Patti Smith cowrote her first big hit, "Because the Night," with Bruce Springsteen, and that track was the force behind this album's ascent of the U.S. Top 40. Never fully departing from her punk-poetess roots, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Chick can Rock
It seems as though today, there is a new segregation enforced by the music industry: girls are expected to do "pop" while rock is for guys. Listen to any contemporary hard rock station and you are unlikely to hear a female voice. This was not always the case as evidenced by Patti Smith on this fine album. She is a rocker to the core.I am among those who believe Easter is a better album than Horses. While Horses was groundbreaking, Patti's vocal delivery on it was very mannered, which distracts from some of the songs. On Easter, she just belts them out. I believe Easter has stood the test of time better than Horses, and is her best album. The album is loaded with great songs. Her version of "Because the Night" is definitive. It is passionate, sexy, and completely outclasses the bland, wonderbread remake by Natalie Merchant. All the other tracks from the original album are just as good. The only song I was not entirely impressed with was the bonus track, "Godspeed", but that's a small point. Get Easter if you want one of the great, underrated albums of the 70's.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oh The Comparisons, The Comparisons.......
All people seem to do is compare this album to her debut, "Horses", well that's unfair, both albums are great and deserve some kind of recognition. So....
5-0 out of 5 stars Where it all began
I have always loved Patti Smith. This is one of those albums that just take you a long time to actually get. "Because The Night" is one of my favorite songs of all time, I have it on various CD collections. "Easter" isa great song also. I have most of here other albums, and I think this one and "Horses" are her best. I saw her perform a few years back and was totally blown away by the power of her performance, not to mention the great band she had with her. It's funny that what people like Patti Smith were doing in the 70's, a lot of new acts are trying to copy now. Most making only childish sugar coated versions. She is the queen of the female punk/rock singer-songwriters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Words....
I honestly don't think I can put into words how great this album truly is. Its truly one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. Although, it took me awhile to feel that way. At the Drive In takes awhile to set in, Omars voice is at first a bit disrupting and rough around the edges, but you gradually grow to love it, as you do with everything else about this band. At the Drive In is in your face with funky and crazy riffs that are accompanied with Omar's unique voice. You really can't describe their sound, you just have to experience it for yourself. But let me tell you, they are one of the most creative and unique bands I've ever experienced. They are truly one of the most influential bands of the post/hardcore punk scene. Many bands have been influenced by ATDI that are popular today. And this album delivers what ATDI do best, and thats rock your socks off. And you keep coming back to get your socks rocked off again and again. Its raw, emotional, intense and emotional. I love the unique guitar riffs and sounds the band produces. Its a very complex album, you hear piano's in some songs, and other little atmospheric effects are littered throughout.

At The Drive-In_Relationship Of Command *****
4-0 out of 5 stars At the Drive-In is where it all started
Omar's high woman-ish but extremely awsome voice hasn't quite shown itself that much in this CD. Songs like "Mannequin Republic" and "Non-zero possibility" are probably what got him the idea for Mars Volta. If thats you'r favorite part about At the Drive-In you should definitly look into some Mars Volta. But don't think of them as an "underdeveloped Mars Volta" because they differ in many ways and have more of a EMO style. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a landmark album in the Melvins' twisted discography
this is the Melvins' major label debut. back in the early 90's, the big grunge boom of the northwest was going on, and major record labels were busy signing bands left & right that sounded even remotely similiar to Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden. when Atlantic signed the Melvins, they didn't know what they were getting into. I don't think they were meant to be a big multi-million dollar phenomenon. nevertheless, Houdini was a kick-ass, weird, demented, rock album and is probably the best of their career (next to their self-titled album). in my opinion, this is probably one of the best rock albums that came out that year. when I think of my favorite albums of '93 I think of: Tool - Undertow, Tad - Inhaler, and Melvins - Houdini.

5-0 out of 5 stars "a fantastic release"
i am not new to the melvins by any means, but this is only the third album that i have purchased by them. and i deffinatly have to say that "houdini" is my favorite out of the three that i own.
5-0 out of 5 stars Primo Melvins
Wow. All I can truly say is that this album is something to behold. Melvins purists may knock it slightly due to it being a major label album (their first), but hands down, this is their tightest and most face-eating accomplishment. If Boris, Zodiac and Your Blessened were on this album, it would be the greatest album of all time - and in fact there would be no more need to make music. Ever again.

3-0 out of 5 stars (3.5 stars) Not perfect, but better than you might think
A third album is often a dangerous and important time in a band's career. On one hand, they can start experimenting with and tweaking their sound a little. But, conversely, they have only two albums out so they're still fairly young, and thus probably can't afford a misstep. Atreyu's junior release, "Death Grip On Yesterday," doesn't take them to any new musical territories, but it's nonetheless pretty good and not-at-all disappointing. This Orange County quintet's first disc, "Suicide Notes And Butterfly Kisses," was a fairly aggressive and heavy metalcore record, but 2004's "The Curse" was much more melodic and polished. And now, two years later, "Death Grip On Yesterday" tries to bring the best of both worlds. "The Curse" premiered Atreyu's use of cleanly sung vocals, and it also sold nearly twice as well as their debut, so it's only natural that Atreyu would want to continue using them on future releases. But, unlike "The Curse," there is plenty of metallic riffing here to prevent old-school fans from becoming completely alienated. If you want Atreyu to make an album which recaptures the all out intensity of "Suicide Notes," you'll have to wait a while longer. You might even have to wait forever, because the band has definitely perfected its sound and now seems very comfortable in its musical niche.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Album
Atreyu's latest album "A Deathgrip on Yesterday" might be their biggest step in there career. While The Curse was full of dark lyrics, The latest album's lyrics are a lot more mature. This CD also features cleaner vocals by Alex (whose screaming seemed to improve from earlier albums) and Brandon, and masterful guitar work by Dan and Travis. Cant forget about Marc, who lent his own scream for most of the songs. The album starts off full of energy with the song Creature, probably my favorite song on the CD. Fast and straight to the point with a good chorus. Great opener. "Shameful" is a catchy track that has Brandon on most the track. "The Theft" Atreyu took a different approach, making this their rock ballad of sorts. For what it is, its alright but nothing special. The first single "Ex's and Oh's" is probably the catchiest song on the CD and the first single. The song opens strong with great guitar work by Dan. Alex hardly screamed on this track, taking a more melodic vocal approach. The Brandon's piece is pretty catchy as well and the guitar solo is pretty good also. Dan and Travis trade off parts during the solo. "Your Private War" is another great track on the CD, real aggresive and has an anthematic feel to it once it hits the chorus. The last track "Untitled Finale" a decent finisher to a rather quick album (about 33 minutes long). Its a fun album to listen to on a long car ride or when your hanging out listening to your iPod. All of the tracks are easy to get into, I could have only wished they include maybe one or two more tracks. For what it is though, its a pretty good album.
5-0 out of 5 stars great third album

Editorial Review

Even when this Minneapolis trio dabbled in familiar sounds, such as the strummed folk of "Never Talking to You Again" or the Bo Diddley-style R&B of "Hare Krsna," what came out on this swirling 1984 double album was clenched, emotional, and intense. Over 23 short songs that helped define the still-thriving punk subgenre known as hardcore, leaders Grant Hart and Bob Mould screamed their alienation in the fastest language they could possibly produce. Though Mould is the more personal songwriter, lashing out at liars and (presumably) lovers, both Hüsker heads come up with psycho-depression choruses like "What's going on inside my head?" Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the power and glory of the Huskers
If Iggy Pop helped, as he has claimed, "to wipe out the 60s," Bob Mould, Grant Hart and Greg Norton then helped to bring it back. That is, this band managed to expand upon the musical/emotional/cathartic possibilities in high speed hardcore by drawing upon 60s (and 70s) psychedelic and hard rock influences. For instance, elsewhere, the band cover such iconic 60s performers as Donovan (Sunshine Superman) and the Byrds (Eight Miles High). And like the Who's Quadrophenia LP, this too appears to be also a concept album about a young man's alienation from the world around him.
5-0 out of 5 stars A SONIC MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!
I bought this when it came out in the 80's and was blown away. Why was no one else listening to this? Why wasn't this being played on the radio? Why was everyone else listening to Poison, Motley Crue and the endless parade of hair bands and not Zen Arcade?
5-0 out of 5 stars i really dont give everything a 5 i just only review what i like
Its kind of hard to explain.IN 1984 there was a division.A division between the bands on the radio and the bands touring the country.A division that lead lots of kids to give up on mainstream music and try to be in bands outside the mainstream- damn the consequences.Husker Du along side bands like the minutemen, Black Flag, Flesheaters, DOA, Avengers, Dead Kennedys, and many many more- it became apparent that these overlooked bands we better musicians then the top 40 of the day.Not only could they play there instuments better compare such works as "dancing on the ceiling" (same time period) to "Turn on the news". Which is more relevant now?Someone else mentioned "Our band could be your life" the book-read it now you'll understand. But back then no one sounded like this. Not punk, not heavy metal this was something new.Yes i do admit it, this does sound a bit dated.Still it is required listening to those who would understand the punk/hardcore of the 80's or the 90's the years that "punk broke". ... This is overall an amazing album. I purchased it a while ago after hearing When A Night Feels My Song on the radio. I was blown away by the consistency of the album. Every song is a hit single.
4-0 out of 5 stars Funky Kingston
Kingston, Jamaica? No, mon, that'd be Kingston Ontario. As in Canada. As in wind chill, blizzards, and block heaters. And trust me, when Toots Hibbert sang about a "Funky Kingston" there was nobody getting the two towns mixed up. Yet as unlikely as it may seem - especially given the fact that Bedouin Soundclash played among all the trendy screamo bands on this summer's Warped tour - these Canuck kids do the reggae like they stepped straight outta Trenchtown.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique
This was and is a classic in itself. Steve Albini surpassed himself when this came out. This will allways be a standard for this kind of extreme rock.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is nuts.
this is probably one of the most seriously evil sounding rock albums of all time. this sort of music is great when youre in a mood where you just cant cope with the mindless petty droning of everyone around you. the drum machine slaps you in the face, or more accurately, beats you into submission with a sledge hammer.

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is mine now
I first heard this band when they performed on the Family Values Tour (with KoRn and Stone sour). I was blown away. I went out the next day and bought this CD. I love it. It is a great piece of rock music that gets usual rotation on my Gigabeat (I'm listening to "I Aint Your Savior" right now actually). My top 5 tracks are:
4-0 out of 5 stars exactly as their name says
its high energy, rapid fire, kick you in the face rock.the opening track had me sold. Ok, so its not the deepest intelectual album ever written, but if your looking for good ol fashioned weight-room adrenaline this is it.It does slow about half way through, but finishes out strong.Loosely drawn from the same vein as Offspring's Smash.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Piece of Rock n' Roll!
Don't let the sole bad review of this album on Amazon.com deter you from getting this album. This is, without question, one of the best hard rock albums I've had the privilege to purchase in quite some time, and Bullets and Octane are one of only a handful of great hard rock acts that are putting out material on a major label. While some critics liken this band to Buckcherry, and therefore cite them as unoriginal, the similarities to Buckcherry aren't strong at all.Rather, Bullets and Octane is much more reminiscient of the type of punk infused rockabilly played by Social Distortion.Better yet, it's kind of like Social Distortion on steroids...harder in every way, but with a lot of great melodies. If you are a fan of Social Distortion, you'll probably like this album. If you're a fan of Buckcherry, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, or other hard rock bands, you'll probably like this album. It is truly fantastic!

Editorial Review

In the opening seconds of this solo outing, former Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness peels off the line like a Chevy hotrod. Combining gritty punk attitude, honky-tonk toughness, and rockabilly swagger, Ness spins tales of depravity ("Crime Don't Pay," "Ballad of a Lonely Man") that would be downright depressing if they weren't so foot-tappingly catchy. A world-weary tough guy--equal parts Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, and Johnny Rotten--Ness is a true homegrown talent, combining his trademark growl and wire-taut guitar playing with dramatic, captivating storytelling. Appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Brian Setzer, and members of the Royal Crown Revue add to this record's already formidable mix, but Ness is really the star, proving at every turn that there can be life after punk without coming anywhere close to selling out. 3-0 out of 5 stars its not my thing...
being a social distortion fanatic at one time, i picked this up at a used record store...now i knew it was going to be more country, jazzy, and classic rock-ish, but i was expecting something like "somewhere between heaven and hell" i suppose. i mean i respect mike ness' influences and his music, but this solo effort isnt my cup of tea...don't think twice is awesome though!...i would like to see him use this johnny cash/rockabilly inspired country to make some killer social distortion albums such as their early 90's albums...to me, this sounds very choppy much like the clash's sandinista.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Crap
I've never really heard too much of Social Distortion's music, but stumbled upon this album by way of Hank Williams III's message board so I'm quite partial to the cover of Hank Sr.'s You Win Again. This is quite possibly the perfect album. It seems to be the soundtrack to damn near everyone's life. It holds so many different emotions and moods in just 15 songs. You can't not love this album. It's just not possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must be a clash, there's no alternative!
Why the heck this terrific album isn't mentioned as a Clash masterwork in the same breath as LONDON CALLING is a mystery to me. Coming out when it did at the tail-end of 1980, SANDINISTA! was so unlike anything else on the landscape of Punk and New Wave that I, for one, got drawn in right away. It's an album that dared to break the "Year Zero" mentality that ultimately made Punk and New Wave a cul-de-sac, and grab onto rockabilly, gospel, sound collages ala "Revolution #9," rap and lots and lots and lots of dub, all the while sounding like nobody else but The Clash. And you want classic toons? Try "The Magnificent Seven," "The Call Up," "Police On My Back" (which was penned by Eddy Grant), "Charlie Don't Surf" (probably the best track here) and a load of others.
3-0 out of 5 stars maybe I missed something?
I must have missed something because this CD really wasn't the greatest the clash has to offer. Sandinista Disc 1 just wasn't doing it for me. maybe they were trying really hard to explore different styles but it was kind of out there. nothing was really a good song and i feel kind of bad that this is taking up a spot in my CD wallet. The second song Hitsville UK sounded like it should have been playing on "Peewee Herman's Playhouse" or "Barney". it was like a disney sing a long with some random woman in it. what the hell? However, Sandinista Disc 2 i was much more appreciative of. This disc showed they hadn't totally gone off the deep end. so this is what i think. i'm more into thier self-titled album and give 'em enough rope. even london calling was great. this just didn't settle well at all. don't start here if you are a new fan. go for give em' enough rope or self-titled.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most important album since darkside of the moon
when i first listened to this album i have to admit that like most, i didn't completely get it. I had just recently heard the first three clash albums (my first real forray into classic punk) and immediately fell in love with them. this album however didn't grab me as quickly. well anyway after a few years of obsession with their early work i decided to give it one more try. this time i came prepared with 3-4 years of experience listening to the best in punk, blues, jazz, reggea, rockabilly and classic rock -- and more importantly a greater awareness of the socio-political world.sandinista is one of the deepest and most engrossing concept albums ive ever had the pleasure of encountering, it paints a painfully accurate portrait of the continuing struggle between the upper and lower classes and the blood and tears it creates -mainly for the latter, and of course throughout the album Mr. Strummer reminds us of the healing power that music and music alone has to bring us all together.

It speaks volumes about the mid-'70s music scene that the Clash's explosive debut was viewed as too provincial and raw for U.S. consumption upon its original English release in 1977. No matter--between Joe Strummer's marble-mouthed howls of righteous rage on songs like "Career Opportunities" ("The ones that never knock"), "I'm So Bored with the USA" ("Yankee dollars talk to the dictators of the world"), and "White Riot" ("I wanna riot / A riot of my own"), and the furious instrumental assault led by guitarist Mick Jones, the Clash became a hot import strictly on word of mouth--and helped establish the band as one of leaders of rock's punk revolt. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST "PUNK ROCK" ALBUM
Though I have a hard time saying for shure, this is probably my favorite Clash album. Its passion for the raw hardcore punk style has always been entertaining. Even though the Pistols style was slightly more hardcore it misses the intelegence and creativity of this album. This set the standard for many punk bands to follow, a true Punk Rock gem. Rest in peace Joe Strummer.Though its impossible to know for certain in this case, I really hope he made it.

While American punk stayed pretty much underground during the 70s, British punk had a huge impact on its native country where it was seen as a threat to its government.During the latter part of the decade, kids were fed up with Britain's monarchy and ruling class so they fought them by forming bands and creating loud fast rock songs that spoke out for their anger. The Sex Pistols may have been the first to do this but the Clash did it by far the best. The Clash's first album was seen as to wild and abrasive for America so it didn't see that side of the Atlantic until long after its British release. When it was released, several songs had been replaced by others and the track sequencing was changed.

I owned this one on vinyl, but I no longer have a record player. I've been very selective in what albums I'm willing to re-purchase. This one is a must have.

Editorial Review

With a name designed to shock, and song titles like "Oh Shit?" and "Orgasm Addict" the Buzzcocks were proud proponents of British late-'70s punk rock. But in retrospect, it's easier to see what else they accomplished--some of the catchiest, most provocative pop singles ever. Pete Shelley expressed heartbreak and frustration ("Ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn't have fallen in love with?" goes one catchy chorus) without falling victim to lovey-dovey cliches. This definitive 1979 collection nicely captures the Manchester quartet's tight melodies, economic writing and appropriately fast pace.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuz You're an Orgasm Addict!!!
The first song "Orgasm Addict" is in my opinion the best. "Love you More" and "Running Free" are also faves of mine. I find the ones most other reviewers rave about arent nearly as good. As a whole, this album is essential to any rock/punk collection. It comes in at #358 on the RS500.. Enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars I just want a lover like any other.what do I get?
Amazing Buzzcocks collection. One guy posted that the sound quality was lacking but I think it sounds just fine.I play this album all the time.Everyone should have these classics in their collection.Definitely 5 stars, these are timeless late-70s pop/punk gems.

Editorial Review

Until 1978, Blondie was perceived mostly as a '60s-referencing, British-Invasion-meets-girl-groups band. With veteran producer Mike Chapman at the helm for their third album, though, everything changed for this group bred from the New York punk scene. Honing in on Blondie's strongest points--Deborah Harry's come-hither vocals and Clem Burke's powerhouse drumming--Chapman helped recast the band to the power pop side of new wave, and with impressive results. Driven by the punk-meets-disco chart-topping hit, "Heart of Glass," and the herky-jerky "One Way or Another," as well as a muscular cover of the Nerves' "Hanging on the Telephone," Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Peak of a Mercurial Band
I first heard Blondie's "Parallel Lines" LP while browsing at the Tower Records store in Westwood, near UCLA in 1978.By the time I heard the opening chords of the second song, I had a copy of the LP in line for the cash register.
5-0 out of 5 stars !and this is why i love this album
It did truly change my life. I was 14 years old. I was smart, not abused or geeky but i needed a true outlet... I had loved spinning girl group 45's and Beatles records handed down to me. Parallel Lines introduced me to sarcasm. And it stuck. Also it's just a perfect record. Mike Chapman helped shape my adolescence, but this is his (almost) crowning moment. Try not to scream: "I fell in love with you". Everyone should have Parallel Lines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rockin' with Blondie
Remember the sixties? It was a time when music was simple, catchy, short, and fun. Bands with silly names and fresh faces could churn out platter after platter of sing-along, dance-inducing joy, and soar to the top of the charts in the process. And then something called 1970 happened, and music changed. It stopped being simple and fun, short and catchy, and became, in a word, progressive. Now, this "progressive" music did produce a few good results (Pink Floyd, Fragile-era Yes, etc.), but frankly, the sixties were sorely missed. Enter Blondie.

It's pretty bad when it takes a punk rocker to make a great country album. But that's exactly what happened and thank god it did.
4-0 out of 5 stars this isn't regular social d
mike on his own rocks, but this has a huge "country" type feel to it, if you're not into johnny cash.. or willing to go beyond a punker boy sound.. this isn't for you.mike's voice still rocks, but the country feel might turn some fans off. for those that liked cheating at solitair this is a good bet.this would be a great addition/gift for anyone that likes country rock

5-0 out of 5 stars Old school country with an edge
Mike Ness' Under the influences is just that, true influences for every style of music. When I bought this cd the second thing I did was buy all of the origional material and it all blew my mind.Every song made to honor the origional artist.Remaking the likes of Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, and the Clash is a hard task for anyone, a task that should not be taken litely. This cd brings more than just good music it brings an added repect for the songs of the past, the songs that helped make the music of today.Overall a good buy. ... Inevitably labeled "pop punk," Simple Plan's sophomore album finds the Montreal quintet settling in as a straight-ahead rock band. Yes, lyrically, their concerns remain grounded in the adolescent petulance and alienation of classic punk. They're "the ones you love to hate." "You don't know what it's like to be me," they insist. "We're the kids that you pushed away," they huff. Musically, however, the follow-up to 2002's popular Read more

Im serious, I kinda cant help but think tyheres something wrong with the teens that listen to this stuff. i meen I guess I understand if your a teenage girl or something, but I can't imagine why a male older than the age of 11 would listen to this? Look this isn't an insult, its a cry for help.

NOFX's fourth album houses 17 lean and fast tracks crammed with fiery playing ("Dying Degree," "Leave It Alone"), self-deprecating laughs ("Punk Guy," "The Brews") and sharp commentary (Perfect Government, Lori Meyers). Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Neeeext...
I bought this album when I was 20 and drinking a lot of crappy beer, it goes along perfectly with that mind set in that you don't haft to really do much thinking or worry about getting stimulated into thinking. It's pretty juvenile. What I'm trying to say is this, if you're still listening to and enjoying tripe like this when you're 25 and up than you got some developmental issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
This is one of NOFX's greatest albums. It's not thier best, though. That would have to be THE DECLINE.The best songs are PERFECT GOVERNMENT, LINOLEUM, THE BREWS, and FLES, but the rest are great too.NOFX RULES!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Punk Album.
Punk in Drublic is NOFX's masterpiece. Every song is punk, there's no other NOFX album as good as Punk in Drublic. NOFX will never top this. Songs like Linoleum or The Brews are the best songs in the album. NOFX luckily never sold out because they are not in the s****y MTV. If you are starting with NOFX please buy this. You can buy also So Long and Thanks For All the Shoes which is great. This album is %100 underrated. Easily one of the most underrated albums of all time. Thanks NOFX for a Classic Punk Album. ...
