5-0 out of 5 stars "Like blinding pouring light..."
Wolf Eyes, yet again, have made one of the most drug-induced seizures of a album ever recorded with their 2nd album for Sub Pop, Human Animal. With the addition of Mike Connelly of Hair Police, the band has increased the sonic torture and hellish noise of their previous work and turned it up 10 notches. Screeching high frequencies, echoed syntheziser, screamed buried vocals, and avant-garde saxaphone...the norm for these guys.
4-0 out of 5 stars Big bad wolf
Since their last album for Sub Pop, Wolf Eyes have released something like a dozen albums (!), and that's not counting their collaboration with avant-jazz pioneer Anthony Braxton.Of course, these things were released on either tiny micro-labels or plain old CD-Rs, and finding them might be difficult even on the web.Of course, many of us weren't really looking anyway. In any event, the Wolf-men are back (semi) overground with album number two for Sub Pop.Call it an "official" release if you must, but the main question casual fans might ask is how the band has progressed in the last two years and dozen obscure releases. The answer to that is "not much" or "are you kidding?"The new album basically treads the same stylistic ground, which is basically noise, and lots of it.Usually this involves synths and other digital equipment being abused so thoroughly it sounds more effed-up than the contents of Mel Gibson's skull after a weeklong booze binge.Of course, rather than ranting about Jews killing Jesus or Buddha or Elvis, Wolf Eyes are more interested in things like "Rationed Rot" or "Lake of Roaches" (actual song titles!).The few tracks that have any vocals at all are unintelligable, said vocalist sounding like Skinny Puppy's Ogre being given a tonsilectomy with a blowtorch.Actually, about half the album doesn't even bother with any type of rhythm, instead oozing and flowing like a river of New Jersey toxic sludge being funneled through your ear canals.Still, you want progression?Okay, a couple of tracks feature some wounded elephant saxophone.Think that'll win 'em a Grammy? ... Editorial Review

A must-buy for any teen or twentysomething who considers themselves the least bit cool. With Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore swopping leads, it's a beautifully paced disc exploding with beatific beats, white-noise assaults and great, grungy pop ("Sugar Kane," "Chapel Hill"). --Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I Don't Get It
Clearly I'm far too closed minded for this album. If I wanted to listen to people screaming and crashing and banging completely out of sync I'd open my window at 5am while the neighbors are screaming at each other again and the early-bird construction crew is cutting concrete outside my apartment while the garbage truck is slamming the dumpster onto the pavement repeatedly.Absolutely no musicality, no message, NO TALENT.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dirty sounds, but dirty is nice isn't it...
"Dirty" was Sonic Youth's most commercial album. I am not sure if this was done on purpose, but it makes 'Dirty' SY's most open album. Open for the lovers of alternative/progressive rock with an almost jazzlike way of listening to music.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not as Dirty as it sounds
A very good sonic youth effort, I must say. Admittedly, there are a lot of songs on here I actually just don't listen to for one reason or another. But the songs I do listen to make up for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, top to bottom
This was the first Sonic Youth album I listened to, so for a long time I figured my opinion on it didn't count.Had to bow to the opinions of those long time fans, you know, who didn't seem to care for this one.I've since heard several other SY albums over the years, and I always gave them a great chance -- because, damn, this is the group that made Experimental Jet Set, etc.And I think I'm ready to commit now -- this album was their best, at least of the ones I know.It was one of the greatest albums of the 90's.There isn't a bad song on it, and the best ones are, well, transcendent.I can't rate this album any higher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their best?
Sonic Youth was always good, this may be their best, and one of 4 great 90's albums, along with "CIA Drug Fest" by Old Skull, "Undisputed Attitude" by Slayer, and "We Are They Who Ache With Amorous Love" by Half Japanese. "Winners Blues" is acoustic, a crazy move for these noisemakers, and then we get what we really came for, noisy improv-ish songs that are fantastic, exciting, and occasionally intelligible! Some of the early SY stuff is a little overrated, but this, "EVOL","Goo", and "Confusion is Sex" are sure to please fans of noisy music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sexy
it's amazing how everytime SY can make an album that is completely different than the previous one. Again so now, after the 'commercial' -Dirty- (which was an awesome record) comes this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gave up, but this renews my faith in good music!
I wasn't a huge fan of Murray Street, but this album blows me away. After Murray Street, I thought maybe they had lost their touch and weren't going to retire with a kick. Well I was proven wrong.I was really surprised that they came out with this, I had kind of given up on them since they came out with Murray Street (Sorry Murray Street fans), and then I just looked them up for old times sake, and whadya know - an awesome album. This is as good as it gets as far as good music is concerned.I can't wait for their new album to come out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth Progressing
Another album, experimental as always, but at the same time it is listenable.....The melodies are obscure, consisting ofharmonics, and sound manipulation with the effects.deep bass ..the drums are used in complex time signatures, making it stand out and has a new approach making it different than the other albums......chaotic noize and complex melodies... the sound goes on........

5-0 out of 5 stars A tribute to the electric guitar
I liked 2000's "MURRAY STREET" a lot, and was interested to see what direction they would take this one in. I wasn't sure I would like it. I was not disappointed though, and now i think of the two albums as companion pieces, not sure which i like more, though certainly this is a more lengthy, and probably developed record.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunningly simple, simply stunning
Ben Shepard has a sound and a cadence that is rarely heard and very underappreciated. The songs he wrote that are on Soundgarden's albums were the most bizarre and, a decade after the end of Soundgarden, still among my absolute favorites that they recorded. It was after he joined that I really began to dig their sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars ben shepherd is back (finally)
well, it took ten years for this album to surface, but hater is back and ben shepherd finally returns to the scene from whichever rock he was hiding under.gaining a certain amount of fame and creative respect through his bass work with soundgarden, ben shepherd is the crazy genius/hermit that is just not heard from enough.Hater is a worthy vehicle for shepherd to make his return with, and this album is more focused and far better sounding than their first record (which i still cannot believe was released by a major label).their first wasn't exactly a masterpiece, it was a spontaneous and quirky collection of bizarre pop songs, but it did have it's own classicness that still stands up today and "the 2nd" extends the mood even further.the tunes on the new one are more thought out, better executed, and beautifully recorded and mixed.ben shepherd's vision of a pop song never ceases to amaze me, it's so left of center it's hilarious... and when his voice hits an off note, it's not by accident... it sounds just the way he wants it.i was sad to see that ben's INCREDIBLE bass skills were absent from the record (he covers all vocal and guitar duties), but alan davis is more than capable in laying down a groove with legendary drummer matt cameron andthere is a definete layer of skill backing the simplicity of the songs.shepherd at times sounds like beggar's banquet-era mick jagger reincarnated as a 1977 snot-nosed punk, and once you crack into this record, shepherd's "so-bad-it's-great" lyrics sound f**king fantastic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Phenominal
I was very excited to see that a new HATER album was released.Since the fisrt and only previous album was released back in 1994, I thought that the side project from the Soundgarden members had become permanetly defunct.Anyone that enjoyed the first HATER album will also love this second album.I highly reccomend it, this is an excellent album. Any fan of the Seattle music scene and especially Soundgarden, this HATER album along with the first one - are must haves for the collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars He's just a kitten...
Another masterpiece in the Sonic Youth catalouge. Here the band keeps their avant style leaving behind the pop stylings of Dirty and Goo, and continue with 'Washing Machine' songs. As an SY fan knows though every album is much different than any other, so this of course has it's own unique.
2-0 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth loses their way
I remember when this album came out. I had been a huge Sonic Youth fan for years and I ran to Mod Lang in Berkeley to buy it the day it was released. I brought it home, put it on, and desperately tried to like it. But I just couldn't. SY had always had a penchant for strectching out their feedback experiments into sprawling, fasinating compositions, but here it all just seemed to melt down into a pointless noise crusade. There are a few high points, but mostly I just find myself thinking, "there is no way this song deserves to be nine minutes long." The slide continued on the next record, but fortunately they got it together again on "Murry Street" and have been putting out great stuff ever since.

5-0 out of 5 stars The music sounds just like the color of the album cover.
It took me a little while to really get into this, but once I did I just couldnt take this masterpiece out of my cd player. All the songs have like a little weird twist to them, like dejavu notes or melodies you swear you have heard before in your mind. Kim Gordon's singing is pretty good too, at first it might seem like she's just screaming whatever she thinks of but keep listening and it will be very rewarding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Old Tatari for 100% Pure-Ear
Eveyone I know hates this album.Who can blame them? Some Japanese kids with _SEVERE_ ADD running around inside a studio doing pisstakes left, right & centre.I mean, these friends... some of them appreciate Fantomas, Mr. Bungle and other strange bands, but the Boredoms just crush them.Sure, Fantomas may not ever be able to play a riff for more than 10 seconds at once, the Melvins may drone on the same note for 6+ minutes, but THIS?!?!?Again, who can blame one for feeling that way?
4-0 out of 5 stars Pervert your senses with Pop Tatari
Pop Tatari was the first Boredoms music i had ever been exposed to.my initial reaction was... "what the hell is going on here?" and thankfully, my reaction has not changed years later. this album still holds the unrestrained crazed sounds of pure insanity. but in a really fun and goofy way. the songs are sharp and full of ridiculous noisy musical ideas. and they are all pieced together with random outbursts of non -sensical conversations between the band members; which could only be described as "B*O*R*E*speak. most of those dialogue segments (although completely unintelligable) are hilarious. Pop Tatari stands out as a classic moment in Boredoms history where all the elements that make them so wild and crazy have a particular staying power in the way thatthe complete package is presented. it's not to say that these songs are poppy or catchy...quite the opposite (i'm not even sure that these tracks could even be considered "songs"); but there is a certain magnetism that draws the unsuspecting listener into this messy outlandish masterpiece and holds them down until their senses are thoroughly [...].

5-0 out of 5 stars Cure for Boredom
Contrary to the name, the Boredoms are never boring.Their sound is fresh and even shocking. It is hard to find origional sounds these days, and the Boredoms are one of the best bands that has their own sound.Generally the average person does not like the boredoms, but if you dont mind music that tends to be largely random with moments of brilliance, all being held together by percussion, then buy this or any boredoms CD.There is not much else to say about them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You are slowly dying...
...and this is all you can hear.
5-0 out of 5 stars to each their own...
To simply say "oh this is just noise, no notes, no real structure" as a complaint...just shows how narrow your world is, and "this is bad noise" is more a compliment than a complaint as the members would see, i would bet. I have heard enough to know that this is a fairly easy to digest recording. And don't think this is DaDa or some form of idustrial sound, it simply is not. John has spent years destroying sound to static on American Tapes/Heavy Tapes to make Wolf Eyes an almost pop band by their own standards. This is sound and "music" atleast by track disection, and yes, their are folks that can and do enjoy the sounds made here. It is a sound and a mood, a moment, and just plain chance...and this is what I appreciate. Sound is usually 2 things...the bands that rehash the same crap with a different name, or people who actually test and try themselves to see what new thing they can find. If you don't care for what Wolf Eyes has found here, thats fine but atleast respect the fact that these guys are trying to find a unique moment. Embrace the challenge and maybe you'll come away from it a bigger person?from day light savings... and a fairview. I will continue to enjoy...just be sure to drop that additude bud, rock on.

5-0 out of 5 stars What is Dada?
According to its proponents, Dada was not art -- it was "anti-art". For everything that art stood for, Dada was to represent the opposite. Where art was concerned with aesthetics, Dada ignored aesthetics. If art were to have at least an implicit or latent message, Dada strove to have no meaning -- interpretation of Dada is dependent entirely on the viewer. If art is to appeal to sensibilities, Dada is to offend. It is perhaps then ironic that Dada became an influential movement in modern art. Dada became a commentary on order and the carnage they believed it reaped. Through this rejection of traditional culture and aesthetics they hoped to destroy traditional culture and aesthetics.

While I really like the Boredoms and thhink this is a very good record, I am not sure I would be as ecstatic as some of the other rewievers have been. It is of course original as we expect. It is however very very diffrent from what we would expect since the influences have quite changed with time. Proceed with caution.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S ALIVE, IT'S ALIVE!!
Play tracks four through eight sufficiently loud while sitting in the middle of the stereo field and you'll get the picture.Yes, indeed, crappy drum sounds, but that's part of the appeal, in total contravention to present "standard practice".Not a bit of cleanliness and order here. That Damon Edge couldn't sing did not stop the bunch of them from recording one of the most singular meldings of acid-damaged psychedelia and dissonant electronics/tape weirdness available for your listening pleasure.Utterly primitive and demented, they threw in at least two kitchen sinks in the making and doubtless killed a lot of brain cells (maybe that's why their other stuff is so spotty?).That said, smack in the middle of second release included on this disk is "Nova Feedback", probably one of the "prettiest" pieces they ever did and one which is most firmly "music" by any measure.

5-0 out of 5 stars The process of ignition...
After the irritating pestilence of 'The Visitation', Chrome should have disappeared into little more than a record collector's footnote for those bitchin' hand stencilled covers.Instead, they found Helios Creed fighting over the same pile of discarded electronic garbage in the Tenderloin.Using every quarter they could bum from in front of the Mitchell Brothers theatre to power a slick and polished visual campaign based on Xerox copiers, they proceeded to record these jaw-dropping aural spectacles.Lacking fans, a public stage, academic credentials or any strategic engagement with the music business, the band transmogrified from the gypsy moth which eats a leaf or two into a city raping Mothra. At the time, absolutely nothing sounded like it and the globally scattered 200 (maybe) who understood what they were hearing recognized what a rupture it was. While strictly adhering to the accepted conventions of rock, the guitar-solo on 'Nova Feedback' can make you weep, there is zero sense that the sound was connected to, came from or was going towards another musical dialectic. It would be years before people comprehended the music and sufficient resources were devoted to even understanding who the characters were.Unfortunately, time has been cruel to the source recordings and all reproductions have suffered noticeable and differing degradations in sonic quality.Purchase of the vinyl originals, themselves poorly made, is required.Critical to understanding music recorded after 1985.

3-0 out of 5 stars I tried...
I bought Chrome's "Half Machine Lip Moves / Alien Soundtracks" at the record store clerk's insistence that it was the greatest album ever. I feel like I really SHOULD like it, as I love Suicide, Pere Ubu, The Wipers, Shellac/Big Black and many of the other bands that are referenced. I love musique concrete, backwards tape loops, etc. I do like the concept, but I am not sold on the execution at all.

Editorial Review

The Boredoms are a notorious Japanese rock group with an over-the-top, in-your-face artistic approach that is both ferocious and awe-inspiring. On its 10th full-length album, the Osaka-based ensemble exudes a sonic collage of trance-inducing drones, power-chord riffs, and enthusiastic jamming. While hyperkinetic frontman Yamatska Eye leads the Boredoms through seven extremely long compositions, this disc is rarely boring. On the opening song, "Super You," they embrace traditional rock structures with galloping drums and reverberating guitars that eventually melt into tribal-like chants and surreal studio effects. By combining their high-energy approach with sophisticated recording techniques, the Boredoms create a psychedelic milieu that celebrates unorthodox musicianship, instrumental excess, and raw energy. This is aggressive, contemporary rock music without the pretentious trappings of heavy metal or punk. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Super weird
If a group of peyote-addled Meso-American demigods were to try to record a tribute to Can, it would probably end up sounding somewhat similar to Super Ae.Where Boredoms' previous Chocolate Synthesizer was an aural stimulant, restlessly hopping from one genre to another in barely controlled bursts of noise, this album is more like a hallucinogen, gradually enveloping the listener in its hazy, trippy layers of sound. This is avant-garde rock that doesn't hold back on the rock, combining its fearsome heaviness with bizarre song structures in a way that practically makes Mr. Bungle sound commercial.True, most of the songs have a classic guitar and drum backing, but it's what the band members do with those instruments, as well as their penchant for spacey electronic effects and harsh use of tape loops, that elevates Super AE above mundane genre classifications.
4-0 out of 5 stars brain expanding...ears bleeding...
it is strange how one song can be outstanding during one listen, yet horrible the next listen.

Musically, I'd give it a 1. But if the review is purpose driven, I'd give it a 5. Only this, Metal Machine Music, and Diamanda Gals are sure fire get the people out of you rhouse right freaking now CDs

1-0 out of 5 stars Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9...
Sorry Neil, I'm a big fan of yours but this simply doesn't cut it. A half-hour of pure feedback, huh? Looks like someone's been listening to a bit too much of John Lennon's "Unfinished Music". Avoid, go after a Neil Young album that's actually music. I recommend Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush and Rust Never Sleeps.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like your Neil Young rough, and tough.
I had misgivings after reading the reviews on ARC about buying this one.I am very happy with this, having listened to it once, before writing this and now again as we go. This album is truely everything the previous reviewers say good and bad. I can sympathize and see where someone is coming from who doesn't like this. If you do not think this is a good album you will probably think it is complete junk. If you prefer Neil's softer music, the stuff, say without Crazy Horse, don't bother with this. If your looking to hear some meaningful lyrics try something else. If you like your Neil, rougher the better, than give this a go.Even then you will not know whether you like it until you hear it, and these reviews, negative or positive, can not give this justice.Neil always trys to take a different approach or comes up with a completely new one, from things he has done in the past, sometimes that means taking things to the limit and maybe beyond.Neils tendency to play the opus, love of distortion, his focus here on feedback and ability to take things all the way to the limit and the hell what anyone thinks, are all fused together in ARC, grinding through here, maybe in its ultimate form. We should all know by the name ARC and the albums relation to the Weld album, but seperate release that even Neil new this was a different animal, and not for everyone. The title envisions metal, grime, industry, rawness and extreme energy and that is what you'll get here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just one complaint.
This is just about all the Chrome you'll need if you're a first time listener, plus it's a great alternative than trying to track down the individual albums on CD, nearly all of which are out of print, however, as many of the other reviews have stated, there is a lot missing. True, I can live without many of the instrumental songs that got the boot, but the missing five studio tracks from "Blood on the Moon" are sorely missed.
5-0 out of 5 stars All the best of Chrome
I've owned this for years now and still play it all the time.Chrome were one of those kinds of bands that covered a great deal of stylistic territory; Rock, Psych, early Industrial, Experimental, Gothiness; and managed to mesh it all seemlesly together into one shuddering, bloody mess that still sounds fresh and interesting 25 years later.Alien Soundtracks and Half MAchine Lip Moves are classics.Personally my favorites are the material from disc 2 albums like Red Exposure and Blood on the Moon. But actually its all good. And dont beleive the guy who says there is a lot missing, there really isn't.Only a few tracks were left out (for reasons of disc space i would presume). All in all this is one of my favorite bands of all time and I would recomend that anyone interested in any sort of artsy obscure rock track it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful re-issue, superior sound
From an international perspective, Chrome remains one of the most important and seminal West coast band of the late 1970s / early 1980s. This box contains everything you need to know about the band, and almost all their tracks.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another reason why Haino's the greatest musician on earth
It takes a while for this one to get started, with about fifteen minutes of hellish white noise to scare away the weak stomached. But then comes the soft part, and it's one of the most beautiful things I've heard Keiji record. "Nihilism" is not Keiji Haino's best by any means, but it's yet another strong album in his vast discography and is far more brutal, intense and beautiful than anything else released in the 1990s. Sick of your musicians sounding the same as bands from 40 years ago? Give Keiji Haino a spin and hear why I think he's the most important musician walking the planet right now- his music is alien, haunting and compelling, going places even post-rock and noise rock are scared to go. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I've been a Ruins fan for almost 10 years now....
...and whenever someone who has never heard the band before asks for a recommendation, I direct them to this album.Honestly, all their albums are worthy of your time and perusal, but this one still stands out for me.
4-0 out of 5 stars Alien Prog Spazzrock
A quick overview,Ruins is a long running project by founder/drummer/vocalist Tatsuya Yoshida. It has always been just two people(although there have been several different bassists over the years)doing vocals, drums, and bass guitar.Ruins are most often compared to prog rock groups like Magma(a big influence acknowledged by Yoshida)and others from the 1970's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Hold it at Arm's Length
Before I start, if you are not a little bit familiar with Merzbow, I can only wonder how you got here. Nevertheless, the genre he represents is "noise" but it's not noise of a minimalist sort (usually) and not noise of a banging on the trash-cans sort (usually). If you started somewhere in the vicinity of white noise, plus sheer pulsing, you might have an inkling.Wide frequency ranges, throbbing squelches, subharmonic oscillations, feedback, distortion as thick as gauze stuffed into a fatal puncture wound, frequently long and relentless, but not unvarying tracks. Make no mistake, this is the opposite of minimalist--it is saturation, maximalist. Relentless.
