5-0 out of 5 stars Emily Dickinson reincarnated
This is one of those incredibly under-appreciated albums that shows that true art and poetry are still being created.Suzanne proves that love songs can be incredibly mysterious with the use of strange settings and metaphors."Honeymoon Suite" has a haunting tone, which is so rare in more recent pop music."World Before Columbus" is my personal favorite (and one of my all-time favorite songs). With wonderful metaphors, it deals with everything from world history and greed to love and a desire to live and feel more deeply.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great follow-up to 99.9F
After 99.9F, which I consider her greatest CD, I wondered how Suzanne could pull off another spectacular record. She did it with this one. It's reminiscent of 99.9F, but not as industrial sounding. The rhythms here are a little more interesting and FINALLY we hear songs that are obviously about her own perspective (e.g., Birthday, Honeymoon Suite, World Before Columbus). Her lyrics on this one are no longer mysterious and open to multiple interpretations. There are a few missteps, however, and this album has the distinction of containing the only Suzanne Vega song I hate: Lolita. What was she thinking? Also, Casual Match has a decent verse, but the chorus is completely unaffecting. Otherwise, this is one great CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caramel!
I love this CD! It's great when your relaxing at home with a cup of coffee. I'm only nineteen and I don't usually listen to this type of music. It's very easy listening. Caramel is my favorite and probably the only one I've really listened too, but I can let the CD just play while I'm at home and every song is nice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Silly songs not good? Not for me !
I love the song Caught a little sneeze. And I think the silly songs here are quite funny. It's easy to think that silly songs are bad or almost stupid, but not for me. It's more difficult to sing and play with correction a silly song that a good one. Ok, I know, it's just I guess and I'm sure that if you try to play in your piano or keyboard one of this silly songs and sing them, you will feel something near the ridicolous... And Tori doesn't sound ridicolous, just funny.

3-0 out of 5 stars Silly songs and one small gem.
The first single from her 1996 "Boys for Pele," "Caught A Lite Sneeze" was released before the album and gave fans a taste of what was to come. The b-sides on this single are called "Silly Songs" on the back cover, and for the most part, that they are."This Old Man," you guessed it, is her take on the traditional children's song, "That's What I like Mick (The Sandwich Song)" is a cover of the song by the British duo Chas & Dave, and "Toodles Mr. Jim" brings us thoughts of Amos's childhood. The stand-out track on this single, believe it or not, is "Graveyard," which clocks in at less than a minute. It is a largely beautiful composition in a very small amount of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun collection of silly songs
"Boys For Pele" has to be Tori's most ambitious album to date. It was also the most difficult album for me to digest. "Boys For Pele" is a far cry from the lush sounds of "Little Earthquakes" and "Under the Pink", nevertheless the album is one of Tori's most compelling albums ever. One of my favorite songs on the album is "Caught a Lite Sneeze". I loved listening to the melodies of Tori's piano playing crash against the rhythms of the drums. The harpsichord added another dimension to the song as well as Tori's music in general. And like a lot of her singles, Tori added on a bunch of songs that wasn't on her album. This time the listener gets to hear Tori sing a bunch of silly songs like "This Old man" and "Toodles Mr. Jim". I thought it was a nice contrast from her previous b-sides. They were mt certainly different from what I was used to hearing. Even Tori has a goofy side. I think it is refreshing to see Tori indulge her silly side with these songs. I enjoyed the bonus songs on the single. It adds another personality to Tori. I wish people would just see that. ... Read more

A must have for fans of American Football. The fans were disappointed to see it go by the wayside in 1999, but were pleasantly surprised by Mike Kinsella's "Owen."Although not quite American Football, "Places To Go," "Declaration of Incompetence," "You Should Do It Now," are probably the closest we're going to get.But darn it, I really miss the horns ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Addicting....
WOW, this album is beautiful. The acoustic work, soft and gentle voice of Mike, clever and honest lyrics that actually mean something. My favorite song on this album if I had to pick one is "Dead Mean Don't lie" however I never listen to it without listening to the entire album. The album is simply addicting, everyone that I've introduced Owen to has thanked me, a gentle, mellow, soft, and beautiful album. This is a must have, at least for me it is ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm In The Grass All Wine Colored to Infinity
While some have been critical of this album for numerosu reasons, mainly that it is post-recovery, I still find everythign Evan Dando touches to be gold. The songs are pure musical perfection, and Evanstill holds the same brilliant musical spirit as ever before. I have listened to Evan for many, many years, and a bad Dando album is till 100 times better than anythign else for me. I love it, and think it is a great album. "All my Life", and "In the Grass Wine Colored" are classics, to be sure. No matter what Evan sings, I find myself unable to shake it from ny head many hours later. Thanks, Evan, and keep writing. I have been through addicition, drug years, punk/power trash, etc, right there with you, and out the other side I am glad to have musicians like you blessing my ears.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evan, Your day has never come
Ok, so I am an Evan Dando "Huge Fan."I do have to say though, that the thought of seeing his last album at such a huge discount is a bit depressing. Are we forgetting that he has been neglected by the usual reviewers for years?Evan Dando is the last of his stock.A true storyteller who many people think of as a "pretty boy" but is really just a songwriter.I digress. This is a great album. And where do we here it (outside of the most esoteric college radio?no where)?
2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
Ive seen Evan's' solo act as well as The Lemonheads.I grew up with all the Lemonheads albums, and was fairly optimistic about this release. The lyrics are generic for the most part. Its sad to see Evan's songwriting skills have been so damaged by his self destruction. The album has about three great songs though. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Ugh
You MUST be a fan to enjoy this. One of the worst guitar sounds I've ever heard in a professional recording. I knew Ani was a love her/hate her performer, but a couple of her full acoustic songs I had heard weren't too bad. I got this record from 5-0 out of 5 stars funky
This album is amazing! I am a huge Ani fan and this double disc is one of my favorite Ani releases. It is a collection of a lot of her great songs[32 Flavors, Dilate, and my favorite, Jukebox] but with a funky spin. Every note is harder and has more emotion then the versions you will find on her CDs. She performs with her 6 piece band which is made up of some horns, keyboards, and a booming bass.A lot of the songs soundcompletely new because of the passion in the performance. It also has 3 previously unreleased songs on it. I strongly recomend this CD to anyone, from obsessive fans to first timers!

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly not "Living in Clip" part Two
This album will do much to increase the "Ani is the female Dylan" hype. Like his Bobness, Ani often tries to reinvent herself, tours relentlessly, inspires loyal dedication in her fans and now (as this release proves) can't choose a good live set of tracks to save herself.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Pele times...
About Tori Amos's singles a lot of thing have been written. Most of the fans complain about Tori is not releasing singles with b sides (even "Scarlet's Walk" had a few b sides thought the web and the beatiful Operation Peter Pan in the single "A sort of fairytale"). What is missing? The art work? The jewel case?
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Item! Wrong title though.
This is a great cd single, however it is incorrectly titled for the track listing that is stated. If this cd has those songs on it, then it is Talula CD5. I was disappointed because I collect Tori Amos cd's and know for sure this IS NOT TALULA PART 1, if those are the songs listed on the cd. It is true though that Talula Part 1 and Talula Part 2 exist though. They have just been long out of print. However this version of this single, Talula CD5, has ben reprinted since it's first release in 1995-96 and you can still purchase it brand new. And that's probably what this cd actually is, Talula CD5.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta love anything Tori
I have to say that I love anything Tori does. And I really enjoy it when she goofs off and is just"herself" on her albums, instead of being the so called "Norm" of what an album is suppose to be. For that is a true artist! Only a true fan would enjoy the talks, the thrilling power, and breaths she takes when singing a song. I'm glad she doesn't hide it. I have this album and it is a nice break from the studio "perfection" recording. It is nice to hear someone be human and themselves. For that is what has made Tori, Tori and has gotten her where she is today. Highly recommend this and other Tori singles that are full of this fun stuff, if your open minded. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars i really like it!!
First of all, i do not think this sounds like a return to ani's her and her guitar albums. But I do think this is possibly one of my favorite of her albums, especially when i am in that mood, it is kind of a low key album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful solitude
In this album Ani does it all by herself: lyrics and music (as usual), production, mastering, mixing... and the result is undoubtedly beautiful. The melodies are sweet and flawless, the poems are strong and direct, the voice effects are enchanting. This is not the Ani you may be used to, but it's still empowering how she deeply and bravely analyzes and faces her feelings and sorrow.
4-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Workshop
I came across Ani Difranco's music through covers by guitar slinging folk girls, woman who were quite good at what they did and honored their influences. Then I listened to Knuckle Down, just last year. I was like, oh, so this is Ani Difranco. An all-powerful Amazon warrior, not just some sniveling girl (to quote the girl herself, all irony intended). With needs. And, I think, that is what Educated Guess is about: needs, needs not met, needs that expose us, and, finally, make or break us.

What's most astonishing about Amy Ray's torrid, ferocious solo debut is just how convincingly she wears the colors of the riot grrrl. Save the dreamy acoustic "Lazyboy," the record rages like a showdown at the barricades, with Ray and her cadre of subversives (notably Sugar's David Barbe, Joan Jett, and Southern undergrounders the Butchies and the Rock*A*Teens) tearing into mainstream rock critics, antigay violence, gender stereotypes, and thorny sexual politics--all with the punk brio of Bikini Kill or Hole. If the lyrics can be as strident as manifestos, the waves of ruthless yet melodic guitar rock are never less than urgent, and often exhilarating. Stripped of all earnestness, Ray lets loose an unvarnished rock & roll passion--taking no prisoners and offering no regrets. Read more

being one of the biggest amy ray fans in the world, i am surprised to see that i had yet to review this one.4-0 out of 5 stars Ripping Off the Mask
Amy Ray's "Stag" is an excellent set, diverse in its reach. The opener "Johnny Rotten" has Amy on mandolin in a sad tale of a brother gone wrong."Laramie" explodes in an angry wash of electric guitar commenting on the crucifixion of a gay man on a fence post, "We hit snow on the road to Laramie, we all heard about that mess, but that town ain't no different than the rest.""Lucystoners" is a great rocker unleashing anger & energy, "Testing 1-2-3 in the marketplace, but it's a demographic base disgrace.""Late Bloom" is a thundering midtempo rocker with a passionate vocal and exceptional melody, "All that time that you were walking the line, well I don't mind, now I know.""MTNS of Glory" rocks vengefully, "Gonna miss being the boy, gonna miss being the man."The CD closes on high note with "On Your Honor," "Put away your hate."Amy Ray is letting loose on this solo set and produces some incredibly emotional, moving rock & roll. This is essential listening for any open-minded rocker.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars I think I'm in love...
This cd rocks! I picked this album up at an IG concert thinking of cool songs like "Shame On You" and "Romeo and Juliet". What I got was even better. More edgeier beats, more in-your-face lyrics, same emotion driven voice. I can see alot of group anthems coming from this project. My only complaint is the song "Lazyboy". Am I the only person who thinks the whistling is annoying? Yes, the instruments are a tad bit too loud, but to say you can catch a few words is an exaggeration. I understand her just fine. Music fans won't be dissapointed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars WOW ... An Edgy Version of Edie Brickel
I am 41 yrs of age ... and in my younger years i just loved Edie Brickell. I found this CD in a record store as a pre-owned CD (2nd Hand CD) so i bought it not really knowing what to expect .. and to be truthful i can't stop playing the bloody thing .. when i got to the 4th song - lonely boy i couldn't help asking myself who the hell does she sound like .. and then within a few seconds i thought my god this is Edie's daughter .. there are also traces of Deborah Harry in a couple of her songs as well .. but Edie Brickell shines through in a few songs .. i actually had to look on the inside cover to see if Edie was actually singing .. so convincing is Leona .. and that is a good thing. Then i read a bio of Leona and read the Edie is an influence of hers. But Lazy Days & Comatised are signature songs for Leona .. a great find .. she is hot .. she is fresh .. she is talent .. we will be hearing a lot more from Ms Naess i am sure ..

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to believe
The only problem with Leona Naess is that she robs me of adjectives to use to describe her incredible music. To listen to some critics one would think that Leona is good now but used to be mediocre. This could not be further from the truth."Comatised" is a stunning debut from an extraordinary talent. Why this cd wasn't as big or bigger than AM's "Jagged Little Pill" is inconceivable."Charm Attack" and "Anything" are equally powerful tracks, there is something wonderful going on here."Lonely Boy" blew me away, to the point I couldn't believe what I was hearing, it was so darned (stronger language warranted, wary of Amazon editors) good.More uneven than her most recent or "I Tried to Rock You," it goes without saying that this is a must have for Naess fans, and would be a good introduction to Leona's music for new listeners. If you think this one is good, I say to you, wait until you hear her others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I've had this CD for a couple years after a friend recommended it to me, and I still love it as much as I did when I first bought it. It's very inspirational for me when I'm painting or writing, and the lyrics are just amazing. "Northern Star" is probably my favorite, though every song is good. A must have. ... Read more

Anybody looking for a fitting successor to Scottish acoustic pop heroes Aztec Camera and Belle & Sebastian need look no further than, er, Norway. Like his Scandinavian peers in Kings of Convenience, Bergen wunderkind Sondre Lerche has taken the melodic six-string formula and given it new life on his debut. Guitars jangle, strings swell, and rhythms shuffle as the singer effortlessly conjures warmth and romance ("Pain and sorrow must come, if you go," he muses on "Virtue and Wine"). Despite his youthful appearance, Lerche has spent years perfecting his craft--he picked up his instrument at age 8 after falling for '80s Norwegian pop heartthrobs A-ha--and the experience more than shows in the excellent musicianship and arrangements of songs like "You Know So Well" and "Dead Passengers." A most promising start. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He was 17???
I am still amazed that he wrote some of these songs in his teens. Sondre is definitely talented and these songs handily show that his skills were in full effect at an early age. The melodies are fantastic, he has a nice singing voice, and the arrangements are pretty strong. It's really hard not to sing along to this stuff. I hope he can keep it up for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Sondre's incredible!
An amazing first album.I've had the pleasure of seeing him live a couple times, and he just blows be away.So much talent at such a young age.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great find
While I probably would rate "Two Way Monologues" even higher, Faces Down is a pretty amazing effort. I understand that the CD was held for a year after being recorded so Sondre could finish High school in Norway so he could tour to support it.

This is an absolutely wonderful cd. I personally like it much better than his new one, but Australia and this one really, truly showcase his talent as a guitarist and singer-songwriter. This music is honest and heartfelt. I hope Howie's next cd will be more like this EP and Australia. That's more what the music industry needs - honesty and true talent, less Ashlee Simpson and other manufactured singers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!
I found Howie Day through the internet since he hasn't broken into the Australian main stream yet. This guy is seriously talented. One of the best solo artists I have heard in a long time. The Madrigals CD/DVD set shows how talented Howie Day really is.How he can get so many sounds from just an Acoustic guitar is truely amazing.I would recommend this album to anyone who is sick of manufactured pop artists (can I really call them artists?) produced by record companies purely for making money.

4-0 out of 5 stars despite common misconception...
Howie Day is not a character from your favorite anime series. I've always liked him. This CD is pretty good. This DVD is incredibly good. However, Howie Day's music (from this ep, don't worry) is best described when in reference to live performance. I saw him live in Nashville and St. Louis when he opened for Nickel Creek (and, though it feels like sacrilege, he totally upstaged them) and he was phenomenal. He started off with "Sorry, So Sorry," which had been my favorite on 'Madrigals.' I could hardly wait for the guitar and vocal loop stuff he does toward the end, and it surpassed expectations. He played several other songs (including "My Heart Will Go On," "Africa" and "Don't Panic" covers), my favorite being "Ghost." There was so much going on in that song, but it all made sense musically. He closed with "Madrigals." It was beautiful, and every girl in the audience was swooning, including myself. You have to see it. He puts so much personality into his performance.. I probably enjoyed that aspect the most. The Madrigals CD/DVD is great. I have a new-found appreciation for it after seeing him twice, but whether you have or haven't, I think this is the best Day purchase you could make. ... Read more

This is one of the most fascinating pages of Amazon reviews on the entire site.Reading down from the top, you've got Aimee's own repudiation of this collection, followed by a rant by someone named Steve Ludlum, who apparently loves Mann's music (as I do), but disapproves of her manners.

If you want to try her out listen to a cd the artist will be compensated for and not some lowsome comapny that cares nothging about the cd and therefore you the listener.. Aimee Mann is an amazing artist..this cd shouldn't even be used as a coster. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to your music library
Elvis Costello is quite literally the most unique and interesting man in rock-n-roll today. He hit the music scene in the mid-1970s, and no one quite knew what to make out of this strange man with the big glasses and funny stage name. At one point he was labeled Punk, and another New Wave. But, Elvis Costello (born Declan Patrick MacManus) was never easily buttonholed into any category. About the only thing you can say is that he is Elvis Costello.
2-0 out of 5 stars Elvis Is Dead
It pains me to say that Declan McManus (his real name) no longer has the chops to fill an album with hits.Sure, he can still write great lyrics, but this album is sadly lacking in melodies.Without the foundation of hummable tunes, the music collapses.I think Costello deserved to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, but I was disappointed...ARRGHH!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Will The REAL Elvis C. Please Stand Up?
Hey, wait a minute; I remember this guy. Didn't he sing that song about "Alison"? And something about radio and wanting to bite the hand that feeds him? Yeah, that's the guy, and he's back. Again. When I Was Cruel marks the return of the songwriting aggro-monster, the biting, bitter, irreverent caricature who went into hiding since his last flirtation with straightforward, punk-influenced rock and roll on "Blood and Chocolate." In the previous decade, that album was hailed as Elvis' return to form. Naturally enough, most critics agree that this album is the same thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Relax
Soft, beautiful songs sung by the great Shawn Colvin.Listening to these songs gives you a very cozy feeling."In The Bleak Mid-Winter" is a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Helping Baby to Fall Sleep
I am a HUGE Shawn Colvin fan, so when this album came out, I ran out and bought it, as I do for every new album Shawn Colvin records. I also love Christmas, so I was doubly happy. Somehow, though, this CD never got much play. I like the songs - I think Shawn Colvin's renditions of old and new classics are beautiful - but it's so mellow, and I always preferred to pop in more upbeat holiday tunes.
2-0 out of 5 stars I've tried so hard to like it
About once a year, I get this CD out and try once more.I love Christmas music, lullabies, and Shawn Colvin, but this album just doesn't work for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Album
Imperfectly is a great Ani album, but, like many of her albums, it takes a few listens to fully appreciate it.I was bored about halfway through the first time I heard it but now it's one of my favorites.Probably only worth the $15 for an Ani fan willing to put in the time and truly appreciate the artistry of this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of her best
I am the owner of around eleven Ani DiFranco CDs, and Imperfectly remains my favorite. This CD is a showcase of how amazing her music can really be. Every song on Imperfectly is great. As usual, the guitar is beautiful and the lyrics are thought provoking and well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars "the mainstream is so polluted with lies"
This is another of Ani's excellent earlier albums that earned her the reputation (at least in the eyes of anyone dismissive of those who think for themselves) of being just an angry, scary lesbian with a big mouth. Of course that description of Ani is utterly false, but when did these people ever let something like the truth get in the way of anything?

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of Tori's Best B-Sides!
The single to "Cornflake Girl" is one of my favorite CD singles.Usually with a single, the B-sides are fun to have and the disc is worth having a listen to every once in a great while. This single is different. It has found its way into my player more often than some band's full-length albums!
5-0 out of 5 stars A single with some very nice b-side treats.
The original version of the title track can be found on Amos's second solo release, "Under the Pink."The version here is the one used for the promotional video clip for the song.It is shortened dramatically, with a significant amount of content taken out.The reason for this is quite simple: the original is simply too long for radio and video play.Regardless, it worked: "Cornflake Girl" remains one of Amos's biggest hits to date. The b-sides on this single include the cute, but not ground-breaking, "Daisy Dead Petals," and some of Tori's best b-side work: the Amos fan favorite "Honey" and the haunting "Sister Janet."

3-0 out of 5 stars is it worth buying?
If you love tori, you'll say yes.But the truth is, if you already have a lot of other singles, I just don't think this is a necessary one to own.I enjoyed Daisy Dead Petals, but you can get Corflake Girl on Under the Pink and a live version of Honey (which I prefer) on the Hey Jupiter cd.I just don't think Sister Janet is worth all of the fuss.If you love tori you'll get this regardless of what I say, I just thought I'd forewarn you of having some repeat songs in your collection. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
The great thing about Tori is that she has creative freedom like very very few artists have these days. She oversees everything from producing to writing to whatever else goes into making an album. Not sure where she was going with this one.Usually her work is very cohesive but I didn't feel it here.Maybe I am missing something. There are a couple of real beauties here like "Ribbons Undone," "Parasol" and "Toast" but overall my reaction to the album was that it was a little lackluster.Like I have said in my other quite humble reviews of her work, she's my girl and I'm stickin' with her.I will always be curious to see what she does next! That's what's great about Tori, she's very unpredictable and it's the very thing I love about her music.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Fall and Fall of the Once Great Tori Amos
After the release of "Under the Pink", I confidentaly stated in writing that Tori Amos was the successor to Joni Mitchell. I don't believe I've ever heard a more passionate performer, and she was a great singer, pianist and songwriter to boot. While "Boys for Pele" and "From the Choirgirl Hotel" weren't up the standard of UtP and "Little Earthquakes", she clearly was still a talent to be reckoned with. "To Venus and Back" and "Strange Little Girls" were clearly weaker, but still quite interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tori - At Her Best!
I love, love, love this album! Her master stroke resides within each and every song on this CD. From start to finish, this is an album of brilliant soul-searching. The imagery can be enjoyed by the casual fan, but cherished by the Tori fanatic. It's an absolute must-have if you're a fanatic! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Thinker
I got this album about three years ago. When I first aquired it, I gave it a quick listen and then put it away for about 2 years. I pulled it out again and listened to it. I WAS BLOWN AWAY. I was on a long drive and I found myself getting extremely involved in the songs, the images, and the story Mr. Bazan told.
