4-0 out of 5 stars Hot Champaign Music
Champaign, IL has been blessed with the outstanding band "Beezus." Unfortunately the women of this "chick band" have parted their ways. One great way to capture some of their great musicis by listening to this album. The songs are fantastic. Their cover of"Rebel Girl" is outstanding. The lyrics in "Keeper"really capture their feminist theme in many of their songs. If you enjoythis album, try to locate Beezus's first album...it's a little better thanthis album, but it's a tough call when you're comparing great withoutstanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one!!
This has just got to be the beginning of plenty more!5-0 out of 5 stars Rock, Pop n Roll
This CD defies any attempts at carving out a niche, revelling instead in bringing you some rock. From the pop of Welcome Mat, Those Questions, and Not Pretty Today to the blues and rock of Cheated this album is a celebration of a diversity of styles and how you can express yourself in them. Singer Kitty Kowabunga's voice has matured and is a knowing and strong accompaniment to her guitarwork. She seems to have been there and experienced it and is allowing you a vicarious ride with her feelings. At the same time the band is playing songs you can rock to. There are catchy hooks in Those Questions and Welcome Mat that make you bob your head and there is a driving guitar that will push you along on This Devil, with a mix of both sentiments on Did I Mention and a powerful guitar tribute to surf and rockabilly with Roadkill. The drumwork is really impressive and there is a real tightness in the percussive interplay between Leggy Limbeaux's bass and Betty Boomskins's drum kit. Trixie Riptide's guitar provides the hard edged low-end that rounds the sound of this quartet out. It's amazing how much this band has evolved since their self-released album, "Talk Your Way Out of This." The songs are more complex, using tempo changes and solos to make relatively short tracks seem to occupy more space than they do. They seem to be really exploring rock and pop and what they can contribute to both, not holding back in how they do it, using a Farfisa organ there or referencing a variety of influences in the guitarwork and melodies, from CCR to Liz Phair. Get yourself a copy of this CD, because these girls rock!

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting in a way....but not very good.....
This EP is extremely raw and unpolished...ALL the songs are repetitive, sloppy and dark. Hole would go onto display much greater music and this is really just the band in their beggining days, which makes it an interesting listen for a hole fan. There is creativity here, you can see the hole blueprint..the ideas are forming, but the band is still trying to come up with the music part(which can be described as a dark, brooding mess of grunge-punk, with disturbing, but not entirely bad lyrics) I would recomend for hole fans to pick this up to hear the band in their earliest incarnation...just dont expect to hear great music...step back into 1990 with the monster that was courtney and hole!

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtney has talent
Her later works do not give justice to how good of a talent she really has.Maybe not the best musician in the world, but I adore this CD. "Retard Girl" is a nasty angry song which i LOVE and it proves that Courtney has a great voice for this kind of music. The other two songs have the same disticnt punch to them, with heavy guitars and even heavier vocals. Everyone keeps complaining about how short this album is, which pisses me off because obviously people don't understand that it is an EP, and it isnt inteanded to be a full CD, its just like a single.

4-0 out of 5 stars "And I know all you b*tches by your Christian names!"
This EP is great, especially if you like earlier Hole from the 'Pretty On The Inside' days. The EP starts off with 'Retard Girl' which was Hole's very first single. Next is the fast punk of 'Phone Bill Song' which is one of my favorites. After that is 'Turpentine' which was the very first song Hole ever recorded (supposedly in someone's basement in 1990). This is a killer track, and hands down the best track on the EP. It's strange that this song has more melody than a lot of the songs that followed it, though. The last song is 'Johnnies In The Bathroom' which is brilliantly creepy. It's a spoken track like 'Sassy' and 'Starbelly' from 'Pretty On The Inside'. I think it's about young girls being prostituted and lured by the dangers of fame or something like that. I would have given this EP more stars but only problem: it's too short! I know it's an EP and all but it would be nice if it had 'Dicknail' and 'Burn Black' on it. Oh well. Enjoy the interview, which also features Hole's original bassist Jill Emery and original drummer Caroline Rue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fifth with improvement
"All Hands on the Bad One", Sleater-Kinney's fifth album, really needs no introduction...this album is excellent. With more of a rock and roll twinge and a poppy feel, this album is very different from their last effort, "The Hot Rock", but both have their merits. This album is beautiful, triumphant, and political. On "#1 Must Have", they take a look at the media's effects on the feminist revolution, in "You're No Rock and Roll Fun" we get a taste of some real rock and roll...and of course, the highlight of this album is the song that is not contained on the American release of "All Hands on the Bad One"..."Maraca"...this song was released in America as a single, but it is great to have it easily accesible in CD format. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars awesome lesbo rock!
I love this cd, I bought it on a whim. I had heard samples and thought it would be a good add to my riot grrl collection, little did I know that it would become one of my all time favorite cd's.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Yes, It's Good"
Definitely a few degrees off from the genre of their first full-length, "Card Carryin'", The Third Sex substitutes less punk noise for a newer wave sound without losing a beat. The dual-vocals of singers Peytonand Trish are more expressive and octave this time around, and the lyrics, while still gay-friendly, are more reaching to a 'straight but not narrow'audience as well.Once I stopped listening to "Maul," thebeautiful opening track, I discovered "Wonderful Life," theperfect anti-commercial/capitalist/holiday song, and "Back ToGo," a new personal favorite. While the sounds on this record vergefrom the classic garage punk riffs on their first full-length, The ThirdSex stills delivers to their fans: lyrics, instruments, vocals, and a jazzycover sleeve to make new and faithful listeners wanna join The Third Sex,too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Grr
For those of you who know the song "All By Myself," from Eric Carmen, you can just skip this. For those of you who don't, the song "All By Myself," which is featured on this (excellent) album is a cover of a song which was recorded a long time ago by a weenie.Yes, I know, that's harsh, but whether you liked it or not, Eric Carmen was a weenie. The original is the epitome of whining alone-ness, but it's definitely too sissy to be angsty.

Babes in Toyland is unique, and Kat's voice is one powerful growl that is damn right pretty. The lyrics are fitting, and Kat always sounds like she knows exactly what she's talking about. 5-0 out of 5 stars the babes pull another surprise out of the hat
this album is the babes heavy metal album, it rocks! oh yeah is amazing, sweet '69 is a complex joke, SFW is angry punk and we are family is a crowning glory.the album is different to the rest of their material, butisn't that a good thing that a band can change their sound a bit and stillrock. i mean, Hole released c.skin which didn't rock, so its not true toevery band, but the babes keep it fresh by changing their sound. the albumis the best, and everyone should buy it now! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "Just remove the hateful tissue..."
Hole's My Body, The Hand Grenade is truly an unique album of sorts. Not sure how to describe this record, this disc features some of Hole's early recordings such as Turpentine, Phonebill Song, Retard Girl and many more. I prefer their later sound such as the albums Live Through This and Celebrity Skin. The debut album, Pretty on the Inside is not one of my favorites from their career so some of the pre-Live Through This tracks sure as hell don't blow me away. The songs I do enjoy on My Body include: Season of the Witch, He Hit Me (It felt like a Kiss), Beautiful Son, 20 Years in the Dakota, Softer Softest (Live), and the gorgeous and non-screaming anthem, Old Age. Courtney's vocals shine on Old Age, of course I have heard this song was orginally a Kurt Cobain throw-away but Love sings this song with earnest and integrity. A great album for hard-core Hole fans, god I wish they were still together, they were one of the best grunge/rock bands of the '90s. Also check out Love's first solo disc, America's Sweetheart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fuses It All Together
I couldn't find this album anywhere, except here on the internet. When I played it, I was sort of surprised. This album sort of links all of Hole's albums together. For example, "Beautiful Son" and "20 Years In The Dakota" were recorded between the time of Pretty On The Inside and Live Through This. You can almost see Hole evolving into different styles. It's very interesting. This album has tracks from all over Hole's career (before Celebrity Skin, that is). You can see how Hole was going to write their final album, through the evolving sounds. If you like their music, I highly recommend this!

3-0 out of 5 stars Old Age

Great CD single from the best punk band today! 5-0 out of 5 stars 3 of their best
"Get Up" and "By the time yr 25" are such good riot girl pop. Both b sides are great, better than a lot of the songs that made it onto the Hot Rock (which was fairly disappointing after hearing this EP).

4-0 out of 5 stars What's the score?
A fantastic single from Sleater-Kinney. "Get Up" is one of the sexiest songs (really, just pay attention to the lyrics!) and "By the Time You're Twenty-Five" is an irresistable slab of, and I hate this term, pop-punk.Read more
