4-0 out of 5 stars Continues to refine
Some of the bands tightest work yet, the graceful combination of catchy hooks, playful vocals, and progressive thrust all under a plate of subverted, usually brilliant pop songwriting proves why this band deserves the devoted underground following they have garnered, but begs the question when they will ever actually be accepted by mainstream radio. With such a fine appetite for catchy intelligence, it is a shame the market has not catered more to what has been offered by Pinback, especially by now in the bands continual refinement. Only a few songs bare the less personal, slightly generic mark that bruised some earlier releases; this band more then most around their scene does have quite a unique sound despite the traditional outfit, and thankfully have come to favor their inspired approach with even more body-swaying, smart devotion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pinback - Summer in Abaddon
This album starts off well.
5-0 out of 5 stars You will NOT be disappointed.
Album is good from beginning to end. Music this good deserves to be listened to endlessly. Older albums have some of the best songs by them. Please check out Rob Crow, his contributions to this band seem to be the life blood of the music. My favorite songs are the ones he has written. "sun froze" killer track. ... Read more

I made a "best of" Hoover CD a few yrs ago and everyone I pass it along to just falls in love with this band. This latest release, though it looks like it's a long way off from being out in the USA (I recommend buying it used), just keeps the magic rolling. It is smooth, fun to listen to, with great hooks, great beats, wonderful vocals. The "A" version of the title track is the coolest song I have heard in years, there is not a single weak track on either disc ("heartbeat" maybe - that one's not a keeper).I am very happy with this CD, its been playing at my house practically every night since I got it.Highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential For Any Hooverphonic Fan
"No More Sweet Music" is actually two albums - the aforementioned title and also a second disc entitled "More Sweet Music". Each of them contain the same 11 songs - by name and lyrics only. I've never heard an album like this before. I gave up deciding which disc is the primary disc. One disc is not comprised of dubbed versions, live versions, outtakes or anything else one could categorize.
5-0 out of 5 stars More sweet music...please!
While a lot of people dislike the direction Hooverphonic went after their debut, I happen to love it (for the most part). I loved A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular, but I've also loved every subsequent album. The one problem that I have had with all their albums (aside from the first) is that there are always a couple tracks that are SO odd and experimental that even I had trouble with them (such as the last three tracks on Presents Jackie Cane, which was otherwise my former favorite Hoover album). That is not the case with No More Sweet Music. They've ditched the over-the-top showtuney experiments in favor of a more cohesive and overall pleasant listening experience. There are enough chill tracks to please fans of their older stuff and enough poppy, flamboyant tracks to please fans of their more recent stuff.

Editorial Review

Scanning the track listing of this album, it's hard not to conclude that Blur aren't a little embarrassed by their early work. Opening with the chart one-two of "Beetlebum" and "Song 2" (from their eponymous 1997 watershed album) rather than the baggy groove of their debut single, "She's So High," it's apparent that they desire to accentuate their more recent efforts. Running order aside, it's hard to fault the 18 songs which chart the life and times of one of Britain's smartest, most inventive bands. From the tuxedoed ballad "The Universal" through the cartoon Brit-pop of numbers such as "Parklife" and "Country House" to the freshly recorded indie-influenced "Music Is My Radar," their searching intelligence and deft hooks are never less than admirable. all i can say is that the best song here is "song 2". i remember when i bought the fifa road to world cup 98 video game. whenever i hear this song it reminds me of the game.

this british group reminds me of the Beatles. Creativity, profoundness andto be freight with emotions and thoughts which were peculiar to the Beatles come to resurface as if reborn in another body.Songs such as Parklife, Song 2 are fabulous in two words. Everytime I watch their videoclip 'coffee & tv' I burst into tears. So meaningful and unique.

Since Blur is my favorite band, it only makes sense that I would like a Greatest Hits CD, but there are actually a number of things to criticize about the Best of Blur. For one thing, this compilation was made before the Think Tank album came out. Thus, the somewhat significant Blur hit "Crazy Beat" is not featured on the Best of Blur: a shame since I would consider it to be a pretty good song by the band. Also, my three favorite Blur songs are not featured on this CD (I'm Just A Killer For Your Love, Brothers & Sisters, He Thought of Cars). I strongly believe they ought to have been included, though, because these tracks seem to most clearly display Blur's skills in that they all have amazingly catchy rhythms, dandy lyrics, and are completely original and unique. Contrary to what others say, I don't think Blur is anything like Oasis. Sure, they're both British, but Blur has much more originality, more noise, and a bit more cleverness (although I do really like Oasis too). Anyway, the Best of Blur does have its upsides too. It does after all include the non-album song "Music Is My Radar", and compile a few of the band's best songs. There is of course the track that made them famous: "Song 2", as well as their mellow yet really good song "Coffee and TV". Some selections are really crappy, though, such as some of Blur's weakest attempts at soft songs (No Distance to Run, To the End). When push comes to shove, though, this is a quite commendable "best of" CD that Blur fans ought to try out for the hard to find single "Music Is My Radar" (although it's not that great of a Blur song) as well as for the Live C.D. that comes with it, if you choose to check that version out . ... Editorial Review

Singer Morrissey's brittle wit and guitarist Johnny Marr's incisive guitar helped make the Smiths create both an entranced cult following and pop music of the highest order. The U.S. edition of the band's second album includes the bonus single "How Soon Is Now?" and while it's a welcome addition, the rest of the tracks stand ably on their own. The militant vegetarianism is heavy-handed, but the sly humor of "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" and "I Want the One I Can't Have" present proof of the band's scope, as do the anthemic "The Headmaster Ritual" and "Rusholme Ruffians." 5-0 out of 5 stars For the Smiths Fan or the Vegetarian/Vegan
I abstain from eating meat in my diet and I found true meaning and emotion in the title track of this album, "Meat is Murder." It expresses the emotions of vegetarians and vegans around the world. Can't people just see what they're doing is murder?!
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely haunting
Meat is Murder was one of my first forays into indie music as a 15 year old kid in 1987 and what a great place to start. Full of painful angst and alienation, Morrissey really bears himself... his wretched life lives all over these songs. Maybe it's a little dramatic, but it never seems faked and it always sounds fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Smiths album
This is the album that got me hooked on the Smiths back in 1986.A friend had copied the album recorded to tape.I avoided listening to it for several months, until one afternoon listening to Rusholme Ruffians. At the time (at the age of 16), I could not make out what Morrissey was singing, nor would have I understood the lyrics if they had been printed. However, I indentified with the music.Although Morrissey seemed to sing off-key at times, there was a sense of urgency that was very honest and passionate. My favorite songs from the album include:

coldplay is a great band. this album is for real fans.
4-0 out of 5 stars Quite good concert but sloppy editing
It's always fun watching concert DVD's. For one thing, being a musician, I can actually watch not only how they play the songs but see the musicianship of the band without the benefit of redoing takes and overdubbing certain parts. It's still a bit too early for a Coldplay DVD but still it's quite a good one regardless, it's just marred by the MTV-style editing that I'm very much despising at the moment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of the Asian HDCD Edition (CD only)
I have some of Coldplay's studio albums, and frankly, they don't hold a candle to the live performances. There's no zing zang zip to the studio stuff. It's kind of pedantic, unenergetic, bland, and...well...plain boring.Live 2003 is the polar opposite.I can only conclude that the studio work is necessary for them to write and flesh out their new material, but it's in live performance that the songs actually breath...where the magic happens. This band, more than any other I've come across, needs to be heard in its live incarnation.Coldplay sucks up the energy from that audience, concentrates it, changes it, then spits it back out at them gloriously.I'm going to upset some people, but I'd say avoid the studio albums and go for their live discs and some concert tickets. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Smashing, indeed
I am only discovering Gish in 2006 because in the early 90's I was on a self-imposed moratorium from listening to rock music. (long story)Whether this album sounds dated to some or not, it sure sounds fresh to me!
5-0 out of 5 stars Grade "A" music, and maybe ever better......
If you like Rock music and you only settle for the best, buy this album. There are so many reasons why this album is so brilliant. The guitar work is extremely magical and exquisite. On the contrary to the other Pumpkins albums, it's all real performing. By this I mean no drum machines or synthesizers are used. The LSD the Pumpkins were experimenting with at the time obviously acted as a source of inspiration. If your a fan of the Pumpkins other albums, there is no reason you wouldn't like this one{their debut}. All I am really trying to say is get your hands on this record and officially experience it. Crank it up real loud on a quality stereo, find a comfortable place to sit, and let your mind be soothed. If it turns out you hate this record, go see a doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a great album
Gish in my opinion is by far the best album The Smashing Pumpkins have put out. Using the heavy Underground/Alternative rock sound they make an album that gets your attention, but at the same time using lots of catchy melodies, and well thought out chord changes, The Pumpkins create there own sound that doesn't seem to get overwhelming, boring, and annoying, Like many of the other bands of the nineties. The Overall talent and creativity of all the members seems to fit together and it all just seems to flow smoothly. Even during the lighter three song break of "Crush", "Suffer", and "Snail" the Pumpkins still keep the music interesting and incredibly enjoyable to listen to. A couple things that really stand out to me (not only in this album but throughout the pumpkins entire music career) is the heavy but flawless and smooth flowing drumming of Jimmy Chamberlin. No matter what Billy and the rest of the band comes up with he is always on top of his drumming, always seeming to come up with something for everything. Then there's Billy Corgan's unique and recognizable voice, which he uses to sing his amazing lyrics. And that just adds to everything else to make the whole thing a masterpiece in my opinion. Gish has been one of my favorite albums for a long time now and will continue to be a favorite for ever. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, then not so good
The CD starts out great with a nice slow beginning to Empty. But then you get a feel for what's coming up.Some good old fashioned headbanging music. While I don't think the words are all that meaningful, the music is quite catchy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Quietly Brilliant
This album is so sublime, catchy, crunchy, unique, and well perfect... if those were enough words to describe this release. In the recent past Canada has given us Stars and the Arcade Fire. By word of mouth I heard of this band on a forum I frequent and downloaded "Portrait of a Girl". Just hearing that urged me to go out and buy the album. In no way was the full album a let down. I love the soft(er) rock edge to the songs and the artsy feel that I have come to expect from artists from above the border. Emily Haines has one of the best voices I have heard. I have to say that this surpasses even the latest Goldfrapp release 'Supernature'. That is saying alot. Go out and buy this CD. I guarantee you would find yourself addicted and the least bit disappointed. In fact you will be drooling for more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poster of a band!
This is one of the best albums this year. With Emily Haines consistently sounding like Naomi Watts looks (compelling, wistful, with just an trace of trash around the edges), and enough sparse yet potent 80s-inspired guitar hooks, this Toronto band hangs with the best.

In many ways this collection, which compiles each of the band's out of print EPs from 1997-2001, is all the "greatest hits" you'll need by the Scottish combo. It's easy to take Belle and Sebastian for granted these days--they don't sound as good as they used to, and certainly it’s difficult to imagine them ever becoming as culturally/musically relevant as they were once upon a precious, fey little time. But this collection brings the listener back to a time when it was crucially important to find their import EPs, when no one else in the world seemed to be making indie-pop that was so full of sincerity and irony at the same time, nor as gorgeously crammed with orchestral elements and naughty-smart lyrics. "The State I Am In" has never sounded better, while "Lazy Line Painter Jane," which expanded their sound to include C&W-ish elements, is clearly one of the band’s best tunes ever (and perhaps a more interesting direction than the vaguely soulful one they took later on). The almost-rolliciking, smartypants "Le Pastie De La Bourgeoise" is brutal and elegant. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One excellent EP after another on 2 CDs
From the outset, it looked as though this collection gathering all of Belle and Sebastian's various EPs released in the late 90's and early 2000's was a very...very good idea. Considering that the EPs themselves are insanely difficult to find, having them all here on this portable chronological collection is great. Belle and Sebastian has always been a very good singles band (rivaling The Smiths) and the songs on their EPs are just as good if not sometimes better than what appears on their proper albums. This album is so definitive of Belle and Sebastian's sound, that one can introduce themselves to the lonely and most inflective of the bunch tendencies of Stuart Murdock's world without hearing a single song on one of their albums. Everything that defines Belle and Sebastian can be found on the songs here. From self deprecation to sheer vanity and the affecting melodies and the images they evoke, their songs are an emotional journey that an exceptionally few number of bands can replicate.

If you saw the movie "the devil & Daniel Johnston", its nice get a listen to the original "Hey Joe" by Johnston (not on the movie though), well done here by SparkleHorse...

5-0 out of 5 stars Chaos of the Galaxy / Happy Man
This is not a full review. I was reading these reviews and many of you wondered why the terrific song Happy Man was buried in static. I read somewhere that it's been rumored that Mark Linkous purposely "sabotaged" that track after learning that their record company wanted to make the song their next single. He did this because he didn't want to be too commercialized. The "clean" version (called the Memphis Version) of this song can be found on the EP "Distorted Ghosts".

5-0 out of 5 stars DCFC really does have something for everybody.
This album takes you on a ride just as the other dcfc albums do...you are mesmerised from track 1 until the end. my personal favorites are "president of what", "champagne from a paper cup", "pictures in an exhibition", and "amputations" (although i like the "something about airplanes" versions of these songs more). But, to speak of favorite songs with this band is irrelevant for most true fans because every song is enjoyable in one way or another. I haven't heard one that I don't like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended For Fans Only
This is a collection of Barsuk Record's DCFC rarities and unreleased songs. This contains some of their earliest work, before they developed their sophisticated style of indie rock. After having listened to all of their albums, this album is the "rawest".The layered production of their later work is gone, although the catchy hooks and energy of the band shines through.DCFC is one of the most unique and individual indie bands to emerge in years, and their influence of ska, and punk come through.President of What, Champagne From a Paper Cup, Pictures In An Exhibition, Amputations, and Line of Best Fit all were rerecorded for their first album Something About Airplanes. This Charming Man is a Smith's cover, my favorite songs are State Street Residential, and Army Corps of Engineers, and Song For Kelly Huckaby. At 18 songs, this is still a good listen. There is a great balance of fast and slow songs. It is interesting to see how much of a rock band DCFC was in the beginning and how they've grown.

5-0 out of 5 stars DCFC's Best Album
I might get a lot of negative responses from this review, but in my opinion this is the best album Death Cab has produced. It is very complete, well thought out, and each song says something. I have been a Death Cab fan for a long time, and have every single album they have produced, listened to each one countless times, and this one strikes me as their best one. Maybe this doesnt get the appreciation it deserves because not every fan has this album. Give this cd a chance and listen to each song carefully, and you will see what i'm talking about. Antony was the only one I loved--okay Rufus was fine too-- in that horrible documentary on Leonard Cohen. So I went out and got this album. You really can play leave this CD in your machine and play it over and over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars From another planet
Wherever he came from - and it seems unlikely he is an earthling - Antony is like a fallen angel whose twisted poetry and bittersweet ideas shock and delight. He divides people - love him or don't get him - if you love him: lucky you. He is worth opening ears and heart to - magic stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums, ever
I should start by saying I'm usually not a fan of music that's this theatrical. But Antony's voice is one of the most gorgeous and powerful instruments I've ever heard, and paired with the lyrics on this album, one imagines him as a mournful angel trapped halfway between heaven and hell.I've had this for several months, and I still listen to it almost daily. It's stunning, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

I was first introduced to "Cosmic Thing" when I was 10 (I'm 13 now), when my dad had me listen to the cassette tape he had of it. I instantly LOVED it, and "Cosmic" became the soundtrack to my summer. Great party CD, and the last track is great for chilling out. You can't hate this, no matter how hard you try. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Album of the year so far
This is a stunning debut album from the Guillemots and by far the best album I have heard this year. There are occasional nods to Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire and maybe early Peter Gabriel-inspired Genesis in here, but do not get the impression that this is not fresh. The opening five tracks are stunning, especially 'Made-Up Lovesong #43', 'Trains to Brazil' and the achingly beautiful 'Come Away With Me'. A must-buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's all in the arrangements
This album is beautifully arranged and in this day and age of slap-dash releases this is a cohesive, studied work of art.An absolutely gorgeous collection of beyond-pop songs. They stretch the concept of the pop song into territories not touched since Jeff Buckley left this world... with maybe a nod to Rufus Wainwright (sans pomp). It is NOT a rock record. It is string-laden singer-songwriter magic that would make a 60's Scott Walker proud and a 30th Century Scott Walker prick up his ears.really really special.

5-0 out of 5 stars a beautiful album
normally when discussing a 'new' band, the first question we tend to ask is, 'who do they sound like?' reference points, sadly, seem to make or break a band, or ultimately determine whether or not we'll like a band, or even worse, whether or not we'll even give them a chance. in this day and age it's next to impossible to find a truly original band. everyone copies whatever the latest 'trend' happens to be, even in beloved indieverse.

Editorial Review

Fountains of Wayne is one of the leaders of the latest in a long series of power- pop revivals. If the music sounds a lot like mid-'60s pop rock, it's no accident, for thesongwriters are unabashed British Invasion fans. The songs on the debut album,Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars power pop at its best
This is a classic work that has yet to be formally recognized.
5-0 out of 5 stars one of my faves
One of those rare albums where EVERY song on it is excellent. Each track on here are filled with extremely catchy hooks that will stick in your head for months. I still have a hard time getting some of the songs out of my head, after I heard for the first time about 4 months ago.
5-0 out of 5 stars Self Titled Magic
There isn't a song in this collection that isn't at least good.Catchy, quirky lyrics, with British Invasion inspired melodies.Be careful, or after listening to this album you'll catch yourself singing it.Radiation Vibe, Sick Day, and Please Don't Rock Me Tonight are my personal favorites. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
I just love this band and love this CD. If I could only pick one album, it would be this one."Crazy Game of Poker", "Anyway", "Hey Girl" are my faves!

3-0 out of 5 stars 2 Discs, Same Tracks
Very strange.I purchased a used copy and I put in the disc labled DISC 1 and it has the 8 tracks from DISC 2.DISC 2 has the correct tracks.Anyone else get this?

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
First let me say this. The music created by O.A.R. is feel good music that is pretty easy to enjoy. But honestly, to those who are saying that they are the best live band ever is ridiculous. And one person said that their music isnt as interesting as Dave Matthews. Oar's music just consists very simple guitar chords going in repetitive order. DMB has much more talent and much more intricate and better music. The guitar solos are pretty weak and so are the sax solos. Just please dont compare this band to Dave Matthews Band, that is a crime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamy.
"Souvlaki" shimmers and floats.Layers and layers of hauntingly ethereal melodies and gentle, soothing vocals create shadowy dreamscapes in the mind of listeners. The excellent studio production allows for a full, rich sound that nearly bursts at all the right times. The overall mood of the album is sad, but not depressing or melancholy.Said sadness usually comes in the form of a vague overtone of loneliness ("40 Days" is a prime example of this) My choice track is "Souvlaki Space Station," which showcases beautifully hollow reverb guitar and paints a mental image of floating through starry skies. If you prefer your shoegaze in relatively abstract form and appreciate pure atmosphere, "Souvlaki" is perfect for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars That's Good Shoegazing
Indeed, Souvlaki by Slowdive is a shoegazing mainstay.Though not as highly acclaimed or as widely regarded as My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, Slowdive's second album is, in my humble opinion, the second best record the shoegazing subgenre has to offer. In fact, among the sub-subgenre of shoegazing, dream pop, Souvlaki is about as dreamy and ethereal as anything, MBV included. The album opener, "Alison," is a highpoint.A truly beautiful song.In fact the first four songs are absolutely breathtaking.Throw into the mix "Altogether" and "Dagger" and you've got a mesmerizing record here.An aboslute must for shoegazing fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very nice - but definitely not five star material!
This is most certainly a lovely album, and definitely Slowdive's most diverse. But one of the previous reviewers is correct in identifying that there are actually a couple of not so great moments on here. I always thought that "Alison" never really gelled with the rest of the album, and I'm sure they could have done a better job of "When The Sun Hits" if they had put in a little more effort!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best album I've bought this year
I discovered this band a while back through their video for "Banana Man" and have been listening to their demos ever since. I recently bought MMMM and I really like it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anybody will find something about ths band to like...
If you like Queen, Weezer, The Beatles, Beastie Boys, Ben Folds or bands that can combine all of the talents of these bands into a great cd - this is it.You found your cd.I don't know anyone who listened to even a few of the tracks and didn't fall in love with this cd.It's a great cd from a band that is constantly coming up with something new and different for their fans. They put on a great show live too. They're extremely talented and have managed to put together a smart, funny cd that is easy to listen to the whole way through.None of the songs sound the same, so it has a little something for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Marvelous . . .
