5-0 out of 5 stars Rock at it's finest
I got this album when I worked at a record store, and I must say it blew me away. These women know how to rock.Just give 'Truck Stop Hussy' a listen. Not for anyone looking for the average pop-sensible no-talent Britney/Jessica dance music. This is for people tired of wasting time and money on music with no soul. This album will plant itself in your psyche.Brava, Ladies.

4-0 out of 5 stars These women are rockin'!
My boyfriend got this album when his old store closed(he worked in a music store, and the owner gave him some of the promotional stuff)He played it for me and as he attempted to sing along with these women, I realized thatthe lyrics were just awesome, and perfect! The entire overall attitude isso emotional. Some of this stuff is really strange, but it just laeves mewanting more! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just rape the world because you can.............
Waow what can I say! This is deffinatly my favourite Hole song ever!!!....The lyrics are powerful and the irony of the song is brilliant. Hole lyrics have always been very controversal and thought provoking, this track is certinaly no exception. I would reccomend it to any Hole fan. If you like their other stuff, you'll love this.

4-0 out of 5 stars CAUSE NO ONE CARES IF YOU'RE A MAN
irony never sounded so golden. get this one, and let it sparkle in your stereo.

2-0 out of 5 stars what happened to bratmobile?
So the little sisters of Riot Grrrl have grown up . . . . and gotten boring. Don't get me wrong, they're still witty and political, but Bratmobile have lost their raucous charm. In their first LP Pottymouth, released on Kill Rock Stars in 1993, they couldn't play their instruments very well, but it didn't matter. Erin Smith's sloppy but strong guitars and Allison Wolfe's quirky screaming vocals gave Pottymouth a fun reckless energy characteristic of a punk temper tantrum. As for their latest, Girls Get Busy, Bratmobile have traded messy guitars for production slickness, Allison's snarling vocals for a generic punk lecture tone, and funny lyrics for mature social commentary. Bratmobile is more political in this release, and should be commended for taking a stand against post 9/11 commercialism and blind patriotism in songs like "Shop for America" and "United We Don't," but the switch proves awkward for an aging band still trying to remain relevant post-revolution. I feel bad for wincing upon hearing this album, but I just can't help feeling sorry for a band trying so hard to mature beyond the image and sound of their early days that fans will remember them for. Those of you itching for new Bratmobile, your best bet is to leave this one on the store shelf and go back home to your dusty Pottymouth CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good To Have Them Back
The only thing better than having Bratmobile back in action is having Bratmobile back in action and more political and creative than ever before!Hearing Bratmobile lash out against the current war-mongering and blind, patriotic flag-waving restored my faith in the scene they helped build but has been sadly inching itself away from politics. But with bands like Bratmobile, Le Tigre, and the Butchies - each stocked with established riot grrl veterans and dedicated activists - out on the road and in the studio, the revolutionary energy seems to be on it's way back in. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Chamber music for the indie-rock set
With cello, contrabass and drums, Bonfire Madigan appears to be a group of indie-rockers who never could shake the classical music training of their youth.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
this album is light years ahead of bonfire madigan's first album ("From the Burnpile").i found that album to be somewhat lacking in terms of consistency and production.sure there were some great songs, but i got the sense that it was merely a collection of songs, not a fullfledged album.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vomit my heart
This is the CD that got me hooked.Heart, soul, mean, screaming, poetry, wild instrument playing. I bought Fontanelle first, but it was a little too polished to really get to the grit of the band.Even though the sound on this is way too quiet, all of the songs are passionate with rage. For a first album, Babes really prove that they have what it takes to make music.
5-0 out of 5 stars ohmygod
This album is incredible! Every female rock fan on the planet should be given a copy of this CD, and ordered to think about it.
4-0 out of 5 stars sexy girls
They are annoying, succeed in being utterly horrible (quoting my brother) and beneath, what is a consistent sound the whole way through (one that gives off the impression that it was banged out with the same mic setup rather quickly) is some psychological energy caught on the tape, albeit most scarce.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its not that good..
I remeber when I first read about the band, I was intrigued and bought the album. I think the album has its moments like the first 3 tracks, but then after that it kind of goes downhill...It just seems like the band gets stuck in a monotonous rythem and it just stays their, in other words, it gets boring...If you wanna get hardcore by girls, check out L7, they destroy this band. 4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
Kaia's self-titled solo album(she's the lead singer of the group the Butchies) is a simple, lovely acoustic folk effort.I still get the shivers when she sings "...these chairs...they hold me like I wish you would hold me" in "16," and the "I'm still waiting for you" part in "No Sides."Good stuff.

Gotta love the Brats. This is my personal favorite out of thier albums. Athough it may be short, it's full of power!
5-0 out of 5 stars "We're gonna kill Spur Posse Boys"
'The Real Janelle' would be the last music released from Bratmobile for the next six years. I know some people have complained this CD is too short, but remember it's an EP not an LP. The craftsmanship is a big step up from the messy 'Pottymouth'. The production is more clear and Bratmobile are more noisy than ever before. I would have loved if they would have made a full length album during this time, because it seems like they were at their peak here. All the songs are standouts, particularly the wounded and abused 'And I Live In A Town Where The Boys Amputate Their Hearts'. I especially enjoy their cover of The Misfits 'Where Eagles Dare'. Great CD, it's worth every penny. It's short, but it will take a bite out of ya. So let it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sweet but a little too short
Bratmobile sound like a renegade girl surfing band that make menacing music. I like to think of this sort of brand of indie punk (otherwise deemed "riot grrrl") as the ideal soundtrack for a queer James Bond flick. That flick would be known as The Real Janelle. And #1 off this CD would be the theme. Though considering how most of the Bond themes are usually brooding or downbeat, "Yeah, Huh?" might be a better choice. Spy mysteries, criminal serials, teen flick parodies - they all would do this music some good exposure.

Editorial Review

For all the noisy bluster involving plastic barrettes, thrift-store guitars, and caterwauling political catchphrases, Sleater-Kinney have always been pragmatic about their music. The group's self-titled debut got by on ferocity alone. But each successive release has exhibited a dramatic step forward as youthful exuberance gives way to melody and poise. Read more

Sleater-Kinney have never sold out. From the sound of things, they aren't planning to either. They are not just any girl band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
The limited edition CD includes 2 extra songs.Lions and Tigers being by favorite. It starts out with a spattering of winding up a music box and other toy game sounds, sounding almost dreamlike or underwater. The song is very light hearted with lyrics like "Monkeys in the trees they eat bananas too fast.Lions and the tigers hunt in the grass." and "When it pours it really rains, so put on your boots and let's play".Get the limited edition version for this song.2-0 out of 5 stars ehh....wishy washy
It's ok, in my opinion Sleater Kinney has strayed so far from riot grrl, they don't even riot anymore. They're just a talented female rock band. For us Sleater Kinney collecters it's deffinetly something to own, but if you're new to them... start with Call the docter, or self titled. The best part about this album is Stephen Trasks envolvment in it! If you are interested in him check out Hedwig and the Angry Inch. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The 'Caveman' of Cake Like
Just like everyone else, I didn't know this band existed until hearing them on Viva Variety.Personally, I find this CD to be my least favorite of the three. The style is very raw, but the overall mood is that whimsical, angry-girl mood that I sometimes feel the need to listen to.Generally I prefer singing to yelling, and Delicious has a lot of yelling. The packaging is cool, with the white and silver changing when you hold them up to the light and move the angle of the case a little bit.Its nice to listen to their CDs in order and hear their growth as musicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!
I, like the other reviewer, heard of this great band from viva variety and FELL IN LOVE WITH THEM!!! They are truly one of the greatest female rock bands to ever have existed. This album is excellent from begginning to end and then back again. If you have any sense at all you will buy it and then listen to it til you go insane.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing grrrrl rock!!
This album is soooooo great!! It is the first - and best - of Cake Like's recordings. I originally picked up Bruiser Queen, their second album, after seeing Kerri Kenney (of The State fame) and her band play "Lorraine's Car" on Viva Variety, the short-lived sketch comedy/variety show in which she starred. That album was so great, I ordered this one straight from the distributor, at a whopping $38. Apparently, it's been re-released since then, lucky for you!! It is impossible to describe Cake Like's music - when they started the band, none of the three women could play an instrument, so the music is raw, and the lyrics are witty, intelligent, angry at times, ever so amusing, and great to sing along with. The vocals are so amazing, like Siouxsie Sioux meets Kate Bush meets PJ Harvey meets Juliana Hatfield. Or something. Pick this one up - I promise you will NOT be disappointed! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sick 'Em
Despite the awful music that reigned on mainstream radio, the '90s ruled. I discovered a whole 'nother side to music. The underground counter culture. I discovered punk music. I thrived on music that was as angry as heavy metal but didn't cater to the meatheads that metal attracted at their concerts. Punk was for the disenchanted and alienated like me. One of my favorite underground punk bands was 7 Year B***h. Unfortunately they also fell victim to tragic circumstances when their guitarist Stefanie Sargent overdosed on heroin (and she wouldn't be the last musician in that era to OD on the powerful narcotic). "Sick 'Em" is by far my favorite album of theirs (out of the two that I owned by them). The music was angry, fast, and ferocious. Selene Vigil had a set of pipes that could rival most men. She was far more edgier than Courtney Love could ever be. Valerie Agnew is another great drummer whose talents could rival a lot of male drummers. With bassist Elizabeth Davis, Valerie and Elizabeth gave 7 Year B***h the backbone in the music with their intense rhythmic beats. All the songs on the album is great It is really difficult for me to pick a favorite track out of them although I really do like "Tired of Nothing" which became my theme song over the years, especially when I was in high school. And for keeping me sane through out those awful years, I thank Selene, Valerie, the late Stefanie, and Elizabeth for their wonderful music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Check your good, clean fun at the door...!
First off, let me say that this is an excellent piece of work, period.Women of Sodom could be a force to be reckoned with in the arena of female-lead electro acts...if they had more exposure and maybe cranked out a little more music.Having visited their website, I've seen the photos of their blistering S&M shows and I cannot wait for them to tour through my city."Boots" is probably the most traditionally industrial sounding track on the album."Jews and Arabs Become Friends" has sort of a Dead Can Dance-esque Middle Eastern sound to it that I really enjoyed."The Doctor Song" gave me the creeps for some time -- just the thought of that...ugh! -- it's lyrics telling a story about being examined in front of a roomful of medical students, with lines like, "Put on the rubber gloves!" and "This might hurt a bit...""Valentine For Jesus" is a slow, beautiful, and utterly blasphemous song with layered vocals and some intriguing similes.Overall, though, all of the songs are entertaining and well-crafted.Ilsa von Bulow and Xavier Dietrich II (who wrote the lyrics and the music, respectively) thanked their mentor, John Zewizz of Sleep Chamber, in the liner notes.I suppose that if you're a fan of Sleep Chamber, you would most likely enjoy Women of Sodom as well. Both bands share the same sexually "deviant" idiom.
