4-0 out of 5 stars I need more Death Cab!!!
What a joy it is to be turned on or to discover music from an artist you're hearing for the first time. I literally stumbled onto Death Cab For Cutie, just passing time in an FYE. I picked up "Something About Airplanes" and thought I'd give a random listen. Needless to say, the incredible melodies, and compelling lyrical content immediately got me open. DCFC bears a strong resemblance to another favorite band of mine, Built To Spill. Lead singer Ben Gibbard's delivery is almost dead on for BTS's Doug Martsch's wailing, melancholy tone. That's a good thing to me, as the same things that drew me in to BTS also seemed to have me ready to expand the Death Cab collection to include their other releases. But S.A.A is a great place to start if you're new to this band like me, "Bend To Squares", "Champagne From A Paper Cup", and "Amputations" are all perfect examples of indy rock done right. The titles of the songs are something else. (The Face That Launched 1000 S****??) I've heard from a lot of DCFC fans who say that this isn't even close to their best album. (Plans was mentioned a lot) If that's the case, my pockets might be in real trouble. Looking forward to the next time they're in Philly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall review of Death Cab For Cutie
This style of music is what I have been looking for my entire life, I just haven't known. This band has brought something to the table that I really enjoy. The very first sample I heard of Ben Gibbard was, "Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in". That barely audible tune that I heard while off the coast of Africa is what set it off. I searched and searched and now have almost all of their CDs. I Love Plans, it's an amazing CD. Translantisicm trails it, but not by much. I am now listening to Something About Airplanes. I take each CD one at a time. I will listen to only one CD, over and over until I am familiar with all of the tracks, it is then that I decide on what I think about the CD, I sort of invest time into each CD. I'm still working on "Airplanes". It has it's ups and downs, while the other two I mentioned are constant ups. Of course all reviews are opinions, so give all of Death Cab's albums a try to see what you think. I look forward finishing "Airplanes" and starting with the next.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding album
I will say right now that this is one of the best-sounding albums you will ever hear.Listen to the last minute of Behind the Drapes, as an example (some clarity is sacrificed for an overwhelming wall of sound, a good choice). I want Rich Costey to produce my album (he gets the production credit in the liner notes).
5-0 out of 5 stars obscenely underrated
how these danes aren't better known outside their homeland and the UK is incredible. i first heard 'frengers' a few years back after a friend told me about them.i 'acquired' a copy and from the first note i was sold: this is an amazing band.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an album to top my "Top 10 List"
"Frengers", by the Danish band Mew, has to be one of the most emotinal, passionate, and exciting albums I have ever heard.I have never heard a voice like this before.I'm not usually into the high-pitched vocals, but this is an exception.I heard "Snow Brigade" while watching a Flash video, and I just had to check out their other songs.I previewed the album on their website, and I could not believe such music existed.Ths is one of the few albums where I can listen to the entire album the whole way through with out skipping a song.So with powerful arrangements from the band, and beautiful vocals, you get results like this.Album of the year for me, even though it was released 2003. ... Editorial Review

Here we have a flawed but interesting introduction to the songs and recordings of one of the twentieth century’s great, maudlin pop musicians, Texas-based Daniel Johnston. This double CD has a pack of alt-rock superstars--among them Beck, Tom Waits, Vic Chesnutt, Bright Eyes and Calvin Johnson--tackling Johnston’s idiosyncratic and visionary songs, while the other disc has the originals, in the same order. With the exception of TV on the Radio’s Ubu-ish take on "Walking the Cow" and Waits' over the top version of "King Kong," there’s not much to say about the covers CD. Sincere indie-rock takes on Johnston's amazingly strong, emotionally intimate songs? How obvious and boring is that? Why have the work of one vocally eccentric artist interpreted by a bunch of wimpy dudes? However, as a sampler of his work, disc two is exemplary, focusing primarily as it does on his '80s home recordings. If you look at this as a great mixtape that comes with some silly covers, you’ll enjoy it plenty.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly loving it
This is the first review I ever write and what better way to start than with an unrecognized artist. I first heard of Daniel Johnson a couple of months ago when the trailer for the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnson" appeared on apple's website. I since then had probably seen that trailer at least 20 times and after all that those views it stills brakes me down and puts me emotional. I have not seen the documentary yet but I ordered this CD a couple of weeks ago and boy was I shocked. The feelings I achieve from hearing his humble recordings are far greater than I expected, it is very hard for me to cry when watching a movie or even hearing a song, but I couldn't hold it with him and I have to admit I cry more than once while going through these songs. If you carefully listen to "Dream Scream" you can hear Daniel breathing so fast that it makes you feel as if he is going to break down in any second.
4-0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!
Open it up, take the 1st CD of covers, open the window, and fling it ouside like a frisbee (watch out for neighbors and pets, though.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars for the disc of originals; two stars and a raised eyebrow for the disc of covers
Daniel Johnston is one of the greatest musicians and songwriters ever.Ever.That he remains relatively anonymous, celebrated only by a very fortunate niche audience, is a sad testament to the lameness of modern day Clear Channel-owned radio and the closed-mindedness of the majority of today's music fans.In a perfect world, everyone would know and love and recognize these songs for the masterpieces they are.

4-0 out of 5 stars a perfectly charming cd that loses steam at the end
If you were to define a great cd by how many memorable songs are on it, what would that number be? 2 songs?, 5 songs?
5-0 out of 5 stars Of all their great albums, this is the greatest
Of course musical tastes are subjective and to each their own. However, as an owner of all of TMBG's albums, this seems best for two reasons. #1 it has so many great pop songs that you cannot get enough of. #2 it has that weird brilliance, those insane lyrics that make you ponder whether these guys are the deepest Zen masters of all-time or just incredibly insane. Heck, either way is fine with me. If you are a fan or don't own any TMBG albums, this one is perfect for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely grows on you
The first time I ever heard this album, I have to say, I was not blown away.Sure, there were some good songs, but it was not a spectacular album in my view. Then, after hearing it a few more times, it started to really grow on me and I realized what a great album it was.Don't give up on it after one listen, because you will be pleasantly surprised. It blends elements of blues, jazz, funk, and rock to make a potpourri of some great music.I think I might just like this album better than Split the Difference, although it is a very close race.I think my favorite tracks on this album are Tijiuana Lady, Rie's Car, Love is Better Than a Warm Trombone, and Get Myself Arrested.Overall, great album.. I hope you enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gomez started a brilliant career with this one
"Bring it on" wasn't recorded in a big studio. Gomez didn't have any celebrity treatment making this album. They were just high school kids making a phenomenal rock album in a garage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really cool psychedelic sound mixed with a bluesy sound
This CD has flavors of the late 60s/early 70s psychedelic sound incorporated into some modern alternative music. The first track Get Miles reminds me a little of the sound of Strawberry Alarm Clock's Incense & Peppermints, while Make No Sound, The Come Back and 78 Stone Wobble could have been extra songs from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Tijuana Lady and Bubble Gum Years reminds me a little of the old Pink Floyd sound when Syd Barrett was the lead signer. Tracks like Get Myself Arrested, Free To Run, and Rie's Wagon have a bluesy sound to them. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but the synapses are already there
Weezer know what you like because you have heard it before.I guess in a way I would give this 3 1/2 stars. It really is just a continuation of their debut. They could package the two discs together and you really wouldn't be able to tell they were done 7 years apart.
5-0 out of 5 stars 100% Fun
There has been much debate among critics and fans alike as to which Weezer album is the best. Although not often cited as Weezer's best, the Green Album arguably offers the goods more than any of their other albums in the category of basic rock n' roll fun. This by and large is because the melodies on the record are of the highest order. The melodies here not only are more consistent than those heard on the other Weezer albums, but superior to just about any album released in the last decade. While some might dismiss the album as nothing original, very few artists carry out the pop/punk style as good as Weezer. Catchy pop/punk songs such as the ones demonstrated here will never go out of fashion. In fact, the album often reminds one of a distorted Beatles.
1-0 out of 5 stars Uhmm...

5-0 out of 5 stars My opinion...
I'm not going to lie I wasn't a huge fan of this whole album when I first listened to it the day it came out.I had heard four or five of the songs previously (live or on compilations) and liked all of them, but some of the other songs I didn't care for.But instead of tossing it to the side I listened to it again. It didn't take long for it to grow on me and probably within the next couple of days, I loved it.I now listen to it practically over and over.Yes, it is a lot different from "E. Von Dahl...", but it's a good different. The guys were pretty young when they wrote the first album and this shows how they've matured and grown, both musically and as people.I suggest that if you buy the album (which I, of course, recommend that you do) and you don't like it at first, give it another listen or two. This cd brings out so many different emotions for me, and I just love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cd of the Year
If you like music, then this cd is for you. There is alittle bit of punk, some opera tones, some heart felt songs. When I hear this band it always makes me smile. This album is full of producers and with that comes 4 guys who are full of passion and would give anything to make music.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best music I have heard in a LONG time!
I will get straight to the point, you are either going to fall deeply in love with this album or you are going to strongly dislike it.I am deeply in love with it.Forget VDKTL which don't get me wrong is a great album and one of my favorites, but decomposer is a completely different piece of work. You will realize this right from the first couple notes of Salty Eyes.It was apparent from VDKTL that The Matches were trying to create something unique. With Decomposer they have succeeded in creating something special and unique. It's hard but soft, electrifying but smooth. The album definitely flows great. It's predictable yet extremely unpredictable.I really don't think there is anything to compare it to.If you are a fan of music and have been hoping that someone would finally go beyond the norm and experiment a little bit, this album was made especially for you!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Iron & Wine and generic backing band
You won't find any calexico here. Sam Beam is in charge from stop to finish with calexico hardly ever creeping through beside the more standardised use of some of their instruments. If anything, calexico's influence is obvious only in the form of appearing to slightly take away from Sam Beam's expressive powers. Having said that it's hard to understand the motivation behind this project, that is until you listen to calexico's following album "garden ruin", which obviously modeled after Sam Beam's style is lacking his essence, making this album not a collaboration of two bands with a healthy appreciation for each other, but a highschooly attempt to get close to one's idol and become alike, with calexico playing the infatuated geeky girl that has to learn to appreciate her self.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beloveds Gestalt
It is just special when two of your beloveds come together. I can't explain it but I really loved these folks powerfully and in parallel for a long time, having no idea of a connection. And so a crossover like this is just so well-met 'round here. I love crossovers!
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful - A Perfect Blend
This album is absolutely beautiful. The full musical sound and talent of Calexico together with the soothing warm vocals of Iron & Wine make the perfect match.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great music, not so great recording quality
After I heard the NPR story on the Heartless [..], I ran out to get their new CD.Erika Wennerstrom has an incredible voice and a knack for writing songs that stick in your head.Listen to "Came a Long Way" and "All This Time" for a good taste of what they do.My only complaint is the recording quality - it almost sounds like it was recorded in a barrel. The bass guitar is too heavy, and the bass is boomy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but somewhat boring
The first track on this album is very very good.Track 5 and 6 are the only other songs that caught my attention. I think this bands sound would be better if they added another guitar player. I do think it is admirable that the bastards sophmore release sounds different from Stairs and Elevators and is produced really well. Windstrom has a great voice and is a very good songwriter I would imagine this band will continue to grow and find there sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars More than solid sophomore album
One of the most ecxiting new bands to come out of Cincinnati in recent years is the Heartless [...] (urrgh, what a TERRIBLE band name), a power trio led by singer-songwriter-guitarist Erila Wennerstrom. 18 months after the release of their very promising debut album "Stairs and Elevators" now comes the second album.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is god
No words for "Keep it Like a Secret." Hands-down one of the greatest albums of the 1990's. Doug Martsch is a god. I just saw them live for the first time last week and it was incredible. Opened with "The Plan" and closed with a heartbreaking version of "Carry the Zero." Magnificant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Secretly the best indie band of the last 10 years.
Doug Martsch had already been fooling around in Treepeople and the slightly legendary Halo Benders before 1994's instant classic 'There's nothing wrong with love' came out. This album had some great songs, riddled with melancholy and full of melody.

Simply put, Keep it Like a Secret is the culmination of the greatest three album run in indie rock history.

2-0 out of 5 stars this band is much better live!
Let me start by saying, i respect these girls immensly. Cocorosie are in a class all their own, they are 100% experiemental. But sometimes as a musician, that either pays off or not so much. In this case, not so much. Although some of the songs are pretty, most of it just sounds like a bad acid trip at a circus. Which makes them really fun to see live. Throughout the whole concert i was mezmerised by their theatrics, their voices, and their stage prescence. Will i put their cd in my player and listen to it alone? No, not in less i want the scary clowns to come out and attack me. Yikes.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
This is a terrible album.Cocorosie is one of those bands that are fun to throw in with a bunch of other bands in a music related conversation to make your taste and knowledge of hip and independent music sound that much bigger than it really is.The cover artwork is pretty funny and cocorosie is a cool name, the only problem is that they make music that sounds like it does and they charge people money to listen to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm digging this heavy hard R & B revival!
A buddy/coworker threw this disk at me and told me I had to listen to it.Being a huge White Stripes fan, both for their adherence to blues licks and for their "medium-fi" level of sound and performance quality, he figured I'd dig it, and in fact, I did.It seemed that although Jack & Meg White often pay homage to Page and Plant, Auerbach and Carney seem to salute Clapton and Baker.Man!Heavy hard licks, gritty "just rolling into Chicago on Highway 61"-style blues. Got the newest on order to see if the Keys have developed some more distinctive riffs (the hardest task in Rock n' Roll!). The Black Keys have it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars This has a dangerous groove!!
This is the new direction for the Blues. These young guys must've listened hard to their parents Blues records and they've put together a funky combo that reminds me of everybody from Fred McDowell to Canned Heat. Obviously the Jr. Kimbrough/RL Burnside influence is strong on all of their CD's. Their sound is a fitting tribute to all the Blues legends. Simple but effective riffs to their songs. Some of them will remind you of Hendrix, JL Hooker or Blind Willie Johnson. "Set You Free" recalls the rwa punkinessof 60's bands like the Sir Douglas Quintet or The Kingsmens "Louie, Louie". The title track has that dirty, swamp feel of some of CCR's hits. Whatever their influences they've made the sound their own and they are a fiiting addition to the inspirational Fat Possum label.

A friend of mine got me hooked on this Band. At 1st I was hesitant at 1st,,, I had a mixed reaction. I listened to The Black Keys 1st disc and was amazed by the blend of music they had. I was just a little upset that the songs were so short. I receieved the other 2 for my birthday and am totally hooked. All the music is addicting and seems like you need to repeat it over and over. I think I need to get a multi-disc player for my truck. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I haven't heard it yet but...
.. I'm sure it is going to be as great as I thought they're first one was/still is.Basically I'm writitng in response to Soulboogiealex in agreeance that it is quite a shame that America hasn't caught on to these guys.I live in Washington State and ran across them about a year and a half ago while linking to the Deltasonic web page via 'The Coral' web page.I listened to a snippit of a song and was really impressed.I was fortunate enough to catch them live in a small, dingy.. but well respected club in Seattle a little over a year ago and was even more impressed with their energy and live performance.I jsut ordered this album and can't wait to hear it first hand!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Rather good
If you compare them to a lot of the British groups currently championed by the NME, the Zutons are actually quite good. Soemwhat innovative melodic rock.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Shame
It's a shame America hasn't got on to the Zutons enough to give them a proper release in the United States. Among the new Britrock revival that started with Franz Ferdinand, followed through with the Kaiser Chiefs and ended (for now) with the Arctic Monkeys, The Zutons are one of the most adventurous and compelling. Slightly reminiscent of early Talking Heads albums the Zutons bring us an elective R&R that is both exciting and daring. The Zutons seem to excel in surprising hooks and original lyrics. There debut was a joyous affair full of promise. There follow up delivers on that promise. Where the debut album was at times too elective and disorientating Tired of Hanging around is a more cohesive effort. The lyrics on the album sound more personal and for a part disbanded the at times absurdist more arty creations of Who Killed the Zutons. This makes their sophomore effort more compelling. The music is exciting as always. Yet the band seems more aware of their strengths. Where on the debut album the Zutons were clearly still looking for their sound, on Tired of Hanging around they appear to have it locked down. The end result is an unusual but Funky R&R record. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Overall a GREAT soundtrack
Was expecting all songs in the movie to be in this CD and was somewhat disappointed; HOWEVER, the remaining songs are still GREAT!

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing Songs
It would be much better if they included every song from the movie, but they definitely did not. The first song in the opening credits is call No Sleep Tonight by The Faders. IF you search Yahoo Movies, you can find a list of every song used in the movie.

If this CD were to be put in a time capsule to be opened in a hundred years, it would give musicologists of the future a pretty fair idea of commercial-minded pop circa 2005. Rarely has a TV show so captured a certain musical zeitgeist as well as Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your regular TV Series Soundtrack!
I love watching the show and love even more that I can listen to the music anytime I want. I was watching some special features from the first season and they had this 'music of the oc' feature; and what I really like about the music selection process is that it's selected based on the emotions and feelings of a particular scene, not just whats on the 'pop charts' at the moment and who wants to pay out tv show to have it aired even though it has nothing to do with the scene! The OC music really connects you with the show and it's a CD that you won't just listen to for a few weeks and put away.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just like the show...
Reflecting the show upon which these mixes hail from, The OC: Mix 5 has completely strayed from what these CDs once were. This album is inconsistently decent at its best. It's a real shame because I had very high hopes for this one, since the only two tracks I went in knowing were Youth Group's "Forever Young" and Phantom Planet's "California 2005," both of which are amazing songs, but can be purchased on iTunes for less than a dollar apiece. "Rock and Roll Queen" by The Subways is a good enough opening track; it's quite catchy. However, tracks 2-5 all fall flat and are highly uninteresting. I'd say the worst is "Publish My Love" by Rogue Wave, which sounds like a bad U2 cover of some sort. "Kids With Guns" is a pretty good track, but only for those of us who are Gorillaz fans. It wouldn't be surprising for the average listener to dismiss this as a boring track. Simply put, the first (nearly) half of this CD is garbage. The second half, from track 6 onward, is pretty good, but it's still not the mix 1-4 were. I can spin the first four mixes all night long. I'm gonna find myself reaching past this one on the stack whenever I feel the need to listen to an OC soundtrack.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not "Right Back Where We Started From"
As a big fan of the OC & its subsequent soundtracks - I'm sad to say that the show has gone downhill a bit since its first season.Does that mean the soundtracks have as well?Well in this case - a little bit, but it's not exactly the music director's fault. The best part of the first mix of the OC, and even the second, was that the songs represented key moments of the show - where the song & scene were so memorable the two were forever tied in your mind (ex: South's Paint the Silence is Marissa & Ryan's first kiss song). As the show gets less memorable - so do the songs, but that doesn't mean this isn't a great album regardless.
