Editorial Review

Does a talent for writing catchy melodies have to come at the expense of "industrial cred"? Norway's Stephan Groth, a.k.a. Apoptygma Berzerk, has been challenging his core audience with that question over three albums and numerous singles. But the man behind such downright tuneful industrial-dance classics as "Non-Stop Violence," "Deep Red," and "Love Never Dies" makes it clear on Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I like it a lot!
I'm new to the whole Euro/Dance/Tecno thing...but "somehow" I stumbled onto Apoptygma Berzerk and I'm very glad I did.
5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
i have owned this cd for over 4 years and most of the songs still give me chills its so good

2-0 out of 5 stars Just fragments
This is an incredibly popular album so I'm going against the grain I guess, but after listening to it a few times I began to notice something odd... There are catchy melodies all over the place, excellent accomplished vocals, great beats, but ... no ... SONGS. It's like he had a lot of talent, sure, and a bunch of great ideas for PARTS of songs, but it just never gets to the point where the whole song comes together in one coherant unit. I realized that's why I always find this album kind of unsatisfying. In contrast, consider VNV nation's Empires or Project Pitchfork's Daimonion, to name just two examples. Those albums are replete with good solid songwriting. They start with an idea, which Apop has plenty of, then REALIZE it, which Apop never quite manages to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only one Reich only one Hanzel und Gretyl
My god brillant stuff
4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious pseudo-German Electro-Metal from Beyond
I've been heavily into industrial for almost 15 years now, but deep down inside there's still a wylde chylde buttrocker that rides barstools across the club on 80s night screaming along to Quiet Riot. So when I need a break from all the abstract powernoise and clubby electro / EBM that tends to be on constant rotation in my iTunes, I turn to bands like Hanzel und Gretyl.

From the moment the first song began, I loved this CD. Each song is incredible. The thing that I really love about this CD though, is how the songs work together. Listening to it from beginning to end, not only sounds good, but almost sounds better. This CD doesn't even compare to most modern music where some songs are good, and the rest are just mush. This CD is like one great song from beginning to end. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars in my book
I'm pretty new to Rotersand's music. "Welcome to Goodbye" is my first introduction to the band. Rotersand may not be VNV Nation or Apoptygma Berzerk but I thought "Welcome to Goodbye" was enjoyable. There definitely is a Pink Floyd element in the band's music especially in the vocals but for the most part Rotersand's music is your standard EBM. The production is perfect. It has a good live vibe to it. There are lots of goodhooks and good beats. Tracks like "Dare to Live" and "The Last Ship pt. 1" made me want to get up and dance. Unfortunately what plagues this album is repetition but then again repetition often plagues many electronic based music. "Exterminate Annihilate Destroy" gets pretty tiresome after a couple of minutes of listening to the obnoxious synthesized beats. The same can be said about "Almost Wasted" except the beats aren't so obnoxious. "Welcome to Goodbye" is good, not perfect but good. I have definitely heard better EBM cds than Rotersand's recent effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars Each track is a hit or miss
I bought this album based on the club hit, "exterminate, annihilate, destroy" and the song "dare to live". Both tracks are awsome in my opinion. The last ship pt1, storm were tracks that stood out to me... but the rest were just generic EBM tracks. Some people love it. Others hate it. I wasn't disappointed with my purchase, but it wasn't anything special either.
4-0 out of 5 stars Get your samples correct
FYI - the samples in "Extermiante-Annihilate-Destroy" are from DOCTOR WHO not RED DWARF.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must and a classic
This was the first Goth compilation I ever bought - I was at a little used record place in Boston and was drawn to it. I've used it for my own compilations and as a teaching tool to learn about the Dark at Heart. Excellent choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent compilation
Im probably considered a newbie to Goth and Darkwave, but I have found this compilation to have some really interesting and good tracks from a variety of artists. Artists I have not been exposed to yet.CD 3 is my favorite with many songs I liked. I recommend this release

4-0 out of 5 stars A good starter set, not for every fledgling batling.
This set was one of the first "Gothic" CD sets that I purchased, and I truly believe that it's an excellent sort of sampler to the different types of music that make up the Gothic music genre. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FUN WITH KNIVES IS VERY FUN INDEED
well my favorite tracks would have to be Decypher, The Dark Inside of Me, Slut, Psycho, Caught, and Speedball O.D. i believe that this is perhapsone of VAC's greatest albums ever. it is extremely dark and twisted and at the same time danceable. with various types of synths and melodic trancelike beats, prepare to travel into the mind of a serial killer.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Overused sampling and slightly FLA wannabee-ish
I bought Fun With Knives yesterday when I had not even heard anything by VAC, I'd heard they were good, and it was 10$... so I was like "what the hell" and went with it. I do not regret the decision, but I'm not overjoyed by it. The album is a very solid industrial album, bleak, deep, slightly dancy and overall very dark and angry. Fans of "The Downward Spiral"/"Broken" era Nine Inch Nails, "The Mind is a Terrible thing to Taste" era Ministry, Skinny Puppy or Front Line Assembly can not really go wrong here. Sadly, this is more similar to Front Line Assembly's Implode than basically anything, even other FLA albums. It is good, but takes the genre in no new directions, and considering the possibilities that electronica has, it is somewhat disapointing.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite industrial albums
I have been searching high and low for "Fun With Knives" for a couple of years now. A friend of mine introduced me to a couple of songs by VAC on some cds she burned for me and I immediately was hooked. It is rare for me to find a cd that I love immediately, "Fun With Knives" is one of those cds. I loved this cd the second "Decypher" blasted through my stereo's speakers. The album is heavily techno-influenced which made listening to the music much more pleasing to my ears. Bryan Erickson definitely has one wicked sense of humor. Just look at his lyrics like "Fun With Drugs" and "Sl*t". For Luxt fans, Anna sings lead vocals on the song "Sl*t" which is one of the standout tracks on this cd for me. The music at times did remind me of Front Line Assembly with the atmospheric samples but for the most part I thought the music had a distinct identity of its own. I read somewhere that Bryan Erickson wanted to create a more pop orientated track ala Delerium hence the song "Sl*t". As accessible as the song is, I didn't think it came anywhere close to Delerium's current music. That's just my POV. I love that song anyways. It is one of my personal favorite tracks on the cd. I just love Anna Luxt's seductive vocals. I think "Fun with Knives" is a good introduction to Velvet Acid Christ for anyone who is curious to hear their music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of their top 2 albums
"Edges of Twilight" being the other.Very underrated band where I'm from.Their Led Zeppelin influence shows heavily in their use of blues and Eastern music (Jim Morrison seems to be an influence the the lead singer, as well). They also have an industrial sort of edge, though nothing like NIN.They mix those together very well to form a sound that's unique.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Tea Party
I've noticed over the years since I first bought this CD, people have bad mouthed Tea Party to no end.I never understood why because this is the only album of their's that I have ever owned.. and come to think of it, it's quite odd I never bought another since I love this one so much - I'll blame it on the fact that I love this CD so much that I wouldn't want to ruin my view of Tea Party by listening to something of lesser quality.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE most-played album in my collection for the past 9 years
This album is brilliant.Tea Party is able to combine aggression with thoughtfulness, melody with metal's noise.I bought this cd after hearing "Temptation" once on my college radio station and it didn't disappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Film, Great Soundtrack
This is one of the best soundtracks ever put together, starts out with a nice remake of Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2) by Class Of '99. Not a big fan of Creed so go ahead and skip that song if ya dont care for them. Stay Young by Oasis, The Kids Aren't alright by Offspring and Medication by Garbage are some highlights but the best songs on the CD are Maybe Someday by Flick (Which wasnt even featured in the movie just added to the soundtrack). Neve- Its over now is such a great song and the nice "Helpless" played when the lovely Josh Hartnett makes his presence known in the movie. All in all a very nice soundtrack I listen to it all the time!!!!!!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't hit the spot
If your fans of Creed and the influx of alternative rock they brought with them then this is the soundtrack for you. With solid track by Stabbing Westward and Creed, not to mention Garbage and Neve this soundtrack sure does handle some heavy hitters, but thats not all it has...it also has some dead beats.Shawn Mullins bores, Crow doesn't fit and Class of '99, while turning out an impressive cover, gets tiresome by lending TWO tracks here instead of quiting while ahead. The Offspring hand over quality with "THE KIDS AREN'T ALRIGHT" while Soul Asylum neither impressess nor depressess with "SCHOOLS OUT".The only problem here is that with only 13 tracks you need to release 13 quality tracks and even though some tracks are better than others, none of them stand out like they should with the exception of Stabbing Westward, but every track of the Darkest Days album would have stood out.Pick this up if you're a fan of every track here, otherwise stay away.It just doesn't pack enough of a whallop to justify otherwise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Creed - I'm Eighteen
I can't comment about the the rest of the songs but Creed's rendition of I'm Eighteen by Alice Cooper is just awesome. I used to love the old song but, dare I say it Creed's version might just be better ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's hear it for Nine Inch Nails!
This CD single features remixes of songs from the first Nine Inch Nails album. It is the longest CD single I ever heard of, being 56 minutes long. The songs are good, but the mixes aren't really all that different from each other. There is an unlisted 11th track, which is a woman saying "Let's hear it for Nine Inch Nails! Whoo! It's good!"

1-0 out of 5 stars There is only one that is worse, and this is close
Historically speaking, Nine Inch Nails typically takes 5 YEARS between each album release, so when you are a Nine Inch Nails fan, you can get pretty desperate for other NIN material as you wait. You can get so desperate, mind you, that you purchase horrible remix albums. Almost every Nine Inch Nails remix album is mediocre, many of them borderline crappy, but even if you like the others (which in all fairness, often offer at least SOME tracks of merit or interest, occasionally having Rick Rubin, Photek, Coil, or other artists of recognition remixing) this single, loaded with remixes, has no good ones. There is not one good remix on this album. Not one worth hearing. They are almost not even remixes. Unlike later remix releases, that had new noises and sounds incorporated that could keep a remix interesting, this is almost like the people remixing these songs didn't even have the masters, and could only rearrange the song. Really, these aren't even remixes-- these are rearrangements, and they are HORRIBLE. If you are a collector, then by all means, waste your money, but if you just want more Nine Inch Nails music, there are way better remixe albums(Closer to God, Further Down the Spiral, or even the new one EVERY DAY IS EXACTLY THE SAME) out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars As always...but...
Trent is a master of music;as always...but,I didn't hear too much difference this time in the re-mix's.

Editorial Review

The best English rock & roll has always been made by art students; this sometimes-pretentious, always-engaging foursome is no exception. Throbbing Gristle's unprecedented alignment of collage, propaganda, and noise even spawned an entire genre. This 1978 full-length (originally the third release on the group's Industrial label) was their uncharacteristically accessible electro-pop album. It's survived rather well--of note are the pleasantly monotonous, noisy synth-pop of "What a Day," the wholly improvised two-tracks of "Discipline," and the playful, ambient "Exotica," a tribute to Martin Denny that prefigures hipster cocktail culture by two decades. The group wasn't only boundary-pushing, they had a sense of humor (easily glimpsed in the cover art) that's sorely lacking in the industrial music created since Throbbing Gristle's demise in the late '70s. 4-0 out of 5 stars Totally bizarre
I'm not sure whether I like or dislike this...the music is incredibly strange, it makes no sense really. Not what I expected from a band in the industrial genre. The album goes from sounding like 70's psychadelic ambient to on the verge of unlistenable noise on the last two (live?) tracks. "we need discepline in here!!" ...What the hell?
5-0 out of 5 stars we need some discipline in here...

5-0 out of 5 stars Upgrade from delerium to synaesthesia . . .
While fans of the band Delerium can rightly complain that it has lost much of its appeal by losing much of the instrumentalism found in its earlier works, rest assured that Synaesthesia recaptures much of this earlier imagination and builds upon it to such an extent that it is arguably better than early Delerium - although Ephemeral is a pure instrumental piece. All seven tracks on Ephemeral flow seemlessly together - and track three, Intelligence Dream, serves as the climax of the work by introducing a seemingly old New Order-ish bit of brilliance at around 4:20. It is unfortunate that at the time of this writing Amazon does not have any track samples, but these can be found elsewhere on the internet. While "delerium" can be defined as a temporary state of mental confusion and fluctuating consciousness, "synaesthesia" can be defined as the neurological mixing of the senses - it can be argued that one would prefer enhanced abilities in one of the senses than diminishing returns in all of the senses. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best from Synaesthesia thus far
This is one hard to find CD, finally I brought this album through an Amazon.com marketplace seller. And I am glad I did. This album is one of the best releases by Leeb & Peterson. As a long time fan of early Delerium, this album reminded me of Delerium's 'Semantic Spaces and 'Stone Tower' releases with its lite industrial beats and ambient sometimes dark synths mixed with tribal and natural sounds. There are 7 songs on this CD and all songs range from 8 mins to 11 mins in length, so the listener has time to take in each song and enjoy the sounds and the journey each separate song takes you down. Tracks 1 to 6 are remastered songs from other Synaesthesia CD's. Track 7 'Descartes' is a rare find a B-Side and is well worth the listen. I am very happy with this CD and its a wonderful journey into the inner sanctum of the mind and dreamscape.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must
This is a must for any industrial fan.I think I would have serious doubts in anyone who says they like industrial music who'd not respond to this release.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not The Best Choice For Newcomers
It's come to my attention from a Wikipedia article about the lawyer, Jack Thompson(He's a lawyer who is trying to fight against the videogame industry and wants to censor violent videogames), that an Amazon reviewer gave his book a 5 star rating during what JT called a bookstorming and that review was removed (They filled up the book with negative tags, photoshopped pictures, and 1 star reviews). The positive review was by a user called BushSupporter who appears to be against Skinny Puppy as well as videogames.Anyway, if you're here because you hate Jack Thompson and are curious about the band you may want to skip this CD unless you're already into harsh Industrial music.Don't get me wrong. It's an awesome piece of work but I don't feel it's going to appeal to first timers.Skinny Puppy made later releases that are a lot easier to swallow for first time listeners. Those releases are The Greater Wrong of the Right, The Process, and Rabies.Rabies being the least accessible of those three but it still has Al Jourgensen's guitars (the vocalist and guitar player from Ministry).

5-0 out of 5 stars Their First Awesome CD!
For the first few years in their career, Skinny Puppy released some fine material in the Industrial/EBM movement that was just getting bigger and bigger.Yet for me, Manipulate is the first SP album that began to prove that the band was here to stay.Manipulate easily proved that SP could do more things with loops, beats, and synths. It proved that they were evolving as a tight unit and had plenty to say to the masses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not their best
I've been an OOMPH! fan for about 2 years now and so far I've collected all of their albums except for the first two, which I'm still working on.It's quite interesting to see how this band has progressed over the years, from their early days as an EBM outfit to becoming one of the originators of the German industrial metal movement, later followed by such bands as Rammstein and Megaherz.Although Rammstein may be the biggest band of the genre, I honestly think OOMPH! should be the one selling out concerts worldwide - as I think their music is even catchier and would more likely appeal to a wider audience.
5-0 out of 5 stars develops over time
This was the first Oonmph! album I purchased, haing seen the "Augen Auf!" video online. My curiosity grew, and i purchased "Ego", "Plastik", and "Unrein". This album has develpoed much more than the mentioned albums in that the melodies are smoother, the harder pieces and chorus's seem to have matured more. My favorite piece would probably be "Der Strom" (the river).

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the movie...
But is that hard to believe? The soundtrack is actually very well put together and features a ton a great music.Supposedly none of the bands had seen the movie or the script when they recorded their songs for the album...which in itself seems a little far fetched since the first track, Filters remake of 'One', is referenced in the film (in the bar when David says "one is the lonliest number"...coincidence?I think not!).Regardless, this album is still top notch. The opening track by Filter is brilliant and serves as an introduction of sorts of what to expect...and that is that the little guy far superseeds the big acts.Groups like Soul Coughing and Ween serve up delightful tracks, dark and just perfect. The Cure does what they do best, but the bigger acts like Foo Fighters and The Cardigans don't really impress me.Tonic does well with 'Flower Man' which I really liked (beings that I was never really a Tonic fan) as does Sarah who is always on my favorite list....but what really shocked me was the way Bjork grew on me so fast.I've always been a sceptic on the Islandic wonder, but after listening to 'Hunter' with the lights turned down I'm a new believer.Unheard of bands like x make their mark, while Sting suffers misserably (and I generally love him) so pick it up and be prepared to be shocked for this rises above the sludge of a failed film and shines as a diamond in the rough.

1-0 out of 5 stars A plaid-clad joke
Bad, bad, bad. And I don't mean that in a good way. Bjork yodels her way (Iceland-style) through "Hunter". You have pomposity personified as Noel Gallagher sings "Teotihuacan". You have pure lethargy with Filter, Soul Coughing, X, and Tonic (not surprising, because these bands don't know what the words "mid-tempo" or "melody" mean). I don't even know who the f*ck Aswad is.Basically, all of the bands on this disc are a plaid-clad joke (except for The Cure). Really, they have to be. Any studio that wants to promote their movie would not include Wean on any soundtrack. I never liked Wean when people knew of them (noticed how I didn't say "when they were popular"), and I hate them more even now. If you don't know, The Inebriated Duo Formerly Known As Wean had a singer who sounded like a castrated munchkin member from the Lollipop Guild. I'm serious about that.
5-0 out of 5 stars X-files
OK first off I have to say... I was a big fan of the show back when it first started, and watched it almost religiously until the wrote David Duchnovy out of the script. The movie on the other hand... well, it was ok, not great but still pretty good. HOWEVER, the soundtrack was excellent. I'm one of those people that don't really care much for the boy bands and teeny-bopper music that you hear all the time on the radio. I like the more obscure songs that really speak to me, and this album is chock full of them. This is one of those "desert island" cd's that I just love. If nothing else, buy it used on here for a penny. It's a better way to spend your money than on one of those icky butterscotch or peppermint candies the next time you're standing in line at the supermarket. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I cant wait till this gets rereleased!!!
3/5 is a very harsh review score for me to give a KMFDM album, but once they rerelease it and do some ultra heavy remastering (they did a damn good job on the first 3), the 3/5 will turn into a 5/5.
5-0 out of 5 stars kmfdm have yet to let me down
as of now, i own 3 kmfdm albums. it surprises me how good this band actually is. i mean with just about every single one of their cds being out of print, it is kind of a large investment to purchase them. i currently have this one, nihil and hau ruck. they are all very good listens and never really get old. they are by far a metal band far above the other in a league of their own. i highly recommend this album to everyone. there is maybe one song that is just okay..that is the last one on the cd. while it is a shame these albums are hard to find, it keeps the trendy scene people away and makes kmfdm a delicacy. so that is a plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars KMFDM are Godlike!
If you ask me wich KMFDM is the best I would say either ww3,Angst, Nihil, or Xtort. Its so hard to choose between them that I would give a different answer every day of the week. Angst was the third Cd I bought of theirs. I would recommend anyone who is just getting into KMFDM to start here if you can find it. It has some of KMFDMs more popular songs. However There are a lot of underated songs on here that are just as good.

3-0 out of 5 stars How dark? Like some Skull-laden Train that got derailed halfway to hell.
Dark Side of the spoon was release by Ministry in 1999 and was their final record with Warner Brothers. Following the slower, more basic sounding Industrial album "Filth Pig" and coming before the recently released Anti-George W. Bush Concept albums "Houses of the Mole" and "Rio Blood Grande", this particular album was one of the bands least commercially successful albums to date. Despite the single "Bad Blood" which also received heavy acclaim after being on the Matrix soundtrack, Dark Side of the spoon quickly slipped through the cracks and was forgotten, and when it was remembered, it was segregated from the rest of Al Jourgenson's enigmatic, eccentric, and harsh sounding discography. I myself did purchase this album in 2000, only to eventually let it sit on the shelf and collect dust.
3-0 out of 5 stars "Dark" is a good description.
If the hotline of HELL had call waiting, this album would be on "repeat."

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Ministry album- very solid
Not as dismal or noisy as the previous "Filth Pig", Dark Side of the Spoon has a lot more groove and plenty of psychedlic hypnotic feel, just as much atmosphere as its predecessor. If you're one of the fans who loved Filth Pig, it's a good chance this album is for you. It's definitely the newer style of Ministry- different instrumental sounds and composition style, still very very good. The guitars and bass grind loudly, as opposed to the controlled distorted tone on "Mind", "Psalm" and "Land". The drums sound like REAL drums run through some distortion and booming reverb.

5-0 out of 5 stars DIJ Comes of Age with NADA!
Nada is an album that explodes with fresh ideas in the midst of some great dark `80's dance tracks. This is the last DIJ album to feature Patrick Legas and his influence is certainly felt throughout. The weakest tracks are the ones that feature his lead vocals but for the most part the album is great and the best early DIJ album available.Mixing eighties drum beats and influences that include WWII German Marches to eastern European traditional music to Gregorian Chant and of course punk and folk styles the sound is certainly unique. Using Douglas Pierce's booming yet contemplative voices, synthesizers, heavy drums, and some tape loops courtesy of their Current 93 connection this album will leave an impression on each listener and is a fantastic work of art.
5-0 out of 5 stars NADA!
Absolutely essential to anyone about to start thier collection of Death in June albums. This is the one you have heard in clubs, and it is a fantastic starting point to know what this band is all about.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lame.
This product can be easliy described by the title of my review, lame. First off, this isn't an official release from HIM's record company (BMG/RCA). There is no music on this CD, just interviews. There is nothing on this CD that you can't easliy find on the internet, including their official web sites. The only cool thing about this is the little poster it comes with.
