4-0 out of 5 stars my first patti smith album
for as long as ive known, ive grown up listening to distinct, strong, female voices.my father constantly played fleetwood mac and lone justice and looking back it has obvious influenced my musical tastes.the most fascinating and dimensional music to me today lies in bands like the distillers, hole, etc. This is because it shows the way in which a woman can take hold of something crude, something broken and make it new.i thought this was a purely modern thing until my father gave me "radio ethiopia".i love it, and honestly, i have trouble drawing any comparison between patti smith and ani difranco or liz phair because i don't like either of them.i think that the musical direction of today is such a good indicator of the way in which smith was so ahead of her time.i mean, "ask the angels" was released in 1976, but it was covered by the distillers in 2000 and i beleive it is just as relevant.

I have always considered this to be the BEST Patti Smith album of them all, rocking, wild, raw energy and rebellious spirit, decidedly uncommercial and I still go crazy when she does these tunes live.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars where have you been all mylife?
Marc Bolan and Steve Took produced 'Unicorn' as their third and final album together in May of 1969.Bolan's next release, 'A Beard Of Stars' would feature Micky Finn in Took's place.Finn would also occupy a place in Bolan's more notorious backing band, T-Rex, as they electrified their schtick with 1971's 'Electric Warrior'.Steve Took's contribution to this release, widely regarded as Bolan's finest acoustic piece, can hardly be underestimated.Though Bolan's Donovan Leich-like vocal mannerisms, compelling acoustic guitar playing, and composing talents are unquestionably center stage in Tyrannosaurus Rex, Took's vocals, bass guitar, and piano contributions are creative and indispensible to the finished product.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning work the like of which has not been heard since
Tyrannosaurus Rex, after releasing two charming but at times monotonous albums "My People Were Fair" and "Prophets Seers And Sages", perfected their sound on "Unicorn", creating a work which remains singularly unique in just about all genres of music to this day. Some T.Rex fans infatuated with Bolan's later electric glam image remain completely turned off by his earlier acoustic Tolkein-influenced work, but for those with an open ear "Unicorn" reveals just as many catchy, hummable tunes

I remember begging a girl in class Five ,1972 to swap me FacesNODS LP withsexy Poster FOR Zonophone Unicorn,,,I was SO Happy ..My Mother not so..she never got Chariots of Silk !! ..Unicorn is Marc at hisbest Tyrannosaurus..Steve Took nee Porter, so amazing..so Steve..Bless You....it transports you back in time.. wonder why its taken 36 years to give us the full treatment..In 1972 us Rex Children would have killed for an outtake...Thanks Universal and Barden/Paytress for your usual Bolan Gems..Pete Sanders should release a Book of all the BEST Bolan photos..Pete, you captured Marc at his Most Beautiful/ness...long before the drugs and Charles Sharr Murray stabbed Marc in every orifice known to NME.

Editorial Review

Stereolab must be quietly fuming: the sweet repetition on the 11-minute opening track"Fur Immer" here defines the parameters of the bachelor-pad band'ssound so accurately, it's uncanny. Until this long-overdue reissue, however, only a handful of famous and/or connected musicians--David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Add N to X, DAF, Blur--had heardthis relatively obscure album, first released in 1973. Stereolab isn'tthe only group this experimental, minimalist, unsettlingly beautifulGermanic duo influenced, though; you can hear traces of Suicide'saggressive disco-punk and almost all present-day dance bands withinKlaus Dinger's almost robotic, forceful drumming on "Spitzenqualitat"and the finale "Super." 2-0 out of 5 stars Noy? No.
As a big fan of 70's Krautrock, I've been intrigued by the buzz surrounding Neu! in hipster circles these days. They seem to enjoy a higher standing than excellent bands like Can, Popol Vuh and Kraftwerk, and my excitement increased when the cashier at the hip, indie-type record store practically gushed over my brilliant selection. So I rushed home to listen to it and.....was completely underwhelmed to say the least.
5-0 out of 5 stars We're gonna do it anyway
First of all, let me say that once in a great while amazon gets the track listing slightly off.I bought the album tonight and it is sitting here in front of me as I write this. The album, I assume, is supposed to look as closely to the original vinyl as possible. It even has the songs split into two sections which are noted as Sides 1 and 2.The correct track listing should be:
4-0 out of 5 stars Is there such a thing as avant-garde punk?
If so, it probably starts here. What do you do when you've finished recording half of your second album (despite you and your partner trying to pull it in opposite directions while dealing with screwy studio equipment), then run out of money and have your label refuse to advance you any more? Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother chalked one up for spite and finished Neu! 2 anyway, presumably through sheer force of will. Tracks were doubled, stretched, compressed, sped up, slowed down, remixed and voila - enough new material to finish the record. It probably wasn't intended to be avant-garde or a new experient in strange recording techniques, let alone to spawn a whole genre niche on its own, but it's amazing how things can take on a life of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best hommages ever made
Let me just say that I am not a fan of Andy Warhol, nor I ever was. It always seemed to me that much of his work was pure hype, and the minority that really had some value remained unobserved by many of his followers. Nevertheless, one was almost obliged to be thrilled when talking about the times of Andy Warhol, Velvet Underground, The Doors and such...It was the peculiar time in history of twentieth century which is peculiar in itself. And every artist that lived in those times doesen't stop talking or thinking about them, and the ones that didn't pay hommage.
5-0 out of 5 stars REMEMBERINGANDY WARHOL
Just an electric guitar, a piano and a viola are enough to draw the tracks' outlines of this work.
4-0 out of 5 stars Classic concept album from two musical greats
A stylish collection of songs that adds up to an elegant exploration of Andy Warhol's life and work. John Cale says in the sleeve notes - "Lou did all the work", but the collaboration is seamless. Lou Reed's affection for his long-time friend Andy Warhol shines through. A great addition to the classic album collection for fans of Lou Reed, John Cale _and_ Andy Warhol. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars yes it's an anachronistic lush masterpiece
He's so enamoured of place-names!--lots of Sagittarius in his horoscope I believe.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Album!
I must admit I was a little sceptical about this album beforehand; having heard that this was a very classical inspired album and that I might find it a little hard accessible. Therefore I was happily surpised to discover that this in essence is an album of mostly great songs - tastefully arranged and produced.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deja vu of elegant atmospheres
This album may easily qualify as my favourite John Cale album (a toss up between Paris 1919, Fear, and Honi Soit).Granted, it's not much like the other two albums cited; Paris 1919 shows a much more tender side to Mr. Cale, and because of this, the album almost seems to coddle you through the speakers. It seems to be a reminiscent whiff, and an attempt at recapturing certain moods and atmospheres, all of which make this album feel very familiar. This is not to say that there aren't more melancholic or upbeat moments; but regardless of individual songs, the overall impression given is of some tender longing, some whistful moodiness. As other reviewers have mentioned, Mr. Cale is backed by the core of Little Feat (Lowell George, Ritchie Hayward, Bill Payne) adding superb musicianship to the mix on favourite tracks like "A Child's Christmas in Wales", "Hanky Panky Knowhow", "Andalucia", "Macbeth", and "Antarctica Starts Here".Though it's only about half an hour, this album is definitely worth the price of admission. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Almost saw them live, but for my $#@% brother...
Ah the summer of '79- I was 15- My brother, 10 years older, had picked up a copy of "You're Never Alone..." which he loaned me, plus "Mott Live" & I was hooked- Imagine my excitement when I heard that Hunter, Ronson & crew were coming to play a show on Sept. 15,1979 in Presque Isle Maine- We were living on a farm in Centreville, NB, a hour or so drive away- I told my brother & we made plans to go- A couple of days before the show he told me he couldn't make it- I was devastated, but dealt with it- The day of the show I asked him if he was up to anything that evening & he said he was going to the concert- I know it wouldn't have looked cool having a younger sibling along, but to this day, some 27 years later, I still haven't forgiven him- I do have a copy of this now on CD- I had it when it first came out on vinyl & wore it out- It is a great recording! I'll never forgive my brother...

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is Where Ian Peaked, RIGHT HERE!
It has been said (by "whom," I don't know, I am no philosopher) that the greatest art is inspired by or because of the intensity of an emotion that one experiences. And 1980, the year that "Club" was released was just exactly THAT to me.I mean, as far as music is concerned, what more could I have asked from Ian Hunter? Indeed, "Club" features some of the greatest songs of his career (more about that in a minute), Mick Ronson was back playing guitar for him, and the band they'd assembled (evidentally, from what I've been told, some of New York's finest) was tight as a tick!I saw this same show in Atlanta way back in June 1979, and I distinctly remember telling my drummer, "Man if he keeps THIS up, I believe we'll jus' forget about the Stones for awhile!" All these songs on "Club" are faithfully replicated (save for the wonderful "doo-wop" version of "The Golden Age Of Rock And Roll"), and this album/cd even has four (well, three) studio songs tacked onto the end.And I want to go on record right here and state that there is absolutely NO JUSTICE if Ian Hunter doesn't go to Rock And Roll Heaven for (I have no superlative adjectives to describe it) "We Gotta Get Out Of Here," which is EASILY the very BEST "Disco Sucks!" song of all eternity. And "We Gotta" even has the alltime #1 BABE, the scrumptious Ellen Foley, doing the same thing to Ian that she did to Meatloaf a scant three years before on "Paradise By The Dashboard Light."But if for nothing else (and I'll admit this is selfish), the very last song on the cd is about/describes an acrimonious, excruciatingly painful divorce that Ian evidentally thru sometime in the near past - and I went thru MY first divorce in 1980, and "Sons And Daughters" helped me realize that I wasn't the only one who'd suffered pain like that.So needless to say, the album/and now, cd, has everything I could wish for on it.Again:This Is RIGHT WHERE Ian Hunter peaked! And a note to my musician friends:This is NOT Ian's "Sgt Pepper" -better yet, it's his "Get Yer Ya Yas Out!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow, wish I knew about this release earlier
A definite for any Ian Hunter, Mott the Hoople, Mick Ronson, fan.I wish I had the chance to see this concert.I like how the songs blend together and the Ronson guitar effort is evident.Sound quality is decent, also.Listen to this a couple of times and it will quickly become one of your most listened to cd's.It's a shame that Ronson only briefly collaborated with Mott the Hoople, obvious chemistry between Hunter and Ronson, as it shows, on multiple releases post Mott the Hoople. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Long Live the Captain!
well I have had many records by the Captian this one wasdissapointing hot head ashray heart great tracks but then he goes totaly manic not with all the tracks but some are out there I still feel that clear spot was his finest album ever great tracks all the way through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second to last album, but one of the best
"Doc At The Radar Station" was the second to last original Beefheart album before Don Van Vliet went into self-imposed exile, focusing exclusively on painting (one example of which adorns the album cover).Depending on who you ask, this is either one of the good captain's last hurrahs or a futile attempt to endear himself to the "mainstream" (okay, New Wave) rock audience. While it's more focused and concise than his masterpiece, "Trout Mask Replica" (the one that seperates the freaks from the poseurs when it comes to weirdo-rock) and generally abides by "traditional" song structures (i.e., songs with choruses, sometimes), this is still one prickly pear. While "Hot Head" could almost be mistaken for a song you might hear on the radio, free associative rants like "Sue Egypt" and "Brickbats" are the perfect synthesis of free jazz and rock, with one of the Captain's best version of the Magic Band ably keeping up with the surrealistic anti-poetry, dodging and weaving at the drop of the proverbial dime, and sometimes even coalescing into the kind of "groove" that only an epileptic could dance to.No one will ever mistake this stuff for a (groan) "jam band," however. This is music that can put even the most baked of potheads into a bad mood, and will convince "normal" folks that must have some sort of mental illness just for hearing it.Actually, since the mentally ill can be some of the most, er, obsessive listeners out there, they've made the perfect audience for Mr. Van Vliet.Since listening to Captain Beefheart is a lot less crazy than, say, believing in god, "Doc at the Radar Station" might even be a cure for all kinds of psychological problems.Heck, it's cheaper than a prescription of Haldol, or so I've been told.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHY?
Why do other reviewers describe this music as an acquired taste? I loved it the first time I heard it, and I still love it.It's musical and atonal simultaneously, it's wild and controlled at the same time. I am a big fan of Captain Beefheart, and love almost all of the stuff he recorded, (but not all of it).And I don't get how some reviewers are calling this his "punk" or "new wave" phase music, his stuff all sounds original, can't be categorized, and the ultimate litmus test is that he has his own "sound" no matter when he recorded any of his albums, you hear it, you know it's him. As for each individual song, it's better to just listen to the CD in its' entirety, instead of going into individual reviews of each song, 'cause its' all of the same ilk. Quirky rhythms, offbeat poetry, swamp blues, Beefheart madness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Television's Dream Adventure
"Marquee Moon" is the 1977 classic debut that embodies the truism that an artist/band has a lifetime to produce the first work, and seven months to get going on the second. MM is visceral, part manifesto, part New York's best rock and roll band creating tension and release and poetic evocations of lyricist and Delaware native Tom Verlaine's adopted hometown (the dense music evokes those Mapplethorpe photos that adorn front cover and inner sleeve, yes, but also the shimmering NYCscape on the back of 1981's "Dreamtime", too - blacks and whites and greys, shadows, shades of silver too, an impossibly bright toy night). "Adventure" almost intentionally aims for someting much different, lyrically both more erotic, explicitly or explicitly preoccupied with relationships, and yet on first impression less grounded - the imagery is often evocative of water, fire, air, gravity and the stuff of dreams ("Foxhole", one of two guitar driven rockers, certainly stands out for its images of earth and flesh, war and sex) . The lyrics are also full of frequently witty wordplay that's as earthy as much of the music is ethereal. And Allen Licht's notes notwithstanding, I can't see how anyone would find "Adventure" any more commercial than the debut. I'm happy the cover (it matters) is red (not early Stones/Patti Smith black and white) - even Richard Lloyd's jacket, zippered up (his gaze, disappointingly, cast down), is the same fire engine red that frames the band photo. Funny, "Adventure" didn't "hit" me with the force of that debut back in the summer of 1978, and my response was hardly unique. Yet in this newly expanded edition, the second and final Television album (at least until a fine 1992 reunion album issued by Capitol) is nearly as dazzling as the debut, despite the various 'issues' that plagued the band during the period of its creation (and led to its breakup)...Tom Verlaine didn't want another New York Rock album to follow MM, however coiled and (in)tense - as he remarks in the liner notes, he was aiming for a less hurried pace, and says he wanted various tracks and rhythms to sound "lumpy" as if the band were recording at some humid little studio down South in 110 degree weather, sweating and "sloppin'" through the material (I bet that's just what Green Day axed for when they cut their breakthrough, too); and the opener, "Glory" captures the less urgent(indeed, "lumpy")feel nicely, until you fix on the hypnotic buzz just beneath the surface. Next up, "Days", with Lloyd's exquisite Byrdsian guitar and its 'pastoral' lyrics, floats by like a dream. "Foxhole" explodes with energy: boldly sexy, funny, and a gritty antiwar song bundled into one - the band rocks and the guitars sting and slash and caress, like "Elevation" one more once. "Careful" may suggest the Ramones' "I Don't Care" thematically, but the words are more nuanced, the music jauntier, more playful. Then the first of Verlaine's longer songs that indicate a greater interest in keyboards and creating textures and moods outside of the two guitar format, "Carried Away",a seductive beauty whose pianos and guitars chime and echo out of the speakers, and features a brief watercolor organ solo. Thee meticulously crafted sound and relaxed rhythms evoke waves against rocks, and the lyrics' water imagery contain a suggestion that its narrator is letting go as "the old ropes grow slack." It's a lovely and slowly paced - yet compelling - piece you'll be carried away by. On the other side, "The Fire's" music is just as appropriate to its title, with "jacknkife" guitar slashing through a dramatic and unnerving narrative that achieves in a truly fresh and original manner what "Torn Curtain" from "Marquee Moon" couldn't, quite. "Ain't That Nothin'" is crunching Stones rock and roll with one of Lloyd's brilliantly planned and executed solos, and like many of "Adventure's" tracks it seems to fade too soon. The original album closed with a long moody, exotic, dreamy track Verlaine had first titled "Cairo" (as imagined by one who'd never been there, certainly not in 1880), its slow buildup, single sung verse keyboards, guitar effects, and watergongs closing the original proceedings with aural evocations of the unconcious and water and a Blakean/Paul Bowlesian lyric ("the dream dreams the dreamer..."). Slow fade back. The album, when released, clocked in at under forty minutes, and just like the charged/electric/forward motion of MM, this mysterious and haunting work was all over way too fast...
5-0 out of 5 stars take a chance
I had originally picked up Marquee Moon and couldn't stop listening to it. My thirst for more Television music brought me to Adventure which seems to be black or white to most fans.
2-0 out of 5 stars A different P.O.V. from these other reviewers . . .
. . . but an honest one. I got MARQUEE MOON back in the late 80s and went crazy over it. It's truly one of the greatest guitar albums ever and still trips me out to this day. I had heard ADVENTURE was good too, but when I finally picked it up I was sorely disillusioned. True, making an album after MARQUEE MOON must have been a daunting challenge, but ADVENTURE doesn't turn me on much. It really lacks the power and excitment and strangeness of their enduring masterpiece. ADVENTURE reaches none of the majestic heights found on MARQUEE MOON. I simply see no reason to ever listen to ADVENTURE when I can just put on MARQUEE MOON again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Album this Year
Sounds like Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody meets Pet Shop Boys and Young Gods. Awesome!

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give it 0 stars...
Very bizarre. I'm not quite sure why people are rating this so highly. It's strange, and quite frankly, it's scary. There's not a whole lot of talent here...all they do is chant and play weird background music. Kind of what you might expect to hear if you were in a room full of people who were doing drugs of the illegal kind. I am disturbed by the fact that people like this CD, let alone this band. I would probably only buy this CD if I were planning on torturing someone for information. Why anyone would make a song with the lyrics "Chicks dig metaphors...but use them wisely", is beyond me. I'm telling you...these people must be on drugs, because there's no way this album was made by sane people.

THIS AIN'T NO DISCO!
5-0 out of 5 stars Big big moustache
Hello you all big sound synth fans. This is the ultimate all-synth-all-analog-non-hype album. Georgio and the boys made a monster and this monster is still alive and stomping ... everywhere but in Ibiza and on the dancefloors. Put all the actual DJ's on the trashcan with their pseudo-y'know-big-analo-synth-so-cool-man-an'-sooooo-70'. Nothing's better than Ron playing with jacks and cables. Except for weaker parts (Academy Award ..) the rest is a stunning heavy fast train to "discothèque".5-0 out of 5 stars HEAVY CURRENT ELECTRO
This is the ultimate in synth-rock! Sparks called in the help of producer Giorgio Moroder and created an album that is the electronic equivalent of Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell. Dramatic and overblown, it works because of the sheer exuberance of the songs, the hypnotic beat, the falsetto vocals and the gripping melody lines. The most accessible numbers are Tryouts For The Human Race, Beat The Clock and the devastating Number One Song In Heaven (also available as a CD single in four remixes). Think of Kraftwerk and Suicide at their weirdest, throw in Donna Summer's classic I Feel Love, and you'll have some idea of what this album sounds like. An essential album for those who love cutting-edge synth/electronic music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock& roll,if you please!
The Groovies' 2 Buddah LP's(this one with "Flamingo",its predecessor)were America's best kept secret for almost a decade & it took a new version of the band(minus their incredible original singer)to bring these 2 gems back on the map...
5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Nice Rootsy Mix
.....And if you know what that means...you will definitely dig this album. Wow...what can I say about this album, well I don't think it is unbalanced as some reviewers have said. Actually, I think it is one of the best albums I have ever heard. I wouldn't label this as proto-punk(as it often is),to me it represents a love of rock music and the music that gave birth to rock. The proto-punkers represent that too, but this band goes into different territory...like country, blues, rockabilly, and good old boogie woogie type stuff. So,in this regard I think it would appeal to someone who is more "roots rock" minded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Added Tracks make this a Classic
This is one of those albums that came out in the 1970's, was completely buried by the corporate takeovers of record companies and radio stations, and remained virtually unknown among the general public. But it was listened to by almost anyone and everyone who was an aspiring rock musician -- along with obscure albums by THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, IGGY & THE STOOGES, THE SWEET, and several others.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bangs was wrong
Playing this (on lp, I haven't heard the remastered cd) after so many years was a shock.I'm not sure if I ever played it all the way through after buying it in the early 90s.Lester Bangs said it was emotionless and terrible, and I didn't bother to verify.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Peroxide Lou Scored With A Top 10 Album..
Hey, the previously unreleased track found here,Good Taste repeats "Your Making A Fool Out Of Yourself"..you can fool some of the people all the time but this album no matter how much Lou or the critics castigate it is still entertaining and is as retro atavistic now as it was then.
4-0 out of 5 stars Reed's Songwriting Still in Top!
Lou Reed's 4th album "Sally Can't Dance" is usually not regarded as one of his most appreciated albums; often criticized for being too heavily weighed down by too much horn and female voices.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grandioso Box set pero incompleto

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best box sets I own!Excellent sound and visuals!
I have this and The Doors Box Set, both are awesome! For the car I have Legacy: Absolutely The Best. The complete studio recordings is 7 cd's.6 remastered studio albums and an Essential Rarities disc culled from the other 4 disc box set. It's a great bonus disc for this set. Alot of the "hodge-podge" box sets (as I call them) have an Essential disc such as Janis 18 Essential songs which is culled from a box set. In this case it gives this box set some non-studio stuff to spice it up.And it does just the right trick!
5-0 out of 5 stars Good boxset, cmon people!
Im surpised at the rating of this boxset. This is a 5 star boxset. Each album as it was originally released. Each album comes in a cardbox replica of the original LP with a paper sleeve. All lyrics are included. Many photos inlcuded, some unreleased. Good liner notes. Top notch remasters. Complete studio recording of the Doors with Jim Morrison (lets face it folks, without him, is a different ball game). That is my definition of a 5 star package. These are the minor flaws I found. 1) Still, we dont have any mono mixes of the albums. 2) The booklet is glued and comes apart after a few readings. 3) I also had to re-glued my mini LPs, not enough glue was applied. 4) I think 100 dlls for 7 discs is a little pricey for Cds that can be purchased separately at a lower price. All things considered, the box set is the way to go to get all the Doors albums. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hunter Turns Killer!
Mott the Hoople was on a serious downslide since the summer of 1973 when Mick Ralphs leftto team up with Paul Rogers. The guy that took his place in the band got on well with the rest of the chaps and DID have the look of a T-REX wannabe but he DID NOT have Mick's Talent... Mott was on it's last legs but because of a Great album (MOTT) that were at the peak of their popularity, so by default this was the band most of us saw on the stages of America.
