Editorial Review

If you are an artist at a crossroads/ "maturing point" in your career, it's a great idea to seek out the original musicians who played on music you adore and that inspire you greatly–it's the opposite of what Rick Rubin does with the old folks. The results, however, are often lackluster; it can just be too hard to forge a connection in a short period of time with studio dudes twenty to thirty years older than you. Chan Marshall, who took just three years between albums this time, returned to Memphis to record with many of the architects of Southern soul music at Ardent Studios on Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overproduced, but still better then most
This is an ok album, but i dont think its going to be the album that makes her go main stream or anything. She has done better with less help in the studio.

3-0 out of 5 stars A strange new direction
It's been released for a while now, so if you were going to do it, you would have done it already, but if you like her other stuff I would dissuade you from buying Cat Power's latest album "The Greatest".

This album has a few terrific songs, such as "New Born", "Bliss", "Plug in Baby", and
4-0 out of 5 stars Music to make your blood run cold
Terrifying and loveless music. This album's baroque drive and brilliant use of classical forms bring a theatrical excess to its despair. All the cruelty and luxury of the eighteenth century are here. The castrato "Micro Cuts" is excoriating - one can almost see the Marquis de Sade watching from the gallery. Debates about "Radiohead" or "not Radiohead" are missing the point. This is "progressive rock" in the very best sense.
3-0 out of 5 stars No match for "Absolution"...
Having highly enjoyed "Absolution", I figured "Origin of Symmetry" would be equally good. Though you can hear some of the musical seeds that resulted in "Absolution" in this album, they simply were not ripe yet and sound nowhere as good as the band's landmark production, released three years later. I would say pass on this album and, if you haven't, get yourself a copy of "Absolution" instead. ... Read more

Editorial Review

As charming as the McGarrigle Sisters and pulsating as a scaled-down Lucious Jackson, Los Angeles duo The Ditty Bops call upon a 20th century grab bag of musical trends for the dozensongs that make up their eccentric debut album. Abby DeWald (vocals, acoustic guitar) and Amanda Barrett (vocals, mandolin, dulcimer) employ their effortless harmonies as instruments as they sashay through an influential spectrum that spans Bix Beiderbecke’s swinging twenties, through the Hot Club Quintet of France by way of Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys, and into the contemporary experimentation of producer Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Suzanne Vega). The lyrics may never garner a Walt Whitman prize ("Why does blood turn brown when it dries?" and "Why can’t white people play the blues?" the Bops wonder in "Wishful Thinking"), but they do offer the perfect, sing-a-long complement for the twosome’s intoxicating, foot-tapping melodies. Give the record three spins. You’ll know every song. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars an interesting mix
The Ditty Bops are not your typical folk duo, nor are they your typical rock duo or even Vaudeville duo, what they are is something truly unique in a world of Brittney Spears wannabes. At a time when the music industry is stamping out electronic beat, sound sampled pre-recorded tracks and you can't tell one American Idol from the next the Ditty Bops depart the scene and as Martha would say "That's a good thing". This music is thoughtfull, playfull, fun, acerbic, sarcastic, and most important original. They are unafraid to be who they are and to buck all the trends. This duo was clearly not assembled by a Madison Avenue focus group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Stop Listening
I got both of their CDs the other day and I can't stop listening. They're edgy and innocent, sweet and sophisticated. And their lyrics turn me inside out. What's more, the Ditty Bops are on a concert tour--and traveling by bicycle.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't-y Bops
Sit around in your living room with your friends sometime, just kind of noodle with some songs, tell some jokes, put on a funny hat or two. Somebody will no doubt say "Gee, you guys should think about recording a CD!" This is what happened to the Ditty Bops, and as fate would have it, they listened to their friends and said "Gee, OK!" Holy Cripes!!! I couldn't return this CD to the library fast enough! What is played among friends should sometimes stay in the living room. Listening to the commentators on NPR radio is more fun than this. Nothing to get excited about here, folks. Pass it by.... ... Read more

Editorial Review

For their latest, Akron, Ohio duo The Black Keys have brought forth an EP of six songs by Junior Kimbrough. This is no mere dalliance; the late elder Mississippi blues musician was a powerful influence on guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Their three previous albums, full of dusty grooves and simple but impassioned dynamics, would have found strong rapport with Kimbrough, who unfortunately died before they could ever meet. However, his widow, Mildred gives her passionate endorsement for these performances in the form of a short phone message that appears at the end of the disc. Among the highpoints is "Meet Me in the City," which positively shimmers as the plaintive vocal soars over a virato-ed guitar. The Black Keys, besides paying their heartfelt respects, also demonstrate the breadth and durability of Kimbrough's music. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good band...decent recording.
OK, well I don't normally write Amazon reviews but this one needs it. OK, first off I am a Black Keys fan, although I only own their debut The Big Come Up. I really enjoy that album. This one seemed to me to be a similar endeavor to their aforementioned album. Needless to say I thought it would be a nice little addition to my music collection...
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Another Fantastic BK Album
Everything these guys have put out is gold.If your favorite White Stripes song is Ball and Biscuit you'll love the Black Keys.I recommend starting with the Big Come Up and working your way through the albums to this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding piece of work
This is a brilliant release. I have been itching for a new Black Keys release since getting a hold of The Rubber Factory and this EP is every bit as satisfying(if not more so) than a fullLP of new original Keys material.

Sincere but not too sincere, cute but not gorgeous, and smart enough to know to steal from the very best, former skateboard pro Matt Costa signed to surfer Jack Johnson's label on the strengths of some very workman-like pop songs and a smooth, appealing voice. Goldilockses of the world are bound to find Costa's unassuming songs just right--and if his work fails to find its way onto the soundtracks of all the hottest television shows, there is little justice in the world. Costa may croon that "These are the songs that I sing/To make the day better," but these really aren't songs so much as they're rock & roll equations. The dude combines the anglophilic sonority of Belle & Sebastian and Donovan with a taste of Elliott Smith's gorgeous downer vibe, heaping doses of the Beatles thrown in throughout. It's pleasantly chiming enough stuff to be sure: it'll just be far more interesting to see what happens once Costa has worked his way through his influences. Read more

These songs are catchy.Real catchy. He writes how he feels and those just happen to be really good songs."Sunshine" burrows a hole into your memory and leaves you a nice gift. Not a bad song on the album. He channels some Johnny Cash, keeps it light with "Sweet Rose" and makes you wish for winter time with "Cold December."
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
Matt Costa has got the talent and chops and this CD is enjoyable. He does need to break the mold a bit, however. There is nothing earth-shattering here - - just good folk/pop that is nice on the ears.Next time, I hope he tires to be a bit more original.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Costa/Johnson?

Failing students have had such an influential role in shaping rock & roll that it's easy to give the bookworm segment short shrift. Witness the vital contributions from the likes of Ray Davies, the Zombies, and Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Magnum--the kind of smartypants songwriters with whom the Decemberists' Colin Meloy is often compared. The second full-length CD from Portland, Oregon's Decemberists certainly posits Meloy near the top of the current crop of literate indie rockers. Meloy is the brother of author Maile Meloy and a fellow whom one concludes has his own well-worn library card. Eschewing conventional pop-song subject matter, he delves deep into the past for his narratives and even his lexicon, witness "Shanty for the Arethusa," the high-seas opener, and "The Chimbley Sweep," which recalls the Zombies' similarly dark-hued "Butcher's Tale." Though the subject matter is frequently dire and the approach is lyrically erudite, one shouldn't conclude that listening to Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Exotic Shanty Tunes and a Little Thing Called "TRUST"
I'll confess to having been a little trepidatious in giving HER MAJESTY a spin. After having heard the glorious success of CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS, this second Decemberists' disc seemed ripe for a sophomore jinx. And after listening to the lead track, the almost willfully obtuse "Shanty for the Arethusa," I was not encouraged.
4-0 out of 5 stars Your day will come, indeed
Ah, to soar with the whirlwind love affair that is a Decemberists album... it's certainly something else. Indie to the last accordion, Colin Meloy and his motley band of maudlin musicians set out to top their phenomenal CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS - without success, I'm afraid, but that doesn't mean that this isn't worth a listen every bit as much as its predecessor is, because it is! This album marks the milestone of that nail-biter that is the sophomore record - will it slump? Impale itself on the swords of music critics everywhere, wither away and die in the back of the CD racks at Sam Goody? Or will it shine? Actually, HER MAJESTY is my beacon at sea.
5-0 out of 5 stars To all the people who bash this record...
Aren't we all but the sums of our influences? Not listening to these guys because Neutral Milk Hotel "already did it" is stupid. You might as well not listen to Willie Nelson because Johnny Cash "already did it."

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Beck CD
Combine the best of Beck's quirky lyrics that are damn funny, insightful, and flow fast and furious, with his best ballads filled with a tension that draws you in everytime, and you get his best rock with an energy that pummels you with melodies both brutal and catchy. The CD never lets you escape its world. This masterpiece may get a few songs in the future that match its brilliance, but his debut is one of the best CD's ever.If you enjoy music this CD must be in your collection.Recommended without question.

You just need one look at Rob Zombie to know that the guy knows a thing or two about Halloween. He really proves his mettle--and his metal, for that matter--on this loud, garish, downright fun collection of rip-roaring devil's music. There's actually very little to be afraid of, to tell the truth--unless, that is, you have a phobia about the kind of goofy good times laid down by Zombie and pals like Rocket from the Crypt, Satan's Pilgrims, and the wrestling-masked power-surf combo Los Straitjackets (who turn in a hypercharged "Munsters Theme"). The garishly groovy package, which features some of Zombie's most over-the-top cartoon illustrations, is rife with haunting hoedowns like the Dead Elvi's "The Creature Stole My Surfboard." More fun than a coven meeting any day. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute disappointment - BEWARE!
I am a huge fan of Enigma and have all four of their previous albums, which are absolutely excellent. This is why I was so disappointed with this one.It is random and directionless and much of it sounds like individual band members tuning up.The entire album is pervaded by a supremely annoying, harsh, distorted electronic sound that grates on the ears.It seems to me that in this music Michael Cretu has become a modern-day German full of Angst and self pity that no one could care less about.Boredom and annoyance are the two lasting impressions of this album.

3-0 out of 5 stars With a name like Voyageur you'd think you would be going somewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Same Style, New Sound
I liked Enigma becoause their sound was different from the mainstream. In this album they step away form the more ambient relaxing sound of their past works. They venture into more of an upbeat sound yet it is still relaxing and refreshing to here, and in keeping with their past works they still manage to be different. I have been a fan of electronica music and trust DJ Tiesto, 4 Strings, Ian Van Dahl, and their likes can't touch this stuff though ATB kind of comes close, but not quite. It is something truely unique as Enigma has always been.

If you're not accustomed to Juana Molina's otherworldly, electro-folk musings, be patient. The Argentinean singer's artful approach to music may initially be off-putting to listeners who like their world music bright and bubbly, simple and shiny. Molina's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album!
I heard a brief review and snippets from this album on NPR and was very intrigued--enough to pick it up on Amazon.I wanted to pick it up that day, but I couldn't find it elsewhere. It was worth the wait!Haunting, melodic, lots of different influences, and infinitely listenable. At the top of my current playlist.I have sent it out as a must have to several friends who have all thanked me for the recommendation. Now, I am going to check out her other albums.

On the surface, any similarities between what is commonly and reductively termed "folk" music (i.e., anything song-based and acoustic guitar-driven) and "electronica" (formless composition, laptops, synths, beats, bloops, etc.) seem tangential at best. Those who scoff at the notion of "folktronica" (or at least the term) have been given plenty of fodder over the last decade to justify their scorn. I'm thinking of the practice of gussying up already-finished acoustic guitar-driven songs with current-sounding electronic beats and hastily packaging them for public consumption.
5-0 out of 5 stars Juana's Most Mysterious
Juana Molina has been putting quiet Folktronica jewels for a while now. Not renouncing her Argentinean moods, Molina chooses here to explore wilder shores of Folk, somewhat reminiscent of Animal Collective, or Devendra Banhart in subdued moments.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than muse
Mew is another UK band that hasn't been tested yet on American shores. We will be seeing them soon enough with their tour with Bloc Party. So far so good. They have a dramatic flair in their music that is more like Muse (Mew, Muse, hmm). The vocals are very pleasant. Mew is very hard to pigeonhole. They are a very modern sounding band, that reminds me a little of shoegazer bands. Some people in America don't know what to make of these sorts of bands. They are not so much a Coldplay type of band, but neither are they like The Subways or Franz Ferdinand. Mew should be given a chance. I will be seeing them no doubt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Damn Fine Album
These guys are great. The album is very melodic and catchy yet it still has quite a bit of muscle.Stylistically, they cover alot of ground, yet they manage to keep the album consistent and not too overbearingly ecclectic. If you like this album then you may like:

Split the difference between Sigur Ros and My Morning Jacket, and you'll get the Danish band Mew.Singer Jonas Bjerre has a high range and wistfulness that recall Sigur Ros, as does the band's use of big uplifting synthesizer string chords on some songs. But the overall sound is more pop and accessible. The band has been together for a decade now, and it shows in the tight playing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a Continuing Music Revolution
The late 90s/early 00s have brought a stream of a few unusually talented "garage rock" bands. These bands generally use lo-fi recording equipment as opposed to making everything digital. The rawness of sound is preserved and making music for music's sake is emphasized, as opposed to commercial fame alone. Mainstream music still consists of mass-produced pop, rap, and hip-hop for the most part, however unfortunate that may be. However, there are times when genuinely good bands are able to slip through, on to the radio and hopefully are able to attract the attention of enough people in order to sell albums and concert tickets. The Strokes happened to debut at the right time.
5-0 out of 5 stars There both great but...
First of all let me just say this: "New York City Cops" is way better than "When It Started".
4-0 out of 5 stars Is this it? Why yes it is.
I had to listen to this album a few times before I started to like it a lot, but as of now I'd say it's a very well put-together CD. The Strokes are a fairly unique band it seems, often having distinctive traits like a subtle effect applied to the vocals, electronic drum beats, and making their guitars sound like they do in the beginning of "Someday" (no other band that I know of has guitars that sound like that). Although I'm much fonder of The Strokes' work on "First Impressions of Earth", this album as well as "Room On Fire" both have an admirably mild intensity of rock which allows one to enjoy the simple components of the melodies as you cruise from song to song. It's certainly not mild enough to be called peaceful, however, since many of the tracks have loud vocals, prominent guitars, and the occasional swear word, but is good for when you're not in the mood for headbanging types of CDs. The Strokes are a great alternative band with plenty of good jams to offer, and this album will likely show you that if thou givest it a chance. I would give Is This It four stars and would highly recommend the songs on here "Hard to Explain", and "Trying Your Luck". ... Read more

French duo Air's debut album is a superlatively happy collection of experimental disco-mood sound nestled between ambient soundscape and breathy pop. It's jazzy and melodic, and mostly laid-back, but not excessively so. There are a few shake-it, shake-it numbers, too, like the absurdly daft hit "Sexy Boy." It's snap your fingers and hang out (while reading) music or dance around sexy-slow with your mate music. It's also the perfect music to do your ironing or some other chore to; it's hypnotizing wallpaper music. It slips in and out of your consciousness, forcing you to move around with a relaxed smile before you even realize it. Oh, and contrary to sampler fashion, Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel played the instruments themselves. Bravo. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't take me to the moon
this album just really didn't do it for me. i looove loooove loooove looooooooove Zero 7 and there are many comparisons of Air to Zero 7 and vice versa. but Zero 7 just has a better execution of their music and just kinda has this magic that Air doesn't possess.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best CD I've ever heard OR owned in my life.
It's the CD that keeps on giving, and giving, and giving! I bought this CD 8 years ago, and it STILL sounds fresh and current, Air actually made a timeless record the likes of "OK Computer". Serious. Whenever I buy a new CD case for my car, it's AUTOMATIC to keep the first space open for "Moon Safari". Whether you're driving at night, chilling with your chick/guy, throwing a party, or just feeling reflective, you won't find a better album then "Moon Safari".

5-0 out of 5 stars woth it just for "La Femme D'Argent"
I bought this CD after hearing the tune "La Femme D'Argent" as the background music on a very funny youtube video. These guys make some awesome music with old-school electronic instruments - moog, vocorder, etc.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Different is Better . . .
Persephone's Bees is not like the rest of the music out there right now, but it is not so shockingly different that it is difficult to listen to for any period of time.It has a kind of mod dance quality to it while still being very modern in tone and sound. When you listen to this cd your going to have a hard time sitting still . . . which to me is a really good quality. If you like your music a little different from the norm and like albums that you can listen to all they way through without a lot of skipping around this is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars rebels in a sea of clones
in a world oversatured with 'alternative' music, it's refreshing to see a band that doesn't follow what has become the corporate 'alternative rock' formula. there's no nasily faux english vocals here, it's a real accent, and russian to boot.
