5-0 out of 5 stars Children of God
Children of God represented a progression in The Swans' sound. Some of the abrasiveness from their earlier albums is still here, but this album also leans towards the ethereal and abstract. At the time, Gira was obviously tired of The Swans being interpreted as a one dimensional act. Filth and Cop were abrasive and quite unfriendly records, albeit intellectual and beautiful in their own iconoclastic way. However, The Swans were always misunderstood. Filth and Cop made a strong impression on people. Even to this day these two records are infamous and, sadly, sometimes they overshadow the rest of the band's catalog. Gira even stated that clueless metal heads would show up at old Swans gigs to "rock out" and mosh to the music. He hated this kind of behavior and clearly saw The Swans as a more introspective band. The Swans were never intended to be party music, or music that everyone could easily enjoy. In reality, The Swans were a rejection of the corporate driven music industry. When they started attracting these elements, Gira realized that The Swans were becoming too easy to define and categorize. The art and the music was no longer challenging, it was becoming more commonplace and acceptable, even clich. He realized that he was falling into a category. And in order to remedy this fault, he had to push The Swans to evolve into something higher, something more sophisticated and multidimensional. Children of God was the first step in this direction. And for The Swans, it was also one of their finest, most definite moments.
5-0 out of 5 stars Out of this world
This 2-disc set combines Swans' 1987 masterpiece with various tracks from the first two albums (Shame, Humility, Revenge and Blood, Women, Roses) of their side project, The World Of Skin. The third album, Ten Songs For Another World, is not represented here.
5-0 out of 5 stars My first time hearing Swans
I remember reading an interview in a book on women in rock a several years ago I had bought in my college days. Swans' other half Jarboe was in the book. Since then I had been meaning to check out Swans' music but I just didn't know where to begin. The other day I was at my local library. I found a copy of "Children of God/World of Skin" so I thought this was the perfect time tto listen to their music. I immediately loved what I heard on both cds. I was easily reminded of some of my favorite darkwave bands like Black Tape For a Blue Girl, Lycia, and Clan of Xymox. The music is dark and dissonant. Michael Gira's dark, haunting vocals reminds me of both Sam Rosenthal (of Black Tape fame) and Voltaire (maybe a smidgeon). Jarboe has an equally stunning voice. I especially love it when she starts to wail like a banshee. There is a cold, empty, mechanical feel to the music but at the same time there is something comforting that I get from it that I can't put my finger on. Some of the music is melodic and some can be very experimental and very minimalistic. It's a nice antithesis to the commercial junk that radio plays into the ground. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've owned this album 4 times
I keep misplacing it... a friend borrows and doesn't return it maybe?Point is, I always REPLACE it.I bought the album when it came out and I think it is still resting someone in my folk's attic and I miss it!Everything about the album is right. The changes in the songs are what really get me.Second Skin evokes such a mood and makes me cry EVERY single time I hear it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most underated album of all time???
This could be it folks. The number one most underated album of all time!!! Every great thing that has been said about this album in the above reviews is true. If you're a fan of Joy Division, Interpol, Editors, Ride, Stone Roses, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, U2 etc. etc. you must do yourself a favor and buy this album. By the way the Chameleons released an album in 2000 or 2001???
5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE!!!
I'll be short and sweet...this debut album from The Chameleons is an absolute must have for any fan of The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, Joy Division, The Essence, et al.This band hails from the legendary Manchester area and is an influence of the myriads of 'retro' sounding artists of today like The Stills, At the Lake, The Bravery et al.The Chameleons never got the fame or recognition they rightly deserved because of a whole laundry list of bizarre circumstances; but I personally have been making converts one person at a time! This album has the signature jerky rhythm guitar coupled with a second eerie guitar flange wash that only The Chameleons could do!Of course you can't forget Mark's haunting vocals. My favourite track is the quintessential "Second Skin" that still takes me away after all these years!

Editorial Review

Talking Heads' 30th anniversary is commemorated in typically artful style here, sonically upgrading their eight, era-defining albums via bonus-packed Dual Discs and encasing them in a molded white plastic box intricately embossed with the band's song titles. Each disc contains complete album tracks and bonus cuts remastered in High Resolution Stereo on its CD side, while the DVD programming on the flip offers up the audio tracks in expansive new 5.1 Surround Sound mixes, with all of the sonic upgrading personally supervised by Heads drummer Jerry Harrison. Those long overdue audio improvements alone would make it an attractive set, but fans of the band will find its wealth of bonus music (various B-sides and previously unreleased outtakes) and video (including a number of rare live clips seeing their first release here) supplements equally intriguing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Packaging? meh. Music? yeah!
So Talking Heads fans will be wondering whether this is worth it if they already have most or all of the above-mentioned releases, and the answer is YES. This is true for all of the albums, but especially for Remain in Light and Naked, which really sound like new albums. Listening to either one of these records on the DVD-side surround mixes on solid speakers is a life-altering experience. (And furthermore, thanks to some tweaks and editing, in many ways the DVD sides really are different from the CD sides.) Even without surround, the remastered CD sides are an instantly noticeable improvement. The unreleased material and B-sides are generally excellent, and often provide insight into how the album, or its songs, were made or put together. The video extras, while few in number, are surprisingly good and aren't dated, grainy, or cheesy. Given how wretched music videos from the 70s and 80s tend to be, this is a testament to the artistic skill of the Heads.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Spot
Of course, the best way to hear this embarrassment of riches is to set up your system with the 5 speakers placed accordingly, set the levels for volume and distance, choose A.F.D. as your option to hear it as it was intended, then close your eyes and observe as the music swirls, plays games with you, peeks out and reveals structures you have never heard before. Have the synthesizers whoosh over your head to goose you in the backside, cavort back and forth in front of you, then high five the bass as it vibrates at your feet and beats at your heart, as the vocals (mixed down in many of the songs just enough to structure the music) lead you by your hyper-pleasured brain through the dark, funky and shifting landscape..

5-0 out of 5 stars No Wave Masterpiece... All Hail The Old School
Basically this album gave birth to the Art-Noise scene in NYC. Frankly, if you do not like this album you are ignorant. You do not get art or music-as-art.

4-0 out of 5 stars This isn't music; this is art.
I could see how lots of people would mistake this as a low-quality pre-grunge noise-fest which rarely contains any hints of typical song-structure and melodies, but that's because they think this is supposed to be a typical rock record. It is anything but.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Cool
Anyone who is into Sonic Youth should pick this up. I've been a fan for about a year and a half, but have quickly picked up alot of their albums. This is just so awesome. The epitome of Noise rock, in my opinion. It is very different, but i think true fans of Sonic Youth who haven't heard this yet will appreciate it. Songs like "(She's in a) Bad Mood", "Protect Me You", "Inhuman", "The World Looks Red", "Brother James", "Early American" and "Shaking Hell (Live)" are enough to buy this album. Every song is a trip..This is amazing for being made in the early 80's..

3-0 out of 5 stars Talking Heads at their best
This is not the Soundtrack. This is Talking Heads performing songs that were in the movie. I want Papa Legba by Pops Staples.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ill-conceived.
The Talking Heads, after producing a handful of essential albums, seemed to spend the tail end of their career fumbling a bit for direction, after the stripped back and ultimately unsatisfying "Little Creatures", they recorded a series of pieces David Byrne wrote for a movie called "True Stories" (that had already been recorded by different artists). The net result is an album that quite frankly sounds and feels nothing like a Talking Heads album and falls far short of delivering the goods.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Operator is my favorite pop song!
I had no idea that this was considered a bad album. This is my favorite Talking Heads album.I like all of the songs on it, but especially Dream Operator. It is extremely beautiful and it is my favorite pop song of all time.I have great memories of watching the movie with my dad as a child.I loved the movie so much that my dad gave me his soundtrack tape.Well, I have long since worn it out and am ready to buy it on CD! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Violent Femmes
All i can say about this album is that it really grows on you. It's the kind of music you want to hear when you want to dance by yourself in the living room.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's a shame these guys aren't huge...
...considering the quality of the music they have shared with the world throughout the last 21 years or so.5-0 out of 5 stars Exotically Formal Femmes
What a great album. Opens with the notorious "American Music", ends with the country inspired gem "I'm Free", and in between exhibits a vibrant variety of music, using elements of Pop, Folk, Country, Rock and Punk to generate a sort of "undressed new wave sound" that only the Violent Femmes could have the ingenuity to create. As with every Femmes album, "Why Do Birds Sing?" puts an interesting spin on the established Femmes sound. Keyboards and Organs play a previously nonresident role, and many instruments are introduced into the Femmes' musical vocabulary. Ukeleles, Conga Drums, Tambourines, Jaw Harps, Mellotrons, and drummer Victor Delorenzo's own invention, the "Tranceaphone" are among the interesting tools used to create the album. Though do not be fooled by the seemingly odd choice of instrumentation, the Violent Femmes are anything but some obscure emotionless act. Their unique sonances blend with accustomed Rock melodies to develop a very natural and pure sound, creating songs of exclusive charm.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Only glimmers of the greatness to come
This is, not, technically the band's debut: that came in the British release of THREE IMAGINARY BOYS (which has a slightly different track lineup). But for us Yanks, this is the album that introduced Robert Smith and company. The multi-layered wash of guitar and keyboard is nowhere in evidence on this one, though. [Think stripped back angular post-punk new wave rock.]
4-0 out of 5 stars Underrated Punk
This album is consistent from begining to end.Every track can be liked the first time you listen Boys Dont Cry.Most ardent punk fans inundate themselves with crashing wave of Sex Pistols, Ramones, New York Dolls, and possibly MC5.However, this album amalgamates raw punk with an ethereal quilaity thats present throughout the whole album.Get this album today.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS ACTUALLY 1000 STARS!
THE GUY WHO WROTE THE REVIEW ENTITLED "WHAT FUTURE LEGENDS ARE MADE OF..." IS SO RIGHT! THE CURE HAS RELEASED LIKE 13 ALBUMS BUT, BELIEVE ME, THIS IS THEIR BEST ONE! THE MUSIC IS QUITE PLAYFUL AND THEN IT COMES TO MORE SERIOUS MUSIC ("ANOTHER DAY," "THREE IMAGINERY BOYS") BUT I THINK THE PLAYFUL MUSIC IS THE BEST. I LOVE "FIRE IN CAIRO," "BOYS DON'T CRY," AND "SUBWAY SONG" (THAT ONE IS REALLY FUN IS A HALLOWEEN SORTA WAY), ALTHOUGH I WISH THAT THEY KEPT SELLING THE COPY WITH "WORLD WAR" ON IT. "WORLD WAR" IS EXCELLENT (I HEARD IT ON "THREE IMAGINERY BOYS (DELUXE EDITION).") THIS IS NOT ACTUALLY THEIR DEBUT, IT ACTUALLY COLLECTS THE LAST THREE SINGLES THAT THEY DID THAT WEREN'T INCLUDED ON 1979'S "THREE IMAGINERY BOYS," WHICH WERE "BOYS DON'T CRY," "JUMPING SOMEONE ELSE'S TRAIN," AND THE EXCELLENT SONG WITH AN UNPLEASANT TITLE BUT ITS ACTUALLY BASED ON THE NOVEL "THE STRANGER," "KILLING AN ARAB." THERE IS ALSO THE BEST SONGS FROM "THREE IMAGINERY BOYS," PLUS A REALLY COOL B-SIDE CALLED "PLASTIC PASSION" FROM THE "BOYS DON'T CRY" SINGLE. GET THIS NOW IF YOU'RE A FAN!!! I AM A 12-YEAR-OLD AND HAVE BEEN A FAN SINCE SEEING THEIR "END OF THE WORLD" MUSIC VIDEO. ANYWAYS, ENJOY THIS ALBUM. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lugubriously Brilliant
The deluxe version of Faith is so tenebrous you just might want to jump off a cliff after listening to it.Just kidding!
4-0 out of 5 stars Take Out the Out-takes
The Cure's 'Faith' has never sounded better with the arrival of this excellent remastered edition.Every song on disc one (the original album) is memorable, making it arguably the band's best of this era -- From the rapid rumble of 'Primary' to the more somber moments like 'All Cats Are Grey' and 'The Funeral Party'.
3-0 out of 5 stars Questioning the new "Faith"
Although heavy in topic the music of FAITH is marked with a sad beauty.Icy synth sounds feature heavily throughout and, combined with the machine-like pulse of Lol Tolhurst's drum kit, gives the music a fragile feel.Echo and reverb are treated on instruments and voices alike that linger over the music of FAITH like a heavy fog.

This is the CD single of Depeche Mode's biggest hit.Great song, with six remixes. Some of the remixes are more interesting than others, with the versions without most of the lyrics being least enthralling. The other tracks here are "Sibeling" and "Mempisto", which are piano instrumentals that sound like horror movie themes. They are decent, but nothing great, really.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boycott Victory Records (Not a kid's review by the way!)
Okay first off, Our Gang's Dark Oath was an amazing album I loved it, I still do. Then they moved to Victory Records and I, knowing that all of Victory's bands sound the same, was very skeptical as to what the change in the label would mean for this band. Nonetheless, I bought Nightmare Anatomy and me being skeptical was washed away when I heard Knife Blood Nightmare. I thought to myself, Aiden is back! All of those feelings of thinking Aiden is still making great music were soon washed away when I heard Die Romantic. This was probably the most generic emo songs I had ever heard. While I will admit, it was catchy, I was disgusted by the fact that Aiden had written it. From that moment of the CD on, my feelings did not change, every single song goes into this poppy attempt at having a catchy chorus and not only does it sound cheesy, it shows the band was quite simply running out of ideas. I was offended by the fact that this band had put this CD out. Did they think that their fans are a bunch of idiots and not realize that this is a sad attempt at becoming popular? Anyone who tries to correct me should listen to this: the big craze right now in music is emo. Aiden, a band that WAS NOT emo before they signed to Victory Records BECAME emo. A band that was not emo before becomes emo when the genre is popular. Hmmmmmm sellouts? Ummm yeah! The funny thing is Victory promotes this, which is why I say boycott Victory before they take yet another once-great band and turn them into every other band that is on their label. If not, you guys can watch your favorite band turn into My Chemical Romance Version 4572364578.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good!!!!!!!!!
I bought this cd after hearing the song die romantic this band is a little genric but it is good!

5-0 out of 5 stars The pointless ramblings of my mind on modern music
I recentley saw the Aiden and HIM concert in Chicago.I had loved the band HIM for two years and just couldn't wait.Althought my teenage heart did beat for Ville Valo, Aiden stole the show. The music cranked and the band had thousands of people cramming in so close together, all sweating buckets, but happy doing so.I had heard the singles "Die Romantic" and "The Last Sunrise", but they weren't my favorites on the cd.I personally liked "Goodbye Were Falling Fast" and can't wait to see a video for it.All the same, Aiden seems to have jumped on the "slit your wrists and die in the arms of your lover" bandwagon, and I enjoy every moment of it.The screaming and screaching with beautifully dark lyrics puts me to bed every night.I am also very glad I met the band before listening to the cd.I got to talk to wiL for a couple of minutes, honestley the nicest man I have EVER met, and he talked to me about the album and life in general.ALl of those lyrics are written form their hearts, they pour their souls into their work and give so much for their fans. I would have a hard time giving this cd anything other than a five. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Strange Musical Journey
There are few musicians on the modern scene as vital, as ingenious, and as off-the-wall creative as is Barry Adamson. Its really a pity he's not better known in North America. I've been following his musical odyssey for quite a while now, and with the issue of Stranger On The Sofa its plain that Adamson is not running out of ideas. One spin in the CD changer and you will find yourself on yet another strange musical journey through the world of Barry Adamson.

5-0 out of 5 stars underrated gem
one of the best records of the eighties by one of the best groups of the eighties .The only reason it's not more appreciated is the same group made two even better records....ocean rain and heaven up here

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT RE-MASTERED PACKAGE
Solid debut album. My favorite Echo album period. Sometimes when an album is re-released and extra tracks are added it can take away from the original feeling/experience. Not the case here! The bonus tracks fit wonderfully with the album. A great archive of the early raw Echo sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Debut With Bite
The early 1980's scene in Liverpool was filled with fertile young bands that were gigging in a new wave of psychedelic sounds, and among them were the three piece Echo and The Bunnymen. Along with Psychedelic Furs, Teardrop Explodes and a handful of other bands from this period, they were overflowing with youthful energy and exuberance. Once an interested record exec told them they'd have a deal if they hired on a drummer, the band and contract were in place.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Magazine Album Necessary
This album is filled with top notch songwriting."Song From Under The Floorboards" is a classic and keeps drawing me back to listen to the rest, which is pretty darn good. The other Magazine albums do nothing for me.Not even a stand out song.Get Soap and that is all you need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just buy it...
Sure, Magazine has definitely made better records than "The Correct Use of Soap" but "Song from Under the Floorboards" is one of the catchiest songs I've ever heard. It's seriously been stuck in my head CONSTANTLY for years. It's always in my mind and no matter where I go or what I do I'm always singing or humming it.I don't know what it is about the song, just one of those things that gets caught in your brain and nothing can possibly remove it. And oh yea, the rest of thesongs are great too.I highly recommend this album, infinite replay value.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums
When this album came out in 1980 I listened to it for months. It didn't sound like any record out at the time. It was literary. It went beyond the limitations of punk. Does any good punk record have keyboards on it? "Because You're Frightened" sounds like a encapsulation of the first two records. "Model Worker" is a hyper ballad for real. It is a commentary on America and the work ethic. "I'm A Party" sounds a lot like the fourth record. I didn't relally care for that one. This is Magazine's last great recording. "Philadelphia" is modern funk at breakneck speed. It's not really sure what this song is about. There are many references to America in general on this whole album. Maybe they were getting into Philly Soul and Sly Stone at this point? "I Want To Burn Again" sounds like Bowie. John McGeogh's guitar on this song (and others) is amazing and often copied. McGeogh left the band after this record and joined Siouzsie and The Banshees and PIL. "Sweetheart Contract" is a great song. It's one of those non-singles that is tucked into an album. This album has no filler. It's starts off great and end brilliantly with "A Song From Under The Floorboards." This is a song that takes its inspiration from Doestoevsky. His book "Notes From The Underground" should be checked out. This is a song that is written from the point of the view of its protagonist. This song is world weary. It is nihilistic. "I know the meaning of life, it doesn't help me a bit..." is a great line and sums up everything that Magazine was about. If Magazine would have stopped here, they would have probably been regarded in the same light as Sex Pistols, Ramones, and Wire. But they went on and did another uninspired album (without McGeogh) and messed it up. I haven't heard this record for years. Then when I was in New York City, it was all anyone was playing in clubs. It had been rediscovered by a new generation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect, simple, familiar.
This soundtrack is awesome, I only knew about two artists featured on it. Yet when I listened to it, every song felt familiar. It's nostolgic, comforting, awesome.
5-0 out of 5 stars Um...Awesome.
Let me say that style is like alcohol. When it comes to direction, Noah Baumbach is sober and Wes Anderson is a wino, but aren't my friends Sane and Crazy fun all the time? Baumbach sat in the corner and played chess at the party, but the world forgot him because he didn't jump up on the table, paint it carnation pink and then break it down. Scrappin' and yellin'. But, seriously, The Squid and the Whale and its soundtrack is just as good as The Royal Tenenbaums, even without trippin' in Photoshop. And that's saying something!I think you should get this if you like cute folk songs and you feel sort of sad when you think about when you were a kid. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Rediculous
Saw them live and I almost peed my pants I was laughing so hard at how pathetic they were. Someone needs to tell them that disco died in 1978.

5-0 out of 5 stars Men Women & Children are the reason I am on the dancefloor
This CD is one of the best out there.I bought it the minute I got out of the mosh pit when they opened for motion city soundtrack and I was listening to it that night when I got home. They know how to rock, they know how to make the stage their own, and their songs are to die for. They are who they are and I wouldn't change them for all the world.Get this album and see why I want their next album already!

5-0 out of 5 stars Disco Fever
This album is amazingly fresh, and will be on repeat in my CD player for months to come.I'd like to lounge around in my leisure suit while listening this album, but the minute I sit down to lounge, I have to get up and bust a move.Start to finish this is an amazing album.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest song ever written
It's 15 years after I first heard this, and I have yet to hear a song that I ever thought might challenge this for 'best song ever.'One is a towering achievement by a band at the absolute height of its powers. The best song on my all-time favorite CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why are you wasting your time?
Am I the only one that thinks writing a review for a single is a big waste of time? I mean, if you bought the single it's becuase you like the song. No one ever buys a single because they think "I wonder what this band is all about. I think I will buy their single and find out." No way, It doesn't happen that way. Maybe for a whole album but not a single. You buy a single because you are afraid to gamble on the whole album yet you like that one song (no pun intended) or you are a fanatic of the band and must consume every product that they produce. Either way you are gonna give the single a positive review.
5-0 out of 5 stars get the meaning right people!
Im a bit concerned that reviewers on here are still calling this song one of U2's best "Love" songs....this is not a love song.First, it was the song that kept the band together at a time that their fights were driving them apart - so the words can relate to that.Secondly - it was a political song about the fall of the Berlin wall and EAst and West germans having to "come together" and become "one".thirdly, one of the three videos for this song has buffalo going off a cliff - this is a connection to AIDS - with the artist of this having died from it - and there is a myth that the song is a conversation between a gay son and his father (the father in the video actually played by bono's father).(this version was for the AIDS charity)
