4-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable for early versions of "Serpentine" and "Self Evident"
Ani DiFranco, famously independent within the music industry, continues to self-release all of her output on her own "Righteous Babe" label. Ani has released a couple of live albums over her 17 year career to date, including the definitive and all-encompassing 2002 release "So Much Shouting, So Much Laughing", which is basically a "greatest hits live" release.

Well, I was in FYE, with thier little scanny-headphone "preview your cd' things.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for any Avid Ani Fan...
I just recently received the entire lot of ani's 'official bootleg' series (yes, there are seven others that you gave purchase via her site), and I have to say that Carnegie Hall is, by far, one of the best.

Editorial Review

A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as "No Name #1," "No Name #2," etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed with a quiet angelic voice and a lyrical mind that easily transforms the squalid details of everyday life into something worth hearing about twice, Smith stood on the verge of getting it on. With his next, self-titled release, he did.Read more

Roman Candle has a very endearing adolescence to it much softer than Elliott's later work. An innocent recording of someone's youth.

5-0 out of 5 stars elliott's best?
As someone who owns all of Elliott Smith's albums, this album has become easily my favourite. I love all his albums, including his dreamworks albums, but this album still stands out to me as the best. I find it hard not to draw comparisons with Nick Drake's Pink Moon, which achieved a sense of intimacy and melancholy that did not exist to such a degree on his earlier more produced albums. When people say the production on this album is poor, do not expect a grainy sound or inaudible vocals. The production creates an extremely sparse sound that complements Smith's haunting, fragile voice perfectly. As you listen to this album, the amazing interplay between the vocals and unique guitar melodies on each track emerges. This, combined with the albums short (30 minute) length, results in an album without filler that never loses your attention. I think this will remembered in a similar way to Nick Drake's Pink Moon - as the masterpiece of his tragically short career. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Suzanne Vega emerged in the mid-'80s, and while her intimate voice and acoustic guitar brought to mind Joni Mitchell, her urbane lyrics suggested a sensibility that was as much reportorial as confessional. Vega's second album, which replaced the delicate acoustic textures of her self-titled debut with more dramatic arrangements, includes Vega's career song, "Luka," surely one of the biggest hits ever written about child abuse. But it was the energetic folk-rock production of "Luka," thick with ringing guitars and pushed by perky drums, that let the listener luxuriate in a song that suggested the darkness that can lurk behind a neighbor's door. The title tune confronts personal loneliness with a similarly powerful performance, while "Ironbound/Fancy Poultry" makes a downtown landscape sound downright homey. Well-turned tunes like "Calypso" and "Gypsy" recall the softer textures of her debut. Ironically, Vega's next big hit would come when the English production duo DNA made a dance hit out of "Tom's Diner," a nursery-rhyme tribute to a coffee shop that opens the album. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the few REAL Class acts
Suzanne is by far one of the most prolific female (or any other kind) singer songwriter in the world.I was skeptical when I first heard Luka on the radio on Suzannes debut. While that was and still a very good glimpse into her abilities...it wasn't her best. Fortunately for me I heard Solitude Standing on a progressive radio station and the "honeymoon" has never ended. In concert she is totally captivating with her non pretentious and humble musical masterpieces. Her use of linguistics, melody, and diverse subject matter never fail to transport one to a lush garden of imagination. Accents of meticulous placements of bass, and percussive spices that only one woman in the world can cook up. Truly one of a kind and the classiest acts ever to grace a stage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, timeless and totally under-rated classic...
Over her 20 year career Suzanne Vega has produced a great deal of music that's as good as or better than any of her more famous singer/songwriter peers, with the difference that she's prepared to push things out to the edge lyrically without losing sight of the fact that what makes a song work is a great tune, an exciting, carefully executed arrangement and... sincere delivery. And, when she gets it right, as she does here, the results are quite stunning.
5-0 out of 5 stars When I sAy GeNiUS..
You Say: There are a few tard Muffins on this review pagE. Lyrically she is the profoundest and most talented of all we see today and yesterday, and song craft wise. Even a sarah MacLachlan cannot live up to the lyricism from an educated viewpoint, although the heartfelt reachineSs of sarah Makes up for that by far. Not to mention the charitible nature. This album has prevented suicides and provided wisdom and guidance. Night Visions understands the lowest poiNts of life. I'm not retarded when I hear Luka, I'm justified. as with the song "What's the Matter Here" by 10,000 MaNiacs. "Neighbor Hood Girls" IS me..It's off her first. Fancy Poultry/Iron Bound Market is one of the best songs ever because I wrote a similar diddy as a child, (exactly copying a the intro to the latter song without knowing about Susanne's years before..) Thank you dear for saving my life, and along with "Days of Open Hand", this cd is an insTruction manual for living. ... Read more

The mannered vocal style that has always been the most off-putting element of Ani DiFranco's music is still present on this two-disc live set, but for some reason it doesn't matter anymore. Maybe it's the way you can hear DiFranco using her breaths to accent a rhythm section that's downright merciless with its circling, pulsing, scary grooves. Or maybe it's the way, with an audience screaming, she pours heart and soul into "Unforgettable Face" and the story song "Gravel." Whatever, Read more

Nothing much to say more about this double, live album really: great voice, great guitar playing, a lot of passion (from the "urge to rock" to funny stories to "melodramatic" revelations to social cosciousnesses), wonderful band (the outstanding Sara Lee at the bass and Andy Stochansky at the drums), perfect production, beautiful booklet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A dark and ambient masterpiece
TO BRING YOU MY LOVE was PJ Harvey's third release and honestly I didn't know what to make of the album at first.I had heard that the band had split up and she was going it alone, with help from producer Flood (!).In a way I was prepared for a different sounding PJ Harvey but looking back I guess I had no idea HOW different.I had just come off quite a high with her first two albums, the excellent RID OF ME and the beautiful debut DRY.When I first caught sight of the cover I thought, "Waaahhh!"It looks like our dear lil Polly is all growns up, and quite the force to be reckoned with, fierce in that red dress.
3-0 out of 5 stars "Let me ride on his grace for awhile..."
PJ Harvey's third release, To Bring you My Love is a middle of the road album for me. It's more produced, which is fine by me, never really cared either way, more romantic, and her voice is at its strongest here but I don't love all the tracks. Standout tracks include: To bring you my love, Come on Billy, Teclo, The Dancer, Down by the Water, and the gorgeous Send his Love to Me. The rest of the tracks are weird and plain. PJ is one skinny woman, does she ever eat? I prefer Dry, Is this Desire?, and Stories from the city.... better. This album is considered her masterpiece and it's good, but it's not great.

Like some others who've posted here, I'm not necessarily an Ani-holic, but I have huge respect for her honesty and integrity, and the way she ran her career from a completely outsider approach into what is now a time-honored creative dynasty. She's not someone I listen to constantly, but I return to her regularly for a fix of the kind of blunt and exhilarating earnestness she represents.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fun, thoughtful, serious, and eye-opening album!!!
Background info before writing this review will probly help Ani fans reading it. I'm not an Ani fan in the sense of agreeing with all her messages and supporting the things she does. I am a fan, however, who admires her outspoken honesty. She knows exactly what she feels, thinks, and believes and isn't one bit afraid to put it out there & in your face. That takes guts, more power to her. This world we live in (especially this country, USA) could greatly benefit from exercising her unapologetic frankness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Different and Not to be missed
This was Ani DiFranco's first really synthesized, fancily-produced album. And it's a whole different world from the style she was known for before this. Listening to this is definitely like being introduced to a whole new artist. There are more electronics, more experimental song styles, and even her voice has changed a little -- it's a tad raspier.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Strong second album
Yes, it's not as good as musicforthemorningafter, but only because it doesn't have a song as good as 'Life On A Chain'.If you manage to overlook that problem, caused by the very high standards Mr Yorn has set for himself, this is a great, listenable album.None of the songs really rode high on radio, which is sad, because a few of them deserved to.My special favorites are Come Back Home, Crystal Village, and All At Once. There are few people who can do 'world weary' like Pete Yorn.I would have given 3.5 stars but Amazon doesn't let you do that, I couldn't quite bring myself to give it 4 stars.

Like Beth Orton's previous offerings, her third album makes a slight first impression. Sure, the jangly acoustic guitars, drifting melodies, and robust voice are pleasant enough, but it is only after a while that the true potency of the songs becomes apparent. "Nobody can keep you from the one you know you are," she sings quietly on "Mount Washington." Fueled by her mother's early passing, each of Orton's songs is accordingly anchored by a deep sense of sadness and loss. Despite the occasional electronic flourishes at the hands of collaborators such as the Chemical Brothers and Everything but the Girl's Ben Watt, and the beaming West Coast harmonies she shares with pal Ryan Adams, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting songs, maybe her best album
This may be Beth Orton's best album, because its standout songs--"Paris Train," "Mount Washington," "Daybreaker," and "Ted's Waltz"--might be her finest ever.Ethereal and haunting, they are just impossible to forget. "Mount Washington," in particular, is stunning, a heartbreaking song about loss and remembrance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thinking about tommorrow
She'd been waiting for us, she'd been creating for us.Following Beth Orton is an eternal game of "catch up".The one thing you'll see time and time again through the customer reviews of this album is that you've got to give it time.I'll weigh in on that thought with an observation. Usually we associate a plethora of producers and mixers with an attempt to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. There are many creative hands, all much-respected in music circles, contributing to this project.Beth herself seems aware of the impact this may have on a prejudicial audience, judging from the layout of the liner notes. It's virtually impossible at first blush to dissect the project by looking throught the liner. One has to study it time and time again (ideally while listening to the album) before one can get a grip on all the various collaborators and their exact contributions, or even the words to the songs themselves. As a result any opinions formed stand a greater chance of emanating from exposure to the music itself.
5-0 out of 5 stars This album is so much better than I first thought.
I picked this up on a whim, when it came out, and it would be my introduction to Beth Orton.I won't say too much, since it's been mentioned, but give this one several listens. It's very soothing from the start, but nothing catches you.But just listen again. It's probably my favorite album. It's one of those records if you listen to it, her voice is just incredibly human. Her lyrics switch between deep in a simplistic way, and sometimes possibly cheesy because of that simplicity, and then sometimes some abstract artsy imagery. If anyone else were to sing them, they would seem hollow and fake, like the soundtrack to a crappy movie, but her voice is what makes the lyrics - they provide a depth of emotion that makes them shine. The melodies and the instrumentation just fit the part so well.Like I said, nothing catchy, but it's soothingly melodic and haunting - but they do their jobs well - even when the instruments seem to overwhelm her voice - they do so in a way that still allows her voice to come through.Once you've gotten your ears around the songs on this album, you'll find they still retain their beauty in acoustic and live formats - without the sparkly, tinsle of studio. ... This reissue of Howie Day's self-assured debut, originally released independently in 2000, reveals a maturity beyond the young Maine singer-songwriter's age. Mixing gravelly vocals and somber strumming à la Joseph Arthur with the soaring power of Remy Zero and Dave Matthews Band and a touch of Radiohead fervor, Day's music is nonthreatening but far from wimpy. "She Says" combines plaintive acoustic guitar and bursts of vocal anguish, and the whispery "Disco" has dreamlike orchestras and a world-weary tone, while the lovely "Kristina" floats with a spare but intricate melody. Yet Day's maudlin tales of heartbreak have backbone--"Sorry So Sorry" ends in guitar-tossed turbulence, while "Everything Else" has biting riffs, and "More You Understand" builds to a crashing crescendo. Indeed, these injections of passion are what make Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This is an amazing cd. Howie Day has the poise and true talent that can never truly compare to others. I wish his new cd was better. It might be the most popular on this site, but listen to Australia. He doesn't have a full band and there's much more emotion. THE "SHE SAYS" ON THIS CD IS ACOUSTIC AND 20 TIMES BETTER. There's just so much feeling in his voice that it's almost like he's playing a private concert for you. Other highlights on this CD, besides "She Says," include: "Sorry So Sorry", "Ghost", "More You Understand", "Morning After", and "Disco". If you like this cd, get the Madrigals EP or in the opposite order. Howie Day is definitely a great singer-songwriter. His new CD does not do justice to his raw talent, so go for his older stuff if you've never heard him before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than most
I too was blown away by Howie's one man bandness at a Tori Amos show. Of all the singer/songwriters whose emergence have coincided with the newly refound brilliance of Nick Drake, Howie is the only one that doesn't come off as taking himself too seriously. His talent is unintentional and does not seem to be scripted. Plus he doesn't seem to be permanently stoned...

5-0 out of 5 stars Morning After
The cold stung right through my jeans, leaving a layer of frost across my butt that served to remind me of just how cold I really was. Ice scrapings shot at my seat on the bleachers, as I watched the groups of children skate with their instructors. I was bored and eager to leave the skating rink that had left my fingers numb and toes tingly. That was when I found Australia in my bag. I had never heard of Howie Day before, but his CD Australia was in my walk-man, having been left there by my friend taking the skating lessons. It was holding on track 9, the song Morning After.

PJ Harvey's second and most ferocious album finds her claiming images of sexuality, whether they're of a "hysterical" female (the obsessive title track and the indelible accusation "you leave me dry") or male "dominance" ("Man-Size," which also appears in an atonal arrangement with a string sextet, and the feral rockabilly size-brag of "50-Ft Queenie"). Recorded to play up the stark dynamic contrasts of Harvey's early trio, it's as harsh and abrasive as the gutter blues whose vocal style Harvey cops. And she demands a place for herself at the table of great songwriters--a hellfire take on Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" fits neatly alongside her own work. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Need to Shout!
PJ Harvey is cool because she makes really silly lyrics sound quite sincere (she has big soul). 'Legs' is one of her best songs ever and I really marvel her every time I hear it because she lets out howls and I don't. Not only that but this is one of the best album covers I've seen. P.S. If you really want to believe PJ Harvey is a very humble creature and not pomping her status of coolness don't see her music video for 'Good Fortune...' shameless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rawr.
Eh, angry chick rawk usually isn't my realm, but PJ Harvey has more than what it takes to stand out in such an inconsistent genre. And Rid Of Me is probably the favorite of the PJ albums I've heard so far (hey, it's produced by Steve Albini--were you expecting it to suck? C'mon now).

RID OF ME was PJ Harvey's sophomore effort and hands down, my favorite album of all time.Truly!I wish I could convey just how excellent this album is and how much it's changed my life but alas, words can never describe the experience of the wave of emotion and longing this album will hit you with.Even now, over a decade later, my heart still skips a beat whenever I anticipate hearing this CD.It is that good.

Ani, you outdid yourself on this one.Your heart beats in the languid grooves and has me on the verge of tears everytime this disc spins, down through the years. And that stands for something!
5-0 out of 5 stars The irony of why I love this CD just makes it that much better...
I never heard any Ani DiFranco music before I met my ex-boyfriend, so I didn't really know much about her. He was really into folk music, so he gave me this disc to listen to. Well I fell in love with her music right away. It was bouncy and fun, and lyrically it was like nothing else I had ever heard before. I love her style and how she paints a perfect picture with her words, so I was hooked. Well the ironic part is I swear either all guys are the same, or she was singing about my ex 99% of the time. I have never related more to a song before I heard the title track 'Dilate'. It became an anthem for a while, and when I hear it now 3 years later I start laughing to myself because it still feels so amazingly spot on.... "you are so lame, you always disappoint me, it's kind of like our running joke, except it's really not funny, and I just want you to live up to the image of you I've created, I see you and I'm so unsatisfied, I see you and I dilate"... "When I say you sucked my brain out, the English translation is I am in love with you and it is no fun".... I don't know, it's like she was in my head, and just had a better way of expressing exactly how I felt. Most of the songs had something about them that rang true to me, not just on this album though, the live disc 'Living in Clip' had many of the same songs and then some others that also seemed to be narrating my life at the time.

3-0 out of 5 stars I like it but...
This is a good cd but this artist has so much more substance live. Her accompanying guitar player was very expressive. I saw them live on (I think) soundstage and she was really good. These songs took on a different light in a live context.

4-0 out of 5 stars Folk-rock at its best
Having recently delved into the folk and folk-rock genres, I came upon Shawn Culvin.Had I known she was the singer-songwriter who sang "Sunny Came Home" I'd have probably gotten her CD a long time ago, since that song was hugely famous in my pre-teenage years. The aforementioned "Sunny" is brilliant in every sense, and definitely deserved its Grammy wins for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The rest of the album is surprisingly consistent; "Get Out Of This House" is darn near as listenable as "Sunny Came Home," but not quite."The Facts About Jimmy" is brilliant as well.A Few Small Repairs is definitely a worthwhile addition to any serious music fan's collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The haunting, enigmatic, 'Sunny Came Home' is
simply a masterpiece.A net search of various interpretations of this piece yeilds many of them.Art, good art, in my opinion, summons the listener's imagination and "Sunny Came Home" certainly does that. Especially the rendering of conscious and subconscious dialogue by Sunny. Oddly, the CD version is much better than what I initially heard on broadcast, which is an added plus for those of us who bought this album. It's also a tireless tune that does not get tiresome with each listening. Shawn's other songs on this CD are pretty darned good as well.Perfection is hard to describe but this is my best shot at describing "Sunny Came Home." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Give It A Chance
I was ready to write this one off, literally, after hearing it the first time, having written "no" next to where it was listed in my notes. So why did it keep haunting me?After a second, third, fourth listen, I became totally hooked.Runga's voice is so perfectly, crystal clear, and seductive, that she becomes absolutely irresistable.Jazz, piano pop, I don't know how to categorize this.It may take you a couple of listens, but if you like soft, intelligent jazz.pop.fusion, this may be for you.Five stars for the opening track, "Get Some Sleep," others get three, three 1/2, four ("Listening for the Weather"), but overall a four for this haunting cd.

3-0 out of 5 stars lots of potential
The melodies are pretty dry, but if you're a big Bic Runca fan, then this is another worthy CD.When I listen to the lyrics, I feel like they are each a story on their own.Written in a style that might be fitting for standard country tunes."Honest Goodbyes" gets my attention because some of the background instruments are placed so well. The flute or piccolo maybe it is, just captures the essence of the parting within the song. The lyrics don't grab me, even though they are well composed.I think the background noises probably help make this album a stand out for Bic Runga fans around, though I have not tried to concentrate so hard on the music to listen to every inkling.I like to be able to pick up on some things on a first or second listen, and this is not one of those type of CDs for me.

Bic Runga's "Beautiful Collision" should be a part of every music lover's collection. The very first track on the album "when I see you smile," is a great example of the artistry that is Bic Runga. The album is full of rich imagery about love and all its abstract complexities, which is evoked through Bic Runga's very soft voice, that often veers towards ages past but is quick to bring you to the the present. The stand out track on this album is "Gravity" which I encourage everyone to listen to and you will come to know as I do that Bic Runga has taken the hard path down a road that may not lead toward an exuhuberant amount of records sales. But she has done a very noble thing and reqarded her audience as intelligent and is giving us music that respects and entertains us and will forever mark us as followers of her path toward making her kind of art ... 5-0 out of 5 stars STILL HER BEST WORK....
Althgh I have nearly all of Shawn Colvin's albums & have seen her live twice, this album remains her best work to date. I am a great fan of her sound, music, lyrics - but somehow this album is most identifiable from the first cord. Ms. Colvin is a remarkable artist, poet. There are few artists like her and/or could be compared to her : Jann Arden comes to mind @ the moment. If anyone is curious about Shawn Colvin's music - I HIGHLY recommend this album to be where you shld begin your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wearing well with time
My first exposure to Colvin didn't come on this album or even with her pop hit "Sunny Came Home" (from A FEW SMALL REPAIRS). It was in a non-hit duet with Bruce Hornsby on "Lost Soul" (from his A NIGHT ON THE TOWN disc). The voice was clearly special and I checked our local library to see if they had anything by her. I fell in love with the disc and later added it to my own collection. Now, 16 years later I'm reassessing its merits.
5-0 out of 5 stars worth a listen
Thank goodness for brothers and sisters, otherwise I may have never discovered this cd.I heardthe song "steady on" playing at my sisters house and borrowed the cd. I have since bought it and several other cds by Shawn Colvinbut it is by far my favorite. I was happy to see Shawn have some comercial success with" A Few Small Repairs"But I would reccommend "Steady On " if you only buy one disc. Like one of the other people that reviewed this cd my tw favorite SC songs are "Diamond In The Rough"and "Shotgun Down The Avalanch" SDTA is a song that almost perfectly describes my feelings towards a dear friend. Its a song I wish I would have written, just like "solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel. Except I don't write songs. But really I think all the songs on Steady On are great. Its nice to think that Shawn Colvin is the type of artist that will be around awhile and another "Steady On" could be right around the corner. Its a cd you can buy right here on amazon for dirt cheap used. I am not endorsing Amazon I am endorsing Shawn Colvin. But what do I know??By the way, I got to see Shawn in Atlanta in concert along with Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and Bruce Hornsby, What a great line up and show..........Good Day!! ... Read more
