5-0 out of 5 stars great CD
I think that this is a really good buy for a dead milkmen fan. This CD is great, the dead milkmen live from the peak of there performace. I love the way that they change the lyrics and they get the crowd into it, almost makes you feel like you were there

4-0 out of 5 stars Very very good!
I didn't know what to expect when I purchased this CD. Having seen the DM live 3 times, I knew that their live show isn't exactly always sonically impressive.4-0 out of 5 stars For Dead Milkmen fans only
I like the Dead Milkmen, so I like this cd, but if you've never heard them, try their studio stuff first. This cd probably won't win over too many new fans. Try Beezlebubba, Bucky Fellini, or Richard, Not Dick or whatever it's called. (if you can find it) Anyway, back to THIS cd. It hassort of a raw production, but not so raw that it sounds completely bad. Some well known songs are performed like "Punk Rock Girl" and"Bitchin Camaro". This show was recorded during the Beelzebubbatour, I assume, because there are no songs that came out after that on thiscd. There is a hidden track at the end. You'll find a live version of"If I Had A Gun". If you're already a DM fan, this cd is for you.If you're not familiar, get a studio cd first. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Live Performances of all the Classics (but one).
`The Velvet Underground Live MCMXCIII (1993)' is a two CD set collected from performances at the Paris (France) L'Olympia Theater. From the response of the audience to the Velvet's performances, I think the myth that only about a thousand people ever actually listened to The Velvet Underground (but, the story goes, each and every one of those thousand started a band influenced by the Velvets.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy
If you are a fan, consider this: there are live versions of "The Gift" and "I Heard Her Call My Name" on this record. And they are both not only as good as the versions on White Light/White Heat, but were recorded on modern equipment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Their Best Live album !
I don't know why this album wasn't more popular than it was. I WAS glad to see that it charted in billboard magazine ( #180 ).This is their best live album ! I like it almost as much as their original studio albums. It was a great comback for them. I only wished they reunited and stayed for a while. I highly recommend this cd for any velvets fan old AND new. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If Only I Could Have Been There
As is the case with many an industrial metal band (who put the emphasis on the meal; see Rammstein and P.H.O.B.O.S.). Ministry's raw, straight ahead sound is best experienced in a live setting. For an experiment in scuhindustrial strength nihilism look no further than 'In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up', which shows Al Jorgensen and crew at their strongest and harshest. Each song on the album gains a depth and intensity that spurpasses that of their studio counterparts due, in part, toboth an enhanced bottom end the players involved (which include Nivek Ogre and Martin Atkins among others). Granted, the album itself does run a bit short (standing strong at six tracks, thirty some-odd minutes), but extended renditions of 'So What' and 'Stigmata' allow for a new and fantastic experience, making the length really not an issue. Despite the fact that it was released 16 years ago, it doesn't sound the least bit dated, and still stands strong as one of the most enjoyable live releases to come out of the 90s as well as Ministry's moment of absolute perfection.
5-0 out of 5 stars All live cd's should sound so good!Go buy this now!
The songs on this cd sounds even better than the originals, and the originals sound incredible!I love how Burning inside starts, the guitar teasing you until the drumsticks start clicking, counting down until the full power of that great song bores down on you!and when you hear Stigmata...I didn't think you could beat the version that's on the Land of Rape and Honey, but live?!?Every song sounds great, and the songs from Land and Mind are when Ministry was at it's peak (Psalm 69 was also great)
5-0 out of 5 stars Stronger than reason, stronger than lies...
Before Al Jourgensen became irrelevant and started spending all his time and energy shooting junk, he made this, an incredible album, and one of the best things ever to come out of the industrial genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jana's thoughts
This particular album is so awesome.I think the live recording adds to the life of the music.Eddie Vedder has such a distinct voice. He has his soft moments and then will be completely expressive with a screaming style of singing. It sounds so good and his voice can really attract one to the lyrics of his song.Mike McCready plays the guitar so naturally and with passion.I really love the lead guitar in the song "Alive" and "Yellow Ledbetter."Both of those songs tell a story and the guitar seems to take on the role of lead singer along with Eddie. The combination of the two is an awesome call and response technique. Most of their songs create an emotion. "Alive" is deep and really draws emotion once the meaning of the song is revealed.I guess I am drawn to "Yellow Ledbetter" because of Mike McCready. The lead guitar is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.I do not play the guitar, but that song really makes me wish that I could.Their music is simply a pleasure to listen to and just JAM.If I had to make a comparison of music that may be sort of the same, I would have to say Nirvanna because of the similarities in the grunge style.I have every CD they have made and now I am starting to purchase their albums in vinyl.

I think the album speaks for itself, therefore I will not comment on the bredth of the songs played or the energy you feel from the crowd and PJ (although I just did didn't I?).

4-0 out of 5 stars Live? Well, sort of...
This is listed here as a 'live' album. This should be clarified for potential buyers: this is not the 'live' album you are hoping/looking for. This is a collection of songs by the Pixies recorded at BBC Studios in the UK over the course of several years. Yes, the tracks appear to have been recorded live (most likely in one take), but otherwise any resemblance to a live album ends there. And besides, nowhere on the cd does ever use the actual word 'Live'. With that clarified, let's move on.
1-0 out of 5 stars Excuse me, but did you say "EXTRA TRACKS"????
The title of this CD mentions "EXTRA TRACKS", but the song listings are the same as the other PIXIES LIVE CD. They both have 15 songs listed, and are in the same order. I don't see any extra tracks here. Where are the extra tracks thou speakest of?

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
This is what I would call "classic" Kraftwerk, Kometenmelodie, etc, meaning their work before The Man Machine and Computer World. It's a very good album. It is recognizable as the song from the studio album, but has enough live improvisitation to make it interesting. My only complaint is that it isn't long enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Good CD
A short but very good recording of Kraftwerk in concert. There are a few pops and buzzes that in no way take away from the music.Other than that the sound of the disc is clear. The songs were played in a crisp, spirited, and professional manner. Kraftwerk obviously wanted to get them right.5-0 out of 5 stars Wish there was more
Well, a slice of live KW from their early period. The technical shortcomings of this recording are soon forgotten as the music takes you into the surreal world of Ralf and Florian. I always wondered how they did it live. Anyhow, after you've heard Autobahn and other albums from this period, get this album. The sound is actually quite good, very stark with no post-production so it's very honest. The performances are excellent, there is of course some improv and the versions differ from the originals enough to stand alone. Also, listening to this you can appreciate the fact that the audience was hearing and watching something extremely unique at the time, a live band playing totally electronic instruments. There is also an intimacy of the performance that is nicely captured on this recording, which doesn't seem to have any reference as to where/when it was recorded. The technical shortcomings are a bit of hiss, some hum, but I found that once they get rolling on a tune it's not that noticeable. Recommended for KW fans of any period. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Creative restlessness is not often rewarded in the arts marketplace; we want to know that you're the woman who does those paintings of pixies, or that gritty pop-punk act who sings songs about how parents really suck. And when we go to see you perform live, you better play your song like we heard it on the radio, the same way it sounds in our heads. Right? Eels leader Mark Oliver Everett, aka E, does not fit this profile in the slightest. He notoriously tours with wildly different variations on his perpetually mopey, low-key Eels. This disc captures E in a performance from his "With Strings" tour, playing a career-spanning sampler with a few covers while backed by two multi-instrumentalists and a string quartet. E's gruff Care Bear voice almost-soars atop ingenious and sparse arrangements throughout: strings, xylophone and singing saw on "Bus Stop Boxer"; bass, piano and strings on "Losing Streak." The only sore spot is how similarly-paced the twenty-two songs are, though fans will have no problem with that. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative Eels Tracks.....(Given the String Section Treatment!!!)
Mark Everett has never been the most straight forward of musicians, with him cutting an increasingly idiosyncratic path for himself, and although not considered a household name, he has certainly built up a cult following through a series of bittersweet, troubled and increasingly bleak albums, that have carved out a sort of niche market in the alternative pop/rock genre. But with this release Mark has taken the steps of bringing a stripped down version of his band, and augmenting the arrangements with a theatrical string section. So what this means it that although large sections of the "Blinking Lights and other Revelations" are present here. But there, are also popular tracks from previous albums ("Novocaine for the Soul", "It's a Motherf___", "Dirty Girl", "Poor Side of Town" "Bus Stop Boxer"), coupled with the occasional cover ("Michael Brown's - Pretty Ballerina" & "Bob Dylans - Girl from the north country").But here with the radically different band arrangement, that shuns mostly electric instrumentation for: Acoustic Guitar, melodica, celeste, lap steel, organs, piano & string sections....the music here takes on a wonderfully rusty and almost lo-fi feel, with the luxury of delicate strings that add a certain elegance, melody and lilting beauty to the songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best album of the year!!
I attended the Portland show of the 2006 "With Strings" tour last summer and this album is a faithful recording of what I heard. No disappointment here! If you like the Eels, you will love this album. However, be warned that the sound is more "raw" than their studio albums. This is not due to bad mastering as some have suggested, this is how they sounded in concert.
4-0 out of 5 stars More than just another live album
If you are just getting into the Eels for the first time, this is not the album for you. However, if you are already familiar with the Eels catalog and want to hear some unique takes on Eels classics, new songs and a couple of covers, then definitely this is something you should check into. The Eels recorded this album in NY on their "Eels with Strings" tour, which is essentially the tour in support of 2005's "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations."

4-0 out of 5 stars MORRISSEY At KROQ : nice
a quick run of three great tracks in the studio back in 1991. KROQ has always been a supporter of Moz and it's great to hear these live versions. "There's A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends" ditches the lonley piano for a decidedly more upbeat version and both "My Love Life" and "Sing Your Life" are performed well and are quite lovely. a nice little treat for fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars You know you want it.
If you haven't purchased this one yet, it's probably about time. You've heard these songs on the radio, the internet, possibly even on Johnny Carson. This is a classic performance on a decade old CD single, it's impossible to tell how much longer it will be available; and the CD sounds better than anything that you've taped or streamed from the Richard Blade interview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Morrissey with a bit of flavor
For years Morrissey had done most of his albums with studio musicians sort of giving every album a bit of freshness. I remember when word came out about Morrissey doing a few tracks at KROQ I stayed home from school so I could be one of the first to catch it. It was so much better then I had anticipated. Not only were the songs incredible they were done with some flavor. The sound of the stand up bass with the rockabilly twang of guitar backed Morrissey as he always should have been. Thus beggining his musical conquest with the boys in the band that went on to tour along with the somewhat bizzare femanist voice of Phrank. This is one album that should be held as a classic because you will never hear Morrissey like this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Knock Yer Socks Off Set - No overdubs used or needed!
These songs taken from 4 different shows in May of '84 show off the Cure with a terrific line-up that wasn't around for too long (even by Cure standards). M.V.P. Robert Smith is in fine form and his guitar is often massive, sometimes employing an effect that makes it sound like a jet taking off. Drummer Andy Anderson favors heavy-hitting beats and keeps everything very uptempo. Founding member Lol Tolhurst's role on keyboards, questionable as always, seems to be largely relegated to elongated notes, although they are often useful and effective. Multi-instrumentalist Porl Thompson rejoins the fold here, a super-talented guy who would go on to spend many years with the Cure. Abandoning his previous role as a control room wizard, Phil Thornally capably rounds out the quintet on bass.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE CURE AT THEIR EARLY 80'S PEAK
THIS IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN FOR ME, AT 16 IN 1984, WHEN THIS WAS RELEASED. I WASSEARCHING FOR NEW MUSIC, STUMBLED UPON THE CASSETTE VERSION ( MORE ABOUT THAT LATER ) OF "CONCERT" AND PLAYED IT TIL THE TAPE LITERALLY HISSED. COMPARING THE VERSIONS OF THE SONGS ON THIS CD TO THE STUDIO VERSIONS IS OFTEN LIKE NIGHT AND DAY.WHAT IS OFTEN MECHANICAL AND HEAVY SOUNDING ON RECORD, IS HERE ROLLICKING, AND YES, GROOVY, AT TIMES. TAKE FOR INSTANCE "CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES". THE ORIGINAL VERSION WAS SLOWER, PLODDING,FULL OF ANGST AND JUST A LITTLE TOO SERIOUS. THE LIVE VERSION HERE MAKES THE SONG AN ALMOST JOYOUS POP OCCASION. AND NO, THAT ISN'T AN ENTIRELY BAD THING. THE BAND HERE IS TOP NOTCH, AND STRIP THE SONGS DOWN TO THEIR BASICS. THE CURE HAD FINALLY GOTTEN A COMPETANT DRUMMER (POOR LOL JUST DIDN'T HAVE ONSTAGE "CHOPS" ) IN ANDY AnDERSON, AND HE IS LIKE THUNDER BEHIND THE KIT. ALL THE SONGS ( ESPECIALLY THE ONES THAT HAD USED WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A DRUM MACHINE ON RECORDS ) BENIFIT GREATLY FROM HIS SKILLS. MY ONE AND ONLY COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS CD IS THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE IT LONGER, BY THE INCLUSION OF THE ORIGINAL CASSETTE B-SDE CALLED "CURIOUSITY". FOR THE UNINITIATED,IT IS A COLLECTION OF THE CURE'S VERY EARLY, SOMETIMES MORE ESOTERIC MATERIAL, ALL OF IT LIVE, TAKEN FROM ROBERT SMITH'S PERSONAL TAPE COLLECTION. OVER THE YEARS, I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO FIND MOST OF IT ON THE INTERNET.BUT AN OFFICIAL RELEASE ON CD WOULD MAKE THIS "CONCERT" WHOLE, AT LEAST FOR ME.

4-0 out of 5 stars The real "Play Out"
For those that associate Cure live shows with limp, if faithful, reads of their later synth-heavy stuff, this disc should open your eyes. They play the hell out of these songs; and, this album really shows that underneath all the production on their studio stuff is a band made of rock-n-roll fans. This album is also great because it makes a compelling case for the quality of the album THE TOP (which is the tour from which this disc comes). They totally sell that material on this, and show why stuff like Give Me It and Shake Dog Shake are A-list early Cure material. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it looks
Samhain was much less poppy then the Misfits were, which is bad. The songs (such as I am Misery) have amazing beginings, but turn into crap. The comic is amazing but short, the booklets ok and the video isnt the best. The cds are kinda good (November Coming-Fire and Live are good) but the rest of the stuff is rubbish. Danzigs still the man and so is Damien. Misfits boxset is much better

5-0 out of 5 stars Danzig as I like to remember him
With some of the crap Danzig has put out in recent years, it was of great comfort to listen to his older more melodic material. This box set reminds me of why I got the Misfit/Samhain/Danzig tattoos in the first place. While Samhain was criminally neglected by the mainstream public, it's influence can be felt today in many different genres of music from Metal, Industrial and Punk. And Glenn can sure do the ballads.Who doesn't love "To Walk the Night"?My wife's first boyfriend copied the lyrics and presented them to her as his own. That's how old we are.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great collection
All together this is a great box set the video is great and so is the booklet also it comes with a cool comic. the only complaint i have is the lack of unreleased tracks such as the archangle with chimes an alternate versions ofnovembers fire, halloween 2 and some other later tracks. also the liner notes are great but i would like to see some notes from eerie von since he was there from start to finish. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid
I feel that negative reviews are almost always an exaggeration, and it is surely the case here.Jay Farrar is the alt-country love child people seem to love to hate. But they love to hate him because they just loved Son Volt (and Uncle Tupelo) so much. That's history folks. And face it, he's talented and has the voice that hundreds of men try to emulate. This album is certainly not a clone of Son Volt's, but he's not doing Son Volt stuff here. It's a solid album, and worth having in your collection.Listen for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a reviewer that grew up near Farrar
There are some brilliant reviews here, and some that completely miss the point.I grew up about ten minutes away from Farrar's hometown, and I really fear some reviewers cannot understand the context from which he writes.Imagine the "rust belt", where factories have closed, people have moved away, and sprawl has crept in.You have our hometown area. The song Cahokian, which another reviewer took to task, is especially poignant to anyone familiar with the area.He speaks of the mounds, one being a HUGE ceromonial mound built by native americans which still stands today. The other, a landfill, visible from the first mound, stands across from a motor sports racetrack. The fact that Farrar recognizes this and chooses to speak on it, I believe, shows the consciousness that makes me love his music. If you like this slant, you should really check out March "16-20, 1992".This album completely forshadowed Tupelo's split, with noticable "tweedy songs" and "farrar songs", with Farrar's being of the social consciousness ilk. Please, continue to check out Farrar's solo work, Trace and Wide Swing Tremolo (not a big fan of much else son volt), and any Tupelo you can get your hands on.I should also add, quickly, some favorite songs from S,S,& BL.Please pay attention to Medicine Hat, Six String Belief, and Greenwich Time. Thanks for your time!

2-0 out of 5 stars Please someone tell me where else I can find this song
I have heard this whole CD and it's nothing special. One song is very good and I do wish to have it. It is the first song, "Things don't have to be this way". I do want that song but don't want to have to pay for this very ordinary CD to get it. I have not been able to find where else it is so if someone knows I would sure appreciate you pointing me towards it. Thanks. ... Read more

'If you all expected that Metal Machine Music would have been the last surprise, just swallow it', Reed must have thought back then. He just strikes again by releasing a double album of live versions where, instead of performing (singing) his songs along with the very nice instrumental treatment they received from the band, he decided to simply speak most of the time. He criticises everything and everybody here, with no character/persona construction and no poses: it's simple Lou Read-himself, the man, and the many opinions he wants to share with you, like it or not. It's a really enjoyable experience for fans. The record gives the impression that you're there, in front of the man, sometimes laughing from his harsh words, sometimes wishing he would REALLY do your favourite song, sometimes imagining you're going back home to hear the definitive versions of the studio albums. But meanwhile you're travelling through the cover pictures and if it's your thing you'll like to spend this time inside of Lou's world. For casual listeners it can be a disappointment though. Begin elsewhere and then come check it later.

4-0 out of 5 stars "I Just Flew In From Miami F.L.A. and Boy Are My Arms Tired..."
If you're reading this review, you've already taken a ganders at the track listing. You probably think "wow, what a great set!My favorite VU and Lou Reed songs performed live!"This is all well and good, unless you plan on actually listening to the tracks.if you wanna do that, check out one of Lou's other 3,000 live albums instead. If you love Lou and want to take a double shot of Lou's attitude, have a few laughs, and hear him talk about whatever was on his mind, then you may enjoy this.I do.This is what the Velvet Underground would've sounded like if it was fronted by Larry David; at times it sounds like a Charles Bukowski performance, or a lecture delivered by Hunter Thompson at a University. Both these guys drew crowds who sometimes cared less about their writing and more about being around their infamous personalities and to hear their drunken ramblings. This album is like that; the music often takes a backseat to Lou's personality, and drunken ramblings. That being said, the music is still top notch, and if you're still interested in this live document after reading all the reviews, then by all means get it.Just know what you're getting yourself into.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
I put off getting this album for years, due to the bad rap it's gotten as a collection of drunken, rambling monologues. It is way better than that. It does contain some rambling monologues, notably in Sweet Jane (which is about half rambling and half music) and Walk on the Wild Side. (In the latter, Lou says he got so tired of it that he couldn't play it anymore, but now he can, and then he talks for 17 minutes rather than sing a word of it.) The reviewer "x" described the album very well ("It is like going to the zoo, only to walk by the Polar Bear exhibit to see that the animals have eaten the zookeepers.") I can listen to the real songs more often than the rambling ones, but the real songs are indispensable. "Street Hassle" is absolutely incendiary, and I am very fond of the thundering, mumbled "Leave Me Alone" which bears no resemblance to the studio version. The band was absolutely on fire at this show. I've seen Lou three times, all in relatively recent years. What I wouldn't give to have seen him on this tour.... (Also, despite some complaints about the sound quality, it sounded fine to me, and I am pretty picky.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bad Brains at full throttle
The Bad Brains: four rastas,ex-jazz-fusion musicians, turned into one of the most powerful and creative punk bands of all time. Some claim that they were the inventors of the Hardcore genre.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Originators
The originators of Hardcore Punk in 1979, come together in Amsterdam for 1987's live album recording. The music is played as fast and furious as ever as HR and the crew play classic after classic. Comprimised of material between '79 and '87, classics such as "Right Brigade", "Re-Ignition", "Coptic Times", and "Pay to Cum" are all on the same disc, and live at that. Hardcore never sounded better. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you missed 1998's Family Values tour featuring Incubus, Orgy, Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Rammstein, and Korn, fear not: 15 tracks from the aforementioned bands, plus "interludes," add up to well over an hour of neo-metal-angst-rap that can be enjoyed without venturing into a mosh pit. The CD is a cool deal in that it contains the best songs from each lineup, including radio hits such as Orgy's cover of New Order's "Blue Monday," Limp Bizkit's breakthrough version of George Michael's "Faith," and Rammstein's incendiary Germanic ode "Du Hast." Korn's medley of older material and singles from Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hahahahahaha!!
The Family Values Tour is a joke, just look at the bands on here:Korn, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, and Rammstein.NONE of them are any good, as they're all pathetic nu-metal s***.Only 12-year-olds would like this.
4-0 out of 5 stars Orgy blows the comp. away!
And that's very true.Orgy had the best set here.KoRn was decent, Rammstein should have had more tracks as should have Incubus, but it was nice to see Bizkit drop some nice tracks not included on their albums like 'Cambodia' and 'Jump Around'.Ice Cube, no matter what you think, held his own here and is serves us a worthy track selection.Too bad 'Family Values' don't come around no more but with Limp sucking now a dayz it would be pointless.Still, this is a solid album with great live performances...could have been better but then again, it's very rare you hit something perfect.
3-0 out of 5 stars decent
its decent but y is ice cube here he is the worst performer but korn ruled i dont like bizkit orgy was good rammestien was good but only one song dont like incubus ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very pretty mix and a couple of live treats.
The original version of the title track can be found on Amos's fifth solo release, "to venus and back."The version that appears here is a beautiful mix that heightens the effects on Amos's vocals and adds a line of lyrics and background vocals. The result is quite heavenly. The live tracks included are the same as those that previously appeared on the first part of the U.K. "glory of the 80's" singles.Just as the second disc of Amos's "to venus and back" album is a live collection of mostly band songs, this single offers a further look into Amos's live solo performances, played during "secretime" of her 1998 concert tour. The offerings here are the rarely played "Twinkle" and a gorgeous version of her stunning cover of Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat."What was unique about the "Concertina" single when it was first released wasthat it offered exclusive online access to the never-before-seen-in-the-U.S. video for her U.K. "glory of the 80's" single.Unfortunately, since Amos is no longer on Atlantic records, the company that put out her first six solo albums, the content has been removed.

5-0 out of 5 stars You're the fiercest calm I've been in...
The Concertina single from the album to Venus and Back is not disappointing in the least. The new Mix of "Concertina" takes out some instruments in a few different parts of the song. It doesn't detract from the original much and is pretty good. The live tracks are very nice indeed. Tori's cover of "Famous Blue Raincoat" is right up there with her "A Case of You" cover. Hearing this live makes it sound great and the piano is flawess. I am highly impressed with this live version. The other live song is "Twinkle" from Boys For Pele.Although it's kind of an odd song to put as a live B side it fits perfectly with "Blue Raincoat" and it pleasantly good. This single can be found cheaper on places like ebay and such, but it's a great single for Tori fans, new and old.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definite Purchase for the Tori Fan
This single contains the same alternate tracks as "The Glory of the 80s" Pt. 1 UK Import.Obviously, this US release is easier to find and for those fans concerned only with the obtaining of B-sides this single is a a required purchase.Read more

Editorial Review

You'd have to look long and hard to find a more unclassifiable artist than Diamanda Galas. Her mesmerizing voice sounds something like Tina Turner, something like Janis Joplin, and something like Jessye Norman. It's hard to pay attention to what she's actually singing at first; Galas's voice is that compelling, from the deep, heavy notes of "Iron Lady" to the high, shivering pitches of "The Thrill Is Gone." She takes everything from French writer Baudelaire's "Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars STILLLISTENING TO DIAMANDA
I wrote a review awhile back in 2001 and my view of this cd hasn't changed. I still very much enjoy this cd. Since then, I have bought her two other subsequent releases: "La Serpenta Canta", and oh I forgot the title of the other cd. Oh well, check this cd out; I'm sure Diamanda would appreciate it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Scary...
...I first heard of Diamanda Galas more than 15 years ago, and before her music I knew about her outspoken nature.I read in a magazine about how she wanted to f--- a man because she wanted one to know what it was like to be raped.Okay...a few years later at a conference about AIDS she proclaimed one of the big problems about the disease was she couldn't get laid easily anymore (though someone else on the panel said he'd be glad to oblige her).
5-0 out of 5 stars crystalline horror
When you've listened to Galas before, and felt chills down your spine from the cries on Vena Cava or Litanies of Satan, this will probably surprise you. Unmistakenly Galas, with her voice somewhat richer, deepened in musical texture, the songs nevertheless are sometimes actually beautiful to listen to, instead of little musical displays of horror. Both the recording and the music are, in want of a better word, clear. Dark sides are, of course, crucial to this clearness. ... Read more
