Editorial Review

On their sophomore outing, the Long Beach Dub Allstars display accomplished musicianship and stoned enthusiasm as they create a unique blend of southern California reggae, dub, and punk rock. Rising from the ashes of the now-defunct Sublime, bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh lead this seven-piece groove ensemble with resolute determination. Featuring the good-time vocals of Opie Ortiz as well as an array of keyboards, turntables, saxophone, and percussion, the Allstars shift from traditional reggae to hard-edged ska-punk with graceful abandon. Including an appearance by reggae singer Barrington Levy on the Sublime cover "Saw Red" as well as cameos by rasta-punk hero H.R. and Jamaican toastmaster Tippa Irie, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not sublime but THATS OK
ok, for all you people saying that it sucks cuz its not sublime and bla bla bla...well. hm, maybe thats why they changed their damn name. if they were trying to make the same music as they did when they were sublime they would have kept the name. but they didnt cuz brad is gone, yeah that sucks, yes he was awesome but the rest of the homies gotta make a living so they kept goin on doin what they rock at doing. this cd is awesome, as is their next cd, buy that one too damn it.

4-0 out of 5 stars moving on
the band that was sublime is no more.these cats need to stop expecting long beach to be sublime- which is utterly hopeless.it is just different with brad gone.as much as we all miss him and wish he were here creating wonderful music, his passing must be accepted.long beach, as far as i know, doesn't claim to be sublime.it's evident in their music.they have progressed and really are still an excellent group.you can't hold them responsible for brad or hold them to that musical style.you can still feel a little of the old sublime with long beach, but they obviously will never be the same.well, enough about the past...right back is a really solid album.i really enjoy this album for what it is as any one must do.you will not like it if you can't accept that it's a new band, so be open minded.A must have for any collection and i find it to be extrordinarily good in the summer time

5-0 out of 5 stars sweet surf reggae
this album is awesome.if you like reggae/ska to surf to or just kick it, then get it.and if you want brad, then buy sublime.it's all sweet as pie.chill- ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Best CD EVER!!!!!!!
First of all, i'd like to start out saying that No Doubt is the best band ever, in my opinion. I have all their cd's and not even one can compare to the other. However, i have to say Return of Saturn is my fav. Each song has it's own unique quality and all of the songs are my fav. I also luv how the cd is so mellow and chilled, although there are a lot of emotions thrown in it. sometimes you want to cry, scream, shout, etc! and i luv how Gwen puts character into all of the songs. you can really feel the pain burning inside her in some of the more tragic love songs! not only are the songs amazingbut i feel i can relate to a lot of them! Magic's in the Makeup has really inspired me! as a girl in this world, it's sometimes really difficult to maintain a good self image. sometimes when im struggling with that i listen to that song b cuz i know i'm not alone and i can relate to everything Gwen says! I cant even describe how awesome the other songs are but i totally recomend it to anyone of any age!!

5-0 out of 5 stars "I shudder to be honest...."
This is one of the most beautiful No Doubt albums.
5-0 out of 5 stars ignore the detractors -- best ND album!
To this day, I can't believe this album hasn't been become a retroactive classic. It is the most musically sophisticated and complex, least vanilla, lyrically engaging, most contagious album of No Doubt's. Standouts are Simple Kind of Life, Bathwater, Artificial Sweetener, New, Too Late, Suspension without Suspense, Home Now, Dark Blue, but, frankly, almost all of the songs are artwork. Play it, you'll see! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Reggae albam you'll ever find!
It has two classic cd's put together and fits in with some of the best reggae artists ever such as Bob Marley, Sublime, and so on.

5-0 out of 5 stars great stuff
Classic Toots! This is as good as it gets from the old Jamaican reggae. Don't pass on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Toots is like a Jamaican Marvin Gaye and James Brown rolled into one. His voice is so real and every note is sung like his life depends on it. How you can listen to this album and not want to shake your a** is beyond me. It is virtually impossible to be sad and listen to this album at the same time. Always an uplifting experience even when he's singing about being broke or being in jail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome Sublime live CD
this is a must have album for a Sublime fan... you can feel the vibe as if you were there in the concert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live = Better
I wish I had a van. Vans are pretty cool. I mean...there's just so much room. And sure, they can't drag real well, but you don't drag in a van. You got subs, and room for gals. And if you're really classy you can get a couple of couches back there and a TV, and you can roll in it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sublime........................................
Ok.I'm a big Sublime fan.I have All their cd's but the acoustic one, but anyway, that's not the point.I'm a sucker for live records, and this one is one of thier best. There are a lot of bootleg live albums on the net, and they have their moments, but the sound quality is hard to handle cuz alot of them suck. This is a very good cd.It shows sublime in their true form: "three guys and a dalmation playing reggae and punk songs at parties for beer" to quote, incorrectly, but close enough, the liner notes of this cd.If you are a Sublime fan, get it.Otherwise get 40 oz. To Freedom and s/t.This is a good mix of songs from 40 oz. and Robbin' the Hood.Speaking of which, it does Robbin the Hood justice because they do actual full band versions of the home-produced 4-track songs that were usually just Brad by himself.Highlights include "New Thrash", "Don't Push", "Let's Go Get Stoned", "Greatest Hit's", "Date Rape", "STP", "Pool Shark" (which is a mix of the original and acoustic versions), and an early version of "Caress Me Down".Good Luck. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars christmas music that has the feeling
This cd is very good and should be in anybody collection

4-0 out of 5 stars If you're going to write new christmas stuff, you'd better be good at it or else stick to the classics
The artists who stuck to the classics always come out better on these albums. It is a dangerous thing to write a new one unless you can come up with something really significant. Sadly "Christmas Time" by Smashing Pumpkins is not. It's maudlin (meaning sickly sweet and whingey) and the words are worthless. "Christmas time is fun presents for everyone" Ohhh please. Perhaps Bob Geldof and Bono could teachsome wealthy rockstars that not everyone gets presents at Christmas and it ain't always fun for those whose families have difficulties or who are under persecution or war. Better to teach the real meaning of Christmas- that Christ was born to offer a new start to everyone. This makes every difficulty you are under fade and is a much better message than "presents for everyone".
4-0 out of 5 stars Third time's a charm.
I found many songs I like on the other "Very Special Christmas" albums, but front to back this is easily my favorite. Maybe because it includes alot of "adult-alternative" artists, but probably just because the songs are sooo good. Just look at the tracklist. Sting, Natalie Merchant, and Sheryl Crow all do great covers, and I also love the songs done by Tracy Chapman and Enya. As far as originals go, I was really impressed by the tracks from Smashing Pumpkins and Blues Traveler, both are excellent, and both sound very seasonal. My reason for purchase however was for "Ave Maria". Chris Cornell (Soundgarden/Audioslave) does an amazing job with it, and it's really quite moving. The rest is good at the least. As the holidays approach, I already can't wait to play this. I also suggest "The Edge Of Christmas" and "You Sleigh Me: Alternative Christmas Hits". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
If Catch-22's "Keasbey Nights" was sex, it would cause a huge orgasm. Not only is this the greatest ska album made in the last 10 years (if not more), but it even qualifies for one of the best rock albums mad in the past 10 years. It mixes fast punk, horns, reggea, dub, and just about everything else to make a great mix of greatness. If I could give it a million stars, I would.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Great ska album
Catch 22 really got me into ska with this album. It melodic, fast paced yet slow and groovy at times. The songs are just plain fun.I can't listen to this album without singing at the top of my lungs. Its a must have for any ska fan.

Editorial Review

The major-label debut from ska punks Save Ferris isn't exactly a classic, but it is a lot of fun. There's no middle-ground reaction to their cover of "Come On Eileen"; everyone seems to either love it or hate it. If you're in the latter group, skip it and listen to "The World Is New," "Superspy," "Goodbye," and "Little Differences." Save Ferris are at their best when they're up-tempo, and fortunately there are plenty of up-tempo songs on this album, peppered with catchy hooks, the requisite horns, and Monique Powell's considerable voice (one of Save Ferris's major strengths). While not fantastic, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ska/punk!
Still retains a sense of humor unlike all the emo/screamo bands that surfaced in the last few years.
5-0 out of 5 stars FIF...the king band of ska...
I just got into ska about a year ago when a friend from skewl introduced me to Five Iron Frenzy's "O Canada", which he had on his MP3 player. It got me hooked, that kind of silly humour just fit me so well. I wanted to hear more and I found out that they were a Christian band (awsome!) and that their style was ska. I cannot get enough of them and I am EXTREAMLY sad that they broke up about two years before I first heard them. I would have loved to have seen them live...even if it meant flying to Denver to see 'em (yes, they're that good). "O Canada" remains one of my faves, but "On Distant Shores" beats them all, with ingenious lyrics, music, passion for Jesus, and its all in ska style. Even if your not a big fan of ska and have never heard these guys before, you might want to consider them simply because they're fun to listen to and many of their creative songs convey their feelings of history ("Crazy Horse"), American culture ("Vultures"), Christianity ("On Distant Shores"), humour ("Pre-Ex-Girlfriend"), and themselves ((also funny) "At Least I'm Not Like All Those Other Old Guys"). I just don't see how you CAN'T like 'em!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing. There is Nothing like it
This CD is the best I have ever heard. It is far more than just music to me, and it's so sad that FIF had to break up.They will be so sorely missed.I won't go into details of the CD, I wouldn't do it justice.Buy this album! You won't be disappointed. ... Read more

This CD is awesome. This is what really established Less Than Jake in the public scene. This is a great album, full of catchy horns and just overall great ska. If U want Sublime's TRUE greatest hits, you need to pick up both "40 oz to freedom" & the self titled album!Otherwise, your settling for less...this album has a lot of classic sublime..but there is still more classic sh*t to be heard...just pick up the 2 records mentioned aND you'll be way more saticfied thaN With just buyin' this cut.

2-0 out of 5 stars yeah this isnt a good hits album...
all of the songs on this album are very good, however it doesn't live up to standards. sublimes a much better band than this album shows. if your a casual fan, i would not recomoned this to start. instead, i'd recomend "40 oz. to Freedom" thats my personal favorite Sublime album. it may not have all the hits on it, but is much better than robbin the hood and self-titled. great songs, terrible compilation

I think they put the wrong cd in the case because most of sublimes good stuff is missing.Weird.Buy 40oz to freedom or anything other than this cd if you do not already have them. It's has some good songs but false advertisement comes to mind.Hardcore sublimers may want it, but you never really have to open it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get this one !
The short-lived British Ska revival of the late 70's early 80's produced onlyone really great band. The Specials were indeed very special. We ALL need a little Specials in our lives. And if you buy only one Specials CD, this should be it. ( Their self titled debut album is great too, and should be your next Specials purchase, as it contians one song - "Little Bitch " - that SHOULD have been on this cd but isn't.) Serious, thought provoking and socially concious lyrics backed by some of the finest upbeat ska ever recorded. If you're looking for only one reason to get this cd, it's the 12" mix of Ghost Town, a spooky sounding dub reggae track with lyrics centering on the infighting amonst ska fans of different races that literally tore the movement apart. It was the last great Specials single, and the last to feature the original lineup, as they too would splinter shortly after its release. And all you English Beat fans out there who would argue against my point of the Specials being the only great ska band to come out of that period I offer my sincere apologies and can only say that inmy opinion they were a pop band who used Ska and Reggae as only part of their musical palette ( listen to the second and third albums by the English Beatand you will see I am right .)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Various 'Specials' Compilations.....!!!!
Possibly standing as one of the biggest and most creative artists, in the early 70's Ska/Revival scene.Combining elements of punk's energetic approach to music, with New Waves rousing & Exuberant arrangements, their music was as friendly for the dancefloor, as it was for listening at home. But what separated them from their peers and earmarked them and possibly the most crucial act in that musical scene, was the fact the amongst the party(ish) vibe of the music, their's was a manifesto that took not only a political stance, but also a social conscience that made their music that rare breed.Music that could move your feet to, but had something (useful) to say.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little Destructible
Rancid has never made a bad album. But this is not Rancid's best album.Everything is (as I'm sure you've heard) very poppy. And it continues Rancid's experimental style which makes them such a brilliant band. It's not my favorite album but other than that it's okay (thus the 3/5).

4-0 out of 5 stars get over it
reading some peoples reviews on various items (including this album) just makes me realize how incredibly quick people are to judge a band based on their actions and not their music. first off i'd like to point out that rancid never actually signed an official recording contract with warner brothers. THey simply signed a distro deal. but that's besides the point..any band (or any person for that matter) that trys to say that they wouldn't wanna as much money as they could for doing what they love they are liars trying to garnish "punk points". I actually really liked this record. YOU cannot deny that "red hot moon" and "tropical london" are incredibly catchy. yes this album does have a bit more poppier feel to it then their previous work. But, I think this album is such a refreshing sound after the dissapoint of 2000.plus there's a song on here about "django" (the movie not that fat "mc" from skinnerbox). Oh, one last note. I have never really understood why people criticize album covers when writing revues.

3-0 out of 5 stars Indestructible
Indestructible~ Rancid is an alright album but nothing more. The lyrics are simple and straightforward and there is nothing wrong with the vocals. Yet it sounds like a weak copy of the Clash and that is not a good thing. The cover is atrocious and looks quite shoddy. I hope they did not pay the album designer a ton of cash since the album design is a joke and a high-school kid could have come up with something more creative and had better drawing skills. The text inside the book-left is hard to read and over all it looks like a two dime project. Do not get me wrong, the album is not bad, but it is just and gets the 3 out of 5 stars that it deserves. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The firecrackers on the sleeve give a good idea of what to expect on this Florida ska-punk group's third major-label album after a brief sojourn back in the indie world. Horns, chugging guitars, and crashing rhythms mesh to create a high-energy racket that refuses to subside until the band has rolled out its raucous closing cover version of Cheap Trick's "Surrender." The label turbulence does little to affect its angular wit, as focus returns to the heady party vibes of the group's hugely successful major label debut, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth owning if you're a fan of the genre.
This is vintage Less Than Jake. Fun, slightly homogenous, but fun enough to make up for that for the most part. The new version of "Look What Happened", "Science of Selling Yourself Short" and their cover of "Surrender" are LTJ at their best. The album does kinda fade into a blur towards the middle, but snaps out of it with the decent "She's Gonna Break Soon" and the excellent "Brightest Bulb Has Burnt Out" There isnt anything quite as brilliantly simple yet easygoing and fun as "History of a Boring Town" or "Gainesville Rock City". But there's plenty here to add to the library. It isnt a highlight in their career, but far from a blemish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their best yet
Their maturity as songrwriters gets better and better with every album... None of their other albums quite compare to the songwriting talent displayed in this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Good Music!

4-0 out of 5 stars My First FIF Album
I borrowed this album off a friend who played a few tracks for me. I mostly hung around the opera bit which are hilarious! But then I started actualy listening to the songs. Every song on this album is fantastic! They are all in my favorites but this is my order.
5-0 out of 5 stars FIF rocks!
This is definitely their best album, so if you like ska or are intrigued with the idea, this is a great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best showcase of FIF's sound
It took Five Iron a while to figure out how to make good studio recordings, but I think this album is where they finally get it right. The energy and excitement from their live shows makes a strong showing on this album, with only a little studio degredation.Besides just being an excellent recording, some of FIF's best songs are on this album, namely One Girl Army, Dandelions, and Get Your Riot Gear.Overall, it's just an EP, but you get alot for your buck here: Good ska and a Christian band that gets it right. If you're new to FIF this is the place to start. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars best rancid album of all time!
to me, this is rancid's best work. i don't understand why people say it's "rough around the edges", and crap like that! this is punk people! anyways, every song is fast, and catchy - which to me makes it a classic. this album kicks off with "adina", (one of the best songs on this CD) which is a fast short song, with awesome guitar riffs. and after you hear that song...you definetely will wanna listen to the next - trust me. and the next song "hyena", is another one of the best songs, and an awesome chorus that's all yelling...every song has it's own thing that makes it good. one of the slower songs, has got to be "outta my mind". tim's singing is what makes this song a classic (to me). tim's guitar work, bret's drumming, and matt's bass playing are at their best on this album. so if you're new to rancid, i would HIGHLY recommend this. if not this, "let's go" is another good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars super rad album
This record is awesome. This was before Lars joined the bad, but Lint, Brett Reed and Matt Freeman were all in it.Matt sings a lot more in this album than Rancid's later albums (prolly because Lars is a better punk singer), so if you don't like Matt's voice you might not dig a couple songs.Overall: f'ing rad album.Go to Epitaph Record's website to listen to a couple of the tracks before you buy it, if you want.

    5-0 out of 5 stars LET'S GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, oh man! This record kicks the sh*t outta all those pussy Good Charlotte albums. It starts out with Adina, fast pumping and loud! This whole album rocks, though I still don't see what people have against Indestructable. Oh, well. If you like real punk, get this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent
my fav. english beat CD (and im a fairlly avid fan)
    5-0 out of 5 stars It's not "extra track-S"
Let's be clear."Too Nice to Talk To" is the extra track (singular).

4-0 out of 5 stars Their reggae album
After the wild hyperactive ska of their debut I Just Can't Stop It, The English Beat slowed down the tempo big time on the Wha'Ppen? album. Not that the band did a complete u-turn here musically, but it's a definitely a more subdued affair. While there aren't any tracks here as strong as "Mirror In The Bathroom", "Hands Off...She's Mine", or "Save It For Later", Wha'Ppen? is a more diverse affair and most of the songs here are very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much more than just "All Star"
Smash Mouth has made a great living kicking out a stream of radio friendly pop hits for the better part of 10 years.I've never really been a huge fan of mainstream or radio friendly music.I don't have a good reason, I'm usually drawn to lesser known artist or types of music that don't get huge airplay.
    4-0 out of 5 stars If you like Smashmouth, this cd {KICKS A**!}
This is the ulltimate Smashmouth cd! There's quite a few hits on it. Of course if you dont like Smashmouth......... Well then you wont buy it and you wouldnt be on this site. Anyway, the booklet inside the cover is really cool. I has a silver woman in a bikini, with like orange hair. Pretty freaky stuff. Anyway if you like Smashmouth get this FREAKING cd!
4-0 out of 5 stars A CD Influenced by Early Rock
The best thing about Smash Mouth is that, as much as they love music, they never take themselves too seriously.Their sound ranges from sixties party to contemporary pop, with a heavy influence of early rock. Their lyrics are often satiric or downright humorous, with undercurrents of more serious concerns.
