4-0 out of 5 stars P.R.D.C.T.
Bratmobile's debut album "Pottymouth" is a riot grrrl classic.Allison Wolfe is bratty, immature, yet silly and fun all at once. The songs really put a smile on my face when I'm in a bad mood. For example, "F*** Yr Fans" "Cool Schmool" and "Panik" are really interesting pieces of songwriting.Their lesbian infused cover of "Cherry Bomb" is also quite appealing. This is a good place to start if yr interested in Bratmobile.Oh, by the way, the tracks I don't care for are "Richard" and the 14th track (think it's the one where F*** Yr Fans is sung in a different language.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fifteen with skinned knees...
This is one of those records that really speaks for you when you are a teenaged girl with no interest in ever going home to your parents, and with the desire to stay out with your tough girl friends and boys in Dead Kennedy t-shirts.This record sits between your Bikini Kill and your Go-Go's.This is juvenile and juicy and pissed off.I'm 26 now, but Bratmobile still reminds me of life when I didn't care about anything but marinating in my girlishness and self-proclaimed indestructibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Madonna in her underwear, you should be in too..."
Bratmobile's music sounds like The Go Go's meets Bikini Kill meets X-Ray Spex. Bratmobile's lyrics are sure to crack a smile on your face, even if you're an old conservative. Their take on relationships, love, gender, race, and the punk scene (of the early '90s) is charming, sarcastic, and full of wit. It's something that seperates them from their snarling peers of the day like Bikini Kill and Heavens To Betsy. Finally, some rock with some humor. My favorite songs are Cherry Bomb (this was originally done by The Runaways), Throway, P.R.D.C.T., Some Special, F*ck Yr Fans, Panik, Richard, Cool Schmool, Juswanna, and Queenie. Heck, I love 'em all. Liz Phair and Alanis Morissette may have impressed music reviewers in the '90s but bands like Bratmobile were around before these artists even cracked the charts. Riot Grrrl bands and female-fronted grunge bands have been overlooked and when people think about women in '90s rock, they only think about the boring Lilth Fair. How incorrect this is, as women were rocking long before then. And doing it better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool little record, but no soda pop
"Inzombia" admittedly has some of Slant 6's best tracks (of their disappointingly small two album discography), but it also has their worst. Some of these tracks really rock and showcase that flair only Slant 6 seems to capture, a retro-style girl punk that has attitude without coming off as cheezy or pretentious. Unfortunately, tracks like "Retro Duck" and the album's much too long title track are songs to skip--and this coming from someone who believes skipping tracks is ordinarily a punishable offence in music listening. I'm not telling you not to buy it; it's good, but it lacks the consistently mind-blowing song-writing that "Soda Pop-Rip Off" has, as well as uniformity as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inzombia Will Enchant You
Edgy but smooth, with infectious lyrics and melodies. If you even think you might be interested in Slant 6 this CD is where you should start. It won't leave your CD player for weeks. LadyBug Superfly and Victim of YourOwn Desires are amazing tracks that will stick in your head forever. Istill catch myself humming LadyBug in the shower, a few years after thefirst time I listened to it. The whole CD is a little on the dark side, ithas a mesmerizing quality. If you like Grrl Groups that rock with greatvoices and intelligent lyrics, I promise you will love this CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the smartest Riot Grrrl albums
Shall we say the ur-Sleater-Kinney?Sure Becca's voice isn't as haunting as Corin's, and CJ's drumming isn't as virtuoso as Janet's, but you hearthe heart and soul of SK--smart beyond the heads of the britneyspears/spice girls crowds (how is he says he feels your pain/he felt minetoo), and the killer guitar from Carrie Brownstien. Even though it's notquite Sleater-Kinney, it still gets a 5 star rating for Decatur HS, andDrop Dead Look.Drop Dead Look at only 1:46, is riot grrrl punk distilledinto an espresso shot, so good, I wrote a lengthy short story by itsinspiration. And if you listen to this album in the dark, you'll see bloodand pain dripping from the album cover, it's that powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excuse 17 - best indie rock around
Excuse 17's second album "such friends are dangerous" really shines. The recording quality is brilliant for an indie label.Becca's vocals cut down to the bone. Allowing the listener to feel the lyricsrather than jusr hear them.Songs like "watchmaker" really rock, while songs like "nervousness never fades" are very emotional andhave a great melody.I enjoyed hearing a female band with strong opinionsaddress something other than just men or feminism.I would recommend thiscd to anyone who likes "Sleater Kinney".I think Excuse 17 arefar better, that just my opinion though.I really like Becca's voice. They broke up so get it while you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historic
If there was a single compliation of "Grunge" this would be it. Between Bikini Kill, Infamous Menagere and Nirvana, you really get a sense of what was going on during the early 1990s. I don't think it is over thetop to say that this is a slice of music revolution. 5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly The Best Ever.....
Cool? Very. Rock? You got it. This is possibly the best compilation ever. Bikini Kill is always a must along with Witchypoo and Bratmobile, but when you add the element of Heavens To Bety's "My Red Self", it's thesalt of the recipe which is a much needed dose to eat it up. Trust me,you'll want to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Babe Killers? HELL YEAH!
Well hi I own this cd, I bought it in Toronto for 21 bucks! what a rip, but anyway this cd is great, it's all live and filled with new stuff and old stuff. My favorite song off this cd is Spun..it's great because Kat's voicing makes your spine chill.I love her screams! If you like BIT you will definitely love this album, I mean come on look at the price! How can you beat that?!?!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, lots of old stuff and some new
I have always been a babes in toyland fan. They combine innocence with somevery female hard music.Plus they know how to make sweetness and light withsongs such as (we are family). This 2 cd set is a must have for all babesfans. They also have (and always will have occut undertones.Kat Bjelland andCourtney Love used to have a group together if you need any indication onwhat kind of sounds babes play, yet they have stuck with the harder tunes.Ireally think this is a must have for all fans. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars best of huggy bear
Hailed from the UK, this is the last album (I'm pretty sure) to be released by huggy bear, and I think it is by far their best. The band had initially been this boy-girl cute punk stuff, they even did a split lp with bikini kill.Weaponry, however, was a complete departure from their old style and they became much more moving and expressive.I bought it about 6 years ago when I was 16, and it has followed me through quite a few turns in taste.I still love it.The music is complex and interesting, fresh, and the only sound of it's kind, as far as I'm concerned.(though it could probably be be compared to later unwound, like "repetition" for instance).Don't let their name throw you, I think it's supposed to be humorous.Just listen to the tracks. You might be able to listen to the bikini kill split here at amazon as well.I don't think huggy bear reached their creative genius on the split album, though many people consider that album to be the best of huggy bear.I think weaponry is better, but maybe I'm just being sentimental. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars le tigre train?
this album is really pretty disappointing. the group has lost a chick, added a dude, and.... guitars. alot of guitar. so it's like, gravy train!!!! wanted to be more of a "band" or something. it sounds like knockoff le tigre with chanty punky sounding songs. no funny rap songs to be found here. and lead singer "chunx" seems to be singing WAY too much. homegirl aint got the best voice, and i wish she wouldve stuck with funny rapping with uber-homo "hunx". no fun "you made me gay" or "double decker supreme" here. which totally sucks cuz the other train!!!! album totally rules. it had a real diy, badly-recorded quality that made it feel way cult-y. this album sounds like it was produced to sound lo-fi on purpose. oh well. their live shows still rule.

5-0 out of 5 stars loves it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure punk rock genius
I just got this CD yesterday, and i've been listening to this non-stop. I even had a hard time sleeping, since I had song lyrics running through my head all night long!My absolute favorite is the cool, classic tough punk rock chick anthem "Catatonic",which has the catchiest lines ("one two three four five-glad youre not alive, six seven eight nine ten, back to hell again"),and the best vocals and instrumentals. My NEW favorite Babes in Toyland song."Laugh my Head Off" is another great song, along with"Spit to see the Shine," and "The QUiet Room".This album's version of"Mad Pilot" is easier to listen to than "Fontanelle's" version. "Ripe" is a classic Babes song, and its catchy and it rocks at the same time. The only sond I dont like is "primus" I love the instrumentals,I just don't like Lori Barbero's singing. This album is a definite 5,and even though I love the harsh "Spanking Machine" debut, this one is more melodic, yet it still retains the wildchild rock feel.Sometimes Kat's genius gets lost in overextended screams, and her lyrics are so deep and complex, but they do tend to get lost under he screaming.I know theyre punk, but sometimes its a shame. On "to Mother",Kat's voice takes on a whole new level, one that rivals "Fontanelle,"even though this record precedes it.ANyway,I recommend this album to anyone, espe first time Babes listeners.Go buy it you'lllove it!

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 Stars but Definetly Worth Getting
Very raw and thrashy. It's so much fun to scream along too.5-0 out of 5 stars why you should buy this album
in my humble opinion, Babes in toyland is the best 3 piece punk band ever, and i love to turn people on to them whenever i get the chance. while theres no such thing as a bad babes album, i would stongly recomend To Mother to anyone unfamiliar with their music as a good introduction to them.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars hmm...
Well, I understand if you are not into pop sounding music. But, not all feminist bands are suppose to have one sound to them. It's about being open minded I thought. I think we should appreciate it and not alienate the difference in sound...because aren't we all on the same level of feminist belief? Besides all that this is a good album, which would be the only album I have heard of theirs. Thanks for reading my review.

2-0 out of 5 stars a bit too poppy for my taste really.

Always on the lookout for new CD's with real grrrl power (and not the spice girls kind either!)I reccently bought this CD and have not stoped listening to it since. 4-0 out of 5 stars very impressive debut album
olympia's bangs impress on their debut album, tiger beat. a melting pot of ac/dc, bangles, and maybe black sabbath if they weren't so dark and angry sounding.this album is intoxicatingly catchy, while rocking at the same time.with guitar solos that seem to go to outer space but come back at the right time. the nice thing about this album is that it is the perfect length.it ends leaving you wanting more, but knowing that if there were more songs at the end of the album you would be tired from rocking out to long. their new album sweet revenge is pretty good too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sounds like...everything else...
We wanna be just like yew. To lame to create their own sound The Bangs are content with medocrity and the status quo. Don't waste your time, there are plenty of other Oly bands who are much more worthy than this second rateschlock. The only thing good about this band is their drummer Jesse Fox. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars play another heartstring
I have always thought that cello rock is an extremely interesting and bizarre genre of music. After discovering its existance with bands like Rasputina, I was hooked. Bonfire Madigan's first full-length album, From The Burnpile, not only has a cello, but has, unlike Rasputina, guitars, drums, organ, contrabass, and turntables. Bonfire Madigan has a indie rock kind of accessibility, also unlike Rasputina with their strange humor. Lead singer/songwriter/cellist Madigan Shive's voice is not only gorgeous, but distinct, expressive, and emotional, like the cello itself, in fact. Shive's voice, in songs like "Snowfell Summer," jump from sweet to fiery to delicate and papery. In "For Life Long" she is hyperactive, voice range jumping all over the scale. Just before the song's climactic finish, after Shive first coaxes us with her original spirt, building steadily out of a soft, barely-there bridge, she falls into an urgent whisper which almost immediately shifts into a cat-like shriek. This alternates back to an even softer whisper before the sound becomes huge and full with Madigan Shive's vibrant command - "Don't you go away from me!" Madigan Shive does write beautiful lyrics, which compliment her voice tremendously. Whether fierce ("I refuse to be a window display today") or sweet ("I'm trying to write you a love song because I know it's time you heard one") or amusing ("Junebug, get outta my cello") or just poetically and visually interesting ("We were burned by that brand new snow"), Shive's voice and lyrics are always tied beautifully with the music. This album proves that the cello is indeed appropriate and welcome for all moods. It weeps in "Promised" and dances in "Backseat Buoy" and laughs in "Junebug." Songs like "Anthemic Amendments" make appropriate use of the turntables and sampling. Even with only ten tracks, Bonfire Madigan's From The Burnpile proves not only to be amazing and beautiful, but defiantly eclectic. Anyone who appreciates the cello or an intriguing voice will enjoy this album. This amazing recording proves true "Tinikling On A Tightrope"'s repeated sampling that "change is good, necessay, and inevitable."

4-0 out of 5 stars burned by the brand-new snow.
possibly the most stunning piece of contemplative, universal art-folk since Drake's _Pink Moon_, Bonfire Madigan's Kill Rock Stars debut _...From The Burnpile_ paints a bitter, hopeful, and unusually danceable view of modern queer life. The sort of disc you'd want to hear in the vintage shop on the other side of town that you never get a chance to go to until finally you do and find the perfect $10 shirt. Highly reccomended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bonfire Madigan makes a statement
I've been enthusiastically listening to Madigan perform live and hearing her recordings for many years, and this is by far the best thing she's put out - with her band Bonfire Madigan, solo or with Tattle Tale (no slight toJen Wood intended).I think Madigan will continue growing as an artist andshe will do better (this is still a shoestring budget indie production),but it really is a great CD. Certain songs definitely stand out as winners- "Anthemic Amendments", "Snow Fell Summer" and"Smoke Signals from the Burnpile" leap to mind. The CD makesgreat use of Madigan voice, Sheri Ozeki's bass and the beats provided byTomas and Sunshine Haire.Unfortunately, the amazing Shelley Doty is underutilized on guitar. She adds incredible textures that are buried too lowin the mix. This version of "Backseat Buoy" pales by comparisonto the original on the 7 inch single put out by K Records - the originalincludes Sheri's haunting bassline, and Shelley's guitar can actually beheard. On the up side, "Anthemic Amendments" not only is alyrical powerhouse, it packs a punch by counterbalancing Madigan'sdefiantly expressive delivery on vocals with Shelley's richly soulfulvoice.Madigan's written some powerful songs here, is a dynamic performerof style and substance, and has put together a wonderful array ofsupporting talent.I've listened to this CD over and over again, and whileit's not perfect, if you're interested in an innovative band that makes astatement lyrically and makes you want to move musically, then BonfireMadigan's "...from the Burnpile" is a wonderful choice. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Alright let's look.
I admit it, this is not the best compilation album. I suggest you only buy this if you know what you are getting into, this isn't for anyone new to the music. And uh, "Music Fan" or whatever, if you honestly think that 'grunge' brought about the whole glam pop thing you need to seriously take a closer look, grunge did nothing to bring about glam pop it has existed for years. If I remember correctly Nirvana are the guys who knocked Micheal off the top of the pop charts? And yeah, Grunge is slow, the guitars are played really screwy and the the lyrics are dark...I prefer ameteurs playing that's what punk was about I thought? Look at the Ramones...At any rate the cd is ok the scene itself was awesome.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sub Pop creates an aura
Another Sub Pop compilation filled with as many "lesser" bands as household names. Not quite the quality (in the music or the packaging) as the Sub Pop 200 re-issue, but a nice snapshot of what came to be known as The Grunge Era.
4-0 out of 5 stars a sound piece of grunge history.
Anyone that says the only well known artist on this compilation is Nirvana is incredibly unfamiliar with the grunge genre.Let's not forget Mark Lanegan and the Screaming Trees, Afghan Whigs, Mudhoney, etc, all just as noteworthy in the genre's history.

4-0 out of 5 stars revolutionary listening
Huggy bear were an explosive UK band whose music embraced the sounds of noisy punk rock with the voice of a revolutionary manifesto. the songs on Taking The Rough With The Smooch are in the vein of a more spazzed-out X-Ray Spex and even some old Sonic Youth sound (as evident on "Sizzlemeet" which sounds like it could have been one of the more racious tracks off of Daydream Nation). the vocals are intense and screamy and each song takes it's turn scrutinizing society's ills with an emphasis on personal (and mostly gender-specific) politics. while most of the songs are spikey, punked-out mini anthems, a few cuts are surprisingly thoughtful in their sound; such as the dreamy "Concrete Life" which romanticizes some fantasy involving violence toward a cop and then goes on to lament that "i'd rather cut off my arms off than see you going out with him." it comes across as being both tender, sleazy, and a little creepy. but with it's creaky guitar and random radio waves lulling along in the background, it's one of the standout tracks on the album. this is a really cool little record and an interesting artifact from the days of the Riot Grrl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riot Grrrl in top form
An amazing example of what happens when noise-rock meets politics.A fast gut wrenching album that more people need to listen to.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm still baffled.
I bought this c.d. at a used record store not knowing what to expect (it was in a 6 c.d. for $5 bin). However, being intrigued simply by the cover, I had to check it out.Yes, the c.d. is only 22 minutes long (with 12 tracks, each track is, on average, 1.8 minutes long). However, each track seems *longer* than it actually is.I listened to this odd hodgepodge of punk, screaming, fighting, poetry, etc. by a group called huggy bear and felt as if I had just listened to a longer album. It has an entrancing effect.I had feared I would get no information on this unique band, but here I am.This record will blow you away.It will definitely be an oddity for the collection of everyone w/ an open mind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SERIOUS STUFF !!!
Well I have to disagree with the reviewer who find this album to be a ?part 2?to the 1st one. It?s not.In ?Baby Sitters...?the4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Faint at Heart
I bought this CD no more than 2 weeks ago. This was the last one which helped me complete my 5-album Lunachicks collection. This came out in 1992 (the year that marked the height of Grunge) and I can best describe "Binge & Purge" as being "Babysitters on Acid -- Part 2" because of its similar raw, acidic guitar sounds. The reason I decided to give this 4 stars is because even I got grossed out by some of the content: I warn future buyers that out of all the records the band released in the 90's, this one marks the peak of juvenile disgust by tackling about every bodily fluid imaginable. The title song "Binge & Purge" should be listened to by teenage girls as a method of staying away from Bulimia; in no more than 3 minutes, B&P describes in graphic detail how repeatedly forced regurgitations (often done in secret) can ultimately kill a girl in the end. And then there's "Plugg," which is the first (and not the last) song about PMS (flow and all!) But alot of the other tracks are cleverly written, including "Mom" and "This is Serious" 5-0 out of 5 stars This is serious, the Lunachicks will make you delirious....
Binge and Purge, being the Lunachicks second album, is a great follow-up to Babysitters On Acid. As Binge and Purge maintains a harder edge that was present in the sound of Babysitters On Acid, it shows a more creative and playful choice of lyrics. Songs such as "This is Serious" and "Binge and Purge" uplift this album from the darker songs "Apathetic" and "Whole Lotta B.S." "This is Serious" incorporates a jingle from an old anti-drug commercial. Listen carefully and you'll be able to spot it.If you liked Babysitters on Acid, you'll love Binge and Purge; but if you've just recently heard Lunachicks with their recent albums "Luxury Problem" and "Pretty Ugly," this album will take a little getting used to.It's a great album none-the-less.Everyone who listens to it is sure to find something on this album that they'll love. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars cake like review
about half of the songs on this album are really good... we're talking GREAT songs... the kind that get overplayed on the radio until everyone hates them.but the other half... well... they're not as great.but nosong on this cd is really BAD, so you can see how much i really liked thegood songs if i gave 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent and smart rock and roll
Quirky lyrics made powerful by Kinney's strong, smooth voice have made Cake Like into the ultimate women band. All three of these women are awesome musicians and together they explode on stage. I saw them last nightat their home town venue of Brownies where the entire audience wasoverwhelmed by their energy and musical abilities. ... Read more

    3-0 out of 5 stars I'm A Bit Disappointed...But It's Still L7....
Well this album definitly wasn't as wonderful and fabulous as i expected it to be, being a huge L7 fan...there are just a lot of blah moments on this CD you could say. But it is not totally hopeless- for instance, "Lackey" is a great song (who wouldn't want their own manservant?) and "Crackpot Baby" has a great driving riff...but there is just not enough traditional L7 attitude in here to make me listen to the CD without skipping any songs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You're staring at something, you finally get to SEE
Since I never got the chance to see Babes in Toyland live, this set was worth it just for the DVD.It includes early performances as well as later ones. It's neat to see how the band evolved and really grew up.The formatting is strange though and it only plays in my computer, but I love Babes so much that it doesn't bother me.Highly Recommended, you won't be disappointed!
5-0 out of 5 stars oh my
this is the first babes in toyland cd i got.i listened to this and the first song i heard was dust cake boy, screams at me til' i'm deaf.great cd,katastrophy wife is a good improvement for kat but i miss lori. :(

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
Babes In Toyland are one of my favorite bands from the early '90s grunge scene, and I'm glad they finally decided to put this compilation out. It's well worth it for the DVD which includes concerts, pictures, interviews, and their music videos (which I have never seen before, since I was too little back then). The cd spans Kat Bjelland's entire career, taking snippets from Spanking Machine, To Mother, Fontanelle, Painkillers, and Nemesisters. The second half of the CD includes an old 1985 lyrical version of 'Quiet Room' from one of Kat's bands with Courtney Love. There is also a song from another one of her old bands, The Italian Wh*re Nuns (note: the sound quality is horrible). After that, it goes onto songs from Kat's new band, Katastrophy Wife. I must say, I was a bit disappointed with Katastrophy Wife. It sounds somewhat generic, and Kat has lost some of her originality that made Babes In Toyland unique. This is not to say the songs are bad, not at all. They have grown on me. It's just that her lyrics seem a bit corny at times (i.e. Money Shot) which is rare for Kat, because her lyrics were always superb. Other than that, I am glad that she refuses to sell out (unlike some people.. *cough* Courtney *cough*). Kat Bjelland has done more for women in rock than most people realize. This compilation is a must-have for die-hard fans or casual fans like me. ... Read more
