2-0 out of 5 stars dismal
i like Damien Jurado's first two records and was moved by his gentle and simple way of telling a story through a good song; but this album fails to stir any emotion inside of me. the album seems lost and unfocused in a haze of directionless abandon. these tunes sound desperate and play out like unfisnished sketches of songs that any kid with a four-track and a guitar could have put to tape. a few tracks on "Ghost Of David" have some worth, but none really merit the puchase of this full length abum. a shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Real As it Gets
Damien Jurado has been one of my favorite artists since seeing him play bass and scream in Coolidge.I would never have guessed that this guy would go on to make the most beatiful folk music around.I have probably seen him play 20-25 times from when I lived in Seattle and was around when Pedro the Lion, Damien Jurado, Roadside Monument and other groups like that were playing little shows all of the time.He has never disappointed in his live shows.5-0 out of 5 stars damien quietly blows all other music out of the water...
I picked up my first Damien Jurado album in college after a certain boy put him on a mix tape for me...and you know what mix tapes can do to your heart....Anyway, Damien has a presence which will resonate in your mind long after you are done listening to him.He is eloquent, and soft, and sings from his gut...what more can you ask for?Every album he has ever made is worth buying, but Ghost of David is a great one to start with...and please take this on car trips with you,...I think that you will find yourself listening to it again and again trying to get more from each song. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So good...if you want it to be.
I was in Florida on vacation the day Kurt Cobain shot himself. I remember staring out into the ocean trying to understand why he would do such a thing. Later that night I saw the video for 'Cut Your Hair' and my world shifted ever so slightly. I bought this record on the recommendation of a friend who was an avid ministry fan. I'm not sure how or why he knew about it but I owe him big time. The thing is when I got this record I hated the sh*t out of it. It was terrible, the worst music ever, oh my god, my allowance for the year...WASTED. But somehow I kept listening and slowly it crept in between my synapses and has been blocking the flow of relevant thoughts ever since. When you listen to the music you feel filled with sad beams of sunlight. You are traveling across the desert with an ex-girlfriend to drop her off in a different city. But you are strangely at peace with this and you are angry in a fun way. You want to f*ck s*it up...melodically. Gold Soundz, Fillmore Jive, Elevate Me Slowly, Unfair, Range Life, and Silence Kit are all brilliant individually. The rest of the songs are essential to make the album whole. This is my favorite album of all time.

If you read the other reviews you'll see this album and band compared to various other bands and songwriters and it gets loaded with all the lazy journalism jargon(freak folk and psych-Americana).It is pretty derivative but not in the way that Devendra Banhardt is.At least his records are fun to listen to.This is a pretty average indie rock album and a fairly weak psych/folk/whatever album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Experimental and amazing
I was pretty floored by this record the second time I listened to it.I was initially into songs like I'll Be on the Water during the first listen, but once I listened to it again I started to pick up all the wonderful nuances and layered weird sounds that were in some of the more experimental songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars it must have been a cold winter
Fans of Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom might like this one. Songs of Green Pheasant is the work of Duncan Sumpner. This is a very lo-fi recording that sounds much like some trippy records of the past like Lansing-Drieden and The Langley School. The sounds of new weird America have touched those in Sheffield. Sumpner did these recordings three years ago, and sent them to a label, and it took a while to get back to him. The result is something very unique. Sort of reminds me of some muddle versions of some early Eyeless in Gaza stuff. This is another record to get into and dream about distant places. It is a good opportunity to use your brain. Damn those who are preying to a god that doesn't exist. Songs of Green Pheasant is truly brilliant. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic music
This album is fantastic, and despite previous comments, hrishikesh is quite captivating live.It is not his fault if he gets improperly booked in a larger venue containing plenty of impatient the snake the cross the crown fans who aren't familiar with his music.
3-0 out of 5 stars Horrible live concert...good studio album
I'd like to start out this review by saying that the One AM Radio is just one guy singing. Basically, he has little talent besides his beautiful voice. I saw him a few nights ago with Owen, The Quiet Life, William Elliot Whitmore, The Snake the Cross the Crown and he was an absolute disgrace compared to the other EXTREMELY talented bands (check out the quiet life and the snake the cross if you like some harder indie rock...whitmore if you like bluegrass, owen if you love acoustic). He had a computer with him that played his produced background music. He played a few chords on his guitar and then turned the volume up and down. He has a great voice- I will give him that- but DO NOT waste your money on a concert to see him. I would have easily said the concert was one of the best ever..but I can't because The One AM Radio serisouly brought down the quality of the show. If you listen to his live music with your eyes closed then it is a little better b/c you can't see the extreme lack of talent present with a laptop and guitar that is barely played. Basically, he makes a great studio album (best song- Buried Below, catchy and similiar to Death Cab with a Mike Kinsella style voice) but is a horrible performer.
5-0 out of 5 stars 10 years from now...
...i'll still expect to be listening to this album. This music is like a warm sweater, and every time I listen to it I find something else I like about it.It's meaningful music that never becomes overly sentimental. The kind of cd that sits well next to Kings of Convenience's "Quiet is the new loud" and REM's "Automatic for the People."You will not regret buying this album. ... It's hard to know what to make of Will Oldham, partly because he refuses ever to reveal his biography, partly because his music is opaque to the point of total blackness. With various Palace incarnations, Oldham has obsessed over lower than lo-fi quasi-country music, and his first full length solo album, continues with his raging sonic sermons of apocalypse, despair, evil, and sex.The sound moves slow as a 101-degree day in his native Louisville; the overall effect is troubling. 5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite oldham album
but not my favorite palace album. That would be There is No One. Anyway, I just spent too much time checking out the reviews for James Blunt, and was befuddled at how many people passionately love him, when he obviously isn't that good. I really think what's going on there is that people want him to be deep and a genius so they make him one-so they get to listen to "deep" music without having to be challenged in any way. I know music is personal, but Blunt is tripe. But here, with Mr. Oldham, I could understand how opinions could defer so widely. His music is difficult, and therefore when you like it, it is really a personal, intimate thing. I love this album, and maybe even if you don't you could understand how someone could, unlike Mr. Blunt's pablum.

2-0 out of 5 stars hmmm.
Maybe this is one of those albums that gets better over time after you have listened to it for a few times. I've tried, I've really tried.
5-0 out of 5 stars After it's open, it's unlimited!
At first, it may seem dingy, purposefully clumsy, lame. Occasionally rocking, but nothing special. Then the iris opens, and its perfection is revealed. I have long claimed to not be so crazy about Will Oldham -- "I like more rockin stuff, less affected stuff" -- but the truth is, I rarely listen to this album just once through anymore -- I am ALWAYS hitting play once it's over. You have to give it time, though. Bravo, gentlemen! Robert Arellano who plays guitar on this just published a novel with Akashic books. And David Pajo... oh, Pajo! ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars it's a fun cd
I normally don't listen to this type of weird electronic/piano/etc music, but I like Aqueduct when I need a change.
3-0 out of 5 stars bit of a letdown
The first, self-released Aqueduct album, Power Ballads, featured the two best songs on I Sold Gold (GnR & HeartDesign), but suffered from the same claustrophobia as this release: too limited range in subject matter, general tone, and the music itself grew repetitive, especially in terms of production.Dave can come up with really nice hooks, especially combining piano and vocal lines, but he usually stops there -- the big exception being "Growing Up w/ GnR," which actually builds towards a great release at the end. Most of the other songs establish a hook in the opening seconds and then ride that out, w/ some variation.
3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate Aqueduct
The ferocious retro artwork harks back to the 1980s, but the dreamy pop contained on this latest release from Aqueduct isn't another addition to the current angular new wave sound. While there is an odd 1980s throwback here and there on I Sold Gold, sole Aqueduct member David Terry generally creates a likeable off-kilter sound akin to the quirky music of New Zealand's Goodshirt. Hardcore Days And Softcore Nights has a generally dark undertone and a cool sequence of drum thrashing, while the lyrical configurations of the album take a turn for the better on Growing Up With GNR when Terry sings of lost love at the fragile age of 12 and `Axl Rose on the radio singing Sweet Child O' Mine'. Elsewhere Aqueduct takes on board influences of everyone from Ben Folds to The Flaming Lips, with Heart Design and Five Star Day both being piano driven and further mulling over old flames. Frantic (Roman Polanski Version) ditches the ivories in favour of detuned guitars and synthesisers, while Laundry Baskets contains a hint of Dinosaur Jr or Eels in lines such as `I've been livin' out of laundry baskets far too long' and `Every time I reach a new low the bottom drops out'. There's some good ideas on I Sold Gold, but generally they've either already been picked over by more accomplished acts or they simply need longer to gestate. For now though, this Aqueduct is adequate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Merritt's Best Album- Or One Of His Best, Anyway
Having all of Merritt's full length albums, I have to admit that none of them have ever touched me so close or lasted as long as this one has. The album is a perfect variety of synths, and each song sound so amazingly different from the next.
2-0 out of 5 stars This album bores me to laughter
The voices on these folks! The man sounds like a depressed child with a head cold, and the woman sounds like somebody dressed up in a mermaid cosume somewhere in Disney Land.I don't know what else to say.The instruments are too light and fluffy, mostly done by a machine, and the whole thing just sounds like a bad, cheesy eighties album.Sort of like Annie Lennox meets Captain Kangaroo.I know 80's rock is making a whacky come back, but guys, listen to the album again and try not to chuckle. It's pretty hard.

      3-0 out of 5 stars Mix-and-match-musicianship
Okkervil River has been one of my favorite bands of the decade thus far. However, this CD seems to be just the scrapings of a few miscellaneous songs, with a few fillers just to justify putting it to market. Two songs of note: "Another Radio Song," which has been floating around for a few years, and "No Key No Plan," the only new song that's really worth hearing on the piece. This isn't to say that this album is bad, it's still better than 75% of the music I've bought this year, but if this is indicative of the future direction of OR then I am disappointed. The new Shearwater album is amazing, though, and perhaps this OR release feels rushed and pieced together because the band has been concentrating on that instead.

      Editorial Review

Although Beulah usually gets lumped in with Elephant Six outfits like Neutral Milk Hotel or fellow California smartasses such as Pavement, the San Francisco band’s fourth album is more like a cross between the tart pop of New Pornographers and the studio-tan ambition of Wilco. As with the band’s previous albums of low-fi pop, singer-guitarist Miles Kurosky’s melodies are reliably sweet, but there’s a stronger undertow of melancholy to the lyrics and the arrangements are sometimes rougher, lesser accommodating. The keyboards of Pats Abernathy and Noel play a particularly prominent role, and so does the trumpet of Bill Swan. Oh, there’s still plenty of guitar from Kursosky and Swan--angular and agitated when it isn’t sweet as a pedal steel in heaven. And, rare among indie-rock rhythm sections, bassist Eli Crews and drummer Danny Sullivan actually know how to find and ride some interesting grooves. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to it over and over and over and over until you understand it
This is a beautiful and complicated album. Each song stands out and there are no introductory or gateway songs (as in The Coast is Never Clear). Even the songs that sound like some guy with his guitar at first turn out to be insanely complicated melodies with a thousand different levels and wonderfully deep meanings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beulah's last is at least a marvelous goodbye
Sadly, unless Miles Kurosky and the other members of Beulah decide to reform at some point, this is the last Beulah album that we are going to get.At least we have the consolation that the band left us with three exceedingly good albums.Critical opinion seems to divide over which of the three is their finest. If one prefers the horns and intricate use of strings and other instruments, one will tend to prefer WHEN YOUR HEARTSTRINGS BREAK and THE COAST IS NEVER CLEAR, probably with a nod towards the former. As much as I like those two albums, I prefer the slightly sparer sound of YOKO.Although I never find the arrangements on those two albums distracting or overwhelming (indeed, I find their arrangements to always be restrained and exceedingly apt, and definitely one of the highpoints of those two albums), I am at heart a minimalist and gravitate towards smaller line ups and fewer instruments. For me, less is always more.So on a purely personal level, YOKO is just naturally the kind of album that is more likely to appeal to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional album
Really, others here might diagram this album track by track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man, This Sucks...
Dude, what is this man? It's like, all happy and stuff. That's crap man. I'll admit, these guys used to kinda catchy, but now they sound like the Beach Boys molested by the Jesus And Mary Chains' Psychocandy. I mean, those guitars! They don't even do anything except play some chords again and again. And it keeps going and going. I mean, alright, I guess if you danced to it would be kinda fun. But real music is about feeling. There aren't any feelings on this record. It makes me all smiley, and I really don't like being smiley. There's so much pain out there, how can you just ignore it? Velocity Of Sound? I don't get it. It's too simple, it's too jolly, the lyrics don't mean anything. Okay, I'm done. Now where's that Ramones record...

It takes a very brave rock frontman to sing, "I am a happy yellow bumble bee/I fly around the flowers and trees." But Kevin Barnes is not an ordinary frontman. Of Montreal is not an ordinary band. And "The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy" is an extraordinary concept album, both whimsical and poignant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprise -- the melody sounds like mediocre, but acutually is creative !
At that time I want to buy Interpol' Turn on the Bright Lights, but it was sold out, then the clerk recommend me this album. It's awesome and became one of my favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars another good GbV record
though no one will ever confuse earthquake glue with bee thousand, there are moments here when you remember why you fell in love with this band in the first place. there are, however, problems. what's with that annoying sound all the way through i'll replace you with machines? does bob think my kind of soldier is a good enough lead-off track? why are kevin's drums almost inaudible? didn't he mine the whole "i want to sound like the who" thing pretty exhaustively with choreographed man of war? either way, i like this record and it's better than the following year's GbV swan song, half smiles of the decomposed. i just get a little sad listening to this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It!You'll Regret It.
I recently purchased this CD because I'd been hearing the song "Useless Inventions" on Little Steven's Underground Garage station, and I really liked it.But after purchasing the album and listening to it, I really wish I had never bought it."Useless Inventions" is the only good track on this CD.Everything else is just bland and boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent Lyrics... No Airplay
The Mountain Goats have created a wonderful song-cycle with "Nine Black Poppies." The brilliant "Cubs in Five" starts this EP rattling off a list of impossible occurrences( such as "The CanterburyTales" staying on the bestseller list for 27 weeks, findingintelligent life on the moon, and as the title suggests- the Chicago Cubswinning the World Series in five games) and then blasts into the choruswith-"...And I will love you again..." (another impossibleoccurrence)."Cubs in Five" is the most literate kiss-offbreakup song ever recorded. My favorite song on this EP is "Cubs inFive," but the other songs are all excellent. In "cheshireCounty," over a lazy acoustic guitar rhythm the words begin-"When the sun came up, I got up 'cause you were saying my namebackward in your sleep again..."As with most of the songs, the introdraws in the listener who can't help but be intrigued and anxious to findwhere the song will lead.Musically, this EPis mainly acoustic guitarand voice with the occasional bass or drum machine thrown in.Though thisEP never got within six blocks of the radio station in my town(or yoursprobably), it deserves to be heard and will reward with each listen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
well if you have an open mind you can really see the beauty this album has in it John is a genuis thanks to him the peppers are still around and rockin and is too me the Best guitarist going right now!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lets hope the new RHCP is at least half as good
First things first. John Frusciante is of course the guitarist for the RHCP, and if you're just getting into him you'll be surprised by this. It sounds nothing like latter day RHCP. Yes, its good. While RHCP reconvene to make a new album that hopefully is good, John Frusciante makes this, a superb album full of great songs. It sounds great, its raw and unproduced but this only adds to the music. 'A Doubt' is one of the finest songs Frusciante has ever written, with its unconventional style and brilliant vocal performance. John has really improved as a singer, and well, go on, just buy this album. It ain't By the Way, thats for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one is for Nick in South Africa
Nick, I was imediately compelled to respond to your review of this album and thoughts on John Frusciante and the impact he has had on your fresh mind of 15 years."At least once or twice during your adolescent years, you seem to lose hope. I know because I have".I am 24 years old and think I have past those "adolescent years" you speak of, and I still sometimes feel hopeless. But I always have music and other forms of art to fall back on to reinforce that hope; it will always be there for us.Like you, "To Record Only Water...." was the Frusciante album that I was first exposed to, through a close friend, and I haven't turned back since.Unlike you, I became a RHCP fan after I discovered John's solo efforts.I am responding to your post because of your age and location. It gives me even more hope that there are not only other JF fans out there who I consider peers, but one's of a different generation and country!Thank you Nick! And remember, "The sweet, isn't as sweet, without the sour" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I know you're out there
Phil Elvrum continues to cement his place among indie's elite with this release. It only contains--I think--five songs, but they blend together really well. The best thing to do with such an album is just listen to it.Put it in and let it play.It will grab you at some point in the first song and refuse to let go.Get inside the music and the lyrics and just explore. That's all the Microphones do, and that's all you will need/want to do with Mt. Eerie. It's an excellent starting point for this challenging band, and a great way to pass the misty mornings.

5-0 out of 5 stars epic in every sense
Allow me to begin by saying that Phil Elv(e)rum is a artistic genius. On top of that, he's a very likeable guy (I've had the honor of conversing with him through e-mail). He is my own personal hero - I own pretty close to everything he has ever released publicly (a sum of nearly 300 different songs of his in my library). This album is the final conclusion of The Microphones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always good
A few years ago Michael Gira did some folk music. Later he released some records by Devendra Banhart. Now he has a band of four Devendras. It is pretty interesting results. "Awake" is almost Beatlesque. That goes into the crazy Captain Beefheart jazz of "Moment." Some of the Akron stuff is folk music and some is psychedelic rock. "Raising The Sparks" is much like some cool Prog Rock. Gira covers a Dylan song "I Pity The Poor Immigrant." The song "The Provider" reminds me the most of The Swans. "One For Hope" is a really lovely sounding song. "Mother/Father" is really a new version of an old Swans songs. Gira makes it sound very tribal. "Come For My Woman" sounds like it could be in a Sergio Leone film. Gira has done a lot of recent interesting music in the past three years. Hopefully this is not overlooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars sad that imagination it fades because everyone must get paid...
the only thing "wrong" with this cd is that there are some strange breaks and inconsistencies: but that comes from any split project.and who needs another cd that is a coherent whole from beginning to end?let's have the edges...
4-0 out of 5 stars Darn Good/Waiting For More
So, a quickie album of sorts, split between Akron/Family and Akron/Family playing M Gira's backing band. The first 7 songs are from the Akrons and they surprised me.I'd already heard their debut album and wasn't blown away by it.I thought they were decent, but nothing truly spectacular for the genre they're in.But here, the sounds are much broader in scope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Of Montreal's 1st record is a saccharine pop treat
While most indie rock aficionados hail Of Montreal as one of the finest of the "second wave" of Elephant 6 bands, it is usually on the strength of their conceptual albums such as the much praised Gay Parade or the electro-sheen of the newer Satanic Panic in the Attic.Cherry Peel is a different animal altogether, though no less enthralling. While less experimental from both a songwriting and recording point of view, this decidedly lo-fi production offers catchy pop songs from start to finish. It's easily the most fun, most melodic CD this Athens, GA collective (well, mastermind Kevin Barnes for all intents and purposes) ever released.Imagine Weezer scrubbed squeaky clean with the Beatles influence cranked up to 11 and you have an idea of what this album is like.Another home run for the Elephant 6 collective and a good purchase for indie pop fans.
4-0 out of 5 stars Cherry red and in love
Of Montreal sprang into existance with their debut "Cherry Peel," but they might as well have called it "All You Need Is Love." It has cheery pop melodies and offbeat lyrics, but the most noticeable thing is the focus on love -- especially hearts-and-flowers, pounding-heart love.
4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful exposition on love and more
Of Montreal's first, and still their best, "Cherry Peel" is an indie pop delight like none other. Though parts of the album are weaker, and it winds down near the end, Kevin Barnes' frank writings on the meaning of love (especially the puppy love of crushes) and the band's flawless pop style makes up for their shortcomings. It is dissapointing that Of Montreal will probably never make an album on this subject again, but on the other hand they don't really need to. If any song has ever captured the meaning of brief love, it's "Baby" and if any song has ever got down exactly how it is to be unsure about another's feelings and thus having a hard time sorting out your own, it's "Don't Ask Me to Explain".Read more
