A great mix of hard to find music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old School Skater
Damn, I havent even bought this CD but boy, talk about remeniscing, I think I spelled that right, hmm, I remmeber the skate board days, New Wave girlfreind, man....great CD, there's nothing like 80's New Wave, or just 80's Rock, the music now? Shoot, its all over produced and bland, I 'd rather listen to daeth metal than the music now, well, I actually do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another great one in the series
I've been picking up these in the "Compilations" section over the years, and have never stopped enjoying them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't figure out what's on this CD?Here's the list:
I ordered this CD without having a clue as to what was on it (with theexception of the track by Kajagoogoo). 3-0 out of 5 stars Angel Delivered!
I bought this CD because it has the original 1983 version of Real Life's "Send Me An Angel" which I couldn't find anywhere else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money for "Just Got Lucky" and "Emotion"
Volume 11 of the New Wave Dance Hits series is an excellent collection of great 80's rock mixing some of the biggest new wave hits with other lesser known but still strong tracks. The tracks "99 Luftballons", "True", "Talking In Your Sleep", and "One Thing Leads To Another" were all Top 5 singles in the early 80's. Of these tracks, only "One Thing..." has stood the test of time as it still gets regular airplay on modern rock radio. 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY Shiny

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad
If you grew up in the Eighties most of these songs will be familiar to you. Some of these are quite good ( Only You, Oblivious, Come Back and Stay ) and hold up nicely after repeated listening. Some do not, unfortunately. And for the record, the version of Our Lips Are Sealed here ( by the Fun Boy Three ) is NOT the original, as stated by the reviewer above. It was recorded after the Go-Gos did it ( although the lead singer of FBT - Terry Hall - co-wrote the song with Jane Weidlin of the Go-Go's). Overall, a fun nostalgia trip. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 99 Red balloons!
If you loved 99 Red Ballons but can't find the English language radio version that they played--this album has it.It's not a re-mix this is the original song [not to be confused with the travesty English version off Nena's album of greatest hits titled: Nena].That is the only reason I bought this 3 pack, for the one song but you know what there are some other gerat things on here as well! And finding a used copy of this makes it a STEAL!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good stuff from the edge of the 80's
It could be argued that much of what's included in this set actually belonged on a 70's collection, but that's beside the point. You get pretty good bang for the buck with this disc unless you have already invested in another collection that includes some of the more common songs on here.(By common I mean songs like The Knack's "My Sharona".Good, but is it new wave?)By contrast, songs like Blondie's "One Way Or Another", Nick Lowe's excellent "Cruel To Be Kind", Graham Parker's likewise brilliant "Local Girls", Dave Edmunds' "Girls Talk" or The Flying Lizards' version of "Money", are nothing short of brilliant inclusions.Plastic Bertrand's "Ca Plane Pour Moi" never struck me as great, but when I played this disc in the car with my daughter and her friends one day, they shocked me by singing along with the song word for word.Turns out it made a Mary Kate & Ashley movie soundtrack.(And I haven't seen Vol. 1 since.)Great stuff, but "Video Killed The Radio Star"?Was that necessary?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent faire for the 80's enthusiast's
A few of these songs on this disc are pretty common amongst 80's fans (Blondie's One Way or Another, Nick Lowe's Cruel to Be Kind, The Knack's My Sharona and The Buggles VKtRS) but there are a few seriously excellent unknown gems on this disc that a majority of the people will enjoy I think.Starting with Ca Plane Pour Moi from Plastic Bertrand, then skipping to Graham Parker's Local Girls. The highlight of the disc is Tim Curry's (Rocky Horror Picture Show) insane song, I Do the Rock which seems to get better with every listen.Out of the entire collection, I give this one a rating of 7.5 out of 10

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent sampling of early New Wave hits (dancing optional)
New Wave was the term used to describe the music that came after punk rock in the late 1970s and early 1980s, although certainly it included post-punk music as well. However, I never really thought of it sas "dance" music, which means nothing because I never went dancing to disco, techno, or anything in between. So this might be Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" but I just think of it as a solid New Wave collection.New Wave might have been the pop music of its time, but it retained the vigor and irreverence of punk music as well as being musically more sophisticated with its interest in electronics and such. This collection has the virtue of including the songs that defined the change in music, namely the Knack's "My Sharona," the Ramones "Rock & Roll High School," and the song that heralded the creation of MTV, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. These sixteen tracks are devoted more to the one-hit wonders like Tim Curry's "I Do the Rock" and "Gidget Goes to Hell" by Suburban Lawns rather than the big name groups like Blondie (Nick Lowe and Graham Parker are not quite in Deborah Harry's league). But once you get beyond "One Way or Another" you are dealing with Plastic Bertrand and the Flying Lizards rather than Duran Duran, Culture Club, and the Pretends, which is fine, because the point of a hit collection like this one is to add songs you do not have to your music library. In that regard, Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" should easily provide you with a half-dozen songs worth having. ... Good selection of songs.Good CD for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIKE OMIGOSH LIKE TOTALLLY AWESOME FER SHURR!!
With an impresssive track listing this compilation doesn't disappoint. The most valuable thing here is you get songs that are rarely (if ever) on 80's compilations (for example "Don't Put Another Dime in the Juxebox" or "Why Me".) Now if I had a dollar for every 80's compilation that "Too Shy" or "Come On Eileen"appears on,I'd have a wad of cash. It is understandable why they are on here since they were heavily rotated videos on MTV in 1983. My only compliant is that an accompanying video compilation DVD or VHS Tape is not made. Also why not more CD compilations for the Class of 1985,1985,1986 and so on.... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars WOW!Was "Mickey" a GREAT song, or what?!
Nope, in fact it was one of the songs that I hated the first time I heard it and can still gather up a load of revulsion for today. The oddball tune that drags this collection up to the .500 line is Pete Shelley's "Homo Sapien".Funny, catchy and just plain clever, but I worry about Pete.Other than that volume 5 barely trips the meter.Welcome to the middle of the new wave road.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly Quintessential...Nearly
My biggest complaint about this particular album is the inclusion of"Hold onto Something" by Great Buildings. Many of these songs define my days in high school, but for the life of me I can't remember ever hearing of this band. However, I do remember hearing this song...or one very much like it -- Joe Jackson's incredibly popular song titled, "I'm the Man," from his album, "I'm the Man" (1979), which was hugely popular through the early eighties. 5-0 out of 5 stars Those Were The Days-- Great New Wave Collection!
The best entry in Rhino's awesome "New Wave Hits" series.(Volume 1 which covers the late 70's is also excellent). All 16 songs are culled from 1982 which was indeed a very good year for pop music. Haircut One Hundred's "Love Plus One" and Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran" were anthems of the(then) young MTV Generation. These quirky video darlings raged like a hurricane of fresh air in the face of bland corporate schlock which hogged the airwaves. Songs like the Go Go's "Vacation" and Tommy Tutone's "867-5309" were not only pure fun-- they were also well-crafted 3-minute pop gems. In fact, nearly every tune on volume 5 is cut from the same intelligent pop mold. Other standouts from this set include the vastly underrated Marshall Crenshaw's "Someday Someway", The Jam's "A Town Called Malice" and Soft Cell's absurdly humorous "Sex Dwarf". The only weak cuts are Gang of Four's "Man in Uniform" and the truly horrible "Art of Parties" by Japan. Overall, this is a fantastic collection which harkens back to a truly innovative time in pop music-- abrief time when catchy Hit Singles ruled and all possibilities seemed endless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The amount of research and work...........!
To get the music on the"Underground Oldies, Vol. 1-10" series onto cd, legally, was a job in itself!!!Long term soul/sweet soul record collectors surely understand! Some of the rarest, hardest to locate (especially in pristine condition), and most expensive music to obtain are long, out of print 45s.A "demarcation line" is crossed when entering the venue of 45 record collecting.True heavies of record collecting are members of that elite club! For the most part, doors to accumulate a large collection of rare 45s, closed so long ago collectors went from being "Dad" to "Grandpappa" status!I.T.P Records is the only company that has legally reissued this amount in volume of rare and ultra-rare soul/sweet soul music compilation cds.The 10 cds in this series contain many very rare and very expensive records on them.Heck, the writer has only seen the ultra rare Four Mints album for sale perhaps twice in the past 5 years, and each time it sold for over $1,000.00!In this series are some of the best ballads off that lp, WOW!Unlike some of the other non-authorized sweet soul compilations "floating" around, Alan Beck and crew went through all the pain-staking work of obtaining legal rights to put the songs from numerous, numerous small, long gone, obscure, "what label?", where, when, how..... onto cd to present availibility worldwide, what a task and what a success!.Failure to obtain legal rights is the reason the other non-authorized series are not obtainable through normal retail channels.Very, very few long term, hard core, soul/sweet soul record collectors can lay claim to possessing in their record collections all the songs on the 10 cds!Even for them, far from being that easy! These cds are LOADED, with rare soul/sweet recordings, and thanks to the efforts of the folks at I.T.P. they are obtainable to enjoy at what amounts to a fraction of the total value of the original records themselves! If one is an old-school soul/swet soul collector, and does not currently possess this great series, get the credit card out now.As a legitimate release, for the type of music it contains, this series is #1!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting rare oldies CD.
This CD features 18 soul ballads recorded during the late 1960s and early-'70s by artists who did not amount to much but whose work merits a closer look and reappraisal by "sweet soul" afficionados. It's worth noting that most of these songs were released on small, short-lived labels and are making their CD debut here. The songs by The Pretenders, The Magic Touch, The Entertainers IV, The Four Mints and The Superbs are my favorites but the others are also quite enjoyable. Many thanks to Alan Beck at ITP Records for compiling and issuing this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars What A Surprise!
I purchased this CD for Billy Stewart's "I'm No Romeo" which I heard him sing at a concert in the early '70's.I have been searching for this song for years. It was the only song I knew on this CD and what a surpirse - I liked every other song.I have sinced played it several times. The ballads flow beautifully.I can certainly say I got my money's worth on this one. ... Worth twice the asking price just for Nik Kershaw's Wouldn't It Be Good!! Rest of the tracks are "vintage" 80s' also. The whole Just Can't Get Enough series is a must for 80s' music fans. Absolutely no clunkers!!!

While this compilation manages to have unappealing tracks("Girls", "Free Nelson Mandela"), there are some reallynice songs on here."Hold Me Now" and "Cruel Summer"are really great songs to commute to, and "The Stand" is apowerful and anthemic delight."Wouldn't It Be Good" isdelectable and "Whisper to a Scream" is a rare gem. This is amust buy for anyone wanting an '80s compilation that doesn't contain theusual hackneyed "hitsapalooza".I even liked "Hero Takes aFall" and I never knew I could like a Bangles song! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Where is the rest of the OXO album?
Amazing no one ever make any attempt to release the original OXO album. The whole LP was full of great pop songs which made dance a generation in the early 80s in Mar del Plata, Argentina Every DJ in town had a copy of the album. Despite their hit "Whirly Girl", "You make it sound so easy" and "I'll take you back" were on top. Please Rhino help us out!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I think the Tubes would be embarrassed to be included here
I doubt the Tubes would want their song "She's a Beauty" lumped together in this package of songs. But you gotta love having access to a copy of OXO's "Whirly Girl".Geez, I can remember buyingthat album when it was first released in the early 80's!Great song!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands down the series champ
With Volume 4 of the Just Can't Get Enough series Rhino really got their act together.Leading off with Devo's greatest non-hit ever "Freedom Of Choice", this disc rarely lets up and only occasionally stumbles. The Boomtown Rats "Up All Night", doomed Phil Seymour's "Precious To Me", and the Translators "Everywhere That I'm Not" all make for legitimate reasons to buy this disc, but the two killers are The Members early MTV staple "Working Girl" and The Monroes "What Do All The People Know".Try finding THOSE somewhere else. One other great song that could have been a huge plus to this collection was The Kings "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On" but THEY CUT HALF OF IT OFF!!!Whose idea was that?No matter.Search under The Kings on Amazon for the debut album and hear it like it was meant to be heard.5-0 out of 5 stars Volume Four Makes Case For Best In Series!
I'm busy collecting this terrific series by Rhino. Volume Four is the fifth CD in the series I've added to my collection and is so far the best. Everything you associate with the new Wave era of the 1980s is here. Generals and Majors by XTC captures the Cold War doom and gloom of the Reagan years (those years seem rather innocent now). Love and Lonliness by the Motors gives you synth pop at its best. Solid New Wave sound can be found in the Kings Switchin' to Glide and the Undertones It's Going to Happen. I really like Workin Girl by the Members and What Do All the People Know by the Monroes. Also represented are Devo with Freedom of Choice and Soft Cell's Tainted Love (Both of TV commercial fame). The twelve cuts here really show the range of New Wave music. Some of it is lighthearted and meant for fun while others take things quite seriously. I look forward to completing the set, but doubt any of the others will match this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars Tributation?
Astralasia shines on this LP.Any fan of Madonna would SAVOR and SALIVATE over this collection of "tributes".It's pure fun to hear these artists record these songs. What great fun to critique and poke fun as needed. This isn't rocket science, but even some of Madonna's rather bland tracks: "Swim" and "Live To Tell" are brought home.Another shiner is "Frozen".Applause to Cleopatra Records. Clap. Clap. Clap. Clap....(fade)

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Madonna tribute album
I personally love Cleopatra Records' tribute albums, let alone goth and industrial music. And being a big Madonna fan, I thought the idea of synth-pop, goth, and industrial artists/bands covering Madonna's songs were a wicked idea. Normally I'm not wild on tribute albums, especially nowadays when even Britney Spears and NSYNC have tribute albums out (i.e a bunch of unknown singers covering bad pop music). Personally I prefer the second volume of "Virgin Voices". Still the first album had some first rate cover songs. One of my particular favorites is Loleatta Holloway's cover of "Like a Prayer". She turns the pop song into a house classic. I didn't realize until later on that this tribute album would be my first introduction to one of my favorte pop/rock artists Amanda Ghost. I'm not wild on "Bad Girl" as a song but Amanda's contributions to the song was enjoyable enough for me. I thought KMFDM and Front Line Assembly did an excellent job of giving the listener an earful on their versions of "Material Girl" and "Justify My Love". Their abrasive, industrial beats allowed them to turn Madonna's songs into their own. I can't say that I like "Like a Virgin" as a song nor did I like the version that Bow Wow Wow singer Annabella Lwin did. Being a big Dead or Alive fan, I loved their version of "Why It's So Hard". That isn't really one of my favorite Madonna songs but they way they covered the song made me appreciate the song even more so. The only other miss I found on this album was the "Burning Up" [Interface Mix] by The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. I'm not really familiar with the song itself nor did I enjoy the TVHKB's version. Other than that and "Like a Virgin", I loved what the artists and bands brought to the table with their renditions of classic Madonna songs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 80's Goodies
Definetely one of the better compilations. Included are modern English's "I Melt With You" along with many other classic tunes of the time. Best suprises are the Belle Stars female Madness sounding "Sign of The Times" and Heaven 17's great "Let Me Go"

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic New Wave
A strong entry in the "New Wave Hits" series, Volume 9 contains some of the best known songs of the era. "Melt with You", "Blister in the Sun" and "Save it for Later" are early 80's anthems. Duran Duran's "Rio" and ABC's "Poison Arrow" were huge MTV hits. Each of these tunes will be immediately familiar to anyone who grew up in the early 80's. Also worthy are Marshall Crenshaw's "Whenever You're on My Mind" and "Love My Way", a classic from the Psychedelic Furs. Once again, Rhino is to be commended for keeping alive the great music of a bygone era. Thirtysomethings who actually experienced this fun, upbeat music will no doubt love this collection. Sure beats the heck out of today's "music". Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Five stars for the selection of the music, 0 stars for Rhino
This is a great selection of music for this new wave compilation, and I consider it one of my favorites from this series. However, BUYERS BEWARE: Rhino has shortened the length of several of these songs.I am not sure why they do this, but it is really irritating. Most of the time it is annoyingly obvious how they "instantly" edit these songs (the ending of the song just fades in a matter of seconds). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A step up from the so-so disc 2
As these discs go, #3 is fairly packed with goodies, some you've heard enough to make your bowels move, and some that are pretty cool surprises.Gary Numan's "Cars" kicks things off and sounds a lot better than I remember it sounding.Maybe I'm mellowing. The B-52's "Private Idaho", "What I Like About You" by The Romantics and Squeeze's "Tempted" all fit into the "heard it a million times" category, but since they're all pretty cool songs I decided to give them a pass. The most pleasant surprises on this volume are Rockpile's "Teacher Teacher" and "88 Lines About 44 Women" by The Nails.Uncovering nuggets like these are what makes this collection fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Of The Line
This and Vol 5 are the best in the series. This is a good reflection of the diversity and talent of many of the 80's best. Many of the bands here had lenghty careers (XTC, Squeeze) while others made the most of thier 15 minutes of fame. How great to hear Visages "Fade To Grey" and Kid Creoles "Stool Pigeon" again. Great c.d., I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Series!
Unlike the other CDs in this series, every cut is a gem! Well known classics like "Cars", "Private Idaho" and "Teacher, Teacher" are combined with less well known (at least tome) equally great songs like "88 Lines", "Stool Pigeon"and especially "I Live in the City". I own vol 1-7 and 13; thisis the best! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the best 80s compilations
There are really some inspired choices here. This may be one of the only places where you'll find "Peter Gunn" and "Perfect Way." But more than that, this may be one of the best-sequenced compilations albums around. "Love Plus One" "If You Leave" and "True Faith" sound like they belong together, riding together on a crisp, percolating wave. Other choices may be more obvious, like the omnipresent "I Melt with You" and "Hold me Now," but I swear this thing provides an outstanding overall listening experience. I gotta lotta 80s, and this is absolutely in my top three of the greatest decade comps out there. There's stuff for the casual listener and hard-to-find stuff that will complete the collections of many die-hards. 'Shame it's out of print.

4-0 out of 5 stars No fluffly late eighties here
The perfect eighties music compilation, if you don't like bands like Poison or other songs like the sort.It has the can't live without song "If You Leave" by OMD.And a nice mix of other earlier 80's songs that you have grown to really like.I picked this one because the other 80's cd's threw in some artists that really didn't blend well on the same disc.Definetely the right choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better 80's collections
For the price, this CD is one of the better collections of 80's songs thatI have seen. It has some stuff that is on many other collections, but italso has some songs that are harder to find, such as True Faith by NewOrder, which is one of the great songs of the 80's, and Smalltown Boy, byBronski Beat. The campy You Spin Me Around (which Adam Sandler did ahilarious version of in the Wedding Singer) is also one of the highlights. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 80's tunes
The gem on this disc is obviously Ultravox's Vienna. While the others are very, very good and a few crappy tunes I can't even remember getting air time back in the day, the disc is an overall prize.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cult Classics
With songs like "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Echo Beach," this collection is definitely worth having. The titles that aren't familiar are bound to grow on anyone open to hearing something they haven't heard before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cultural Gap?
After reading the first few reviews I thought it might be appropriate to respond. There are a large number of hits on this album, but a lot of them weren't US hits.If you lived in the UK, Europe or Australia - you will know and like a lot of these songs - even americans who got into the new wave scene in the late 70s and early 80s will know songs from clubs that never got radio play.I really enjoyed this album - and if you know a reasonable number of the songs - I am sure you will enjoy it - it's great at parties too!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Detroit Radio 80's classics!!
I ordered this CD used & what a bargain!! Almost every song takes me right back to the tunes that had radio play in Detroit in the 80's - 89X! I don't think you'll be sorry with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent disc in the NWHOT80's series
I tend to judge these discs not by the number of instantly familiar tracks that they have, but rather by the number of great songs that you heard once or twice and could never manage to track down anywhere else.Of the big hits, only the Human League's "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" actively nauseates, but this is only a minor criticism. The rest of the songs make for an overall enjoyable listen, with The Jam's "Beat Surrender", The Plimsoul's "A Million Miles Away" and A Flock Of Seagulls "Wishing" all combining to push the collection over the top and out of the realm of the ordinary.(Extra points because the Jam and the Plimsouls songs are truly excellent and as far as I'm concerned were truly lost.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
Volume 10 in this complete and unprecedented New Wave series certainly lives up to the standards of the rest of the albums. It includes severalmore well known songs (Our House--a standard in any 80s compilation), aswell as many more 80s tunes less universally known (Putin' on the Ritz, etc). For fans of the New Wave series and New Wave music in general, thisCD is a valuable addition to your collection. However, if you are onlylooking for the standards in 80s music and the best of New Wave, I wouldsuggest you shop around first to see if there are any better New Wave CDswith more of the classic hits you want. ...
