5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all the sides of one of rock's greatest bands...
For a greatest hits collection, I've rarely come across one thats as good as this. If your looking to get into them, start here, it gives you all things pumpkins. I never owned any of their stuff, so if your like me and want too get a taste of them, this is the best place to start IMO. This album basically goes through all the stages that the pumpkins went through in their career. Some fans prefer different era's of the band, but this collection has all of them on here. It goes from there early stuff to when they started experimenting with electronica on the last few albums. I personally like it all, and I can start the album and let it play all the way through. I really like the flow and pace of it. If your a big pumpkins fan, this album isn't for you since you have all the albums anyways, I wouldn't say that this adds anything you don't have (unless you buy the Limited edition that has a 2ndb-side disc..). This album is for those who don't own a pumpkins album, like I was prior to purchasing this.If you were like me, buy this album, it really does give you all aspects of the pumpkins. I can honestly say that since I've listened to this album many times, I have alot more respect for the Smashing Pumpkins, they truly are one of rocks greatest bands.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!!
I can tell you some of my favorite's are missing: Muzzle, I am One,Crestfallen, Try,Try,Try , Rocket. I know it dosn't sound like a lot but if they had put in all the greatest songs it would have gone like this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good...I'm getting more albums!
The Smashing Pumpkins are amazing.Really, they are.Back in the early nineties, when I was about 4 or 5 years old, my older brother used to listen to The Smashing Pumpkins. Now, about a dozen years later, I listened to the sample of "1979" and was blown away by a wave of wondrous nostalgia.

Interpol create literate, atmospheric, moody, trashy post-punk music that recalls '80s faves the Psychedelic Furs. And this is definitely a good thing. While most young bands are content to rhyme "make it" with "fake it," Interpol pens melodramatic tales of tortured and tortuous urban relationships that are truly refreshing. Like their peers the Strokes, they're bright, sophisticated, and meticulous enough to build stirring soundscapes. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album; never get tired of listening to it.
I bought this after hearing "Stella" on XM radio.I've had this for over 2 years and the songs never get old. It's a timeless sound and I always enjoy pulling it out and playing it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I will say this album is very good, but I like Antics better because of several "problems" with this album.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
The album begins with an amazing ethereal sounding song titled, "untitled."That song is very addicting to listen to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting to say the least...
Having bought(and loved)Final Straw, I decided to give When It's... a chance. Although this album is not as indie downbeat as Final Straw it's still an excellent album. There are some genuinely excellent songs on this like Making Enemies, Chased By I dont know what and One Night Is Not Enough, while simple but geniusly done songs like Black and Blue, Make Love To Me Forever and the title song work well. So, overall, a good but not great album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delusional Much??
How anyone on this fine planet of ours could consider this album anything but extraordinary simply baffles me! Gary and the boys have seriously come through with the goods on this album!
1-0 out of 5 stars Not good, not good, Danny
Simply put, Final Straw is great and this is not. It's rough and lacks depth. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Chan Marshall devised the Cat Power moniker in order to put a degree of separation between herself and the often-twisted individuals who inhabit her songs. Here, she takes another step back while also taking a step forward. As the album title indicates, these are covers of other people's songs. Yet she sings them with no less intensity than if they were her own. Mick Jagger may have snarled the definitive "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," but Marshall takes a different tack. She removes the chorus and returns it as elegant slow blues. The Velvet Underground's "I Found a Reason" becomes a near-wordless cry. She relies only on her sufficient guitar picking and likeably amateurish piano tinkling, creating an isolated web not unlike that of Neil Young at his most deserted. Most appropriately, she covers "Red Apples" by Smog, whom she resembles in approach. Obscure (traditional and early) Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, and Michael Hurley tunes complement the bruised but not buried surroundings. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars She can't play em, but she can sure sing em
If you've been listening to the Cat Power album, The Greatest, you'll know that Chan Marshall makes a superb blues singer. The Covers Record, a likable collection of cover songs recorded in the late 1990s, serves as a nice introduction to Marshall's blues/folk singing style. There is no backup band on this stripped down album. Only Marshall's voice and one other instrument per song. Spare, but it gets the job done.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best way to do a cover
This album is very intriguing to me because i have not heard any Cat Power that i really like. This album gives me hope for the artist. Each cover is done in a very simplistic way where the music sounds almost nothing like the original song (except "Sea of Love bears a resemblance), and she even rearranges the lyrics and leaves parts out. This is very unique because most people do covers as close to the originals as possible, but that is boring in my opinion and all the listener does is compare it to the original, but these are unique to the original so it makes it its own song. The songs are all performed by just her and mostly are either piano or very simply guitar, but it gives it a real slow folky sound that in my mind is beautiful. I think the best song is "Naked if i want to" but i did buy the album becasue i heard "I found a reason", but there is not one bad track on the album. So check it out.

After more than a year spent on the road behind their breakthrough self-titled debut--just how many times can Alex Kapranos sing "Take Me Out" without getting his skinny tie into a knot, anyway?--you might expect the members of Franz Ferdinand to feel a little frayed around the edges. 5-0 out of 5 stars virtuous among us, walk among us.....
I have to admit, I REALLY like this album.I don't own the first album yet, but I can't imagine how it can be much better than this.It took me three tries to get fully embroiled in this album.Once that happened I have been playing it non-stop.There is definitely a punk base to all their songs, but there's something about the pace of their music (ever changing, pulsatile and jagged, then smooth...) that keeps you imbalanced yet wanting more.I can't wait to try the first album.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much better!
Although I'll admit I like the eponymous album a little better, I find this album a breath of fresh air to my somewhat-jaded soul.I've seen FF on SNL and Austin City Limits; the lyrics blend very well with the music, and there's enough of the unexpected to keep me entertained.I look forward to hearing a lot more from these guys!

5-0 out of 5 stars So much better
This album is amazing. The first 7 tracks are all good, and then there is a mix amongst the last half. To think of the career of Franz Ferdinand reminds me now of the path the Cure took with Boys Don't Cry. There is a great amount of structure to each song, and nothing beats the 3-4 hits such as This Boy and Walk Away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He's All Grown Up
This is Beck's coming of age album."Loser" was a single that was designed from the bottom up to be a hit single and "Mellow Gold" landed Beck right smack center of mainstream pop culture for an entire generation. His earlier recordings, featured in an album entitled "One Foot In The Grave," were evidence enough of his musical genius.
4-0 out of 5 stars After the Turntables...
Beck is an original, but always diverse artist. After MELLOW GOLD and ODELAY, there was something else that was needed from him. MUTATIONS is the missing peice, now that Sea Change is said and done. Mutations may not be for the casual "Loser" or "Where it's at" fan, but if you find something else to Beck's music other than the surface and the singles, than MUTATIONS could be a valuable listen. It's more laid back, not so rough around the edges, and not so distorted to the listener. But what "Where it's at" did for Odelay, the haunting "Nobody's Fault But My Own" goes beyond for MUTATIONS. There are some great songs and although not as catchy as his singles, and even though you could listen to "Nobody's Fault" and "Tropicalia" by themselves; there is more in the sum of the parts than in the previous records and you can respect the album as a whole, which certainly says something.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite Beck cd
Why is this my favorite Beck cd?It is introspective, but not too self centered. There is humor here. There is the layering and texturing of sounds that Mr Hanson is so meticulous with. There is excellent music here. There is A Bottle of Blues here. But remember, no matter what I say or do that its nobody's fault but my own. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The coolest, period.
12 years have gone by, and still no one has made an album as cool as Mellow Gold.No one.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Beck CD
Combine the best of Beck's quirky lyrics that are damn funny, insightful, and flow fast and furious, with his best ballads filled with a tension that draws you in everytime, and you get his best rock with an energy that pummels you with melodies both brutal and catchy. The CD never lets you escape its world. This masterpiece may get a few songs in the future that match its brilliance, but his debut is one of the best CD's ever.If you enjoy music this CD must be in your collection.Recommended without question.

While I am a Beck devotee, I'd have to say that if given only one of his albums to hear, this would be it.

Torn and frayed, the voice of Lucero singer Ben Nichols epitomizes a band that spends half it's time on the highway driving to the next gig. But judging by the fun the Memphis four-piece appears to be having on its fifth album, that road may go on forever. Produced by David Lowry (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker), the record draws a parallel with its 2005 release Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
This is an awesome album. The vocals have an almost Springsteen sound. The lyrics are so powerful and heartfelt. "What else would you have me be?" is one of the best songs on the album, and "San Francisco" is my personal favorite. I recommend this album to anyone who can appreciate good, fresh music.

3-0 out of 5 stars HEY KIDS - BE THE FIRST ON YOUR BLOCK!
Malvina Reynolds'"Little Boxes" is indeed an older song. Still not funny to the people of Daly City, who DO live in boxes that are red, green, yellow and purple. When you become a doddering old grandpa trying to explain the significance of NIRVANA's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and your grandkids are staring back blankly, you'll come to understand the respect that is shown here for a song that ripped the flesh off the mindless masses of the 1950's - which are trying to re-assert themselves today (read any newspaper lately?). Aside from Roy Zimmerman, there are no satirists working today that have the bite and charm of Malvina. Her song about the mouse that f***cked up the computer was 40 years ahead of its time. Let's talk, after you put on a few more years!

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrificlly original and slightly odd music from a terrificlly original and slightly odd show.
I rented the first season of Showtime's "Weeds" on a whim this past weekend.I had heard good things and the show featured an intriguing and fresh concept as well as a talented, diverse and funny cast.My gamble paid off as I quickly breezed through the entire series and found I had discovered a great show.Besides the aforementioned assets, the other thing that struck me about "Weeds" was its eclectic mix of terrific music. Some of them are odd little numbers, all of them though display the same subversive wit and in-your-face, literal lyrics that the show's writing itself does.My biggest (and maybe only) complaint about the show and its soundtrack is the horrible theme song, "Little Boxes."Yes, I get why it is appropriate and used in the show, and I also understand that the sheer oddity in which it is performed is why many people will like it, or at least find it curiously entertaining. But to these ears it is an utter chore to endure during the opening credits, much less in it's extended form here.I'd compare it to nails on a chalkboard, but that would be an insult to both that person's nails and the chalkboard.Other than that song though, this is a terrific, eclectic mix album. It may get old listen after listen after listen.I'd wager most would agree, you have to be in the mood for many of the songs included here, and there isn't really a "typical" song, like you'd hear on top 40 radio (a refreshing, good thing in my book) in the bunch. But as an album to pull out now and then, or to just appreciate some dry, witty, poetry and prose style lyrics (se "Wacky Tobacky" and "Satan, Lend Me a Dollar" for two big examples), this album might just be some sort of masterpiece. Like the series, this album is a true original - and in this day and age (in both music and television) that is a compliment of the tallest order.

4-0 out of 5 stars Weeds Soundtrack
An amazing series and an amazing soundtrack. My only gripe is that it somehow manages to avoid including Kava Kava's 'Don't Stop the Music' from episode 1 which I had to track down on itunes. That said Ganja Babe by Michael Franti and Satan Lend Me A Dollar more than make up for this oversight. How I love that track! More series should take notice and go for the obscure KCRW end of things. Here's hoping theres a second series soon ... Read more

For their latest, Akron, Ohio duo The Black Keys have brought forth an EP of six songs by Junior Kimbrough. This is no mere dalliance; the late elder Mississippi blues musician was a powerful influence on guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Their three previous albums, full of dusty grooves and simple but impassioned dynamics, would have found strong rapport with Kimbrough, who unfortunately died before they could ever meet. However, his widow, Mildred gives her passionate endorsement for these performances in the form of a short phone message that appears at the end of the disc. Among the highpoints is "Meet Me in the City," which positively shimmers as the plaintive vocal soars over a virato-ed guitar. The Black Keys, besides paying their heartfelt respects, also demonstrate the breadth and durability of Kimbrough's music. Read more

OK, well I don't normally write Amazon reviews but this one needs it. OK, first off I am a Black Keys fan, although I only own their debut The Big Come Up. I really enjoy that album. This is a brilliant release. I have been itching for a new Black Keys release since getting a hold of The Rubber Factory and this EP is every bit as satisfying(if not more so) than a fullLP of new original Keys material.

I love every Blue October song. They repeatedly impress me.I suggest, however, that you look at the "Argue With a Tree" album. Many of the songs on that album will repeat here (although in live format on the Argue with a Tree album).Their are some differences between that album and this album that make it worthwhile to have both, but some people may not want to pay to have a lot of songs repeated.Check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue October is amazing!
If you like their other stuff, you'll love this too, still a great variety of music styles, just a little more on the serious side as far as lyrics go, but still great to listen to over and over again!

This is an all around good band with an individual sound. I'm not saying they sound like they've been locked in a box with no influences and they're going to revolutionize the industry, but they do rock out.If you ever get a chance to see them play live, do, because they're all about the music.music is easy to get your hands on but long term play music is another story.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a Continuing Music Revolution
The late 90s/early 00s have brought a stream of a few unusually talented "garage rock" bands. These bands generally use lo-fi recording equipment as opposed to making everything digital. The rawness of sound is preserved and making music for music's sake is emphasized, as opposed to commercial fame alone. Mainstream music still consists of mass-produced pop, rap, and hip-hop for the most part, however unfortunate that may be. However, there are times when genuinely good bands are able to slip through, on to the radio and hopefully are able to attract the attention of enough people in order to sell albums and concert tickets. The Strokes happened to debut at the right time.
5-0 out of 5 stars There both great but...
First of all let me just say this: "New York City Cops" is way better than "When It Started".
4-0 out of 5 stars Is this it? Why yes it is.
I had to listen to this album a few times before I started to like it a lot, but as of now I'd say it's a very well put-together CD. The Strokes are a fairly unique band it seems, often having distinctive traits like a subtle effect applied to the vocals, electronic drum beats, and making their guitars sound like they do in the beginning of "Someday" (no other band that I know of has guitars that sound like that). Although I'm much fonder of The Strokes' work on "First Impressions of Earth", this album as well as "Room On Fire" both have an admirably mild intensity of rock which allows one to enjoy the simple components of the melodies as you cruise from song to song. It's certainly not mild enough to be called peaceful, however, since many of the tracks have loud vocals, prominent guitars, and the occasional swear word, but is good for when you're not in the mood for headbanging types of CDs. The Strokes are a great alternative band with plenty of good jams to offer, and this album will likely show you that if thou givest it a chance. I would give Is This It four stars and would highly recommend the songs on here "Hard to Explain", and "Trying Your Luck". ... Read more

    Editorial Review

While comparisons to nerd-rock dandies Weezer are probably inevitable for the fabulously named All-American Rejects, discerning listeners will note that where the cheeky lyrics about painfully awkward love end, the group's rhythmic force picks up, positioning the Oklahoma crew more as a geeky Green Day than the above-named preppy pop dabblers. No shame in that--on their major label debut, the All-American Rejects marry punk and pop with a clear sense of purpose and no particular loyalty to either form, cherry-picking the best of each and arriving at a spiky, effervescent middle ground. Singer Tyson Ritter is especially convincing in his role as hapless lover. But on tracks like the muscular "Too Far Gone" and the vaguely orchestral "The Last Song," Ritter's comrades drive the whole shebang home with instrumental freight. And you'd have to be pretty hard-hearted not to find yourself echoing the sing-singy strains of "Swing Swing" and "My Paper Heart." Fans of ironic pop--Box Car Racer, Fountains of Wayne, and their ilk--get crackin'. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best bands of all time.
I never really was into punk music too much. I thought it was too much screaming, and not enough instrumentation. THen, I discovered Flogging Molly, one of the greatest things to ever happen. I listened to Drunken Lullabies, and was immedietely hooked on this band. THis is an amazing CD that truly deserves recognition. This was the first Flogging Molly CD I listened to, and got me completely hooked on this Irish/Folksy punk band.
5-0 out of 5 stars buy it!!!
My review comes with certain disdain for punk music and in my cd collection the only "punk" I own is Dead Kennedy's. My girlfriend bought this cd one day And it ripped my skull open. My favorite type of music is folk and/or bluegrass and this cd, in my humble opinion, is a cross between them two generes mixed with a dash of tasteful punk rock fury. The lyrics are as excellent as the music so pseudo-folk fans like myself can find gold here with this cd.....its a surefire CLASSIC! I seen them live in columbus recently and they brought the city down!!

My first experience with Flogging Molly was actually in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, which featured "Drunken Lullabies" on the playlist. I heard the banjo intro and actually started laughing, but by the end of the song I was shaking my fist to the chorus. That was about 2 years ago. I bought this CD finally on St. Patrick's Day this year, and I was singing the songs with friends while consuming copious amounts of Killian's Irish Red. I absolutely love this album. So full of emotion and balls at the same time, this album is truly a masterpiece. The songs that I particularly loved are Drunken Lullabies, What's Left Of The Flag, If I Ever Leave This World Alive, Rebels Of the Sacred Heart, Death Valley Queen, The Rare Ould Times, and The Son Never Shines(On Closed Doors). This was my first adventure into Flogging Molly, so when I buy "Within A Mile Of Home" and "Swagger", they may not hold that special place in my green, white, and orange heart that "Drunken Lullabies" did. ... Editorial Review

Failing students have had such an influential role in shaping rock & roll that it's easy to give the bookworm segment short shrift. Witness the vital contributions from the likes of Ray Davies, the Zombies, and Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Magnum--the kind of smartypants songwriters with whom the Decemberists' Colin Meloy is often compared. The second full-length CD from Portland, Oregon's Decemberists certainly posits Meloy near the top of the current crop of literate indie rockers. Meloy is the brother of author Maile Meloy and a fellow whom one concludes has his own well-worn library card. Eschewing conventional pop-song subject matter, he delves deep into the past for his narratives and even his lexicon, witness "Shanty for the Arethusa," the high-seas opener, and "The Chimbley Sweep," which recalls the Zombies' similarly dark-hued "Butcher's Tale." Though the subject matter is frequently dire and the approach is lyrically erudite, one shouldn't conclude that listening to Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Exotic Shanty Tunes and a Little Thing Called "TRUST"
I'll confess to having been a little trepidatious in giving HER MAJESTY a spin. After having heard the glorious success of CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS, this second Decemberists' disc seemed ripe for a sophomore jinx. And after listening to the lead track, the almost willfully obtuse "Shanty for the Arethusa," I was not encouraged.
4-0 out of 5 stars Your day will come, indeed
Ah, to soar with the whirlwind love affair that is a Decemberists album... it's certainly something else. Indie to the last accordion, Colin Meloy and his motley band of maudlin musicians set out to top their phenomenal CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS - without success, I'm afraid, but that doesn't mean that this isn't worth a listen every bit as much as its predecessor is, because it is! This album marks the milestone of that nail-biter that is the sophomore record - will it slump? Impale itself on the swords of music critics everywhere, wither away and die in the back of the CD racks at Sam Goody? Or will it shine? Actually, HER MAJESTY is my beacon at sea.
5-0 out of 5 stars To all the people who bash this record...
Aren't we all but the sums of our influences? Not listening to these guys because Neutral Milk Hotel "already did it" is stupid. You might as well not listen to Willie Nelson because Johnny Cash "already did it."

It was only a matter of time before SpongeBob Squarepants became a star big enough to pull off a concept album. Where so many other megawatt celebrities, be they living and land-based or fictional and sea-dwelling, can get all high-minded and grand when cobbling together a theme for their music, though, our man Sponge proves he's as humble and porous as ever on Read more
