I own a lot of blues music by single artists and probably a couple of dozen by various artists and this is the one I find myself going back to most often. PURE BLUES is such a great mixture of just what the title says, pure blues.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite!
I have seven different blues piano cd's and this one is my absolute favorite. It is difficult to find blues piano anything. Today I visited six different music stores and did not find a single blues piano collection. The older blues collections are mainly a little bit of piano backup with a few flourishes. This cd however, is dedicated to piano solo's that really rock. Maybe I prefer the contemporary but either way this cd is awesome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Collection of Early Blues
JSP Records has assembled a nice collection of early blues [1935 and on]from three super musicians, Gabriel Brown, Dan Pickett and Ralph Willis. Great guitar playing and super slide work along with some really fine vocals.Recording transfers are very good to the CD format and remastering brings the sound out quite well. This set is a good addition to real blues collections from the period of mid-1900's.Also check out 'Big Joe Williams and the Stars of the Mississippi Blues', 'Texas Blues', and 'Broke, Black and Blue' collections. This stuff is the real deal.No "white-boy" blues fooling around here, just real down to earth, raw and real music from the heart and soul. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Many gems and discoveries, but often more archival
Vol 1.5 stars.Champion Jack Dupree, Professor Longhair, Archibald.Nice sampler of New Orleans (NO) piano styles that make it easy to understand where Fats Domino came from.Mainly piano, male vocal with drums distinctly in the back. Many include a sax or guitar as well.Styles draw heavily on boogie-woogie at the core and add distinctive syncopation and lilt that instantly signal NO.Mambos offer an extreme version of squinky NO rhythms.Several reach into cha-cha and ska territory. At the other end, blues and R&B provide the foundation.Professor Longhair's style is crisp, clean, creative, quintessential to NO.Archibald is simpler, more traditionally down-home R&B.Archibald has a fuller ensemble than Longhair or Dupree.[78:56] Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Blues people re-do Dylan with entertaining results
Bob Dylan started off the sixties with a lot of pretty sanctimonious, self-righteous, change the world stuff like, "Blowin in the Wind" and "Masters of War". Plain folk music in the Woody Guthrie style, "a red guitar, three chords and the Truth".
3-0 out of 5 stars great idea -
but not a great album.I feel as the other reviewers did, that a few good songs can't save this bland collection.I mean, this is a classic album, so it would take some pretty terrific music to do it justice. It isn't here. The track I really liked, though, was Walter Trout's "Leopard-skin Pill-box Hat." I think he captured the rollicking leer of the original very well. Overall: stick with Bob's version.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly standard collection of covers
This is a CD with noble intentions, but that for the most part fails to capture the magic of Blonde on Blonde. Most of the tracks are by-the-book covers of the Dylan songs, not much to grab one's attention. The second half is somewhat better, but still not terribly inspired. The only real high praise I can give out is for Clarence Bucaro (a woman), whose version of One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later) is the only real standout on the disc. She is the only one who actually *did* something with the song, rather than just regurgitating it. Overall, an enjoyable collection for a real Dylan fan, but not much new. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Slowhands payback to the blues meisters
Eric Clapton built his career on a catalog of licks borrowed from the blues masters of the past. This album gives an assortment of Chicago blues artists a chance to pay homage to Eric, and his elder predecessors.Carl Weathersby contributes his famous rendition of "Lay Down Sally", and Ann Peebles' sorrowful version of "Tears in Heaven" will bring a mist to the eyes of even the most hardened blues critics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not A Tribute, But A Celebration -- And A Very Fun One
As it proclaims on the cover, "This ain't no tribute," and it ain't. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Clapton purists, and blues purists, will probably reject this with disdain. If so, they're missing out on a great CD. You're basic "tribute" album has lesser known artists doing note for note, unoriginal covers of a famous artist's work. Here, Blues legends (like Koko Taylor, Otis Clay, Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley, James Cotton, Otis Rush, and Pinetop Perkins), along with up and coming blues artists, celebrate Clapton's legacy by putting their own, special stamp on his songs. Bo Diddley's take on "Before You Accuse Me" (which is, of course, a cover of a Clapton song which itself was a cover of a Bo Diddley song), alone makes this CD worth buying. Other highlights include Koko Taylor's rendition of "Blues Power," Buddy Guy's take on "Stange Brew," and Eric Gales' surpsingly good cover of "Layla" (yes, "Layla"). There are a few throw-aways, and a little too much influence of the Blues Brothers (which seems to permeate everything put out by "House of Blues"), but in general it's very much worth the price of admission.Don't miss it.

Editorial Review

This third volume in Rounder Records' ongoing classic-train-song series focuses on the R&B end of the rails. Its scope is perhaps a little too ambitious, since the selections here span nearly 70 years. Amid some pretty timeless competition, 1990s entries from the Holmes Brothers and Linda Tillery sound even more flatly digital (and surprisingly inanimate, given the subject matter) than they might otherwise. But classics like Louis Jordan's "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie" and Little Junior Parker's original recording of "Mystery Train"--which predates Elvis Presley's earth-shattering cover by a full year--give this volume a propulsive swagger that previous bluegrass- and country-centric volumes in the series lack. 5-0 out of 5 stars HELP PLEASE!
This is not a review but I am desperate and need help. This is driving me crazy...Years ago my Grandmother used to sing many of the old railroad songs. One of my favorites was The Wreck Of The Old 97. She used to sing another one, but I cannot remember many of the words, therfore I cannot find it ANYWHERE! I am getting desperate trying to find it someplace on line. The song/story is about a conductor driving down the railroad tracks, and when he passes by his house, if his baby is sick (or something like that) the light on the track (or house) will be red. If the baby is OK, the light will be green.I know I did not imagine this song, but I just cannot remember the words. Does anyone have a clue?? I sure hope you can help!5-0 out of 5 stars African Americans sing about trains
Many compilations of train songs, including others in this series by Rounder, focus on country and folk music, but this set shows that people sang about trains regardless of musical genre or their own ethnic origin. So this set covers blues, jazz, boogie-woogie, R+B, soul and gospel.5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for help finding words to an old train song.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Yazoo masterpiece!
This is not your usual blues cd.These aren't the typical blues artists you have heard about in books or television. Some of the guys only did 1 or 2 records, but they are KILLER!If you want a great introduction to the lesser known blues masters this is it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of lesser-known Mississippi bluesfolk
If you feel like you've exhausted all the Delta and Mississippi blues from Patton to B.B., listen to this. This disc contains many of the only recordings by obscure, but no less talented, artists of early country acoustic blues. You may have heard Geechie Wiley's "Last Kind Word Blues" on the film *Crumb.* If you saw the film, the song has probably haunted you ever since. Worth buying for that track alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
Compared to the giants of delta like Charley Patton and Robert Johnson, the artists on this album are relatively obscure, but it is due more than anything of the random aspect of the destiny. With have Garfield Akers recorded as many sides as Chambre of wire (which did not record many commercial discs of pre-war period, but which appreciated a modicum fame during the rebirth the blue ones of years ' 60), it would have the respect which it deserves (I think it is better a guitarist than the Room). The same ones can be known as of any of the artists on here (not to mention many artists for the past several thousand years, but to think of that inserts too much). The inclusion of 6 ways above here by women cannot seem substantial, but it rather quickly becomes clear that the women were of importance equal for the men in the respect to blue of Mississippi (and, heu, of you know, the life and the basic rights and very which), and they more amply had been recorded, they would be regarded just as powerful of a musical force. Why the hell didn't record the value of hours of the airs of Geechie Wiley when they had the chance? How could they take it for granted? It is tragic, if you find this kind of tragic thing. If Wiley had just recorded a LP' S-value of material, it would be considered more significant than the evil of John, as single as the jump James, perhaps even while significant like Charley Patton. Ouais, I said it. I do not exaggerate. Unfortunately, it left only one handle on sides (the most included here) for the posterity, if the posterity exists in its case. The guitar playing and singing here is brilliant through and through, and the noise of these 78s is excellent (except, unfortunately, blue head of work "without mother of Elvie Thomas of child," which has the heavy external noise). The notes of covering are excellent, certain better notes of covering for an album of Yazoo. If you stumbled in this page for any reason, and clearly you have, you must buy this CD that you will not regret it. But if you regret it, do not carry not felt sorry for to me about it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Listen to the clips once, think twice
I wish anybody had mentioned this about this album before I bought it, so I'm telling you: this edition has been post-processed with a reverb that surely wasn't there when Lomax recorded it. Sometimes it's not especially intrusive, but sometimes it's aggressively metallic and artifical. Serves me right for trying to cheap out, and failing to listen to the clips. If this bugs you as it does me, do yourself what I'm going to do next time, buy the Rounder edition of "Prison Songs (Historical Recordings From Parchman Farm 1947-48)".

This is an excellent recording with almost no context. The liner notes (all of two paragraphs) don't say anything about when the songs were recorded of how Lomax got access to the prisoners. The sound is excellent. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of hits, lots of misses
This is a so-so collection of blues recordings.A few are great, with artists like Muddy Waters, T-bone Walker, and John Lee Hooker contributing some classics. But there are a few songs that were made famous by the Rolling Stones, and they sound ridiculous played in a blues style.Bottom line: this is worth getting, but only if you can get it cheap, and you're willing to sift through some duds to get to the good ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great mix of new and old blues recordings
The House of Blues label has done it again with another incredible collection of blues essentials. From classics must-haves by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and John Lee Hooker to more recent recordings by TajMahal and Luther Allison, this collection is calling to you.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This is not the blues
Yes, these are great ladies but they are not singing the Blues. They are singing Jazz. As far as a Jazz album goes, I rate this 5 STARS. 5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Into It
For someone who has always liked the blues, but doesn't quite know why, this CD helps make it clear. It's because of the way it makes you FEEL.The sultry, beautiful release it gives you, with all the female greats (plus Louis!), makes cooking, gardening, even paying bills a treat.Your hips will sway. You will bellow out along with them.Go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing
Morgana King's "I Know How It Feels To Be Lonely" alone is worth the price of this brilliant CD.This collection possesses an etheral quaility that presents Blues at its quintessential best.Sara Vaughn andNina Simone also shine like bright and radiant stars. ... Read more
