4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic...
This is a classic jam performance by two masters of the Blues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Albert King In Session
I heard the song, "Don't Lie To Me" on a local blues station one night and was blown away.I don't typically write reviews, but this album is superb.I will boldly state that I think Albert King is better than B.B. King, and I am not alone in this belief.Stevie Ray Vaughn and Albert King create magic on this album.I enjoy Albert's playing so much that I typically skip past the SRV song (second song on the album) and continue on with Albert.Do NOT miss out on the enjoyment this album will give you.The sound quality is absolutely top notch, and the songs are great.Buy it and enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mutual Admiration Society
It is clear that these 2 men liked each other and enjoyed trading solos. However,it is alsomuch more of an Albert King showcase, with standout performances of Ask Me No Questions, Don't Lie To Me , and Stormy Monday. What I like most about it is that it sounds so much better (i.e. dynamic and modern) than most of the old Albert King albums. This album really captures thehigh energy and power of a remarkable singer and guitarist(Albert King), and you canhear the musical roots of where Steve Ray's sound came from. It was misleading to list 11 cuts on the album , since 4 are simply fragments of conversation between the 2 guitar heroes. However the songs are lenghty, for example, Blues At Sunrise runs over 15 minutes, andthose conversations add to the overall feel of a live concert , even though it is a studio recording., Theonce in a lifetime combination of these 2 icons on the same album make this a real collector's item for blues fans ... Editorial Review

Heralded as one of the greatest live blues albums ever recorded, this set catches the singer-guitarist as his star was in ascent: in 1964 playing Chicago's answer to Harlem's Apollo Theater--the Regal. King's performance is visceral. He sings so hard that gravel flies even in his clearest high notes. And his trademark single-note guitar lines are sharp and steely, matching his voice with trembling vigor. He offers early hits like "How Blue Can You Get," "Worry, Worry," and "You Upset Me Baby" to what's essentially his adopted hometown crowd (by his own account, King had already played the theater hundreds of times). They give him a hero's welcome. In fact, the audience's screaming enthusiasm is distracting. But rarely has a love-fest of this magnitude between a performer and fans been documented. --Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Regally Overrated
I can't believe the touch of B.B. King. I enjoy his playing immensely. I know this album gets buried in accolades. But I don't like it. The quality is poor and, differing from other's opinions, the crowd noise takes away from the music. B.B. said, in so many words, that Live at the Regal was far from his choice as his best recording. Typically, he said he wouldn't argue with success--and left it at that. There are so many good albums by B.B. You can't go wrong for $4.65 for the "Ultimate Collection". Sure it doesn't have them all--but it has quite a few of his great songs, including a few from Live at the Regal. I would steer clear of this selection. Or I'll send you mine for free!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Really Have To Hate Music To Not Like This
One of the first things people notice when listening to B.B. King's Live At The Regal album is that the response of the audience is rapturous, almost like the congregation at a Pentecostal church. There's a reason for this. This is simply the natural response of anyone hearing the King of the Blues at the peak of his powers.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Blues Timemachine
Absolutely one of the finest live albums of all times.I bought this album because it was listed as one of the top 100 guitar albums of all time in Guitar Player Magazine. You get lightning in a bottle here with BB King at the height of his powers. The audience is alive and you can feel the young woman hyperventilating and swooning to BB King's rendition of some blues classics. His voice is flawless, still velvety smooth, especially when compared with later live albums by BB King. There is the perfect mixture of BB King's introductions or setups for each tune, guitar, vocals and audience reaction. The sound is immaculate, balanced and clear. His guitar playing is efficient and his timing is perfect. It makes you wonder why more recent "live albums" lack the spontaneity and quality found in this recording. The only regret is the album is not longer. ... Editorial Review

One of the greatest concert recordings of all time. How could it be less, with B.B. King performing some of his best material before a literally captive audience in an Illinois prison? "Worry, Worry" and "How Blue Can You Get" take on deeper meanings here, although King works the latter's camp lyrics as if he were in a juke joint. His mix of down-home humility and commanding stagecraft is instantly appealing. And his guitar barks, sings, and squeals with such authority that this is a bravura performance from the first bent, soul-searing note. A true desert-island disc. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arguably B.B. King's Best
Fans often call B.B. King the king of the blues guitar, but if B.B. were only a brilliant guitarist he wouldn't be a household name for decades. B.B. King is also a powerful singer, a terrific interpreter of others' material, an effective bandleader and - most importantly - a thoroughly professional entertainer. You can experience all B.B. King's sides on the "Cook County Jail" CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of BB King
This CD captures the very essence of what makes Blues Boy King the King of the Blues. The power of BB's music thunders througout the CD. This album has the best rendition of "The Thrill is Gone" I have ever heard, and I've heard just about all the versions he has done over the years. You can almost see him crooning to the microphone with his eyes closed, and Lucille gives this song so much more with her solo at the end. If anything buy this CD for the "The Thrill is Gone"; as soon as you get it turn it up, sit down and close your eyes...

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem.
This is Muddy Waters rocking out!He is in fine voice, a force of nature, with a hard driving band.Forget the labels, this is joyous rock n' roll.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic look at a true legend
According to the liner notes from this one, Muddy had a tough time with Blues festivals. First he was too electric and loud. The next year he was too acoustic and quiet. From the sound of this one, he finally got it just right.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all-time classic live blues albums
Muddy Waters' July, 1960 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival was recorded and issued as one of the first live blues albums, and one of the very best as well. A bit short at only nine songs (plus four studio recordings), but that's just about the only complaint you could possibly lodge against this classic recording.

4-0 out of 5 stars ****1/2. Better sound, better mixes

1-0 out of 5 stars F for sound
Well this is a total F for sound. I have 3 dif 3 cd players, home, port, and car, and yes they are good ones, car is a Q45 with a Bose. I bought this CD because of the reviews I read here, what is everyone smoking? or is there not that good of stuff avail from Albert? I don't own any other CD's, but I do know about him from the SRV Sessions VHS I have had for a few years, and it sounds pretty good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody Can Enjoy
Some guys play guitar to impress girls. They play some cool sounding licks and are rewarded with oohs and aahs.Other serious guitar players impress other guitar players, but their talent surpasses the mortal mind, and they might not appeal to a wide audience.Albert King is a guitar players' guitar player that everyone can enjoy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Blues guitarist ever!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blues at Sunrise: Live at Montreux
This is a very well done live recording. Both the material and the sound quality are top notch. The only thing I found missing was some additional material from the festival not on this CD. For that one must get the "Blues at Sunset" CD that contains the rest of the set as well as more excellent recordings from the Wattstax concert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Albert is god!

5-0 out of 5 stars simply stunnig
what you're holding in your hand is one of the very best live blues album ever. I own quite a few albert's album but this one has always found a special place in my heart. Both the setlist and the performances are wonderful and it has my favourite version of i'll play the blues for you. After he says "exscuse me" he unveils a terrific solo that gets you realize what blues power is all about, the interplays with the horns section is stunning and the voice, man, the voice...if you gotta get just one album by this master get this one, you wont be disappointed ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Now IGet it
A long time ago a friend whose music taste I trust told me he had just seen an incredible performance at the Fillmore in NY by " a blues guy named Albert King." I bought all the available albums and didn't get it. Thislive recording captures what I have been hoping for. There is no more powerful performance than Albert's " I'LL Play the Blues For You". "Killing FLoor" does it too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blues at Sunset
One of the best live recordings of Albert King. Even without the usual horn section on the Wattatax set, it lacks nothing. The rest of the Montreaux set not included on the "Blues At Sunrise" CD are found here and are, again, some of Albert Kings best.

Robert Nighthawk's slide guitar was revered by the likes of Muddy Waters and B.B. King. It's easy to hear why on this raw, lively, and relaxed recording of Nighthawk and a few of his cronies, including harmonica ace Carey Bell, playing outdoors at Chicago's famed Maxwell Street Market. It's the kind of setting Nighthawk loved (for more of the music recorded there, also check out the three-CD set Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nighthawk: Master of the Slide
Robert Nighthawk is a true master of slide guitar. His slide playing is low-down, dark, emotive, and causes me to make all kinds of strange facial expressions. Nighthawk had a relaxed singing voice and a decent variety of blues lyrics, though his real strength was his killer guitar playing. However, the song "Mama, Talk To Your Daughter" keeps me from giving this album 5 stars. The singer, who is probably not J.B. Lenoir, doesn't have the greatest voice and sometimes forgets to sing directly into the microphone. The song is also very repetitive, and is better when it's kept to three minutes or so in length, like Lenoir or John Lee Hooker's versions of it. Don't get me wrong; this is an awesome album, and one of the top three greatest live blues albums of all-time. The thirteen minute interview is very enjoyable and revealing. Nighthawk seems like a quiet, reserved, humble man, and it's a shame that some of the slide playing he demonstrates in the interview didn't provoke him to disregard the interview altogether and play entire songs! One can definitely see where Muddy Waters' solo on his live version of "Streamline Woman" came from; Muddy borrowed it from Nighthawk. As another reviewer said, if you are interested in the California, studio-produced, obnoxious, crappy music that is an indication of the downfall of Western Civilization, avoid this album because you won't like it.If you are interested in authentic electric blues, forget about Vaughan, Clapton and Johnny Winter for now, and get to the heart of electric blues- Robert Nighthawk, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real Blues the Way It Was Meant to Be Played
Ashlee Simpson fans would not appreciate this CD.This is real blues played live in a relaxed setting.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all-time classic blues records
Robert Lee McCullum, called "Nighthawk" after his song "Prowling Nighthawk", was one of the major innovators of electric blues. He was a stylish and extremely versatile slide guitarist, and the man behind blues classics such as "Anna Lee" and the definitive reading of "Sweet Black Angel" (a song which is usually associated with B.B. King, who re-named it "Sweet Little Angel").

Poor yourself a mellow bourbon, light up a fine cigar and enoy a laid back evening with the legendary blues of Mr. B.B. King & Bobby Blue Bland. Editorial Review

The blues world lost a treasure when Luther Allison died in 1997, just as he was finally garnering the recognition he so richly deserved. If there's any question of that, this live album, recorded at the 1995 Chicago Blues Festival and at Buddy Guy's Legends, will dispel any such notion. A performer and songwriter of the first order, Allison had the sort of mastery of his instrument that comes from long experience; whether rolling off licks on the "Gambler's Blues/Sweet Little Angel" medley, or playing extended solos on "All the King's Horses," Allison's on the ball and in control at all times. This album contains mostly newer material previously recorded for Alligator Records, like "Soul Fixin' Man," "Bad Love," "All the King's Horses," and "What Have I Done Wrong?" Overall, this is an excellent memorial to a musician who should be remembered. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Blues Album From Late Guitar Slinger Luther Allison
Luther Allison died just as he was on the verge of gaining the recognition in America that he so greatly wanted and richly deserved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blues Star Makes His Own Way Foreign and Comes Home To the States for a Huge Comback Like We've Never Seen!
Picture this:a blues musician that started out emulating BB King's licks eventually takes over Freddy King's band in Chicago at the peak of when blues are hot!He then goes on to become the only blues musician to record for Motown (at the same time Marvin Gaye is laying down hits!)and not only that his Motown album becomes the highest sold from an unknown's first album ever.To juice up the story a bit more let us say he is the only guitarist that can effectively have a full conversation with his guitar and to in 1960 break the sound barrier with later day Mariah Carey screams!Too good to be true?
5-0 out of 5 stars Luther Is The Man
This Live Blues set from 1995 shortly before his death is a classic. Luther's guitar style has several sounds. His Chicago Blues style with lots of horns, to his party band sound, as well as several slide sets, this is a very impressive album. His 'Gimme Back My Wig' is a slide extravaganta. My favorite, 'All The King's Horses' is a searing, blistering nearly 12 minute version that leaves you panting for more. We will enjoy this one for years to come. This set is truly a masterpiece. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome live blues guitar
Albert was at his best live...This is awesome guitar playing and Albert's singing is awesome as well. One listen to this and one realizes that Albert King is truly THE master of the blues guitar. ALL songs are excellent! "Don't throw your love on me so strong" is the VERY BEST BLUES GUITAR PLAYING I've ever heard and that includes SRV, Hendrix and the rest of King's followers. He was the BEST!!! Thursday Night and Live Wire/Blues Power are also MUSTS!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hot Blues!
Albert King recorded this CD on Wednesday June 26, 1968, one day prior to his more popular and better known release, "Thursday Night In San Francisco".This disc represents the first day that Albert performed at the Filmore as the headliner.Prior to that time, he had appeared as the opener for Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Albert's "best" performance that evening, as well as the next day, (according to Stax anyway) was originally released by Stax on the "Live Wire/Blues Power" CD.The songs contained on both, the Wednesday and the Thursday CD were thought to be a cut below and were not included.Fortunately for us, Stax took another look at the material, albeit 22 years later, and released the remainder of the material as it occurred on two separate discs. In order to gain a full understanding as to what occurred on those two nights, King fans should purchase all three of these excellent recordings. As with the other two discs, King's performance is outstanding. ... Read more

Silvertone Records has done a smart job of resurrecting Buddy Guy's career. When the label signed the Chicago blues guitar master in 1990, the 54-year-old legend hadn't had an American release in nine years. Silvertone introduced him to a new audience by having him play duets with such rock-star admirers as Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Jeff Beck on the 1991 album, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential moment of terror on a rock-solid album
First, it's Buddy in fine form, Second, it's G.E. Smith and the SNL band, providing excellent support. A fan of Buddy and / or a fan of the blues can't go wrong with this one, but there's a real, raw, "Hellhound On His Trail" moment that makes this a must-have. Even the fans who are moderately familiar with Buddy's history know of his connection to Muddy Waters. During "My Time After A While" (around the 5 minute mark) he does an extended Muddy "Mannish Boy" type of scat that ends with him howling "lookee here, lookee here, lookee here, lookee here" as the band rallies and stomps and thuds around a brutal, paint-peeling guitar solo. Buy this one. NOW.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good. Almost great
Buddy Guy is accompanied by the Saturday Night Live house orchestra on this album, which may only include nine songs, but still clocks in at well over an hour.
4-0 out of 5 stars buddy Guy takes the SNL band to blues school
this is an interesting album.I have been a Buddy Guy fan for a long long time and I've seen him live on a few occasions. While I like the sound of the album and it does have some great moments I just don't get the whole SNL band thing. While great technical musicians they just don't know the blues and it is glaringly obvious when one of them attempts a solo.G.E. Smith's weak excuse for a call and response section with Buddy during, "Damn Right I've Got the Blues" sounds like my cat when she is wining about being hungry.Buddy will throw out some amazing guitar line and smith will answer with something that a ten-year-old would play while learning how to bend the strings.Pathetic!the only other soloist who keeps up with Buddy on this album is the amazing Johnny Johnson on piano.the man is just a legend and he does show it here. This album seems to be another attempt to make Buddy palatable to the casual blues fan, (The ones who think Keb' Mo' is a blues artist), in an attempt to widen his audience and from a financial standpoint I can't blame him or his record company.Ih short, if you are a true Buddy Guy fan you'll find this album to sound pretty waterd down so I wouldn't rush out and buy it.If you are someone who is interested in learning about the blues and have heard about Buddy Guy then I would recommend buying this album simply because Buddy's playing is normally very intense and it may scare off someone who is not familiar with his style so start with this one and then build into the real good stuff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must!!
I'll keep this review brief. This CD is nothing less than a Blues guitar statement. One like few others! An absolute must for Blues fans, period! Five stars are not enough for this CD!

1-0 out of 5 stars F for bad sound
Well this is a total F for sound.I have 3 dif 3 cd players, home, port, and car, and yes they are good ones, car is a Q45 with a Bose. I bought this CD because of the reviews I read here, what is everyone smoking?or is there not that good of stuff avail from Albert?I don't own any other CD's, but I do know about him from the SRV Sessions VHS I have had for a few years, and it sounds pretty good.
5-0 out of 5 stars can't get enough of it
Wow.I just came across this CD for real cheap, and boy was I glad I got it.I have listened to lots of blues players of different types, and the guitar of Albert King is amazing, especially on this disc.I have his In Session CD live with SRV, which was a really strong CD, but this particular CD presents a better sound of his guitar, in my opinion. It sounds sweeter, more well-rounded, powerful, diverse, and dead-on.I really love Albert King's work, and I always wish songs like "Blues Power" and "Blues at Sunrise" were much much longer because this type of slower blues has the sweetest licks.Get this CD.It radiates such warm, positive energy. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Albert Collins live
I am a big fan of Albert's guitar playing and I bought this CD hoping that his last material before his death would be good to have and listen to. I am not disappointed with Albert's playing but the recording quality is woeful and it is not worth paying the money for unless you have to have all Albert's recordings, his other live material is much better. Sorry but it's simply not up to scratch for a 1990's recording

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Live Blues
This is one of my favorite recordings from one of my favorite guitarists. If you want to play in Texas, you have to play music that people can dance to.Cowboys, oil workers, black folks and Mexican Americans all love to dance in Texas and expect to hear dancin' music when they go out to clubs. This influence is heard in most of the works of Mr. Collins, a Texas native, and especially in this CD.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fine latter-day Collins
These performances were recorded shortly before Collins' death in late 1993, but rather than sounding tired, they offer proof that the "Master of the Telecaster" remained a commanding stage presence until the end.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BB King at his best!
I have been listening to this record for over 25 years, BB:s tone on this record still strikes me as it did the first time I heard it. One of BB:s outro:s in one of the medleys on this record is a fantastic value for the price paid for this alone. You can hear a young BB play really loud and strong making his amp sing in fantastic overtones on this one, not that nice and sweet studio tone. The two artists, BB and Bobby, works very well together and if their first record together was Bobbys, this is definitely BB:s.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Combination
BB on Lucille and Bobby on vocals is a great combination. The two compliment eachother's talents.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fine, but not as good as their first
This is a reprise of the wonderfully successful first album these two did together. It is worth having not only for their obvious enjoyment working together, but for the terrific job in "Let The Good Times Roll". Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the Raucous Rawness
The most famous Hound Dog Taylor quote was: "When I die, they'll say: 'He couldn't play sh*t, but he sure made it sound good.'" This is a man who understands his appeal. Taylor played a beat-up guitar, and he cranked on the thing, playing distorted, screeching notes. But god, it DID sound good. And as the quote implies, he had the personality to go with the raucous, raw music that he played. Which is why this album is so good. It's live, so you can hear the sound imperfections, the screaming crowd, and Taylor's off-kilter banter and sense of humor. And that's probably the perfect way to listen to Taylor. To put it all another way: He plays a version of "She'll Be Coming 'round the Mountain" that makes you want to get up and dance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hound Dog rocks da house!!!!!!!!!
Hound Dog's searing slide guitar and vocals tear you to the quick with a depth and passion unequalled nowadays. This rocks!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great blues album
This album is a masterpiece. The highlights of this album are "The Sun is Shining" and "Freddie's Blues" . The way he uses feedback in "Freddie's Blues" is truley amazing. It's like Hound Dogs Ghost. I bought this ablum and it was well worth the money. This album is a frequent in my CD player. Any blues fan will like this Album ... Read more

Editorial Review

Released in 1979, this live album is a gem, from the enthusiastic audience (who cheer every line of opener "Mannish Boy") to Muddy Waters's killer guitar to vocals that tease and deliver by turns. The slide work is what to listen for here, especially on "Howling Wolf," where Waters gives any guitar virtuoso a run for his money. There are other special moments as well, including the absolutely killer timing on "She's Nineteen Years Old," the rock-bottom-deep vocals on "Baby Please Don't Go," and the slow sensuality of "Deep Down in Florida." The only shortcoming of this CD is that it's so short: there are only seven songs here, which will leave any listener wanting more. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Muddy rocks it live
Muddy's vocals: dead on, excellent as always. The band: great. Sounds like a pretty good blues album huh? Well, it's more than pretty good, it's amazing. On some of his later albums, great as they were, Muddy played less of his trademark slide guitar; well on this recording, it is the slide playing that steals the show. Muddy positively wails, putting most slide players to shame, dropping the jaws of the audience, and turning great recordings into postively essential and timeless ones. I cannot emphasize enough the greatness of the slide playing on this record; Muddy just takes you to another place with his scary slide.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the music and performance but DO NOT BUY
Here's why not to buy it: there is an expanded version containing the whole set of this concert with about twice as much tracks

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't get enough?
For all those who dig this album--or are thinking of picking it up--look for the 2 disc special edition.
