Editorial Review

Every generation of high schoolers needs a band to express the angst and agony specific to 14-to-18-year-olds. At present, that band is the Offspring. Their songs are aimed squarely at a younger crowd, from "The Meaning of Life" to "Leave It Behind" to "I Choose," and especially "All I Want" and "Change the World". Their occasionally insightful lyrics are anything but obscure, which is actually refreshing; there's real pain behind "Gone Away," and "Way Down the Line" taps into the common fear among the younger crowd of turning out just like our parents. Musically, the Offspring are hardly complex, but then complexity isn't a requirement. This is music to play at full volume, bang your head to, and annoy your neighbors. Cool. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Release, Similar to Smash's style.
Each Offspring album is a bit different in its own small way. Although, this is the one probably most like their breakthrough masterpiece Smash. If you enjoyed Smash a lot, like I did, then this should be the next in line for you to try out. Not saying that their newer stuff is somehow not as good, they just have a slightly different sounds that the earlier two. This follow up just shows how The Offspring are keeping their punk rock style sound strong with each release. It's also a really good follow up album. My favorite tracks are probably "Gone Away", "I Choose", "Amazed", and "Me & My Old Lady". Here's everything else rated...
3-0 out of 5 stars average...large decline gets started.
ignition, smash, and self-titled are amazing albums!...but what about this? the follow-up to smash....not nearly as bad as the dreck that came after this album, but nowhere near as good as anything before.
5-0 out of 5 stars awesome offspring album!
this has got to one of the offspring's best CDs, next to smash, and ignition! some of the songs like: "me & my old lady", "mota", "cool to hate", and "don't pick it up", are kind of wierd, but the other songs are awesome! some of the best include: "the meaning of life", "gone away", "i choose", "amazed", "all i want", "change the world", and just all the other songs that i didn't say was weird. the intro song is awesome, because it's spoken by jello biafra - and dead kennedys are like one of my favorite bands - so that's a huge plus! i think this is like more of an expiremental re-make of smash, and i'm just glad they didn't over do it, they just did it right. so anyways, if you're new to the offspring, you might wanna start with smash, or ignition, so you can get a better taste of their true sound. but if you already know who the offspring is - get this now! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My Turn
My first introduction to Deerhoof was getting Apple O' from the library and popping it into my car stereo. After about a song and a half I had had enough and pushed the eject button. I'm always trying to explore into different challenging types of music, but this was too much.
1-0 out of 5 stars More proof of P.T. Barnum's maxim
I made it half way through before piercing my eardrums with sharpened pencils. If you can buy the karaoke version, this might be pretty good, otherwise you will get more artistry from the latest Yanni cd.The vocals are so twee even a kindergartner would blush in shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some people will never get it,
but some people do. Deerhoof: love it or hate it; me i love it! This cd mixes the most angular dischord with the most happy melodies in such a way that makes my spirit soar. I just keep listening to the same tracks over and over again. 3,13,20 are just a few. And to all those close minded people who think only record store clercks listen to this, Im a 36year old music fan discovering as much new music as i can. STOP THE HATE! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Music/Listen/Repeat
At The Drive In have long been praised as one of the most innovative and extraordinary groups in music. However there was a time in their career when they were just finding their footing and growing into the monster they would become. The trial stage was "Acrobatic Tenement", but with this, their sophomore album "In/Casino/Out", At The Drive In displayed what they have been known for, for years now : Amazing song-writing. If you're not familiar with the early stages that the band went through to get to where they were, then this is of the utmost importance to listen to. Not just that, but it is even more evidence as to why At The Drive In was easily one of the best bands of the last 10 years, and one of the most inspirational and original groups to emerge in music.
4-0 out of 5 stars arguably their best
Most ATDI fans I meet say that this album or relationship of command are their best albums.I would have to say this is, in my opinion, their best album. The energy and emotion throughout each and every song is clearly heard.Acrobatic Tenement was a good start and it had the energy and emotion but what that album lacked was the abstract lyrical content of Cedric and some polish on the music. The production quality is better, the music is cleaner or more focused and it is obvious at how much the band matured from the Hell Paso ep in '94 to this album in '98.The music and lyrics are not as basic on this album as they were on previous work.El Gran Orgo was not a bad ep but you can tell with a couple members leaving after the first full length there was not as much that could have stood out on that effort.I think this is what they were looking to do.Relationship maybe a bit more accessible and the music shows even more talent for them than this album but this album just captures the essence of what this band was for me.This is the album that really got me into ATDI.To me there is not one bad track on this album. If you are new to ATDI definitely pick this one up, it will be worth it.And to the reviewer below me, some of the greatest voices over the years have sung way out of tune.Bob Dylan, Lou Reed....just to name a couple, and they are heavy influences on lots of people.Out of tune adds to the effect of this band cause it was not meant to be a flawless album. This band was not meant to be polished, they displayed the raw energy, confusion, emotion of youth.I really don't think people care how Cedric's voice sounds, its the emotion behind it.Plus you should go pick up a Mars Volta album and hear Cedric wail on those albums.Than tell me he is not a good front man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just amazing
Well I've heard their other two major cds and this one never really stood out to me before. I saw they had releases a greatest hits compilation and listened to one of the songs on it from In-Casino-Out and found it to be very good. So I gave the rest of the cd a try and was just blown away by the incredibleness of it. Evey song has that tight sound to it, its just rock thats perfectly crafted. It's fun to listen to, I hear they had an amazing live show and the energy the music itself makes just lends to it. I feel like I'm right there watching them while listening to this masterpiece. My favorite songs are Hulahoop wounds and Lopsided. Overall though the cd doesn't have a bad song on it and is well worth the listen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still whoops me today almost 30 years later.
I've always considered the Nervous Breakdown 7" to be the finest 7" ever made, which is saying a lot and, actually, virtually impossible to say considering there's so many amazing ones out there. But this one is something special. And when you hear it with the other 3 records here it shows you that BLACK FLAG created some of the finest hardcore punk rock ever.In fact, after their first album, Damaged, they stormed off the charts themselves, into some sorta experimental punk yuk, excluding, of course, the wonderful 2xLP, Everything Went Black of these same songs done by a variety of their earlier singers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kick Ass
Black Flag this CD kicks, makes me feel like jumping into a mosh pit at the age of 45 yrs old.It takes off where punk rock left off in the late 70s, makes me feel alive. If you like punk this one is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're going to own one hardcore record this would be it!!
This is one of the best collections of any band ever compiled! Comes with the classics by Keith and Gregg Ginn that put, black flag on the map!You just can't go wrong with the quick yet catchy songs that just stay in your head all day long. Fix Me and Wasted are a quick blur and that's how punk songs should be. Not some sort of Opera rock that goes on for nine and a half minutes long... Six Pack was always a funny song to sing along."What are we gonna do!?! the t.v. is broken!!! OH NO we're gonna miss our favorite shows!!""my girlfriend asked me which i liked better i hope she doesn't leave me"It's kinda of a two for one album when you listen to it because both vocalist brought their own style to the band.Find out what the fuss is over this band and pick up a classic comp! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exerburantly hard ROCKING.
Yeah, this is the one that got me going on the Surfers.I'd heard some of the earlier stuff, but when I heard this I was blown away! The guitar, bass, and drums are ROCKING!They really rip on this release.I was shocked to hear that John Paul Jones was producing them, but then I found an article in Guitar World about the recording of the album.I just love the part in the article where the interviewer is talking to the band about how this is by far their hardest rocking album and (I think) Paul Geary says that "well, John Paul Jones liked the harder songs, so those are the ones we put on the album".And the interviewer says "you let a producer choose the songs on your album??!!" and Paul says HELL YES, its JOHN PAUL JONES MAN!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars "A Doggie Dropped It"
Rolling Stone Magazine once slammed the Butth0le Surfers for being "so genuine in its depravity" and called them scary because "the weirdness is much too real to qualify as mere dadaist showmanship."Those comments are absolutely true and a great reason to love the band.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cd of 2003-2004
This cd is one that I played almost everyday for about a year. The first time I heard it I was blown away. It has great guitar playing, lyrics and vocals. Everything is just seems to be perfect. Dustin vocals match the lyrics' intensity and the rest of the band play at the same level. "Under a Killing Moon" and "Paper Tigers" were my favorite songs to begin with, but once I started reading lyrics all the songs became favorites. "Artist in the Ambulance" should have been a hit single if Island would have done their job right. It's a shame this album didn't go platinum. I think Coheed and Cambria record outsold this cd and it's nowhere near as good IMO. Anyways their new one "Vheissu" is pretty good but the guitar playing is not as good. Still check that one if you like them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite a piece of work..
This album was the begining of a extraordinary experience for me.That being the band thrice. This is the first Thrice album I heard.Actually, I had only heard one song when I bought it, that being "All Thats Left."I usually don't buy albums based on hearing one song, so I don't know why I bought this album. Anyways, after listening to it, it was different that what I had expected to hear, but I was not disapointed. In fact, I listened to it alot at work the next few weeks, and it completely blew me away.
5-0 out of 5 stars hard and powerful
It's a path that the band is traveling down. Each album is becoming more and more dynamic. This was the first album that I bought, after hearing the band on a local college station. After getting into the band I picked up Identity Crisis, and just recently Vheissu.I still feel that Artist is probably my favorite. The title track is especially powerful and dynamic. The emotions show through and it's easy to see how this is not any kind of superficial song or CD.Highly recommend this CD and any others that you can get your hands on. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enter The Knife
The Knife has been a persistent favorite of mine. They have a very unique sound combining distinct electronic beats with cryptic vocals. Highlights of the album: "Pass This On," "One For You," "You Take My Breath Away," "Heartbeats," and the pleading "You Make Me Like Charity." This album is your introduction to the The Knife - it should be bought and thoroughly listened to before buying their newmasterpiece, Silent Shout.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect
i probably would've given up on music if i had'nt found this album. this is my new favorite c.d. ever. also, possibly my new favorite artist ever. i cant wait to hear their first album and silent shout is well worth the purchase but this c.d...i can't say enough, i could never do it justice. i recommend anyone who's a fan of art music, electro, synth-pop, er wtvr to get it. its so creative and genious that it makes me jealous. i'm so glad real artists are starting to do great things again. that was a lousy ten years of underground aftermath. here we go again though. everyone shoot up the eighties and nineties goth club.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh yeaaah
This is my new favorite cd.I can't seem to get it out of my stereo. At first the price had me skeptical but I took a chance. Having only heard the song "Heartbeats" it was a risk for me but I'm glad I took it. This cd puts me in the mood to dance but at the same time has a calming quality. Some of the songs sound as if you're stranded on a tropical island. So far my favorites are "Heartbeats", "Pass this on", and "You take my breath away". It also includes a dvd that is very entertaining. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Band and worst cover
Other bands have performed covers of Joy Division and most were pretty bad. The cover that fallout boy made of Love Will Tear us Apart is just plain crappy. The singing just sucks (for any songs by fallout boy), not even close to being as good as the original. The cover is a disgrace to Ian. If you want a good version hear the original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Acoustic CD
To the last reviewer, perhaps this is the more sensitive side of Fall Out Boy, but is that necessarily bad? Their acoustic stuff is AMAZING, or are you too obsessed about whether this is "real" punk music or not? Honestly, doesn't it matter more the MATERIAL IN THE CD, not the LABEL? Everyone has their own opinions on music and I'm going to express mine....

On her second solo album, Amy Ray pulls no punches. As she sings in "Rural Faggot," "I know you want to know the truth, and I'm the dyke who will give it to you." It's an anthem worthy of Bruce Springsteen (one of the many here) within a song cycle that revisits high school rites of passage in the South while coming to terms with sexual confusion, desire, and identity. 5-0 out of 5 stars one excellent cd
I love this cd so much! The lyrics hit right in the gut and the songs are set to beats that really reel you in. Put it out for good, cover for me and let it ring are my favorites but there's not a weak song on this album period. I love the stripped down sound, the high school choruses, everything. Amy, you're great!

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!!
amy ray is such a talented artist and i love all her music.i litsen to this cd all the time it never gets old to me...thats how great it is.i loved all her work with the indigo girls but shes good as a solo artist as well.all the songs are great from start to finish.so if you want to support some real music...then pick this cd.you wont be disappointed trust me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one, it rocks
Game on, this is good stuff! To be honest, I wanted to like Ray's first solo Stag a lot more than I did, which is why I walked, not ran to Prom, But then that was before I caught the Indigo Girls last summer, where Ray and her mandolin wowed the crowd with the anthem Let It Ring.It was the first time I'd heard it and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

5-0 out of 5 stars AFI is best hands down
afi is my favorite band. this is one of there great EPs. resembles Black Sails in the Sunset, but different. my 2 favorites are Halloween (Misfits cover), and Totalimmortal. great EP.
5-0 out of 5 stars perfect
when i buy an e.p. i usually expect 1 maybe 2 good songs, a couple boring ones and basically something to snack on while waiting for the full length. and since they are only usually about 5 bucks, you cant go wrong. but all hallows is 12 minutes of the best afi material they ever released. while i guess its alot harder to make a perfect ep than a perfect album, this ep is perfect, every song on here is on my top ten favorite afi songs list. the sound of this album is slightly faster than black sails, but for the most part the style is very similar, except a little darker and creepier, hence all hallows. Alot of people say this sounds just like the misfits, not quite... i see the similarities, maybe fall children does a little. but seriously this is afi not the misfits. the ep starts with a creepy guitar riff that sets the mood immediatly. then it bursts into fall children; catchy, fast and energized. fall children was a fan song, and songs dedicated to fans are always great. then we go into a cover of the misfits halloween, fun song, probably the worst on the ep just because its not afi. The funny thing is that i think its better than the misfits version. The song is followed by spooky noises; it sounds like someone is strumming piano strings when you listen close, but it always makes me think of a haunted house. this goes on for a couple minutes, so it can get tiresome, but its cool, i think its a cool edition to the ep. then we get the boy who destroyed the world, some of the best lyrics afi ever wrote. this one is a little slower than the previous two, but probably better than the last two. last is totalimmortal, possibly afis best song. its the best one on here and one listen will confirm that for you. its fast, catchy, and magnificent. its by no way a cliche song, daveys vocals go all over the place. and he has something of a duet with jade who has a ghostly voice. When this ends, the only thing youll be thinking is "why didnt they write 8 more songs and make this a full length?" because 8 more songs of this calibur while may be immpossible, would make the best best album ever im pretty sure. so basically these are 4 songs that will stay with you forever, go get this, its just as good as any full length.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an amazing little piece of punk rock.
Okay, so basically, this EP sounds like a Misfits album, only the songs intelligent and are better written.I'm not saying anything bad about the Misfits.I like The Misfits, but this is just better. The best song on here, in my opinion, has to be 'Fall Children'.I can listen to that one over and over again, and not get bored of it.I also really like their cover of 'Halloween', and 'The Boy Who Destroyed The World'.'Totalimmortal' is alright, but it gets boring after a while.Overall, this is definately worth the 5 bucks I payed for it.If you're a fan of punk rock, you will really like this CD.If you're a fan of AFI's new stuff, you probably won't like this CD too much. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I'm Impressed!
I'm sure you've heard, Long Beach Dub Allstars is not Sublime. In some songs there is little bit of the Sublime style, but just a tiny bit; I didn't expect them to be Sublime either.I expected something totally different from what LBDA really is.And I like them alot more than I thought I would.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome album
When you buy this, don't expect quite the same as Sublime, but it's still awesome in its own right. Some songs are remniscent of Sublime but there's a lot more dub and reggae. I can't say the singer is quite as good as Bradley but he's still quite good and I love listening to this album on my ipod. It's worth the money just for "Sunny Hours," "Listen to DJ's," and "Lonely End" but the other songs are awesome too and this CD is a hell of a lot better than 99% of the crap they play on the radio. This is one of my newest favorite bands in its own right.

Sometimes things seem to connect with a past they don't actually belong to, but perhaps should have. Desiderata might seem to have been the work of a seventeenth century monk, but we now know it to have been written by a lawyer in 1927. The Ploughman's Lunch conjures visions of medieval farmworkers relaxing from their heavy toil over a wholesome refreshment, but was apparently conjured up by the English Country Cheese Council in 1960.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Pinnacle of the Pogues
When you're listening to this album, it's hard to place your finger on it, but at least for me, this is the height of the Pogues, and in fact it is the hight of the genre of music that they created. I tend not to buy the first album of many bands, because they are usually still trying to find their niche. The Pogues, however, obviously never had this problem, as the album immediately jumps into an amazing track in Transmetropolitan. In ever single track you can hear the undiluted, raw talent that make The Pogues singular and quite revolutionary. All I have to say is that if you've liked anything by The Pogues or any of the bands that followed in their footsteps, you will be doing yourself a favor by buying this album. Really, that's all I have to say about this album, but I'll add a sentence or two about each song, even though I think it'll be hard to put what you hear into words.
5-0 out of 5 stars The First and the Best
I first discovered The Pogues back in the mid 80's and once owned this album on cassette. I'm glad to see the extra tracks, particularly The Leaving of Liverpool, which is one of my favorite Irish tunes of all time. If you have even a drop of Irish blood in your veins this album will have you dancing in the streets. Excellent. Can't reccommend this one highly enough. Slainte! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This album marks the best time of my life
I am not sure what I would think of this album if I heard it for the first time in 2006.I imagine it would still be a great record, but hearing it when I was a teenage punk kid was a whole different story.Like another reviewer noted about the negative overtone of the album, it makes you look at the material, shallow, commercially driven life most of us lead. The line in Blueprint.....
      5-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't there...
You seem to be able to appreciate music more when the time and scene are just right. A new movement comes along and, as a participant, you are drawn in more. Fugazi seems to be one of thosephenomenom. To be honest, I find it difficult to classify this one into a nice genre. I always detested that, since it limits one's own ability to appreciate art such as this. But for all intesive purposes, This one is rock.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Ink washes out easier than blood."
Fugazi were one of the last true punk bands of the '90s, though to associate them with straightforward 3-chord punk rock would be somewhat misleading. Ian McKaye, Guy Picciotto (of Minor Threat, Embrace and Rites Of Spring respectively) and the rhythm team of Brendan Canty and Joe Lally played music that both abandoned the genre's limitations and celebrated its anti-corporate DYI ethos. While bands like Green Day and Offspring were watering punk down into commercially accessible territory, Fugazi stayed defiant while constantly refining their sound.

      Editorial Review

One of the true characters of L.A.'s first hardcore wave, Social D's frontman Mike Ness seemingly fancied himself a boot-boy Johnny Cash at the time of this 1983 release. The tales he spun--many of which were later borne out by stints in jail and drug treatment--blurred the line between American anti-hero and punk no-goodnik, between Cash and the Clash. And, unlike a lot of their Angeleno brethren, Ness and axeman Dennis Danell really knew how to write a song. Admittedly, this incarnation of the band is decidedly less accessible than the current edition. And while they may not be as anthemically inspiring as the more earnest work found on, say, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Punk Record!
I grew up on this album as well as Social D's "Mainliner:wreckage from the past" and let me tell you that after 10+ years of listening they have lost absolutely none of their power! I am not a fan of much social D after the early punk years. When mike ness lost the ability to sing reasonably and they became a weird rockabilly/country from the heart type band I said goodbye. If you enjoy bands like Black Flag,Circle Jerks,T.S.O.L. and others from that time period and cali location than you will certainly dig every second of this. The only problem I really ever had with Mommy's Little Monster was that it's only 9 songs long and that the album versions of All The Answers and Moral Threat don't live up to the Earlier ones (which appear on "mainliner"). Do yourself a favor and pick both up right now!

5-0 out of 5 stars best punk rock album ever
I fell in love w/ Mike Ness and Social D in the 80s.They toured constantly, it seemed like they came to the Cameo Theatre in Miami Beach (and when that shut down, 1235) at least 2X a year.Best energy at those shows, everyone screaming our lungs out to songs that told our stories. If you don't get amped listening to this album, you should really stick to emo-core fluffy music, and quit calling yourself a punk rocker.
5-0 out of 5 stars Social D at their best
Mommy's little monster is in my opinion, Social Distortion's greatest sound. I'm in high school and really enjoy punk music, So this CD's raw enerfy and blaring guitars is a good sound. Don't let this discourage you not to buy other CD's by them though, Because later Social Distortion isalso great, just a different, more mature sound. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good start, but lacking
I was actually able to get my hands on the Jam's greatest hits collection Gold. It's a two-disc set with disc one being the UK version of Sound of the Jam.The only difference with the US and UK versions is that the UK has six more songs. So basically, I own Sound of the Jam, and it is hard to say I am not pleased with.It serves as perhaps the perfect start and introduction to this very under appreciated band. It's in a nice chronological order, so it's easy to see how far the band progressed in their short career. In America the Jam is a very underrated band and this CD shows how underrated they truly are.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great primer for a classic British band
Across their six albums, The Jam touched on virtually every style in existance, and this CD is a great chance to see that. Their roots were in the punk / new wave scene, but frontman Paul Weller also had a lvoe of soul, funk and jazz, as well as an itneresting socio-political approach that had a different kind of bile to the Sex Pistols - it was perhaps more positive and inspirational, even in their early days.5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to an overlooked band!
It's already been said a million times, but I guess it bears repeating: the Jam were a smart band with an edge who were idolized in their native Britain but almost completely ignored by American listeners. It's sad, but very true.(In the States, Jam leadman Paul Weller was most famous for being the only featured singer who nobody could recognize in that Band Aid video of "Feed the World (Do they know it's Christmastime?")"Oh look there's Bono, George Michael, Boy George, and Simon Le Bon.But who's that guy?")Read more

      Editorial Review

On their sophomore outing, the Long Beach Dub Allstars display accomplished musicianship and stoned enthusiasm as they create a unique blend of southern California reggae, dub, and punk rock. Rising from the ashes of the now-defunct Sublime, bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh lead this seven-piece groove ensemble with resolute determination. Featuring the good-time vocals of Opie Ortiz as well as an array of keyboards, turntables, saxophone, and percussion, the Allstars shift from traditional reggae to hard-edged ska-punk with graceful abandon. Including an appearance by reggae singer Barrington Levy on the Sublime cover "Saw Red" as well as cameos by rasta-punk hero H.R. and Jamaican toastmaster Tippa Irie, Read more
