4-0 out of 5 stars A great collection, but only of real value to collectors.
For quite a while, "Staring at the Sea: The Singles" was an essential package of music by the Cure and a fine introduction to their catalog-- in recent years its value has been minimized by the appearance of the "Greatest Hits" compilation, a retrospective spanning the band's career on Fiction Records. For collectors though, the opening track, "Killing an Arab" is worth the price of admission.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation of Early Cure
This was the 1st Cure album I had bought, and I really wasn't sure what to expect. The only songs I was familiar with were "Boys Don't Cry", "In Between Days", & "Close To Me". Wow! Everysong is great, and very diverse styles & moods as the album goes on. After that I had gone out & purchased just about all of their albums. My only gripe is that it needs to be remastered! How about a 20th Anniversery re-release???

5-0 out of 5 stars I Give You Exhibit A
Although their legions of fans would beg to differ and albums like "Disintegration" and "The Head on the Door" make a compelling argument to the contrary, The Cure have always been, first and foremost, a singles band.Need proof?Exhibit item A: "Staring at the Sea -- The Singles."

Editorial Review

Most great rock has embraced the influences of the past with a contemporary urgency and seldom an eye on the future. And if Richard Butler and the Psychedelic Furs took critical heat for fusing the pulsing darkness of the Velvet Underground with Iggy Pop edginess and a few mid-'70s U.K. art-rock flourishes (most notably Berlin-period Bowie and Roxy Music), they were only doing what rock artists had already been doing for decades; their chief sin seemed to be doing it in an era when musicians seemed expected to reinvent themselves every six months. This single disc effectively documents the Furs' canon from the droning menace of "Sister Europe" (from their highly recommended debut album) through the original, nonsoundtrack version of "Pretty in Pink," and on to an increasingly pop-influenced body of '80s work ("Love My Way," "Heaven," "The Ghost in You"). Ironically, as they distanced themselves from the late-'60s through mid-'70s influences they'd been criticized for aping, their sound took on the synth- and production-heavy trappings of '80s pop clichés. 4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite all
I usually hate when people say this, but now I'm going to do it:Get the original albums. If for no better reason than to hear "Goodbye" on Forever Now (IMO an immaculate album, and easily the best one if you want to hear the Psychedelic Furs at their best).KROQ 106.7 FM in L.A. played that tune constantly, along with "Love My Way" and its exclusion here is inexcusable. Not that this is a bad collection -- It has most of the essentials -- but it's also missing "Into You Like a Train"; another glaring omission. Most tunes familiar to the casual listener are concentrated on Forever Now and Mirror Moves. And even if you disagree and think this stuff is too dated to get seriously involved in, and only get those two albums; you must:Those and Should God Forget (the better, and far more comprehensive, two CD collection) may make a somewhat representative Psy Furs short list.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Walk Into The '80s But Beware The Cliches
In the interest of full disclosure, I must state the following for the potential buyer:
4-0 out of 5 stars All That Money Wants
It's a given that 2-disc compilations cost more than a single disc package, but The Psychedelic Furs are deserving of a double disc "hits" collection (***Note*** "Should God Forget" is a double set, but includes many live tracks, alternate takes, and lesser known tracks). If the executives at the helm felt this was too cost prohibitive, an alternative strategy the record label could have employed would be to release a single disc compliation for the casual listener and a more comprehensive double set for the more serious listener. This has been done before: see David Bowie's "Best of Bowie" for example.

Helmed by the unabashed rock-god vocal sass of frontman Michael Hutchence and powered by a club-pub musical ethos rooted in the '70's funk and R&B of Chic and others, Australia's INXS became international superstars by cutting against the grain of '80s new wave and '90s post-punk. That rhythmic spirit infuses much of this comprehensive 21-track hits anthology, which leans smartly on single versions ("Need You Tonight," "Original Sin," "Not Enough Time") and remixes (maxi-singles of "Suicide Blonde" and "Devil Inside") to set it apart from previous INXS single-disc collections. Two previously unreleased outtakes (the nervous "Salvation Jane" from Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD, Great Price!!
This cd is for the casual fan, but it can also satisfy fans who want single versions of some of the more popular songs, such as "Need You Tonight."The price speaks for itself.I got it at Wal-Mart for $7.00!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gift of INXS
As a ex-pat Canadian living in OZ, I was fortunte to experience the energy of INXS live many times in their early years. As you are reading this, I strongly urge you to get all the songs on INXS that you can.Michael and the band were a unit and their music speaks, no , sings to that.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for INXS Fans
If you are a new INXS fan this CD will introduce you to the hits that made INXS one of the best bands ever. But don't listen only to this CD as there are many other songs that make INXS so great. If you are an old INXS fan you probably have everything on this CD, but it is worth buying to hear some of the different mixes. The bonus tracks are definitely INXS, but they are at best "B" side tracks that need a lot of polishing.INXS would have done better to add two more classic INXS tracks to the CD such as Heaven Sent and Mediate.Overall, not disappointing, but could have been a little better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I first heard this record either my sophomore or junior year in college. It was late one night and I'm sitting at my computer reading music reviews and I always heard these great things about the album "Remain In Light" as well as the Talking Heads. Rolling Stone (a magazine I cannot stand primarily for the rankings they always do) ranked this record the third greatest album of the 80's. (After #1 "London Calling" and #2 "Purple Rain"). I'm a lover of old-school music so I had to hear this record....I had to hear the Talking Heads. Luckily, my roomate had this CD and I listened to it at about 2 in the morning.
4-0 out of 5 stars The best Heads CD ever.
Adrian Belew makes this an incredible Cd. Great sounds come from his fingers and leaves you wondering how in the world did he make his guitar make that sound? Listening Winds is a great tune with terrorist's point of view. I am not all hot on terrorists but it's a good song. And of course the song about the water going under is the bomb from way back. This CD still holds the same place in my heart as it did 20 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't You Miss It... Some of You People Just About Missed It...
No one agrees on the exact definition of punk, and even if some consensus was reached, the word "punk" would still evoke images of leather clad snotty young men hammering out 3 chord anthems. New wave is considered by many to be nothing more than danceable punk music boasting synthesizers and pop melody. For these reasons, I feel uncomfortable labeling Remain in Light as either a punk or a new wave album. I could say it is an alternative album, but alternative is such a broad and vague term that many fans of the alternative chart-topping groups of the 90's would tilt their head and furrow their brows in puzzlement upon hearing said alternative masterwork Remain in Light, and I wouldn't blame them. This album doesn't have the "cool" of other alternative touchstones such as The Velvet Underground & Nico, Unknown Pleasures or Nevermind. In fact, Remain in Light at times sounds downright nerdy. My utter worship and perhaps even over romanticism of this album did not take root instantly. In fact, when I first heard it, I laughed. This is what inspired bands such as Radiohead? This is what the most respected indie critics cite as the perfection of alternative music? It cannot be, as this is simply a bunch of panicky inarticulate noise! I was right in a way, but I was wrong in a way as well. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've got the problem, then I've got the Cure!
As many reviewers have stated, this is pretty much The Cure's singles volume 2.In my opinion, these are the best Cure songs and much better than the older stuff (except "Boys Don't Cry" was an awesome song from "Staring At The Sea: The Singles). On this CD, you are taken on a rollercoaster of Robert Smith and company's tragic tales of love and lost love.I love how so many of the songs have so many layers in it.The song will start with some guitar, bass, and drums, and then will build up and kick in some keyboards, and by the time Smith's voice begins you're already bobbing your head. Many have tried to copy The Cure's signature sound, but none have been able to outdo them. Most of the songs on here are excellent with a few so-so tracks. The best songs are: Just Like Heaven (easily my favorite song by The Cure - "'Show me show me Show me how you do that trick The one that makes me scream' she said."Love it!), Catch, Why Can't I Be You?, Pictures of You, Close To Me (which the Get Up Kids did a nice cover of), Friday I'm In Love, and Lovesong. While he sings, you can just picture Robert Smith, with all his makeup and fingernail polish and think, "Man, this guy's got some issues with love!"But it is his passion in every word he sings that makes you feel his pain as well as his joy. It's like he is singing the words that you have wanted to say and never knew how to express. Please do yourself a favor and buy this CD.You'll be happy you did!

5-0 out of 5 stars Robert Smith is god
For all of you guys who weren't born late in the 1970's, this could be a perfect introduction to a band who made a clear path to all of our minds and souls since back then. If you can find peace and joy in "High", "In between days" and "Just Like Heaven" and let the music flow in your heart for a moment while Smith plays his sad and crazy and melancholic music....man what a insanesation! I have no doubt in my mind that all of those who were born close to date, are going to buy this CD (if you already don't have all the albums up to date, and even if so...). This band makes a clear statement to an ERA. Along with INXS, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, U2,and Midnight Oil and many others. Not the bunch of crap that's coming out today: this is a MUST HAVE CD.
4-0 out of 5 stars The singles, volume 2.
The truth is, when "Galore" was released, it was pretty needed at the time. Their previous singles collection only ran through the "Head On The Door" album, and since then they put out four classic/good albums, two live albums, and a remix collection. Overall I think this does a good job, because these are the singles after all. The first half of this is excellent, taking from the "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" and "Disintegration" albums, and adding "Never Enough" from "Mixed Up". The second half is still good with the hits from "Wish", the better songs from "Wild Mood Swings", a mix of "Close To Me", and the new track "Wrong Number". In my perfect world, "Pictures Of You" would be the full version, and I'd easily swap the song "Apart" for any of the "WMS" tracks. Still a solid collection, even if it's not as classic as the "Staring At The Sea" disc. There's also the basic career-spanning "Greatest Hits" too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The hidden jewel in U2's repotoire
To the best of my knowledge, Zooropa was never intended to be a full album, but rather an EP that turned into a full album.Listening to U2's albums before and after, it's a pretty good guess as to why. This was U2 being U2, showing they can do whatever they want and doing so by creating an eclectic, infectious blend of electronics and a faint sound of rock n' roll.To futher confuse audiences, besides the lead track's ode/warning of commericial culture and a couple of love songs, the songs on this album are just plain weird - and that's what's so wondeful about it.
4-0 out of 5 stars 'Lost in Space':"Midnight Is Where the Day Begins"
U2's 'Zooropa' is a bit of a let-down after their magnificent 'Achtung Baby'.It is a brave, new effort that goes into more of a "space age" feel, adding to the technology of its predecessor. The subject matter is more bleak, not unlike a series of depressed creations by "Major Tom".It seems to look at the state of affairs, like usual; only this time Bosnia and technology seem to have staved off the party atmosphere of 'Achtung...'.Significantly, that one was done after the fall of the Berlin Wall.'Zooropa' soberly assesses the world after communism's collapse.

It's a simple concept--the first dozen singles by New Order collected, a couple of them rerecorded--but it's also a totally entertaining seven-year history of the band that married British post-punk alienation to the relentless hedonism of the dance floor. The band's hits were always deeply unconventional (like the haunting "Blue Monday," essentially a seven-minute drum machine test with a short lyric that alluded to the Falklands War), but they were brilliant productions, layering dozens of electronic countermelodies and percussion tricks over Barney Sumner's uncertain warble and Peter Hook's lead bass parts. Though they're audio snapshots of the dance beats of their time, they've held up both as club classics and as idiosyncratic rock songs. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Substance...what else?
I've listened to this more times than I've told my Dad that I love him. Maybe my priorities are wrong but this album is practically a family member. A genius overview of New Order's early and mid-career that they should have stuck to on later compilations. The songs here are classics. Some of the best dance music ever made, some of the best rock and roll ever made and some of the best pop ever made with some of the best song titles ever. All put togther with something so sadly lacking in today's ugly world..a little thing called..class.
1-0 out of 5 stars What's all the fuss...
Not terrible, but I don't get the hype.To me, it's just New Wave Disco-and Disco was bad in the 70's.Finally, what's this doing in a "Power Pop" category? No freaking way is this remotely Power Pop!What a disgrace to Power Pop lovers.

3-0 out of 5 stars (three and a half stars) truly a matter of taste
I'm a big New Order fan.But how can this be, you may ask, if I'm giving "Substance," the band's 1987 greatest hits album (with extra and alternative tracks) only three and a half stars? Here is where musical tastes become very subjective.Simply put, I'm not a huge fan of 80's British techno-pop, where technology (i.e. tinny sounding rhythm machines) took precedence over real instruments. That being said, I do believe that Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook are terrific musicians, whose talents were revealed in their less synthesizer driven tracks, and especially in the band's last three albums, namely "Republic," "Get Ready," and "Waiting for the Siren's Call," which are my three favorite N.O. albums by far.

5-0 out of 5 stars A down and dirty treat.
This really is down and dirty, grab em by the balls and don't let go, rock and roll. This is a fantastic album and the boys are getting their rightful rewards for producing it. If you haven't heard it yet, you're wrong, well partly - you must certainly have heard clips as so many are used on TV for trailers or articles within programmes. (Not to mention the various karaoke versions Phil Jupitus delivered on 'Never mind the buzzcocks'.) These Leeds boys really know how to rock and that songs have to start with terrific music, not scrag end stuff that can be fixed in the mix! Kaiser Chief will be massive. Get in now, so in years to come you can say you were there from the beginning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant in Leeds!
I like these guys, they have a good lite punk sound with slight underpinnings of the Clash and influences from other bands like Oasis and those following them. Which is very evident in the way they sing parts of "Saturday night" as well as parts in "Caroline, yes".

5-0 out of 5 stars Leaves me speechless
This is it. You've found it. Look no further. Because, my friends, music does not get any better than this. Every song, every lyric reaches down and soothes my darkest depths. I find myself at a loss of words because nothing can describe something so beautiful but the music itself. Give this cd patience. It's challenging but it grows, and it grows, and it grows. New Order does not even compare to the genious of Ian Curtis. Whatever possessed him to trancend all that seems humanly possible?

3-0 out of 5 stars (three and a half stars) influential
My general method for reviewing music on this web site has been to review all of the studio releases, chronologically, of my favorite artists. The band I'm now focusing on is New Order, but I have uncharacteristically reviewed their albums out of order (so to speak) because I didn't have their earlier cds.But I realized how much I liked New Order, so I recently purchased on-line, the early N.O. albums I was missing.I have owned "Substance" by Joy Division (as well as the album of the same name by N.O.) for some time, and I figured, what the heck, even though its not my cup of tea, I'll review it anyway, because, as every fan should be aware, Joy Division turned into New Order after the former's lead singer, Ian Curtis, committed suicide in 1980.
4-0 out of 5 stars A useful, deliberately assembled disc, but maybe not the place to begin.
I won't say a single word about the emotional weight of Joy Division's music or the impossible burden of Ian Curtis' words; other reviewers do that sort of thing far more justice than I could ever hope.Instead, I want to make some important points for those considering the purchase of Substance:

There's little in U2's 1980 debut to suggest that this was a band bent on world domination. Indeed, there's a charming, if naive, coming-of-age urgency in songs such as "I Will Follow," "Stories for Boys" and "Out of Control" that may startle listeners more familiar with U2's latter-day bombast and stadium-scale theatrics. Bono's viewpoint, still tantalizingly vague and wide-eyed, showed that his penchant for strident polemics hadn't yet gotten the best of him; his anthems are those of a yearning Dubliner barely out of his teens rather than those of a world-weary multimillionaire. The band's sometimes-ragged musical chops work in its favor here, gently burnished to then-fresh new-wave sheen by producer Steve Lillywhite. If the Edge's dense, effects-laden guitar work seems overly familiar, it's only because this album was such a key influence on the whole "rock of the '80s" sound.Though not quite as moody or musically accomplished as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a debut! Essential listening
The start of it all. OK so it doesn't sound like their more recent stuff but don't neglect it because of that. As a debut album they don't come much better than this. The sound is spartan and simple - but effective. The one thing about their first three albums was they were complete. Later albums I found to have "fillers" but there are none to be found here. The anthemic "I Will Follow" kicks off full of post-punk energy resplendant with Edge's choppy guitar style. There isn't a poor track to be found even the somewhat experimental "The Ocean" acting as an interlude fits well. I actually fail to understand how anyone who likes U2 couldn't consider this one of their classics. An essential addition to any U2 collection and certainly worthy of interest to any music fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars 'Boy' Breaks Ground on New Wave Turf
'Boy' is a beautiful, ground-breaking debut from one of the greatest rock bands ever.Immediately, they changed the landscape with their passionate and innovative guitar sound, given ably by the Edge.'Boy' does follow it's title's concept. The energy and innovation are remarkable, but there are a few portions of their first able effort that linger on too long.
5-0 out of 5 stars Their Best
Simply, their best.If you truly enjoy U2, this is it, before all the hype.If you want mainstream, buy something else. This is one of my most favorite albums ever. ... Read more

Editorial Review

General Public's debut is arguably the ska supergroup's best work. Fresh out of the English Beat, Dave Wakeling recruited vocal partner Ranking Roger, as well as bassist Horace Panter (the Specials), keyboardist Mickey Billingham (Dexy's Midnight Runners), and veteran sax man Saxa for this set of shiny pop that is virtually all as infectious as the album's Top 40 hit, "Tenderness." Sure, the English Beat's best grooves found their way into the Fine Young Cannibals, but Wakeling and Roger's breathless vocals and undeniable hooks still shine on this undervalued album. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ready for the reissue treatment
This is just a really awesome CD and I'm suprised it hasn't been given the re-issue treatment as of yet.All The Rage was released in late 1984 or early 1985.The US singles were "Tenderness" and "Never You Done That." The album itself contained a lot of different sounding songs.General Public toyed with reggae ala UB40 style on the song "General Public." I enjoy the whole album but really like songs like "Anxious," "Where's The Line," and "Are You Leading Me On?"There are some really great remixes to some of the songs on this album, I hope that it is given the reissue treatment soon.
3-0 out of 5 stars TENDERNESS
1984 Brit pop group dabbling in funk and ska yielded one great song; "Tenderness", a jingly piano-driven, bassoon enhanced, unabashedly sweet, catchy song that contains maybe the most representative line of '80s suppressed left wing agenda, - "I open my mouth and out pops something spiteful.", it rises above the hyperactive vocals and dull routine funk of the other songs, although the song, "General Public", adds Middle Eastern and progressive elements in a grandiose album closing. Band member, Ranking Roger (vocals, keyboards), has put out at least one fine Motown influenced solo album, and Clash guitarist Mick Jones, plays some rough guitar on some of the tracks. The band needs to lean more towards it's tender side than it's frantic funk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Catchy and enjoyable
Nothing spectacular here, just a thoroughly enjoyable pop/new wave/synth/whatever offering from an outfit that probably deserved more attention.Definitely worth getting. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Most Disappointing Album
I like Talking Heads.I have liked them since 1983, when Speaking in Tongues rocked my world.I have all of their records. I routinely defend David Byrne against the hipsters who despise his very existence.I have known and loved "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads" since I was in graduate school and played it on the tape loop in my volkswagen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Their best live set
When this was released on double LP twenty years ago, it offered an incredible overview of the Talkinh Heads live. Indeed it covers the early years up to the Remain in Light-era big band. Musically it is much more interesting that the Stop Making Sense soundtrack. The sound recording is maybe not as nice and Byrne's singing is not as polished. The playing is however much more strong. However the set represented is overall much stronger and it is also quite evident that the Remain In Light band was the best line-up simply. Songs such as The Great Curve are simly great and these versions are actually the definitive ones in my opinion. Rhino has again done a superb job by adding may songs to this beautiful CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intro to Talking Heads: 101
Long time Talking Heads fan here. I had this on tape years ago and finally bought the CD - without question the best Talking Heads recording available. If you're new to the Talking Heads, this CD should be your "Intro to Talking Heads: 101". Having seen them numerous times in the '70's when in college in Providence, this CD truly captures the live energy and emotion they were known for. ... Read more
