4-0 out of 5 stars metaphors don't get much thinner than "i want a piece of your custard pie"
the only thing that keeps me from giving this five stars is the lack of howling wolf songs on here... "no place to go" (sometimes called "you gonna wreck my life") comes to mind first.but it's a great transition cd:i let friends borrow it who are kinda hesitant to get into blues but already love zeppelin.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Not What You Think!
First of all do not get the impression that this is a remake of Zeppelin tunes. This is the raw source from where Jimmy and the boys had cut their teeth on.If you are a stanch blues fan like I am, you will appreciate this disk for what it represents. If not, then you will find no use for it.I personally like knowing what inspired certain artists and enjoyed this copulation. If you weren't a blues fan before, it will introduce you to a new (old) area of music field that is very entertaining and satisfying, compared to the norm.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blues 101!!!
All right, students, now pay attention! Put down that racing form and pay attention right now! This here Chess Blues box set contains exactly 101 tracks. How appropriate! That makes this collection a sort of unofficial college course entitled Blues 101, and Professors Wolf, Waters, James, and Jacobs (Little Walter), etc., etc., will be your blues instructors. You will learn the Fundamentals of Blues Harp, with Little Walter ("Juke") and Sonny Boy Williamson II ("Don't Start Me to Talkin'") as your master teachers. Over here, we have a course entitled Mellow Blues, with Willie Dixon ("Walkin' the Blues") and Jimmy Witherspoon ("Ain't Nobody's Business") showing you how it's done. Then, we have instruction in Blues and the Female Voice, with Koko Taylor ("What Kind of Man Is That," "Wang Dang Doodle") and Etta James ("Somethings Got A Hold Of Me," "I'd Rather Go Blind") as your teachers. Finally, what great university would be complete without Master Classes and the best professors in the business Muddy Waters ("Got My Mojo Workin'," "I Can't Be Satisfied," "My Eyes (Keep Me in Trouble"), Howlin Wolf ("Killin' Floor," "Evil," "Going Down Slow"), and John Lee Hooker ("Walkin' the Boogie," "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer") holding court for your edification. No, there is no blues university, but if there was one, the above masters would surely be the instructors and Chess Blues would certainly be the required text. As I said, it's packed with an amazing 101 songs, many of the best blues tracks ever recorded. There are a few clunkers, but very few. You will spend many enjoyable hours listening to this collection. (Trust me, it takes a few hours to listen to 101 songs once!) Get it today, and enroll in the best blues education money can buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A terriffic addition to your blues collection
This handsome boxset, complete with a large booklet, is a superb addition to your blues collection, even if you already have the best of the major Chess artists such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson II.5-0 out of 5 stars This is it!
The Delta gave birth to the Delta Blues and Chicago gave birth to the Chicago Blues but it would not have happened without Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and, of course, the Chess Brothers. This is their legacy - no true blues fan would be without this set as part of their collection -enough said! ... Editorial Review

Buddy Guy's greatest album is also his debut full-length session as a leader. "One Room Country Shack," "Mary Had a Little Lamb" (a Stevie Ray Vaughan favorite), "Sweet Little Angel," and "Worry, Worry" are defining songs, full of high-wire vocal dynamics and guitar work of almost balletic poise. The tone of Guy's 1957 Fender six-string remains the benchmark for nearly every blues player who's since hefted a Stratocaster. This CD is as tasteful and dramatic as Guy's 1990s performances are brash and assaultive. Producer Samuel Charters, the noted blues historian, caught Guy just as he was emerging from the shadow of B.B. King and Muddy Waters, and provided an excellent cast of supporting musicians, including the underrated guitar genius Wayne Bennett, gritty piano virtuoso Otis Spann, and Muddy's redoubtable drummer Fred Below. The results are blues perfection. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to your soul
I've been listening to Buddy Guy play the blues for thirty years.I've seen him in concert 6-8 times.I think he is the most talented blues guitarist, bar none, that there is.I laughed when I compared his recording of "Five Long Years" with Eric Clapton. This album is one of the first I listened to and is still one of my favorites."One Room Country Shack" is what the blues are all about. He finds notes on the guitar that aren't there and his plainitve voice singing " why don't you make connection with me, give me some kind of good deal" grabs you by the soul and don't let go.He also does uptempo on "Money" and makes a pop song the blues. If you don't love this album quit listening to the blues, you don't get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars probably Guy's best solo effort
I was shocked to find that Buddy Guy's "A Man and the Blues," only had a handful of reviews. This is an essential recording that should be in any Blues collection. First, the guitar work is powerful. Guy's Fender Strat plays clean, thin and nimble lead work. Second, the vocals are compelling. Buddy Guy's voice was strongest during his early career. Here, his voice is high pitched, clean and full of soul. Third, the song choice is tops. There are no weak songs on "A Man and the Blues." 'One Room Country Shack' could be a definitive statement of what the Blues is all about. Many of the fast blues tunes like 'I Can't Quit The Blues' 'Money' and 'Mary Had A Little Lamb' are three minute parties. The brass brings so much to the danceable feel-good grooves. The disc has a beautiful retelling of the standard 'Sweet Little Angel.' The only drawback to this 1967 recording is the length -it's too short. It all comes down to guitar work, vocals and song choice. For these three reasons, Buddy Guy's first was probably his best solo effort and it should be in your Blues collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars defines electric blues
this album is very very very special. you can feel that magic throughout the album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now IGet it
A long time ago a friend whose music taste I trust told me he had just seen an incredible performance at the Fillmore in NY by " a blues guy named Albert King." I bought all the available albums and didn't get it. Thislive recording captures what I have been hoping for. There is no more powerful performance than Albert's " I'LL Play the Blues For You". "Killing FLoor" does it too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blues at Sunset
One of the best live recordings of Albert King. Even without the usual horn section on the Wattatax set, it lacks nothing. The rest of the Montreaux set not included on the "Blues At Sunrise" CD are found here and are, again, some of Albert Kings best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter!
This CD isn't the best anything. It's just a good starter cd for the new Blues listener, and a good listen for the more experienced. So I'll rate it a good. It probably deserves three stars but I'm a sucker for slide guitar so I gave it four.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good sampler
This is another fine entry in Rhino's lengthy Blues Masters series. It isn't the definitive word on slide guitar blues, of course, or on any of the artists represented, but as a sampler it works very well, featuring a lesser-known (but very good) rendition of "Dust My Broom" by Elmore James, and well-chosen cuts by Muddy Waters, J.B. Hutto (the tough boogie "Too Much Alcohol"), and Robert Nighthawk (a superb medley of two of his best songs, "Anna Lee" and "Sweet Black Angel").
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This is must buy for any fan slide guitar. From beginning to end, fromElmore James to Johnny Winter, it's non-stop blues. You'll find yourself hitting the repeat button on the CD player, so you can hear the great bluesslide guitar again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Not To Like?
I bought this CD primarily, because I don't own any other Freddie King CD's, had decided to try him out and this was the only one available at my local record store.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I absolutely love this album. Track after track King proves himself to be a blues guitar giant who had much influence over the next generation of guitarists. One important factor that makes many of these songs as good as they are is that King's voice is marvelous and does a great job of supplementing his guitar work. His guitar phrases are beautifully done. King's sound is really nice- it's almost a tight sound, and very invigorating. I love ninety percent of the tracks on this album, it's one of those albums where each song really is great, track after track. I highly recommend this album.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly for completists
Freddy/Freddie King's recordings for Shelter Records were amply documented on the 1995 double-CD King of the Blues, which had everything from all three of his Shelter albums. But since the output from King's Shelter years were rather inferior when compared to his earlier material, that is just too much for all but the most ardent fans.

Editorial Review

The blues world lost a treasure when Luther Allison died in 1997, just as he was finally garnering the recognition he so richly deserved. If there's any question of that, this live album, recorded at the 1995 Chicago Blues Festival and at Buddy Guy's Legends, will dispel any such notion. A performer and songwriter of the first order, Allison had the sort of mastery of his instrument that comes from long experience; whether rolling off licks on the "Gambler's Blues/Sweet Little Angel" medley, or playing extended solos on "All the King's Horses," Allison's on the ball and in control at all times. This album contains mostly newer material previously recorded for Alligator Records, like "Soul Fixin' Man," "Bad Love," "All the King's Horses," and "What Have I Done Wrong?" Overall, this is an excellent memorial to a musician who should be remembered. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Blues Album From Late Guitar Slinger Luther Allison
Luther Allison died just as he was on the verge of gaining the recognition in America that he so greatly wanted and richly deserved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blues Star Makes His Own Way Foreign and Comes Home To the States for a Huge Comback Like We've Never Seen!
Picture this:a blues musician that started out emulating BB King's licks eventually takes over Freddy King's band in Chicago at the peak of when blues are hot!He then goes on to become the only blues musician to record for Motown (at the same time Marvin Gaye is laying down hits!)and not only that his Motown album becomes the highest sold from an unknown's first album ever.To juice up the story a bit more let us say he is the only guitarist that can effectively have a full conversation with his guitar and to in 1960 break the sound barrier with later day Mariah Carey screams!Too good to be true?
5-0 out of 5 stars Luther Is The Man
This Live Blues set from 1995 shortly before his death is a classic. Luther's guitar style has several sounds. His Chicago Blues style with lots of horns, to his party band sound, as well as several slide sets, this is a very impressive album. His 'Gimme Back My Wig' is a slide extravaganta. My favorite, 'All The King's Horses' is a searing, blistering nearly 12 minute version that leaves you panting for more. We will enjoy this one for years to come. This set is truly a masterpiece. ... Very few artists have attempted--or succeeded in--improving thestandard template for classic blues records set some 40 years ago in the golden age of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Perhaps R.L Burnside's recent heavily produced work on Fat Possum Records has come closest to adding an original slant.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for me, but...
This is going to be a strange review.Being from Chicago and have had the pleasure and opportunity of meeting Buddy a few times, I was very excited for this release.I've really tried to get into this disc, but I just can't ... it's just not for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars bitter never sounded so sweet
i chose to review this , not because im a big buddy guy fan , but because im a fan of this album.it has one of the best sounds ive ever heard on a blues album. words like Raw, Spacious,Haunting,Uneasy,Tense, and definitelyDarkcome to mind.its a very humid, sweaty sound , kinda like sitting outdoors on some hot summer evening down south, looking out over the swaying cattails and swarms of mosquitoes. alongside Buddys heavily distorted strat bending , you can hear the bullfrogs, gators, owls, and all the other tenants of the dank bustling swamps in head nodding agreement.not literally of course , but theyre there in spirit, Buddy himself sounding plaintive and wise , like some grizzled old bird dog in his latter years. i mean that in the best possible way , i prefer this to his older stuff by far , even though these are all( but 1 ) covers, of the mississippi hill countrys better known blues artists, mainly Junior Kimbrough, but Buddy puts his reverant stamp on these songs ,making them his own, the way Jimi Hendrix did to'Watchtower','Hey Joe' etc. its one of my favorites , i definitely recommend it if youre into guitar playing, and if youre fed up with some of the more slick watered down blues thats polluted the scene the last few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars burning sexual blues
The fact that this album gets such mixed reviews proves that Mr. Guy effectively pre-eulogized a style of blues (Northern Mississipi) that is sadly dying with the rural culture and raw lifestyle from which it was born.Sex, food and alcohol relieved oppression and hard labour in that area in those times and music to dance to at juke-joints was the embodiment and freedom of that life.To see the likes of T-Model Ford in his 80's getting lascivious embraces from young female audience members at recent shows proves the essense of the music and the feelings which create it.Buddy Guy is still vigorous for his age and starting the album with the "old man" song; then breaking into some of his heaviest playing ever over a militia drum-beat proves his point. This work is a masterful homage to the true roots of blues music and should be seen for what it really is...burning sexual blues from a very human, non-corporate era, when people enjoyed (or did not) each other; not things. ... Editorial Review

If you think the slide guitar blues of Elmore James is as loud and ragged as music can be, then you've never heard Hound Dog Taylor. Born Theodore Roosevelt Taylor in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1915, he didn't pick up the guitar until he was 20, and was instantly smitten by the rawboned sound players like James got by slipping a slide across the strings of an electric guitar. The raw, boogie style of his trio (with Brewer Phillips on second guitar and Ted Harvey on drums) was nurtured over endless nights in Chicago blues clubs. Sometimes, Phillips plays a single-note lead guitar that suggests Buddy Guy on a bender. More often, the trio slams out a boogie beat that is topped by Taylor's slide guitar, an electrified whine that's about as subtle as a broken bottle on a tavern floor. This 1971 album was the first release by Alligator Records, which went on to become a major independent label specializing in contemporary blues. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential work for anyone that rocks
This is the pivotal work for all rock and blues fans. It cannot get any more raw. For all you Black Keys, White Stripes, etc fans, this is what the bands aspire to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'm from Chicago; virtuosos need not apply
You don't have to be a Chicagoan to love Chicago blues. And it doesn't get more raw, low-down, gut-bucket, razor totin' South Side blues than the Dog!
3-0 out of 5 stars The Real Thing
I saw him once, he had a cheap Sears guitar with strings way off the board, which I guess was good for slide. One of the best shows I ever saw. This album gives you a taste of that energy, but it's not like seeing him live.Worth a listen, though. "I held my baby last night" kicks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Twelve Fingers Workin' Six Strings
Hound Dog Taylor was born polydactyly - he had six fingers on both hands. One night in a drunken impulse, he cut off the extra digit on his strumming hand with a razor blade while leaving his fretboard hand with all six.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dirty
All I gotta say is this is some of the most gritty, raw, rockin' boogie blues I've ever heard. The guitars on this album are loud, dirty, nasty -- where can I get this tone? You can't buy it. Well, you can if you buy this album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oh my goodness...
I can't tell you how strongly I feel about this album. This is awesome! This is one of the more outstanding examples of the "boogie" blues style. 1-0 out of 5 stars F for sound
Well this is a total F for sound. I have 3 dif 3 cd players, home, port, and car, and yes they are good ones, car is a Q45 with a Bose. I bought this CD because of the reviews I read here, what is everyone smoking? or is there not that good of stuff avail from Albert? I don't own any other CD's, but I do know about him from the SRV Sessions VHS I have had for a few years, and it sounds pretty good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome live blues guitar
Albert was at his best live...This is awesome guitar playing and Albert's singing is awesome as well. One listen to this and one realizes that Albert King is truly THE master of the blues guitar. ALL songs are excellent! "Don't throw your love on me so strong" is the VERY BEST BLUES GUITAR PLAYING I've ever heard and that includes SRV, Hendrix and the rest of King's followers. He was the BEST!!! Thursday Night and Live Wire/Blues Power are also MUSTS!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hot Blues!
Albert King recorded this CD on Wednesday June 26, 1968, one day prior to his more popular and better known release, "Thursday Night In San Francisco".This disc represents the first day that Albert performed at the Filmore as the headliner.Prior to that time, he had appeared as the opener for Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Albert's "best" performance that evening, as well as the next day, (according to Stax anyway) was originally released by Stax on the "Live Wire/Blues Power" CD.The songs contained on both, the Wednesday and the Thursday CD were thought to be a cut below and were not included.Fortunately for us, Stax took another look at the material, albeit 22 years later, and released the remainder of the material as it occurred on two separate discs. In order to gain a full understanding as to what occurred on those two nights, King fans should purchase all three of these excellent recordings. As with the other two discs, King's performance is outstanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars E G Kight
I'm giving this a five star rating because of two important factors, firstly, EG's exceptional singing ability and, secondly, the lead guitarist, Bill Hines, passionate playing on "Sad, Sad Sunday" (and other cuts). His evocative and understated playing is precisely what puts this song over top. By all accounts it should be a blues standard...it's that good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly refreshing
I had a couple of EG's other CD's, so I was anxious to get this new one.I was lucky enough to pick it up at one of her live performances.I've followed her career for a while now, and it's interesting to see how people who work hard and truly love what they do finally do get what they deserve.EG seems to be a genuine person, and her fans seem to genuinely love her.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good blues compilation
A nice mixture of old and new, familiar and not-so -- sort of a Blues Greatest Hits.I was a little put off by the packaging, which is so plain as to look like a cheesy reissue set, but the liner notes are good, the sound quality is good, and above all, the music is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars 50 Years of the Blues
This thirty-eight track, two-hour-plus anthology does an excellent job of presenting fifty years of blues from the post-World War II era through the present day.Disc one includes such Chicago blues giants as Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Buddy Guy who all recorded for Chess. While many of these artists did not enjoy huge crossover success, they influenced everyone from Elvis ("Hound Dog") to the Yarbirds ("I'm a Man"), The Rolling Stones ("I'm a King Bee"), Cream ("Spoonful") and George Thorogood ("One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer"). Every song on disc-one is a classic, from T-Bone Walker's million-selling "Call It Stormy Monday" to Bobby "Blue" Bland's No. 2 R&B hit "Turn on Your Love Light" (which peaked at No. 28 on the pop charts). Disc-one is required listening for anyone with even a remote interest in the blues.

Editorial Review

Silvertone Records has done a smart job of resurrecting Buddy Guy's career. When the label signed the Chicago blues guitar master in 1990, the 54-year-old legend hadn't had an American release in nine years. Silvertone introduced him to a new audience by having him play duets with such rock-star admirers as Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Jeff Beck on the 1991 album, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential moment of terror on a rock-solid album
First, it's Buddy in fine form, Second, it's G.E. Smith and the SNL band, providing excellent support. A fan of Buddy and / or a fan of the blues can't go wrong with this one, but there's a real, raw, "Hellhound On His Trail" moment that makes this a must-have. Even the fans who are moderately familiar with Buddy's history know of his connection to Muddy Waters. During "My Time After A While" (around the 5 minute mark) he does an extended Muddy "Mannish Boy" type of scat that ends with him howling "lookee here, lookee here, lookee here, lookee here" as the band rallies and stomps and thuds around a brutal, paint-peeling guitar solo. Buy this one. NOW.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good. Almost great
Buddy Guy is accompanied by the Saturday Night Live house orchestra on this album, which may only include nine songs, but still clocks in at well over an hour.
4-0 out of 5 stars buddy Guy takes the SNL band to blues school
this is an interesting album.I have been a Buddy Guy fan for a long long time and I've seen him live on a few occasions. While I like the sound of the album and it does have some great moments I just don't get the whole SNL band thing. While great technical musicians they just don't know the blues and it is glaringly obvious when one of them attempts a solo.G.E. Smith's weak excuse for a call and response section with Buddy during, "Damn Right I've Got the Blues" sounds like my cat when she is wining about being hungry.Buddy will throw out some amazing guitar line and smith will answer with something that a ten-year-old would play while learning how to bend the strings.Pathetic!the only other soloist who keeps up with Buddy on this album is the amazing Johnny Johnson on piano.the man is just a legend and he does show it here. This album seems to be another attempt to make Buddy palatable to the casual blues fan, (The ones who think Keb' Mo' is a blues artist), in an attempt to widen his audience and from a financial standpoint I can't blame him or his record company.Ih short, if you are a true Buddy Guy fan you'll find this album to sound pretty waterd down so I wouldn't rush out and buy it.If you are someone who is interested in learning about the blues and have heard about Buddy Guy then I would recommend buying this album simply because Buddy's playing is normally very intense and it may scare off someone who is not familiar with his style so start with this one and then build into the real good stuff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!!!!
Today, October 23, 2005...a drizzly, cold Sunday afternoon in Boston, I brought out this great 2-record vinyl LP from my old 60's-70's collection. As I wiped off the dust and placed it on my turntable, I flashed back to the hundreds of times over a 35-yr period that I've received tremendous pleasure and joy listening and turning my friends on to THE Blues as recorded on this LP.Having stood the classic test of time, it still sounds amazing after all these years...even with the scratches!
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the LP that did it, and did it in a big way...
After heaing this LP for the first time, nothing was ever the same for me, musically, ever again. From this, I steadily found my way through the blues, and into straight ahead jazz. Hearing James (then 'Jimmy') Cotton's "Rocket 88", or Buddy Guy's rendition of "Money" still makes me shiver. This is a great compilation of some great urban, electric blues, as well as some 'pining' southern influenced rural stuff ( Johnny Young's "Stealin", "Mule Kickin 'In My Stall", "Tobacco Road"). Otis Spann's "Spann's Stomp" and "Twisted Snake" cross deep into the early jazz genre. Marvelous stuff here for real blues lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any blues fan
A great compliation of classic electric Chicago Blues. All the performances are top notch from Buddy Guy's "Sweet Little Angel" to Otis Spann's vituosity on the keyboards to the fat full sound of Big Walter Horton this CD is a winner in everyway. A must have! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Butter proves himself.
No longer under theshadow of Mike Bloomfield's virtuosity, this is Paul's proof to the public that it was truly -his- band. Most of the band is new, but they sound like a seasoned, 'real', band. And so, Butterfield's greatest talent begins to show itself for what it is, (a talent that Bloomfield did -not- have): Band-Leading.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE BLUES ALBUM!
I have loved this record since the first time I listened to it oh so many years ago. This is, in my opinion, the best blues record ever recorded and that's saying alot. All of the songs hit the bullseye."Driftin' and Driftin'", "Born Under A Bad Sign", "Tollin' Bells", and all of the rest were truly inspired renditions of these songs.I appreciate all of the previous and latter Paul Butterfield Blues Band recordings but "The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw" is their zenith.Do yourself a favor and get this fantastic recording.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Pigboy' is the killer Butterfield Album
From Kim Whitesides colourful images to the blistering music inside this cd.This is the best of the Butterfield band during that tumultous period between its 'start' in 1965 to the late 1967 period. This album cooks with driving tunes such as 'Drivin Wheel', 'Driftin' and Driftin' and Born under a Bad Sign. After the departure of Mike Bloomfield Elvin Bishop kicks this band up several notches. His stinging solos and dynamic rhythmic interplay with other band members including drummer Phillip Wilson make this a hands down success.Phil Wilson here pumps one beat after another into this creative ensemble. He is worth the ticket alone.Sadly this wonderful musician was murdered in the 1990's.Butterfield's singing catapaults this band into 4th gear. This is the blues as it was meant to be played.Tollin' Bells is the sad and lonely blues harp wailing at life's misfortunes. The band sounds fresh and excited about this music and it still burns after several decades.Go get it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It only gets better
I've had this cd for about 7 years now and every now and then pull it out for a listen and each time I leave with a new song that I feel is the best and a need to search out a few cds from the artist who cover them .The last time was about a month ago and it hasn't been out of my car since."You Can't Always Get What You Want"...brilliant."Sway"...unforgettable."Beast of Burdon"...outstanding.This last time has been "Ventilator Blues" by the late Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown.
4-0 out of 5 stars On the Cover of the Rolling Stones!
On this CD premier blues men like Luther Allison, Junior Wells, Johnny Copeland, Holmes Brothers and Taj Mahal cover some of the Best Rolling Stones Classics and adds it a twist of Blues. The first song on the CD seems to be the absolute best and the most refreshing - Luther Allisons version of the 1969 hit "You Cant Always Get What You Want". Sadly this version came to be Luthers Last studio recording ever, recorded short before his sudden death i 1997 - But truely at the Peak of his career. 5-0 out of 5 stars Umm....yeah!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Singular Trio
I can understand the sentiment expressed by at least one of the previous reviewers that, despite the considerable appeal of this collaboration, the three remarkable singers behind it had all done better solo work before--and since. That's probably arguable, but I admit I'm kind of "solo oriented" myself. There's nothing quite like exploring the work of an individual performer at some depth.Of course, since I HAVE so much of the solo work by Nelson, Thomas and Ball, I don't personally feel deprived, and this collaboration is a certainly a welcome and kind of special treat. But I do appreciate that reviewer's frustration to a degree. Why is it that this one collaborative effort--good as it is--garnered these talented artists considerably more attention than almost anyof their solo projects? It even got them an all-too-rare Grammy nod back in 1999.
3-0 out of 5 stars All have done much better work; buy their solo work instead
Growing on me as I accept it without the expectations I get from their solo work.Mostly friendly, solid, wholly idiomatic, but unexceptional New Orleans and Memphis R&B.All of them have done much better work, but it is still fun to hear them together.Standouts:Please no more; tr 13-You don't know nothin' about love (with Tracy's full power)[49:38]

5-0 out of 5 stars These gals are the stuff.
I actually heard these ladies first on Austin City Limits and decided thatI needed the CD. Friends take one listen to this CD and fall in love withit just as I did. They like it so much that I am eager to let them take ithome. I have bought FOUR copies and sent TWO as gifts. And I don't evenhave a copy for my own right now. My female friends have shared with methat this CD is highly suitable for listening while taking a candle-litebath to soak away those "man-trouble" blues and also while tryingto shake the road-rage syndrome on the ride home from work (of which Iagree). BUY IT. And share it with a friend. ... Read more

I was a casual fan of the Siegel-Schwall band back in junior high school but hadn't thought about them in years until I saw this CD on the shelf. What a variety of music is present here!
