4-0 out of 5 stars One Last Gasp of Genius!
My oldest daughter, now 23, became mesmerized by Chris Whitley's "Living With The Law" album when she was pre-school age. "Stones Under My Bed" is still her fave.
5-0 out of 5 stars Intens, hard-rocking, original.
Up till now my favorite Chris Whitley album was Dirt Floor. There's another favorite now; this latest album by the late great floor-stomping singer is raw and rocking with a twist. The hard drive works to perfection in combination with a souring violin. Buy this CD and if you do not own a copy of Dirt Floor buy that one two

4-0 out of 5 stars He will be missed
I saw Chris Whitley in Memphis three years ago, and I had goose bumps for days! For me, Reiter In is a must-have, since it is likely his last body of work.I own many Whitley cd's that I would rate as 5 star, but I was a little disappointed with the number of covers he did on Reiter In.My favorite Chris Whitley cd's reflect the technical genius of his guitar and soulful voice:War Crime Blues, Dirt Floor and Living With The Law. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Just plain flat and awful
Two stars because it's EC. However, i kept waiting for this to get some heart and soul and it never happened. I have no problem with Eric finishing off with Somewhere over the rainbow, but I thought he was going to finish it off with a gut wrenching searing solo, ala "Ain't nobody's business..." but he never did. I like to think of this as "Eric Plays the Holiday Inn, Altoona PA"

5-0 out of 5 stars great Clapton!
This album is between the"very best" of Clapton! There are just 2songs "weaks", Tears in Heaven and change the world, but all the other 18 songs......are powerful and superb! One more car, one more rider....is a must for a eric Clapton fan!

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid live album
I was able to see Eric Clapton in Oakland a couple of nights before the performance in LA at the Staples Center.

5-0 out of 5 stars One that lives up to its title
A lot of compilations have a title similar to this one, "the best of someone or other", yet still leave a lot to be desired.4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Restrspective of T-Bone's 1945-1960 Output
The electric guitar innovator gets the Rhino treatment with this 16-track collection of Imperial, Rumboogie, Capitol, Atlantic, Comet and Black & White sides. This is by no means the definitive collection of Walker's work, but it does serve as a nice retrospective of his 1945-1960 output.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delbert Rocks
This is a fine album worthy of purchase by anybody wanting to add to their Delbert collection.Has a number of songs that are really good but won't be found on any compilations.Get it and you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Listen to it over and over and never get bored.
The only luke warm review on this album says it wasn't enough straight up blues.Gee, Delbert showed some versitility. My how awful!
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough Straight-Up Blues
This CD is a good CD, but, depending on the cut, a little (or a lot) too R&B, reggae, cross-over pop, or rock sounding for my taste.I was looking for a good, solid blues album by McClinton. After a couple of listens, I don't consider this to be it, despite other customer reviews by blues afficionados who apparently do (and whose reviews influenced my decision to give it a whirl).Of the 11 tracks, I count 3, or maybe 4, tops, that have a true blues sound, and, even then, 2 of them are really "blues light."Of the 3 or 4, "Blues as Blues Can Get" is really enjoyable -- with Paul Shaffer playing Wurlitzer.Again, it's a good CD, and McClinton's lyrics are often clever and playful, but if you're looking for what I was looking for, I'd skip this one. ... One of the greatest concert recordings of all time. How could it be less, with B.B. King performing some of his best material before a literally captive audience in an Illinois prison? "Worry, Worry" and "How Blue Can You Get" take on deeper meanings here, although King works the latter's camp lyrics as if he were in a juke joint. His mix of down-home humility and commanding stagecraft is instantly appealing. And his guitar barks, sings, and squeals with such authority that this is a bravura performance from the first bent, soul-searing note. A true desert-island disc. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arguably B.B. King's Best
Fans often call B.B. King the king of the blues guitar, but if B.B. were only a brilliant guitarist he wouldn't be a household name for decades. B.B. King is also a powerful singer, a terrific interpreter of others' material, an effective bandleader and - most importantly - a thoroughly professional entertainer. You can experience all B.B. King's sides on the "Cook County Jail" CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of BB King
This CD captures the very essence of what makes Blues Boy King the King of the Blues. The power of BB's music thunders througout the CD. This album has the best rendition of "The Thrill is Gone" I have ever heard, and I've heard just about all the versions he has done over the years. You can almost see him crooning to the microphone with his eyes closed, and Lucille gives this song so much more with her solo at the end. If anything buy this CD for the "The Thrill is Gone"; as soon as you get it turn it up, sit down and close your eyes...

4-0 out of 5 stars An acquired taste, but try it
This album is kind of like wasabi: it takes some getting used to but if you do, you have a friend for life. You're in for a big surprise if you're expecting traditional blues from this old bluesman. This is techno remix blues, which obviously won't please some, but he pulls it off. Best-known and probably the best tune is "It's Bad You Know", played on WXRT in Chicago, who turned me on to the album. Most of the cuts are musical loops, not all of which work, but overall pretty solid and recommended for anyone wanting something different. Die-hard blues purists need not apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shuck Dub?
Dear Mr. Yates: Are you one of those turtle-neck wearing folks with plenty of money and a nose in the air? Are you one of those that believe that the Blues must adhere to some unforgiving rules that you made up? Get off yo' high horse and put down that pipe! The Blues have always been a "blasphemy", a walk downtown, a soulful melody, a harsh reality.... etc... The Blues NEVER did adhere to any rules of musical education. The Blues is the Blues because of a feeling, an attitude. This album has all of that attitude, irreverent as it is. Take off that turtle-neck sweater and listen to these grooves. Blues grooves. The only other artist to take the Blues to this level this decade has been G. Love. No, it's not your daddy's Blues.... but it is Blues.... fun Blues.... New Orleans Blues... Blues the way it was supposed to be: Fun, Exciting, Soulful and NOT standard! Blues with a capital "B".

3-0 out of 5 stars Only in it for money?
I'm laughing my fricken a** off. I read the review by Mr. "Thomas W. Yates" who states below "shame on fat possum....they used to be about documenting a pure, dying art form. now fat possum is all about "updating" the blues to "increase the audience"...fat possum only cares about the $$."

1-0 out of 5 stars Stinky Blues
I own quite a few Mayall albums over the years and I must say that this one is a stinker. The tunes are wornout and sour-pussed. Mayall is 70 going on 99. His armpits are too sweaty to play properly. Upon hearing this lame attempt at music I wondered how this old man even managed to stand up for the entire performance. My bet is that it was two or three or maybe even five nights of performances whittled down to this gunk. Sometimes I wondered if Mayall was even on the album. Just [...]

3-0 out of 5 stars Clapton a Disappointment
Eric Clapton is either the most hard headed guitarist on the face of the planet....or he just doesn't have a clue! What a fantastic opportunity, on Mayall's 70th birthday celebration, for him to break out his Gibson Les Paul and let us hear some ofthe old guitar tones and songs from the old Bluesbreakers LP that changed the face of blues/rock guitar back in the late 60's! This CD is ok, but could have been a milestone in blues/rock history.. Any Mayall fan will know what I mean. This was a great opportunity missed.

I wanted to like the North Mississippi Allstars, they seemed to have all the makings of a great band, southern, blues rooted, and future minded, but their Cds just weren't ringing my bell.I had just about given up on them when SIRIUS starting playing cuts from this CD on the Jam_On channel.Since I liked what I was hearing, I decided to give these guys one more chance.Boy am I glad I did!!!This CD lit a fire under me like nothing had done since I first heard Fillmore East.

Editorial Review

Guitar lovers will flip over this reissue's new bonus tracks: a conversation in which Stevie Ray Vaughan extols the virtues of Jimi Hendrix's playing and then essays them all in a medley of "Little Wing/Third Stone From the Sun." There's also the brief slide-guitar instrumental "Slip Slidin' Slim." What's breathtaking about these and the 10 remastered cuts that were the original 1985 album are the remarkably live amplifier tones. It sounds as though Vaughan's plugged directly into your stereo--especially at the climax of "Little Wing," where his Stratocaster feeds back through a wall of spinning Leslie speakers in a fit of psychedelic bliss. Otherwise, this CD still seems like a creative holding pattern for Vaughan, despite the addition of keyboardist Reese Wynans to broaden his band's palette. Nonetheless, the prophetic "Change It," which foreshadowed Vaughan's recovery from addiction by a year, and his in-concert staples "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up on Love" and "Life Without You" debut here. 5-0 out of 5 stars SOUL TO SOUL - STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN
With each new album you are able to hear subtle improvements and changes in Stevie Ray's style.Even though he uses the same songs he's sung in previous albums, they are refined and continue to be a joy to listen to.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT THE HELL!?
What am I missing here? This is an incredible album, even without the bonus tracks that make it beyond incredible. I think some SRV "fans" resent him making an album that has cross-over appeal. Hell, I would say "Change It," "Lookin' Out the Window," "Look At Little Sister," and "Say What" are as good a songs asSRV ever did. But there are a lot more great songs as well. And he does throw a bone to the blues/jazz crowd with the songs "Gone Home" and "Empty Arms." Of course the two Hendrix bonus tracks will blow you away. I will repeat what someone else has already said, Stevie played Jimi better than Jimi played Jimi. To people getting into SRV, trust me, this is a great album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic and timeless

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Debut Proves How Disabilities Can Be Overcome
Blind guitar hero Jeff Healey's debut album, SEE THE LIGHT, is a great debut which proves that a handicap doesn't have to be a handicap. Healey's guitar work is hot, recalling Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Johnny Winter, and Billy Gibbons, and his rhythm section of bassist Joe Rockman and drummer Tom Stephen is one of the tightest since Double Trouble. He does a great job with the rocker "Confidence Man", and his version of "Angel Eyes" is actually better than John Hiatt's exceptional original. Unlike some blues singers, Healey knows not to overemote, making this the best white blues debut since TEXAS FLOOD.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Album is Beyond Belief
I am 60 and have been listening to music since doowop in the 50s. Running across Jeff Healey in "Roadhouse" was a revelation. I just loved that music & recently ordered 3 JH CDS, all very good, but this is BEYOND belief. Every track is stellar. If I look with all my might for flaws, I cant find any. What a talent! Some people are handicapped, by their infirmity, not JEFF, he's unbeleivably great & this album proves it. I have nothing more to add that hasnt been said already by the other reviewers. Get this album, then you can die. Page, Clapton, Hendrix all must step aside for Jeff Healey. All Hail!

Editorial Review

This 16-track anthology spans the first decade of albino Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter's career, especially the early (1969-'73) Columbia albums that built his legend. While some purists have groused at his often manic precision, this collection makes a point of underscoring his impressive range as a musician. The fervent gospel-blues of "I'll Drown in My Tears" showcases Winter's vocal stylings (and is one of several tracks featuring brother and frequent sideman Edgar), then segues neatly into the spare, acoustic heat of the dobro-'n'-flute rarity "Come On in My Kitchen." But the emphasis is on Winter's showy rock star turns and the collaborations with his potent band (and fellow axeman Rick Derringer and his cohorts from the McCoys, of "Hang on Sloopy" fame) on "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo," "Still Alive and Well," and forceful live workouts of "It's My Own Fault" and "Mean Town Blues." His original, late-'60s power trio is on display here, too, and that small, formidable outfit can't help but emphasize the debt that Stevie Ray Vaughan and many of his musical progeny owe Winter. Indeed, Winters's bassist in the trio was none other than Tommy Shannon, who would enjoy another turn in the spotlight a decade later in Vaughan's Double Trouble. If American electric blues is your gospel, this collection should be one of its cornerstones of faith. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than I Remember
I saw Johnny Winter And when they were promoting this album in 1970(?) in Des Moines, Iowa. What a show!!! I had never seen a band so wild and good! They rocked the house that night! I thought I would catch up on the tunes this year and got the CD. I am surprised this is as good as I remember--actually better than I remember! The interplay on the guitars is exciting. Winterdominates the CD--even when he plays rhythm guitar. He truly is a talent of great magnitude. The band, Derringer and company (And),are tasteful and solid. They provide an excellent base for Winter to build on. I saw Winter's rock 'n roll panned by Docendo--the blues reviewer guy--and I understand his purity for the blues. For me though, if an artist can play in more than one style and be as expressive and skilled as Winter, and if it moves me, then I'm sold. Winter can play slide steel guitar, electric blues or rock 'n roll and I'm there listening!

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Winter's Rock Debut Touted As Supergroup
Greeted with much hoopla when released in 1970, Johnny Winter And united the blues guitarist sensation with guitarist/songwriter Rick Derringer. It was a successful pairing, resulting in the immortal classic "Rock And Roll, Hootchie Koo". A powerful quartet with solid material for the period. As you might expect, stunning guitar work.Mostly hard blues rock; but a cover of Steve Winwood's somber "No Time To Live", the introspective "Am I Here?", and "Let The Music Play" lend the album balance.A mostly forgotten great album from an unfortunately short lived group.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite JW album!
This album really rocks, and is my favorite of all of his albums.

I have the DVD of this and it is one of the greatest DVDs ever.I like the CD but the sound quality on some tracks is not what I expected. Some tracks are better than others, the stuff from '79 sounds great. I suppose Irish Tour, Stagestruck, and Live in Europe have spoiled me. It is a must have though just because its Rory.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Blues Have Never Been the Same
Look People, if you are looking for blues, this is the place. I have'nt even heard this yet. And I don't need to. Those who read this and have it in their heart will know what I'm talking about. Rory was a legend. He was so, because of his unique style and his dedication to his craft, and even more so for his ability to repell the temptations of the business in which he was in. Of all the music that is out there for us to listen to and enjoy and scrutinize, Rory still shines as an icon of the "roots" from which we all flourished as listeners. He played, he played extremely well and he played for us, and all that he asked in return was a smile. There are few of his fabric around today. Unless you are a dedicated follower of fasion, you will agree, that anything this man did in his life is worth more than a brief listen. So don't just listen, absorb! 3-0 out of 5 stars SOUNDS like SRV, doesn't PLAY like him
Some folks have claimed Jimmy sounds just like SRV. Maybe so. This very listenable blues set may have the SRV "sound" but Jimmy just does not have SRV's chops. Hell, who does? All-in-all this is a very average output; pretty good but nothing special.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I had heard that this was a great CD.Unfortunatly I do not find it that great. If you want great blues guitar check out Tab Benoit, Joe Bonamassa, or Nuno Mindelis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jimmy's Best
This CD rates as Jimmy D. Lane's best effort to date.Stevie's band Double Trouble brind out the best in Jimmy. The playing is tight and Lane's voice has never sounded better. The sound definetly has a SRV feel to it, but without sounding like a tribute CD to him (my biggest pet peeve with contempory blues guitarist). If your a fan of blues rock this one is worth spending a few $'s on. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 20 Stars on a scale of 1 to 5
To get right to the point, I consider this to be the greatest rock and roll album ever recorded. It is worth remembering that portions of this album were recorded live in Northern Ireland right in the middle of the "troubles." Most touring acts wouldn't even go near this area at the time because of the constant threat of violence. Consequently the audiences got to see few shows and were no doubt starved for some real rock & roll. Since Rory was first and foremost a live performer who fed off the energy of a crowd, the performances captured on this album are amazing for the passionate interplay and raw power of Rory's singing and playing (particularly his slide guitar playing.) Rory's band (Gerry McAvoy - bass, Rod D'Ath - drums, Lou Martin - piano) is tight as a drum and match his intensity---just listen to the absolutely jaw-dropping "Walk On Hot Coals," which to me has always been the absolute pinnacle of improvisational rock and roll playing. One thing I have always wondered, since this album was supposedly recorded at several locations on the same tour, is if the COMPLETE recordings still exist of the various shows that were taped? If only...

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best guitar albums of all time
I have been a guitarist my whole life and I listen to all the greats in blues, jazz, and rock and Rory Gallagher is probably the best guitarist to date...with the exception of Mike Bloomfield.Although guitarists like Clapton and Hendrix have contributed to the evolution of rock n roll guitar and its textural sound, Rory Gallagher is a better guitarist than both. Rory is much more fluent in roots music like blues, folk, celtic, and rock than that of Hendrix and Clapton. Rory's live performances dworf that of Hendrix and Clapton. If you are looking for a rock album that will knock your socks off...purchase Rory's Irish Tour album. It will show you exactly what I'm talking about. Another masterpiece is Live in Europe. Trust me, you will wonder why he wasn't more popular..which is still a mystery.Oh, by the way, you do not nee dto be a guitarist to love Rory...my best friend is not a musician at all and loves the guy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Irish Rock-Rory, King of Ireland
This is a terrific live recording of a much under rated artist whose life was cut short by abuse like so many. I would recommend this and Live At Montreux for any fan of Rory and just good blues based rock!!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

This 1971 collaboration between primal one-part-Delta/one-part-Detroit singer-guitarist John Lee Hooker and Southern California blues revivalists Canned Heat works in large part because all parties involved are a little off. Hooker, the most unsystematic of the major bluesmen of his generation, isn't a good fit for disciplined players; rather, he requires sidemen who play by feel. In harp player-guitarist Alan Wilson, the Crawling King Snake found a particularly sympathetic foil; sadly, Wilson died shortly after these sessions were completed. Roughly divided into spare, gritty Delta exercises and full-on boogie stomps featuring the full band, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal blues album and John Lee's best........
I wore a hole in this vinyl record simply because it was definitive blues at its best.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hooker n' Heat Boogies, but isn't perfect
Hooker n' Heat is a great collaboration between white blues players and the Hook (in my opinion, the best blues singer of all time). The recording is raw, stripped down and meaty.Reverb wasn't even added to John Lee's vocals or most of the instruments for that matter, which makes me think of After the Goldrush by Neil Young, also a profoundly stripped down record made the same year.Because of its simplicity, this album sounds very different than the Hook's famous late 50's, early 60's work.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is too intense...

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Knotch Album
These guys are really, really good musicians, plus, they love Our Savior!Saw them in concert this year for the first time and would love to see them again. Some very moving songs here; a terrific listen!

2-0 out of 5 stars Best work behind them???
This album was a disappointment..I judge good music on how often I find myself going back to listen to it.Quite frankly this album just doesn't have the songs to keep you hooked..There are 4 good songs on this disc which I suppose is okay considering the "one hit" wonders out there.Sunny Days, Trouble Is, Show You Love and I'm in the Way are all good songs. The rest of the music detracts from them..One of the other reviewers commented that the return to "root" and folk music made the album good.I think it made it ridiculous. After all, these are 4 white guys who, from the best I can tell, were not born in the bayou!!Anyway, Jars first album was by far the best. Each album has had a few good songs which keeps fans coming back but they need to seriously stop doing the "bluesy" stuff and return to their former style.Half a star for each "good" song!

5-0 out of 5 stars I play this album OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER...
This album just has a way with speaking to me about Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If you haven't listened to it, I highly recommend that you do.You will not be disappointed. It's that plain and simple.May you enjoy the sweet, gentle journey in God's grace and mercy! ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is the infamous "somebody-put-something-in-the-Waters" LP from 1968. A relative hit for Chess, it features the exalted bluesman bellowing over psychedelicized arrangements that owe more to Steppenwolf than Willie Dixon. Waters himself complained that the drums were too busy and the lead guitar sounded like a cat's meow. Not a bad critique. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like Electric Mud, watch the film!
It's funny how when it comes to the products that Amazon sells, company reviewers just happen to always write glowing reviews -except in this case. Here, Steven Stolder really picked the wrong recording to knock. "Electric Mud" isn't for everybody, but it's great for what it is. It sounds like the spirit of Jimi Hendrix possessed Muddy Waters for a session at Chess Records. This important album turned new generations of listeners onto the Blues. If you dig this album, then you must watch "Godfathers and Sons," a film which is the fifth disc in Martin Scorsese's "The Blues: A Musical Journey." In this documentary, Marshall Chess (the producer for "Electric Mud") explains the history of the project to none other than Chuck D.Furthermore, the film captures the reunion of the Electric Mud band with the addition of a DJ and rapper. If you've been able to put aside the negative reviews and find a place in your heart for "Electric Mud," the film is essential. As for me, I picked the disc up after watching the film. I am happy that the film turned me onto such a unique recording.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dylan Blew Off the Folk Purists, Muddy Blew Off the Blues Purists
I bought this LP a year or two after it came out, and to my Hendrix/Cream/Page 'energized' ears, Muddy Waters never sounded better!
4-0 out of 5 stars WHERE IS THE CAT?
I bought this lp in 1968,(for $1.77) It was in the bargain bins at JC PENNY. I was 14, and this was my introduction to muddy.OK I am very happy they released this on cd. It brings back a lot of fond memories. A lot of people slammed this album but I think it rocks. The sound quality of the cd is very good, but they edited out the cat screaming at the start of "tom cat" Anyway dont expect a traditional muddy waters album, but this is a lot of fun with the fuzz guitar, and driving drums. Now maybe they will release "after the rain" marshall chess's other cadet concept muddy waters album. ... Read more

  • Hybrid SACD

Reviews (15)

3-0 out of 5 stars This version should be pulled.
One of the requirements of SACD releases, as set forth by Sony and Phillips, is that there be at least an SACD (DSD) stereo layer. The surround DSD and hybrid Red Book PCM CD compatible layers are optional. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the stereo DSD layer on this release was taken from the Red Book 16/44.1 PCM master used to make the CD layer. So Blue Note skirted a basic requirement of the format they were releasing on by deceptively scamming consumers into thinking they were getting a true SACD.As far as anyone knows, however, the surround SACD layer was taken directly from the 2 inch multitrack and sampled to DSD, then remixed and mastered to the SACD surround layer.I haven't heard anything to the contrary. As it stands right now, I agree with Fremer that Blue Note should simply apologize, pull the current release, rerelease a proper SACD, and give past purchasers a free exchange.I listened to the surround layer at my parents house in Oregon and was pleased at the music and sound quality.I do think it is overall a bit emotionally monotonal and placid though, as the recent SNL (or was it Mad TV) spoof parodied. But I think people who buy it are looking for that.Still enjoyable.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Example of SACD
My rating of 2 stars applies to the SACD version of this record and not the CD.I consider the CD to be a 5 star recording. After carefully listening to both the two channel SACD mix and the CD stereo versions I could not discern an audible difference.I enjoyed the 5.1 mix and found the rear surround to be tasteful and subtle, not at all distracting, but, again, no significant improvement in detail except that created by spreading the sound around to five channels.A recent article on the "Stereophile" website suggests that the SACD mix in fact shares the same 16 bit lineage as the CD, which would explain why the two channel mix and the CD mix sound identical.Norah's label has cheated its customers with this one and should go back and do an actual DSD mix and replace these "CDs" for free or give us our money back. There is no reason to purchase this SACD in addition to or in lieu of the CD unless you are interested in listening to a standard resolution 5.1 mix.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this young lady...
I have to agree with the others - the SACD analog mix in 5.1 was a blunder(4 stars).I borrowed this from a friend for a test run.I have the same content on DVD/video - Very nice... - When I choose to listen only - I just turn off the TV and listen to a very good 5.1 DD/EX version.I admit it is not quite the quality of SACD but very good nonetheless.Spyro Gyra has 2 SACD's available and they are the standard for SACD comparison - absolutely flawless...Waiting for 2 of
