3-0 out of 5 stars Catch 22
This album just isnt the same as Keasbey nights. It seems that songs aren't as catchy or as good as mostly every song on Keasbey Nights. Its still an allright follow up to their debut album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a great CD
Ska/Ska-core/Ska-punk, whatever the hell it is called, this is an incredible cd.Not necessarily my "type" of music, but a CD this good can be enjoyed by more than just ska fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent followup album, possibly superior to the debut.
Deftly avoiding the sophomore jinx, a restructured Catch 22 (sans original members Jamie Egan, Tomas Kalnoky, and Josh Ansley, adding bassist Pat Kays, guitarist Pat Calpin, horn player Mike Soprano, and Jeff Anderson on vocals) returns to the ska-punk sound that made 1997's "Keasbey Nights" a standout.

Editorial Review

Punk rock has long been known for its short, loud, and snotty anthems, but this is taking things to extremes. None of the songs found here reaches the one-minute mark. Some are among punk's most esteemed anthems, while others are casual additions to the canon. In either case, even if you don't like one tune, well, there's another one coming in just a few seconds. This isn't the best introduction to these bands. The Descendents, for example, are punk-pop titans who and not at their best when aping the hardcore set. However, where else can you find Less Than Jake, Nerf Herder, Blink 182, Green Day, the Mr. T. Experience, Gwar, the Circle Jerks,D.O.A., Agnostic Front, and the Muffs all on one CD? There's no shortage of top-shelf names here, and more than a few surprises will keep you hopping. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Infectious!
The first listen you will be unimpressed. The second you will be intrigued. The third, you won't be able to get these 30 second songs out of your head! This CD is fun, in a decade when music takes itself way to seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars hot shelf
Okay guys, this cd is awesome, I heard that there was a super rare vinyl pressing of this, but I mean, is that for real?Anyways, yeah you should buy this cd, it's kinda wierd saying this, but it sounds... dated.Yeah I know it's only seven years since this came back and most of this bands are still around (and putting out some lame albums) but even the bad bands seem to put some good songs on this joint! No joke.I can listen to the whole thing through and through cause it has shoit songs... I don't see why you wouldn't get it, I mean it's a classic comp, I wish there'd be more like it, you know like an updated thingee.Oh yeah the Ataris song is suprising to my liking, it's all about those lame bands that the radio STILL plays even though it's been like (oh eight or so) many years since that song was written.Blah blah blah... anyways, I think fat wreck should put out short music volume 2, I mean what is wrong with that, it must have been hell getting this together though, I don't doubt em for not doing it again...

4-0 out of 5 stars good but it leaves you wanting more...
The cd has alot of good songs, but they are not enough to get a true sense of each bands particular style. So even if you like a band's thirty seccond teaser, you may not like that band's other music. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Might as well get this one too...
If you loved the first 4 Boot CDs like I did, you should get this as well.Great collection of street punk, psychobilly, skacore and reggae.

4-0 out of 5 stars another good compilation from Hellcat
Hellcat Records is definantly my favorite record label and I like, probably, most of the bands His label has produced. With that being said, this compilation is good, though I liked Give 'Em The Boot III and IV better.Either way if you like good punk and especially if you're new to the Hellcat label, there is no better way to dive in than to get these compilations, though I wouldn't recommend this one first off.
3-0 out of 5 stars No reason to buy this if you know the bands already
I personally have no reason to buy this cd because I know and like most of the bands on this comp already. There is no denying the quality of this music--hellcat bands are always great as they are hand picked by mr. armstrong himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bedouin Soundclash
The soundclash has come a long way from their debut album "Rootfire" which was more soft rock driven then "Sounding A Mosaic". Thats not to say that it wasn't dripping with reggae though... Because it was. Anyway, im excited to see what they bring to the table on their next album "Street Gospels" which is due to come out late 2005 or early 2006. I'm excited to see if the album incorporates more of what the name suggests... gospel. For the time being they will be engaged in Vans Warped Tour. Also, at music.yahoo.com Bedouin has been selected for yahoo musics "Who's Next" user's choice against three other bands so....do your part and vote as many times as you want. If they win the will do a yahoo exclusive interview and they will record a live preformance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bedouin Soundclash delivers!!!
The fellas from Bedouin Soundclash produce a sonic amalgam composed of equal parts rhythm, melody, and lyrical genius on their new album. They effectively deliver a series of lyrically rich tracks which satisfy their fans' ravenous musical appetite.Their sweet melodies leave once-starved listeners satisfied and searching for more of their "musical crack rock".Pengelly delivers delicious drum beats with a maturity and discipline reminiscent of a tibetan monk.Sinclair's thumping bass confronts the most passive listener and says "rise to the occasion or prepare for a hearty serving of sonic subordination, okay?".Finally, Malinowski's smooth vocals provide a lyrical adhesive like no other. In short, this album will knock you on your arse, place you in a musical chokehold, and then force you to confront many prevalent social issues. Are you ready? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Delicious
The Slackers are amazing musicians, and this album is probably my favorite of theirs on a collective level. If you are new to the Slackers, or ska in general, this album is a fantastic introduction."Cooking For Tommy" starts the album off with a danceable, instrumental track."Married Girl" is a classic and catchy Slackers song, and sexy "Soldier" follows it up."Rude and Reckless" is incredible, while "Come Back Baby" is a favorite love song of mine - acoustic, and just beautiful.Every song in between is great, as well.Again, these guys are just AMAZING.I recommend all of their material, expecially this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars timeless, classic ska
even though the slackers were around (before, during, and after) the horrid 3rd wave ska revolution, they are nothing like the skankin' pickle and save ferris mess of the mid 90's... they are one of the best bands i have ever heard. they are brilliant, and truly what ska was intended to evolve into. victor ruggerio has THE sexiest voice i have ever heard in my entire life. "married girl" is one of my all time favorite songs; it is a provocative, swooning ballad with amazing imagery and equally sexy music. "solider" is another one of my favorites; again the slackers demonstrate the ability to make a dark subject incredibly sexy. to sum it all up, this is a quote from my book in progress:"I had a past experience with The Slackers, the one and only ska band that I like, and one of my all time favorite local bands. (One of my favorite East Coast north of New Jersey bands to be exact - I'm a bit of a music fiend.)"

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this one
This is definately my favorite Slackers album. I have all of their music, seriously every album on both CD and vinyl, and I have to say without a doubt that Redlight is the best. If you are new to the Slackers, get this one. If you already have The Question or Better Late Than Never or any other one, GET THIS ONE TOO! The Slackers are one of the top five best bands ever!!!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MARLEY DUB
Marley tracks without Bob Marley singing, is what this CD is all about. If the listeners haven't been exposed to the dub sound it may not be for them. Overall, I enjoy the dub sound so it fits into the reggae that I listen to. Definitely cool out music to chill to. But nothing compares to singing and messages of Bob.

5-0 out of 5 stars let freedome ring
i really only respect a tribute if it has roots and i think that this one has roots.Chriss balckwell (bobs original producer and the owner of island records) and bill laswell were in kingston and chriss mentioned helping him to work on a marley translation project.and laswell not knowing bob personally he in true dub style which any one in dub mentallity would have done decided to take some of his most favorite songs and not just give you another bob compillation for you to breath new life into a soul not just glorify over and over again.what do you think dub is its just regge classics rut up retranslated reverbed delayed.. new life.imagine a phychadelic spirtual ambient dream relaxing listening to your regular marley it might turn into it naturally try it. only features marley in maybe 3 songs sparcelly and the original backround singers.all new mixes new instuments never heard before im marley tablas, new keyboards, cut ups, dense delays, dub

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm late to the party...
I remember ignoring this album when it was originally released because the thought of an ambient Marley record sounded lame. What a terrible mistake on my part! This CD just flattened me!There's a lot more going on than just a typical dub remix so some purists may not dig it, but if you appreciate ambient and good dub this is all you.I can't believe how well these songs work in this context (with the possible exception of No Woman No Cry; it's good but not great.)This is a sweet record to chill out to or to put on when you want the mood laid back.It sounds cool in the headphones but in a good system with big bass it really opens up.Bass players take heed: Aston "Family Man" Barrett will take you to school and in this dubbed out mix he's never been more up front.Listen and learn.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Talk about a revival (in both terms)!
No way did I would ever hear any music like this except for when I was around my grandpa in the car playing the old radio stations (which I have learned to love in the past 13 years of living with my grandparents). Just recently when I turned 15, me and my christian friend were driving home, and I popped one of his CD's that said the W's on it. I had never heard of them, but when my friend told me they were more of a swing band, I couldn't help but have a piqued interest. I thought, "Hey, it's christian music, what could I expect"
4-0 out of 5 stars I think im in love...
Wonderful CD... as Mike said up there theyre not ska, they're swing, but they're still very good if you like the style. I went to a DC talk concert, and ended up liking the W's more. The W's broke up in 2000 i think, which was a very very sad day. But good news for all you The W's fans, The lead singer, Andrew Schar, has a new band, called Alpha-Charlie. They're far from famous yet, and their style is a lot different, but they're still awesome. Visit them at www.alpha-charlie.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Genre-Defying Music
These guys don't seem to want to pick a genre. They transition easily from song to song from genre to genre. One song could be straight up ska, another a frenzy of prog rock, another smooth reggae, and another all three at the same time! This is the defining aspect of the album, variance. And it works very well. There's plenty of substance with very little filler. Not to mention the guitarwork and horn playing are phenomenal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy, addictive, amazing
Let me tell you a story. It goes New Year's eve totally smashed. Wake up at 630, never really going to bed still a little smashed.Go snowboarding at Mt. Baker high on ephedrain filled energy kickers.Best snowboard day of my life.Get stoned on the way down and somehow come across this album.I was wasted and just completely mystified trying to figure this music out.It cant be classified it just kicks ass.I remember vividly hearing this album for the first time.First time I ever heard the band.My freinds and I were totally in shock of how amazing this band was.We couldnt even desrcibe it.My budy had to pull over to puke, after he was done we just chilled and listed to this album on the side of the road and we were all blown away.It is still one of my top albums of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give it a Few Listens
Classification of this album is difficult. It's equal parts ska, punk, metal, dub, reggae, and God knows what else. But, Matt and the gang pull it off.At first, it might not come off as good as their previous album "Progress" (which if you don't smoke enormous amounts of pot, get first. You'll thank me later.)But, it grows on you. It's experimentation puts you off at first, but as you listen to it more and more, you come to appreciate the complexities of it.Soon, you'll realize what a masterpiece it is musically, and lyrically the brilliance of it.Once again, if your just getting into them start with "Progress" (Their first 2 albums were embarassingly bad, so don't even bother.) But get this soon after: you will never regret it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad band, bad CD
Lol. One of my favorite quotes by Jesse Swann (See above review): "These words mostly sound like they're from the secret diary of a 12-year old boy who is starting to 'feel funny'about girls and wants to relay all the fun little games and inner feelings he has for that certain girl of his dreams to somebody." I certainly agree with this. This band sucks. It is borderline, crappy ska that no one should purchase. However, it is borderline ska, so I have to give it two stars. One star is reserved for Green Day and rap. If you want to listen to ska, check out Ska Masta Skibz's lists. Those will help you get an idea of what good music is.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS ALBUM
If you like third wave ska, you'll like this album. Just a really really really really fun cd. The Hippos really know how make ska music to skank to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Fun Album
I can't say much about how this cd relates to other ska groups because I don't listen to very much ska.But I love this album.(Perhaps those two facts combined say something, I don't know.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Fishbone for the SOAD fan.
Out Of all the fishbone albums. This one is probably the Hardest, heaviest, angriest, album out of thier columbia albums, and thier most directly to the point out of all of them. Where all of the other kinda toyed around with you for awhileamoungst the message, this one is a full-on brutal assault, while still remaining far more eclectic, than most hard rock out there, and still maintaining traces of the funk, and ska they have been carrying with them. Though it is slightly more straitforward than Reality of my surroundings.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Who do YOU Serve?"
...First of all, I am a huge fan of Fishbone...or at least I WAS until Kendall Jones and Chris Dowd left and the band started releasing sub-par material left and right ("Give a Monkey a Brain" was their last great album, in my opinion). If you are not familiar with Fishbone, you may want to first purchase "Truth and Soul" and/or "In Your Face" (which are both fantastic albums and more "commercial" sounding than this one) before you dive into the heavy-duty nuttmeg of "Give a Monkey..."5-0 out of 5 stars Unassailable...!!!!
My fave Fishbone album. This one has it all- a seamless, and I mean seamless, blend of styles. I'm not talking Mr. Bungle mix of styles (not that it's a bad thing- far from it, long live the cult of Patton) I'm talking each song sounds like the pinacle of whatever genre Fishbone happen to inhabitting/shredding at that given moment.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Saviors of Punk
Times are tough for all the punks these days.Every crappy little SoCal band thinks they're political geniuses just cause they hate Bush, The Dead Kennedys turned into a parody, The Ramones are being used to market everything from cell phones to Pepsi, and the few good bands left are just making the same albums over and over again. So, in the new millenium, my hope hanged on two bands that were putting out genius music: McLusky and Propagandhi.Well, McLusky broke up, and Propagandhi turned into a metal band.Just when I seriously considered slitting my wrists and calling it quits, a friend of mine slips me an album by a band called Choking Victim. The front cover intrigued me, and when he told me that part of the album was a kind of death metal, I was sold.I quickly put it into rotation, and I was not disappointed. Not the greatest album, but still damn good. So, next he gives me Leftover Crack. Now, I had heard of these guys before, and after The Unseen and The Casualties, I wasn't interested in another "Street Punk" band. But, when he told me some of the same guys were in Choking Victim, I gave it a listen.
4-0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad, and the Leftover Crack
30% punk, 30% ska, 30% metal, and a 10% discount at your local record retailer. Leftover Crack may be eclectic, but the elements constructing their energetic crossover punk rock juxtapose as logically and naturally as caffeine and Mondays. Their songs are typically short and simple, but their variation (Classical interludes abound) and attitude more than compensate. Stza's vocals are, well, limited, so he resorts to a witchy shriek similar to any given black metal band. Stangely, this vocal style fits all the various musical elements Leftover Crack explores, due to the fact he tones the knife-gargling scream down to rough singing on less vicious songs. Some would call his vocals obnoxious, but I'm pretty sure that's intended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
Who said you had to agree with a bands views to enjoy their music? Think about that before you go endlessly bashing this band because of their political views and lyrics (which, agree or disagree with them, are quite good).

I loike most of thier songs on this cd. espicialy Diamond Light Boogie. others I Like Are/ God Is A Spider, Swingin' With Tiger Woods, Soul Cadillac, Irish Whisky & Bleeding Ceremony. Good Songs.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's a cyberdelic world of jet boys and tiger girls.
Although they were partially responsible for reviving the swing craze back in the late 90's, The Cherry Poppin' Daddies were versatile in their musical craftsmanship. The band's 2000 CD, "Soul Caddy," proves this. Instead of capitalizing on the hits of 1997's "Zoot Suit Riot," the group concocted a sonic cornucopia of many musical genres. "Swingin' with Tiger Woods" and "So Long Toots" are the only authentic swing tracks on the album, and both of them greatly glisten like a martini glass. "The Saddest Thing I Know" offers record buyers a sampling of smooth jazz. "Soul Cadillac," with its synthetic organ and sliding trumpets, is a carefree dance tune where frontman Steve Perry plays a 1950's teen heartthrob. "Stay, Don't Just Stay" also evokes the feel of that decade, for the track is set in a perfect suburban neighborhood complete with a dog and a white picket fence. "My Mistake" is an electric mix of techno, pop, and 1970's funk. The ska track, "End of the Night," is interesting; here, Perry is trying to reconnect with his estranged father, who he had first introduced as an abusive alcoholic in "Drunk Daddy." The infectious "Diamond Light Boogie" brings forth the futuristic, bubblegum groove of a sci-fi B-movie. "God is a Spider" is a bizarre and disturbing track about suicide; the song incorporates blaring trumpets with hard rock guitars, and the rhythm scurries like the legs of a centipede. "Grand Mal" is an offering of alternative, acoustic rock. The lyrics of this particular tune are absurd as they involve a girl who hears banjos when seeing her boyfriend naked. "Irish Whiskey" is a bittersweet punk anthem about friendship and sacrifice. "Bleeding Ceremony" is probably the strangest track of all. It graphically unveils the private pains of self-mutilation while teetering to the brink of full-blown nu metal. Fans who had become accustomed to the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' swing sound may be turned off by this track, since it seems far too radical for the band to travel this route. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good thing it costs less than six bucks....
And it't not even worth that. The Puke-O-Rama is terrible.Out of the 28 songs there are maybe three good ones. There are some ok bands on here, but they sure picked some crappy songs from those bands. This CD is filled with poser punks and a bunch of pop punk.Spend your money elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Best Punk Compilation Ever? I Beg To Differ!):<
Let's get one thing strait: I am deffidently not a punk hater, and DEFFIDENTLY not an mtv loser fan. In fact, punk rock is my favorite type of music. But I did not like punk o rama volume 5. I just did not find it cool, catchy, or even ok. It sucked. The only songs I really liked were the Pennywise song and the Vision song(which is about being close minded, and I don't like people who are close minded), and the Pulley song was okay, though the singer's voice annoys the heck outta me. The rest is bland, unoriginal, and annoying. Even the Rancid song was annoing. Yes, you heard me right. Everyone's so-called favorite punk band's song was annoying. At Borders, I had the choice between this and AFI's All Hollows E.P. I now know better than that. If you liked this CD, fine. Just remember to buy good punk CDs from bands like The Distillers, Misfits, The Ramones, Offspring, Rise Against, and early AFI, out of respect for good punk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Damn good punk, fewer pennies
There is something about good punk and this album has it. Crank it up to annoy the hip hop posers in mama's 'burban next to you at a red light. Anti social behaviors induced by playing this album are an intended side effect. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The astonishingly and presumably deliberately inept artwork of this debut from Californian skate punks OPM helps create a carefully contrived image of a bunch of lads intent on loafing about, doing as little as possible. The threesome's modus operandi--which involves sun, sex, tattoos, getting stoned, and traveling the streets on four small wheels--is cemented by the opening tracks "Stash Up" (a paean to smoking grass and not giving a flying one for anything) and "Heaven Is a Halfpipe" (a surprisingly catchy sing-along about the joys of skateboarding). 5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Genre
I'm 51 years old, and can't quite bring myself to love the rap genre, the only thing my son listens to.OPM is quite the refreshing change;Real drums playing great grooves.Happy songs, even if they, like their brethren, Kottonmouth kings, focus a bit much on drugs and alcohol, it is still lyrics that are friendlier than run of the mill hood rap.My favs on this CD are Capitan and Dealer man.All the others are good too.I'm hoping to work up a couple of these in my classic rock band, I know it will get em dancin'!

1-0 out of 5 stars kinda crappy
this cd is probably the worst cd of its genre i hated it. it sounded like the were tryin to hard to be original and have no talent

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Mix of Styles
Wonderful CD from start to finish. Starting with "Stash Up" you have an average rock song; go to songs like "Trucha" and "Unda" and you have something new. Trucha is a song with a latin feel but then kicks in with great hip-hop style lyrics. Then with "Unda" you get a cool ska feel. Then take 360 degrees back and listen to "Better Daze" and you have a song resembling that of Everlast. Even though it is a CD mixed with styles, they all seem to flow with each other and all have well written lyrics. A great CD that I would recommend to fans of rock, hip-hop, or punk; all will probably find this to their liking. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best Punk-O-Rama!
It has its high points, but some real stinkers contaminate it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the best Punk-o-Rama
This introduced me to the world of Epitaph punk. Good thing it was like 8 years ago instead of now because Epitaph sucks now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ya don't hafta be chokin to become a victim
As much as I love LoC, I have to say its really impossible for anything to compete with Choking Victim. Unlike LoC this is straight punk/ska no experimental death metal and stuff. This CD is so incredible its amazing. 500 Channels, Crack Rock Steady, Suicide, F--ked Reality, Hate Yer State, F--k America, War Story, and Five Finger Discount are the highlights of the album. The music is incredible and catchy and the scummy vocals work perfectly for this band. The lyrics are violent, nihilistic, and downright seditious which really seals the deal for me. 5 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Oxymoronic recording
Yes I am fully aware there will be lil' punk kids unhappy and vengeful when my 2 star rating brings down the overall score of a beloved nastypunk album that lots of lil' angry punk kids probably still love. I was thinking about the signifigance of this particular album this morning. I will explain my crummy rating, which I think is an accurate and deserving score for this oxymoronic album which for me bookendsan overblown era of music for that matter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Punk Album Ever!!!
I was first introduced to the music of choking victim a year or so ago when a girl i was dating at the time burned me a CD that had the song Crack Rock Steady on it. I fell in love immediatly with the ska-core beats and riffs that meld perfectly with the classic Hellcat records punk sound we all expect. Punk is about being free and standing up for what you believe in and that is what this CD does. My favorite song on the CD is 500 Channels. I totally reccomend this CD to anyone with half a breain stem to buy. I got this CD for christmas just recently, it was easily my favorinte present. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked it then
Before the popular song was on the radio I got this cd and went and watched them and sugar ray before they were anything, if smash mouthkept being a punk band they would rock they sold out hard core but this album minus walking on the sun realy does rock

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated CD's ever...
This Cd, when it was first released, was carried entirely by "Walkin' on the Sun" which doomed Smash Mouth to forever sing songs the same way, thinking that it would help their image. That's rather unfortunate because the other songs on this CD such as "Heave-Ho", "Padrino", and my personal favorite "Nervous in the Alley" have an entirely different sound and feel. This CD deserves a second glance so instead of just scoffing at it because it's smash mouth, listen to the samples. This is the only CD from Smash Mouth with and Explicit Lyrics sticker, because after this they went soft. This is good music, check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I could afford to, I'd buy this twice...
...and I heartily agree with the review below, some of the greatest reggae music ever made. And "Pressure Drop"is easily my single favorite reggae song ever, end of story (second would be "Uptown Top Ranking").
5-0 out of 5 stars The best reggae music there is.
Whether you're a reggae fan or not, you will enjoy this long awaited box set. This is simply the best Jamaican music you will find anywhere. It covers ska, rock steady, and early reggae hits by one of the islands top bands, Toots & the Maytals.Packed with hit after hit after hit, this set is sure to please, from early ska tunes like "It's You" and "My New Name" to the classic rock steady beat of "54-46 That's My Number" to the funky reggae beat of "Time Tough."
