5-0 out of 5 stars What got me started...
Well, this was the very first Blondie cd I bought. This cd got me hooked. I'm a HUGE Blondie fan and it's all thanks to this (and "Heart of Glass" my fav song ever). It's cool because it has the popular songs and the not so popular songs that you just love! Awesome cd...

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Collection Of Songs
I never owned any album by Blondie other than this Best Of, so I don't know that much about the group's studio albums. I put over half of the songs from this album onto my i-pod so I think it is definitely worth getting unless you can find a more complete compilation with newer songs like Maria and Good Boys. Anyways, my favorite tracks are Heart Of Glass, Dreaming, In The Flesh, Sunday Girl, Call Me, and Atomic. Blondie was certainly a unique talent that paved the way for other female artists. Her songs hold up quite well even today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps Adrenaline Pumping

Editorial Review

After several years of hard living and the commercial disappointment of his previous band the Stooges (occasional rave reviews do not keep the lights on), Iggy Pop continued his collaboration with David Bowie for his first solo album. Bowie serves as producer and cowriter, and his artsy, stylized hand can be felt negotiating the sessions. Unlike the explosive firepower of the Stooges, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars icy music that shows its cracks...
The Idiot is a template for minimalist synthpop albums from the 80s.With his pained vocals and blaring guitars, Iggy manages to inject a humanity into the pieces that is often missing from derivative albums.Listen for the nakedness of the vocals.

3-0 out of 5 stars Iggy Pop - 'The Idiot' (Virgin)
Originally released in 1977,'The Idiot' was Iggy's second solo effort.I happen to disagree with most other fan's opinion I've heard as far as this album being an Iggy Pop masterpiece.I mean,I thought it was good, but certainly not outstanding.Iggy had apparently gotten with David Bowie to work with him on this album.Tunes I thought showed the most promise were "Sister Midnight","China Girl"(have always liked Iggy's version better than Bowie's anyway),"Night Clubbing","Tiny Girls"(nice sax solo,David)and the eight-minute long "Mass Production".Okay to check out for yourself when you get the chance.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best
Unlike his more recent albums, each song on this album has it's own unique flavor and there's not a bad song on it. Buy it if for no other reason than to have the original "China Girl." This album rocks the house, yo. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent effort! Very adventurous!
Before I start, I wish that Colin Hay and his band Men At Work would have been at 10 albums or so or have just as many hits as Usher, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, or other artists have now. They were on such a roll after two albums (including Cargo), and then what happened?Maybe couldn't handle fame, the floods of fan letters or the multi platinum sales or the pandemonium of fans. But they tore it up in 1982 and 1983! Cargo doesn't match the greatness of Business at Work, but it is a solid album, with adventurous songs like Overkill, It's A Mistake, Settle Down My Boy and others. One standout is the fast paced Restriction Zone and its strumming guitars. Colin and his band make solid pop rock on every song, and the songs are hooked in your head after several listens. These fellows need to get past their bickerings, get a new album out, talk with their managers, and tear up stages once again like they did in their '80s peak. If Prince could sell out shows in 2004, why can't Men at Work?Show the public once again what made the '80s so great with the music!Maybe they won't do it now, but someday. I think that Cargo was one of the band's finest moments.

5-0 out of 5 stars classic pop album!
Men at work' was one of those mtv saturated bands that were very very good and were very misunderstood as a good rock band!they were simple intheir format--steady drums, bass and lead guitar sparsely put with saxophone/flute and well sung music. Cargo-mAW's second album was a prime example of a pop craft masterpiece. it had comedy/tragedy/fun and whatever else without being too commercial. "overkill" is definatly a highlight but songs like "no sign of yesturday" "its a mistake"clearly show the bands political views and also another side to this fantastic bands character. its too bad that they didnt have anything comparable afterwards...but we still have the bonus songs available now in its re-release! cheers!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great new wave rock classic
This album is the classic example of the term SOPHOMORE SUCCESS.Cargo is a great sophomore album from the talented new wave rockers from Australia and proving that they were not merely one hit wonders.very highly recommended.Get this but avoid all albums from the awful Kylie minogue. ... Read more

XTC's frothy, Beatle-esque concept album about birth, death, and the passing of the seasons is hardly soft-headed: its melodic inventiveness and lush orchestrations supports bitterness ("That's Really Super, Supergirl"), displacement ("The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul"), and agnostic tirade ("Dear God") as often as it does the pleasures of sun and shower. 5-0 out of 5 stars All time favorite
This is my favorite Album. From the brilliance of the songwriting to the lush production of Todd Rundgren, every note rings true.I'm constantly inspired by the songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars An alternative classic
This album is a classic. I have no idea what they call the genre today, but way back when, this was alternative, and this was the album that all the kids in black listened to. There is not a bad song on the album. Most people are familiar with Dear God, which is worth the purchase of this CD alone, but every song from Summer's Cauldron to Sacrificial Bonfire is as good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Pet Sounds" of the '80s.
Widely regarded as XTC's best album, "Skylarking" is not my personal favorite (I go with "Oranges and Lemons" for that), but it is one of those records worthy of all the accolades that are heaped upon it.At the height of their powers, the now-studio-bound trio engaged Todd Rundgren as producer. While Rundgren and XTC principle songwriter and guitarist Andy Partridge bumped heads rather severely, through strife comes high art, and this is no exception."Skylarking" is one of the great pop albums of its era.

Buddy Holly-meets-Roxy Music was the hook-filled formula Ric Ocasek and crew fell into on their classic 1978 debut--and it's one they continued to milk throughout the first half of the '80s. As in any formula, it seemed to dilute a bit with each subsequent release. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The topRecordings Of The 80's.
Owning every Cars CD and solo recording by this group I feel quite familiar with the Cars music.I've listened to ALL of them countless times, but always find myself back in "Heartbeat City".What a CD!!!! When the album was first released unbeknownst to me I heard Drive and Magic on the radio, and immediately went out and purchased the cassette. To this day the CD still remains in my changer. This music defined so many things for me back then. I feel this CD help change the direction on music at the time. All they're previous release led up to this.It was the pinnacle of their music.Important yet dreamy at times, dark and light, sad yet compelling. An absolutely fantastic recording that I cannot say enough good things about. On another note I've listened to the New Cars release that just came out..........Todd is great in his own right but this is nothing more than a $$ scheme.I can't help but laugh every time I hear his voice on a favorite Cars song.Give me a break.Ric, are you listening? There is one and only will be one lead singer for the Cars, ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars fitting final album
just when some had written the Cars off -- rumors at the time said the band couldn't even remember the lyrics in tour rehearsals -- they come back with one of their best albums.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's Magic
Heartbeat City did for the Cars, what Hysteria did for Def Leppard. It made them larger then life, and for good reason. The music was fantastic. The real highlights come from the two lesser known singles, "Hello Again" and "Heartbeat City", as well as "Stranger Eyes" and "I Refuse", both excellently done by Ben Orr, who has been and still is, a great loss for the rock world. Buy the album, and love it forever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Healing
"Songs from the Big Chair" was the second Tears for Fears album, released in 1985. Just like the first, it deals with serious subjects like anxiousness, anger and pain but apart from the first it concentrates more on the healing. The music itself is simular but a more mature sound with less synthesizers and more envolving artistic pop/rock. Needless to say Curt Smith ad Roland Orzabal's second album is just as good as the first but it sold much better and gave them the super status they deserved. Still today, looking back "Songs From the Big Chair" is one of the brightest moments of the 80's.
5-0 out of 5 stars Entirely unique musical brilliance
Tears For Fears followed their hit debut THE HURTING with this album, 1985's SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR.At first glance, it appears to be just another pop album from the 1980s, but after one listen, it's clear that SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR is anything but. It's a collection of brilliant songs spawned from the angst and inner turmoil of bass guitarist/vocalist Curt Smith, guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Roland Orzabal, keyboardist Ian Stanley, and drummer Manny Elias.Together, the songs form a masterpiece that is not only one of the best albums of the decade - it's one of the greatest albums ever made.It spawned two Number 1 hits: the powerful, razor-sharp "Shout", and "Everbody Wants To Rule The World", a song which perfectly encapsulates the mood of the 1980s.There's plenty more greats here, though, such as the atmospheric "Mothers Talk" and the glimmering "Head Over Heels" (recently featured in Richard Kelly's cult hit film DONNIE DARKO).The apocalyptic "The Working Hour" is another gem, which features a great saxophone part played by Mel Collins and William Gregory.SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR is an album which truly is like no other.Don't let its commercial success fool you; from "Shout" to the ethereal "Listen" - complete with heavenly vocals - this is art, fueled by powerful lyrics and a turbulent, emotional sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the eighties, and Tears for Fears' best
"Songs from the Big Chair" is Tears for Fears at their finest.

Possibly the kitschiest band of the '80s (as Joy Division was for the '70s), Tears for Fears turned out a small treasury of well-crafted songs during their heyday and helped to define a genre that everybody recognizes, but nobody can name. "John Hughes movie pop" comes close, but somebody should find something more apt. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars No tears for Tears For Fears!
Tears For Fears was one of the hottest bands of the 80's. The band consisted of two men: Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best TFF collection to buy!
I recommend this collection because it has all of their great songs on it and there's not one that I don't like! I bought it because I wasn't really impressed with the 20th Century Masters collection. You should check this out and buy it before you decide on buying a cheap TFF compliation that can be easily found in a "clearance bin" in any record store!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice remastering butomits a few essentials songs
For the individual who just "likes" Adam and is not an Antmaniac this maks for a nifty purchase (as do a great deal from the desperate "Essential" series). However there are a couple of head-scratchers in terms of song selection and omissions from the collection. The inclusion of "Physical (You're So)" is a bit questionable seeing as "Cartrouble" (a classic catchy single featuring the debut of Marco) should have been neatly placed after "Zerox" and "Vive Le Rock" (a record company error made this should-have-been-hit single exactly that) should have been sequenced after "Apollo 9". However neither of these singles are included here and are somewhat important in presenting a complete, accurate and essential Ant collection.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's no "Antics in the Forbidden Zone"
I'm really not sure what the purpose of this Disc is, other than as an Adam Ant filler for those collectors who need to add more to their collection. This is a slightly scaled down version of the truly best of "Antics in the Forbidden Zone" which detailed Adam Ant's career up until the bombastic "Apollo 9" album."Essential" adds the 1990 single "Room at the Top" from "Manners & Physique" album and "Wonderful" from the 1995 "Wonderful" album. These two songs are not really worth the cost of admission and I think are probably the weakest songs on those two albums, anyway. And of course "Essential" ignores the unreleased 1993 album "Persuasion" which had some really good songs on it.If you want later period Adam Ant, "Manners" is really good and "Wonderful" is, well, less than wonderful, but still a worthwhile Adam Ant.If you want an introduction to Adam Ant, the chronologically catalogued "Antics" is great and a more complete collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Adam Ant lovers
This is truly the essential collection.I just wish that they had added S.E.X. to the collection as that is one of his best song. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars shaking my head in disappointment
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY (Six Times) did they fade out the end of the Fascination remix!!!!!???? This was one of the primary reasons I wanted this CD!The genius of that remix was WAY ahead of its time, and they RUINED IT!
4-0 out of 5 stars Human League...
Personally, I've always wanted an extended version of Human, as the regular single is under 4 minutes. The version of the song on this collection is 5:05.I do like it.I just wish it was 10 minutes longer.Guess I'll have to get software and figure how to extend it (or just loop it with RealPlayer V.10!).The rest of the mixes on this CD are also good.
2-0 out of 5 stars Virgin Dropped The ball...
This CD release was nothing short of a miracle for Human League fans who wanted the catalogue to finally be completed on a CD issue. The idea was to give fans the remixes and b-sides that were only available on deleted vinyl. The original announced CD had a very different track listing. All of these songs, except for You Remind Me of Gold were already available on CD. For anyone who will ask, The 12" version of The Sound of the Crowd was released on two CD compilations previously. Classic Alternatives Vol 1 and the other I can't rememeber. Anyway, the "remastered" sound leaves a lot to be desired here. There are pops and clicks that can be heard on both the extended version of Life on Your Own and on Non-stop. It sounded as if the source recording was vinyl. It's a shame because Caroline Records treats their Human League re-issues as a labor of love. Both of these songs appear on their re-issues of Dare and Hysteria, and the songs sound much better than on this CD. Also the beginning of the Don't You Want Me remix has very noticable analog hiss, though they did manage to keep the tempo correct (it was sped up on the Love & Dancing CD in order to mix it in with the previous song). The remix of Fascination has also been edited. Why this was done I don't know. It now fades out at the end...Also, the alternate version of Marianne, only available on the Australian vinyl version of Travelogue is nowhere to be seen on this compilation. The same can be said about the original (better) all synth version of I Love You Too Much, which can only be found on the Fascination EP on vinyl and cassette.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pop Rock band With A Unique Sound!
The Go Gos would have to be one of my favourite bands of the 1980's. This CD contains the unforgettable track "Alex The Seal". The last I heard Alex was performing at Waterworld in Florida. Belinda and the Go Gos Rock!

4-0 out of 5 stars Now I can listen to the Go-Gos
I was a metalhead in the 80s. This condition was caused by being a boy growing up in south Louisiana. If I had dared to admit to listening to a "girl New Wave band" I would likely have been beaten up. Now that I'm older and bigger I can readily admit I like them very much. The band was very musically tight, and knew how to write a catchy song. I'll admit that I like the "hits" better tnan the other album cuts, but overall a very listenable CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pop Punk of the1980s. Nice Abstract of The Go-Go's First 3 Albums.
The Go-Go's formed in 1978 and emerged from their ska punk roots to become goddesses of pop punk when "We Got the Beat" became an underground hit in 1980. The pop scene greeted The Go-Go's with a certain amount of surprise, it seemed, because the all-female band could play instruments and wrote most of their own songs. The contrast between their punk sensibility and their perky, poppy demeanor made for a curious, memorable image that suited the glossy cynicism of the 1980s."Go-Go's: Greatest" is a best-of album covering the band's chart-topping hey day in the 1980s. The 14 tracks represent the 3 albums The Go-Go's recorded before their breakup in 1985. The ladies' line-up on "Greatest" is: Charlotte Caffey, lead guitar and keyboards; Belinda Carlisle, lead vocals; Gina Schock, drums and percussion; Kathy Valentine, bass guitar, rhythm guitar, and backup vocals; and Jane Wiedlin, rhythm guitar and backup vocals.

Can't say enough good about this collection!
5-0 out of 5 stars Ah! Leah!
Okay, I love the song "Ah! Leah!" What an awesome song! The rest of the CD is okay, but that song is majorly cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oneof the best!

Editorial Review

In the decade of decadence, Duran Duran knew how to live the life. Itwas reflected in their videos (sailboats, silly white hats, tropical surroundings, grease-painted feral women) and garishly displayed in their public lifestyles. But if you can remove these connotations from the album that started it all, you'll be left with music that is anything but gaudy. For the most part, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars POUND FOR POUND THE BEST.
At a time when several pop/new wave records seemed to have little or no acutal musicianship, "Rio" showed up. This album has a sense of balance and dynamics that forces the listener to hang in there from beginning to end.Huge singles like "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Save a Prayer" fit seamlessly into a record that could have released any one of its tracks as a single. The production, while more sophisticated than the debut, has a clear rich tone which showcases the real talent this group had. (and still has)
4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great album, better than most music today...so what if it was popular?
Duran Duran gets a lot of crap by alternative/New Wave people as being a bunch of pretty boys from the UK who made good. I would prefer to listen to them (specifically this album) because it's damn good music. I love the song Hungry Like the Wolf, and I still play it to death 20 years after it was made. The title track and Save a Prayer are also fabulous songs too. If I had a chance to listen to Duran Duran or crappy indie rock from the 1990's, I'd still take these guys. And their videos were light years better than their contemporaries (and current "rock" stars). Go Simon, Nick, John, Andy, and Roger!
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally bought the Duran remasters and love them!
This is like manna from heaven! Most artists' fanbases would be drooling over the ORIGINAL LP being reissued, complete with original mix.I can't understand the negative reviews.Yeah, it's not the old US version - but this is in my mind what the band themselves originally wanted us to hear. It's incredible and parts sound like a different album."Hold Back the Rain" has always been my fave on this LP since I was 12 when it came out.I love this mix so much better and am really enjoying this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One more time...
I have watched this movie so many times, and it is still great. I love Guy Richie's creactivity. An all star cast mixed with a great plot and that sly under the door humor make all much better than your normal hit man comedy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Music
I mainly bought this to get the Mirwais - Disco Science track, but the whole cd is good.If you love the movie, you'll definately enjoy the cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works in so many circumstances!
What a great soundtrack! For me, the soundtrack is the make or break point in some movies. In Snatch, it just enhanced the coolness of the movie. Dennis Farina was magnificent, and the sound clips of him are great on the CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where Do I Start?
How do I even start? This is one of Oingo Boingo's best. It's classic!
5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANCE!
My very first impressions of Oingo Boingo came from songs like "Little Girls," "Only a Lad," and especially "Nasty Habits." I think this album, however, is one you have to be in the mood for to really appreciate. Usually Danny Elfman's music can put me in the mood, but this one is very much a single style, which is very 50s rock sounding, albeit new wave 80s at the same time. I think "Perfect System" (Track 2) is one of the most overlooked of Boingo's stuff that ought to have more attention. In the same vein is "Controller," both based on sort of crazy political ideas - reeks of "Manchurian Candidate" which I wouldn't put past Elfman, as he really likes the literary stuff ("Wake Up (It's 1984)," "No Spill Blood").
5-0 out of 5 stars No better way to start a legend.
Only A Lad is the second full album of Danny's that I bought, a couple of months after I first became a Boingoloid. At that point, I had already begun to realize that the Boingo fandom is quite unlike any other band-- the music is wilder than anything ever heard on the radio, the fans more devoted than even the most nutcase juggalos, and the pure insanity of Elfo is... well, otherwordly. To say the least.

Editorial Review

The '80s folk revival yielded a diversely talented generation, some reared on the aesthetic and ideology of punk, some on their '60s singer-songwriter predecessors. They were looking for the directness of expression and connection with audience that stripped acoustic music promised. Michelle Shocked built an audience through her strident activist messages and raw, almost naked songs; she had the sincerity that the audience craved. Despite the militant cover--in which a cop is seen choking a protesting Shocked--the record is memorable for its reveries of childhood, its simple sense of hope, and Shocked's minimalist guitar and hoarse, youthful voice. 5-0 out of 5 stars Laudible Effort Salutes Bygone Oratorio
Definitely liked this CD from the first listen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reissue, Bravo Michelle !
In this reissue, she added a whole CD worth of bonus material. Great material too, and all for a reasonable price. I think I listen to Disc #2 as much or more than Disc #1. It came in a cool box with new liner notes. All handwritten it appears. I wonder if she did the writing herself?
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Original talent...God This Woman is Talented!
I ordered this on a whim based on other reviews. What a great purchase, and what an addition to my music library. I sat on my porch here and savored each song...having lived in Texas, having been to the Paradiso in Amsterdam, having lived in Atlanta and been to the old (sigh) Metroplex (God I'm old)...having...well, you get the idea...in other words, this CD touched me, which doesn't happen often. Thank you Michelle for such a wonderful production. Keep up the good work, I'm planning on buying more an more of your music...you are truly talented. HIGHLY recommended! ... Read more
