5-0 out of 5 stars i remember thiswhen i wasup in maine...
i lived in portland for 7 months and i used to go to boston whenever i had a free weekend...listening to jennifer trynin's stuff and mary lou lord's ( i also like the pixies...)got me thinking about this one..i can't remember where i got it. maybe it was at a used bookstore or record shop...what attracted me to it was the second disk of spoken words stuff...patricia smith has a poem on here. i remember that. there is also a song by laurie gelman called " paris " that was particularly memorable..i haven't been to new england in 8 years...i'll have to get up there one of these days to see if it's still the same...

5-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BE A DUMMY!!!!!!
Don't be a dummy. Any fool knows the brothers Chess, Leonard and what's his name virtually wrote the book when it comes to Chicago Blues. It's a no brainer. Now I ask you, where else do you find a more classic lineup of stars? From Muddy to Wolf, from Little Milton to Buddy Guy, John Lee to JB, (Lenoir that is) And let's not forget Willie Dixon and Bo Diddley and so many more.5-0 out of 5 stars The best compilation of its kind
This is no mere publishing sampler. "The Classic Originals" gathers 36 of the very best blues and early rock n' roll singles cut at the legendary Chess studios in Chicago, and it provides the perfect introduction to men like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and numerous other recording artists from the 50s and 60s.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential for any CD collection
Anyone who knows the blues, knows rock, and knows R&B, needs this album! The liner notes say these two CDs could easily have been four, and I wholeheartedly agree! The tunes drift, casually, from blues, to rock, to R&B, and somewhere in the middle of all his music the listener finally "gets" how rock 'n' roll came to be. The sound quality is great. (Except for my track 4 on CD 1 of Sugar Mama, by John Lee Hooker, which was scratched, sadly.) Still, the music flows, deep, dark, and you can see the allure this music held for Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Savoy Brown and the many others who used this music as a jumping off spot for what emerged as middle-class rock in the '70s. Especially noteworthy on these two CDs are the phenomenal contributions made by Willie Dixon (the great bass-playing songwriter!), Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry. That's not to negate the other contributions, by any means. Not a weak track is among the 36 on this 2-CD collection! But listening to Muddy, John Lee, Chuck Berry and others, I am just blown away how MUCH of the music of the '60s and '70s is indebted to these musical giants, many of whom are sadly forgotten. There are a lot of blues-rock compilations out there, but this one stands far and above the others in terms of overall sonic quality, and in the selection of absolutely essential tunes. One of the sadly overlooked GREAT CDs of the '90s! Worth more than five stars... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For Chicago Blues fans ONLY
A short and sweet review:
5-0 out of 5 stars Teasin' Pleaser....
The Chess Blues Classics. Bellisimo, Baby. Great for an intro to the Chicago style post-Delta electric blues music--heck, this is great even if you're a longtime fan. This chronicles Chess Records move to their Michigan Ave. digs and the consolidating of some of their satellite small record companies into one big happy homestead. Bass man extraordinaire Willie Dixon becomes the Chess A & R man, and these Blues? They wail, Man, they wail!Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy, Howlin', Etta, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy!!!! When the Buddy Guy track comes on, you notice how much smoother the recording technology, hence, the Blues itself, becomes. A Little Milton cut has sessionmen Charles Stepney on piano and Maurice White on drums. Etta James house rocks a live audience in Nashville. Willie gives a tune to KoKo Taylor. And Hooker does the Last Call...will you love this? Do you have to ask?

4-0 out of 5 stars Great music
Like its companion volume, "Chess Blues Classics 1947-1956", this CD offers some of the best tracks by some of the best blues musicians of Chicago's famed Chess label.

As this is written there are four teen beat compilations. If you love Rock and Roll MUSIC, not the phony rip off junk of today, butreal music, then you must have these discs.5-0 out of 5 stars Instrumental Heaven
This is an incredibly eclectic collection of instrumental hits (and non-hits) released between 1957 and 1964.If you're in the mood for guitar solos only, or surf music only, or organ music only, then you're out ofluck here--it's all mixed together! And I can't stop listening to it! Youwant to hear the Champs do "Tequila?"OK, it comes right afterthe Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and chorus doing "So Rare," whichfollows jazz-great Cozy Cole's awesome but really hard to find "TopsyPart II."This 30-cut essential CD finishes with a couple of LonnieMack tunes that prove he is one the R & B guitar masters of this or anyera. If you like this CD, go ahead and get Volumes 2 through 4.All ofthem contain a really smart mix of familiar tunes and stuff you've neverheard before. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No One Gets Outta Here Without Singin' The Blues!
Whether you love the blues or don't even know how to spell it, THE GREAT TOMATO BLUES PACKAGE is a must for any music collection! Muddy Waters! Leadbelly! John Lee Hooker! Howlin' Wolf! "Big Mama" Thornton! They're all here, along with many more! My only complaint is that each artist does only one song. I could have listened to a four disc set! Buy it immediately...

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good pick!
This is an excellent "beginners" blues album, lots of variety, has a good scope, from very early Mississippi Delta blues to more contemporary artists, so that the listener can see how the blues style changes, yet always remains the same. ... Read more

This is one awesome soundtrack consisting of nothing but top notch blues. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl by Junior Wells, Born Under A Bad Sign by Albert King, Red House by Buddy Guy, and I Ain't Gonna Suffer No More by John Lee Hooker are some good examples. Other artists include Kenny Neal, Aretha Franklin, C.C. Adcock, The Hoax, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Walter "Shakey" Horton and two cuts by BB King. Strong stuff, and Thank God there are no covers by Alec Baldwin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for harp players
This cd is essential for all acoustic harp players, and even for electric harp players. These are the dudes that influenced Sonny Boy Willaimson II, Junior Wells, Little Walter, Big Walter, Kid Thomas, and other great electric blues harp players from the 50's on.This cd concentrates on the 20's and 30's, which is essentially the pre war blues period. Not all the songs are strictly blues there's some hillbilly, and jug style tunes too. However the main stars here are the harp players, and thier amazing solos.Jaybird Coleman might very well be the most well known of the harp players here, but they are all great and so is the sound quality.I am a harp player myself, and I recomend this to all harp players as well as anything by the logn forgotten Harmonica Fats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Harmonicists
This is a very good collection of prewar (WW2, that is) harmonica blues. "The Train" was once essential for anyone who was serious about learning the harmonica, and Freeman Stowers gives a classic example of this in "Railroad Blues." Chuck Darling's "Blowing the Blues" is a rather sweet and whimsicla little tune that is no less enjoyable than it would have been back in 1930 when it was first released. Excellent Harp-guitar interplay. Jaybird Coleman, known today only to harcore blues fans, gets a few licks in. But the real treat for harmonicists is the legendary DeFord Bailey, who was probably the first harmonicist who was a bonafide recording star (via his appearances on the Grand Ole Opry). His "Davidson County Blues" (from 1928) shows the standard that was set for the likes of the Sonny Boy Williamsons, Stevie Wonder, Little Walter Jacobs, and all that were to follow. In either case, if you think you're hot stuff with the harmonica, listen to these masters and go back to your room and practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Harmonica Blues: the Original Masters
This is a "must-have" CD for those interested in early harmonica technique. It begins with a mind-blowing harmonica "train" by Freeman Stowers. This is unlike anything commonly found on post-war recordings. What follows is a wide-ranging sampling of virtuostic harmonica playing by artists both obscure, Chuck Darling, and famous, De Ford Bailey. This CD highlights harmonica techniques might otherwise have been lost. This would make a fine addition to the collection of any serious blues harmonica player. ... Read more

Not only was the late La Melle Prince (Decca Recording Artist 1969) a songstress and an international performer, she was also a songwritre as well, of which, her writing skills are portrayed here on (track #7) "Get High." Overall, this CD compilation is a jewel to have in your collection, especially if you love 1940's style jump blues music; as well as, big band jazz & blues and country music too...

2-0 out of 5 stars Instrumental pot-pourri mixes too many flavors
Presumably Blind Pig has more instrumental material in its catalog than what it presents here, and it might have been better to issue a couple of blues instrumental albums each with two or three tracks from each artist rather than this hodgepodge with its jarring transitions, for example from Charlie Musselwhite to Deanna Bogart, or from Chubby Carrier to Magic Slim. The recording quality varies widely. As for truth in advertising, the CD isn't as bare as it claims; the very first song includes a vocal chorus. These defects are almost compensated for by the cover photography, however, which one hopes will be to a new generation what "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" was to mine. ... Read more
