Editorial Review

Just when this Icelandic crew seemed stuck in loud/soft/loud/ soft rut a la Mogwai or Godspeed You Black Emperor, they release their most beguiling, subtle and beautiful album yet. This album, allegedly the group's first sung in Icelandic rather than their own made-up "Hopelandic" (not that this listener could tell the difference) is relentlessly joyous, unaffectedly rad and inventive but never just for its own sake. Strings hold an ever more prominent place in the music, and this is a good thing. Songs unfold slowly as usual, but they take unexpected turns as often as not. The brilliant "Glósóli" burbles with as much melodic invention and anything by their fellow Icelanders Mum.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Takk is amazing
All of their albums have been gold, takk is no different great album.

5-0 out of 5 stars a strong statement
Sigur Ros are one of our very best and most special bands, and this album is no different. Some detractors had said that after () they looked like they may have been caught in the same sort of trap that many post-rock bands get caught in, the loud-soft-loud syndrome. Takk answers this charge by containing, to my ears at least, a fair deal more diversity. Though that really seems almost meaningless when the songs are as beautiful as they are. Takk/Glosoli exemplifies this. I was shocked the first time I heard the crescendo and explosion towards the end of this track, and knew great things awaited. What makes the album so great is that it contains so many extremes. Glosoli contains a subtle sense of innocence and joy (indeed one of the most striking images from its music video is that of a small girl kissing a small boy on the cheek), and the sense of grandeur that is so often invoked on the album (Saeglopur), and also the sorrow and longing (the 10+ minute Milano-that never seems to drag-and the amazing Andvari) just here create a total experience. It is music not for life, but rather it illuminates life. They, in their most profound moments, allow you to view and identify with all that is beautiful, and sorrowful, and terrible and majestic, making their music in my mind far from "weird" as many put it, but rather intensely human.

it was agaetis byrjun that got me into the sigur ros style of music and that one is still better than this album...dont get me wrong but if someone wanted to get into sigur ros i would highly recommend starting with agaetis or ()...this is still a great album but it sounds a bit more pop-ish than id like...i grew accustomed to the long and "nothing else like it" sound of the untitled album as well...it is a bit of a sleeping pill like others mention but this one is more likely to keep u awake and listening to that beautiful music that sigor ros produces. i bought it on expectations of it being an extention of () but was only slightly dissapointed...still worth every penny ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a minimalist work of art.
First off, let me preface this review by saying that my two favorite albums right now are Converge's "You Fail Me" and Pelican's "The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw"
5-0 out of 5 stars Emily Haines Fans- Dig Deeper
OK, I really love this record. Some of it's pretty sad, all of it's pretty beautiful, and the best part- 100% Emily Haines. If she isn't the most creative, talented, artistic person making music in the alt/rock world, I don't know who is.Warning, repeated listening may cause depression in the thoughtful or weak of heart!
5-0 out of 5 stars I disagree!
This album is beautiful. No would have, could have's here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, this deserves every star.
I came to Bloody Valentine a little late in the game (late 90's) and I wasn't too enamoured with their other works. In fact, I had a difficult time getting into this album. I think this album is like one of those 3D puzzles where you really have to relax your eyes, or better yet, don't try and find the picture you're supposed to be looking for. Relax your brain, turn off your active listening, and then put this album on repeat. I found that in order to really get the initial experience of this album it should be on very low volume while your doing other "brainy" things. After a few hours of writing heady material, solving the world's problems, or replacing the brake pads on your car, somehow everything about Loveless will magically "click". Once I figured out how to introduce this album to people I have yet to have anyone call me back and tell me "they don't get it".

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant & Revolutionary
I've owned this album for ten years now...I can't think of a more awe inspiring cd in my collection.I relisten to it from time to time and still in 2006 it seems ahead of its time and revolutionary.
5-0 out of 5 stars As close to perfection as I've ever heard
What can I say about this album that hasn't already been said? There are a handful of albums that have altered the musical landscape with their genius, and this is definitely in that class. The knock-off bands are still coming out of the woodwork 15 years later. As close to perfection as I've ever heard... and maybe ever will hear... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic at its best
Just purchased this album yesturday and was very excited to find out how perfect it was.My wife is not yet a fan of Sufjan's, so I am going solo to his only appearance in LA in October to see him, but the wife actually says that she kinda digs this album. So its definetly Sufjan but its more acoustic and more banjo than his newer stuff which is great.Check it out if you can find it until its re-released...

5-0 out of 5 stars Like Iron and Wine, but more spiritual
From the banjo on the first song to the lyrics "Son of Man! Son of God!", Sufjan pulls together an album worth remembering.Highlights include: All The Trees..., To Be Alone With You, Abraham, We Won't Need Legs to Stand, and Seven Swans. At times poetic, at times prophetic, and at times just lush and beautiful, Seven Swans will grow on you more and more with every listen. With its gorgeous overt Christian lyrics and folksy songs, Sufjan has proven that he is an upcoming singer/songwriter that means business. In an industry flooded with such perverse imagery, Sufjan gives us the word of God and the observations of an imperfect man who recognizes God's perfect power.Whatever the subject, Sufjan can tackle it head on without compromising who he is.For fans of Iron and Wine, this CD is a must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This was my intro to Sufjan Stevens, and it was a wonderful place to start.I was at first a little turned off by the Christianity themes, references, etc., but I couldn't deny that I loved the music (and oddly enough, The Transfiguration, perhaps the most blantantly Christian and certainly most Biblical, is my favorite song).Perhaps not as... impressive as Illiniose, but if you enjoyed any of his other albums, you should certainly get this one, too, or if you're just checking it out, at least listen to the samples so you know what you're getting into, or rather, just get it.You'll be pleased with this purchase. ... try enya , or sarah brightman, yes they may be overated, but they are also THE BEST PERIOD..i hate to say it but emiliana needs to go back to iceland...try celine dion, dolores from the cranberries, italian singer laura paussini, eroz rammazotti, now thats creme!!!!!!!!! notEMILIANA TORRINI from iceland!!! in my opinion, she doesnt hit a single note, humm thats so sad..whats up with tuna fish????the only way i like my tuna is in a sandwich...not in a song.....lol

5-0 out of 5 stars Emiliana's Best So Far...
This is an amazing piece of work: haunting, memorable, captivating. It was in my CD for weeks last summer, couldn't take it out.I can't say the same for Fisherman's Wife though - if you're into acoustics, it will be right up your alley. It's definitely not in the same vein as LitToS.Try Daugher Darling or Baxter if you are looking for similar 'moods'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Iceland Rocks!
Love In The Time Of Science is an interesting mix of Emiliana Torrini's haunting voice and lyricism and Roland Orzabal's synth loving producing.I've heard Torrini compared to fellow Icelandic chanteuse, Bjork.Their voices sometimes do sound alike, but there the comparison ends.Where Bjork likes a heavy disco beat, Torrini prefers a jazzier, more ethereal sound and unexpected chord changes. Her cool, understated style is nicely complemented here by Orzabal's synthesizers.

3-0 out of 5 stars And now for something completely... uh... different?
Suffice it to say that the debut from Under The Influence of Giants is easily a hodge-podge of styles.Generally, I think such a mixture can yield some very interesting results. In this case, I'd say the results are interesting, but not for the reasons you might think.
5-0 out of 5 stars FUTURE CLASSIC INDEED!!!
Honestly, I thought I reviewed this album already, but I guess I didn't...well, here we go again!!!I agree with the reviewer that this debut rekkid by UTIOG will, in 10+ years, be viewed as a future classic, and right now, I think it's an easy contender for my top 10 of 2006...possibly best DEBUT album of this year, no doubt!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome
I discovered this album purely by chance. I went to buy Scissors Sisters's cd, and the guy in the store introduced me to this cd. As soon as I heard Mama's Room, I was hooked. In the past I've said that compilations are, as a rule, pure evil. I am willing to backtrack on those sentiments in the case of this disc, however. It's simply a great collection of songs from a great band. One can't really complain much. With the Barenaked Ladies, this should only be a jumping-off point, since they have so much great material beyond what's included here. If you're new to them, this is a great place to start.

I bought this CD prior to seeing the BNL's in concert. It has all the best songs from all their albums and it is a great mix for first time listeners. It has sold me to buy other albums by them.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Barenaked Fans Should Get This CD
I love this CD because it has most of my favorite BNL songs as well as some others that I like.I own everyone of their CDs, but there are songs on them that I just don't like to listen to.I like every song on this CD and I never have to skip around. It's great to listen to, and it's a nice addition to any BNL collection.I reccomend this CD to anyone who loves BNL, even if you already have all the CDs, and to anyone who wants to get a taste of this great band.If you don't like what you hear on this CD, try listening to one of the other albums (I love their X-mas CD).Don't be turned of from this band by reviews saying that the CD is terrible.Their an awesome band. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of those
I few years ago I randomly picked up Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and was hooked. Hungry for more F'Lips I went back in time to this -- and was disappointed. Besides Race for the Prize and Waitin' For A Superman I didn't find much else to like. I decided to pick up this CD again recently, since I was going to one of their shows (it was unbelievable) and I was blown away. This is one of those albums that takes some time and careful listening to in order to fully appreciate its beauty. Tracks like Feeling Yourself Disintegrate and A Spoonful Weights A Ton are so well crafted I can only smile and sometimes even shed a tear. Simply gorgeous and worth every second.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have a nice day.
The Flaming Lips are perhaps the ultimate "happy" rock band.Their music is just perfectly fluffy and uplifting, without having to be too overtly sunny and positive.I really think it's impossible not to feel good while listening to these guys.Heck, even Trent Reznor lists the Flaming Lips as one of his favorite bands, and look at what a gloomy guy he is.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Modern Day Symphony
The major reason that "The Soft Bulletin" is such an amazing album is because at the time that it came out no really excepted that the Flaming Lips could make an album like it. Whilst they constantly realised albums that were brilliant, they were very much a cult college band.

Chronicling The Replacements' gloriously tempestuous decade on a single disc ostensibly seems akin to reading Cliff's Notes for the New Testament: No sooner do you grow fond of the protagonist than they've nailed him up. And if that comparison sounds a tad sacrilegious, perhaps you underestimate the Mats' hallowed place in modern rock history--and the hearts of their ardent fans. Yet somehow even this condensed format focuses the songs of Paul Westerberg and playing of bandmates Bob and Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars into a dramatic arc that can't be denied. The initial tracks of this 20-track collection display a band joyously besotted by nascent punk thrash, yet one not so different from the scores of similar bands tearing up local clubs in the '80s. 4-0 out of 5 stars Unreplaceable?
Ahh the Replacements. That band you've heard about for so many years but have no idea what they sing. Well as intended, here's the new first choice for the casual fan. This is better than their past collection because it draws from more than just 4 albums, sounds great, and is 20 tracks. The last 2 are "new" songs by the way, both decent. The first half of this disc is awesome. Song after song of primo 80's alternative. The later songs I still dig too, so they're a bit more polished and pop. "Alex Chilton" and "Can't Hardly Wait" might be the biggest hits here, but "Bastards Of The Young", "Achin' To Be", and "Merry Go Round" are great as well. I actually wish "Talent Show" was here too, but that's just me. Anyway, new fans or old, don't fuss over what's missing, just love what's here. I'd say this would go well with Paul's "Besterberg" disc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the (anti) legend
Normally when you browse amazon for replacements or westerberg/stinson related material, all of the "customers who bought this item also bought" entries are similar replacements/westerberg/stinson/etc. albums.Look at the list now... not another Minneapolis rocker to be found at all.

Listening to this album brought me back to my teenage years growing up in the burbs, but made it seem like I actually had fun.Starting with the early punkier stuff to go with my early adolesent rage and wanting to get drunk to the later more mature songs of heartbrake and relationships, and wanting to get drunk. It's a good trip down blurry memory lane. ... Blessed with the voice of a wispy angel, Elliott Smith creates sad little pop songs, which, like the work of Nick Drake (to whom he's been compared) threaten to disappear into the night air. Several of the tracks here were featured in Gus Van Zant's movie Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Smith's Best.
I have owned this album for a few years.I always liked it, but I just didn't give it the time it deserved. When I bough XO earlier this year, I absolutely fell in love with Elliott Smith.I played that album a million times, as it was immediately accessible to me.I was convinced that it was better than Either/Or.However, when I decided that I would give Either/Or another spin, the greatness of that album jumped right out at me.I heard the songs like I had never heard them before, and as I kept listening to Either/Or, the songs kept getting better and better.Either/Or is my favorite because it is not as heavily produced as XO, which gives the songs more meaning to me, but it is more diverse than Roman Candle or his self-titled album. The songs are more somber and subdued than his songs on XO, but they are not as flat-out depressing as his earlier stuff (which, don't get me wrong, is still amazing). His lyrics on this album ring even truer to me now than those on XO.It just took me an extra step (XO) to get to this masterpiece. My advice for new listeners is to start out with XO, and then when you need another Elliott Smith, immediately buy this one. Once you fall madly in love with this album, all of his other albums should be greatly enjoyable to you as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alamada, and pictures of me.
I didn't understand this album at first. I didn't understand why everyone liked Elliot Smith, and this was my first introduction and this is the best Elliot Smith album. I am so glad I kept it on my computer because about 6 months later I heard it again and listened to it again and again. Not pretentious like I had thought but real. and smooth. Alamada, pictures of me, ballad of a big nothing, and speed trials are the best songs. Elliot Definitely inspired by Beatles and Beach Boys. Elliot seems like someone who fits in perfectly yet doesn't. Elliot keeps it honest but not in a "look I am being honest way." I don't want to make it all about Elliot, as I don't like to make music neccesarilly completely about the person or bring it up so much like some critic but this album really does make you feel in touch with him,. maybe it is a sydrome of all people that died young or killed themselves as I feel the soul of Cobain, Joplin, and so forth.....but I feel like I stabbing myself in the chest when listening to this music. it's all relative. anyway this review sucks and I don't care if you agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the best.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite a classic (but getting close)
My first experience with Ratatat was an unforgettable performance when the duo, Evan Mast and Mike Stroud, took to the stage when touring with Mouse On Mars.Never having heard of them before I had no idea what to expect. Just two guys, their guitars, and a drum machine, yet I haven't been more pleased with an opening act like the energy Ratatat put onstage. Needless to say I was a convert by the time they had finished their set, and I was eagerly anticipating the next studio release.
5-0 out of 5 stars More Fat Beats From RATATAT
Ratatat's second album Classics, is full of energy, but mostly great instrumentation. The music is yet again all synthesizers, drum machines, guitar and bass. But this time it seems that the duo has grow up a little, with a much more mature follow up to the very good self titled album. This album has a lot more substance to it, and is faster as a whole. I got to see them on their Classics Tour and live you can see all the energy that each song has.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a "classic"
"If you like Explosions in the Sky, Depeche Mode, and Air's "Moon Safari" than buy this album."I never heard of the band until it was recommened to me from the record store teen and the guy was right on.This is a cool album, very creative and by far one of my best purchases in several years and I own lots of cd's. It lacks the gimmicky pop sound often with electronic music and is not the constant repeating of a looped melody: this keeps the songs fresh after many listenings. This album goes to the top of my list as best of 2006 and will certainly be a Christmas gift for friends and family. If the band continues on this path and doesn't get lazy (like Air and Royksopp) there is little doubt they will be very well known. The next Depeche Mode?? Only time will tell, but this album is promissing and a good addition. ... Read more

I first heard Kill Hannah on a tour with Clear Static and Shiny Toy Guns earlier this year. I was hooked with the first set I heard from them. (I went on to hear them twice more in the next 3 days.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this cd.
If you are unfamilar with Kill Hannah, then buy either of their albums available here on amazon.
3-0 out of 5 stars Glam rock that shifts gears often enough to cause engine damage.
As elegant as it is over the top, as sophisticated as it is bombastic, Chicago based Kill Hannah's second major label offering balances between excess and subtlety while never letting one outweigh the other. High energy glam rock anthems like 'Love You to Death' and album's first single 'Lips Like Morphine' hold nothing back while slower and decidedly mellower selections like 'Black Poison Blood' and 'The Collapse' recall the pleasant, drawn out melodies of Smashing Pumpkins' later days. While this balance of polarized song styles makes for a varied and enjoyable record, sometimes the group delves a bit too far into each side. Some tracks go beyond being subtle, becoming dull and tedious ('Statues Without Eyes') while others are almost too over the top to be taken seriously (see the 80's synth pop excess of 'Crazy Angel'). Overall, Until There's Nothing Left of Us is a solid and enjoyable effort and the album's excellent last three songs more than compensate for its few steps in the wrong direction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sonic Boom!
Red Sparowes have created a truly epic experience with this album. It'll take you soaring over a sonic soundscape that you will never forget. I bought this album not really expecting too much, just some instrumental music to pass the time. What I got was something beyond my imagination. I couldn't have imagined that this album would deliver the sterile quietness it would or the complete sonic wall of sound it did. At times this a very catchy album. I feel Red Sparowes have succeeded at making this an album to remember.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best band going keeps the trend alive
I think that the first review really covers everything that I wanted to say, but I have to add some stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars With their Second Full-length Effort, Red Sparowes Truly
The L.A.-based experimental post-rock group known as Red Sparowes has done it again, having produced a second full-length album that proves to be even more elaborate and breathtaking than the first. Every Red Heart Shines Towards the Red Sun, to be released September 19, 2006, features 8 tracks, loaded with intricate, heavily layered guitar melodies and awe-inspiring soundscapes that flow nearly flawlessly together. Every Red Heart contains plenty of mystifying melodies and mountainous crescendos much similar to their first release, At the Soundless Dawn (2005), yet seems to go a step further, adding more diversified layers and variety to the songs. Songs on Every Red Heart often change pace and contain a much broader range of beats and melodies. These additions make the 7-9 minute long tracks much more entertaining, avoiding issues like the sometimes monotonous and boring moments in their previous release.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Kiley has done it again!
Yes, that's right folks. Mrs. kiley has honed her depression-inducing song writing skills and now that she has teamed up with the death of Elliot Smith you will no doubt cry yourself into a coma. Songs of heartbreak, death, breaking hearts, and monkeys flinging poo will have you rolling in the aisles curled into positions that you've never dreamed of!!
4-0 out of 5 stars It's great!
Rilo Kiley is a fun band. I just heard about them, and got the More Adventurous cd from a friend, and it's great! I love it! The lyrics are so much fun to listen to, and the songs are really catchy! I definitely recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic pop music
This is, in my opinion, Rilo Kiley's best album. From beginning to end, there isn't a throwaway song and the pop hooks seem catchier and more refined than in past albums.Highlights include "Does He Love You?," "Accidental Death," "It Just Is" and "More Adventurous."

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing listen
I bought this album at the same time I bought Yoshimi by the Flaming Lips at a time when I was becoming very discouraged by modern bands and modern music in general. Jaded by those bands that sounded great upon first listen but lose their appeal after only a few spins (The Strokes being the most obvious), I decided to take a chance on these two albums I heard about from Paste Magazine (a great music mag!) and was absolutely blown away. Yoshimi was the favorite, right off the bat, but Z by MMJ just stayed with me. I would plug it in every week, listen, and hear something amazing I didn't hear before. Some new guitar solo, or subtle drum break. And so I started listening twice a week and now I listen to MMJ (not just Z, but other albums as well) at least once a day! Their music is something that has affected me on a deeper level, something that has not happened for almost 16 years (since Primal Scream's Screamadelica in 1991). Start here, then do yourself a favor and delve deeper into their back catalog and buy them all. Including their early version compilation albums which are worth the price due to the inclusion of their cover version of EJ's "Rocket Man", among others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album, it's one of their best!
I love this album and still listen to it frequently, MMJ is a great band because their music is always changing and every new album from them is like opening a new gift for Christmas.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Album of 2005!
Not much to say about this except it is the best album released in 2005! While different from previous MMJ releases, this album proves to contain the most well-crafted songs and shows the band matured, but still weird. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A SECOND SOUND ROAD TRIP? YES!
As with any road trip, one CD just ain't enough.Director Cameron Crowe often constructs music in his films as "cinematic radio stations," and the tunes in Elizabethtown have spilled onto a second disc. And a delightful one it is! The Southern rock mix features a roster divided between performers coming back (such as Ryan Adams, who scores high with the haunting "Words," specially written for the film) and those who are making their Elziabethtown soundtrack debut, such as Pinback and The Concretes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Track listing
For those of you who, like me, want to know who performed what:
5-0 out of 5 stars 15 songs. No waste. Better than Vol. 1.
You may not like all Cameron Crowe movies. As a matter of fact, I found Elizabethtown a bit dissapointing. But one thing you can't argue is that all of them carry an impeccable music selection, something that comes from Crowe's days as a write for Rolling Stone magazine. "Elizabethtown" was no exception to this, and aware of the fact, the movie saw two soundtrack volumes spinning off of it. I have found Volume 2 to be more solid than Volume 1 in general, with 15 tracks that have no waste. Topping the list are the tracks by Tom Petty, Kathleen Edwards and Ryan Adams. I give it five stars: great selections of classics and classics-to-be. ... Read more

It seems an easy task to put together a CD for a series about a funeral home...pick some songs about death and make people smirk on topic for a moment before they toss it into the soundtrack graveyard. But this is not a disc to be tossed away. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than Vol. 1
Volume 2 of the Soundtrack for "Six Feet Under" simply blows Volume 1 out by going a step beyond what its predecessor did. Incorporating a balanced combination of the best of the indie world at the time of its release (Death Cab for Cutie, The Arcade Fire, Interpol, etc.) with a handful of recent classics (Radiohead's "Lucky" and Coldplay's "Rush of Blood to the Head") and an opening track by Nina Simone from 1965, the album brings great memories from an even greater TV show that we will miss sorely.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Soundtrack
Nice CD. I always liked the effort the producers upt into choosing music for the show, as music helps immensely in creating emotions. All of the other reviewers' comments were right on the money with regards to this album, and I am happy I own both volumes of this soundtrack (Wish each season would have released a collection, but I guess that hardline aficionados can piece together their own favorites...) Sorry to see the show end, but alas, Everything Does.

3-0 out of 5 stars i wish it weren't the end
lots of songs are good in this soundtrack. i wish there could be another one following this one. because it's been better then the first soundtrack. all the music in this one is so pure and eager to tell people how good it is to be alive. ... Read more
