Editorial Review

Who would have imagined that the missing link between Miles Davis and Portishead would be a pasty Brit band whose synth-driven hits show up from time to time on rock-of-the-'80s collections? For those only familiar with MTV hits like "Talk Talk" and "It's My Life," this compilation is the beginning of a revelation. Talk Talk mastermind Mark Hollis is an eccentric genius whose hook-laden hits hide an equally satisfying catalog of art-rock experimentation. As Talk Talk evolved, Hollis (opting for a cut-up technique that anticipated the Pro-Tools revolution) ditched synth-pop and produced some of the most sublime late-night records ever. Think Stevie Winwood tranquilized by listening to too much Blue Nile and you start to get the picture. But fair warning: buy this album, and there's a good chance you'll end up purchasing the whole catalog. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Deeper than you might think
If you only remember Talk Talk from their MTV success days, you will be surprised by the range and depth of this record.I love "Today" and "It's My Life," they were great 80's synth-pop-dance tracks, the latter of course recently remade by No Doubt. The first half of this disc contains the more easily accessible material from the early albums, but from the very beginning one can see Talk Talk eager to break out of the synth-pop mold.As Talk Talk matured, their records became less pop-oriented, more textured and nuanced. There is a lot of great music here, none of it fitting into any preconceived mold of what pop music is supposed to be.Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars music the way I remember it
These are some of the great songs from my college days, and since we're listening to digital music now rather than albums, the music is so much richer than what I remember.I'm glad I bought this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get to know Talk Talk
Once people get over the 80's shame, forever linked with gated snares and haircuts, they will hear clearly that some of the best and most innovative music was written in that era. Standing in the midst of this was Mark Hollis and Talk Talk. This band used the flavour of the 80's as a carrier for their well crafted hooks and heart wrenching melodies, sung with the honesty of Hollis to produce such classics as It's my Life and My foolish friend. Anybody who compares these songs to Duran Duran clearly isn't listening well enough. But Talk Talk didn't stop there. They went on to produce jazz influenced albums that started off with the masterpiece, Colours of spring, with backing by Steve Winwood, and towards more obtuse but critically acclaimed offerings such as Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. You really can't go wrong with Talk Talk except, as others have mentioned, you might end up buying the entire catalogue. Go for it. Enrich your soul. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a-ha, at their finest hour
introduced back in the phils. in '85, a-ha music such as "take on me", "love is reason" & "the sun always shine in tv" were the staples of new wave dance parties, such parties won't be complete without any a-hamusic.but what appeals to me even back then was the diversity of their sound, ballads like hunting "high & low", and a personal fave, "living a boy's adventure tale" still linger on my mind after 20+ years. i've introduced my kid lately to the beatles & other class acts, and i wont mind my 4 year old daughter fall in love like i did with them especially with adebut like hunting high & low.their later materials like crying in the rain, living daylights & you are the one (which were single releases) were great stuff, but other songs from the respective albums won't much ring a bell. this is thebest album they came out critically & commercially. 80's lives on forever!

4-0 out of 5 stars hunting high and low
amazing cd. simply one of the greatest electronica albums of our time but one of the most underappreciated in the united states. If you like "take on me" you'll certainly enjoy this cd, "especially blue sky", "hunting high and low", and "the sun always shines on tv".Typically this group has been thought of as a one hit wonder, but the songs on this album are all very amazing and whole new music language that is still heard even now in popular electronica. There is many more great albums released by a*ha that we were huge hits in europe that are must haves if you appreciate the sounds of this short work.

5-0 out of 5 stars TOO PRECIOUS!one of the best box sets
Chrissie Hynde is fierce.Listening to this collection it'srefreshing to realize this music never sounds dated nor were they ever 'punk' - The Pretenders are pure rock and roll.I don't think there is a female singer who can match Chrissie's attitude, delivery and snarl. She is the unchallenged queen of rock and roll!
4-0 out of 5 stars KILLER COLLECTION, EVEN WITHOUT "GOODBYE"
As a lifelong Pretenders fan (yep - I still have all the original vinyl, bought @ Tower Records way back when Lp's were $5.99) I waspsyched to finally see a quality representation of the band's output available - not just Chrissie, mind you, but the BAND as well.Don't mistake - she's a phenomenal writer/performer/musician - it's just that I like to see credit given where deserved - and in Ms. Hynde's case, she couldn't have done better than to be backed-up by her excellent compadres, namely Pete Farndon (RIP), Martin Chambers & James Honeyman-Scott (again, RIP).One caveat though - since so much of this collection features Chrissie & Co. in her post-partum period (i.e. still spry but definitely more mellow) I *DO* wish they'd had the sense to include my personal favorite track from the period, namely "Goodbye" from the GI Jane soundtrack... the public missed the boat by not making this a #1 chart hit as it so clearly deserved. If you missedthis one, by all means do yourselfa huge favor and pick-up the film's soundtrack, featuring TWO excellent Pretenders songs and some other great musical choices, including a killer track from Exene Cervenka's Auntie Christ outfit & much, much more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I got this as a birthday gift, and what a great gift it was. I love the Pretenders, one of my favorite bands of all time. Since I only have two of their albums on CD this was a real treat. I have most of their stuff on vinyl. It's great having all the good songs in one place. I have been listening to this set for the last two weeks, every day. Some of the photos in the booklet are a nice touch. A nice bonus are the previously unreleased covers of "Angel of the Morning" and Warren Zevon's "Reconsider Me", both are great. The sound quality is fantastic, someone put a lot of work into this set, and it shows. A great box set from one of the greatest bands ever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best, most varied 80s compilations available
Having both graduated high school and college in the 1980s, my husband and I became fans of 80s music for life--in fact, our recent wedding was all 80s!We own at least 10 different 80s compilation CDs, and this is definitely one of the best. The album is very diverse:it includes the expected 80s pop hits such as "Mickey" by Toni Basil and "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves, but it also offers some great, lesser-know tunes, namely "Mary's Prayer" by Danny Wilson and "Don't Shed a Tear" by Paul Carrack.Similarly, not only does the CD feature big 80s rock bands such as J. Geils and Steve Miller, but also there are some one-hit wonder groups, including Johnny Hates Jazz and Cutting Crew.A wonderful blend of various styles from that great decade of music. ... Read more

Ifyou saw the movie, you would like the album. I would suggest a different order for the tracks, but it is fairly reasonable as it is... Also, if you see the movie in detail, you would spect to get more tracks in this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my most treasured albums
I got this as a present from a friend.I still don't quite like Wilco, but I learned to like Bragg after this. His sarcasm & reticence combines nicely with Guthrie's lyrics.Great songs to shout along to in the car, especially Joe DiMaggio.Black Wind Blowing is sad but well suited to being played very loud.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but disappointing...3 1/2 stars
My younger brother made a good point, I thought, when he told me this album should never have been made.Instead, he said, Woody Guthrie's daughter should have found two other artists--another singer, and another band, even--and had THEM do volume two.Hayden and The Flaming Lips.Soltero and Yo La Tengo.Daniel Johnston and Neutral Milk Hotel.Morrissey and The Postal Service. It could have still used Woody Guthrie's lyrics, but it would have been something fresh...not this...and that format could have gone on indefinitely for any number of albums.
3-0 out of 5 stars What did you expect, it's a sequel!
Of course it's not as good as the first. They took the best material they had and used it on Volume 1. Well, mostly. Somehow they left behind "Remember the Mountain Bed," a wistful song with a fairy-tale quality; "Joe Dimaggio's Done It Again," a rollicking period piece; and "Feed Of Man," which I'm still a little puzzled by, but in a good way. I just noticed that the three songs I've mentioned are all sung by Jeff Tweedy. That may be a coincidence, but he does seem to take the reins of this project over from Billy Bragg. Bragg fans needn't worry, though; it's all about the lyrics, and the legacy of the greatest folksinger ever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classics, Indeed
The Police are a pretty good band, I think. Don't know how to describe them exactly, though. Sophisticated new wave, perhaps? They're a three piece rock group with fairly thoughtful lyrics, jangly guitar and drums, though catchy, often surprise you, even of repeated listens.
4-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits From The Police
The Police's "Every Breath You Take" compilation includes all the major hits plus a few hidden gems (notably "Walking on the Moon" and "Invisible Sun"). Minus one star for an unnecessary remix of "Message in a Bottle" and the lackluster reunion single "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86" -- proving that Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers knew exactly when to quit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sychroicity

i had been in a deer hunting accident. i awoke in a hospital and down the hall a boombox was playing this album very loudly. i knew everything was going to be okay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth re-buying
I owned an older CD of this from the 80s, one of his rocking-est albums and my favorite, along with "Delivery Man". The definitely superior sonic remaster (not a lot of obvious re-mixing for a change!), the bonus disc and informative liner notes really made this worth buying. I subsequently bought the other remasters with bonus discs, and now have a huge library of THE Elvis (as I heard him claim on a radio interview in 1977), with loads of demos, alternative versions and tasty goodies.

There seem to be two major camps of U2 fans now: Those who dig the early albums (good and sensible people), and those who only like the ones from the '90s, putting everything previous down as "classic rock." But U2 only became a classic rock sort of band in 1984, with Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars U2 - 'Under A Blood Red Sky' (Island)
Review no. 73. Another classic '80's alternative CD reissue. Unless I'm wrong,I believe this very show took place literally a few days after their 'War' tour hit my hometown.Liked the way that Mtv,VH1 Classic and Nightline used to run music videos for this album endlessly.I seem to remember a one-time 2am TV special that aired songs from this very show that WASN'T on the lp.Would love to have a complete recording of this 1983 concert.Tracks that more than hold their own here are "Gloria",their first ever hit "I Will Follow",the political "Sunday Bloody Sunday","New Years Day" and "40".By today's standards, this album might be considered to be more of a live EP than an lp.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jersey Girl Says......
I suppose I fall into the "Good and Sensible" category, since I prefer U2's Old stuff. This is the first album I bought from them. Loved it then, Love it even more now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Even back then they Rocked !!!
This is a great little 'Live' Album. Fresh, energetic and classic U2. The interaction with the crowd and the 'live' sound is retained and you do get a feeling of what it is like at a U2 concert. Highlights are 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', 'Party Girl' and '40'. Even back then, you can taste the magic. If you like U2, you will love this album...For the casual fan, buy it, and see what all the fuss was about... ... Read more

This might be the finest album ever to be created. Every song is of high quality but they all work so well as a whole. 5-0 out of 5 stars It IS the best album ever made
At live shows from the time of Ocean Rain's release, singer Ian McCulloch introduced tracks as being from the "best album ever made, by the best band in the world."McCulloch's unremitting ego might be one reason the band never got the recognition they deserved, but his audacious statement about this album was at least partially right. From start to finish, Ocean Rain is stunning, of the same caliber as the greatest works by that other band from Liverpool. The last four songs (side 2 of the original LP, now tracks 6-9) have been justly referred to as the greatest LP side ever.Stop reading and buy this album. If you already own it, buy another copy for someone you love. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth another listen
Let us not forget this cd for too long.
4-0 out of 5 stars Merely a "good" collection of Echo songs - it's not the best stuff ever, but it's still pretty decent
Echo & The Bunnymen is most well-known for their 80's hit "The Killing Moon" (which was featured in the cult hit movie "Donnie Darko"). While this is a great song, the rest on here just aren't as good. Echo & The Bunnymen are clearly pretty talented, but the singer and the lyrics just aren't that good or interesting most of the time. None of the songs are bad here, thankfully, but they're not great either - they're all indeed catchy, however. Musically it's pretty standard 80's indie/pop rock, as there's little innovation to be found here. If you're an Echo & The Bunnymen fan then this is the collection to get, but if you're looking for great songs you won't really find them here. I would argue that "The Killing Moon" alone bumps this up to a "4" from a "3.5". This is merely a "good" (arguably decent) CD. Slightly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Spud's For You
The wonderful weirdness that is Devo emerged during a very bleak season in pop music; they were indeed a welcome breath of odd air.Devo's minimalist, abrupt style caused many to label them as punk, but they were far too smart and musically innovative to fit under this heading.Punk seemed determined to thwart music while Devo simply redefined it.Putting aside for the moment their marvelously worked-out theories of de-evolution, the songs were actually very stripped down rock and roll reminiscent of early Kinks, delivered in streamlined techno packaging. It may have been robotic, but it was electronic fun with a danceable beat.Their covers, Satisfaction, Coal Mine, are particularly amusing; no matter how straight the delivery seems to be their tongues are always planted squarely in their cheeks.Devo's lyrics were sly and worth listening to, and the visual element of their presentation put the icing on the stainless steel cake. This was a complete act that delivered on every level. There are numerous Best Of Devo CDs out there, I recommend this one, it's got many of the "must have" tracks like Whip It, Girl You Want, Coal Mine, Satisfaction, and Through Being Cool. The companion CD, Misses, complements it nicely, and if you really have to go the distance there's the 2-CD retrospective, Pioneers Who Got Scalped.Always interesting to see which groups last and which do not.At the time those red hats and jumpsuits seemed to usher in a novelty act that would be gone in a week.Twenty years later, Devo sounds better than ever. ... Editorial Review

Until 1978, Blondie was perceived mostly as a '60s-referencing, British-Invasion-meets-girl-groups band. With veteran producer Mike Chapman at the helm for their third album, though, everything changed for this group bred from the New York punk scene. Honing in on Blondie's strongest points--Deborah Harry's come-hither vocals and Clem Burke's powerhouse drumming--Chapman helped recast the band to the power pop side of new wave, and with impressive results. Driven by the punk-meets-disco chart-topping hit, "Heart of Glass," and the herky-jerky "One Way or Another," as well as a muscular cover of the Nerves' "Hanging on the Telephone," Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Peak of a Mercurial Band
I first heard Blondie's "Parallel Lines" LP while browsing at the Tower Records store in Westwood, near UCLA in 1978.By the time I heard the opening chords of the second song, I had a copy of the LP in line for the cash register.
5-0 out of 5 stars !and this is why i love this album
It did truly change my life. I was 14 years old. I was smart, not abused or geeky but i needed a true outlet... I had loved spinning girl group 45's and Beatles records handed down to me. Parallel Lines introduced me to sarcasm. And it stuck. Also it's just a perfect record. Mike Chapman helped shape my adolescence, but this is his (almost) crowning moment. Try not to scream: "I fell in love with you". Everyone should have Parallel Lines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rockin' with Blondie
Remember the sixties? It was a time when music was simple, catchy, short, and fun. Bands with silly names and fresh faces could churn out platter after platter of sing-along, dance-inducing joy, and soar to the top of the charts in the process. And then something called 1970 happened, and music changed. It stopped being simple and fun, short and catchy, and became, in a word, progressive. Now, this "progressive" music did produce a few good results (Pink Floyd, Fragile-era Yes, etc.), but frankly, the sixties were sorely missed. Enter Blondie.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great soundtrack with noticable omissions
La Bamba (1987.) The soundtrack to the Ritchie Valens biopic of the same name.
2-0 out of 5 stars OLDE REVIEW.La Bamba
Sound track other than the primary cut, LaBamba .Did not seem the same as the movie.Would not recommened the sound track. Was purchased as a gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yo no soy marinero.
This is a solid soundtrack.Los Lobos do a good job of duplicating Ritchie Valens' old songs (although there was no accordion on the original versions). The other cover songs, by Howard Huntsberry, Marshall Crenshaw and Brian Setzer, are also well done.Bo Diddley does a great remake of his classic "Who Do You Love".The last two songs by Los Lobos are not Ritchie Valens songs, but they are okay.If you liked the movie, you will probably like the soundtrack, too. ... Editorial Review

One need hear only the first notes of this collection--the Edge's ringing guitar notes ushering in "Pride (In the Name of Love)"--to be taken back to 1984: Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher rule the Western world, the L.A. Olympics is the top sports story, and Ms. Pac-Man reigns at arcades. In rock & roll, there's U2 growing in stature with each new tour and title. Even doubters of the Irish lads have to concede that together they formed the one '80s band with the skill and sense of scale to take over the airwaves and concert stages in a decade of diminished expectations. This 15-song '80s best-of assortment (stick around for the hidden track) spans the decade, reaching back to 1980's "I Will Follow," when Bono and company were peach-fuzzy and earnest as choirboys, and tracking their path through their most glaring misstep, 1988's overblown Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Toast with Guinness (Paul or Extra Dark)
U2's 'The Best of 1980-1990' may be straightforward, but that simply shows how important and successful they have been for harnessing passion. This compilation works because their singles are often their best material. The '[Limited Edition]' is worth the extra purchase because it has some essential material.(There are some weaker songs as well, but the B-sides will prevent the collection from becoming repetitious.)"Pride (In the Name of Love)," "New Year's Day," "I Will Follow," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," and "Desire" have all rewritten the history of pop/rock music. They resonate well even today. The other allegedly lesser songs are merely great.Singles were their strongest suit, but their albums are solid and consistent as well.(Although the nineties found some uneven albums, but that should be saved for another day.)Passion is rock's hallmark, and Bono's primal singing, The Edge's inventive guitar, Adam Clayton's throbbing baselines, and Larry Mullen's athletic and idiosyncratic drumming all have come together for some of the best big rock band songs since The Beatles.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good but flawed collection of U2's first decade...
For the casual listener, the single disk best of 1980-1990 will suffice to pop in the car for road trips and in the multi-disk changer of eighties hits.
3-0 out of 5 stars Insufficient Anthology - I'm Still Hungry
It's hard to think of U2 as a "greatest hits" band. Not just because every one of the group's albums contains a number of outstanding tracks never released as singles, but also because U2 continues to be so present and vital a force in the music scene that reducing its career to a surface-skimming overview seems somehow improper. Perhaps the band members themselves have similar feelings, which might explain why it took them no less than eighteen years from the release of their first album to issue their first official compilation - and one limited to material from the band's first decade, at that.
