4-0 out of 5 stars A pleasing mix of many smooth alt rock sounds
for fans of the following albums:
4-0 out of 5 stars When Two Pop-Filled Trucks Colllide
There'sa recent commercial where a family is sitting around a table eating Cheez-Its.Why they are eating Cheez-Its at the dinner table is anybody's guess. The father wonders aloud, staring in awe at a cracker, how they make them. The son describes two semi-trailers barrelling towards each other, one with a huge hunk of cheese strapped to the front grill and the other with a large saltine strapped to front. Thus, the inevitable head-on collision results in the formation of the aforementioned Cheez-It.This, I imagine, is similar to the formation of "The Trials of Van Occupanther" by Midlake, one of the best albums to come out this year. The tastes being smashed together here, as mentioned any many, many reviews of this really interesting album, are that of Fleetwood Mac, Pablo Cruise, Dave Mason, Bread, Atlantic Rhythm Section, and early squirrely Neil Young all strapped to the front of a speeding Mac Truck heading directly for Thom Yorke'stour bus.And what you're left with is an amazingly produced slab of easy-listening rock and roll that sounds as if its found it's way through some vortex of time, circa 1976.The songs are complex enough to remain interesting over repeated listens and, while not shower-worthy hook-wise, the melodies, coupled with some fantastic vocal harmony and tasteful instrumenatal touches, are quite irresistible.2006 seems to be a rather bland year for good indy rock albums, but Midlake's sophmore effort is definitely vying for a few "Best of..." lists come December. They're certainly on mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! Real music!
A friend of mine told me to get this album, saying "the more you listen to it, the more addicted you will be to it." Well, she was right.

Warning: Even limited exposure to this French band's music is liable to turn the listener into a crazed zealot desperate to "just turn people on" to their music or to wander about aimlessly wondering aloud why they're not at least as well known as, say, Erlend Oye. The band's been relentlessly eclectic since they formed in the late '90s; they make hybrid music, an electronic-flavored rock that's impossible to describe without using up half a dozen hyphens in the process. It's their most straight-ahead, "rock"-sounding release, and if your first thought is that it wouldn't hurt if Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than the sum of their parts
Having followed Phoenix's discography along with Air, Tahiti 80, Zoot Woman, and a long list of other French bands that I found from links that traced back to Daft Punk, I suddenly find them in a class higher above -- and all their own -- compared to many of their ilk.
5-0 out of 5 stars THe more I listen to it, the better it gets
I was blown away by these guys in concert. They carried their earlier, more poppy stuff well, but their new stuff really rocked!THis album is full of great tunes that allude a bit to the early 80s punk movement, but also throw a couple unique styles out there. The use of repetition is the most blatant thing on the album that I haven't heard anywhere else.It kinda throws you off at first, but then, you learn to love it- great stuff!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great record; never rests, never falters.
I'm more and more impressed by Phoenix the longer I listen to them. This record has a beautiful sense of the power of repetition in a pop song. The subtle sonic and lyric shifts allow the songs to flex and bob about themselves, creating songs that more akin to woven compositions than just verse/corus/verse.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album demands to be listened to over and over
Blue October's songs are the most honest expression of emotions I've heard in a pop/rock band. This cd covers every range of emotion from rage to helpless love. Although it's clear that the singer/songwriter is a lot more depressed than most people, he expresses it in a way that nearly all people can connect with. His lyrics are poetic and earnest, his voice is intense and melodic. And what rock band has a violin?
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent October
Blue October is one of those bands that captures you and doesn't let go. History for Sale is an album that captures all sides of this complex band - angst, happiness, relief, desperation - all with a blend of driving guitars, catchy hooks, and the dynamic vocals of Justin Furstenfeld.
1-0 out of 5 stars Another reason so many kids are mean and depressed!
What dribble. Why isn't there a half star or better yet a negative number?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Catchy!
People, honestly, who cares if Franz Ferdinand is today's best band or if this album is "funky" or not. This album is just good ol' fun music that's not at all watered down or lackluster. Just listen to this album and dance to it. Not every critical acclaimed album has to be a masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal debut album!

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Masterpiece Of Innovation.
Now the time has come...for something brand new in the field of rock music. These two geniuses have created a new form of music that some obscure circles are calling "post-punk".Whatever it is, it's something that has never been atempted before.Never has there been a rock vocalist in the history of music who has this type of voice and delivery. It is truly fresh and exiting to witness the birth of a new movement in modern rock. Also, I understand that this is Justin Warfield's first musical creation that he has ever done.Wow!For a relative novice to single-handedly reinvent music is pretty impressive.Even the artwork is incredible...the girl on the cover is very attractive, and the fact that she wields a knife is certainly threatening.Overall, a genuine masterpiece of this brand new genre known as "post-punk".Highly Recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars News Bulletin: Most Music Is "Recycled"
And the same applies for movies, I mean how many bad remakes will Hollywood continue to squeeze out? That said, some are good. And the same could be said about She Wants Revenge. The album is well produced and a nice change of pace from the typical stuff we're subjected to today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Darkly Entertaining
Reviewing is such an inexact affair. At best it's like saying to someone, "If you liked this then you'll probably like that."At worst it's like saying, "I liked it, and if you have any sense you will, too."Is that not how it is?

2-0 out of 5 stars just ok
I really loved Papercut Chronicles. The lyrics were deep, the instrumentals with the live band made the songs incredible. The cd was just really private and real... after listening to it you really felt like you had an idea about who the emcee was.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much Better!
I didn't really think much of the earlier Gym Class Heroes albums, mostly because they were too simple. The beats were bland and repetitive. Even with well written lyrics they just lacked luster. This time around I hear a complete revolution in their sound. It's not like the style changed much, they just gave you more on your plate when they served you. It seems they spent more time focusing on what could be done with their music once it had been established and it pays off big. Highlights: "The Queen And I,""Clothes Off," and "Scandalous Scholastics."

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
This album is a nice surprise from GCH after the success of The Papercut Chronicles. While more poppy than Chronicles was, School Children still delivers compelling lyrics and supreme production. With almost haunting melodies in "It's OK, But Just This Once" against the addictive bass lines and choruses in "Shoot Down the Stars" and "7 Weeks", School Children delivers what GCH fans are expecting--great production backing focused and sometimes even moving vocals by Travis McCoy. ... Editorial Review

Chronicling The Replacements' gloriously tempestuous decade on a single disc ostensibly seems akin to reading Cliff's Notes for the New Testament: No sooner do you grow fond of the protagonist than they've nailed him up. And if that comparison sounds a tad sacrilegious, perhaps you underestimate the Mats' hallowed place in modern rock history--and the hearts of their ardent fans. Yet somehow even this condensed format focuses the songs of Paul Westerberg and playing of bandmates Bob and Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars into a dramatic arc that can't be denied. The initial tracks of this 20-track collection display a band joyously besotted by nascent punk thrash, yet one not so different from the scores of similar bands tearing up local clubs in the '80s. 4-0 out of 5 stars Unreplaceable?
Ahh the Replacements. That band you've heard about for so many years but have no idea what they sing. Well as intended, here's the new first choice for the casual fan. This is better than their past collection because it draws from more than just 4 albums, sounds great, and is 20 tracks. The last 2 are "new" songs by the way, both decent. The first half of this disc is awesome. Song after song of primo 80's alternative. The later songs I still dig too, so they're a bit more polished and pop. "Alex Chilton" and "Can't Hardly Wait" might be the biggest hits here, but "Bastards Of The Young", "Achin' To Be", and "Merry Go Round" are great as well. I actually wish "Talent Show" was here too, but that's just me. Anyway, new fans or old, don't fuss over what's missing, just love what's here. I'd say this would go well with Paul's "Besterberg" disc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the (anti) legend
Normally when you browse amazon for replacements or westerberg/stinson related material, all of the "customers who bought this item also bought" entries are similar replacements/westerberg/stinson/etc. albums.Look at the list now... not another Minneapolis rocker to be found at all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite everything, but pretty close
Listening to this album brought me back to my teenage years growing up in the burbs, but made it seem like I actually had fun.Starting with the early punkier stuff to go with my early adolesent rage and wanting to get drunk to the later more mature songs of heartbrake and relationships, and wanting to get drunk. It's a good trip down blurry memory lane. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable album anyway
I know this album is criticized almost everywhere, but I like it, probably because I am a weirdo. lol After a few spins, I'd say I enjoy it even more than their first album Up All Night. The band have changed their sound a bit. Isn't experiencing new things good for any band? The sound won't remind you of anything about the Strokes and the Libertines like the first album does. This is an album relying on lively performance rather than production tricks. Johnny Borrell's singing seems to be the focus. He sounds more uplifting and confident this time - the ghosts of Bowie and Jarvis Cocker no longer exist (check out the vocals of Vice and Up All Night on the first album and you will know what I mean).
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
I have never been one to label an album a classic unless I felt every song could stand on its own as a quality song.I've probably listened to this cd about thirty times already and I must say, it is pristine top to bottom.Every song on this cd is amazing! No, it may not be as raw or risky as their first cd Up All Night, but the music is as good if not better. The replay value of this album is unlimited.I highly recommend this cd!This is how rock n' roll is supposed to be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Composers Since Schumann
The chains of pandeatonic clusters in "Before I Fall to Pieces" and the Aeolian cadence of "Los Angeles Waltz" place this album in the company of such great works as Gustav Mahler's Song of the Earth.

Imagine a loose consortium of musicians who combine the lilting melodies of the Zombies with the driving hooks of the Kinks. 5-0 out of 5 stars New Pornographer step up!
I've had nearly 6 months with this record now and am convinced that it is the New Pornographer's masterpiece, though I believe (and hope) that the best is still yet to come.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable
Well Amazon kept recommending me to this album so I decided to try it out.Im not sure if this is actually indie but I generally do not like much music in that genre. I dont think many indie bands have good vocalists but it is easy to see that that The New Pornographers have beautiful harmonizing vocals.Overall this is easy to listen to, and is just good indie pop. They seem to have some kind of chemistry in the band to create such simple enjoyable music. There are not too many memorable songs, except maybe Sing Me Spanish Techno, but overall it is very pleasing to the ears.
2-0 out of 5 stars Twin-not to catchy but avant garde enough- Cinema
Whats the big deal? Neko Case is a great musician in her own right. In fact, her songs were the only ones on the alblum I actually enjoyed. Bones of an Idol is a great song, but I really dont see the appeal of this faceless band. If its rock, then its not very good. I would give them the benefit of the doubt that they are so artsy that theyve come full cirle back to plain, old dirty rock. ... Read more

Ulrich Schnauss is a German electronic artist who is influenced by forebears like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk--but unlike retro-space artists, he doesn't sound like he just emerged from their dusty studios after being marooned there for 30 years. Instead, his synthesizers bristle with contemporary electro-rhythms, a bit of New Wave romanticism, and melodies you want to last forever. Schnauss has perfected a balance between quiet yearning and joyful heroism in his music, with sweeping major-chord progressions that are triumphal without being ostentatious, expansive without being pompous. For someone who is so rhythm-centered with crackling snares and electro-glitches, it's ultimately the melodies that draw you in, turned on glistening, bell-like timbres and space-organ sustains. This is ambient for grown ups! Like the soundtrack to a Michael Mann movie without the violence, sort of....The perfect album for one of those days off that you occasionally get, but that you haven't really planned (yes, I know, they are rare, but they do exist) Just ripp this straight into your iPod and don't do anything useful for about 85 minutes! If you like this, you should check out www.ulrich-schnauss.com forhis free MP3s of demos/early versions! His album "A strangely isolated place" is just as good. If ambient with an urban rhythmic twist is your cup of tea, I also recommend the OSA to the movie "Code 46" by Free Association, it's quite magical! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing listen
I bought this album at the same time I bought Yoshimi by the Flaming Lips at a time when I was becoming very discouraged by modern bands and modern music in general. Jaded by those bands that sounded great upon first listen but lose their appeal after only a few spins (The Strokes being the most obvious), I decided to take a chance on these two albums I heard about from Paste Magazine (a great music mag!) and was absolutely blown away. Yoshimi was the favorite, right off the bat, but Z by MMJ just stayed with me. I would plug it in every week, listen, and hear something amazing I didn't hear before. Some new guitar solo, or subtle drum break. And so I started listening twice a week and now I listen to MMJ (not just Z, but other albums as well) at least once a day! Their music is something that has affected me on a deeper level, something that has not happened for almost 16 years (since Primal Scream's Screamadelica in 1991). Start here, then do yourself a favor and delve deeper into their back catalog and buy them all. Including their early version compilation albums which are worth the price due to the inclusion of their cover version of EJ's "Rocket Man", among others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album, it's one of their best!
I love this album and still listen to it frequently, MMJ is a great band because their music is always changing and every new album from them is like opening a new gift for Christmas.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Album of 2005!

I first heard Kill Hannah on a tour with Clear Static and Shiny Toy Guns earlier this year. I was hooked with the first set I heard from them. (I went on to hear them twice more in the next 3 days.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this cd.
If you are unfamilar with Kill Hannah, then buy either of their albums available here on amazon.
3-0 out of 5 stars Glam rock that shifts gears often enough to cause engine damage.
As elegant as it is over the top, as sophisticated as it is bombastic, Chicago based Kill Hannah's second major label offering balances between excess and subtlety while never letting one outweigh the other. High energy glam rock anthems like 'Love You to Death' and album's first single 'Lips Like Morphine' hold nothing back while slower and decidedly mellower selections like 'Black Poison Blood' and 'The Collapse' recall the pleasant, drawn out melodies of Smashing Pumpkins' later days. While this balance of polarized song styles makes for a varied and enjoyable record, sometimes the group delves a bit too far into each side. Some tracks go beyond being subtle, becoming dull and tedious ('Statues Without Eyes') while others are almost too over the top to be taken seriously (see the 80's synth pop excess of 'Crazy Angel'). Overall, Until There's Nothing Left of Us is a solid and enjoyable effort and the album's excellent last three songs more than compensate for its few steps in the wrong direction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lonesome Fuel
I first discovered Matthew Ward on `The Transfiguration of Vincent' (2003), which became one of my favourite albums of that year. I've waited eagerly for the follow-up which has finally arrived in the form of `Transistor Radio: Memories Of A Utopian Radio Power'
5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best albums of all time
i came across M. ward unexpectedly at a white stripes concert, where he was the opening act.He completely blew me away, so i went out and bought this album. This album is haunting and poignant, while being beautiful and, for lack of another good adjective, kind of weird.M. Ward has a rough voice but it complemetns his guitar playing excellently.Songs such as "I'll be Yr Bird", "Fuel For Fire" and "Here COmes the Sun Again" are all amazing songs, though i personally like "4 hours in Washington", a creepy song about insomnia, and "Big Boat", and though i have no clue what its about, its funny/clever.Most of this album is M. Ward playing acoustic guitar and singing, but onsome of the songs he has piano, drums, and bass.I dont really know how to describe this album, but to say it sounds like some amazing blast from the far past.and that sounded cheesy, but you must buy this album. now. Buy It.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless.
Transistor Radio is easily one of the best albums I've heard in the past few years. It was my first exposure to Matt Ward, and I have since purchased his two previous albums. The songs have an old-timey feel and mainly features just Ward's voice, guitar, some piano, and light percussion. The songs are simple and the lyrics are great. "Lullaby + Exile" is one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard. "Big Boat" is catchy and tough not to sing along to. Songs like "Hi-Fi," "One Life Away," "Paul's Song," and "Fuel for Fire" are incredible. Really, every song is as good as the last. The instrumentals (there are 3) are good, but not highlights for me. Other than that, this is one of the most pleasing albums I have ever heard. M. Ward's raspy voice isn't too far off from Louis Armstrong, and his gentle guitar playing is soothing. If you like great song writing and folky pop, you'll love this. I even turned my parents on to M. Ward. I can't recommend this more highly, and it's a crime that Matt's music is not more well-known. ... Read more

Neko Case's third solo effort is a moody, atmospheric affair that both satisfies and mystifies. Recorded in Tucson with a stellar band that includes Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So Original
This is quintessential Neko Case. This cd says it all. The singing is so sensual. The songs have a deep sense of longing burried deep within. The whole cd really is over the top. "I Wish I Was the Moon" is deffinately a must have. This cd either stays at the top of my case or in my player at all times. What more can I say except if you don't buy this album you aren't truly living.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Could Blacklist This Backlist?
Although I've read her work typified as "alt-country," a better way to describe Neko Case on BLACKLISTED is "country noir." Her beautiful voice drifts over rootsy, poignant, and even desolate arrangements with a haunting quality. And those lyrics... she is just a very talented woman.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'll crash my boat happily on the rocks for her siren song
To limit Neko Case to the category of country or alt-country would, I think, miss the point. Her work with New Pornographers should indicate that her musical interests and influences are more wide-ranging and, consequently, deserving of broader attention.Which is not to diminish the quality of the country-inflections of this album, for they are country in mood and timbre, not in artifice or image. The result is one of authenticity--personal authenticity, that is, not an "authentic" recasting of something someone else has done before.

An introductory drum roll drops out and is replaced by a single suspended electric guitar, which is then paralleled by a snare, filled in with the bass, and--crash!--"Cherub Rock," the opening track, is enveloped in an explosion of metal guitar. So the journey begins. This album is pre-experimentation vintage Pumpkins. Produced by Butch Vig (Garbage, Sonic Youth, Nirvana's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, withstood time so far
For me a classic is an album you can listen to 10 years later and still be interested and challenged by it.Siamese Dream passes that test for me.It's a rollicking rock album with such a distinctive Pumpkins sound.I appreciate Billy Corgan's artistic integrity and demand to change and grow their sound, but, IMHO, it never got better than this album.Mellon Collie was excellent as well, but this is the epitome of the pumpkins' sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT FROM START TO FINISH
I don't think this album could have been any better. Heavy distortion, crazy high-pitched solos, and loud pounding drums all come together perfectly for 13 amazing songs. There is not one song on this cd that I can skip over, it's just incredible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Is it a dream?
It is a dream? It almost seems like it is.How can a rock album be this good?

Editorial Review

We always suspected they had it in them, but who knew Yo La Tengo would finally craft a record as wholeheartedly terrific as this? Fourteen years into their career as indie rock's low-key mainstays, the Hoboken, New Jersey, trio have arrived--and it's about time. It's as though simply by sticking around long enough and doing the same thing over and over while constantly refining and focusing Yo La have evolved from scattered, record-collecting eccentrics into the true classicists of '90s indie rock. Blending elements of what has illuminated Sonic Youth, Stereolab, Pavement, and My Bloody Valentine, they've long had a clear voice but never sounded so comfortable using it. Willfully eclectic husband-and-wife multi-instrumentalists Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley--with third member James McNew never sounding more permanent--have previously tended to alternate between their instincts to be a pop rock band and to serve as artsy noisemakers. 5-0 out of 5 stars masterwork?
this album is exceptional for YLT.I often flounder between this one and 'and then nothing' being my favorites, but they are different.the variety of the songs is great but they all work together as a cohesive album, skipping tracks on this CD is completely unneccessary.there are still some great love songs and a post-punk tunes but this album is more lyrically and instrumentally mature then some of thier earlier works, such as 'Painful' or 'Electropura'.I honestly couldnt say enough about this cd, but i dont like writing long reviews... this is a personal favorite of mine

5-0 out of 5 stars Ranks among those obligatory 90s hipster discs
There is a certain amount of unanimity amongst critics as to what discs from the 1990s should be heralded as great, and "Heart" is generally granted propitious accolades. My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" is traditionally regarded as a superior recording, and for the most part it is. "Loveless" is an incomparable example of committed artistry, and it should garner adulations by its sheer density alone. However, I've always felt that "Heart", which for the most part exists in "Loveless"' vein of ethereal ambience, was the more immediately human and inviting record. "Heart"'s emotion exists on a unique artistic plane that few artists dare to tread, and the record's often convoluted lyrical musings are viscerally penetrating, more so than most modern pop records. Upon first blush, the band seems to rely on a relatively limited musical vocabulary throughout the album, but extended listens reveal a fairly rich tapestry of styles, sounds and impressive articulations. "Spec Bebop" is consistenly unnerving, but in at least one sense it seems like one of the most integral and necessary tracks on the record. YLT's Jesus and Mary Chain fetishism had to be illuminated at some point on "Heart", and "Spec Bebops" unrestrained entropy is a great testament to the band's willingness to explore the ether. Conversely, the apparent convention of "Little Honda", "Sugarcube" and "Deeper Into Movies" display another facet of YLT's artistic maturity, as well as the band's penchant for sheer histrionic onslaught. The solo midway through "Sugarcube" is the one of most vexing and hilariously apropos moments on any modern rock song, and it becomes apparnet that the band approaches such passages with an equal concern for irony and viability. "Autumn Sweater", perhaps due to its name alone, has become synonymous with stifled hipster love balladry, and by most accounts it stands as one of the most honest and telling rock narratives of the last fifteen years. YLT's ability to oscillate between Beach Boys sentimentality, Can experimentation and Sonic Youth flamboyance, all the while harboring a kind of self-assured ambivalence, is a sometimes startling testament to the band's musical prowess.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get in the right mood.....
The first time I listened to this disc - it felt like nails going straight into my eardrums. We were on a road trip - not the right 'vibe' for the cd.Since I've listened to it quite a few times - and in the correct mood - feels like a really good rest!!!!! ... Read more
