5-0 out of 5 stars i haven't listened to the bonus disc yet.
i really like this album a lot.if you think the eighties weren't cool then you probably didn't trust elvis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Costello At His Best...
'Trust' is, without a doubt, Elvis Costello's most original record; it's also his strongest. One day the critics will wise up, until then, it's our little secret. Buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential EC
As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, its incredibly hard to really pick a "best" EC album between '77 and '86 simply because the man just made some remarkably amazing music. Whats interesting to note about this record is that it followed "Taking Liberties"/"Ten Bloody Marys.." (a collection of b-sides) and "Get Happy!" (an homage to soul). So is this really Costello's fourth album? Theres no denying, its musically closer to the first three releases and by god its really damn good. Theres a few tracks I'm not so hot on like "Shot with his own gun" but the rest is gold. The lyrical maturity shows on tracks like "You'll never be a man", and "Sad about girls" is one the best songs ever left off an album. Listen to this album, weep with joy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars King Of America
Only owned Costello`s "The Very Best Of" but have long been a fan of his. Then I recently watched the "Blackpool" drama series on TV and heard and liked the catchy track "Brilliant Mistake". I immediately recognised the artist and then searched and found that it was on "King Of America". Not disappointed at all with this CD, excellent stuff and with the added bonus CD to boot it makes brilliant value for money, which buyers do not often get these days.
5-0 out of 5 stars the real elvis reigns
this is the best album from one of the best poets of this or any other generation. it's the message that's the meaning to paraphrase McLuhan. He's the greatest

1-0 out of 5 stars King of America? I'll Give Him this: He Had Alot of Balls
Can you imagine, an English New Wave pop star going to the US, enlisting guys like the legendary James Burton and Ron Tutt and recording pretentious half ass and some essentially anti-American songs...What balls...Can you imagine the artwork of a smug EC w/ a crown, rabbi beard and spectacles calling himself The King of America? Damn EC had balls. I still turn the record cover over...gross!! What a tacky MF to pull that off....I still can't stomach this release and I bought this record in '86.....never liked it. EC at his hideous self-important beginning that extends to the present day.Songs range from Good to awful...Jack of all Parades, Lovable and The Big Light good... Indoor Fireworks, Little Palaces, Brilliant Mistake...not good....before everyone flips out, I'm a huge EC fan but this is where I draw the line, even though I half heartedly draw it at Goodbye Cruel World.....EC went on to become a self proclaimed icon...along w/ Tom Petty and Lou Reed to name a few....for a sincere songwriter see Graham Parker and his first 5 studio LPs or Andy Partidge's XTC early-mid 80's output, otherwise skip this and get EC's Punch the Clock or This Years' Model....This record is whiny, self indulgent and disturbing. ... The latest in an illustrious series that includes Elliott Murphy, Marshall Crenshaw, Paul Kelly, and John Hiatt, Freedy is an exquisite singer-songwriter for the critics to champion and the masses to disregard. Butch Vig's crisp sonics and the restrained, almost old-fashioned rock and folk caress of the music make Johnston's deceptively easy-going tunes easy to fall in love with. "Evie's Tears," "Two Lovers Stop" and "Bad Reputation" are favorites. Read more

I have close to 1000 actual CDs (you know like with cases and booklets and stuff - imagine!), and another several hundred digital recordings
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Forget This One
It's a crime that this album did not raise Freedy Johnston to any more than the cult footnote that he is today. An excellent songwriter, Johnston had previously released the stunning CAN YOU FLY? a couple years earlier. With Butch Vig producing and having major label backing, THIS PERFECT WORLD seemed poised to push Freedy into the spotlight.Well, as you know now, it never happened.Still it's a solid album worthy of investigation by anyone who calls themselves a fan of songwriters such as Josh Rouse, Marshall Crenshaw or Elliott Smith.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another overlooked gem.
The music industry is a funny place. There is often no commonality between true musical talent and record sales.Often the music found at the top of the charts is not the best music available, but instead the most widely played, the most overtly commercial. It's reasoning like this that a fine singer-songwriter like Freedy Johnston is routinely overlooked. Depending on one's perspective - it's a large shame, because Johnston is worth checking out.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful
I came across this artist and this album when I was searching through the musical selections of other Amazon buyers who had purchased some of my other favorites.I'm so glad I did. This album is just hypnotic.I think it would appeal to diverse tastes ranging from fans of Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan to Alison Krauss, Chantal Kreviazuk and Jewel.Rosie has a pure and beautiful voice that can both uplift you and break your heart. My favorite song on this album is "Farewell", perhaps because I just went through a breakup and the simplicity of the song and emotion-laden lyrics take your breath away.My other favorite is "Bicycle Tricycle", a song that appeals to every woman who sometimes aches for the simpler times of childhood, particularly when you've just been hurt. The way that Rosie interjects faint recordings of childhood dialog into her music only add to the beauty of her songs.I would highly recommend this album to anyone looking for a serene escape that will make you smile and, yes, cry...but that's not always a bad thing.

Ani DiFranco was a star from the get-go. It just took the world a little while to catch on to that fact. In 1990, folksingers didn't shave their heads, wear nose rings, or sing about the feelings in their jeans, but DiFranco did. Her bracing, punky stance hit just as hard on her debut as it does now--perhaps even more so, due to its freshness and DiFranco's uncompromising solo acoustic attack. These songs, all delivered with an absorbing passion and a palpable conviction, are the bedrock of her soaring career. Some, like the fantastic and challenging "Both Hands," still pop up in concert. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ani's First...and it's just as amazing as all the others
Bare bones Ani and her guitar with songs you'll recognize from live albums or some of the bootlegs. This is a great album which really showcases Ani at her no-frills best. A must-have for any Ani fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ani album for beginners and classic for the rest
The raw emotion, great lyrics, and intuitive gutiar play makes the feeling of being a new adult in a crap NYC apartment just as close as your speakers. This may sound bad, but it doesnt hurt for music making, and you dont have to put up with the shooting sounds at night. :)Ani kindly leads us through a young woman's life on her own:relationships, jobs, politics. At the end, leaving a great album.Personally, this will never leave my collection.

I'm 11 years old and I love Ani Difranco music. I have all of her albums. Yes, some to of the songs are inapropriate. I don't care! I love everything about Ani Difranco music. I love her voice; I love the melodies; most of all, I love the lyrics. Ani Difranco is so honest that you CAN ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND THE LYRICS. She is amazing!

4-0 out of 5 stars When Smokey Sings...
I have listened to the song "Good Times" a million times, and I can't stop thinking it's Smokey Robinson. Listen to the long "goodbye" as she sings "I don't wanna say goodbye", and the way she sings the word "little" in "I want a little more".
4-0 out of 5 stars The lady with the great voice continues to dazzle
Edie Brickell has a voice that is hard to describe. It can be cutting an edgy at times, but here on this record its soothing and seems to gel perfectly with the music in each of the songs. While this alblum may lack a # 1 smash single, it is a very likeable record with nearly all of the songs being quite easy to listen to. Starting with the jump start of "Tommorrow Comes" and ending with the playful "Lost in the Moment" this record continues to showcase Brickell as a steady force in women's pop rock. Hard Times, Green, and When the Lights Go Down are just a few of the fine tracks here. A record you can enjoy listening to multiple times with ease..without having to constantly press skip on your disc changer!

4-0 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect Imagery
Edie Brickell has proven she can combine the prosaic with the inspirational, and make rejuvenating even the most haunting lyrics. Her voice is wonderful and her intuition with lyrics is subtly brilliant.A very relaxing CD, but one that makes you listen carefully more than once. ... Read more

If you like "Rid of Me", then buy this CD! Although I like the polish of her final product, these demos really give you insight into her true vocal power. This stuff explodes from DEEP inside her. Uncomfortable at times. Moving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yours Truly
These days, with everyone knowing everything there is too know about music and the musicians who make it, I have given up on trying to classify anything, or on claiming to know what's good and what's bad anymore. But this record is good. The songs are sincere, well written, and true to self. She really let herself shine and was shameless in releasing and promoting this definitive material. This isn't for everyone, but if you can put your finger on emotion and enjoy artistic expression in music, this one's for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rid of Me demos
Personally I'm a fan of Steve Albini's production on Rid of Me. Even though the album didn't quite reach the heights of Dry, which I still consider her best album. Rid of Me was a great record and I really love listening to these demos. I think any fan of hers can appreciate them. The release was a reaction of sorts to critics of Albini's production on Rid of Me and certainly a more raw take on the material. This album is easily worth owning just for "Hardly Wait." It's one of her best songs and this was it's only offical release. The song didn'tmake it onto Rid of Me, I still don't understand why. ... Read more

I've been a Ben Harper fan for almost 10 years now. What an amazing artists! If you want to buy an album...buy this one. You want to feel something? Buy this album. You want to fall in love with music all over? Listen to Ben Harper. There aren't artists that come around everyday like him. It's rockin, it's mellow, it's pain, it's pleasure, and it's a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEN on AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
I recently saw BEN HARPER on the PBS TV saturday night weekly AUSTIN CITY LIMITS and this guy and his band blew his "Live" audience and myself off our surroundings with his pure and earthy multitextured brand of original music. Whether it's rock, pop, a little bit of country, reggae, blues, or jazz tinged soulful R&B music, BEN is one of the very few all around musicians who captivates and leaves you spellbound with his sincere performances. No question about it: I had to purchase this box set and the other three cds. BEN HARPER's recordings are priceless and classic...he thoroughly entertains and lifts you with his music and message. I wish I'd been exposed to BEN HARPER years ago, but, better late than never...Simply irresitable! THANK YOUPBS TV & Austin City Limits!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ben Harper: someone you should know!
For those who don't know Ben Harper yet, it's never too late! Wether you like Blues, Rock or even R&B, with Ben you'll be more than satisfied... And if today, it's quite easy to put a tag on artists, such as: Pop, Rap, Punk...for him, it doesn't work! In fact, his music is obviouly inspired by many other styles, and the result is always an incredibly surprising experience! Then it seems fair to say that Ben Harper's sound is unusual and also extremely pure...Read more

Tori Amos' following seems as fervent as it is unlikely, a forceful fusion of oft-mocked '70s singer-songwriter conceits with a progressive bent in an era dominated by alt ‘n' snark, yet channeled through her own, typically heart-on-the-sleeve sense of emotional dramatics. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Return of the Piano
I had the pleasure of seeing Miss Amos perform in NYC during this Original Sinsuality tour. I was mesmerized by how immense Amos' ability was at playing the piano. At times, she would straddle the piano bench, playing the organ with one hand and the piano with the other. Truly inspiring.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tori and her piano
The best stuff from this pack are the versions - 'Don't Look Back In Anger' (Oasis), 'Father Figure' (George Michael), 'Like A Prayer' (Madonna), 'Livin' On A Prayer' (Bon Jovi) and my favorites 'My Favorite Things' (Julie Andrews - Rodgers & Hammerstein), 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' (Bonnie Tyler), 'I Ran' (Flock Of Seagulls) and 'Suzanne' (Leonard Cohen). All of the others are also great like 'Hey Jupiter', 'Father Lucifer' and 'Playboy Mommy'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
I don't know THAT much about Elvis Costello, but I recently bought his whole catalog on CD except for just a few recent releases. My favorites are Aim Is True, Almost Blue, which I've had since their initial LP release, and King of America, which is new to me and is SO great.Blood And Chocolate is real nice to listen to. There's certainly nothing wrong with it, like there is something kind of wrong with "Spike". The essays by Elvis Costello on the Rhino discs are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of His Best Made Better
Once again Rhino shows us that for every Elvis Costello album that is released, there's 1 1/2 albums of great matterial that we miss out on. With the rerelease of this album, we are treated to even more great songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but...
You read all the reviews and stuff and you watch the Live In Memphis DVD, hear "Blue Chair" live, buy Cruel Smile and hear "Uncomplicated" live, and you like the raw energy and power and all of those performances and so you figure that's what this album sounds like. I thought this would be like the perfect Elvis album, even after getting King Of America, and so I bought it. Turns out it wasn't as I expected. This really isn't too hard rocking at all. I'm no metal head or anything, I draw the hard rock line at AC/DC, any distortion after that is just noise, like Metallica. AC/DC is just good hard rock, and I didn't expect this album to be Highway To Hell, but I figured it'd reflect the live versions of the two songs and the bitterness of the Goodbye Cruel World bonus disc version of "I Hope You're Happy Now". But this is really nothing like that. "Uncomplicated" doesn't feature the bite of either of the live versions I've heard: as said, Cruel Smile, and when I saw him on the 29th of July this year. "Blue Chair" is melodic, almost acoustic pop music. "I Hope You're Happy Now" isn't as sarcastic or angry as I imagined it and think would sound better that way. "Tokyo Storm Warning" probably comes closest to the sound I imagined, but it still doesn't seem as rowdy as I was hoping. I've no problem with the slower songs really, I was just wanting the ones I'd heard rock live to rock here. Track by track:

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My Favorite Bonus Discs!
The bonus disc on this album is really wonderful, quite possibly my favorite bonus disc of all of the Rhino reissues for Elvis Costello. It's an interesting collection of Elvis taste in music and his influences.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treat
One of the best things about the prolific, complex Elvis Costello is that he is steeped in popular music. Some of his best records, from the Stax/Motown inspired Get Happy! to the Burt Bacharach collaboration Painted From Memory, wear their influences on their sleeves, but it's okay, because he's so creative and he loves the music so much.Sometimes, I think his encyclopedic knowledge causes his reach to exceed his grasp; he can be as great as his heroes, but not as great as ALL his heroes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice romp through Elvis music collection
When "Kojak Variety" was first released it was ignored by most EC fans and mentioned by critics as an example of a lack of inspiration on EC's part. Nothing could be further from the truth. While "Spike" and "Mighty As A Rose" demonstrated EC's diversity over the course of a single album, "Kojak" demonstrates where that inspiration originally came from. What's best about this reissue is the second disc included here. With thirty (!) remakes of classic contemporary and older rock 'n' roll gems, the second disc makes this the gem of the recent EC trio of reissues.

"All those things I've done before," Bob Mould sings, dismissing Hüsker Dü, the band he toiled with for most of the '80s, "it doesn't matter anymore." That's partially true--Hüsker were always much more brutal than "See a Little Light," the wistful, catchy pop song on Mould's 1989 solo debut. But even Mould's most introspective previous songs didn't have quite the scab-opening quality of "Lonely Afternoon" and "Wishing Well." Though Mould's guitar and Anton Fier's drums made Read more

i have been a fan of Sugar for quite a while, and always enjoyed classic Husker Du, but was rather late in terms of discovering Bob Mould's solo efforts.regardless, since i got this CD about two years ago, not a week goes by without listening to it.it is simply an amazing effort put forth by Mould, and to think that it came out in 1989/1990 blows me away.how many years i missed listening to this gem of a release!!!every track is fantastic...the melodies are superb, the lyrics are thought provoking, and Mould's vocals sound better than ever.there is not one weak track....the guitars are angry, the melodies are catchy, the words will leave impressions in your mind long after you're done listening....

4-0 out of 5 stars First rate, fantastic
Something about Leona Naess's music grabbed hold of me and won't let go.This was as good or better than her most recent effort; she makes it seem effortless to create such memorable music; breezy, ingenuous pop at its best.Especial favorites are "Hurricane," "All The Stars," "I Tried to Rock You," "Sunny Sunday," "Mayor of Your Town."An instant classic.Needless to say, wish I'd given this five stars instead of four. That happens to me a lot ...

3-0 out of 5 stars good performance
Leona's performance on ''i tried to rock you but you only roll'' is quite good..I liked it and i will follow her new works..

3-0 out of 5 stars Another female singer/songwriter...
Another female singer/songwriter in a field of thousands is better than 80% of what's out there but 20% of thousands is still a lot to compete with. Maybe being Diana Ross' stepdaughter will help her stand out from the pack...plus she's pretty cute. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
I just got this today and have listened to it several times.I think it's great.Of course, "Winter" is really well known, but I like it enough that it's good to have another copy of the same version."The Pool" is haunting, but creepy.I like it though. As if Enya were channeling the restless souls of the dead."Take to the Sky" is nice and upbeat after this.
4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Single
Breakdown:
5-0 out of 5 stars Three of her best b-side tracks.
The beautiful title track is taken from her solo debut album, "Little Earthquakes."Although marked as a limited edition, this single is pretty much readily available. It includes a hand-written lyrics booklet by Amos and some of her best b-side work.Amos herself has said that one of her biggest regrets is not including "Upside Down" on "Earthquakes," and it is easy to see why.The song has become one of Amos's fans' favorite tracks, along with "Sweet Dreams" (recently re-recorded for her greatest hits collection "Tales of a Librarian") and a show standard on her 2003 concert tour, "Take to the Sky.""The Pool" is also quite interesting in its own right, but this single is a must-have for the aforementioned songs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for PJ Harvey!
IS THIS DESIRE? is PJ Harvey's fourth studio album and by now I've learned to expect the unexpected, especially after such distinct varying styles of each of her previous records. My expectations were pretty high though, cos TO BRING YOU MY LOVE was such an epic of an album that I didn't think she could top its grandeur but I'm glad to say this album is just as good, if not better than the latter.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Prettiest mess you've ever seen..."
Is This Desire? by P.J. Harvey is such a haunting and strange album. I like it though because the songs are not silly or pretentious, Harvey never tries to be somebody she is not. She is a real artist who likes doing her own thing and I respect that. Standout tracks include: The Sky lit up, The Wind, The River, No girl so sweet, Catherine, A perfect day Elise, and my personal fave, Angelene. That song is so good, "I've seen men come and go but there will be one to collect my soul and come to me, 2 thousand miles away, he walks upon the coast, 2 thousand miles away it lays open like a road..." The River is sweetly mellow and sad, "Two silent birds circled by like our pain in the river..." But unfortantely some of the tracks are less than average, but Is This Desire? is a great album just not one of my all-time favorites, I prefer Dry and Stories from the city, stories from the sea. If you are just discovering P.J. Harvey then I recommend all her albums to see which one is your favorite. Enjoy!

Editorial Review

As she has become both indie icon and industry force, AniDiFranco has grown more unpredictable, savvy, and restless with everyrelease. On this sumptuously packaged double set, DiFranco often poursher brutally personal and political images into summery, horn-basedjazz arrangements--Maceo Parker eventakes one gorgeously funky sax solo--and yet somehow still keeps thefocus on her own minimalist guitar and vulnerable, emotionallystrung-out voice. Her jittery, jazzy phrasing deconstructs the pleasure andpoison of her lyrics, so that even vicious lines like "our culture isjust a roughneck / teenage jerk / with a bottle of pills / and a bottleof booze" resonate beyond easy condemnation. This is a dark, brooding, but ultimately cathartic work of confessional art. On nearly everytrack, DiFranco pursues the kind of defenseless honesty and personalvision that few other performers today would dare. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars give it a few listens
i love this album. at first, it sounded quite a bit like elevator music. it takes a few extra listens, i think, to really unfold it. but once you do, it's a feast for the ears and soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars The album that made me an Ani fan
I enjoyed Ani's sound before Revelling/Reckoning was released, but I was not a serious fan. After several albums, her folky sound was starting to bore me... even the live releases were becoming mundane. After several jam sessions, spoken word rants, and live guitar strum tantrums, I started to wonder, "Is this the only thing that such an innovative musician is willing to experiment with? When is Ani going to put a spin on her sound?"
2-0 out of 5 stars politically apathetic fans' rantings
what is it with these people reviewing ani's albums and bitching about ani's left-wing politics and how that makes the albums go from great to just good?!?!
