4-0 out of 5 stars Above average tribute record...Drag the River steals show
Most tributes to great bands are actually pretty horrible, for all the obvious reasons. This one is not.The covers are faithful without being carbon copies.Great songs performed by a bunch of energetic, fresh bands.Highlights are the covers by the Ergs (I'm in Trouble), Druglords of the Avenues (Favorite Thing), Tiltwheel (Skyway) and the Draft (Little Mascara). The Queers monotone cover of "Unsatisfied" is horrible, but you should have seen that coming a mile away.Right, chip?

5-0 out of 5 stars Emo/Punk Meets the 80's - Brilliant Match
I lived in the 80's.I love the 80's.I grew up listening to bands like New Order, Tears for Fears, OMD, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Siouxie and the Banshees, the Church, etc.You should know the drill. In my adulthood, I found emo/screamo (which equals punk according to groups listed on this cd) because these harken back to those days.Oh, it's different alright but the spirit is in the right place. So this compilation was exactly what I would have dreamt up.If you are an 80's lover looking for a primer of what bands you might enjoy, this CD is a great introduction.Bands such as Relient K, Sugarcult, Emergy, Halifax, Motion City Soundtrack will give you a great peak at current music. They don't always break new ground with new arrangements.I think the most inspired retread was Straight Up by Halifax. You will never hear that song the same way again.I was amazed how a frivolous dance song suddenly had musical depth.Emery brings the best vocals of any track with their version of Holding Out for a Hero.Sugarcult holds their own quite nicely with I Melt with You.You will want to run out get these bands cds.Because I checked them all out shortly after these covers. They really are as good as their covers on this CD.Give it a try.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get Over The Title
First off, in this day & age...anything titled "punk" is not the 70's rebellion most want it to be. Nowadays, punk is anything with a distortion in the amp. But you know what? Get over it...times change. It's all about the music, not the label.
3-0 out of 5 stars Punk?
Johnny Rotten it ain't.When did punk go pop? These versions are well done, and I'll be the first to admit that I'm not familiar with many of the groups covering the songs (sorry, I'm an old guy), but this is not punk anything. It's pure pop.In fact I find it pretty hard to believe that any of these groups have a handle on the spirit of what PUNK was all about in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best comps
Not So Quiet on the Western Front is one of the best comps because it offers most of the best hardcore/punk from California and Nevada at the time. I definitly recommend this to anyone who is new to hardcore,Check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Alternative Tentacles/Maximum Rock & Roll compilation.
Ah, i didn't even know this had been reissued but i'm glad that it has.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive NorCal Punk Compilation
This is it; this is the music that liberated thousands of my fellow Northern Californians. There's some truly kick-ass $hit on here. And while the styles range tremendously, every song on this album is good. And then some are GREAT, like "Pay Salvation" by Los Olvidados or "Breakout" by UXB. If you like Maximum Rock and Roll, you will love this album! This is a monument to nonconformity and I highly recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mullet Time
BTW, Nerf Herder's great goof, "Santa's Got A Mullet," is included here as a hidden track. Originally released on "High Voltage Christmas Rock" - according to the band, a "low budget, half-assed Christmas EP recorded (while drunk) to give out to our friends." In 2001, Nerf Herder had 1000 copies of the "Christmas Rock" CD pressed up professional-style for general consumption.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good music? Perhaps. Punk? No, not really.
When I think "punk", I think Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Ramones, Crass, Operation Ivy, Subhumans, that sort of thing. Even casting this 'punk' net widely, most of the songs on this CD do not belong even to the periphery of the category. The rap song that starts the CD is more punk than some of other songs on there. This is not to say that the music is bad, exactly, but if you're looking for punk in the sense I've characterized above, you will be sorely disappointed. Buyer beware.

4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoy christmas
I love christmas music so i was excited when i picked this up.Even though i wouldnt exactly call this a "punk rock" christmas cd, theres lots of good emo/pop/punk bands on it.I do enjoy the 12 days of christmas song. This cd is filled with emo/pop/punk bands playing there own christmas songs and some holiday favorites.I enjoy listening to this but i like my christmas cd's i make better but i would get this if u like christmas music done by emo type bands and some pop/punk bands. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been Better
Fearless Records has been putting these compatibles out for years, having today's up-and-coming artists cover songs that have been populer. But in this release the songs are better left with the original artists. While it features Gin Blossoms' "Hey Jealousy" done by Hit the Lights, Copeland's version of "Black Hole Sun" and "Gym Class Heroes" doing a version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' ballad "Under the Bridge" they all are typical and lacking excitement.
3-0 out of 5 stars :(
I figured this album would be awesome...but the song choices aren't too great. Most of the songs are pretty good and everything but some of the ones they chose aren't even big hits of the 90s. This cd was somewhat of a disappointment to me. I only enjoyed about 1/2 of the cd. Hopefully the next punk goes...isnt horrible. I was actually looking forward to this cd to coming out to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Punk
The name of the CD is misleading, the artists performing the covers are not really punk bands. I still enjoy the cd, its different, I've been pretty impressed by all the covers. Hearing each artists way of remaking the songs is pretty cool, and hearing some new twists to some old favorites. So as long as your not looking for a "punk" cd this is actually pretty good. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars first off...
If youre a fan of Bush why would you be looking at a cd titled 'rock AGAINST Bush' in the first place? We're not here to hear about how much respect you have for a man whos driving our country into the ground. We want to know about the music, not your delusional loyalty for someone who obviously has no respect for you or this country. If you are here to go on and on about how much you hate this cd because and only because you, for some strange reason, love Bush... get a life. Do you honestly have nothing better to do then go arround on a site bashing anything and everything that goes against your beloved president? Now... onto the music. some of the bands are good. however it does not show in this album. it is a waste of a perfectally good cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars go fat Mike
this is a great cd good bands and good musicit used to be rock against Regan when I was in high school finally someone speaks out about Bush's horrible term in office

5-0 out of 5 stars "By the Blood" is the most ridiculous reviewer on Amazon.com
I was practically horrified by the complete B.S. being generated by the below review. There are infinite ways in which this "By the Blood" reviewer has gone awry, and I literally quaked in my seat as I read his idiotic rantings. For one thing, he has the nerve to call himself intelligent. Not only is this boastful, it's not true. Anyone who still supports Bush at this point obviously can't be too high on the I.Q. charts. Then of course he says that this compilation is terrible, which any appreciator of rock can quickly prove false if they've listened to Rock Against Bush. By The Blood cannot call himself a music reviewer if he doesn't even classify The Offspring on this CD as punk, for goodness sake. They certainly are punk, and top of the line punk at that. I'm pretty much thinking after having read the majority of the reviews for this item that people are only dissing the music because of their political views. People, it's the melodies that count. You're rating the music, not whether or not the bands share your convictions.

Editorial Review

Punk rock has long been known for its short, loud, and snotty anthems, but this is taking things to extremes. None of the songs found here reaches the one-minute mark. Some are among punk's most esteemed anthems, while others are casual additions to the canon. In either case, even if you don't like one tune, well, there's another one coming in just a few seconds. This isn't the best introduction to these bands. The Descendents, for example, are punk-pop titans who and not at their best when aping the hardcore set. However, where else can you find Less Than Jake, Nerf Herder, Blink 182, Green Day, the Mr. T. Experience, Gwar, the Circle Jerks,D.O.A., Agnostic Front, and the Muffs all on one CD? There's no shortage of top-shelf names here, and more than a few surprises will keep you hopping. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Infectious!
The first listen you will be unimpressed. The second you will be intrigued. The third, you won't be able to get these 30 second songs out of your head! This CD is fun, in a decade when music takes itself way to seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars hot shelf
Okay guys, this cd is awesome, I heard that there was a super rare vinyl pressing of this, but I mean, is that for real?Anyways, yeah you should buy this cd, it's kinda wierd saying this, but it sounds... dated.Yeah I know it's only seven years since this came back and most of this bands are still around (and putting out some lame albums) but even the bad bands seem to put some good songs on this joint! No joke.I can listen to the whole thing through and through cause it has shoit songs... I don't see why you wouldn't get it, I mean it's a classic comp, I wish there'd be more like it, you know like an updated thingee.Oh yeah the Ataris song is suprising to my liking, it's all about those lame bands that the radio STILL plays even though it's been like (oh eight or so) many years since that song was written.Blah blah blah... anyways, I think fat wreck should put out short music volume 2, I mean what is wrong with that, it must have been hell getting this together though, I don't doubt em for not doing it again...

4-0 out of 5 stars good but it leaves you wanting more...
The cd has alot of good songs, but they are not enough to get a true sense of each bands particular style. So even if you like a band's thirty seccond teaser, you may not like that band's other music. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars To Ally
The reason why the singer on Element 101's cover of "I'm Like A Bird" sounds like a girl is because it is a girl. They had/have (not sure if they're still recording) a female lead singer through most of their career. This CD is decent at best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best but still good
I bought this cd since I l-o-v-e-d Punk Goes 80's. While there are some good songs on here (Bye,Bye,Bye ; The Way You Love Me; I Want It That Way), there are some that are just plain laughable. For example, the cover of ...Baby One More Time is just.. horrendous. And, Student Rick's Heaven Is A Place On Earth is just funny (the lead singer cannot hit those high notes). Also, the cover of I'm Like A Bird is... confusing. The lead singer sounds kinda like a girl. By NO means are ANY of the bands on this cd "punk". Seriously. Rufio is screamo/emo and so is the Starting Line, and both of those are the closest things to punk on the cd.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great cd!
I got a burned copy from my brother a few years ago and thought it was just a cd he had put together, then I found out it was a real cd! I think it's really funny because the people singing put their own twist on the songs. It's pretty funny to listen to. I enjoy it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't care what yall say but listen to what I got to say!
Punk O Ramo Vol. 1 is the best period you don't even have to hear all of the other ones. You can tell this one is just the most original because it's the first...duh! Some as they call themselves "punk" bands of day suck. They just suck like New Found Glory and Story of The Year, NFG has basically nothing but saying things that have no point, and Story of The Year are basically just covering songs off of Good Charlotte's The Young and The Hopeless. Trust me on that one. Get it and you'll see EXACTLY what I mean. But anywayz, Punk O Rama Vol. 1 is the best of all. You HAVE to have it in your punk collection!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent alternative rock compilation
Amazing songs from some of the best groups in recent history. This CD is an awesome mix of the blues-influenced alternative and punk music that Detroit is known to produce. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys a little bit of blues a little bit of edginess, great lyrics and great songwriting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
if you are like me and are an avid fan of the White Stripes, you are probably waiting for their next album, with De Stijl and Elephant in the CD player to tide you over. The White Stripes weren't always Grammy Nominees, they were once a new band on the Detroit music scene. Fortunately, jack White really stayed true to his roots and was able to give us the awesome album. It will really give an inside look at new bands, that have that same raw, real, simple sound that the White Stripes are known for. For the White Stripes fan this is a must buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album - No defect
The album simply is a great buy for anyone even slightly into the detroit music scene.Just to clear up one issue though there is no problem with the product, anyone with the 'Candy Coloured Blues' unauthorised white stripes documentry will know that the cut short tracks are an interesting experiment in which Jack White asked band members to simply play something bluesey, in an effort to reveal somthing about the detroit bands he was showcasing. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Fun CD to listen to
I can't speak with authority as to the styles of music on this compilation because I don't listen to a lot of it. The only band on this CD I'm familiar with is Dropkick Murphys, but I bought it to try something different and for the most part enjoyed it. Not every song is a keeper, but most are good to listen to. I liked the Murphys song as well as the ones by Hepcat, The Business, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Swingin' Utters. There is a nice mix of punk and ska and I'm sure other styles I don't know the terminology for. It's a strong compilation and a good way to try out new bands and new musical styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Punks Learn How To Loves Ska On This CD!
As we all know that Hellcat records is owned and runned by Lars from Rancid. Well being a punk, I know that right now, all that is considered 'punk' is either A)This main-stream crap which sucks badly or B)All these emo and hardcore/metal bands appearing in the underground right now. So being a dude waiting for some new punk band to change everything in the punk genre...they havent made it. 4-0 out of 5 stars Punks should steer clear, but SKA FANS LISTEN UP!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a classic hard-core album
This is a really decent punk rock compilation.Pretty much every song is good, top to bottom. It is cool to see some Northwest bands and some hard-to-find old school outfits from 80s such as DFL (my favorite band) and Poison Idea. This is a good mixture of music and a must buy for punk rock aficionados. Not many better compilations out there!

4-0 out of 5 stars wholsome punk rock goodness
I bought this one about 10 min after i had bought Vol. 6 sence i was driving from one record store to another. This one is pretty good, but saddly its kind of a tease today, seeing as many of the tracks are from albums that went out of print years ago. This one is probably one of the best out of the 10 Punk-O-Rama compilations so far. The only two that i would rate better would be vol. 1, and the somewhat rare and un heard of Vol. 2.1, which was a special deal at the 97 warped tour(looks the same only the moster on the cover is skateboarding, not urinating on a wall, and it has the Wapred Tour logos) 2.1 featured a slightly modified track list with stronger tracks from SNFU, Down By Law and Pennywise. Its worth the money youll spend if you ever see a copy in the used cd bin. Anyway, Punk-O-Rama 2 is a pretty good collection of punk from the 90s as well as the two 80s hardcore bands Poison Idea and DFL. If you want to sample a pretty broad spectum that is punk music, this is a good place to start, as it gives you not only some of today's vetran bands' older material, but some seriously old scool stuff too. also some of these tracks arent for those turned off by questionable subject matter...Namely the one TSOL track

5-0 out of 5 stars ahhhhhhhh this reminds me of times past.....
It was 1996, I was young and pissed off, had problems with school, parents and girlfriends. This CD came right on time. The Offspring's Smash brought the Epitaph name to my attention, so I saw this for 10 Guilders (Yes, guilders...damn the euro)and picked it up. I was not dissapointed. It was angry, loud and fast. Descendents, NOFX, Pennywise, Bad Religion.. Loved it.

3-0 out of 5 stars decent cd 4 punk fans
i think punk rock is awesome. this cd has a few good punk songs but u could listen 2 a lot of it buy it u wont regret it but it is not as good as the first 5

5-0 out of 5 stars this cd got me into punk
when i looked at this cd on the cd rack, it was only 5 bucks so i bought just for the hell of it. so one day i put in that cd and i was blown away. songs like blackeye, can i borrow some ambition, bath of last resistance, true believers, coming down with me are all great. I LOVE THIS CD. ITS WORTH IT TO BUY IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Punk-O-Rama.....Enough Said
This was the first Punk-O-Rama CD I listened to, and boy I was not dissapointed. Most of the songs on this CD are the type of punk I would listen to, Quite fast and energetic. The best song on the CD has to be either NOFX - Bath of Least Resistance (NOFX being the greatest punk band of all time, of course), or Beatsteaks - Let me in. I heard the Beatsteaks for the first time on this CD and there absolutely bloody excellent. Obviously, The Cd is made complete with songs from the Descendents, Pulley, Pennywise, Dropkick Murphy's. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best punk compilation I have ever heard
I know most reviews say that this is not the best Punk O Rama volume. But I'll have to disagree. It's the best.3-0 out of 5 stars Weak effort Punk-O-Rama
This album was good and all but it just seems like they grabbed a handful of songs and threw them on a CD.The songs featured are not the best by the bands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Brazilian Post-Punk from the 80's
The vibrant and energetic Brazilian Post-Punk movement from the 80's went by without anyone, outside of Brazil, taking notice. Finally, Soul Jazz (thank you!) decided to put out this awesome compilation. Now the world can listen to how Brazilians reacted to American and European Punk music. "The Sexual Life of the Savages" covers a lot of ground from the guitar-heavy music of As Mercenarias and Smack to the moody and sophisticated ambiance of Chance (one of my favorite bands to this day), from the experimental and rich rhythms of Patife and Akira S to the tropical goth of Cabine C and NAU, and from the low-tech samba of Fellini (the best Brazilian band EVER) to the spooky 80's tecno-pop of Harry. This is experimental Post-Punk music like you never imagined.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great comp from Soul Jazz!
I bought this about a month ago, never expecting to be too impressed by it. I just wanted to have a taste of something that seemed like a bizarre concept to me, initially. I mean Brazilian post-punk?! C'mon! I love Brazilian music (60s/70s) and bands like Os Mutantes were as good as most psychedelic bands in the US and Europe in the 60s, but i couldn't imagine a post-punk movement doing something significant in a country like Brazil.
5-0 out of 5 stars So Paulo Scene You Never Knew Existed... Brasil
Wow ! Track 3@4 are ok and take some getting use to, but all 18 tracks are wow ! Punk there is, but it seems to me it is 80's all the way. A must and get ready. Check out the liners.

5-0 out of 5 stars uh huh...them
This is a great compilation that introduced me to alot of "new" bands.I bought this being a fan of bands like Hole, the Lunachicks, the Muffs, Buck, etc...BTW, the song "Retard Girl" by Hole...Courtney Love wrote it about herself, she's the retard girl! Yes, she grew up poor white trash..and was taunted and made fun of.Go figure.Any fan of indie rock of the female persuasion should love this! Great stuff by April March, Third Grade Teacher, etc and "Dishy" is a great song.*rock on with yr frock on*

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD and enjoy!
I listen to these CDs when I do housework. hahaha Nothing better than a bunch of chicks with an attitude. Love it, Love it! Buy this double CD....enjoy!My husband bought it for me. Many thanks, darling!

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE!
50% of this CD is pure bliss. The remaining 50% is merely excellent marred by a few spots that are great or just very good.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Punk at a broader view
Some of the reviews of this comp seem to be narrow minded. If you've ever listened to the other punk o ramas you'd see that this cd follows the trend though Epitaph seems to be broadening its selection slightly. This cd has most of the regulars and adds a few newbies to punkorama like Atmosphere, Eyedea, and Error.Hiphop artists like Sage Francis and Atmosphere have been traversing into the punk scene lately and it makes a lot of sense to include them in the punkoramas. All in all, this cd was pieced together very well and has a ton of good songs.Well worth it for about $5.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you actually want to listen to punk...
...don't buy this CD.Most of this is emo, and quite a bit of it is meandering and not particularly catchy. There are a few good bands on this CD--enough to merit maybe listening to it once or twice, but it's not worth your time if you're an actual punk fan.It has an interesting mix of music, but it doesn't fit together too well. The upsides to this compilation are as follows:one, the Dropkick Murphys song, and two, it's inexpensive. However, it's even less expensive to just forget about buying this CD at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and different, but what is rap doing on here.
I see a lot of reviewers have said that this was the 1st punk

4-0 out of 5 stars Great punk compilation
This is one of the better punk comps i've heard, and has a lot more varied stuff on it than an "oi" comp would. There are some classic songs on here from Wasted Youth, TSOL, Agent Orange, and Flipper.Pretty much all of it is good but those are the best.I'd recommend getting Agent Orange's "Living in Darkness" or TSOL's "Dance With Me" if the songs on here appeal to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Germs rule!
This is one of the better compilations that I own.It is great, but itcould have had a better germs cut.Darby Crash rules!

4-0 out of 5 stars Despite the cheesy title and cliche' cover, it's a keeper
Sure, any compilation like this reeks of cash-in, and in the realm of "punk rock" that's a sin, but suspend your prejudices for a time and realize that the songs here are vital.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good thing it costs less than six bucks....
And it't not even worth that. The Puke-O-Rama is terrible.Out of the 28 songs there are maybe three good ones. There are some ok bands on here, but they sure picked some crappy songs from those bands. This CD is filled with poser punks and a bunch of pop punk.Spend your money elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Best Punk Compilation Ever? I Beg To Differ!):<
Let's get one thing strait: I am deffidently not a punk hater, and DEFFIDENTLY not an mtv loser fan. In fact, punk rock is my favorite type of music. But I did not like punk o rama volume 5. I just did not find it cool, catchy, or even ok. It sucked. The only songs I really liked were the Pennywise song and the Vision song(which is about being close minded, and I don't like people who are close minded), and the Pulley song was okay, though the singer's voice annoys the heck outta me. The rest is bland, unoriginal, and annoying. Even the Rancid song was annoing. Yes, you heard me right. Everyone's so-called favorite punk band's song was annoying. At Borders, I had the choice between this and AFI's All Hollows E.P. I now know better than that. If you liked this CD, fine. Just remember to buy good punk CDs from bands like The Distillers, Misfits, The Ramones, Offspring, Rise Against, and early AFI, out of respect for good punk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Damn good punk, fewer pennies
There is something about good punk and this album has it. Crank it up to annoy the hip hop posers in mama's 'burban next to you at a red light. Anti social behaviors induced by playing this album are an intended side effect. ... Read more

i love the second song its great i love it

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best Atticus Comp
I have to say, I enjoy all 3 Atticus CD's greatly, despite the fact that many people claim that they demean in quality as they grow higher in number.I do think though, that this one is probably the best all around.
