5-0 out of 5 stars Here's an exception...
In the past I've said that compilations are, as a rule, pure evil. I am willing to backtrack on those sentiments in the case of this disc, however. It's simply a great collection of songs from a great band. One can't really complain much. With the Barenaked Ladies, this should only be a jumping-off point, since they have so much great material beyond what's included here. If you're new to them, this is a great place to start.

I bought this CD prior to seeing the BNL's in concert. It has all the best songs from all their albums and it is a great mix for first time listeners. It has sold me to buy other albums by them.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Barenaked Fans Should Get This CD
I love this CD because it has most of my favorite BNL songs as well as some others that I like.I own everyone of their CDs, but there are songs on them that I just don't like to listen to.I like every song on this CD and I never have to skip around. It's great to listen to, and it's a nice addition to any BNL collection.I reccomend this CD to anyone who loves BNL, even if you already have all the CDs, and to anyone who wants to get a taste of this great band.If you don't like what you hear on this CD, try listening to one of the other albums (I love their X-mas CD).Don't be turned of from this band by reviews saying that the CD is terrible.Their an awesome band. ... Editorial Review

Chan Marshall devised the Cat Power moniker in order to put a degree of separation between herself and the often-twisted individuals who inhabit her songs. Here, she takes another step back while also taking a step forward. As the album title indicates, these are covers of other people's songs. Yet she sings them with no less intensity than if they were her own. Mick Jagger may have snarled the definitive "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," but Marshall takes a different tack. She removes the chorus and returns it as elegant slow blues. The Velvet Underground's "I Found a Reason" becomes a near-wordless cry. She relies only on her sufficient guitar picking and likeably amateurish piano tinkling, creating an isolated web not unlike that of Neil Young at his most deserted. Most appropriately, she covers "Red Apples" by Smog, whom she resembles in approach. Obscure (traditional and early) Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, and Michael Hurley tunes complement the bruised but not buried surroundings. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars She can't play em, but she can sure sing em
If you've been listening to the Cat Power album, The Greatest, you'll know that Chan Marshall makes a superb blues singer. The Covers Record, a likable collection of cover songs recorded in the late 1990s, serves as a nice introduction to Marshall's blues/folk singing style. There is no backup band on this stripped down album. Only Marshall's voice and one other instrument per song. Spare, but it gets the job done.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best way to do a cover
This album is very intriguing to me because i have not heard any Cat Power that i really like. This album gives me hope for the artist. Each cover is done in a very simplistic way where the music sounds almost nothing like the original song (except "Sea of Love bears a resemblance), and she even rearranges the lyrics and leaves parts out. This is very unique because most people do covers as close to the originals as possible, but that is boring in my opinion and all the listener does is compare it to the original, but these are unique to the original so it makes it its own song. The songs are all performed by just her and mostly are either piano or very simply guitar, but it gives it a real slow folky sound that in my mind is beautiful. I think the best song is "Naked if i want to" but i did buy the album becasue i heard "I found a reason", but there is not one bad track on the album. So check it out.

Their prospects dangerously over-inflated by pundits who often hailed their debut as nothing short of rock-messianic, New York City's Strokes got a lesson in cynical rock-press dynamics when their biz-troubled, if similarly toned, '03 follow-up was dutifully dismissed as the proverbial sophomore slump. A lesser band might have been chastened by the experience; this one responds with a third album that positively bristles with energetic challenges. Revolving around a loose concept that allows songwriter/frontman Julian Casablancas to adopt a viewpoint that's as detached as it is world-weary and bemused, it's a record that quickly trades the often precious production conceits of its forebears for a muscular confidence that's notable from the infectious, back-to-the-'80s opener "You Only Live Once" to its perfect bookend "Red Light."Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Five years after the release of "Is This It"...
...and they still haven't been able to reach the same level of greatness achieved in their debut album! Perhaps the band has made the music what they were meant to make already, and there is nothing more for them to accomplish. Then again, glimpses of the promising band they really are occasionaly appear from time to time in the third album...just with less frequency than in the first and even the second. "First Impressions of Earth" also does not have the edginess or rawness of sound present in the first two.
3-0 out of 5 stars Meh...
I'm typically quite critical with music.I listen to so much of the stuff that I've found my standards rising with every passing year.
1-0 out of 5 stars Downward spiral
Oh, man, this is rough. The debut was OK, the second was middling sophomore slump, and now, this third one is just ghastly - a real mess and a total letdown. What glimmer of talent on display on the first record has been replaced by flat, tuneless, and totally bland riffs in search of song structure and hooks that never come. Did you see the lead singer try to "sing" on SNL?Sadly, he looks cool in his para-military peacoat and touseled rockstar hair, but the guy cannot carry a tune, for real. Out of key yelping is a understatement. Just painful to listen to.Why bother?Make this CD a coaster. ... Read more

I am the same age as the Prez, and had become convinced that there hasn't been a group in the last twenty years worthy of polishing the boots of the greats of the Sixties and Seventies, at least based on what my kids listen to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
As witnessed at Lollapalooza, the new material meshes seamlessly with other essential BTS (Perfect from Now On and There is Nothing Wrong with Love, for example), putting less weight on some critics' assertions that the new material falls to the wayside of the older, "classic" BTS.

4-0 out of 5 stars BTS emerge as the wise, elderly jam band***1/2
I'm not a BTS fanatic.I've never followed them around the country, looked up anything about Doug Martsch's personal life on the internet, or any other weird, obsessive behavior concerning the band.I simply really like their music.I own the albums between "Perfect From Now On" (their best, imho) and this one.All four are fantastic, and honestly any of them could be your favorite."Perfect" is lengthy indie/prog rock."Keep it Like a Secret" is more loud indie poppish."Ancient Melodies" is pop, but with dry production for a cool, low-fi feel. And finally, "You in Reverse" is an all out jam album.

5-0 out of 5 stars virtuous among us, walk among us.....
I have to admit, I REALLY like this album.I don't own the first album yet, but I can't imagine how it can be much better than this.It took me three tries to get fully embroiled in this album.Once that happened I have been playing it non-stop.There is definitely a punk base to all their songs, but there's something about the pace of their music (ever changing, pulsatile and jagged, then smooth...) that keeps you imbalanced yet wanting more.I can't wait to try the first album.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much better!
Although I'll admit I like the eponymous album a little better, I find this album a breath of fresh air to my somewhat-jaded soul.I've seen FF on SNL and Austin City Limits; the lyrics blend very well with the music, and there's enough of the unexpected to keep me entertained.I look forward to hearing a lot more from these guys!

5-0 out of 5 stars So much better
This album is amazing. The first 7 tracks are all good, and then there is a mix amongst the last half. To think of the career of Franz Ferdinand reminds me now of the path the Cure took with Boys Don't Cry. There is a great amount of structure to each song, and nothing beats the 3-4 hits such as This Boy and Walk Away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He's All Grown Up
This is Beck's coming of age album."Loser" was a single that was designed from the bottom up to be a hit single and "Mellow Gold" landed Beck right smack center of mainstream pop culture for an entire generation. His earlier recordings, featured in an album entitled "One Foot In The Grave," were evidence enough of his musical genius.
4-0 out of 5 stars After the Turntables...
Beck is an original, but always diverse artist. After MELLOW GOLD and ODELAY, there was something else that was needed from him. MUTATIONS is the missing peice, now that Sea Change is said and done. Mutations may not be for the casual "Loser" or "Where it's at" fan, but if you find something else to Beck's music other than the surface and the singles, than MUTATIONS could be a valuable listen. It's more laid back, not so rough around the edges, and not so distorted to the listener. But what "Where it's at" did for Odelay, the haunting "Nobody's Fault But My Own" goes beyond for MUTATIONS. There are some great songs and although not as catchy as his singles, and even though you could listen to "Nobody's Fault" and "Tropicalia" by themselves; there is more in the sum of the parts than in the previous records and you can respect the album as a whole, which certainly says something.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite Beck cd
Why is this my favorite Beck cd?It is introspective, but not too self centered. There is humor here. 5-0 out of 5 stars beauty isnt the word for this album
To be honest I can't think of a word that can explain the emotional link with this album apart from it being the most beautiful sound I've heard. For me listening to this album makes me feel emotionally confused but absolutely complete at the same time, never before has an album stopped me in my tracks as firmly as this one. My favourite songs on the album are "the only moment we were alone" and "six days at the bottom of the ocean" every time my ears are blessed with these artworks I'm am fixated on nothing else but them. I literally cannot communicate with anyone or anything I just have to listen to them intently. This album is not as experimental as "those who tell the truth shall die those who tell the truth shall live forever" but I feel it is just as good and the songs are put together impeccably well, with no song being neither longer nor shorter than it has to be. I love the pure, clean sound of this album and see it as light as the wind. The trance that this album provides is indescribable; I'm not saying if you buy this album it will have this exact effect on you this description is merely from a personal note. Either way I strongly recommend this band and album to anybody who is looking for a purchase, for you can have no doubt that this album is extremely well produced, written, recorded, thought out and sounding. Buy it, you will not regret your choice one bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Minimalistic, and Sheer Post-Rock Perfection
It was hard for me to determine if this recording deserved a 4 star rating or a 5 star rating.I've been a prog fan for years but only recently did I get into post-rock material.I started off by listing to Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mountain Zion, and Sigur Ros.While impressed a times, I found some of their compositions kind of boring and repetitive after a while.I definitely wouldn't say these bands are "heavy rotation" bands in my music playback lists.

Rock & roll is constantly splintering into multiple personalities. Big radioplayers layer thick slabs of studio shine on their albums, while back-to-the-basicsrockers keep the sound so raw it rubs calluses on your ears. The White Stripes fallin the latter category. Reykjavík-based noise quartet Sigur Rós are the biggest band in their native Iceland, which should say much, much more about the collective insanity of that earthquake-ridden, blizzard-beaten crag of an island than anything to do with Sigur Rós's sound. But in their music, Sigur Rós reflect all the breathtaking glory of the Icelandic wastes--a fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty that's finally crystallized here, their debut European release. 5-0 out of 5 stars Do some research.
I would just like to point out that the only song on this album sung in "Hopelandic" is the eighth track, "Olsen Olsen". All of the other tracks (besides Intro and Avalon, with no vocals) are sung in Icelandic, meaning they have actual words with meaning. Their next album, ( ), is the only one entirely in Hopelandic, and Takk only has three songs in Hopelandic. Their debut, Von, only has one song in Hopelandic, the title track. So stop talking about your distaste for their made-up language spread all over this CD. Thanks.

Sigur Ros' debut is one of the weirdest CD's I've owned for a few years.I just listened to it the other day and I am still blown away by its awesomeness. It's sung in a made-up language by Icelandic space rockers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Achingly beautiful
The first song I heard from this album was "Viorar Vel til Loftarasa," and even years after hearing the song, there's something beautiful...and sad about listening to it, and the way the music drops out in the middle of the song, as if to illustrate a point at which someone's hope seems lost, only to build into a beautiful, triumphal sonic climax filled with strings, piano, drums and waves of oddly reassuring guitar feedback. It's one of the few songs that really evokes a concrete emotional response even without the benefit of a lyrical narrative, and most of the songs here have that same ability to resonate.I listen to everything from death metal to African folk music, and there really isn't any other group I know of that sounds quite like this.Buy it; you'll be moved. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all the sides of one of rock's greatest bands...
For a greatest hits collection, I've rarely come across one thats as good as this. If your looking to get into them, start here, it gives you all things pumpkins. I never owned any of their stuff, so if your like me and want too get a taste of them, this is the best place to start IMO. This album basically goes through all the stages that the pumpkins went through in their career. Some fans prefer different era's of the band, but this collection has all of them on here. It goes from there early stuff to when they started experimenting with electronica on the last few albums. I personally like it all, and I can start the album and let it play all the way through. I really like the flow and pace of it. If your a big pumpkins fan, this album isn't for you since you have all the albums anyways, I wouldn't say that this adds anything you don't have (unless you buy the Limited edition that has a 2ndb-side disc..). This album is for those who don't own a pumpkins album, like I was prior to purchasing this.If you were like me, buy this album, it really does give you all aspects of the pumpkins. I can honestly say that since I've listened to this album many times, I have alot more respect for the Smashing Pumpkins, they truly are one of rocks greatest bands.

Yes, that's right folks. Mrs. kiley has honed her depression-inducing song writing skills and now that she has teamed up with the death of Elliot Smith you will no doubt cry yourself into a coma. Songs of heartbreak, death, breaking hearts, and monkeys flinging poo will have you rolling in the aisles curled into positions that you've never dreamed of!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A SECOND SOUND ROAD TRIP? YES!
As with any road trip, one CD just ain't enough.Director Cameron Crowe often constructs music in his films as "cinematic radio stations," and the tunes in Elizabethtown have spilled onto a second disc. And a delightful one it is! The Southern rock mix features a roster divided between performers coming back (such as Ryan Adams, who scores high with the haunting "Words," specially written for the film) and those who are making their Elziabethtown soundtrack debut, such as Pinback and The Concretes.

5-0 out of 5 stars 15 songs. No waste. Better than Vol. 1.
You may not like all Cameron Crowe movies. As a matter of fact, I found Elizabethtown a bit dissapointing. But one thing you can't argue is that all of them carry an impeccable music selection, something that comes from Crowe's days as a write for Rolling Stone magazine. "Elizabethtown" was no exception to this, and aware of the fact, the movie saw two soundtrack volumes spinning off of it. I have found Volume 2 to be more solid than Volume 1 in general, with 15 tracks that have no waste. Topping the list are the tracks by Tom Petty, Kathleen Edwards and Ryan Adams. I give it five stars: great selections of classics and classics-to-be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why all the hate?
Radiohead is my favorite band, but I'm not giving this album 5 stars because of that. I'm giving it 5 stars because it's a GOOD record. It may be another electronic album like Kid A, but it's still a different record. While Kid A had a quiet and bleak tone, Amnesiac has a more frantic and ambient sound. Like Aphex Twin but with lyrics and more frantic. This album gets as much play as the other albums from me, so I can't complain. On a side note, Radiohead fans are such pains. They hate this and Kid A (both are great records) because the tone has changed completely from Ok Computer, but they also hate Hail To The Theif because it sounds too much like an "Ok Computer re-hash". Make up your minds, Radiohead fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Find Your Vein
I don't know if heroin is a prereq for this album, but I don't do it so I listened without. If they are trying to capture what is like to be finding a vein by an old railroad track near dilapidated factory in Liverpool, and rolling around in your own vomit, than I think they succeeded. They still rock though.

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay, they lost me here
Radiohead delivers amnesiac as a follow-up to the much anticipated yet somewhat misunderstood Kid A. From here, it should become clear that leftovers are leftovers for a reason. In Ryan Adam's recent three albums of 2005, his plan was to release all music from one session and make not one album but three. The result. Fillers. Radiohead, however, made a remarkably experimental album in Kid A, and while by no means their best, remains severely underrated. Anesiac is almost the opposite. It was created from unreleased sessions from Kid A, and while a few songs such as "I Might Be Wrong," "Pact," and "Hunting Bears" remain true to form, most of these should have remained sessions. Sorry guys, bravo to the max for absolutely everything prior, but I can't really get into this one. I hated Kid A at first, kept retrying until I loved it, but I'm afraid that its just not working with this one. I'll give it an extra star for its three decent songs and for it being made by radiohead.

It seems an easy task to put together a CD for a series about a funeral home...pick some songs about death and make people smirk on topic for a moment before they toss it into the soundtrack graveyard. But this is not a disc to be tossed away. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than Vol. 1
Volume 2 of the Soundtrack for "Six Feet Under" simply blows Volume 1 out by going a step beyond what its predecessor did. Incorporating a balanced combination of the best of the indie world at the time of its release (Death Cab for Cutie, The Arcade Fire, Interpol, etc.) with a handful of recent classics (Radiohead's "Lucky" and Coldplay's "Rush of Blood to the Head") and an opening track by Nina Simone from 1965, the album brings great memories from an even greater TV show that we will miss sorely.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Soundtrack
Nice CD. I always liked the effort the producers upt into choosing music for the show, as music helps immensely in creating emotions. All of the other reviewers' comments were right on the money with regards to this album, and I am happy I own both volumes of this soundtrack (Wish each season would have released a collection, but I guess that hardline aficionados can piece together their own favorites...) Sorry to see the show end, but alas, Everything Does.

3-0 out of 5 stars i wish it weren't the end
lots of songs are good in this soundtrack. i wish there could be another one following this one. because it's been better then the first soundtrack. all the music in this one is so pure and eager to tell people how good it is to be alive. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting to say the least...
Having bought(and loved)Final Straw, I decided to give When It's... a chance. Although this album is not as indie downbeat as Final Straw it's still an excellent album. There are some genuinely excellent songs on this like Making Enemies, Chased By I dont know what and One Night Is Not Enough, while simple but geniusly done songs like Black and Blue, Make Love To Me Forever and the title song work well. So, overall, a good but not great album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delusional Much??
How anyone on this fine planet of ours could consider this album anything but extraordinary simply baffles me! Gary and the boys have seriously come through with the goods on this album!
1-0 out of 5 stars Not good, not good, Danny
Simply put, Final Straw is great and this is not. It's rough and lacks depth. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Interpol create literate, atmospheric, moody, trashy post-punk music that recalls '80s faves the Psychedelic Furs. And this is definitely a good thing. While most young bands are content to rhyme "make it" with "fake it," Interpol pens melodramatic tales of tortured and tortuous urban relationships that are truly refreshing. Like their peers the Strokes, they're bright, sophisticated, and meticulous enough to build stirring soundscapes. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album; never get tired of listening to it.
I bought this after hearing "Stella" on XM radio.I've had this for over 2 years and the songs never get old. It's a timeless sound and I always enjoy pulling it out and playing it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I will say this album is very good, but I like Antics better because of several "problems" with this album.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
The album begins with an amazing ethereal sounding song titled, "untitled."That song is very addicting to listen to.
