5-0 out of 5 stars closest to the real thing...
As great as Fishbone's studio albums are, this is one act that has always thrived and amazed live, where their character can shine in full effect. After all how could a mere stereo audio recording do justice to the full-frontal assault created by the beyond-colorful personalities of the dudes in Fishbone? So here we finally have a CD AND DVD together for one low price. The sound is awesome, just try it w/headphones (or those earbuds you probably use for everything..).AND you get to SEE the band putting it down live.Norwood, the killer bassist always said that they just tried to do what P-Funk said and "take it to the stage" and they do!You MUST check this out...and if you're new to Fishbone then I have mad envy for you.you're in for a great trip...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Indie-label Struggle
Fishbone are legendary...let me just begin by saying that. There were ranked most exciting live act by Dappa Like Zappa; They have influenced countless bands and hip-hop acts, befriended many more bands and such...i mean come on, its undeniable! After dealing with a bunch of garbage from Columbia, and dealing with legal whoas, and lack of promotion, they eventually moved to their own record label. Now this album was done through High Times Magazine and they simply didnt do the band justice! Dont get me wrong, its a great album, but thanks no thanks to High Times...the recording quality lacks and there are type-o's on the back cover...granted, being an indie band, their stuff is bound to be a bit ruff around the edges-and like i said, the album (especially teamed with the DVD) is still great...just not as great as it could've been....ah the whoas of independance.Furthermore, the DVD doesnt do justice to Fishbone's live performance...Fishbone is typically full of energy and motion, and on this DVD they're more layed back...but that is undoubtably do to the MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF POT BEING SMOKED BY EVERYONE!!!! BUT...the crowd shots are tight...there are people EVERYWHERE...and a dancing section in the front where some fans are gettin down and there's this person wearing a psychedelic light outfit...its great! AND in all the album/dvd combo is a great bye (but wouldnt be a good purchase for someone new to Fishbone).

5-0 out of 5 stars Stoned delight in the stoners' capital
No Fishbone fan can afford to be without this CD/DVD recording of what proved to be one of their last concerts - at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Last Creative Suicide Machines Album
Let me just start out by saying that I've been a huge Suicide Machines fan since Destruction first came out in '96 I think it was.On their fourth release here, it is starting to become obvious that they are losing their creative edge; not completely though. There are 4 or 5 really good songs on the cd but the rest are mainly mediocre.
4-0 out of 5 stars great album! probally gets the most playtime of all my SM albums!
destruction by definition was my first SM album...i played it so much until i bought war profiteering and pretty much got equal play...and then went on to buy battle hymns, this one, and match and gasoline.
4-0 out of 5 stars You do know it exists right? ( 4.5 stars )
It seems as if nobody knows about this album. That's a shame, because this CD has the biggest selection of diverse music by the Suicide Machines. It starts out with "The Killing Blow" and the title track, which have sort of an epic feel. It then moves on to "Honor among Thieves" and "It's the End of the World as we Know It ( And I Feel Fine )" which are more alternative rock. "Bleeding Heart" and "The Air we Breathe" could probably be described as light grunge/punk. The next three track, "Stand Up", "Off the Cuff", and "Middle Way" all have their own individual vibes. Finally, the album ends with the last four tracks slowly fading off into "Leap of Faith" 's very last notes. Straight up, just get it, you will be listening to it for years to come. Thank you for your time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 1990s Best Ska Album
I heard Hepcat's first release during the Ska revival that plagued MTV and pop-radio during the late 1990s, when people were force fed crap like Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake, being told how those bands were playing a type of Jamaican music made popular in the 1970s by British bands like The Specials and Madness.Man, comparing that Circus-Music to anything of the 2-Tone era is insulting enough, but putting it in the same category as classic Jamaican Ska and Reggae pioneers like Desmond Dekker (King of the Ska), Laurel Aitken (Godfather of Ska), and the Skatalites ('nuff said...) is an insult to those legends!Luckily, the Ska revival also brought forth bands of such respectability as The Slackers from New York and Hepcat from Southern California.Hepcat, since hearing this album (originally released on the now dead MoonSka NYC lable), has been my favorite ska band, ever! This album still stands as a testament to the vocal talents of Greg Lee and Alex Desert and the early songwriting talents of David Hillyard, who went along to join The Slackers. The group takes its cues not just from Jamaican music legends, but also American Jazz legends, paying tribute to the likes of Duke Ellington in thier music. One of the most soulful, beautiful, and dynamic albums I've ever heard, it is a must for anyone who loves Ska, and especially for Hepcat fans who were never able to find this album, as the MoonSka version (which I'm lucky enough to have a copy of) has been long out of print.Do yourself a favor--BUY THIS! The fact that you're reading this review shows you got taste...now prove it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a CLASSIC, rereleased
This album is one of the greatest traditional ska albums ever. It came out once long ago, but the label they were on folded and it became unavailable. If you like any traditional ska, if you like hepcat, SHlT, if you like music in general, this is a great album. Many of today's 'traditional' bands do not retain the moody flavor of O.G. ska straight offa the island. Man, I paid 200$ for a plane ticket to see these guys, which was 10$ at the door. Also, Hepcat broke up, formed Dubcat with Long Beach Dub Allstars, then got back together again because of all the fans' heartbreak. So do em the honor of buying this, who knows it could be the last chance (again) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Bosstones CD.
This is one of my favorite Bosstones cds. Songs like Someday I Suppose and Simmer Down are what I listen to the Bosstones for. I was underwhelmed with the amount of tracks on the cd, but I did pick it up for 1.49 at a used Cd shop. I didn't think that it was quite as good as Lets Face It, (my favorite album by them) but it was a great CD and was worth more than $1.49, and the amazon price of 5.99. If you like the Bosstones, or just Ska in general, this is a good CD to buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little number, but don't pay too much for it
Simply put, if you like other Bosstones stuff, you'll definitely like this album.Someday I suppose is a fun tune to start it off, and Think Again, Lights Out, and Police Beat, none of them very long, are harder rockin' songs.

After a four-year hiatus, perennial party band Fishbone return with their distinctive, ultra-energetic, and soulful blend of funk, ska, and punk intact. While like-minded Cali combos such as No Doubt and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have gone on to fame and fortune, Fishbone have remained too much a well-kept secret. However, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Took a while
This one took a while to grow on me, but I soon found myself working at the office and doing Walt's "Shaky Ground, Yeah..." under my breath. This is certainly a more mature Fishbone musically, and they show it by dabbling in many different genres...
5-0 out of 5 stars Didn't like it at first, than adjusted and love the cd!
The first initial time I listened to the CD, I really didn't like it, because it lacked the 'fishbone' sound I really liked on the first few cds; however, the more I listened to it and gave it a chance, sometimes the first time listening doesn't do any justice, which seems to be the case with a lot of the more negative reviews. Now I listen to it as much as the original fishbone cd, every day.Good disc!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Old fishbone blues
The old fishbone will never be back, but the new fishbone is pretty good. They will always miss Chris dowd and Kendall Jones. The new members are pretty good. Spacey T seems to be more in the vein of John Bingham than kendall jones. there are plenty of highlights on this album, especially Karma Tsunami. Angelo is in top form here, but the days of Reality of my Surroundings and Give a Monkey a brain seem to be gone. It is not their best album, but it is not their worse either. The reggae influence seems to be stronger than on other albums. Even an O.K. Fishbone is way better than most popular music. it would be wonderful if any of the departed members would come back to Fishbone. But no mattter their future they deserve to have a platinum album sometime in their career. Like Madness, Fishbone is one of the most underrated bands ever. Though nowhere near as good as their last two Columbia albums, it is still a good and innovative album, but ait could use a strong melodic influence ala Everyday Sunshine, Movement in the Light or Unyielding Conditioning. But some cuts come close to evincing the deep soulful funkiness of Lemon meringue. Still a very worthwhile addition to your Fishbone collection and an approachable starting place for the novice. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A diamond in the rough that is ska-core... and hey, Krillin's on the cover.
Going back to my high school days, I used to love this album, and somehow it crossed the nation from its California home to my Alabama one and changed the way I looked at horn sections in punk bands. I then went from one ska band to the other, this was 1996, and then it blew up that summer, with Reel Big Fish and the Bosstones getting airplay on MTV. Then every hack in hacksville loved ska, but no one ever really picked up on this band. And now, looking back over a sea of music I have listened to and the styles of music I prefer now, this particular album, along with Let's Go Bowling's Mr. Twist, are the only ska constants I keep in rotation. I also noticed later that the bald character on the cover is none other than Krillin of Dragonball Z fame with a Saiya-jin suit on. That right there was ahead of the curb as Dragonball Z didn't catch on over here for another four years.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorite cd's

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Pietasters Completist
As one of the seminal bands of the 90's ska movement still doing it (only the Slackers and Toasters come immediately to mind as producing contemporaries), the Pietasters are deserving of the ska/alternative music fan's respect. While their biggest hit ("Out All Night" from 1996's Willis on Hell-Cat Records) is not included in this collection, some of their best-loved song are, including "Maggie Mae," "Girl, Take it Easy," "Drinking and Driving," and "Dollar Bill."
5-0 out of 5 stars Ska does not suck
OK, first of all, let me tell you that E. Stanchfield (see first review written) is an idiot. Ska isn't about being angry---ska is about having fun. I started listening to music like this several years ago and have not listened to any other genre since. I do not actually own this product, (I'm purchasing it soon) but know that the Pietasters are awesome, and anyone who insults them deserves to be deported to Guam. Now, of those of you looking to buy 1992-1996, let me tell you that it is a great buy. The Pietasters have great beats and melodies, and even if you like faster, ska/punk stuff, at least listen to this record. I guarantee that you'll like it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ska Sucks
These guys dont even play ska. These guys play bad reggae and they call it ska because they're white. These guys came to my college and were total tools. They showed up like 7 hours early and walked around campus looking for weed. Shouldn't a bad reggae band have their own bud? These guys are nerds. I got on stage when they were playing and they just stood there and looked at me. I even tried to give them high 5's and they didnt do anything. This was at a college field festival! I was wasted and had no shirt on and was covered in mud and beer. They should really lighten up if they're going to just play bad reggae that students kind of like when they're wasted. Come on now. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mighty Jackie Mitto
The man was truly a legend, as is made clear on this fabulous disc. Everyone a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite album!
Jackie Mitoo's CD 'King of Keyboard at Studio One' has got some plenty interesting songs on it. It blends a different variety of instruments throughout, but the majority of it sounds like a combination of classic soul and instrumental jazz. There is some sensational music to be found on 'King of Keyboard', particularly "Wall Street" and "Oboe." Just about all of the other songs on this album are a little short, but these two songs alone more than make up for that by providing just the right length while not being too dull at the same time. Although I wanted this album exclusively for "Wall Street", there are many other noteworthy titles here including "Reggae Rock", "Summer Breeze", "Drum Song", "Darker Shade of Black", and especially "Stereo Freeze." Those tracks are plenty of fun to listen to, also. The background instruments are executed in a way that delivers a surrealistic feel to the songs. Fortunately, 'King of Kingboard' does not suffer from the error of being too short or too long, but just right. It manages to provide just the right mixture between lengthy songs and short songs, which is ideal. The album features 15 songs that amount to a grand total of 58 minutes and 2 seconds. Therefore, I highly recommend Jackie Mittoo's 'King of Keyboard' to anyone with a penchant for jazz, classic soul, or a combination of various instruments.

5-0 out of 5 stars is this my favorit e cd?
I love this cd. I love ska and punk, but as a mother of two I like it to be not only clean but intelligent. Mustard Plug does not disappoint. Very smart. Very fun. Perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evildoers Beware!
This is an amazing ska cd by an amazing band. There music sounds awesome andthe horn parts are especially cool. I don't really have much more to say about this cd other than "buy it". In my opinion, it is the best "Mustard Plug" cd out of the four I know of (Yellow # 5, Big Daddy Multitude, & Pray for Mojo are the names of the other three).
2-0 out of 5 stars Please....
Not much to say about this one. People said it was good so I got it, it was clearly a disappointment. I'm not orginally a ska-fan, I'm more into hardcore and punk, but I got into ska anyway becouse of all the skatepunk bands that play ska, NOFX of course, but mostly Operation Ivy(not really skatepunk though). "Energy" is probably the best ska/skapunk album ever, but Choking Victim's "No Gods, No Managers" together with both records by Leftover Crack is up there too. As some of yuo will understand, I'm more into the superfast ska mixed with hardcore more than Mustard Plug's ska-pop. Couse this isn't ska-punk, or even pop-punk/ska. Without speed, ska tends to get kind of boring. I can see why fans of Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger could like this, although this is softer than even them. Let's face it, all thoose bands are ska-pop bands (or just pop bands in later years) and not ska-punk bands. The only ska/pop-punk records i can stand is the records by Less Than Jake before hey sold out and "Why Do They Rock So Hard" by Reel Big Fish becouse they still are catchy. But this band goes so far beyond the pop limit, that you loose the wanting to headbang and sing along at all. I would instead recommend Catch 22 ("Keasby Nights" the only good album), the great Mad Caddies and the poppy but still talented Big D And The Kids Table. Plus of course the earlier mentioned ones. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This two-CD compilation chronicles the urgent and early artistry of Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and of course, Bob Marley. These historic sessions, recorded at the legendary Studio One in Kingston, showcase the embryonic stage of the Wailers band, backed by the Skatalites, The Mighty Vikings, Rita Marley, Junior Braithwaite, and many of Jamaica's finest musicians.Even on these old discs, Marley steals the show with his riveting and revolutionary vocals, as evidenced by the pulsing, prehistoric renditions of "Simmer Down," "Hooligan Ska," and his anthem "One Love." Several unreleased tracks and alternate takes--like Marley and company's riff on the Beatles' "And I Love Her," and a rare rehearsal track, "Wages of Love"--reveal their stylistic range and work ethic. To put it in evolutionary terms, this collection traces reggae's musical and philosophical DNA down to its R&B, doo-wop, Rastafarian, ska, and rock steady roots. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Skapunk history lesson
Skapunkers Catch 22 are back with a concept album about the life and times of Leon Trotsky. It's a bizarre career turn for a band that's been accused of releasing flat and uncatchy albums of late.Instead of reminding fans why they should still care, Catch puts out a Noam-Chomsky-readin', Che-Guevara-shirt-wearin', oh-so-brainy history lesson set to music. The vocals are horrendous, but as far as concept albums on Leon Trotsky go, the music isn't bad. They pull it off with a good amount of upbeat horns and beats ("Opportunity" being a great standout). I'm impressed by the ambition, and the execution is surprisingly decent, but in the end I don't listen to Catch 22 to be lectured about socialism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
Of course, its not as good as Keasbey Nights, but everyone needs to realize that they are way different now and will never sound like Keasbey Nights again. Definetly better than Dinosaur Sounds, but still not as good as Alone In a Crowd. Well I'll do the thing that a lot of other people do and rate each song.
4-0 out of 5 stars C22 finally develops their own sound
I had almost given up on Catch 22. I don't really need to go into the history of the band, suffice to say I thought Alone in a Crowd was merely an attempt to recreate the glory that was Keasby Nights, and Dinosaur Sounds was simply bad. Bafflingly bad. It seems the guys of C22 finally got the hint. Instead of trying to live up to the hype of "the band that released Keasby Nights" they finally take a bold step and try going in a new direction. That direction, much to my surprise, actually works.

The Bay Area's Dance Hall Crashers were originally founded as a ska band and side project by Rancid members Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman, but the group evolved through several permutations into a pop-punk band with no Rancid members. The Dance Hall Crashers' major-label debut, Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars um.......ya
So I have been listening to the dance hall crashers since I was like 14 which was like 9-10 years ago.I bought this cd a a local record shop back then and I fell in love.I haven't listened to them for a few years even though I still have all of their cds, but I thought it would be important to share that this band absolutely is cool. The ladies are beautiful, and in concert they rock.So if any teeny bopper wanna be punk jerk decides that he or she should think otherwise than you are not punk...you are not ska punk...and you should not give advice to any more amazon users.thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a shocker...
I found this CD in a bunch of burned CDs a friend was throwing away.It was the first one I picked up, and I let her keep the rest. After I found out who exactly I was listening to I rushed to buy the real CD.The entire Lockjaw album is upbeat and catchy, and is one you can listen to over and over. The harmonies are fun, and the band builds a solid backbone behind the girly duo.Pay special attention to the song GO- it's my personal favorite, and a good starting point for anyone looking to love DHC.

1-0 out of 5 stars no...
I won't get into a negative review like I'd do for the Backstreet Boys or *N'Sync, but still, DHC isn't what you'd call a good punk band (in my opinion). I admit, I like Buck-O-Nine. I like Green Day. And believe it or not, I LOVE Rancid! I've even started wearing a Tim Armstrong-like mowhawk! But as for the Dance Hall Crashers, no. The song "Sticky" has the strangest lyrics ("Take the knife out of my back/clean the blade and put it back"). even a Slayer fan like me finds that weird, probably because it's being sung by a chick. The 2 girls definetly aren't fun to look at either. They're both extremely pail with dark red lipstick. Real female punk is Joan Jett, The Donnas, Patti Smith, you know, singing about rock & roll and boys and pissing and stuff and not songs about other girls with mental problems. To me, DHC's style has nothing to do with real punk. Now, since I like punk, even ska punk, I hope DHC sells well, but I wouldn't bother buying one of their albums. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Though the Suicide Machines are far more punk (and pop) than ska, they nonetheless manage to fit in some infectious ska rhythms. They're a Detroit quartet with piercings in all the right places (pretty much all over their faces), big baggy clothes, and a knack for writing fun-filled, power-packed ditties. They're also a hell of a lot of fun. At a Seattle gig (at Eckstein Middle School, of all places), they invited about half the crowd to join them on stage and performed the entire gig surrounded by (mostly) teenage boys skanking up a storm. Truly a spectacle to behold.Their debut record on the Hollywood label has much of that same wackiness. The songs are totally adrenalized, manic spasms of poppy punk, jazzed up with some deliriously danceable ska. The best line of the entire album comes in the fashion-tip-laden "The Vans Song", which advises, "Worship Jeff Spicoli, not Chris Cornell." Get the picture? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars RIP Suicide Machines
I am kicking myself for just now getting into this album. It has honestly been around me since it first came out, but I am just now realizing the brilliance within. I recently heard the title track off of their latest album, war profiteering..., and was amazed. It was it this time I decided to revisit the back catalog. Well in the process of a couple weeks I have discovered this album to be so much more than I ever imagined. As a previous reviewer stated they have such a great and seemless mix of straight ahead punk blended with ska, and the catchy choruses and great sing alongs that could have come from a classic Misfits album. It's almost like the greatest mix tape of punk ever made. If you enjoy anything from ska, to hardcore, to classic punk you have to give this late, great band your hard earned cash. Even if it takes awhile to absorb you will one day get it. I know I will be buying anything I can get my hands on, these guys will be remembered as legends.

4-0 out of 5 stars to me, all suicide machines albums are equal
well i see people saying this is their best all the time, but to me, i just cannot decide. they all have superb and amazing moments and others that just blend together. i havent listened to a single suicide machines album that i could listen to all the way through.(i have all except self titled) i mean yes, they are a great band and id definately say that they are an essential to any punk revival fan, but the thing is, is that they never had a cd that was 100% masterpiece..to me at least.
5-0 out of 5 stars TSM's first and best.
Let me begin by saying that The Suicide Machines were my favorite band, even though they broke up not too long ago. This, however, is not the album that turned me on to these guys. But it sure is one hell of a CD. Out of its 16 songs, I enjoy all of them thoroughly, because they are all different. Of course, this CD may just all be about teenagers having fun early in their career, but The Suicide Machines make great music out of it, not to mention the organ thrown in. I often try to highlight my favorites of the disc at hand, but this is another one of those cases where it would just be too difficult, every track is killer! Regardless of its genre, this is just music at its finest. So go out and get it, pop it in your stereo, and please your ears with the fun party of an album that it is. Thank you for your time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Album
I think this is the best Good Charlotte album ever. I love the entire album. It is their best album that was ever recorded. This shows some good punk music. Well worth the money

3-0 out of 5 stars It's not horrible, but not great either
Little Things: This song is pretty good but not one of the best on this CD. It's kind of your token song about teenage years. 3/5 4-0 out of 5 stars A good solid album!
Even though I got this album almost a year ago, I still listen to it every once in a while.Only because I listen to my recent cds more. But I have to say this cd is very solid.I actually got theyoung and the hopeless before this one thinking that was the 1st cd, but I was wrong.I actually like this one more than young and the hopeless.Yeah I do have all 3 (including chronicles ), and this is definetly the most memorable to me, because of a couple of songs to me, and ofcourse it is their first album right (not including the ep)?Well anyone who has bought the the latest of charlotte 2 and 3, I do recommend you to get this one.Its thte only way to complete it, and it does have more punk in it then 2 and 3 which isn't so bad. I don't actually have this one, I have the bonus one with the Thank you mom one.But I know its still the same. So anyway, I'm gonna rate the songs now!

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant?
A vaguely uneven but enjoyable album perked with two of the greatest bizarre pop tunes I've ever encountered in a very long career of encountering bizarre pop tunes--Tiny Pants and Canis Lupus. If the whole album had been at the level set by that pair this could've been in the Top 100 Hall of Fame.

5-0 out of 5 stars truth is a harsh mistress.
if someone tells you this albums is anything less of amazing, punch them in the face and call them a liar. i can honestly say this is the best album of all time. people that dislike this album or think its mediocre are bad people. they are people who dislike amazing things and love bad things. so basically if you buy this album and enjoy you are a good human being and have a soul. but if you dont buy this album or do buy it and think it is horrible you are in with the group of bad people that don't deserve to hear great things or possibly even live.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey kids, what do we got?!
Don't listen to any kids who say "Fashion Zombies!" is The Aquabats' best song. Just tune them out immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars good
This is a great compilation. Disc 1 is early reggae (1970-1974), mostly instrumentals, pretty rare tracks too. Stand out tracks are 'Kaya' by Bob Marley (produced by Lee Perry) and 'Half Ounce' by Big Youth, which is a dub of the rockfort rock rhythm.4-0 out of 5 stars laid back
this cd is good for background music.the beats are simple and soothing.some of the songs have some singing over it.everyone song is about smoking.it's just a good laid back cd, a good cd to listen when your hanging out.i actually enjoy it. ... Read more
