Editorial Review

Spanning the punk and garage rock globe--from snot-nosed trailer-park kid fronting the legendary Stooges to universal pop culture icon and influential granddaddy of punk--the career of Iggy Pop has reached its fifth decade, and this remastered 37-track, chronologically sequenced set has been christened to hold us over while we wait for the definitive box set. Commencing with "1969," "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "No Fun" from the Stooges' trailblazing debut album, the first disc provides a ringside seat to the band's keg-of-dynamite demise Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Million in Prizes: The Anthology
A Million in Prizes: The Anthology~ Iggy Pop is an amazing anthology collection from an icon in the rock industry and rock music history. Iggy Pop has surprisingly good vocals, the lyrics are not as simple as one would have like thought they would be. I must admit that I only heard Lust for life and to be even more honest I had no idea that this song was written by Pop and Bowie. I love the photos in the book-let and the cover photo is vintage Pop at his best. I was a bit ticked of that they had not included the lyrics for the songs in the otherwise amazing book-let. This is a compilation that I highly recommend.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pop Rocks
While A Million In Prizes offers little for those who've kept an eye on James Osterberg's career since the days of The Psychedelic Stooges, as a five decade overview of the leathery Detroit legend it completely eclipses the hits packages that precede it. Whether it's garage rock, glam, punk or even Berlin cabaret, Iggy Pop has kept at the top of his game via reinvention, clever allegiances and simple survival.
3-0 out of 5 stars At Least They Didn't Call It "Greatest Hits"
I can remember a time back in the dark ages, a period I like to call my high school years, when a Stooges album was harder to find in Detroit than, well, the Stooges themselves, especially after that Michigan Palace brannigan immortalized on "Metallic K.O."

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be better!
This CD brings me to (good) tears every time I hear it!The music is beautiful in its simplicity. These are true legends at their finest. The fact that their hearts are open to this wonderful cause only adds to their talent and the strength of the music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it!
First. It helps if you like acoustic guitar.Second.Even if you don't you won't be able to find any other CD that even comes close to capturing the raw talent of some of today's legends.I can't help thinking that NeilYoung tells all of the performers to "keep it simple".Vocalsand a guitar work wonders with these kids. Tom Petty's guitar work isastounding, Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) vocals are pure, Simon &Garfunkel...wow, Pearl Jam...I'm now a fan, listen closely and Neil say'sit best..."Elvis (Costello) you're a genius!", the best song inmy opinion is Nils Lofgren. It's simply elegant. I came here to writethis because I love music and this is the best album I have EVER purchased! Please Neil...MORE! I'll be sending a donation.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
after seeing neil young's 1999 bridge school concert, i listened to this CD and immediately felt like sending $1,000 to the bridge school (if only i could afford it!).seriously, this album is the most excellent collectionof artists and their songs that i have heard. most collections areunlistenable after the first listening, but this album can be listened toover and over! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great compilation album
this cd spans three of the doors live albums and includes a never released the end, great versions of back door man, five to one, break on through and a good preformance of celebration of the lizard, buy this you will be impressed at the live power of the doors

2-0 out of 5 stars Something Better, Ya Think
I got this one & thought that the material & original album "Absolutely Live" was utterly terrible when it was originally released. So they re-release it with other vinyl gem (released later) on this set. I think if your just completing a collection, then this is fine. If you really want great "Live" Doors material, get the "Live" Philly or Detroit CD's. When this was released they should have forgot the "Absolutely Live" material & replaced it with some really important "Live" recordings. Also check out my mini site on msn "Judemac Forever"

2-0 out of 5 stars Some decent tracks but dissapointing overall...(2.5 stars)
In Concert is a series of Doors songs taken from various concerts during their more raucous period. As someone who prefers live vs. studio 99% of the time I was hoping for more from this album.I refuse to believe that these were the best versions of these songs and this album is pretty much plauged by bad choices.

Playing Rock's Greatest Chameleon was a great gig while it lasted, but by the mid-80's, David Bowie found his "Changes" led to an ironic dead-end. Yet this 1974 live album managed to distill his quicksilver nature as few others. Ostensibly mounted in support of Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Love it....
I didnt think Bowie could outdo the studio versions of Sweet Thing (it actually smells like a street)and Cracked Actor...but he actually has here. Incredible live recording....And the live version of Aladdin Sane is just stupendous...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Record
Sure. The original release of this record wasn't the best it could have been but that was primarily because of technical reasons. Even the original liner notes acknowledge that there were overdubs.
3-0 out of 5 stars A must only for hardcore fans
The critics have always been hard on this album, and no one more so than David Bowie himself."That album!I've never played it! ... it must sound like a vampire's teeth coming down on you.And that picture on the cover ... like I've just stepped out of the grave... that's actually how I felt at the time."

5-0 out of 5 stars 33 years later........
I pulled this out tonite for some background music. This is a work of art....It still stands up very well.I bought this in 1973 and somewhat took me time to understand the concept after Tranformer. It was nothing short of a rock opera about living in New York.

5-0 out of 5 stars warning: keep away from the suicidal
Lou Reed's "Berlin" is perhaps the darkest album ever made. That said, it is a masterpiece. The subject matter is unremittingly bleak but the lyrics are startling in both their empathy and detachment. In "The Kids" Reed sings, "They're Taking Her Children Away", and it is about just that, chronicalling the disintegrating life of a single mother, "Caroline Says Pt 1" tells the tale of an uberbitch and the man who licks her boots, while "Caroline Says Pt 2" (same Caroline?) offers the contrast of a beaten and abused speed freak at the end of her rope. The utter apotheosis of despair is realized with "The Bed", in which a man takes us on a mordantly matter-of-fact tour of the apartment in which his wife, and the mother of his children lived, loved and killed herself. It is absolutely unapproachable as a hymn of resigned desolation. "This is the room where she took the razor...and I said, Oh, what a feeling." The orchestration of "Berlin" is likewise stunning, ranging from full-on horns and strings ("Caroline Pt 1") to bare acoustic minimalism ("The Bed"). All in all there is nothing in music I can compare Lou Reed's "Berlin" to. It is perfect in its despair, but not for the clinically depressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dark Masterpiece!
"Berlin",which was Reed's follow-up to his highly succesful ( both musically and commercially ) 1972 album "Transformer", showcases a radical change in Reed's direction. Whereas "Transformer" was a mostty light and musically catchy album, "Berlin" is a more complex and darker album; both musically and lyrically.

Editorial Review

England's Faces (1970-1975) wound up playing stadiums, but they always had a compact, pub-band feel. They were proud boozers, tuning up wasn't a major obsession, and Rod Stewart(in pre-disco prime) always sounded like he'd sung himself hoarse the night before. They kept the mood light, but ensemble work was deceptively tight, thanks to drummer Kenney Jones (later Keith Moon's replacement in the Who) and guitarist Ron Wood (post-Jeff Beck, pre-Stones), who'd switch between raunchy lead and raunchy rhythm roles between beats. Wood's blues-drenched slide work snuffed most of his rock competition, and helped define the band's wiry sound. But Faces offered more than teapot blues. Tuneful bassist Ronnie Lane's sweet voice and countryish melodies--think "Ooh La La," revived as the movie Rushmore's closing theme--both lightened and deepened the texture. Keyboardist Ian McLagan picked and sequenced 67 tracks, programming them out of chronological order, to flow like concert sets. Included are abundant rarities--out-takes, b-sides, rehearsals, BBC-broadcast excerpts--including live takes of songs Faces recorded under Stewart's name, like "Gasoline Alley" and "Maggie May." (A few tunes are heard in live and studio versions.) It's a very good selection of music that wears remarkably well. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a drummer for a long ago opening band
Never think for a moment that THE FACES were not the epitome of sincere & home grown good guys. They were a force in rock that could not be challenged. At 53 yrs now I wish those wonderful days could be known to a musically inept bunch of cretans

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock n' Roll Perfection
This is what Rock n' Roll is all about. If you are even remotely considering buying this--it means you like good rock and roll, therefore shell out the dough. It's worth every penny. I have always been a huge Rod Stewart fan (one who doesn't buy into the "everything Rod did post-Faces is crap" myth), and this showcases his voice very very well. Rod and Ronnie were meant to play together. Throw in outstanding rock'n roll drumming by the great Kenny Jones, keyboardist extraordinaire Ian MacLagen, superb songwritting by Ronnie Lane and Rod and Ron, and you have a perfect mix for a killer rock band. It's fun, but it's also slick in some spots--slick in that they band played so well together. It's a shame they didn't do more. But this box set gives us hours of great music. If you are a Rod fan, don't even THINK about passing up this very important chapter in his career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art
As a long time lover and student of pop music, I declare Patti Smith's Horses album to be THE most original and greatest rock and roll record of all time. I seriously doubt there can be another record that will topple it from this position.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dylan's dog, he's got wings, he can fly!
I've already reviewed the earlier version of Horses so no cheap recap. I was at BAM in NYC November 2005 to celebrate the 30th year. Was struck by the generational cross section & diversity -parents with teen children (maybe 'Boomers with grandkids, certainly Gen X & offspring,) twentysomethings, lesbians who cherish the message in "Gloria," curiosity seekers, the tragically hip who missed it on the first (or several)go-rounds. That we're even writing about an album thirty years old speaks to its importance. Can I quibble about the new version of "Land"? Sure. Do I care? No. When I first heard some of these songs 30+ years ago they had completely different lyrics entirely (like "Birdland" - which started with Patti's poem "bar stools were made for women like this...") Patti was, and is, not one to take the safe road. Other than having to put on reading glasses to read her poetry (I sympathize - sucks doesn't it?) she is still a most vital force. If you don't own "Horses," what are you waiting for? If you do, buy this version for the 2005 version live. Long may she Wave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Patti
Some friends and I saw Patti and her band while we were freshmen at college, circa 1975-76.GLORIA is a classic of the rock & roll canon, of course, and Patti's version cuts into the heart of that song like none other, into the soul of being human, into the bones of being young and on the prowl. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Massachusetts When It's Late at Night
One of the greatest LP's ever recorded. If you don't get it you're already dead.If so, go listen to Journey and do us all a favor and kill yourself. It's mind-boggling to think it's out of print in the US.The Castle CD version is worth it just for the liner notes alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars It grows on you
My friend gave me this album and I love it. I thought it was funny, kind of silly at first, but the more I listen to it, the deeper the lyrics seem to get. Its a really complete album, mixing some punk elements with some rockabilly, and then theres the jams like "hospital" and "girlfren" which are amazingly beatiful. The vocals are in a class of their own because they're so unique. Its a must have for any classic rock fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inbetween the Velvets & the Ramones
If you are looking for the missing link inbetween the Velvet Underground and the Ramones, buy this CD. There were a few essential bands from this time period - the NY Dolls, the Dictators and the Modern Lovers. Here, on their groundbreaking 1st artifact, the Modern Lovers rock with the stripped down essentials of serpentine organ, sparse guitar strumming, and basic drum beats. Jonathan Richman's wry lyrics propel them into rock history. The lyrics of "Pablo Picasso" are as funny as anything written by the Ramones. "Hospital" inspires the same "Is he kidding?" response. Surreal lyrics sung absolutely sincerely. Not for nothing did the Sex Pistols cover "Roadrunner." Quote Johnny Rotten, "How does this song start?" The reply, "1-2-3-4-5-6!" Classic! Hasn't dated one bit. ... Read more

The last in the triumvirate of Mott's classic glitter rock albums, "Hoople" finds the boys near the top of their game. Although missing the higher number of standouts found on "Mott" and "All The Young Dudes," tracks such as "Crash Street Kidds," the Watt's sung "Born Late '58" rock-out sideways."Roll Away The Stone," and "Marionette" suffer only from excessive production; Hunter knew this was the end, and wanted to make every track resonate like a cabaret version of "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars exhaustive yet essential
The Platinum Collection collects 58 of Bowie's most beloved recordings
3-0 out of 5 stars One for completists
Previously issued as three separate discs, this set covers Bowie's career through 1987.This ignores the last 20 years, in which Bowie released eight albums.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Bowie Collection Yet
Up until the 3 disc Platinum Collection, there hasn't really been a great overview of Bowie's prime years (1969-1987). Previous collections such as "Best of Bowie" and "Singles Collection" were only 2 discs and there seemed to be too many great songs missing. Even at 3 discs, some of my personal favorite tracks such as "Moonage Daydream" and "Watch That Man" are missing. But when you look at the track list on this Platinum Collection, it's hard to think of a better Bowie collection than this. All of theessential classics, radio hits, and even great album tracks are here. There are even a few surprises like "Sorrow" and "Underground" which are often overlooked on Bowie compilations. Most of the tracks on disc 3 and some on disc 2 are single versions, but these are probably the same versions that you hear on the radio and are necessary in order to fit all of the tracks onto one disc. From "Space Oddity" to "Let's Dance," this is some of the best music of the last quarter century and David Bowie remains one of the greatest influences in the industry. To hear why, this is the one Bowie collection to get. Highly recommended. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The Real Epitaph
It somehow just makes sense that thirty years later you'd see a cd version of the same type of lame "new wave" cash-in albums that cropped up like mushrooms in '77-'78.The predictable and the loss leaders are all here, in a way that really makes me oddly nostalgic

3-0 out of 5 stars Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Boxset
Everyone can gripe about what they left out but I am more concerned about what was included. You get the obvious (Blitzkrieg Bop, Search and Destroy, White Riot, Blank Generation), a few real gems (Patti Smith's deconstruction of Hey Joe)and some real duds (The Strangler's "Peaches", Ian Dury "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll") to stuff that isn't even punk (Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello). Though its cool not to always pick obvious songs by an artist it seems that perhaps some of the choices were because they couldn't get the rights to better known songs. I mean whoever heard of The Soft Boys "I Want to Be an Anglepoise Lamp". I would have picked "I Want to Destroy You".Or Ultravox "Saturday Night in the City of the Dead". It was from the first album before they even developed their sound. So yes this is a history of punk but with pub rock and deservedly lesser known pop punk bands. Whoever thought that punk would some day be watered down into parent-friendly pop punk/emo that would crowd out the bands with real talent. So if you know about punk then the boxset may not really give you any more ideas but if you can't wait to catch the Warped Tour every year then "No Thanks" might save you from a life of desperation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect, I love it
It could have had some more artists on it. Many of the ones that are already there have 2-3 songs. But that's hardly anything to complain about, this is a great set! The book it comes with is also very informative, and has great photos of just about every band here. It even gives a brief explanation of why the Pistols aren't here, but you'd probably be better off just purchasing "Never Mind the Bollocks" if you care that much. Personally, I don't care that they're not included.

Editorial Review

This comprehensive five-disc retrospective of the Velvet Underground chronicles the band from its earliest demo tapes, recorded in 1965, to Lou Reed's final work with band, in 1970. At their notorious peak, Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Mo Tucker epitomized the sound of intellectual art punks being spontaneously creative in Andy Warhol's Manhattan. Rock & roll has never been the same since Reed's gutter-rock observations and Cale's cool, droning electric viola blanketing the band's mysterious three-chord innovations. It's all here: loads of feedback, classic songwriting, and Reed's transformation from Dylan imitator to sonic-rock auteur. With previously unreleased gems, live performances, and other oddities, this is everything you wanted to know about the Velvets but were afraid to ask. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Whole Is Not the Sum of its Parts
I hate to give anything by the Velvets less than 5 stars but "Peel Slowly and See" has enough unessential material that it weighs down the classic albums. The first disc of demos can really be only listened to once. Repeated takes of semi-acoustic versions of songs on the first album that don't go anywhere plus a couple of unreleased songs like "Prominent Men", from when Lou Reed was still worshipping at the temple of Bob Dylan. Of course, hearing "The Velvet Underground and Nico" and "White Light, White Heat" are a necessary experience in anyone's life. The first album (found on the 2nd disc with out-takes) was totally unique when it came out. Yeah there were maverick groups out there that experimented with noise (Red Crayola, AMM) but the Velvets were the ones that got it right, making any efforts of the flower children wilt in comparison."White Light/White Heat" (on disc 3) is a step further. It did not sell well at the time which was a reflection not on the album but how ahead of its time it was. It would take a decade for rock to catch up with it though some groups such as the Stooges were quick learners. "Sister Ray", in itself inspired bands and is a piece of punk perfection, an extended song that seems maniacally focused the whole time so that you can't take your attention from it. The clip of "Melody Laughter" on the 2nd album is a section of a noise jam, from a very listenable concert from 1966 that should be released officially. "Guess I'm Falling in Love" and "Booker T" on disc 3 are two songs from a 1967 concert that no one has heard and is rumored to be in the possession of John Cale and deserves an official release on its own. The out-takes on disc 2 and 3 are of minimal interest. The Nico songs are good but she would get even better when she left the band and released the scarily teutonic "The Marble Index" (produced by John Cale). Disc 4 contains "The Velvet Underground" a lesser (but still important album) after John Cale had exited the band. Recent groups from Galaxie 500 to Yo La Tengo could be said to be influenced by this album though it is nowhere near the masterpiece of the first two albums. "Loaded" (on the 5th disc) is of minimal interest. I'd recommend that you purchase the first two albums, perhaps the third and skip the box set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Despite a few flaws, an essential purchase
The Velvet Underground is probably one of the most written about bands of all-time. Their influence and genius is well-known so I won't bore the reader with tired truisms about the band. Instead, this review will be very meat-and-potatoes, focusing on the content, and pros and cons of this box set.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Collection
I like this alot.A lot of classics and some lesser known stuff. Some live, some studio.A good mix.Someone else mentioned they preferred the studio Velvet version of "Heroin" and I have to agree. At least maybe have the live and the studio version both included. The insert write up was nice and pretty informative as well.Check this out if you are a Lou Reed or Velvet Underground fan or want a good starting point to see if you will like his/their other stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars A mix of VU and solo cuts, how can it not be anything less..
Considering how far across the spectrum Lou has gone over a 40 year period, the songs manage to interweave nicely, and is not a conventional "greatest hits" by any stretch to be called "Ultimate" or "Essential". But it's typical of Reed to confuse, confound, frustrate, and upset critics and fans...
4-0 out of 5 stars A solid best-of
Despite the mastering Lou gave to some of those Velvet Underground tracks ( is it just me or did he put his vocals up higher into the mix ), I find this a rather solid best-of collection. It's a rather neat and tidy collection for those willing to buy this collection. Frankly I see this collection is better than the recent NYC Man with the added crap remix of Sattelite of Love which is here in it's original format ( and best ). I say this is better because I think you get a better feel for all the tracks and you get a more rounded idea of the personality that was put into the records. It's worth a try to see the many different levels/facets of Lou Reed's work on two compact discs. As the man himself says " try it." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and experimental.
This 1971 album is an excellent example of music that was coming out of the experimental rock scene in Germany during the early 1970s.Neu! was largely the product of a collaboration between Mike Rother (guitars/bass guitar) and Klaus Dinger (drums/percussion), with Conrad Plank as the engineer/partial producer. My own opinion of the album is that it is the finest that Neu released, although "75" is pretty good too.
5-0 out of 5 stars unreal... I am awestruck
I am flat out awestruck by this band. This album is just unreal... simply beautiful... remarkable music. Words, descriptions and trivial attempts at categorizing Neu! are futile. If you are the least bit curious about purchasing this album do so with confidence. Play the daylights out of it if you already own it. The music captured here is on a heavenly level.
5-0 out of 5 stars better than kraftwerk?
Formed by guitarist Michael Rother and percussionist Klaus Dinger, both veterans of Kraftwerk, Neu! (1972 - Gronland, 2005) pushed to the limit the technique of iterative patterns and the impressionistic approach that were popular among contemporary cosmic musicians. Pieces such as Negativland are essentially continuums of rhythmic impulses propelled by Dinger's legendary "motorik beat" and by obsessive repetition of ferocious percussive patterns (occasionally bordering on jack-hammer noise). It was tribal drumming applied to the devastating neurosis of the post-industriale era.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bowie's Most Underrated Album
It's hard to pinpoint which of Bowie's albums deserves the title "greatest"...there was a period from 1970 to 1980 where pretty much everything he released was an instant classic. From the timespan between "The Man Who Sold the World" and "Scary Monsters", the man could do no wrong.
4-0 out of 5 stars The weakest of the Bowie/Eno collaboration, but still superb.
"Lodger" is the third and final collaboration between David Bowie and Brian Eno in the 1970s.Recorded two years after the landmark "Low" and "Heroes" albums, "Lodger" does not quite live up to the legacy the previous two albums allowed for it, as though taking time out of the studio to tour somehow derailed the Bowie/Eno partnership a bit.Having stated that, had this is a great album.
