5-0 out of 5 stars A timeline of the Buzzcocks
This record is an exceptional collection of live BBC recordings done by the Buzzcocks documenting their entire career so far. From 'Spiral Scratch' to 'Modern', from the 70s to the 90s, it's all represented here. This is not a collection of one session, but rather a portrait of one of the most important and greatest punk bands. From their snotty punk roots to their later power-pop, this CD lets you hear the evolution of the band as they continue to perfect their skills and songwriting while still remaining relevant to the times. The recording quality may not be consistent for all of the sessions, but it's never poor. There's even the various radio show lead-ins that graced the original broadcasts. For people who might've felt a little let down by the Buzzcock's latest record 'Modern', the versions here of the songs from that record are much rawer and more in-line with the Buzzcock's earlier work. They may even sway you to reevaluate your feelings about the newest record. For true Buzzcocks fans, this is one record you can't do without. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Long, heavy Jams
This is longer than the average EP. "I'm Mad Like Elderidge Cleaver" starts out with audience interaction, moves to an updated & psychedelisized take on "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" from John Lee Hooker, then degenerates into some of the ugliest heavy electric guitar noises and vocal grunts imaginable and hangs out in that musical netherworld for one hell of a long time, ending with a slight wind down, then a SCREAM! This is the real deal if you are into free-form/metal/punk/ unclassifiable beautifully horrible music (?), and if you're a fan of the 5, there at least a 50/50 chance this is your thing. "Ice Pick Slim" is more reserved (well, you could say that about most any other music), but still long and plenty of jamming. I've heard it's based on the Instrumental "Tunji" by John Coltrane, but the 5 really make it their own. Flute solo in the middle, great sound (as with the entire EP), and this one is wild but maybe not so angry as "Mad like Eldridge".

5-0 out of 5 stars MC5 previously unreleased Live Gold
Three tracks clocking in at a total of 40+ minutes, the "Ice Pick Slim" EP is the MC5 at the absolute height of their abilities.Capturing some of the "ferocious five's" most inspired live performances, the raw power contained within this single CD not only overcomes the confines of the studio, but also forcefully breaks down the very barriers of rock music itself. While most punk acts in the 60s had embraced the noble crusade of returning rock to its primordial, abrasive, fuzzed-out roots, the MC5, like the Velvet Underground, chose to use the wild energy of punk to aggressively innovate the stale state of popular music, not only shock. This unique goal of innovation has never been better represented than on the wildly original "Ice Pick Slim" mini-album.Surpassing rock, abandoning punk, and leaving the world of traditional music behind, this EP dives headfirst into a jarring collage of Sun Ra free jazz and Jimi Hendrix accelerated blues.Robin Tyner's horrifically anguished wails and the dueling guitars' rabid lust for mayhem are fueled by Michael Davis and Dennis Thompson's propulsive rhythms, raging ahead in an uncontrollable orgasm of adrenaline.Tyner's surprisingly melodic flute playing and John Sinclair's opposing tenor sax blats only add to the confusion, while the songs' stews of improvisation and rehearsed riffs swell to gigantic proportions which are no longer under the five's loose control. In every way, these two tracks are exactly how improvisational pieces and extended jams ought to be played.Referencing one idea after the next as each musician fights to prolong a groove for as long as it'll hold, The MC5 treats music as a living, breathing entity that can be shaped and changed at will.In fact, the title track and "Mad Like Eldridge Cleaver" push so far over the edge that they not only change the definition of rock, but actually redefine the entire approach to its creation.Simply a musical translation of the MC5's inborn abilities, "Ice Pick Slim" is less a musical end product than a true experience that the listener has been granted the privilege of sharing. The perfect compliment to the MC5's renowned live masterpiece "Kick Out the Jams," "Ice Pick Slim" completes the band's expansive vision, finally providing a full picture of the group's visionary 1968 sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars mc5 alive
well this is one for collectors, 3 live tracks the last two being very long jams, its pretty cool, the covers nice too! I don't have the disc with me at the moment (I am at work getting out of doing anything!) but I think the disc is about 35 mins or so...the motor city 5 will rock yo' ass!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Fascinating.Hearing this makes JB's tragic death even more so.
5-0 out of 5 stars Frightening Good Album
This album brought the 23 out of 2003 for me. "I am Angie Bowie (Sine Waves)" feels like an attempt at deprogramming some hapless electro cultie with a deaf-defying barrage of drones; "An Unearthly Red" is flat out one of the most heroically monsterous songs I've ever heard, and for me captures the sense of the last two years in ten panic-ridden minutes (it sounds like George W. Bush having a six-year-old's temper tantrum that gives way to a red-button-pushing bout of delirium tremens); and I have listened to "The Universe Is A Haunted House" so many times over and over again that my better half has threatened to move out of our house on occasion (that's his way of saying he likes it, too). It's one of my top five favorite songs of all time. Coil have long made songs that I listen to open-mouthed the first time I hear them, not quite believing they could actually exist. Absurd, audacious, frightening, prankish, moving, and transporting, Coil are true visionaries and this album encapsulates everything that is so wonderful about them. It is live in every sense of the word. I would have donated blood and limb to have seen this show, but owning the CD is the next best thing. This album is so good it could give you a nervous breakdown. If it does, you'll be all the better for it when you come back around. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great band, great music, horrible recording!
Stop! Buy one of the studio recordings, especially if this is your first MC5 album. The music is great, it's just that this CD is a live recording and is of VERY poor quality (even by '60s live recording standards). If it is from the soundboard someone needed to take lessons from the Grateful Dead bootleggers.
4-0 out of 5 stars must be a fan!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Children of the Black Sun
As with all the Coil Live releases, Live Four contains "Amethyst Deceivers".As you listen to each version from one to four they become increasingly more beautiful, culminating with the best version by far on this album. One of my favorite tracks off the set of four live releases is "The Last Rites Of Spring" off this album.Believe it or not, Coil even does a song by Sonny Bono on this one, "Bang Bang".Live Four ends as all the albums in the live set, with Jhon Balance climactically exorcising /exercising his demons as the rest of the band draw blood from their synthesizers in an all out aural assault. It is easy to believe the tales of Jhon being mentally as well as physically spent after live performances when hearing these examples. This CD is probably my favorite of the Coil Live set, however that favor will probably shift from album to album as their complexities are revealed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Rock n Roll music!!
This is one of the greatest Rock n Roll band on this planet!! Guitar wolf, from Japan, they are always 100% serious for Rock n Roll, and this CD will let you know the energy of their Great liveconcert.Only thing they care about is to play rock n roll as loud as possible, and they are more rock n roll or punk than any other bands you can watch on MTV. If you like type of music like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion!, you might enjoy it.it is worth to buy this Live album, and it is their best!! ... Read more
