3-0 out of 5 stars No Crossroads Duel, No Problem
I see that most of the reviewers for this record are disappointed that the Cooder-Vai duel didn't appear on the soundtrack album. That's understandable. But for me, that was better experienced as video.Personally I think the high point of the soundtrack, and the movie for that matter, was the electric guitar bottleneck piece "Feelin' Bad Blues".It is fantastic. It sounds like the guitar may be accompanied by a hammer dulcimer toward the end.I played this for a young guy I work with who is a heavy metal fan and is just discovering the blues. He got wide-eyed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I just wanted to correct a post I read earlier...
All of the best cuts from this movie are actually located on Steve Vai's CD entitled "The Elusive Light and Sound". It is a very excellent CD, and has over 40 tracks on it. Thats all, Thanks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Soundtrack
Good sountrack, and while I think that the idea was to lean towards blues on this release, some of the best music from the movie isn't on this release. To get that you need the movie DVD, and though I have no complaints in seeing the movie to get hear these tracks, it would have been nice to have them included on the soundtrack. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars sublime slide guitar
Robert Randolph plays a pedal steel that competes in a league with Duane Allman. OK, Allman is the best. However, this is the best slide - or pedal steel played like a slide - that has been available since Duane left this planet. If you enjoy great guitar music, you can not be without this album. Robert Randolph has other albums out, but none has lived up to the Word. Since he is still young, maybe Robert Randolph will blow us away in the future - he is certainly capable - but until then, this album features the best slide playing in this millenium.

1-0 out of 5 stars Souless, Tedious Noodling.Good for napping.
When did music sans structure or direction become so hip.
1-0 out of 5 stars Gospel gumbo
Growing up in country & western land I'm used to pedal steel. Having taken a liking to the blues some 35 years ago, I knew the Allstars. And being from the south, gospel is a weekly experience. Throwing all this in the pot and stirring produces a gumbo of styles. Top it off with one of my favorite songs of all time, the great I'll Fly Away. It's not for everyone. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Horribly Disappointing
Like many others I had eagerly awaited the release of this album.KWS's first three albums were so fantastic and I expected this one to be at least as good, if not better.Unfortunately, it falls far short of my expectations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Keeny Wayne Rocks Once Again
I will start out by agreeing with everyone that is not his best album by any means, but I will also say that it is very good. The sound is different from the first three but it is still some great guitar.
2-0 out of 5 stars Kenny, get back to your roots!
This album is a disappointing departure from the signature, blues rock sound of KWS.Kenny seems to be hunting for a new musical persona, with varied results resembling Lenny Kravitz, pop rock, and progressive rock.

5-0 out of 5 stars WELLDESERVED RECOGNITION
I am lucky enough to have been acquainted with Johnny A and his mesmerizing talent for decades...it is so satisfying to see him finally getting the recognition he deserves. Buy this CD and his first release Sometime Tuesday Morning and you will understand what all the hoopla is about.
4-0 out of 5 stars Musicality and monster chops
This is a most enjoyable set of instrumentals, and the only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because I heard the man live, playing a killer set, before I bought this CD. In an intimate club setting, Johnny A burns the house down, and plays with a raw intensity that this studio recording does not quite catch. It's an excellent record nonetheless, full of masterly yet understated guitar playing, and solid songwriting. The soloing is concise and every note counts. If you really want to spoil yourself, see the man live withhis trio...very awesome, and not just for guitar geeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get inside, put your seatbelt on, and enjoy the ride.
You'll cruise by quaint country scenes, race a train skirting rolling hills and rustic mountains. You'll make it all the way to Nashville via gritty city streets past all the coolest jazz and rock clubs. That's where you'll go when you put "Get Inside", a slick offering from Johnny A, in your CD player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining, A Great Listen
I first heard of Guy Davis while watching Noggin with my daughter. Then I caught the tail-end of an interview he did promoting Skunkmello on NPR. I love his raspy voice and clever tongue-in-cheek lyrics and of course the blues style is classic in its own right. If you like blues or something original and not produced at a huge music factory (a la most music released today), then this is a great buy. I actually downloaded it from iTunes (I prefer not to have to store more CD's) and have enjoyed it imensely! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delbert Rocks
This is a fine album worthy of purchase by anybody wanting to add to their Delbert collection.Has a number of songs that are really good but won't be found on any compilations.Get it and you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Listen to it over and over and never get bored.
The only luke warm review on this album says it wasn't enough straight up blues.Gee, Delbert showed some versitility. My how awful!
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough Straight-Up Blues
This CD is a good CD, but, depending on the cut, a little (or a lot) too R&B, reggae, cross-over pop, or rock sounding for my taste.I was looking for a good, solid blues album by McClinton. After a couple of listens, I don't consider this to be it, despite other customer reviews by blues afficionados who apparently do (and whose reviews influenced my decision to give it a whirl).Of the 11 tracks, I count 3, or maybe 4, tops, that have a true blues sound, and, even then, 2 of them are really "blues light."Of the 3 or 4, "Blues as Blues Can Get" is really enjoyable -- with Paul Shaffer playing Wurlitzer.Again, it's a good CD, and McClinton's lyrics are often clever and playful, but if you're looking for what I was looking for, I'd skip this one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Holy Crap This Thing Is Good
I wanted to like the North Mississippi Allstars, they seemed to have all the makings of a great band, southern, blues rooted, and future minded, but their Cds just weren't ringing my bell.I had just about given up on them when SIRIUS starting playing cuts from this CD on the Jam_On channel.Since I liked what I was hearing, I decided to give these guys one more chance.Boy am I glad I did!!!This CD lit a fire under me like nothing had done since I first heard Fillmore East.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Hill Country Blues
I disagree about the sound quality. This is HILL COUNTRY BLues! It's sounds like that. This is a great example of that music style and it's a joy to listen to.I like kicking back to these guys - feels like a back porch on a summer night. It's earthy and REAL, not some sound studio contrived CD.Unfortunately, today most people are used the the big studio productions. ... Editorial Review

Guitar lovers will flip over this reissue's new bonus tracks: a conversation in which Stevie Ray Vaughan extols the virtues of Jimi Hendrix's playing and then essays them all in a medley of "Little Wing/Third Stone From the Sun." There's also the brief slide-guitar instrumental "Slip Slidin' Slim." What's breathtaking about these and the 10 remastered cuts that were the original 1985 album are the remarkably live amplifier tones. It sounds as though Vaughan's plugged directly into your stereo--especially at the climax of "Little Wing," where his Stratocaster feeds back through a wall of spinning Leslie speakers in a fit of psychedelic bliss. Otherwise, this CD still seems like a creative holding pattern for Vaughan, despite the addition of keyboardist Reese Wynans to broaden his band's palette. Nonetheless, the prophetic "Change It," which foreshadowed Vaughan's recovery from addiction by a year, and his in-concert staples "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up on Love" and "Life Without You" debut here. 5-0 out of 5 stars SOUL TO SOUL - STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN
With each new album you are able to hear subtle improvements and changes in Stevie Ray's style.Even though he uses the same songs he's sung in previous albums, they are refined and continue to be a joy to listen to.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT THE HELL!?
What am I missing here? This is an incredible album, even without the bonus tracks that make it beyond incredible. I think some SRV "fans" resent him making an album that has cross-over appeal. Hell, I would say "Change It," "Lookin' Out the Window," "Look At Little Sister," and "Say What" are as good a songs asSRV ever did. But there are a lot more great songs as well. And he does throw a bone to the blues/jazz crowd with the songs "Gone Home" and "Empty Arms." Of course the two Hendrix bonus tracks will blow you away. I will repeat what someone else has already said, Stevie played Jimi better than Jimi played Jimi. To people getting into SRV, trust me, this is a great album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic and timeless

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Place to Get a Taste
This collection focuses on the very early Taj Mahal and contains most of his early classics. For anyone not familiar with this artist this is a great place to start. You get a full taste of "Taj Mahal", "The Natch'l Blues" and "The Real Thing"(with the tuba band), his first 3 excellent albums, and it is obvious from these how eclectic a blues performer he is. Taj Mahal has always been one of my favorites, and he presented one of the best live shows I have ever seen. He is touring this summer so check him out if you get a chance, and delve deeply into the rest of his recorded material, particularly "Senor Blues".

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Find!
I had heard the name, Taj Mahal over the years but never took the time to investigate his music. Then one day while listening to the radio, the song "Fishing Blues" came on and it sparked my interest. When I saw that he had this "Best Of..." collection I figured it would be a good place to start. Well,I haven't stopped playing it since I recieved it. What a find, this is great music! Every track on this cd touched me in some way. Songs like "Statesboro Blues", "Leaving Trunk", and "She Caught The Katy" are gritty, bluesy, and soulful. Taj sings with a voice that was made for the blues, and plays a mean harmonica to boot.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a phenominal way to be introduced to Taj

3-0 out of 5 stars SOUNDS like SRV, doesn't PLAY like him
Some folks have claimed Jimmy sounds just like SRV. Maybe so. This very listenable blues set may have the SRV "sound" but Jimmy just does not have SRV's chops. Hell, who does? All-in-all this is a very average output; pretty good but nothing special.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I had heard that this was a great CD.Unfortunatly I do not find it that great. If you want great blues guitar check out Tab Benoit, Joe Bonamassa, or Nuno Mindelis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jimmy's Best
This CD rates as Jimmy D. Lane's best effort to date.Stevie's band Double Trouble brind out the best in Jimmy. The playing is tight and Lane's voice has never sounded better. The sound definetly has a SRV feel to it, but without sounding like a tribute CD to him (my biggest pet peeve with contempory blues guitarist). If your a fan of blues rock this one is worth spending a few $'s on. ... This 1976 effort contains some of Cooder's most compelling work and findshim reexploring some of the fundamental influences on a musician known forremarkable eclecticism. Most notable are "Always Lift Him Up," "Smack Dab in theMiddle," and a beautiful adaptation of "Stand By Me" (which includes Flaco Jimenez onaccordion.) The album opens and closes with covers of Leadbelly, namely "TheBourgeois Blues" and (you guessed it) "Goodnight Irene." Also notable is a fine reworking of the traditional number "I Got Mine." 5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes I have a great notion to jump into the river and drown.
There are few albums, sigh, all to few, from the mid-seventies that bear repeated listening 30 years later.
5-0 out of 5 stars We means to shoot some craps!
For starters, I don't know how much weight one can put into the opinion of someone who listens to music for the sake of `being hip'. I'm quite sure that Mr. Cooder is more interested in the actual quality of the music - one need look no further than his fall out with the Stones for evidence of this.
5-0 out of 5 stars True roots music; I'd'a never guessed how much I'd feel this.
Man, I'm'a say it again: this is ROOTS music. This is folksy-bluesy-inspirational-Gospelesque music. An' it's still good for drankin' some beers on a warm n' windy Saturday afternoon after puttin' in yet another weeks worth of hard labor. I discovered this by accident, y'all. I accidentally listened to it from front 'ta back an' I accidentally loved it.

This 1971 collaboration between primal one-part-Delta/one-part-Detroit singer-guitarist John Lee Hooker and Southern California blues revivalists Canned Heat works in large part because all parties involved are a little off. Hooker, the most unsystematic of the major bluesmen of his generation, isn't a good fit for disciplined players; rather, he requires sidemen who play by feel. In harp player-guitarist Alan Wilson, the Crawling King Snake found a particularly sympathetic foil; sadly, Wilson died shortly after these sessions were completed. Roughly divided into spare, gritty Delta exercises and full-on boogie stomps featuring the full band, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal blues album and John Lee's best........
I wore a hole in this vinyl record simply because it was definitive blues at its best.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hooker n' Heat Boogies, but isn't perfect
Hooker n' Heat is a great collaboration between white blues players and the Hook (in my opinion, the best blues singer of all time). The recording is raw, stripped down and meaty.Reverb wasn't even added to John Lee's vocals or most of the instruments for that matter, which makes me think of After the Goldrush by Neil Young, also a profoundly stripped down record made the same year.Because of its simplicity, this album sounds very different than the Hook's famous late 50's, early 60's work.

Editorial Review

Ry Cooder has long had an interest in other people's music, from the blues and gospel of black America through classic jazz and the music of Cuba. Even by this standard, his meeting with Mohan Vishwa Bhatt is certainly a departure. He is neither a serious student of Indian music nor in any way a master of its intricacies. Yet on his improvised session (this album was recorded without rehearsal in one evening), he and Bhatt truly collided musically and created moments worthy of the world-music Grammy they received for it. Bhatt is an iconoclastic character himself. He plays a modified box he calls the mohan vina that is a hybrid of a classical Indian instrument and slide guitar. He is long trained in the arduous classical style, yet his work has always demanded a lot of freedom. His duets here with Cooder are completely unique, liberating both artists from the usual constraints and creating a new musical style that is unlikely to be repeated or imitated. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do your ears a favor! Get this one!
if you;re anyway involved with slide guitar playing, then get this one. cos it's one of the most outstanding slide-blues-fusion albums ever made. even if you have never heard indian music, it'll still grown on you, pretty soon. VM Bhatt is a master at his music & his instrument. And Ry Cooder is no less. i love both these guys' playing. But be warned that this is a VM Bhatt album featuring Ry cooder and not the otherway round. So apart from the fact that Ry's playing is always minimalistic, there's pretty little of Ry's sound on this album. But it still manages to keep me riveted for some reason. but his blues licks are so well timed and phrased, there's no words to describe what he does. and the chords he uses to accompany VM Bhatts passages, are so colorful. and for the real hardcore blues fans theres atleast one tune ' ganges delta blues' . man it's just awesome, with all the precussion and stuff. it amazing. i got more than i expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars In the true spirit of confluence
The album truly encompasses the spirit of the confluence, of different worlds, different music, different thoughts, united in harmony, in the cool shade of the banks of the ganges.
3-0 out of 5 stars Cooder aint up to par...
Its a good cd, if you like the music. It may not be what you are used to. Listen to the audio clips. Nice slide guitar playing. Personally, i think Ry Cooder gets killed on this one, the blues licks just seem a little crude and basic compared to V.M. Bhatts licks...granted, he's more used to the style of music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Second copy
I really love this CD.It goes everywhere with me the house, the car, work and parties.I've carried it around so many places and played it so much that it developed a scratch that I couldn't get out! That's why I had to have a second copy!I can't do without Kenny!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as bluesy as his earlier albums.
I am a huge fan of Kenny Wayne Shepherd. But I was disappointed in "Live On."It's more hard rock than blues.Naturally, it's all a matter of personal taste. If you likemore of a hard sound, you may like this. But it's quite a departure from his earlier work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live On is an enticing blend of Blues/Rock
If you like guitar driven blues with a twist of classic rock than you'll love this album.Kenny's playing is excellant and unlike other critics I think the vocals are fine for this genre.Excellant rocked up version of Oh Well is one of many highlights. In 2 Deep and Last Goodbye are great songs. Was,Shotgun Blues and You Should Know Better do not dissapoint. All told 14 tracks for your pleasure. There are those of us that think KWS, Joe Bonamassa and Rob Tognoni are carrying the blues/rock-classic rock torch. The sad part is how few realize how great a job they are doing. If you like these three then check out Bill Perry, Smokin' Joe Kubek and Gary Moore. ... Houma homeboy Tab Benoit may have snuck up on some blues fans, but his status as the best and brightest of modern Louisiana bluesmen is now too obvious for any to ignore. His swamp-saturated sound and incisive Telecaster attack, also heard on the Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gumbo blues
Tab gives one of his best album performances with raw edged blues, Louisiana-style.

4-0 out of 5 stars In New Orleans the Blues will Never Die
Guitarist Tab Benoit's newest presents a lively aray of cajun flavored sounds -- from straight ahead blues to Zydeco. In the wake of the Katrina disaster it will contribute to our resolve that the spirit and sounds of New Orleans and the Bayou will be seen and heard again.Laissons les Bons Temps Roulez!

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!
This is Tab's best studio CD since Standing on the Bank. I Smell a Rat is the BOMB! Tab is mistaken for a "new" artist. He has been recording since 1992 and only plays smaller venues. This is part of the reason for his limited notariaty. The other part of the equation is his determination to play only blues and not go commercial (rock) with his music. I own every CD he has put out. Each one shows his progression as a guitarist and performer. I think Fever for the Bayou is a return to his earlier music with out all the extra instruments and vocals. If you ever have the chance to see Tab live, do it. The show will blow you away! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Best of Delbert
If you like Texas Twang this one is for you. Great music with rockin' sound. Delberts history with other musicians thru the years is unbelievable but after you hear his music you can believe. The guy the taught John Lennon to play harmonica.Country rock at its best

5-0 out of 5 stars The Birth of a Future Guitar Legend
I was introduced to Shannon's music when I saw her open for Lennon on their Acoustic tour in early 2006. It was just her and her guitar, with Paul Lamm on bass and she blew the roof of the place. This woman is amazing and she will be huge next year when her new album comes out!
5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
I love this woman's voice, wish she would come out with something more recent. This CD has been on heavy rotation on my player for the last two months and does not seem to be moving. Love the raw sound and guitar. Amazing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Real Talent But Not Entirely What I Expected
I bought the CD based on the Amazon Recommendations associated with past purchases of blues music, but am surprised to find that it has a strong country sound. Shannon is an amazing talent with a shockingly sound and mature voice, and several of the songs are fabulous, but the tunes with the country sound are off-putting to me. It is a great CD, but proceed knowing that some have a blues-y sound and some have a country sound. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you again for another great cd.
You just can't go wrong with "Indigenous". They are different, original and they capture a mood. What I mean by that is, their music puts you in a certain mood. You know how some songs take you to another place in your mind(or your past)? Well this music has that affect in a very positive way. The vocals are very good, almost haunting at times, but in a good way. Great stuff!

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Native American band to ever come out of North Dakota..
The best Native American band to ever come out of North Dakota! Produced by Doyle Bramhall. I hear many influences such as Hootie, ZZ Top, Allmans, and Santana but no really strong songs like those bands are known for. Decent album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent....but not his best live recording
I was introduced to Delbert McClinton a number of years ago. Being a fan of Austin City Limits, I was watching his TV concert in 1989 and was blown away with his singing and his band's musicianship. A few years ago, I purchased his more recent live album and have given it a few listens, but it did not stick with me. So, when I saw this new live album, I wondered why it was issued. Well, it does add some new cuts from that time frame and Turn On Your Lovelight is just outstanding. So, if you would like to experience a great blues/rock singer in concert, consider this album. But if you don't have his live album recorded on Austin City Limits in 1989, buy that one first....it is an absolute 5 star adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars great concert!
This is Delbert in his environment - live, In Texas! There is not a bad song here. "LOVE LIGHT" in particular really kicks butt. Delbert is in fine voice and the band is super tight. Even though this concert is over 20 years old, it ranks as his best live recording. ... Read more
