4-0 out of 5 stars Not a meltdown but still impressive
What we have here is a melding of old and new and that's not all bad contrary to the previous review. Mark Hummel is the guiding force and is one of the best in the biz for West Coast harping. Also helping out is Muddy Waters' former drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith who started out on harp.

Editorial Review

Anyone looking for versions of the great bluesman Charley Patton's timeless songs need go no further than Patton's original recordings. Patton is considered the first Delta Blues master, and hearing pub rocker Graham Parker deliver his take on "Poor Me" does no favors to either Patton or Parker. Stick to the originals or Howling Wolf's various Patton covers. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Play it again, Sam
I can't even remember why I bought this, but I am glad I forgot. It's really quite beautiful. I must admit I don't know Patton's music back ward and forward but this is moving, interesting, and, ( is this damning with faint praise?) PLEASANT to listen to. Good for anytime, anyplace, I say. Parker's cover is arresting. Lots of subtlety and terrific musicianship on this CD. More than worth a risk. Did I mention sexy and scary?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great interpretations
This is one of those rare tribute albums that's so good you buy a bunch more tribute albums trying to find one just like it.The originals are pretty tough listening with notoriously bad sound quality.Great stuff, but not for regular listening. This album moves the songs out of history and into the present and it sounds great with some very interesting tracks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Found it to be a really enjoyable cd
I agree the Graham Parker performance is great but so is Snooky Pryor's track which is my favorite. Just behind that are the great acoustic performances by Charlie Musselwhite and Joe Louis Walker. There are surprise interpretations on the album that i found delightful. I've been very pleased by this project and was amazed to see the bad revue below. Since it was too negative, i thought I'd post my views. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificent album.
As a person who is a huge fan of Dylan's songs but really dislikes his vocals, I have searched long and hard for a tribute album that I liked.Ironically, I found it in this "ain't no tribute" album. These are GREAT interpretations of the songs of Dylan. My only complaint was that there weren't more songs; a two-CD set would have been sweet.Otherwise, great.

5-0 out of 5 stars diverse, interesting and soulful
this compilation has almost no weak spots.every tune is unique and surprising.. I especially liked the rendition of "Lay Lady Lay"It is haunting and seductive.I can't help but think that if Dylan everlistens to this disk, he'd like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an outstanding compilation of Bob Dylan's music.
This is a CD that I will listen to for a long time.Just as you're listening to the end of one song and regretting that it's over, another starts filling the room and you're filled with joy at the prospect of 3 or 4 minutes more of outstanding sound, sound you can see and feel. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good idea, but...
Good idea, but probably editor's wish did not come true, because in this record you can find both strong and weak points. Some of the tracks, for example, are really outstanding. "All down the line" is a powerful rock'n'roll, with a brilliant rythm guitar work; Jeff Lang's "Sweet Virginia" is probably the highlight of this recording, with an impressive sample of slide and fingerstyle acoustic guitar, which brings back Delta's echoes (a little masterpiece); a nice "Tumbling Dice", with southern rock calls and an incisive version of "Rocks Off", with a pure r'n'r solo in the final, complete the mentions. As for the rest, to be honest, the CD is quite modest and my three stars mark is the result of a balance.
1-0 out of 5 stars Atrocious.
I suppose I should preface this by saying that I'm not, as a rule, a fan of the "music" that's categorized as the blues in these modern times. It sounds like white trash pseudo-country music to me.5-0 out of 5 stars A great tribute to the Stones
Exile on Main St. is my favorite Stones album of all time and when I found out there was a blues tribute to it, I seached for this album till I found it. The Stones have never strayed very far from their blues roots, and on this album we have some of the best in blues music today adding their spin to some classic songs. I am a fan of Tommy Castro and I just love playing his cover of RIP THIS JOINT as loud as I can. He really kicks ass on this cover.Jeff Lang does a truly amazing version ofSWEET VIRGINIA, it is another highlight of this disc. Christine Ohlmanversion of ALL DOWN THE LINE would make Mick and Keith proud.I could go on and on with how I think the musicians did a great album here. How could you go wrong with Double Touble being the backing band for all the tracks. One voice that really sounds good is Andrea Re doing a version of TUMBLING DICE. I dont to much about her, but I am looking forward to finding out more.If you are looking for goods songs sung be great voices this is an album to add to your collection. It is some of the best blues being played today ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Shining Addition to Any Collection
The consolidation of record companies is generally bad, but this 3-CD box set was only possible because MCA acquired the rights to some outstanding early "race" record labels (Vocalion, Decca) and classy early R&B (e.g. Chess). The result is an intelligent, sequenced collection that is much more than a jarring, random assortment of songs by blues masters. Starting with the Delta blues, the mix seems subtly slanted in favor of bawdy, roadhouse-style blues performances--why it's the devil's music and you can't stay away from it. Whether it's Peetie Wheatstraw, Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker or Etta James, these performances will seduce you. Good quality sound throughout (even the old stuff), with a handsome booklet.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent blues collection
I own tons of blues CD's and records but I find myself going back to this collection over and over again. The songs represent some of the strongest recordings by the masters of the blues.Whether your interest is delta blues, piano blues, jump blues, Chicago blues or smooth urban blues; you'll find plenty to peak your ear.If you're lucky as I was, you'll find some unfamiliar and great artists to lead you down new musical roads. Some of my personal favorites are: That's No Way to Get Along - Robert Wilkins, What's the Matter with the Mill? - Kansas Joe McCoy, Floating Bridge - Sleepy John Estes, Mother Earth - Memphis Slim, It Serves You Right to Suffer - John Lee Hooker- just to name a few.Since I've got a 1,000 word limit in this review it prevents me from listing every great track on the collection and all the reasons you should purchase it. Suffice to say, buy it now and you won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Collection of Classic Blues!
I have purchased a lot of Blues recordings recently, but for a single purchase, this collection would be the best. It has the one or two most recognized songs from the most prominent Blues artists from 1927 to 1969,without the "scratches" of the old '78's!!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

This trove of 23 recordings matches its superb companion cut for cut. Each selection illustrates the jug genre's richness and diversity of style as well as racial and regional character, with bands' origins ranging from New York and Ohio through Kentucky and Tennessee on down to Alabama. Included are such flapper-age funk classics as Cannon's Jug Stompers' "Bring It with You When You Come"; the Memphis Jug Band's "Stealin' Stealin,'" "You May Leave but This Will Bring You Back," and "The Old Folks Started It" (with stirring vocals by Minnie Wallace); and Noah Lewis' Jug Band's "Selling the Jelly." Lurking in the collection's multicolored depths are discoveries such as "Brown Jug Blues" by Ezra Buzzington's Rustic Revelers and "What Makes My Baby Cry" by the Five Harmaniacs, a white vaudeville act from Brooklyn. Also notable is Mississippi Sarah blowing jug behind Daddy Stovepipe on "Greenville Strut," guaranteed to move the human butt. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sampler of jug band music
I'm not exactly sure what drew me to this wonderful album, but am I glad I found it!Harvey Pekar had mentioned his interest in old jug band recordings from the 1920s and 30s a few times, and so when I saw this compilation, I immediately picked it up.I suppose the bizarre cover photo was also an attraction. If you're familiar with the music of R. Crumb & His Cheap Suit Seranaders or if you own the soundtracks to any of Terry Zweigoff's movies, you have some idea what to expect. This is as joyful and soulful as music gets.I wish this kind of music were in style today!5-0 out of 5 stars Call me Jughead
This album is ridiculously cool and great. Generically, the songs are all over the map: equal parts jazz and hillbilly music. Jug bands were the missing link between urban pop and rural folk forms. Who knew? You're missing out if you don't have this CD. ... Read more

There is a lot of good stuff on this set and the booklet is great. That said, I knocked off one star because I was a little disappointed with this when compared to the Robert Nighthawk cuts that form his "Live On Maxwell St.-1964" CD.That one is an absolute masterpiece. This one is not nearly as consistant.Sometimes less IS more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent cd in a terrific series... Secret History Of R&R!
The entire series is exellent, and it features great and well known blues artists as well as obscure and forgotten ones, who either influenced rock'n'rollers of another generation, or performed songs that rock'n'rollers covered in the 60's onward. These recordings are generally from the 20's all the way to just before WWII. I bought the Shoebox Full of Blues which contains this disc, and the selection and quality is first rate. There isn't a bad track on the disc, and the mastering is superb. These may be the highest quality versions of these classics you'll hear. Blues purists may argue that vinyl is the only "true" way to listen to these, but who among us has pristine vinyl and the equipment to do it justice?
5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is awesome!
I have had this C.D. for at least 6 years and it is still one of my favorites.I also happen to like the introductions that the other reviewer found annoying...it makes me feel like I am at the show. I bought my CD at the House of Blues in New Orleans and it brings back great memories of my trip.Several of my friends have heard the CD and wanted to buy it.

2-0 out of 5 stars inane prattle has me crying the blues
While the music here is solid and the packaging first rate, the incredibly annoying voiceover to announce which artist is up next interupts the music's flow and is enough to make one hit the eject button. And that's after the first listen. Trying to get through it again and again is next to impossible. To add insult to injury, because the VO is tacked onto the back of the tracks, RIPing the disc and removing the offending noise isn't a workaround unless you want to start editing audio files.Read more
