4-0 out of 5 stars Founder of Wendy's makes rock'n'roll!
Few people are aware that Dave Thomas, in addition to being the founder and spokesman of the Wendy's hamburger chain, was also the leader of Pere Ubu. Clearly Mr. Thomas wasn't in it for the money, since he made his fortune selling good old-fashioned hamburgers, and so he was free to pursue his own musical muse. The results are sometimes splendid, sometimes things go awry, but it's always the unique stylings of Dave Thomas that characterize this raw, passionate music. Kinda makes you wonder what would have happened if Carl Karcher, founder of Carl's Junior, had also pursued music with such abandon and freedom from financial considerations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Your twisted mind will thank you
The first two minutes of "Laughing" are like a laid-back version of the Stooges' "L.A. Blues," with a saxophone going quietly crazy while a guitar chimes in with chords here and there. The very first sound you here on the album is feedback, which continues even as the guitar begins to come in for the very, very postromantic love song "Nonalignment Pact." This is music with a screw loose, but in a good way.
5-0 out of 5 stars pagan apocalypse
The guiding theme of Modern Dance (Blank, 1978) is that of alienation and anxiety in the industrial society. Mutatis mutandis, Pere Ubu take the fear of the nuclear holocaust and transplant it into a different scenario, in which death is not physical but spiritual, not due to bombardment but to economic and social mechanisms.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but still good.
The Head on the Door breaks away from The Cures previous traditon of releasing dark and goth like albums. This album is much more mainstream and poppy then what I had come to expect from the cure. It is more inline with Three Imaginary Boys then Seventeen Seconds or Pornograpy. Highlights of the album include Kyoto Song, Push, and A Night like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Cure Album! Bar none.
When this album first came out, it was a total revelation. I had been a casual fan for a few years, but never rabid. This record changed that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just the best Cure, an all-time great by any band
There isn't much point in me reiterating what just about every other review here says.Into the late '80s, I'd heard and owned every Cure album at one point or another.Today, I own one and only one Cure album, and this is it.I even went out of my way to grab a copy on vinyl.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-own album!
Wow!At a time when music on the radio is so stale and you think everything that can be done has been, this band comes along.Besides being excellent musicians, they put on an energetic live show and have a sense of humor.Extra points for the pink xmas lights on the tuba and use of the phrase "socially retarded" in "Danglin' Feet".Their music was described to me as "mariachi polka punk" with a hint of Ian McCulloch (Echo & the Bunnymen) in the singer's voice.Sounds like a strange combination, but it works! If you are looking for quality music, BUY THIS ALBUM!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this album
An excellent band. An excellent album. An amazing show. A cool buch of people. Buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air!
This album is by far one of the best underground albums I've ever heard. It is a very unique blend of Russian/gypsy style music and good ole rock'n'roll. The magic created by this Colorado band is a wonderful breath of fresh air in the mostly stagnant popular music scene of the last few years. I challange anyone to listen to this album and NOT be dancing their all over the place! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This album marks the best time of my life
I am not sure what I would think of this album if I heard it for the first time in 2006.I imagine it would still be a great record, but hearing it when I was a teenage punk kid was a whole different story.Like another reviewer noted about the negative overtone of the album, it makes you look at the material, shallow, commercially driven life most of us lead. The line in Blueprint.....
5-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't there...
You seem to be able to appreciate music more when the time and scene are just right. A new movement comes along and, as a participant, you are drawn in more. Fugazi seems to be one of thosephenomenom. To be honest, I find it difficult to classify this one into a nice genre. I always detested that, since it limits one's own ability to appreciate art such as this. But for all intesive purposes, This one is rock.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Ink washes out easier than blood."
Fugazi were one of the last true punk bands of the '90s, though to associate them with straightforward 3-chord punk rock would be somewhat misleading. Ian McKaye, Guy Picciotto (of Minor Threat, Embrace and Rites Of Spring respectively) and the rhythm team of Brendan Canty and Joe Lally played music that both abandoned the genre's limitations and celebrated its anti-corporate DYI ethos. While bands like Green Day and Offspring were watering punk down into commercially accessible territory, Fugazi stayed defiant while constantly refining their sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars This album was probably better than the movie...ha
When I first bought and listened to this album, I thought "hmmm, lots of 'emo-labeled' bands." That didn't stop me from enjoying this soundtrack though. I liked the first two songs on this soundtrack quite a bit at first, but they got pretty old.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Flawed Masterwork
Seventeen Seconds is rightly considered to be the real jumping off point of the trademark sound that continues up to the present(Three Imaginary Boys wasn't very indicative). So, this is a must have, being remastered and everything. And a bonus disc. Oh joy!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a great addition to all Cure fan's collection. If you love the Cure and you already have this album, this collector version is perfect. If you're new to the cure and you dont have seventeen seconds already, buy this version instead of the single disk. This has lots of great tracks on it that have never been released before.^-^

4-0 out of 5 stars Good effort by The Cure
Seventeen Seconds is not the best Cure album ever but it is also not the worst. Unless you are a hardcore Cure fan I wouldn't recommend buying the Deluxe Edition. Most of the B sides and rarites are just more of the same of what you will find on the original tracks. To me this album seems like a sister album to Faith. Both have a simple yet dark(not as dark as Pornograpy) sound to them. Highlights include, Play for Today, A Forest, and Seventeen Seconds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my top 20 favorite CDs!
I don't want to reveal how many years I've owned this CD or the LPs before it...too many moons have risen. The previous reviews covered everything I agree with, but I'd also like to add that though the music is slower, it gets you moving. You can't sit still! The grinding beat, sexual and stimulating, and the lyrics...well, you just have to decide that for yourself, are too cool!
4-0 out of 5 stars Let`s Get Cramped
You`ve heard of them, you`ve read about them and you have no idea what the Cramps are or what they sound like.Garage, punk, rockabilly, surf and early rock and roll is what most will say they are but don`t be fooled.....this is great music by a great band. This disc is a good cross section of better known songs, covers and rarities and make this a perfect starting point for first timers.Live is the best way to experience them but this disc is the best place to start.
4-0 out of 5 stars If I had a band I'd try to sound like these guys
This music is slimey, grungy and slow. A mix of all the different styles I like in music. Cramps are what got me into Psychobilly. Though it is slower than most of their other music its not bad slow its the good slow. The creepy crawly horror where you know the monster is around the corner and you wait in breathless anticipation until the thing pounces. That feeling of anticipation is like what you get listening to this album. Most of them are covers like Ronnie Cook's slopper "The Goo Goo Muck", the garage classic by Randy Alvey "The Green Fuz", they do great justice to the genius masterpiece by the Novas "The Crusher" and the Trashmen's great "Sufrin' Bird" among others. There is originals on this album it is great sludgy music I'd expect nothing less from the psychobilly masters ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars underated
I think these guys make some of the coolest synth music around. They are not talked about alot. I love every song on this album. Holy cow vienna rules. The new synth fans need to check out some of the old guys who started this type of music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Epic Synth Rock
Midge Ure always steals the show with his amazing, almost tenor voice. But he`s a tremendous guitar player too, he was tour guitarist with heavy metal legends Thin Lizzy and that should be taken seriously. His arrival to Ultravox brought charm elegance and fresh ideas to a band that seemed to be a bit tired from the John Foxx era. This collection of songs must still sound fresh, because i`ve heard recently dance covers of " Dancing with tears in my eyes" and " Hymn" in the radio. They sounded great because they`re classics, but without Midge`s voice it ain`t the same.Ultravox were drum programming pioneers and on many tracks i even hear effects charged drums(flanger).Billy Currie adds nice synth and violin lines stamping a classic touch to the band in tracks like the popular " Vienna".Some of the songs haven`t aged well because the synth lines sound outdated but if you can forgive this this cd is fully enjoyable as any of U2`s 80`s recordings.Iwonder what could have happen if Ultravox had released something in the nineties. They could have been huge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to These Not-Quite Legends
Ultravox never quite achieved legendary status either in the UK or the US but several of their singles did. Shining moments include "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes", the most new wave of the bunch, and the classic "Vienna". There are many other good songs too. However I think enough people have talked about the album's contents. I have a different bone to pick. As Si Wooldridge laments, the legions of people who call this synthpop are way off. He is also correct that they were a rock band that just used synths to add mood to their music. The endless comparisons to Alphaville, OMD or Depeche Mode are pointless... they are in a different genre altogether. However there is a connection to straight synthpop via the Visage side project whose single "Fade To Grey" remains a genre masterpiece. The most accurate comparison for UV is to Roxy Music. Both bands made stylized post-Glam following in the footsteps of Bowie. Both utilized electronics to generate atmosphere and ambience; neither used such instruments to craft punchy dancefloor hooks. Both were led by accomplished vocalists whose personality and charisma often dwarfed the bands: Ultravox by Ure and Roxy by Ferry. If someone picks this up expecting bleepy 80's synth music they will be let down greatly. Generally speaking this is not meant to be slammin' club music. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Compilation
Although it's no longer necessary, this was collection of early DM songs was essential when it was released. Depeche Mode had little exposure in America during the early 80s, and most of their albums were unavailable. After the release of the American only album, People are People became a big sucess, Sire decided to release a compilation of early DM singles, both for the benefit of American fans and to cash in. The result is Catching Up With Depeche Mode, an outdated but fun compilation.

4-0 out of 5 stars no smooth Jaz here. . .
I hesitated buying this one because when I listened to it on the 'listening station' headphones it sounded like the generic hell. I later bought it anyway. It wasn't until I played it in my car that I truly appreciated the '79 mix' of this thing. Geordie's guitar EQ sounds absolutely great through my Mazda's 9x6's. I'm actually enjoying this more than the s/t '03 release because it sounds more like their live show. I'm not usually a lo-fi fan but I've certainly grown to appreciate Hosannas.

5-0 out of 5 stars great music, great artwork, great band

4-0 out of 5 stars Infinite Jest?(oh yes, I went there...)
When a rock band reaches a certain point in it's life cycle, it seems that each release ends up being seen as a comeback.Following up 1988's dismalOutside the Gatewith the magnificently sprawlingExtremities, Dirt and Other Repressed Emotionsin 1990, was Killing Joke's second comeback (the first being 1982's "Birds of a Feather" ep, which came after an abortive retreat to Iceland to escape the Apocalypse.) Since then, each of the Joke's successive releases seems to have been subjected to that special type of scrutiny which is afforded the dreaded "comeback album."

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Stuff
I am an avid listener of all things Celtic and would consider this to be one of the top Celtic albums and groups.Duggins has a powerful voice which I find easier to listen to than Flogging Molly. The music relys on powerful banjo and mandolin performances which helps steer them clear of obnoxious guitar riffs which can so often detract from a strong celtic group. The Tossers do a nice job of mixing American themes along with Irish themes and make sure you know that they are from Chicago. All in all the vocals are amazing and have you singing along from the first song to the last. The music makes you want to get up and stomp your feet along with it.What makes the album even better is if you have ever seen the Tossers perform live, then you realize just how much passion and energy they put into their music.I highly recommend this album for anyone who enjoys powerful celtic music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Celtic music is AWSOME!
I have been a fan of the dropkick murphys for many moons and also a fan of flogging molly.Though far more obscure the tossers are in the same leage as the previously mentioned bands.Though people say that they are irish punk i feel that they are realy closer to traditional irish music with a hint of punk influence.the resulting sound is astounding.this is the only tossers cd that i own but they are a new discovery for me and i plan on purchasing many more cds of theirs.i highly recomend this for anyone who likes irish music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Irish influenced album of 2005!
Inspired by bands like the Chieftains and Pogues in their Irish influenced folk/punk ways, we have the Tossers from Chi-town. As an avid fan of this genre I must say that the Tossers just keep getting better & better with each new album they put out.Their new album "The Valley of the Shadow of Death" blew me away the first time I heard it and still continues to do so.It's been two years since "Purgatory"(their last album) came out and I've been anxiously awaiting any new Tossers material.Unlike most bands of this genre that rely so much on traditional Irish tunes to carry most of their album, the Tossers possess tons of creativety when writing their own original lyrics. Lead singer and mandolin player, T. Duggins voice just matches the music so well, just check out the opening line in "Criminal of Me"-"My great, great, GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT Granda was a king!" and Becca's fiddle playin' sounds so superb, especially on the traditional "Preab San Ol"(translate "another round" of drinks) which opens up with 2 verses of Gaelic Irish, followed by 2 verses of English, but damn! This tune really jams out as it develops and now has become my favorite on the album. From the anthem like "No Loot, No Booze, No Fun" to the angst fury found on "I've Pursued Nothing" and to the inspirational "Crock of Gold"(would even make Shane MacGowan proud), there's not a bad track to be found on this album. They may not be as well known like other Irish influenced bands out there, but who cares! If they wanted Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys fans they could easily grab them.So without hesitation I can easily say this is the best Tossers album to date and the best Irish influenced album of 2005 and I highly recommend it! ... Editorial Review

This is one of the greatest statements of the early days of American punk rock. Boston-based Mission of Burma created an intense, somewhat claustrophobic sound that was based neither on speed nor brevity. They bash and flail on their instruments, and the music is dense (including early tape manipulations), but the songs are intelligent and captivating. "Secrets" unfolds into directed chaos with an anthemic feel; "Trem Two" also has a great sense of dynamics. Several band members contribute songs, which also keeps the album engaging. Released in 1982 but still fresh. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected
I was pleasantly surprised at how good this album was.Every song has its own hook, its own sound. Not all songs are fast and hard (although the ones that are, are good).Good melodies and impassioned singing. One of the best albums of the early '80s.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Bought It Way Back When
I don't know where I first heard Mission of Burma, but it was pretty early on in their existence, because I had all their records AS records. They were a favorite right away, and ranked up with The Fall, Flipper and Wire's album "Pink Flag" as the favorite music of my late teen and early 20's years.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is an essential for any music collection
Mission of Burma is without a doubt one of the most exciting, intense, cerebral, inticing, and genius groups to ever live. This disc is proof of that. Songs like "Trem Two" and "Weatherbox" show off the groups' more avant-garde leanings, whereas gems like "Mica" and "That's How I Escaped my Certain Fate" are pure, unpretentious art punk. The range of musical diversity in this one album is absolutely mind-blowing. "Vs." was originally released in 1982 and it sounds as if it could have been recorded today. A truly remarkable feat in independent music by 1982's or 2004's standards. My advice: buy this album and study it. Listen to it many, many, many times for not only the songs, but the song structures, as they are the most exciting part of any Burma song. I truly believe that no one has been able to top Burma yet, and no one ever will be able to for that matter. And it is an absolute miracle that they reunited and are playing live once again. It almost makes me believe that there is a god if such a talented band could join forces again after a 22-year hiatus. So listen, learn, and rock out as hard as you possibly can because life is too short to listen to watered-down "punk rock" like Blink 182 or NOFX. If you want the real deal, the real gritty in-your-face intelligent kind of stuff, then you have come to the right place. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Genuinely clever, profoundly sophomoric -- this NYC duo carry on tweaking pop songcraft in fine Bonzo Dog Doo Dah tradition."The Statue Got Me High" is the zippy standout; other winners include "Narrow Your Eyes," "Guitar" (a smarmy remake of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight") and the cut-and-paste dementia of the 21-part "Fingertips." --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything is catching on fire
This cd is beyond belief.Beyond all known things.Beyond imagination of the imaginable imaginative.I have listened, and have found, that time and space are now a mystery to me.You MUST for your own health, safety, and sanity, purchase this beautiful display of words placed in no certain order. On a scale of one to ten, this cd is awesome.

3-0 out of 5 stars funny stuff
The only way to explain this c.d. is that it is like a strange adult version of children sing-a-longs. Pretty catchy with odd lyrics (such as; I walk along darkened cooridoors or turn around, theirs a skull there on the ground)my favorite one being either mammels or turn around.
1-0 out of 5 stars They Write Theme Songs Good, Unfortunately, That Doesn't Count For Anything
All this is iis a bunch of 1:00 long songs that are all crap. They should have put This Might Be A Wiki or at least Boss of Me on here. But, unfortunately, it's a FLOP! FLOP! FLOP! Useless noise!

Editorial Review

This remarkable debut album, released a full seven years after the group had formed, was still way ahead of its time back in 1978. Suicide--Alan Vega on vocals and Martin Rev on keyboards and drum machine--are one of the most original acts in the history of popular music. They're often called the first synthpop act; synth-Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, brilliant, terrifying CD
Biker gangs, teenag e sweethearts, TV stars and psycho killers are just some of the images conjured up on this unique slice of electric punk from '77.
4-0 out of 5 stars Post-punk... pre-Ramones?! [4.5 stars]
Alan Vega and Martin Rev were WAAAY ahead of their time. Though their debut wasn't officially released until '78 (and even then, it predated the debuts of Joy Division, Killing Joke, The Cure, and possibly even PiL by about a year or so), this guitarless NY duo had been around since '71.
2-0 out of 5 stars How much can you endure?
O.K., There is no doubting that Suicide was a big influence on what would happen in the early 80's. I don't think people were pissed of with them for lack of guitars or drums. It was simply more of a provocative endurance test where the artistic statement became more important than music. I love Captain Beefheart and The Residents and such. But Suicide (along with Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music) is just not that much fun to listen too unless you need bragging rights for just being able to endure the pain that this record dishes out.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Real Epitaph
It somehow just makes sense that thirty years later you'd see a cd version of the same type of lame "new wave" cash-in albums that cropped up like mushrooms in '77-'78.The predictable and the loss leaders are all here, in a way that really makes me oddly nostalgic

3-0 out of 5 stars Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Boxset
Everyone can gripe about what they left out but I am more concerned about what was included. You get the obvious (Blitzkrieg Bop, Search and Destroy, White Riot, Blank Generation), a few real gems (Patti Smith's deconstruction of Hey Joe)and some real duds (The Strangler's "Peaches", Ian Dury "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll") to stuff that isn't even punk (Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello). Though its cool not to always pick obvious songs by an artist it seems that perhaps some of the choices were because they couldn't get the rights to better known songs. I mean whoever heard of The Soft Boys "I Want to Be an Anglepoise Lamp". I would have picked "I Want to Destroy You".Or Ultravox "Saturday Night in the City of the Dead". It was from the first album before they even developed their sound. So yes this is a history of punk but with pub rock and deservedly lesser known pop punk bands. Whoever thought that punk would some day be watered down into parent-friendly pop punk/emo that would crowd out the bands with real talent. So if you know about punk then the boxset may not really give you any more ideas but if you can't wait to catch the Warped Tour every year then "No Thanks" might save you from a life of desperation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect, I love it
It could have had some more artists on it. Many of the ones that are already there have 2-3 songs. But that's hardly anything to complain about, this is a great set! The book it comes with is also very informative, and has great photos of just about every band here. It even gives a brief explanation of why the Pistols aren't here, but you'd probably be better off just purchasing "Never Mind the Bollocks" if you care that much. Personally, I don't care that they're not included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent remaster....
I couldn't ask for better sound and care for the album's restoration and re-release.If you've got the original CD edition, this remaster necessitates a repurchase. If you're a newcomer, SPEAK & SPELL is a real treat, displaying a young and perhaps naive Depeche Mode, with Vince Clarke as their main songwriter. A very memorable and trendsetting album. The bonus DVD's documentary is also first-rate.

4-0 out of 5 stars ¿Por que tanta queja?
1-0 out of 5 stars No SACD !!! Don't bother buying with this one...
This US release was supposed to be like the UK release and include a hybrid SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) as well as the DVD. It does not. The SACD has been replaced by a regular CD. Extremely disappointing ! I'll be purchasing the UK release instead...
