5-0 out of 5 stars ENERGY!
Just as on the cover of the record, ENERGY! Keyboards flyin', Saxs' flailin', jumpin', divin', spinnin', these brothas' never stand still! I saw them perform @ Roseland, NYC in 198??? I don't remember what year but I was frightened when I left the show. Eyes bugged out, 'fro discombobulated, couldn't walk straight. I should have called EMS on myself! My friend and I were both in high school when (I think it was) MTV played the video. Nope, sorry, it was Ralph McDaniels and Video Music Box. "Hey dude----What's Token"? ?(Modern Industry) was the song. They named lots of radio stations in the US. Great, energetic songs!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid EP. We need more music like this!
I've owed The Reality of My Surroundings a few years now (it has the best songs I've ever heard from a non-mainstream band), and have heard the hits off Truth & Soul. I went to buy that CD from the used record store down the street, but they didn't have it, so I got Fishbone's s/t album instead. I had heard "Party at Ground Zero" before, and I've even seen the music video (crazy footage of the band and friends wearing fish heads while anticipating a nuclear war). Anyway, I loved the song with the video, but it's too repetitive without something visual to accompany it. It's still a good song (along with the rest), but I like a prefer many of the others more. My favorites are "Modern Industry" (where Fishbone salute their local radio stations as well as foreign ones from Sweden), the cool and laid-back "Another Generation", and the very funny "Lyin' Ass Bitch" (at first, I didn't realize the lead on the song was female and thought it was Angelo playing around).

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic EP
Fishbone began their career correctly with this smoking EP."Ugly" is a good song, with the sophmoric lyrics that pop up at least a couple times per every Fishbone disc."Another Generation" is a good midtempo song which songs Fishbone's more serious side, "?" is a disposable novelty, "Party At Ground Zero" is a rock classic, truly a seriously great party song."V.T.T.L.T.F.D.G.F" is a good rock song, and "Lying" is a funny ska song to close things out. ... I loved this Cd soooo much. I bought it, and the next week, i took it to my friends house, and played it, a while later, i took it out of her stereo, and placed it upsidedown on her desk. BIG mistake!!! we then proceeded to light candles a such, when she knew she wasn't allowed to, then we had to smother the flmae, and the smoke went everywhere. then she sprayed perfume around the room, and it landed on my wonderful Destination unknown CD! I WAS SO MAD! She runined it, and I now have to go buy another one! But yes..as I was saying, awesome CD. Probably my favourite out of all of their Cd's, and i think they'll keep getting better!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pop Punk at its Best
Mest is definatley one of my favourite bands and all of thier albums are great. They are at the top of the list as far as the pop punk genre goes. The music is fast paced and extremely catchy. If you like Yellowcard, The Starting Line, Green Day, Good Charlotte, Blink 182 and New Found Glory then I recommend Mest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great SKA album
I've listened to lots of ska over the years and I would rate "My Town" as one of my top 10 ska songs of all time. It's as catchy a ska tune as they come...ranks right up there with the classics from the English Beat and with more modern stuff like Rancid.

1-0 out of 5 stars the singer sucks
i love the music that is being played but i cant stand the singers voice, its annoying, go listen to some ska with good singers in it

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a ska/punk person, but...
I really enjoyed this cd. being a trombone player I enjoyed the simple horn riffs, and its light enough for my liking unlike most hybrid ska/punk outfits. I like the vocals a lot although the lyrics are somewhat weak, and they don't overuse chord changes like most bands of this genre seem to. My friends that are in to 3rd wave ska seem to think this is a horrible cd, but this finds its way into my car's CD player all the time. The only reason this CD doesnt get a 5 is because "I'm the Man" (Track 5) is absolutely horrible and I skip over it every time I play the CD. I would definitely reccomend Twenty-Eight Teeth to people who aren't really into this style of music but are bored with their taste and want to try something new. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the last of the best
I picked this album up in early '98 towards the end of the third wave of ska run. This album along with Hard Band For Dead symbolize all that waa great about ska in the late 90's. Great tunes. I recommend that you pick up this CD and take a close listen to "Today's a good day". The best song on the album.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Ska Disc...
The Toasters seem to stumble on this release.Although they churn out a few catchy beats, the result is an album full of too much filler.Quite a shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars A smooth start
Big D's Asian Man debut is a landmark in punk/ska history. This is a band that not only embodies the DIY Ska lifestyle but also the spirit of the music. Good times is the staple message of Ska and Big D know that better than any other new Ska band. All the songs are bubbly, upbeat and relentlessly energetic. The band took the genre to new heights with this album by making a sound that is stylistically no different than most other bands of the genre but still manages to sound completely new and fresh. If it wasn't for the unabided enthusiasm of Dave McWayne and the rest of the band, the music would have faltered and been unfairly lumped with other bandwagon Ska bands. You can tell how much the Kid's Table love what they do simply by their lifestyle: one of homelessness and nonstop touring.
3-0 out of 5 stars Shame no one knows this band.
Said to be the poorest ska band around (poor as in no money, not talent) Big D make pretty damn good cds. Some of the songs are a little questionable, but the good songs definitly make up for it. Big D isn't going to change the world or re-invent ska or anything, but these guys are damn good at what they do. This cd is a must for ska fans. If you like this, you should also look at getting The Gypsy Hill e.p. or their new cd, which Amazon doesn't have as of now.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love five iron
this CD is in great condition. got here fast and all that. and of course its the greatest band in the world!

5-0 out of 5 stars not for beginners
This album is not for those new to the world of Five Iron Frenzy. The usual FIF elements are there, the brass section, Reese's vocals (let's face it no one sounds like Reese), the random silly songs. Yes, everything the FIF fan has come to love about the band. While past Five Iron projects have been more balanced between the serious songs and the silly songs, this album definitely leans more to the silly songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Got me hooked!
This cd is supposed to be only for fans. But the truth is, this is the cd that made me a fan. The songs are very catchy, and there is something for everyone. There is punk, metal, even a hint of Jazz thrown in. Not only are the songs great, but there are funny little 10 second recordings that make you laugh everytime. They are about grandmas, milk, and food. This is a cd you can listen to over and over again, because it never gets old, and it is always hilarious. If you love to laugh, and are a fan of great upbeat songs, then give this a try. You will be very happy you did. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The idea of two punk giants fighting it out in the studio was born on the hallowed 7-inch single, but these two summer-tour veterans and Epitaph labelmates have brought it to the modern age on the third installment of BYO's Split Series. Berkeley, California's Rancid bring attitude and tradition to the bill. Old-school oafs NOFX bring humor and frontman Fat Mike, a veritable underground punk legend and karaoke king. Like a medical experiment gone so wrong it's right, together they take on six of each other's songs and the results are riveting--whether it's Rancid mowing through mosh-pit standards like "Moron Brothers" and "Stickin' in My Eye," or NOFX finding the funny side of the cod-reggae Clash tribute "Radio" and triumphantly thrashing "Corazon de Oro." 5-0 out of 5 stars Just buy for Rancid
NOFX is an allright punk band, but in my opinion Rancid is a hell of alot better. Much better, and this album even proves it. Every song that Rancid covered rawked and every NOFX cover of Rancid sounded pathetic, almost like a mockery it was so so bad. Here's the fact, compared to Rancid, NOFX tremendously sucks donkey dong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only buy this if you like both bands
I love Rancid and like NOFX, and when I bought this album I loved NOFX and liked Rancid. The original versions of the songs are better, but these covers are good and really interesting. Don't Call Me White is better than the original, Rancid does it good and I don't like that song when its by NOFX. I I'm the One is probably the best song by NOFX compared to the original Rancid song. GET THIS ALBUM!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good album for big fans of both bands.
Some of the people reviewing this are being kind of stupid and looking at it wrong. The bands weren't trying to out-do each other or anything. It was all just for fun. Some guy said NOFX ruined the Rancid songs by changing the style too much.THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT!Of course it's not going to sound like it's "supposed to!"They wanted to do the other's song in their own style. What would be the fun in trying to make it sound the same as the original version?I think they both did a great job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Catchy as hell and super fun!
Before listening to "All The Hype" all I'd ever heard of FIF was 'When I Go Out' and the Pants rock opera from Quantity is Job 1. I checked All The Hype out on a whim and absolutely fell in love with the band through it all.
3-0 out of 5 stars Might have been good as a first attempt
Let me start out with a disclaimer: a lot of people love this album, and, musically it's sound. (no pun intended) FIFs constantly changing style missed me with this album, although "ugly day" was acceptable, it sounded much better on the live album...3-0 out of 5 stars Worst FIF album ever
This album came during a very difficult time for Five Iron Frenzy. One of their chief song writers left the group before songs for this album were written, and the various members of the band (all 8 of them) kind of traded off on song writing duties for this album. As a result, it lacks the unity in sound that a lot of their other albums had (Electric Boogaloo has the same failing, but not to the same extent). Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great music,
I have to agree with the previous reviewer and rolling stones on this one. It's nearly impossible not to tap your feet and bounce around to wonderful tracks like "Never Not Alone" and "Punk".They also mix in some nice slower tracks like "Friends Again", which displays their wide range of talents and ability to create different moods.I'm not even sure how to classify "It's Weird" which is just plain one of the coolest songs ever made. This may not have been their most popular album but it's far and away their best.Any fan of English Beat should like and enjoy this album. The only weak track in my opinion is "Big Bed", but that's just weak in comparison to how great the rest of this album is.I saw these guys live in San Diego back in 1995 and they were awesome, it's a real shame they didn't have more success with this album and continue to put out more.Definitely worth buying.Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A member of the underrated hall of fame!
General Public broke up after this 1995 album do it being considered a 'let down' for people expecting a 'better' come back from the British dynamic duo of Dave Wakeling and "Rankin'" Roger. It is instances like these where I distruss the public as well as the critics. The only other person who loved this album besides me was a critic from Rolling Stone who also gave it five stars, which means a classic. Every song on this album certainly sounds like a classic and the entire album will resonate in your brain even after the first listen. With it's catchy synthesiser and guitar riffs and melodic hooks, this would make for a masterpiece for those of you who a)liked the English Beat, Genral Public's former incarnation or b)genrally love the fusion of Reggea and Pop. With Roger's Jamaican-style rapping and Wakeling's romantic lead vocals, 'Rub It Better' is a must-have in your record collection. ... Read more

The first track is a great MMB track. The Bosstones have added their unique sound to the covers on the rest of the album. You will probably only enjoy these tracks if you are a big Bosstones fan.Either way, pickup the rest of their full length albums before getting this EP.

5-0 out of 5 stars GEAR!!!
This EP just... well... rocks!"Where'd You Go?" and "Do Something Crazy" are two of the Bosstones' best songs, but if that was all this had to offer, then you ALMOST might as well just pick up"More Noise..." and "Devil's Night Out" (two great CDs,BTB).But it's the three covers that make this EP great. If the cover of"Enter Sandman" doesn't display how phenomenal the rhythm sectionof this band is, then check out the speed metal cover of "SweetEmotion".(And if you don't find the concept of a speed metal coverof "Sweet Emotion" irresistable, maybe you should seek help.) And"Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" shows what Van Halen could have beenif they'd had an ounce of soul and rhythm to go with their technicalvirtuousity.Beyond just changing the tempos, they added lyrics (somehowlingly funny) and put together innovative arrangements to give the songsa very distinctive Bosstones edge.Of course, the two originals aredifferent than the album versions, too (I did say "ALMOST"earlier). Just buy this thing!

Less Than Jake, from my point of view, changed their style of music completely so that they will sell more albums. For whatever reason, people like to hear distorted guritars with a syncrnized bass, and a fast drum beat(as in this album)...mabe LTJ wasn't happy being an underground band...What they play "now", and what you consider "ska" is not ska.Hello Rockveiew, Losing Streak, now thats ska.it's not just the horns that categorizes a ska band!!!

    Editorial Review

The UK's ska-besotted Madness were one of the most consistently pleasing bands of the entire new wave era, yet a group who never seemed to break-up so much as fade away in a series of largely ill-fated reincarnations and partial revivals. But this joyous full band reunion presents a Madness who's lost none of its loose, loopy charm or potent musical chops in the ensuing decades. The product of a series of informal shows in their hometown of Camden, it's an album that revolves around an inviting, vintage r&b/pop covers conceit so logical it's surprising the band didn't attempt it the first time around. If choices like the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On" and Kinks' chestnut"Lola" don't seem to offer much promise at first glance, the band tackles them with such a giddy, irreverent sense of reinvention as to be irresistible. Desmond Dekker's "Israelites" and the instrumental "Dangermen Theme" become kitsch-happy delights, while a delicious reworking of the Blues Busters' "Shame and Scandal" ranks with the best of the band's infectious ‘80s oeuvre. I have been a Madness fan since the 80's and this CD is a gem! What was old is new again, eh?I love the upbeat ska grooves and my kids enjoy it too. Highly recommended--the boys have done good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mad Props to Madness
Granted I'm a huge fan of Madness to beginning with even to the point of spending a year or two of my college life on some madness mailing list and message board, however this album is totally solid. There aren't any flakes or half-done compositions, awesome old school reggae (no dancehall/dub) but with the occasional Madness twist and a 2005 update. I can't wait for a volume #2. Two Dekker songs and another Prince Buster song - great selections. "You'll lose a good thing" is along the lines of Hepcat - just awesome. Good job boys - come back to the East Coast USA! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars great at first, but slowly loses effect
i own all of the SM albums except the self-titled, and i must say that this one grows oldest the fast out of all of those albums i own. obviously, destruction by definition and battle hymns do the ska-core thing much better. steal this record was more of an experimental album, slower and breath of fresh air..match and some gasoline was a great hardcore album with dashes of ska, but this one is best described as a watered down version of the previous album save for a few gems(capitalist suicide and like 3 others at most)...or maybe ska and screaming just dont sound as good as they used to. anyways, theres much better out there and unless you breath suicide machines, stick with their old stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD, BUT NOT QUITE GREAT (BUT STILL PRETTY GOOD)
Yeah yeah, it is a little suspicious that all of a sudden the Suicide Machines got hardcore, but I actually applaud them. This album will alienate any teeny boppers wanna be rudies who have been clinging to TSM since their self-entitled album. Really its refreshing to see a band flatly turn down pop-punk commercial success when they could have easily achieved it.
4-0 out of 5 stars It is something new which is nice.
    Ah, The Suicide Machines....

5-0 out of 5 stars SHJ Rocks
Spring Heeled Jack is a great band that left way too soon. Since disbanding, their horn section has gone on to join legendary acts such as Less than Jake (Pete), Reel Big Fish (Tyler) and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Chris). This is one of my favorite albums ever. The songs "Jolene", and "Waiting and Watching" are unforgetable, argueablely two of the best ska songs EVER. Buy this album and stand in awe. Not to mension, the rest of the album's no slouch either, MCMLIX and Pop Song won't leave you disapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Break From The Normal
I am not a huge ska fan or really into the scene, but I think the album isunbelievable. From 1959 to Pop Song(Green) the album is tight. I just wishI got to see them play before they took their brake. A must have for anyself-repecting music fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music for all rock lovers!
It shows that SHJ USA really took a lot of timeto write their songs. There is a little bit of rock, ska, and soul. "Time" is a great song that you'll want to play at your graduation party with your friends."Pop Song (Green)" is the most original and different song that Iever heard. It won't be out of your CD player that much. If you like rock, ska, and soul you'll really love Spring Heeled Jack, USA "Songs fromSuburbia". ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible
the fisrt disc is sissy sounding people singing. the only good song is by go betty go. and the other disc is stupid screamo and spazoid stuff. what a waste of money!! :(

5-0 out of 5 stars Insanely Good
This 2 disc compilation of all aspects of alternative is a must-have for anyone that likes it. They managed not only to put ther best bands at the time (2004), on these discs, but they also scrounged up the very best songs. If there was one song that each of these bands would've played at the Grammys, (if the Grammys played alternative, which they don't) these would be it. Again it's all aspects of alternative. You have your general punk "Jersey", and then you have your emo "Lightweight Holiday" "Amber Pacific" and you also have your ska "Big D and the Kids Table" and you have your hardcore punk "From First to Last" and your 90's wave punk "The Casualties". If you love alternative theres nothing to not love about this. I bought this the first day it came to store and i still give it a good work-out in my cd player.

4-0 out of 5 stars You get to listen to a variety and learn what you do and dont like
Well first off when i bought this cd like over a year ago.. i was just a greenday and Blink-182 junkie. had been for like 3 years. Then i bought this cd hoping to find some new bands and slowly started getting into other Punk/Emo/Alternitive/Screamo bands.. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A large quantity of quality ska.
This really is a great deal. It's 4 16-track discs of killer ska from some classic bands, and at a good price. This is the real deal too, it's not what passes for ska today (Reel Big Fish), but the good stuff from the 70's and 80's. It's the best collection I've seen since the "Max The Dog Says, Do The Ska" album. If you're into groups like "Judge Dread", "The Hotknives", "The Riffs", "Natural Rhythm", and "Bad Manners", then this set was made for you. Also, one of the discs is all live.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
This is the best collection I've seen too lock in a strong collection of 2nd Wave Ska. It's all strong stuff. The draw back is if you alreadly own a lot of varity Ska CD's your going to get a LOT of duplication. I figure Ialreadly have 1/3 to 1/2 the tracks on this collection in other Ska CD suchas Ska-ville UK, SKAndalous, Dance Craze, Ska Down with Her and Runin Nakedthru the Cornfield. Not to mention the orginal albums. But at the price whocan knock 64 tracks and close to 4 hours of skanking Ska. This is your bestbuy if your new to Ska and not a bad buy if your a serious collector. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LTJ at its best
I've been listening to less than jake for like 6 years now, they've been my favorite band ever since and this is in my opinion is the best record they have ever made, don't get me wrong less than jake has never put out a record i that i could'nt listen to straight through or that wasn't incredible with the exception of "goodbye blue and white" which had about 4 good songs on it and was pretty much a waste of a record. This record was a lot like a rebirth of less than jake into a more rock style of music and not the ska that they had been doing for quite sometime. This record was also the begining of Vinnie's lyrics becoming more personal and more meaningful that ever before. The record features some of the best songs ever written by less than jake, Look What Happened-best song ever written by LTJ adn this version is a 1000 times better than the "anthem(another incredible record)" version, due to the fact that the whole instrumental intro is taken out on anthem when live LTJ still plays this version, ganieseville rock city and last hour of the last day of work are also 2 of the best LTJ songs out there if your really into alternative music buy this record, if you are in need of a cd that will really make your day buy anthem, if your just starting to get into LTJ i'd recommand this record or "hello rockview" and then anthem and in with the out crowd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Album
This album contains a lot of my favorite Less Than Jake songs, Gainesville Rock city, Look What Happened, Magnetic North, among others. Overall it has a great sound. The horns are awesome, there is some really cool guitar, and vocals/lyrics are great. This album is most definitely worth the money, it will keep you dancing for years.

    5-0 out of 5 stars LTJ's Best
Actually, I'm 16, but I don't want too log in.Anyway, yes this CD is less ska than previous efforts, but I still like it the best. This pop-punk sound works really well for them.Yes, there aren't as many horn parts, but I wouldn't want horns to appear just as filler, only when the song needs them (okay, I do think the awesome guitar leads on Kenhoe and Pete Jackson is Getting Married should have been done with horns, but they are still good). As the reviewer below me said, J.R. admitted that their next album will have only 6 songs out of 12.That isn't quite correct (it's worse-for him). They are recording 15-20 songs for In With the Out Crowd (next album, due March 2006), and only 6 have horn parts, but a couple of them might be cut (12 songs were cut from the Anthem sessions, remember?).But I don't care.It will still kick rear. But I'm getting sidetracked.here is a summary of the tracks (@ indicates ska song, % indictates "hornless" song, to be helpful.(C) indicates Chris-sung song, (R) indicates Roger-sung song).

5-0 out of 5 stars poor man cry out to his god, he's dying and hungry
I love ska, it is my favorite kind of music. And the mad caddies are easily my second or third favorite ska band. they use more horns than most third wave ska bands do, almost enough to call them 2 tone. "one shot" "monkeys" and "popcorn" are definitely my favorite tracks on the album, "one shot" is an amazing song, it's about 3 times the length of an average ska song, and really slow, really chill, a perfect recipe for some serious skankin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good!
ive never really been a huge fan of ska but its always fun to listen to it every now and then. my frind told me that these guys were good so i went to best buy and bought this one because it was the only one in stock. i was surprised that the songs were so good. tottally worth it and the songs get you happy no matter what! my favorite track right now i Macho Nachos. buy it, its tottally worth it!

3-0 out of 5 stars It gets old REAL quick
I liked this CD a lot at first, but as I listened to more and moremusic of the same genre, it really couldn't compare. I can never, tell what the lead singer is saying, but I don't mind that so much. It's just that the tunes aren't super catchy. What I do really like about this CD however is the creativity. The Mad Caddies can play just about ANY style of music. It's fun at first, it's just that the sound isn't as professional. The base line is also weak, which I think has a lot to do with my distaste for it. One thing I love about most ska bands is a strong base line, something this CD lacks. Other than that though, this CD has some interesting tunes. It's jsut not all it's cracked up to be. ... Read more
