4-0 out of 5 stars if only they'd focused more on 12" singles versions...
with over 15 volumes in the "Just Can't Get Enough" series, this is the only volume that ever touched upon some 12" dance singles, not just 7" dance singles. You get a good amount here, but there are still some single mixes. And the version of Lawnchairs on here is the "original" and not the version most are familiar with--that version is actually much better. However, this volume is worth getting for the 12" version of Dominatrix on CD alone! Track times:
4-0 out of 5 stars Commercial New Wave, This Is Not! (That's a Very Good Thing)
For fans of New Wave music who idealize New Wave as being a cookie-cutter lineup of the Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran (perhaps like the last reviewer), this is not your CD! That's the good news, because New Wave music is/was so much more than the Top 40 New Wave you currently hear in the increasing retro/flashback radio waves. Kudos to a compilation that explores some of the obscurity that true New Wave music originated from, the underground.

2-0 out of 5 stars You Wanna Punish Yo'self?
The 60s were amazing: Elvis, Surf Music, Folk, The Beatles & the British Beat Boom, American Garage Rock, Psychedlia, Morrison, Joplin, Hendrix, The Who, etc. The 70s were not so good but not so bad either. Glitter was a joke but Punk had it's moments as did progressive rock. The 80s on the other hand were BLAND. The 90s, a complete loss, and the new millenium is not even worth talking about. Therefore ANY compilations of POP drivel from the 70s on are TOTALLY USELESS. If you want GOOD music, it has always been made but look for it in the jazz, blues, country, Tex Mex and classical fields. This does NOT include pretenders like Michael Bubble. Buy this cd only if you need to punish yourself for some misdemeanor. It's an assault on your eardrums and an insult to your good taste.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
This is a good collection of 1980s music at its best but they made a track mistake Paula Abdul doesn't sing "Oh Sheila" she just sings "Straight Up" but oh well. This is a good collection a must buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly the best representation of 80's new wave
I bought this CD( s ) a few years ago at a discount store for about $6.00, mainly because I absolutely loved Talk Talk's " It's my life" and saw this as a very cheap alternative to buying an actual Talk Talk album for that one song( which was a mistake because every song on the "It's my life" full length album is worth it's weight in gold; now that I own it and have realised what I was missing out on ).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Choose It for the Songs You Recognize
I own several CDs in this series and this one, unfortunately is the one that comes off the shelf the least. Even since loading the contents up MP3 style into my computer and iPod only a few get played. Only a select few truly sound like the alternative radio I grew up with in the 80s.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful

4-0 out of 5 stars wow, out of print, going for big bucks!!
I had this vol. since i bought in fall of 1994, Had no idea its the only vol in the series thats out of print due to rights issues. I seen this thing going for $149.00 Wow. ok as far as the music on the disc, let me just say there are odd choices for this vol. Ok i grew up in philly listening to 98 WCAU -FM in 1982 when i was like 10 yrs old, and the only song i reconize on this vol from those days is pass the ducthie , which seems like amisplaced from this new wave song selction but it works however, but i never heard of alot of these songs. Some i got to know around 1993 listening a station called DRE that played classic new wave durning the 80's lunch hour. Like i know the valley girl josie cotton song from the movie being a big fan, and the DA DA DA DA song i never heard of, The other i came to know was haircut 100 song which seems to be an alternative version then what iam use too. O superman is an strange errie song i never heard of. and its werid its the full 8 minute version but rhino will chop a few seconds from other songs in their series, The paul carrack song is good but not new wave sounding enough. There is some ska stuff on here that kinda blows. And i never heard of X until i got vol. 6 . so i might have appreciated these songs on this vol alot more if i grew up in LA around 81 82. but i am not getting rid of it for the vaule collectors item feel to it now..

3-0 out of 5 stars Should you pay big bucks to complete your collection?
Uh, no.I found it somewhat nauseating when I found that the only disc that I still needed to have the entire Rhino NWHOT80's collection was an OOP rarity, but my mood elevated when I got a look at the song lineup.Would someone out there actually pay in the area of $50 for the privelege of owning such a below average lineup of songs?A friend recorded this disc from a library copy that he located and I can honestly say that NOTHING on the sought after disc 7 is even close to being worthy of the big asking price.Check your local library and judge for yourself, then treat yourself to the other volumes and call your collection complete.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Rhino Records
Of the four or so of Rhino's "New Wave Hits" discs that I'vebought so far, this one is probably my favorite (vol. 2 is a very closesecond). The entire series has a wonderful variety of new wave music, andat a good price.Yeah, its got that "da da da" song that's inthat damn TV ad.And it covers the 80's nicely (about as well as you coulddo on a single CD), from slow Ska (Sampson and Delilah), to New Wave Surf(Party Weekend); from pure Wave (Favorite Shirts), to straight rock-punk(Blue Spark).Start with this disc, then buy vol. 2, then vol. 10, then....Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Revisit the 80's (without the bad hair)
Let's be honest- you've missed new wave. You might have denied it, might have said, "I like my male rock stars macho, scruffy, and atonal," or "I love me some coy, hyper-sexualized girlie pop stars!"But why not go back to 80's- when you could get both affected masculinity and unabashedly feminine romance from your musicians, all at once!Men sang yearning ballads about women (Duran Duran's "Rio," for example), while wearing eyeliner. And talk about your pop hooks!Just because they're layered with synthesizers doesn't mean they're not incredibly catchy (like "You Might Think," by the Cars). You say you were never really into the genre, huh?Did you ever see an 80's movie?Even one? These are all classic songs, and even if you don't recognize the titles- "She Blinded Me With Science," and "I Melt With You," for starters- you'll recognize the music.
5-0 out of 5 stars It will melt with you
This is one of the greatest 80's New Wave colections i have.Although Im only 13 me and my friends enjoy this CD so much.I listen to it every day and never get sick of it.Takes on me and blinds me with science, i ran sofar away so ooo hold me now hold my hole entire heart.I can't wait tobring it to Rock 'n' Roll high school!

5-0 out of 5 stars an awesome cd
If you like good music, this cd is definatly for you. My favorite is "How soon is now" by the Smiths. That is a really great song, any fan of the 80's will love that song, as well as many of the other greatsongs on this album. 4-0 out of 5 stars Some decent hits but it might be hard to get to the pinkie
For me the question with a hit collection like this is whether or not in can fill some holes in my music collection. One of the strengths of these volumes from "Entertainment Weekly" is that they usually have more than their fair share of #1 songs from a given years. For "Entertainment Weekly: The Greatest Hits 1986" that is certainly the case, beginning with the last #1 song from that year, "Walk Like an Egyptian" by the Bangles, and adding Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love," Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus," Starship's "Sara," The Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town," and Mr. Mister's "Kyrie."That means half the of the dozen tracks collected here made it to the top of the charts.Of course, that increases the likihood that you already have these. The good news is that with a couple of those songs, "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Life inaNorthern Town," you are off into one-hit wonder territory. You probably picked up albums like Mr. Mister's "Welcome to the Real World" and a hit collection by the Bangles either then or now, but who went out of their way to get Falco's CD, I ask you?2-0 out of 5 stars A So-So Hit and Miss
So-so collection from the year 1986 mixing gems like Timbuk 3's deeply cynical and scathing "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades," Howard Jones' pensive "No One is To Blame," Eddie Money's comeback hit "Take Me Home Tonight" (rendered immeasurably essential thanks to the explosive vocals of Ronnie Spector) and The Dream Academy's wispy "Life in a Northern Town," with really lame cuts like Starship's "Sara," Glass Tiger's "Don't Forget Me," Mr. Mister's "Kyrie," Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" and Falco's gimmicky "Rock Me Amadeus."Missing from this collection are Steve Winwood's "Higher Love," Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer," Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls," and Human League's "Human" (each of which was a #1 single in 1986).As a result the dross outnumbers the gems.Pass.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was looking for.
I read another review that said this CD would have the radio version of "Rock Me Amadeus - Falco".I bought it just for that song, only to find out it's the remix. The CD is still worth the $x.xx for the other songs. - All of the other songs are the ones you would expect. ... Read more
