5-0 out of 5 stars One that lives up to its title
A lot of compilations have a title similar to this one, "the best of someone or other", yet still leave a lot to be desired.4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Restrspective of T-Bone's 1945-1960 Output
The electric guitar innovator gets the Rhino treatment with this 16-track collection of Imperial, Rumboogie, Capitol, Atlantic, Comet and Black & White sides. This is by no means the definitive collection of Walker's work, but it does serve as a nice retrospective of his 1945-1960 output.Read more

Editorial Review

One of the greatest concert recordings of all time. How could it be less, with B.B. King performing some of his best material before a literally captive audience in an Illinois prison? "Worry, Worry" and "How Blue Can You Get" take on deeper meanings here, although King works the latter's camp lyrics as if he were in a juke joint. His mix of down-home humility and commanding stagecraft is instantly appealing. And his guitar barks, sings, and squeals with such authority that this is a bravura performance from the first bent, soul-searing note. A true desert-island disc. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arguably B.B. King's Best
Fans often call B.B. King the king of the blues guitar, but if B.B. were only a brilliant guitarist he wouldn't be a household name for decades. B.B. King is also a powerful singer, a terrific interpreter of others' material, an effective bandleader and - most importantly - a thoroughly professional entertainer. You can experience all B.B. King's sides on the "Cook County Jail" CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of BB King
This CD captures the very essence of what makes Blues Boy King the King of the Blues. The power of BB's music thunders througout the CD. This album has the best rendition of "The Thrill is Gone" I have ever heard, and I've heard just about all the versions he has done over the years. You can almost see him crooning to the microphone with his eyes closed, and Lucille gives this song so much more with her solo at the end. If anything buy this CD for the "The Thrill is Gone"; as soon as you get it turn it up, sit down and close your eyes...

Editorial Review

Muddy Waters started out playing acoustic blues in the Delta, and it shows on this return to his roots, designed to appeal to the mid-1960s surge of interest in folk music. The back of the CD includes a photo of Waters with bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon, as well as a very young Buddy Guy, gathered around a single microphone. This particular CD reissue includes five bonus tracks, among which are "The Same Thing" and "Short Dress Woman," which take advantage of the longer CD running time. All of the other reasons to hear this one remain--Waters's strong, confident voice, the relaxed smoothness of the material, and the surprisingly clean recording, made even cleaner by the digital remastering. 5-0 out of 5 stars Lousy Title. Fabulous Music
This is not a folk album; it's a blues album. And it's one of the best blues albums anybody ever recorded. I have a lot of Muddy Waters' CDs, and this one makes me stop and listen to how great his voice was, how well he could tell a story, how deeply he could hook you. You get that "back porch blues" feeling, like he's there with you on a hot summer night strummin' and singin' with a couple of friends he brought along.
5-0 out of 5 stars BLUES EN SU SIMPLE Y MAGISTRAL ESCENCIA
Este album llego a mi por simple curiosidad en el 2000. Nunca imagine que alguien pudiese juntar tal talento en sus manos y voz como lo hizo Muddy para este album. La seccion de musicos que le sirven de soporte son nada mas y nada menos que. Buddy Guy y Willie Dixon. No hay palabras que puedan describir la magia que emanan de estas grabaciones, tan solo blues en su mas puro estado... es como trasladarse al delta de los 1930. Sonido puro y llanamente acustico con un entramado de guitarras magistral entre Muddy y Buddy Guy que sirven de fondo a la ya famosa interpretacion vocal de Muddy y eso sin contar con el solido sonido de Willie Dixon al bajo. Recuerdo que en una vieja revista de blues apuntaba sobre la existencia de este disco como una muestra de musica folk interpretada por quien se supone fue, es y sera la mejor voz y guitarra del blues americano... pero aqui no hay nada de folk, es blues delta en su estado mas primitivo. Maravilloso y dotado de una sencillez total que asombran por el resultado; PURA MAGIA. Se agregan una serie de bonus tracks que no deslucen del contenido inicial de la edicion original...pero los temas grabados en acustico son y seran la parte central de esta obra unica en su genero. Las fotografias que se incluyen en el inserto y enla propia caja del cd demuestran por su elegancia el disfrute de tres maestros del blues que nunca imaginaron que al juntarse para esta sencilla grabacion, crearian una de las mejores muestras del espiritu del blues delta. El album recoje algunos de los temas mas interesantes de la discografia del Mudddy;
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Only Muddy, also a Great Buddy Guy and Willie Dixon Album
As the other reviewers have already clearly said, this is one of the 25? 10? 5? 3? greatest Albums of all time. I never tire of hearing it and the extension tracksa are nicely chosen. If you like the blues just a little, you'll be happy you bought this.

This is the infamous "somebody-put-something-in-the-Waters" LP from 1968. A relative hit for Chess, it features the exalted bluesman bellowing over psychedelicized arrangements that owe more to Steppenwolf than Willie Dixon. Waters himself complained that the drums were too busy and the lead guitar sounded like a cat's meow. Not a bad critique. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like Electric Mud, watch the film!
It's funny how when it comes to the products that Amazon sells, company reviewers just happen to always write glowing reviews -except in this case. Here, Steven Stolder really picked the wrong recording to knock. "Electric Mud" isn't for everybody, but it's great for what it is. It sounds like the spirit of Jimi Hendrix possessed Muddy Waters for a session at Chess Records. This important album turned new generations of listeners onto the Blues. If you dig this album, then you must watch "Godfathers and Sons," a film which is the fifth disc in Martin Scorsese's "The Blues: A Musical Journey." In this documentary, Marshall Chess (the producer for "Electric Mud") explains the history of the project to none other than Chuck D.Furthermore, the film captures the reunion of the Electric Mud band with the addition of a DJ and rapper. If you've been able to put aside the negative reviews and find a place in your heart for "Electric Mud," the film is essential. As for me, I picked the disc up after watching the film. I am happy that the film turned me onto such a unique recording.

I bought this LP a year or two after it came out, and to my Hendrix/Cream/Page 'energized' ears, Muddy Waters never sounded better!
4-0 out of 5 stars WHERE IS THE CAT?
I bought this lp in 1968,(for $1.77) It was in the bargain bins at JC PENNY. I was 14, and this was my introduction to muddy.OK I am very happy they released this on cd. It brings back a lot of fond memories. A lot of people slammed this album but I think it rocks. The sound quality of the cd is very good, but they edited out the cat screaming at the start of "tom cat" Anyway dont expect a traditional muddy waters album, but this is a lot of fun with the fuzz guitar, and driving drums. Now maybe they will release "after the rain" marshall chess's other cadet concept muddy waters album. ... Read more

I really love this CD.It goes everywhere with me the house, the car, work and parties.I've carried it around so many places and played it so much that it developed a scratch that I couldn't get out! That's why I had to have a second copy!I can't do without Kenny!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as bluesy as his earlier albums.
I am a huge fan of Kenny Wayne Shepherd. But I was disappointed in "Live On."It's more hard rock than blues.Naturally, it's all a matter of personal taste. If you likemore of a hard sound, you may like this. But it's quite a departure from his earlier work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live On is an enticing blend of Blues/Rock
If you like guitar driven blues with a twist of classic rock than you'll love this album.Kenny's playing is excellant and unlike other critics I think the vocals are fine for this genre.Excellant rocked up version of Oh Well is one of many highlights. In 2 Deep and Last Goodbye are great songs. Was,Shotgun Blues and You Should Know Better do not dissapoint. All told 14 tracks for your pleasure. There are those of us that think KWS, Joe Bonamassa and Rob Tognoni are carrying the blues/rock-classic rock torch. The sad part is how few realize how great a job they are doing. If you like these three then check out Bill Perry, Smokin' Joe Kubek and Gary Moore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential blues
You would probably already know that Mike Bloomfield is considered one of the best and most influential white blues guitarist ever lived. Unfortunately, due to several circumstances, and mainly to his character (apparently he was not the kind of person you would get on easily together) and his life style, his musical legacy is spread across several different albums recorded with several different bands and several different solo efforts. Due to the above, even his playing has been wonderful (most of the time) but sometime not so good either. This collection, covering 5 years of his career, includes some of his finest blues recordings, some of which previously unissued gems. If you never heard of him, I believe this is the right point to start with. Hearing him playing the blues at a so young age for sure will make you thinking about what a major star he would probably have been if his life weren't ended so tragically. This is a magnificent collection of great blues that should not be missed by any serious blues fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mikey, We Miss You

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!
This is Tab's best studio CD since Standing on the Bank. I Smell a Rat is the BOMB! Tab is mistaken for a "new" artist. He has been recording since 1992 and only plays smaller venues. This is part of the reason for his limited notariaty. The other part of the equation is his determination to play only blues and not go commercial (rock) with his music. I own every CD he has put out. Each one shows his progression as a guitarist and performer. I think Fever for the Bayou is a return to his earlier music with out all the extra instruments and vocals. If you ever have the chance to see Tab live, do it. The show will blow you away! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro. to The Blues
If you like Classic Rock and Roll and are looking to get into The Blues this is a great place to start.Chess Records, in following the success of Fathers and Sons, ships both Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters to play with a who's who of British Rock.On this album, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Charlie Watts, and more accompany Howlin for a set of his classic tunes. While this may not be Howlin Wolf's best material it is still fun.The take out of Little Red Rooster is great where Eric and others try to talk Howlin into play along.Steve Winwood really shines on this album.Howlin while not at his peak is still a force of the blues. This is a great place to start and a great way to get someone into the blues.Won't spare the expense of the delux version.

5-0 out of 5 stars LISTEN BABY, HAVE YOU EVER BEEN LOVED BY A MAN THEY CALL THE WOLF?

3-0 out of 5 stars A fun listen--but doesn't approach wolf at his best
This album was my introduction to the Wolf, and I loved it. It was after I had heard some of his other work and then came back to the London Sessions that I found myself disappointed. Howlin' Wolf possessed the most distinctive voice in blues--a genre full of distinct voices. The London Sessions feature a fairly ill, and rather old Howlin' Wolf, and he simply doesn't have the raw power that he possessed on earlier albums. The songs on this album are good as always, and the Rolling Stones' rhythm section, the Eric Clapton guitar work, give Wolf an updated rock feel. If you're looking for classic blues songs with a slightly smoother feel and production, this is definitely a great purchase. But if you want Wolf at his most powerful, check out something earlier, like "Moanin' in the Moonlight". ... Read more

Trying to boil down a prolific 40-year career into 18 songs is an impossible task, but that doesn't stop Rhino from taking a shot. To its credit, this single-CD compilation reaches across many labels, highlighting Guy's explosive work for Chess and Vanguard in the 1960s, Atlantic in the 1970s, and diverse labels in the 1980s. On the other hand, his Chess and Vanguard work deserve significantly more attention than they're given here. In addition, Guy's rejuvenated 1990s work for Silvertone is completely ignored. The result is a rather cursory overview of Guy's career, despite the high quality of what is present. The benefit of this approach, however, is that it displays Guy's versatility: The Guy of feverish guitar pyrotechnics, wailing vocals, and rocker intensity lives alongside a smoother, more soulful and melodic Guy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Start for New Buddy Fans
Anyone familiar with blues Gitar' knows Buddy is the man. While I don't think that he's anymore talented than the other greatest living bluesman,Otis Rush, he seems to play like Otis with a whole lot more solos. What I wouldn't give to see one of their classic duels in the flesh.Buddy's chess recordings are of course top notch, but my favorite on this complition is the 7 minute extravaganza "Blues at My Baby's House", which in my opinion features some of Buddy's most soulful licks and vocals. If you can only afford one Buddy Guy record make it this or his 2-cd chess collection, that one really cooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Single Buddy Guy Compilation.
For someone on a budget who is interested in the music of this legendary artist, look no further than this single disc album. The sound and track selection here are excellent. Anyone interested in electric Chicago Blues needs to have at least one Buddy Guyalbum in their collection; and you can't go wrong here. There is some song overlap here with the "Chess 50th Collection" single disc compilation, but "Very Best Of" features 18 tracks over the 15 presented in the "Chess 50th Collection" cd.Plus, this disc has the great remastered sound the folks at Rhino are known for. For those of you have a few extra dollars around, I strongly suggest 2 disc set, "The Complete Chess Studio Sessions" which boasts 47 tracks!
5-0 out of 5 stars The all around best intro cd to Buddy Guy!
There are too many great blues artists out there to spend a fortune on every artists complte recordings would cost tens of thousands of dollars, so getting comprehensive samplers of the artists earliest recordings in the best way to go.This cd have mostly the 50's & 60's sessions, his early stuff, and a bit towards the end of the cd his later works, but just a small sampling, the majority of the cd is his best work for Chess and other jump blues labels. This cd is exellent and is the difinitive sampler(though one should not overlook his duo albums with junior Wells), this cd will do a fine job of summing up Guy in his early prime and middle years.Guy has an incredibly piercing voice, similsr in texture and feeling as BB King, though less of a baritone, and his guitar solos, are creative, and even jazz and improvisation occur every so often. This cd is full of energetic performances, from shuffling jump blues to slow blues drags, it's all great stuff.Essential for any blues collection, to be complete. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars FATHER OF ELECTRIC BLUES
T-Bone not only invented the electric blues but he still remains it's most towering stylist and symbol of pure cool. T-Bone's smokey after hours blues is still one of the most vital parts of the genre. Smooth is the key word here. T-Bone's singing and playing never lacked the smooth quality that was T-Bone Walker. He could sing songs of misery and hurt with incredibly deep soul but still manage to keep it cool. This set is a fantastic value! Each track stands on it's own merit. I don't have a favorite here because all are top notch.
5-0 out of 5 stars I have nothing but pure admiration for "Bone..."
The late "T-Bone" Walker, a pioneering mastre of the electric blues guitar and a close friend/ certainly unremitting influence on my Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton another "axe-handler" during the immediate postwar era. However, avoiding comparisons, Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton brought enough "heat" and daring innovation to his playing to avoid being labeled as a mere "T-Bone" copy-"kat."
5-0 out of 5 stars you will be jumpin' and swinging in no time
T-Bone sweet T-Bone - he is the founder of modern blues - and I think he does not get enough credit for his influence on jazz guitar. Kenny Burrell, in fact, has mentioned that T-Bone was one of his early influences. He certainly has a sweet tone, and he has a nice voice too. Pair this with a hot horn section, and this cd is a steal at 10 bucks. T-Bone is a classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
This is the best single disc Freddie King Collection on the market, considering that Hideaway: The best of Freddie King is out of print. Two or three selections are doubtful (Dust my broom and Sugar sweet), but mostly it is really good, combining his trademark instrumentals (Hideaway, The Stumble, etc) with wocal tracks. Freddie's sharp, melodic and intense guitar playing influenced a lot white blues guitarists - most obviously - at least to my ears - Eric Clapton on the John Mayall's Bluesbrakers with Eric Clapton album. If you like blues, or just great guitar playing (and there's some fine singing from Freddie as well), get this record.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic melodic, poppy blues
They say timing is everything, and in Freddie King's case, that certainly was true. His early hits, especially the classic instrumentals, "Hide Away" and "San-Ho-Zay," came out in 1960 and '61, at precisely the right moment for his career to intersect with the SoCal surf scene (which also centered on instrumental numbers) and the nascent British blues revival, which was ever eager to find American bluesmen to latch onto and laud. Here, white kids on both sides of the Atlantic had a guy who bridged the gap between raw authenticity and pop polish, setting the standard for the zilllion-and-one future Fendermen who sought to sharpen their guitar chops.Fittingly, King cracked into the US Top 40 while also picking up flocks of converts (such as Eric Clapton) who worshipped his fluid, pop-tinged electric guitar leads.King's style was a perfect distillation of the smooth yet soulful postwar blues style, rootsy yet accessible and perfectly pitched for the ears of adoring white blues fans. His career had its ups and downs, but by the time he passed away in 1976, he had packed them in on the pop and blues circuits... This disc covers the breadth of his career, matching the ace oldies up with a good selection of his often overly-bombastic later material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freddie King is a blues master
I don't have this actual CD, but I have most of the songs that are on it from other collections and they are all great. This is a great collection of Freddie King's work from his earliest recordings (1960's "Have You Ever Loved A Woman") to his later Shelter records material (1969's "Palace of the King" and "Going Down"). If you like blues guitar, then at least one Freddie King CD should be in your collection. He influenced countless guitarists, particularly Eric Clapton. This is a good place to start if you're new to this blues guitar master. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem.
This is Muddy Waters rocking out!He is in fine voice, a force of nature, with a hard driving band.Forget the labels, this is joyous rock n' roll.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic look at a true legend
According to the liner notes from this one, Muddy had a tough time with Blues festivals. First he was too electric and loud. The next year he was too acoustic and quiet. From the sound of this one, he finally got it just right.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all-time classic live blues albums
Muddy Waters' July, 1960 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival was recorded and issued as one of the first live blues albums, and one of the very best as well. A bit short at only nine songs (plus four studio recordings), but that's just about the only complaint you could possibly lodge against this classic recording.

Editorial Review

Call it three for the price of one. Far from engaging in a guitar-playing shootout, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, and Johnny Copeland work together incredibly well, achieving a kind of musical synergy that's rarely heard. Copeland and Cray handle most of the vocal duties, and Cray's smooth, soul-tinged voice (positively shiver-eliciting on "The Dream," as is Collins's lead guitar work) complements Copeland's growl perfectly. Collins doesn't get to sing as much, but he more than makes up for it with his harmonica on the slow blues "Bring Your Fine Self Home." And of course, all three turn in stellar guitar work, trading solos and rhythm parts with the greatest of ease; Cray was a relative newcomer at the time of this recording, but he more than holds his own. One would be hard pressed to find a better blues collaboration anywhere. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have in Any Blues Collection - Simply Stellar
I just came across this disc recently, while I was doing searches on Johnny Copeland's records. When this record came up, I was surprised to see Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, and Robert Cray play together, but now I know that both Copeland and Cray were Albert Collins' proteges when they were starting out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Synergy
I first bought this on vinyl in the mid-80s. I listened to a lot of blues back then because, well, pop music really sucked.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Collaboration
I've been listening to this effort for over a decade and it still sounds good. It's hard to imagine that these guys hadn't worked together for years. Many collaborative efforts come off as contrived. This comes off smooth and natural. The combination of Collins' guitar and Cray's voice on "The Dream" is spine-tingling. "Black Cat Bone" is another favorite. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ...too bad!
Bought this album when it came out and was blown away by it...epecially "That's Allright Mama" and "Green Onions".I was seventeen.I thoght it was good but I also thight that there would be better music of this level to come as I got older. It's been nearly 40 years since and there hasn't...too bad!

5-0 out of 5 stars A milestone album!
From the first time I listened this album in those vinyl days, I had the presentiment we were in front a towering album. One of those successful accidents far from being planned, and conceived simply as a happy musical encounter supported by two outstanding musicians of the height of Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield.
4-0 out of 5 stars More to the Story
I have it on very good authority that Carlos Santana filled in for MB on Sonny Boy Williamson. I'll have to get the CD now, Carlos has a very distinctive style. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyreviewhereis5 stars
because this is as good as it gets for blues singing, guitar playing and songwriting not necessarily in any order --- Otis Rush is as great a blues artist as any other in the history of the genre

5-0 out of 5 stars Blues at its best
Excellent compilation and a great collection of songs recorded under the limited enviroment that Eli Toscanos Cobra Studio had, but all these songs stand by themselves. Every time I hear Otis or Freddie King I can hear Eric Clapton, its clear he got influenced by this great musician. I cant quit you baby, a song written by Willie Dixon (who plays almost all the bass parts) later covered by Led Zeppelin and All your love later covered by the same Eric Clapton with John Mayall and also Aerosmith payed tribute this song later on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent
A criminally underrated performer, southpaw guitarist Otis Rush broke into the R&B top 10 on his first attempt with the great slow blues "I Can't Quit You Baby".

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kind of Blues as well
I had read that this was B.B. Kings' favorite album. After hearing I can see why. I don't know what year this was produced, but from the cover photo it seems to be early in his career.
