5-0 out of 5 stars Down At The Rock-N-Roll Club...
Of all the punk comps floating around out there (there are zillions - buyer beware), this is one of the absolute best, documenting one of the more vital up-from-the-underground DIY scenes with crystalline precision.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!
Okay, if you're a fan of punk and new wave, you've probably got at least 6or 7 of the 19 songs here scattered around your collection already, onBlondie, Ramones, and Television records. But if you're like me and havenever heard the Dictators, the Heartbreakers, and several of the otherless-famous bands here, you're in for a treat. And Patti Smith, who neverappealed to me much, comes across well in the context of like-minded bands.5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant
The score card: 13 songs, 10 groups, 5 chords, 0 notes on key.But it's hard to imagine anything more visceral, fun, and rebellious. The thing you get most here is the humour: "Born to Lose" and "Sheena is aPunk Rocker" are good examples. Some say the English dropped the bombthat shook up rock and roll, but I believe the Ramones and Television(being one of the prime movers of U2) are every bit as important.Afterall, it was the American record scene that was most bloated, and hence mostneeded the kick.Sure, there are omissions (Talking Heads?) but theremaining give a pretty fair assessment of New York Punk."BlankGeneration" indeed! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Well Done Deathrock Sampler
Overall this comp. put out by Fiend Force records in Germany isn't too shabby. Due to the fact that their are some real class acts that have been rockin' and roll'in for years. Learning their lessons, paying their dues, and striving for a sound of their own. Such as Nekromantix and Mad Sin (which last time I checked are both Psychobilly and not "horror-punk"). The bad side of this disc stems from the inclusion of new-school pop-punk deathrock wanna'be stars such as Blitzkid. Their sound is just not well suited to stand by the likes of say Bobby Steele's Undead or the aformentioned kings of psychobilly. Overall not too bad a disc tho. ... Read more

If there was a single compliation of "Grunge" this would be it. Between Bikini Kill, Infamous Menagere and Nirvana, you really get a sense of what was going on during the early 1990s. I don't think it is over thetop to say that this is a slice of music revolution. 5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly The Best Ever.....
Cool? Very. Rock? You got it. This is possibly the best compilation ever. Bikini Kill is always a must along with Witchypoo and Bratmobile, but when you add the element of Heavens To Bety's "My Red Self", it's thesalt of the recipe which is a much needed dose to eat it up. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as Rhino's "Punk Rock Xmas" collection...
Which shares the El Vez and Humpers tracks. This one's good for a laugh, though. Several laughs, now that I think about it, and some bands I like (Devil Dogs, Rocket From The Crypt, New Bomb Turks, Muffs)put in strong efforts. Nothing here tops what the Stiff Little Fingers did to "White Christmas" on the Rhino set, but it's still got plenty to offer.4-0 out of 5 stars What a find!
The wife and I just opened our Christmas presents with our kids and sat down to have a listen.I haven't laughed so hard since a cajun lady I know showed me her tatoo.Egg nog was pouring from our nasal passages. We tried to dance to some of it but wound up twitching to the spasmotic beat like someone with a nervous condition. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very original
This cd is a very good idea as are all the other seires, punk goes metal, pop, 80's etc, and I am a big fan of acoustic songs I think they are very meaningful and in punk cases they show the parts that are missed out in the real versions due to the overdrive and stuff.
3-0 out of 5 stars What about Coalece?
Wow, didn't expect to see Coalesce on this cd. I love Coalesce for their strange time signatures and dirty vocals. How cool is it to hear them do an acoustic song, complete with harmony, and some dirtiness at the end. They even held a 4/4 time sig. for a whole song. Blue Collar Lullaby knocked my sox off, but that may be because i am a huge Coalesce fan. The rest of the cd is ok, thats it.

3-0 out of 5 stars I love Amazon, it's always high comedy
You know, one of my favorite things to do on this website is to browse through the "hot" bands out now and see people arguing about them, it is pretty high on the comedy scale. This CD is a perfect example of that, it's nice to hear everyone deciding what is and isn't "punk". Can I ask you an honest question, does it matter? If this was called Polka Goes Acoustic but had the same bands, would you complain that Yellowcard isn't polka? REAL polka is Frankie Yankovic, EVERYONE knows that. What does it matter what type of music it is if you like it? If you don't like the music, that's fine, but to not like something because of a label, I'll just say a simple "grow up".

5-0 out of 5 stars Pebbles has done it again a ACID drenched freak OUT!!!!!
They sure have topped themselves if thats possible. One word of advice though don't trip while listening to this GOD knows what corner of your mind you won't be able to get out of. Awesome bands trying to emulate the Doors, the hippie Beatles and Syd Barret to hilarious effect. Higher Elevation is some DJ spouting some stuff thats psychedelic poetry over art noise in " The Diamond Mine", then you got some band called Crystal Chandlier whose lead singer sounds almost exactly like Jim Morrison in the song "Suicidal Flowers", and then you got Psych garage punk insanity complete with gritty vocals in the band "Driving Stupid" and their two awesome songs.Buy this now don't even hesitate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Dementia
Prepare yourself for a brain frazzeling trip through obscure American psych! Other volumes in the Pebbles series are spoiled by beat and frat rock rip-offs, but this one is top notch acid fuelled insanity all the way. The Callico Wall`s nightmarish "Flight Reaction" and The Monocles "Spider and the Fly"- a three minute horror film on record - are among the many highlights. Also included are a couple of great psych novelties such as The Jefferson Handkerchief`s "I`m Allergic to Flowers" which tells the story of a hay fever sufferer`s unfortunate attempts to woo a flower child, not to mention the disturbed genius of Adjeeef the Poet and Oshun.3-0 out of 5 stars Great Series,Weaker Volume
By all means pick up as many of the Pebbles Volumes as you can if you crave wild 60's garage rock. However #3 (here with some bonus tracks not on my vinyl version)is not one of the better ones that I own. It's less rock and roll, and more psychedelic arty noise. It does have a few real gems especially The Jefferson Hankerchiefs' "I'm Allergic To Flowers" and William Penn IV's "Swami". ... Read more

Editorial Review

Cleveland's role in the history of punk (and by extension, alternative rock) was well-documented in Clinton Heylin's book, From the Velvets to the Voidoids: A Pre-Punk History for A Post-Punk World. The city's most famous exports, of course, were Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys. Less well known but equally inspirational was a circle of friends from Columbus who played in a variety of very different but equally weird bands, including Mirrors, the Electric Eels, and the Styrenes. This compilation rounds up 29 tracks recorded by these groups from 1972 to 1976, most of which display a fascination with Velvet Underground-styled rock & roll and industrial noise making. Echoes can be heard in everyone from Jon Spencer to Sonic Youth; just check out "Annie" by Mirrors. And the liner notes are as good as the music. --Read more

this music is good as a fast paced background when painting- no other time, tho...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
This is easily one of the best punk comps I've ever bought. The songs on here excepting one or two are solid gold.Well worth four dollars, to say the least.. it's one of those CD's it is hard to get tired of...

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than any Punk-O-Rama or Fat Music
This is the best punk comp I've bought. Like any comp, there's a bunch of ..., but on this one there's just as much good stuff as there is not good stuff. There's about two songs from each band and in most cases, if one song is good, both of them are. The good ones are by Mustard Plug, Selby Tigers, Falling Sickness, Digger, The Queers, The Weakerthans, and, of course, Samiam. There's a few other good ones, but those are my favorites right now. If nothing else, buy this comp for the fact that Samiam and the Weakerthans are on here and that it's only four bucks. -Randy ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad
it's worth buying just to hear boys singing "my boyfriend's back and you're gonna be in trouble..."there's a lack of girls on this album, which kinda pisses me off because a couple of the songs on here were originally done by chicks.oh well, there's a lack of girls in rock so i'm used to it.anyway, get this album.some standouts include Mr. Sandman, MXPX's cover of Blue Moon, Be My Baby, and Book of Love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Punk Album
A summer night, late, driving around, blasting music. Such was thesituation in which I first heard this album. I guess I am easily amused, but I found this a really refreshing, fun album. Having heard all thesesongs thousands and thousands of times, I discovered that these songs couldhave new life breathed into them after all. This is no Bach or Beethoven, but altogether it's a good CD. It's more lively than the original versionsof these songs and it's not as "out there" as most punk as tooffend people. Although this might not be a perfect way to attempt tobridge the generation gap, it's still a great album. I recommend it highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm a big fan of punk remakes, but....
My roommate ordered this cd and I stole it from him to listen to it because I like remakes, but I was dissappointed. This cd lacks mojo. The songs seemed to be just thrown together for this cd....they lack characterand most of the bands just slug through power chord rendetions of theoriginal tunes.Saving songs: Bracket- My Boyfriends back, Good Riddance-Leader of the Pack, and the Grieving Eucalyptus song Bee-Bop-a- Lula has areally nice opening riff.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best compilations of early US hardcore
This compilation is excellent, and it also holds an important place in history because it was released back when these bands were not well known. This is not an after-the-fact retrospective, it's the real thing. It has great songs from bands that became classics, such as Youth Brigade and Bad Religion, as well as some bands that most people will probably only hear right here. Also, as far as I know this compilation is the only place that you can get some of Youth Brigade's best songs, such as "Look In the Mirror" and "Boys In the Brigade." If you like early 80's US hardcore, get this. If you think you like it but you don't know yet, get this first. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Straight Outta Burbank' 2-CD various artists (Bomp)
Two discs, with a total of forty-five bands.Due to space limitations,I'll just list the bands and not the tunes of the tracks that I enjoyed the most.Disc one introduces bands on the Bomp and Voxx labels.I dug the tunes by The Zeros,Dead Boys,Brian Jonestown Massacre,Psychotic Youth,Iggy&The Stooges,The Germs,The Heartbreakers(no,not Tom Petty's band),DMZ(doing a 13th Floor Elevator cover)and the Martians.Disc two features bands from the Total Energy and Alive labels. It's equally as good and includes some killer cuts by Swell Maps,Street Walkin' Cheetahs,U.S.Bombs,Pink Fairies,Deviants,MC5,John Sinclair and Sun Ra And His Solar Myth Arkestra.Comes with a 16-page booklet that lists the line-up and details of each song.Fantastic cover!

3-0 out of 5 stars it's ok
The only thing that really shines on this album is Strung Outs cover of every breath you take.Anyone who says this song blows is a complete moron. For the rest of the songs, ehh...., a lot of bands could have picked better songs to cover.Overall buy it used or discounted.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh.
As if one 80's nostalga comp wasn't enough, Vagrant brings round 2 of your favorite punkers remembering the past. This star-studded comp contains big names such as NOFX, MxPx, The Get Up Kids, and Lagwagon. Maybe it's cause I'm a bit too young, but I don't recall ever hearing half these songs. There's only about half the songs that jog my memory on this CD, which are: the Suicide Machines' decent cover of "What I Like About You", the Hippos' quirky, MOOGish-sounding "Our Lips Are Sealed" by the Go Go's, the Bouncing Souls note for note rendition of "Don't You Forget About Me" (seriously, it sounds almost identical to the original; hearing it made me want to go watch "The Breakfast Club" again), the Gotohell's simple punk cover of "Just What I Needed" (I think this song is a staple for any halfway decent punk band to cover at some point in their career), Strung Out's completely horrible version of "Every Breath You Take," and ending the CD there is ALL's weak cover of "Rebel Yell" by the first punker I ever saw on TV, Mr. Billy Idol. I don't know if I should've paid full-price for this, but it is fairly enjoyable, if not for the music then for the hilarious 80's yearbook photos inside.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good

I love Hopeless Records. Some of my favorite bands like Mustard Plug, Avenged Sevenfold, and The Weakerthans are featured on this label and appear multiple time on this album. The Hopelessly Devoted To You compilations are some of the best out there, especially since in my opinion the Punk-O-Rama series has gotten too dull.
5-0 out of 5 stars worth your money
this cd has an incredible mix of songs, and for 4 bucks i dont see any reason to complain even if you think it sucks.the stuff from avenged sevenfold (A7X) rocks, and its worth the money just in these two songs.against all authority has two good songs in there, along with scared of chaka and selby tigers.thrice surprisingly had some pretty hardcore songs on this.i admit the weakheartens suck, along with mustard plug and some other songs, but if you look past that this is a awesome cd, especially for 4 bucks.buy it if you want a great cd

3-0 out of 5 stars Very mixed feelings about this
This compilation contains a very strange mix of music. The only real reason I bought it was to get an unreleased Samiam song, and it was probably worth it for that. That track is very good. Also, I was happy to be introduced to Avenged Sevenfold, I may pick up some of their stuff... was very impressed with their songs. I also liked the Selby Tigers track, thought that was very good... not sure if I'd pick up their stuff but maybe. The track by Jeff Ott is OK and was cool to have in there, Scared of Chaka was OK as well.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Land of Opportunity
This CD features a lot of incredibly strange music. Most of these tracks are really bizarre, but interesting. The majority of them are taken directly from rare old records, so some of them are a bit scratchy. If you like strange old records, you need to get this CD.
