    Editorial Review

This soundtrack to the hit TV series starts off with a melancholy ballad by Denver's the Fray (fittingly titled "How to Save a Life"), but the well-curated CD isn't all thoughtful adult alt-rock--reflecting the series' mood changes, it offers a wide range of modern sounds. In addition to the expected acoustical numbers (in this case, from Anya Marina, KT Tunstall, and Snow Patrol's live version of "Chasing Cars"), the album reaches across genres and continents to offer the sunny-'60s-pop vibe of Jim Noir's "I Me You," Jamie Lidell's electro-jazzy "Multiply," the edgy punky-pop aggro of Metric, the rambunctious "Sexy Mistake" from the Chalets, and the winning singalong misanthropy of singer-songwriter Foy Vance's "I Hate Everyone." Ursula 1000's Alex Gimeno lightens up the proceedings with one of his trademark upbeat, hip-gyrating numbers (which seems to pay tribute to Serge Gainsbourg's "Comic Strip"), while the Moonbabies' sweet, swirling harmonies deliver the kind of perfectly crafted pop we've come to expect from the Swedes. If this compilation turns people on to these deserving acts, it will have done its job. Read more

All of your reviews I have to agree with. But there is a song that I believe isn't on the CD for Greys. I don't know the exact title for it. But it was in the episode with the bomb. It was Breath, or Just Breath. Can someone please find out the title so that I may purchase this.
3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much better
Overall there are some great songs on here and then there are some that had me changing the track to the next song.In my opinion, Vol 2 is not as good as Vol 1.Would have been alot better if Breathe was on here. That was the best scene in the entire 2nd season of GA.Shame on you Anna Nalick and GA for not putting that song on here!!!

    Editorial Review

Capitol raised a few eyebrows when they signed indie stalwarts the Decemberists. There's nothing blatantly commercial about the Portland quintet, from Colin Meloy's quavery voice and hyper-literate lyrics to the band's wide-ranging music, which encompasses baroque pop, prog rock, and dozens of other styles. Then again, he did once sing, "I was made for the stage," and those who've seen the group live know this to be true. Sure, they're storytellers, but they're entertainers, too--just not in the Top 40 sense. Never ones to play it safe, their major label debut takes its inspiration from a Japanese folk tale. It travels from the Replacements-style balladry of "The Crane Wife 3"--which joins words like "Each feather it fell from skin/'Til threadbare while she grew thin" to the melody from "Here Comes a Regular"--to the ELP hoedown of three-part epic "The Island" to the haunting duet between Meloy and Laura Veirs on "Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)." It's an impressively eclectic effort that somehow manages to avoid sounding scattered. Co-produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and Tucker Martine (the Long Winters), the Decemberists' fourth full-length is richer, less immediately catchy than its predecessor (there's nothing as bouncy here as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars They've Done It Again
I've been counting down the days till October 3rd, and when it finally arrived, I bribed my mom with cleaning my room to go to NYC Virgin Records and get me the new Decemberists album. I put it on my CD player, and I may hav had a small corinary stroke. I love all of Colin Meloy's stuff, including all the old albums and tarkio etc etc. but this CD was great. It still had that Decemberists backround, but was a little more poppy and maybe more major record label-ish. All I know, is that "The Crance Wife 3" and "Sons and Daughters" and "Summersong" will be my most played songs on my ipod within the next 2 months.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slight Disappointment
I really set myself up to be disappointed with The Crane Wife cause I bought the pre-release hype. After reading all the good words, I was expecting to be blown away. Then after a couple of listens I realized I had had tricked myself. The Decemberists aren't the kind of band that blows people away. The Decemberists are a band that charms you and soothes you with loving songcraft and theatrical whimsy. Crane Wife didn't inject directly into my blood stream like the infectious Picaresque (my first of the band's CDs). In fact, some two weeks later, Crane Wife is still slowly soaking in. I dont hear the adventuresome and free spirited Decemberists I've grown to love. In fact Collin even seems a little more uncertain in his singing on Crane Wife. Not the lyrics, just the execution. "When the War Came", "Yankee Bayonet" and "Shankhill Butchers" are standouts. 4 stars is being nice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't like this cd you're a fool
To start, I find that whenever I mention Grey's Anatomy to a co-worker or friend, they ALWAYS say, " I LOVE that show!! And the music is SOOOO GOOOOOOD!!" You can't hit the nail on the head more than that. Grey's Anatomy prides itself on good music, so to say this cd is bad, well, that's just poor taste. If you go to the Grey's Anatomy website, they go so far as to list every song they're played on every episode. If there's a song you want and you know the episode, go to the website and track it down, I promise you it will only take a few minues.
3-0 out of 5 stars Best Song Left Out
I can't believe they put together this CD and left off what I thought was the best song they used in the entire first season.Unfortunately, I do not know the title or the artist.I'm hoping someone else might be able to provide that information. All I remember is that the song was played in the very first episode (if I'm not mistaken) when Dr. Shepherd chose Melissa for the OR to operate on the teen beauty queen's aneurism.I only recall the repeated line of "put your hands in the fire".Any help?
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
I am a huge fan of Grey's Anatomy, and one of the best parts of the show for me is the music. So when the soundtrack came out, I was really excited, even though I was really only familiar with about two of the songs they included. The first time I listened to it, I fell in love with a few of the songs, but a few of the others took awhile for me to get used to.The songs are all very different, with a wide variety of sounds and voices that you don't hear much on the radio, and it works. It is now my very favorite cd and I listen to it more than the rest of my cd's combined. It's that good. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I got this CD because I loved their radio hits "Bring Me To Life" and "My Immortal." While those songs are beautiful, they are not representative of the rest of the album. Although I tried and tried to get into this CD, the hard rock teen goth style just isn't my cup of tea, and the lyrics are too depressing. If you are a fan of bands such as Linkin Park or Seether, you might enjoy this. However, if you only like "My Immortal" and "Bring Me To Life" because of Amy's powerful vocals, you'd be better off listening to Tori Amos or Sarah McLachlan.

4-0 out of 5 stars October music
What else can I add that the other reviews haven't already said? For me music usually unlocks feelings and emotions that very often are tied to places in time and seasons. This album feels like October in Maine to me. October is without a doubt the best month there is and if you ever have to be in Maine, October is the best time to be there. This album evokes the early twilight and cool breezes coming off Casco Bay, moving through the autumn leaves. Really an amazing album. Amy Lee is an amazing vocalist and I'd recommend this album to anyone who has an inner goth.

While this is a great collection of earlier R.E.M., I would have rather seen a box set including the IRS material, live songs, and b-sides.The 2 CD offering is far too skimpy for this band.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection
This is a good buy for new listeners as well as old fans. It's good to hear the early stuff in a collection like this.Brings back many memories and recreates many moods.I am disappointed by recent REM recordings, but we always have music like this to appreciate.A must even for diehards.Nice packaging, too, with comments on many of the songs by the band members included in the accompanying booklet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Sound quality- Remastering gone very wrong
This is really sad, this is an otherwise excellent collection. But in today's quest for everything to be LOUD, the over compressed this so that it's lost almost all dynamic range, and is just stressfull to listen to. You hear things you never did before-- BECAUSE THAT WEREN"T SUPPOSED TO STAND OUT IN THE MIX!Everything just stays at the same level, it sounds like there are some phase issues on some tracks as well.

    Editorial Review

When an indie-rock band as intimately and fiercely loved as Death Cab for Cutie makes the inevitable major-label jump, it often telegraphs a painful death. Witness Husker Du, the Replacements, Nirvana--hell, even R.E.M. After a successful four-album run on tiny Seattle imprint Barsuk, however, Death Cab for Cutie just might buck the trend on its Atlantic premiere. Yes, you can grumble about the production (a little too slick), the proportion of ballads (a little too many) and the overall feeling of restraint (a little too much), but ultimately the album delivers everything the group does best in emotional, experimental songs such as "What Sarah Said" and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," which both blend stark lyrical details with acoustic guitars and soft-focus electronics. In "Soul Meets Body," meanwhile, songwriter Ben Gibbard has come up with the kind of blissful, beatific pop song that's capable of disarming even the harshest skeptic. "A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere," he sings. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable
"Plans" is a subtle but crucial development for Death Cab For Cutie. While the songwriting approach is recognisable from their previous albums, their production has opened up - the music sounds wider, richer, and their palette of sound is far wider.
    1-0 out of 5 stars A heart-breaking disappointment...
I'm not going to say I'm a long-time Death Cab fan, but my fondness for the band has led me through their entire catalogue, from Transatlanticism all the way back to You Can Play These Songs With Chords, my personal favorite being We Have The Facts... I tend to prefer lo-fi indie rock, though the sheer strength of Death Cab's songwriting kept me a fan up through Trans.
4-0 out of 5 stars Transatlanticism wasn't as good as this...
DCFC has really peaked with this one.A solid performance through and through, this one is more enjoyable from start to finish than their last album was. They received a lot of radio airplay for a couple of the songs off of this one and it was well-deserved as they finally received national attention. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars His best record
One song in particular, JOHN WAYNE GACY JR, is startling. The first few times I played the CD, without really listening to the lyrics, I heard it as a love song, due to the gorgeous minor-key melody, then only realized later what it was about. The song is eerily beautiful, and at the same time, stunningly creepy, about the love a serial killer feels for his victims."He dressed up like a clown for them."I wasn't aware that pop music could do something as complex as this, until Stevens did so.

1-0 out of 5 stars Recycled goods
Having listened to Steven's previous albums, Greetings from Michigan and Seven Swans countless times, I cannot help but to notice the amount of regurgitation on this album.Stevens blatantly rips off his own music.I consider Michigan to be Sufjan's masterpiece.Do yourself a favor and start there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rewards with time and patience.
Ok where to begin. I am some what astonished by the few reviews I have read for this album that have been negative (i.e. 2 stars or lower). Not because "oh these people are idiots, or this music is just to much for them" but precisely the opposite reason. There were a few reviews that were 2 stars or lower from people who wrote somewhat intelligent and thoughtful comments. My advice to these people is to just give this some time to sink in. I know that it is not above these people, and If they give it a few extra listens it will eventually catch them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Once again fooled by the wannabee critics!
I got burned again. I thought Snow Patrol's "Final Straw" would be a 4 star rating, which meant it would be a good buy. Instead, I get a CD that does not have what it takes to be seriously impressed. I read one review that claimed it was perfect in every way (really!) and the emotion and enthusiasm of such and others that follow made me buy this CD. One or two songs perhaps but not the CD I expected. They are an average band but certainly lacking the genius that some of the better groups have. From now on I will try to read between the lines when using people's review to make my purchasing of music decisions. Yes, I sound like a whiner and probably I am when it comes to being let down. Do not get me wrong, I usually value the good advice of individuals such as myself that share their opinions. Some of these opinions are awesome, right on the money! Then again, I do understand that for one listener it might be the most beatiful thing to hit the airwaves and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Where I get confused is when I read the average stars of the reviewers and they say 4 or more stars. Then I like to believe this is something special, perhaps to be bought immediately. Sadly, this is not the case of Snow Patrol's "Final Straw". Adjectives like boring, uneventful, average come to mind, nothing to write home about it, that is for sure! Just telling it like I feel them, I love music, can't live without it and I am forever on the look for originality, talent and awesome performers. There are far and few, but Snow Patrol does not fit the bill. 3* at the most.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice
Why isn't this band more popular? They remind me of Keane, Reindeer Section (they share members), Pete Yorn (I'd swear the second track is by him), and early Radiohead. The whole album is good but tracks one and two are standouts.Someone already said this in their review but I'll say it again; it's beautiful and melodic. The album zips by and you're left saying, "wow".

5-0 out of 5 stars Zach Braff REALLY knows what rocks.
The soundtrack CD to Zach Braff's "Garden State" pulls an impressive double coup: simultaneously it's one of the best movie soundtrack CDs of recent years and also one of the best rock music compilations. There isn't a single dud song on this disc, and several of them--such as "In the Waiting Line" (Zero 7), "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" (Colin Hay), "Blue Eyes" (Cary Brothers), "One of These Things First" (Nick Drake), "Such Great Heights" (Iron and Wine), and "Let Go" (Frou Frou) have become favorites of mine. Braff also does music listeners everywhere a vital service by reviving "The Only Living Boy in New York," probably the least known of the truly great Simon & Garfunkel songs. The soundtrack to "Garden State" is not only great listening on its own, but it succeeds spectacularly in doing what every soundtrack CD ought to do: it makes me want to see the movie again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest sound track ever
So, my girlfriend and I saw this movie some time ago and fell in love instantly. Half way through the movie we knew that we had to buy this sound track. I mean seriously, Ive never heard one better. If this is your kind of music, you will love almost every song on this CD. There is only 1 we seem to agree not to like, but that should in no way stop you from getting all the other great tracks from this album. Now when we watch the movie, every song that comes on we have to jump up and say "that's my favorite" from the opening scene to the end credits. Listening to this sound track will truely make this movie one of your favorites, if it wasnt already. A+ in my book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine collection!
Selected by the actor/director and writer himself - Zach Bach, he did an impressive job of hand picking songs that embodied the emotional fine points of the movie. Not only do these tracks magnificently harmonize the movie, the songs complement each other seamlessly, and when put together, it created something fantastic as if the tracks should have never been apart to begin with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strange, twisted, and funny
The second I heard the song, "Crows," I knew I had to own this album.I know nothing of Lemony Snicket books, but I've a been a Magnetic Fields fan for awhile. So, after very awkwardly browsing the childrens' section at the bookstore, I was able to find a copy of this really great album.I was very happily surprised to find that this CD is more in line with Merritt's great early nineties albums (like Holiday, Wasps' Nests, and The New Despair) rather than i or (shudder) Showtunes. This is a great mix of synths and traditional instruments (if you consider an electric sitar "traditional").The lyrics are very depressing/weird/funny/moving depending on the song, though some are all four.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Gothic Archies' strongest outing yet...
...and one of Stephin Merritt's most memorable, and by far the funniest. On this album he is doing what he does best: being a glum old curmudgeon-popster with tongue wedged squarely in cheek. No knowledge of the Lemony Snicket books is needed. There are a number of direct references in several of the songs, but the lyrics stand on their own quite well, particular in numbers such as Freakshow, Shipwrecked, How Do You Slow This Thing Down?, and A Million Mushrooms.Expect an expertly crafted mixture of glum yet surprisingly catchy arrangements coupled with more of Merritt's hilariously morose lyrics.Highly recommended! ... Editorial Review

Immaculately prolific and blatantly ambitious, My Morning Jacket celebrate eight years as a recording band with what many refer to as a death knell: the double live album. Yet it takes but a single listen to declare that the brass neck and bravado pays off for this Kentucky band of longhairs, which released the 21-song epic as a companion piece to their concert DVD. Songwriter and singer Jim James's howling falsetto ricochets through MMJ's backlog of songs, which have been reenergized for the stage by the band's airtight live-show mettle. Dusting off remnants of the first two records like "I Think I'm Going to Hell" and the stunning "The Way That He Sings," then lining them up with the more contemporary "Gideon" and "What a Wonderful Man," MMJ never take their foot off the gas. In fact, rather than getting bogged down in concert-album fashion, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live albums of all-time ****1/2
My Morning Jacket is an incredible band.I knew I could always count on them to release a solid psychedelic, southern rock record. But when "Z" came out in 2005, I was absolutely speechless; there was finally a band in the United States to compete with Radiohead, and incidentally, "Z" is probably the best album released since "Ok Computer."It took the band to a whole new level. They went from being solid to superstars; from doing obscure music magazine interviews to releasing a concert in indie theaters across the country.
5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate live album from the best live act these days
My Morning Jacket has steadily been climbing the commercial and critical recongition in the last 6 years, with 2005's "Z" album ranking easily as one of the best albums of last year. MMJ has built its reputation as a tireless live act, and finally MMJ releases a live album, and what a joy it is.
5-0 out of 5 stars JamBase CD Review
The whole idea of a live album can be a bit tricky for all bands, especially for a great band like the Kentucky boys of My Morning Jacket. Let's face it - out of all the groundbreaking artists of the past 40 years who've cut a live one, about 90 percent of them seem to be sub-par. And no, the live downloaded Phish and .moe bootlegs that you listened to in your college dorm while sucking on a glass Jerome Baker piece don't count. Sure, the concerts at which they were recorded must've been enjoyable for the fans, but it can be very taxing when attempting to capture the essence of what it's like being there as a concertgoer in that exact moment. A double-disc album, Okonokos was recorded last November during a two-night stint at The Fillmore in San Francisco, while touring in support of their latest release Z, which was on many critics' year-end top ten lists. Okonokos exhibits the majestic semblance of MMJ's live shows and proves that they are not a jam band but instead a band that just knows how to jam.

5-0 out of 5 stars To Expand Your Musical Horizons (Or At Least To Expand Mine)
I adored this CD. Being a huge Gilmore Girls fan I asked for this for my birthday as I had no money, and have not regretted it. I can listen to it over and over without getting sick of it, and I never want to skip a track, though I have my preferences (Clear Spot, One Line, I'm The Man Who Murdered Love, Human Behaviour, Where You Lead I Will Follow, I Don't Mind, It's Alright, Baby, God Only Knows). I was pleased to hear that I agreed with Rory on Child Psychology - I liked it because it made me 'gloomy'. I also love Sam Phillips and the 'la-la' music from the show, and the cues make great transitions on this CD, just as they do in between scenes. I'm ashamed to say I hardly knew any of this music before watching Gilmore Girls, but this CD has made me want albums by every artist on here, so that's probably what my next birthday list will consist of.

3-0 out of 5 stars Our Little Corner of the World: Music From Gilmore Girls
The CD provides the themes heard on Gilmore Girls and that is interesting. However, I was looking for something more such as music referred to by Lorelai, Rory and Lane. As an example, it might have had "Shadow Dancing". It is not a CD I would RIP to a hard drive for inclusion with an evening of music. I would have a hard time playing the CD more than the three times I have played it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gilmore Girls Rock
I loved the CD. The main reason I bought the CD is that my 8 month old daughter loves the music during the episodes. I own the 1st 4 seasons on DVD and we are just about out of shows to watch. She loves the opening song and the closing credits. The only thing I was upset over was that the closing credits were not on the CD. Otherwise, it is a CD that will rock in our household for years to come. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Deathcab for Snoozie - whining set to music
I'm an indie rock fan but I guess I'm just not at all an "emo" fan.Every time I hear emo I think of whining set to music. This disc has a few catchy songs ("Title and Registration", "The Sound of Settling" stand out) but the rest of it is just so slow as to put me into a coma.If that's the desired effect then OK, but just not for me.I don't mind slow songs and think most good discs have a mix of uptempo and downtempo songs but the downtempo is just too heavy here.It doesn't suck by any means, just not my sort of stuff. The lyrics are good, but it doesn't overcome the overall mood.I worry about this generation if this sort of music represents their overall mood - things aren't that bad - wait til you get older and you'll see.Go listen to punk rock or something...

3-0 out of 5 stars meh
Pure magic my a%!.This CD like the other Death Cab has a couple fantastic songs but it doesn't make the album 5 stars.Get the singles from the apple store and you're set.Don't waste your money on the full album unless it's 50% off.

5-0 out of 5 stars The crossing to Atlantic
Does anyone else find it ironic that DCfC's album before they switched to Atlantic Records is called Transatlanticism?Oh well....
