favorite song is Long Way From Home, and Brothers. Family Style would reach 7 on the charts becoming Stevie Ray Vaughan's most succesful album. I personally think this is a must have album for any die hard fans of the guitar. Buy this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Family Style
From the opening line from Stevie, "Roll, and I'll just feel something," the album is about feeling. Stevie's playing was effortless, and some even called him God's Radio, but his playing was always better when his big brother, Jimmie, was with him. Even though they weren't always in the studio together, laying down individual tracks to be mixed later, the magic is still there, and it shines when the brothers are playing together. Stevie reached the apex of his career with this album and "In Step" turning out the best music of his life, but lurking in the shadow, brother Jimmie came to his own here too. Jimmie voice makes its first appearance on an album as he sings. At times it is nearly impossible to tell which of the brothers is playing, but they each have a distinctive sound, which fit together perfectly as brothers should.Read more

Call it three for the price of one. Far from engaging in a guitar-playing shootout, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, and Johnny Copeland work together incredibly well, achieving a kind of musical synergy that's rarely heard. Copeland and Cray handle most of the vocal duties, and Cray's smooth, soul-tinged voice (positively shiver-eliciting on "The Dream," as is Collins's lead guitar work) complements Copeland's growl perfectly. Collins doesn't get to sing as much, but he more than makes up for it with his harmonica on the slow blues "Bring Your Fine Self Home." And of course, all three turn in stellar guitar work, trading solos and rhythm parts with the greatest of ease; Cray was a relative newcomer at the time of this recording, but he more than holds his own. One would be hard pressed to find a better blues collaboration anywhere. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have in Any Blues Collection - Simply Stellar
I just came across this disc recently, while I was doing searches on Johnny Copeland's records. When this record came up, I was surprised to see Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, and Robert Cray play together, but now I know that both Copeland and Cray were Albert Collins' proteges when they were starting out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Synergy
I first bought this on vinyl in the mid-80s. I listened to a lot of blues back then because, well, pop music really sucked.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Collaboration
I've been listening to this effort for over a decade and it still sounds good. It's hard to imagine that these guys hadn't worked together for years. Many collaborative efforts come off as contrived. This comes off smooth and natural. The combination of Collins' guitar and Cray's voice on "The Dream" is spine-tingling. "Black Cat Bone" is another favorite. ... Read more

Editorial Review

A decade after his tragic, untimely demise, electric-blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan has left behind a void that remains largely unfilled, despite a number of ballyhooed young pretenders. The guitarist's career was long troubled by personal demons, and this album chronicles those deceptively languorous, slow blues jams where Vaughan did battle with them. The howling, fervent tone he coaxed from his instrument was a product of lessons learned only in the School of Hard Knocks, accompanied by a voice--perhaps the most underrated of Vaughan's talents--that perfectly underscored his tortured gospel. But those who stereotyped Vaughan as a paint-by-numbers bluesman misunderstood the breadth of his lexicon; listen to "Chitlins con Carne" (from the guitarist's posthumous Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing journey through the blues universe!
The brief existence of Steve Ray Vaughan meant a great loss not only for the guitar world but the blues. Vaughan owned a personal trademark for this genre, even he was a famed rock singer. His special dark vocal inflections, and his peculiar style added the blues a propulsive fresh breath.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but it's great anyway
Well, I felt a little bit bad about not actually reviewing the album...you can find my original "review" below, where I make myself interesting by pointing out that this is not new material but rather a collection of previously released songs (with the exception of "The Sky Is Crying", an outtake from the "Couldn't Stand The Weather" sessions, but that one also appereared on the similarly titled album of outtakes issued after Vaughan's tragic death, although that was a different take).3-0 out of 5 stars sloooow and easy

because this is as good as it gets for blues singing, guitar playing and songwriting not necessarily in any order --- Otis Rush is as great a blues artist as any other in the history of the genre

5-0 out of 5 stars Blues at its best
Excellent compilation and a great collection of songs recorded under the limited enviroment that Eli Toscanos Cobra Studio had, but all these songs stand by themselves. Every time I hear Otis or Freddie King I can hear Eric Clapton, its clear he got influenced by this great musician. I cant quit you baby, a song written by Willie Dixon (who plays almost all the bass parts) later covered by Led Zeppelin and All your love later covered by the same Eric Clapton with John Mayall and also Aerosmith payed tribute this song later on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow..!! Finally Found One Of The Best Lps I Ever Had..!!
Many years ago, i had this on LP on Capricorn Records, and over the years it disappeared. I have been looking for this recording in hopes that this GREAT performance would Finally come to cd format, and it has..!!! Without a doubt, one of the finest live shows ive heard...Not only is this Just about Elvin Bishop, but his stellar first class band as well..Mickey Thomas (from the Jefferson Airplane) vocals simply soar with Elvin's guitar work. The rest of the band, are ALL top notch studio players. Buy this, and you will NOT be disappointed...Elvin was just nominated again for the 2006 Blues Music Awards (formerly known as the W.C. Handy ) for best album...Funny that we still call cds albums, and lps...but that was the category in which he was listed. Get Elvin Bishop's "Raisin Hell..Live" You'll be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Southern Rock at its best!
This album is the best of all Elvin's stuff, and the live versions are so much better than the studio recordings that you really can't compare them. This is especially true for "Fooled around, fell in love". If you're a Bishop fan, this is a must!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delbert is the best
I'm never disappointed by Delbert. I chose this purchase because I heard him recently singing the song, When Rita Leaves, and when I did the research - this was the album with the song. It's not often you hear a rhumba - and this one is great! I highly recommend this CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delbert's the BEST of Texas music
Delbert has aged to PERFECTION.For the essential Delbert, you must get both Nothing Personal and Room to Breathe.Delbert's rocking is infectious, his wit is wry, his blues are pure Texas... he's simply THE BEST of Texas.Want some great humor and clever rhyming?Try Living it Down. When you listen to When Rita Leaves, you KNOW that man really did something awful to get a woman so mad that she... (you'd better listen to the lyrics). The joy of sex with a twist of humor?Try All Night Long.More sex?find it at the steamy Baggage Claim. The song I first heard by Delbert that got me wanting to hear more was Squeeze Me In...what a fun rocker.I'm proud to be from Delbert country!

5-0 out of 5 stars His best
I thought "One of the Fortunate Few"would be Delbert's best ever, forever.I was wrong. This is great stuff here.Took me a few listens to really get into it, but it is GREAT."Read Me My Rights" is just the greatest. "When Rita Leaves," "Desperation," 'Don't Leave Home Without It," are all top, top notch. This CD has variety and quality from start to finish. This isn't just GREAT DELBERT, this is GREAT ANYBODY!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars cream of the crop
I am actually listening to this CD right now.It is awesome. This is the modern-age John Lee Hooker at his best.If you are looking for pure John Lee, though, this isn't your CD.In this CD, pretty much every song, with the exception of a couple, is a collaboration with someone, whether it's Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, Los Lobos, George Thorogood, or Charlie Musselwhite. This CD is very smooth, romantic, laid-back, classy, and has very good sound quality.I think this is a fine addition to your collection if you like either blues or rock or both. And as is true with most Hooker recordings, this is one is very energetic.Hooker's blues never really sound sad.Somehow he manages to perform even the saddest lyrics in the way that it would sound energetic rather than depressing, possibly because of his constant sense of rhythm (on other CDs, you can hear him stomp his foot in many, maybe most, songs he performs, especially in earlier work). The Healer marked re-birth of John Lee's activity in modern blues. He is a class act and aged like fine wine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heal me....
When I hear the first few bar's of the song, I get Chills up my spine, The True soul that Mr. Hooker has, and the Supernatural sound that Carlos provides, there's nothing that those two together can't heal.
3-0 out of 5 stars **3/4. Superflous
Don't get me wrong, I like John Lee Hooker a lot. It's just that this album adds little of interest to his legacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars ignore the "paid" reviewer, this cd is great!
I have intimate details in how this cd was made and let me tell you, when you listen to these tunes most of what you hear are "first takes"...the recording budget was extremely tiny and forced most of what you hear into the shining examples of how great musicians can overcome b.s. corporate hacks only concerned with the "bottomline". If you listen close you can even here Robben hit a couple of clams in his solos. It's beyond stupid for someone to say that the jackets members don't know how to play 12 bar blues, as well. The Yellowjackets can turn any blues form inside out and Russell Ferrante is one of the most proficient and versatile keyboard players in the world, period. When the recording budget is less than most people earn in a month, you end up with a hurried recording that focuses much more on the solos and less on production. But, as real musicians, what do we want to hear anyway? The solos! Good song writing, as well, but in the end I wait for the solos or cool musical cues. Despite the budget impediments, Robben is burning as is the whole band. This album and Mystic Mile are my two personal favorites and to me show off Robben's jazz-tinged, edgy blues playing to their fullest expression. If you've never heard Robben play blues it's nothing like SRV...it's much closer to Chicago in his rythm playing. His solo voice on guitar is pretty much his own. He sort of invented this kind of playing back in the 70's, well he and Larry Carlton. It's edgy but you can tell there's alot of polish under the grit. He can just as easily rip off Wes Montgomery or John Coltrane as Buddy Guy or the "Alberts". I understand some people not really digging his voice as it's very pure and doesn't have the stereo-typical gritty delivery that alot of blues or rock singers have, however there are plenty of vocalists that have the same kind of delivery and convey and interpret the tunes in their own cool way. Robert Cray for example...Robben sings just fine, he just doesn't sound like B.B. King. You won't be disappointed with this purchase. It's Robben at his most aggressive approach tone-wise and the spontaneity in the tracks can be felt, not just heard. I love this CD.Perhaps the guy that wrote the editorial review is not a guitar player, but anyone who is will love this CD.Robben Ford plays with great sophistication and intensity. The guitar is mixed hot.The vocals are excellent.

Just do yourself a favor and get it.With 20 stone-cold winners lined up shoulder-to-shoulder, this is not just the best Louis Jordan anthology available, it delivers more jubilation for the buck than just about anything in the Amazon jungle.
5-0 out of 5 stars not a loser in the bunch
from the 1st to the last song; all are tremendous...this is the way to make a CD...and that was the way to be an entertainer...

Giood reviews by ball above but, some of you are plainly over looking the double-sided lyrics of some of his tunes. To say that "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" has "Goofy" lyrics is not seeing the truth behind the words.

4-0 out of 5 stars THIS GUY KNEW HOW TO ROCK THE HOUSE
I HAVE LOVED JOHNNY WINTER FOR AS LONG AS HE'S BEEN AROUND. HIS EARLIER STUFF IS MORE ROCK AND ROLL, AS COMPARED WITH HIS LATER WORKS.THIS IS A GREAT CD, ROCK ME BABY, LUCILLE, ALL TORE DOWN, ARE ALL GREAT SONGS.ONE CONCERT I REMEMBER IS JOHNNY WINTER OPENING UP FOR STEVIE RAY VAUGHN (THE DOCTOR PEPPER MUSIC FESTIVAL ON THE PIER BY 42ND ST. IN NYC BACK IN THE 80'S).DON'T GET ME WRONG, I LOVE STEVIE , BUT LISTANING TO JOHNNY TEAR THE HOUSE DOWN JUST SHOWS HOW MUCH MORE HE HAD TO GIVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars too Cold
Johnny Guitar Watson had a Signature Sound on the Guitar along with his too cool vocals that always hit home. "a Real Mother for Ya" is stil a Monster Jam.He had a free flow style that worked. you can hear some Ray Charles Harmony in his overall delievery as well. the amazing thing about Johnny Guitar Watson is that he re-invented himself from the Blues&adapted to the Funk&brought along his own bag of the Funk. BrotherMan was doing it all as a Writer, Arranger, Producer&overall Multi Instrumentalist. He gave Social Commentary, always had Humor&a down home folk vibe that was timeless as his Guitar Playing.RIP ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a pioneer modern bluesman w/killer debut album
I would urge any blues cd collector to posses this album; with his raspy voice, hard guitar playing and mezmorizing harp playing, each and every song is solid. I especially like 'Leaving Truck' and "Checkin Up on my Baby' but they are all good on this cd. Even the linear notes and photos on this reissue are interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best debut albums ever by a contemporary bluesman
One of the most prominent figures in late 20th century blues, singer/multi-instrumentalist Henry St. Clair Fredericks played an enormous role in revitalizing and preserving traditional blues.5-0 out of 5 stars Comes out with a bang
This reissue is a good one. The music displayed here is a "roosty" sound that Clapton was seeking after he left the big ol' Marshall sound. Taj, the Band, Dave Mason, Delany & Bonnie..... & the closest he got to it was with the Dominos. Ry Cooder seems to get most of the PR for the guitar work on this album, but the real star is Jesse Ed Davis. He answers Taj's vocals & harps on these tracks from the opening track. While the trend of the day was to play LOUD, the playing of players such as Davis & Robertson was a welcome addition to the music scene. And yes, the Statesboro Blues later influenced a young Duane Allman to pick up a Coricidin bottle....if you are into Taj's "blues" work, this is the place to start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kind of Blues as well
I had read that this was B.B. Kings' favorite album. After hearing I can see why. I don't know what year this was produced, but from the cover photo it seems to be early in his career.
5-0 out of 5 stars The one, if one only
The material on this album is probably the most widely available B. B. King on the planet. Numerous inexpensive compilations include four or five of its tracks (often the most striking ones) along with tracks from other periods of King's career. Yet "My Kind of Blues" is the source, and it may be the purest expression of King's blues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Muddy Couldn't Be But You WILL Be Satisfied... Thrilled Actually
Elwood Blues calls this the greatest electric blues record ever made.Believe him even if he is a fictional character.Winter dragged Waters out of retirement and into the studio back in the mid 70's supported by a who's who of great blues side-men and this was the result.STUNNING.This is a must-have for even the most novice, junior, uninitiated blues enthusiast.Whoooooooooa yeah.Whooooooooa yeah.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blues landmark.
This session serves as one of the biggest landmarks in Blues history. If you consider in hindsight it was a very bold venture for Johnny Winter to undertake at a time in 1977 when disco music ruled the airwaves. Interest in Blues music was at an all time low. Winter himself could've earned more money doing commercial rock but instead used his time to revive Muddys career.I, for one, was SO glad he did this album because it came as a breath of fresh air to cut through the hype.
5-0 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING GONNA BE AWRIGHT THI' SMORNIN....
