5-0 out of 5 stars Rock Out!
Of all the Ry Cooder cd's I have, this is the one I keep going back to, why?, well it really rocks!, it lifts my spirits when I'm in a blue funk, get's me on my feet! great riffs by Ry, no flash, just tasteful licks, he puts them in the right spots. Some of the cleverest lyric's you will hear, and the background vocals fit like a famous California glove, and the way Ry sings, well he could of had a second career, there are far worse voices out there that made it. get it and enjoy!

Editorial Review

The premise behind this compilation is somewhat unusual: classic tracks, yes, but classic tracks recorded by John Lee Hooker... and friends. Charles Brown, Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Los Lobos, and Bonnie Raitt are only some of the performers who appear here, and the tracks, selected from recordings made by the prolific guitarist since 1988, show that Hooker hasn't lost his touch. Among the highlights, there's a smokin' duet with Raitt on "I'm in the Mood," a rendition of "Boom Boom" with a guest appearance from Jimmie Vaughan, and a reprise of Hooker's 1956 hit "Dimples" with Los Lobos backing up. Mention must also be made of the lone solo track on this CD, the acoustic "Tupelo," which hearkens to Hooker's Delta blues roots. There are also three previously unreleased tracks, which are probably the real reason to get this compilation. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Orgasm For The Ears !!!
This is probably the most heart-wrenching, Heartfelt, Soulful, Powerfully Moving albums (I just ran out of adjectives) I have ever heard.....In ANY genere !!!! Total sensory overload.....which is saying a lot considering the "bare bones" feel of the album. This is Buddy stripped Butt Naked.......And he NEVER sounded better. Kudos to you Buddy. You are the master !!! Long may you reign !!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Warsaw cries Buddy
This is very overlooked new cd from Buddy, playing acoustic. True blues. Best effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ohhhh Doctor!!
This is a killer CD, a must-get for anyone who digs the blues. Much of the material is way downhome and gut-wrenching. CRAWLIN' KING SNAKE is a monster side and can stand easily beside John Lee Hooker's original. BLACK CAT BLUES is another Hooker tune and it too is marvelous. Guy's voice is deep and booming and the back-up session players (usually just bass, drums, and guitar) are restrained and add immensely to the proceedings. ANNA LEE and LONESOME HOME BLUES are also excellent takes on classic songs out of the blues tradition. This CD is what the blues is all about. Got an iPod? Save room 'cause you'll want to put this whole CD on it for repeated listening. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Still Waiting
I bought this with a lot of anticipation, but it seems like Kelley has played it safe with what sounds like a collection of pop/blues/soul tunes that don't have a lot of connection to each other. From the credits it looks like she is moving toward the old school blues/soul production with this Nicholson guy that does Delbert. Having been a fan of Kelley's from way back, it breaks my heart to see folks like Susan Tedeschi getting all the fame and fortune while Kelley struggles to get the recognition she deserves. I'm guessing that until Kelley moves toward the more cutting edge song selection and production circles that Susan has access to, things will remain pretty much the same. I am keeping hope alive and waiting for Kelley to find the right producer and/or manager who can help her get over the hump and be the star she deserves to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars You really should hear this album
This is a great album. It's Kelly's mix of blues, soul, gospel and more.It includes a roadhouse rocker duet with Delbert McClinton and a cover of The Beatles' "The Word" that will get you out of your chair testifying."It Ain't Over When It's Over" combines Gospel and New Orleans second line rhythms. The thing about Kelly is that she is both musically and spiritually uplifting. This is a blues album that will have you feeling GOOD after you listen to it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of a Grammy
I read a couple of the not-so-glowing reviews and had braced myself for a mediocre experience when I ordered this album. To my pleasant surprise (and shock, after what I'd read...see Rick Tharp's review), I was FLOORED when I finally heard it by how amazing, soulful, uplifting and inspirational this entire album is!How anyone can rate this as anything less than worthy of a Grammy is beyond me...these people either aren't listening, are having a bad day, or just don't appreciate insanely great music (not to slam their opinion...I just simply don't get it!).If you want to hear someone with more natural musical ability than the rest of us can ever dream of having, someone who epitomizes the term "getting DOWN," then you owe it to yourself to give this CD a listen. In particular, check out Waking Up Slow, The Word, When the Love Comes Through, and Long Way Home.I've cried tears of joy listening to these on many occasions since getting the CD.On the "sheer beauty" end of the spectrum, check out Would You Still Be There, That's What Makes You Strong, and New Shade of Blue. This woman has got it goin' on, and anyone who thinks this isn't a breakthrough album is waiting for music they're not going to hear until they've passed beyond this world...this is simply the best stuff you're ever going to get on this planet! This is one artist who deserves the spotlight, one who has polished her craft to perfection and inspires me personally on a daily basis.I will always feel immensely grateful to Kelley for giving me and all of us such a wonderful gift. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good follow-up to a magnificent debut album
Henry St. Clair Fredericks' first album, the eponymous "Taj Mahal", was a stripped-down collection of superbly produced acoustic Delta blues, and his second album, "The Natch'l Blues", opens with more of the same.
5-0 out of 5 stars Newport69.....were learning..
back in the late sixties if you were a music fan in So. Cali you got wind of Taj Mahal...he was an underground radio staple but you only heard his commercial sounding blues/rock stuff...when this album came out it was a shocker because it was so eclectic in the sense it was a blues primer 101....it was honest and most of all not blantly commerical...everything except "aint that alot of love" and "and your gonna miss your water"...is stripped down to the basics...you feel the emotion and care given to these songs....listening to these songs now is not a trip down memory lane but a cultural experience of the highest musical order....endulge yourself...alot of us "so cals" did

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Lighthearted' blues, but great music nevertheless
I first bought this (early spring 1969) probably more for the astounding-looking cover (both front and rear) than for any other reason; but I had an idea that the music was going to be really good, and I was right. The breezes would be blowing through open windows, and listening to this made me feel like I was already outside, someplace way out in the country. Read more

Editorial Review

Bonnie Raitt may call Chris Smither "my Eric Clapton," but Smither's importance has less to do with instrumental prowess than with fusing sonic textures and with finely crafted lyrics. Smither's best songs aspire to poetic insights via the blues, evoking troubled, complicated moods through the incessant, slinky groove of his guitar. Working again with session player and producer Stephen Bruton, Smither weds lilting acoustic blues arrangements with more ambitious, spacious sounds--including diverse percussive rhythms, piano, organ, and blues harp. The sonics are at times reminscent of Daniel Lanois's work with Bob Dylan. Smither's most memorable original work isn't found on this, his ninth album, though it may be his best collection. The only misstep is the zydeco jaunt "Tell Me Why You Love Me," which sounds out of place amid all the eerie meditations. In Smither's vision, folk music, like life, plays out "in very complicated measures / And they can't be simplified / If we just keep this together / All the rest is justified." And he shows the same intensity in his choice of covers, especially Tim Hardin's gorgeous "Don't Make Promises," here found in its definitive version. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How can you be this good and not be famous?
My only answer to the question I posed in my review title is that Chris Smither sings the type of music that is not usually played on the radio. If he were on the radio, everyone would own a Chris Smither album.
2-0 out of 5 stars Get "Waiting on a Train" Instead
After falling in love with Smither's newest CD, Waiting on a Train, I decided to try this one.A big disappointment! What I love about Smither on the new CD is how wonderful his guitar playing is and how well he accompanies himself. On Drive You Home Again, Bruton overproduced the album. There are too many musicians and just too much stuff going on that you only hear Smither as a singer. The arrangments lack all of the sweetness that makes Waiting on a Train so great.I would not recommend this CD.

Robert Cray adds a bit more soul to the mix on this album, which features the Memphis Horns most prominently. Most of the songs are Cray doing what Cray does best--slow, soulful, done-me-wrong (or, alternatively, I-done-wrong) songs chock full of great guitar. No complaints there, and when he adds a bit of vocal growl here and there, as on the album opener "The Forecast (Calls for Pain)" (also featuring some excellent bass from Richard Cousins), and the slow shuffle "Holdin' Court," it keeps things interesting. This album indicates a slight shift in Cray's direction; although he's always included a touch of soul in his blues, here it's more pronounced than before, a tendency he continued in subsequent recordings. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Rockin' after Midnite.
I never understandall the nay sayers who bust Robert Cray's chops because he covers much of the same ground. They call him safe and predictable. If you do something well and it pleases you, why not.I owned a few of these songs as CD singles before acquiring this CD on Amazon.I can not find fault with any of these cuts. His voice is strong and assured.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not the most heard, but the best
This album followed _Strong Persuader_, which made Robert Cray famous. While SP is a terrific album, I tend to like Midnight Stroll even more.It has an excellent mix of upbeat songs that are catchy but have an edge ("Consequences," "Forecast Calls for Pain") and some excellent slow, sad blues as well. This album shows why Robert Cray is deservedly revered by guitarists, singers, and songwriters -- and why some of his more recent stuff is a bit disappointing by comparison.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coming into his own
Midnight Stroll is an album I never get bored of listening to. Robert Cray and The Robert Cray Band are beginning to define their own sound which is deep and funky. From the raunchy "Forecast" with the historic Memphis Hornsto themoving "The Things you do to me" and the classic "Bouncing Back" this is a must for any serious music buff. ... Excitement doesn't come cheap, and Popa Chubby gets it every way he can in these 13 eclectic songs. The New York City singer/axe-mangler keeps things rolling at a heart-thumping pace by one-upping Satan on "Slide Devil Man Slide" and the jazz-inflected instrumental "The Devil's Guitar," running drugs in "Smuggler's Game," and cranking the steel-on-steel peal of six-string slide to the max. But he makes time for soul, too, plunging into the funky old-school R&B of "Back in My Baby's Arms" and covering Mississippi hill country matriarch Jessie Mae Hemphill's prayerful "Lord, Help the Poor and Needy" (retitled here "In the World"). Toss in the blues-rocker "Long Deep Hard and Wide" and the acoustic bluegrass thriller "Buffalo Chips"--where Chubby blazes through a sweet and breezy melody on mandolin, Dobro, and guitar--and you've got the full profile of an artist whose talent is even bigger than his considerable girth. 4-0 out of 5 stars Another Decent Release By The Big Man!
This is an interestingly different blues recording from Popa Chubby. There are plenty of noteworthy guitar licks and all original tunes, with the lone exception of the cover of Jessie Mae Hemphill's "In This World". As you might expect from this unusually large man, he is all over the place on this recording. The CD opens with "Slide Devil Man Slide" with lyrics spoken in a manner which made me recall the 70's "Hot Rod Lincoln" by Commander Cody. He maintains that rather awkward style on two other tracks, "Young Guns" and "Smugglers Game." While that is style will not appeal to everyone, Popa returns to a rocking blues style on songs like "Long Deep Hard and Wide" and two up-tempo instrumentals, "Kinda Dicey" and "Buffalo Chips."To me the standout track is the mid tempo "Why I Can't Have You." Overall, this is not as good as some of Popa's earlier releases but in this day of cookie cutter blues, the originality of this composition is worth noting.

5-0 out of 5 stars best Popa Cnubby CD so far
I post this review on Amazon when the CD came out in Europe not long ago. Now after several weeks of listening I can only confirm my first impression - best Popa Chubby recording so far! Recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch John Lee Hooker
This is a great John Lee Hooker and probably one of the best blues albums period. The sound quality on this album is top notch (this is not true with all John Lee Hooker material or blues in general). This also includes some of Hooker's best songs, including "It Serves You Right to Suffer" and "Sugar Mama".
5-0 out of 5 stars It serves you right to suffer
This is the real deal. John Lee Hooker with some of his strongest blues and at a rock bottom price. YOu can't beat it with a stick!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of John Lee's best...
Don't let the price fool you, this is not some bargain bin compilation, this was an official release from John Lee Hooker, and a great one. This disc is one of his strongest efforts from the 1965-1974 period. There isn't a weak song on here. "Shake It Baby" is one of my favorite John Lee songs and has an awesome high scream from him towards the middle. "Decoration Day" is another classic as is the title track. This CD captures all the moods of John Lee Hooker, the slow and brooding, the uptempo boogie, and everything in between. I would have spent three times as much on this great disc, but for $7 this is a STEAL. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Striking at the Heart of the Blues ... Hitting Dead Center
Taj Mahal (American jazz & blues artist) and Toumani Diabate (famous Mali kora musician) explore the roots of the blues from its very source ... they show us how remnants of the past are contained in the blues music of today. The music and oral tradition of the griots, who sang the praises of the kings in ancient times, plus the music of the hunters, termed termed wassoulou, form the basis and foundation of the blues. Ancient instruments, such as, the kora, a 21 stringed, harp-like instrument combine with modern blues guitar music. There are astonishing improvisations and melodies which have the listener, tapping one's fingers and moving one's body in response to the music ... Some of the songs are classics, from either Mali or the American blues, others are original songs which arose during the jam sessions. In either case, it is great music by anyone's definition or standards ...4-0 out of 5 stars The Primordial Roots of Music
The Bottom Line: An organic roots album with simple but evocative melodies and accompaniment. Surpising blend of two musical traditions more similar than different. Like long lost brothers reuniting. 5-0 out of 5 stars Cultures blended

If you buy this record, get ready to dance your heinie off!Man this swings so hard you just can't help getting out of your chair to shake your bum.Not even the softest, cushiest, coziest Lay-Zee-Boy reclining armchair will prevent you from doing so.No kidding.Even if you are the laziest son-of-a-gun on your side of the Mississippi, you won't be able to help yourself. The swingin' power of this album is impossible to resist.

If you're a fan of Colin James you will love this album.By far this is his best album yet. IM Looking forward to his next release, this band is maturing like a fine wine and is just getting better..

4-0 out of 5 stars Jimmy Stewart Meets The Stray Cats
What I appreciate most about listening to music,is to be surprised, and this little gem provided a pleasant surprise.Totally unpretentious and completely rewarding.I was not familiar with Colin James before thisoffering, but from now on I will be looking out for him and the band!Fromthe opening song,Jump From Six to Six,the mood is set. This is a seriouslyfeel good CD and who gives a stuff what the neighbours think.I found myselfdancing around, but there was something else..it was the smooth delivery ofMr James that helps this stand apart.I would recommend you listen toSomethin's Goin' On In My Room, and you will be hooked. This has the familiarswing sound of the 40s with a touch of Harry Connick Jnr with a lashing ofthe Stray Cats thrown in for good measure. This CD will not change theworld, but it will make you feel good about yourself andif you like wellplayed swing and that big band sound,it will be money well spent. Mr Jamessparkles on Lets Shout, and this evenly paced offering should appeal to theveteran swinger to the first timer out for the first time away from thatsoul destroying papp that gets played on commerical radio, that passes forinnovative and *cool*. Like every good club set,the Band can relax and slowthe pace a bit,and I personally would recommend You Know My Love as astandout. I am not one to say I find it difficult to take a CD off theplayer, but I will admit that this can stand a bit of constant playing.Iwould say the third fourth and fifth plays will convince you that the moneyyou spent was not wasted. I must admit I have not attempted to delve todeeply into the technical playing styles nor the crisp productionqualities, that are evident on this recording...I have listened to this asthough I was with Jimmy Stewart in the Glen Miller Story, and as though Iwas out for a good time.I am throughly satisfied with my journey. 3-0 out of 5 stars solid, professional and really good
This is one of those records that is tough to rate on a scale of 1-5 stars. It's not as good a project as One of the Fortunate Few, Never Been Rocked Enough or Nothing Personal. So you can't give it four or five stars, but it's better than three stars which seems to be an journeyman perfomance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Triple Threat!
It's rare that you find a single CD with such force.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album
"Don't Want To Love You Anymore" is worth price of album. Starkly simple, elegant, and the saddest love song I've ever heard. (This should have been the single!) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars All Sizzle No Steak
Unlike many "die hard" C&W fans reviewing this album who do not like this becasue they want contemporary dorks singing Hank's calssics or they never heard of artists like Beck; I hate this cd for other reasons. The main one is becasue it blows.A legend being covered by a star-studded lineup would make you doubt this review but it's true.I love Petty, Beck, Dylan and others on here and I also love great county music.Sadly, none of this matters here as the songs are lifeless, awkward, and depressing. It is a $3 cd at best with no songs worthy of any quality jukebox nor has any redeeming value for completists who want the rare b-side. If you must, download Emmylou's "Alone and Forsaken" as it is the best song of the bunch (and that aint sayin much)

5-0 out of 5 stars not country, not supposed to be
I think you country fans are being a little hard on this one. I think the point of this album is to, not only pay tribute to THE greatest singer songwriter of all time, but to introduce him to people who may not otherwise have heard his music. Who wants to hear Bocephus sing more of his daddys songs? He's done that already. When Hank Sr. Was alive and making music , there were only really 2 types of popular music (as opposed to the virtually limitless styles we have now ) being made: country & blues, both styles Hank openly embraced. So this album also pays tribute to that very same spirit of experimenting and cross-pollenation. Every artist on this album is notorious for dipping their respective feathers in many musical inks. Tom Petty, Keith Richards,Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams & Hank III's contributions are the standouts to me , but there isn't one bad tune here. Anyone with a genuine love for Music, will appreciate 'Timeless'. Maybe modern ''Country'' artists like Toby Keith, Travis Tritt ,Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney etc. should take notice of this one ,organize a stellar and respectful tribute the way Mr.Bob Dylan did here, and pay a little of their own respect to the Long Gone Daddy that made it possible for their music to be heard today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly, A "Timeless" Album!!
Boy,when I first listened to this tribute to the famous Hank Williams Sr., I thought, "Wow, how different this is!".

5-0 out of 5 stars A legend.....each and every song a hit!
Buddy Guy is one of my all-time favorite bluesmen....and this is the album which started it all for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding !
Every track on this compilation is strong, no doubt about it.I like much of Buddy's later work but I keep returning to the sides he recorded for Chess in the 60s.Fortunately, the sound quality is excellent for that era and doesn't get in the way at all. There is great variety in this set and I have difficulty picking favorites but these tunes do make it easy to see why so many musicians have been influenced by Buddy. It's obvious to see that young Buddy was more than capable of leading a band.Typical of Chess Records, the CD booklet has a great historical perspective and complete song info.what a band Buddy had together back in the 60's!Lafayette Leake, Little Brother Montgomery, Leonard Caston and Otis Spann alternated on piano, Jack Meyers and Phil Upchurch on bass, Fred Below, Al Duncan, Phil Thomas and Clifton James on drums plus a host of other talented players.Enjoy the newer mucis Buddy has made but don't forget his first golden era.Great stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very On Point Collection
Buddy Guy is One of the Baddest Blues Playing Guitar Players Ever to me.His tone is pure&He doesn't overkill on the heavyHanded Riffing&Soloing like some cats do. this Collection is a Great showcase of His Talent&Rawness. His Vocals are on point as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rock-a-Billy Romp
This album is EXCELLENT. Rock-a-Billy and R&B in its purist form. This album could have easily been at home on Sun Records.Stand out songs are The Girl From Hell, a new arrangement and recording of the Stray Cats' classic Rock this Town and Texarkana to Panama City.Lee has put together a great band and a great record. And don't miss his live show, it is fantastic! The guys are super cool and super talented.

3-0 out of 5 stars DECENT OUTPUT FROM EX KITTY
The Stray Cats have continued on and off with some reunion tours, its members have pressed on. The most notable might be Brian Setzer and his, again, bloated big band albums. But while Setzer has been in the spotlight on occasion, Lee Rocker has really never strayed from what the Stray Cats were all about. If you need any more proof, just look at the back of this disc, where he is holding a standup bass over his knee and plucking the hell out of it. The latest release from Rocker is what you would come to expect from someone who only knows rock and rockabilly and how vivacious the genre can be when done right. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a feel good album...
10 years I've had this cd, and it has been a constant favorite.I also love the heavily instrumented and "loud" albums of buddy guy and junior wells, but this album is much different. It covers a completely different mood, occasion for listening.
5-0 out of 5 stars Acoustic greatness
This is two old blues pro's and running mates doing it up!
5-0 out of 5 stars What a Team!
The magical synergy of Junior Wells and Buddy Guy was apparent in"Hoodoo Man Blues", recorded before Buddy Guy was well known.Junior Wells' subsequent solo works, while workmanlike, have never achieved the same pinnacle (e.g., Come On Into This House). With this joint effort, that synergy is back.
