5-0 out of 5 stars One of My All-Time Favorite Albums
I'm sorry, but "Voices" is an amazing cd and is sooo much better and more mature than anything Matchbook Romance has ever done before. I first got it as a birthday present in early April and to this day, I still find myself going back to it even when i spent the first few months in an obsessive trance with this cd. There's just something about it that keeps me engaged and makes me feel like part of the music.
3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Is More Accurate; Musical Evolution > Musical Creationism
Let's take a quick look at what 2006 has done for the world of rock music. We've got hot shots like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hawthorne Heights, and From First to Last trying to redefine their sound as well as continue to let their respective fanbases grow - and for the most part, these trials have been successful. Out of all of the rock bands in 2006 to try and change their sound, though, the most significant change would be Matchbook Romance's. Stories and Alibis was a huge hit for the scene kids with your typical whiny break up-themed tracks like "Promise" and "My Eyes Burn."
2-0 out of 5 stars Hm...
I was dissapointed.I heard a sample part of one these songs, I liked their sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Religion is known as a very influential punk band, and Suffer's the reason why
Bad Religion is known for being one of, if not the, most influential punk band(s) of the 90s punk revival. And this album is pretty much the reason why.
5-0 out of 5 stars The startling sole instance in which an albums repetition does not annoy me
I am no fan of repetition. Those radio stations which play the same song every other hour, (which is to say all of them,) annoy the living hell out of me. I insist on maintaining an expansive personal collection of music and rotating that collection in such a way that I'll go through at least ten cd's before returning to a favorite. That being said, let me say that "Suffer" is the one album that, when my car's cd player automatically cycles the disk back to track 1, I won't eject from the console with irritation. This album is so catchy, so fun to try to sing a long with, and yet so amazingly deep and profound, that I've been known to let it hang out in the car for days. If your new to the band, (who's entire body of work can be said to have only produced a child's handful of substandard songs,) then begin at the beginning, with this one. If you've enjoyed at all any of their other offerings, then there is noconceivable way for you to be disappointed upon the purchase of "suffer." Probably my favorite punk record of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best albums of all time
this one is definately my favorite Bad Religion album.every song is listenable pretty much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the Greatest
To begin, Emery is one of the best rock/screamo/alternative bands ever, and if I could I would give this and their last album both a 6/5. They take screamo to a completely different level. I won't ramble here I'll just give out the pros and cons.
5-0 out of 5 stars "You wanted to know if it was worth the pain that it's caused us."
Emery has changed their sound slightly, and although it's a bit at the cost of their originality, I think their music is better for it.As a whole, they've gotten a little poppier (without forsaking their hardcore influences) and a little catchier, and it makes their music more entertaining.I still think The Weak's End was good, but the more mainstream The Question is better.Emery has maintained enough of their originality to stand out while making their music more accessible to draw in more fans.
5-0 out of 5 stars good stuff
this is the first emery cd i heard, and it got me into them right away. the lyrics and singing are beautiful, and the screaming is nice. but then i got the weaks end and its even better, tho its their old cd. the lyrics arent as good tho and this is still a must buy cd ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Saw these guys on SNL, and they played the "New York is for people..." song
I never really got into punk. Most punk bands spent whatever musical knowledge they had very quickly, and either ended up in obscurity or metamorphising into something more intelligent and mature (like The Clash). But I remember these guys on SNL in 1980, and they were hilariously bad.But I loved watching them. They did their mosh pit thing, played crap music, and were never really heard from again.I heard they got banned from the show afterwards (which really isn't such a bad thing, considering how awful SNL is)....
4-0 out of 5 stars Let's Really Have A War!!!!
These guys were definitely PUNK with a capital P! With a volatile mix of killer musicianship and Lee Ving's Angry Cookie-Monster rant style of singing, FEAR left no target unscathed and did so with so much vitriolic glee and abandon!
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant
I can't think of any other scene in the world that put out such consistently great records as the U.S. hardcore scene of the early 1980's (nor have many other scenes gone down hill so quickly.)Fear's "The Record" is just one of those fine pieces. It is punishing. It takes no prisoners. It offends most people, animals, and clergymen in one way or another. And that's what's so great about it.In an age when most punk consisted of anti-government, anti-social harrangues, which actually worked by the way, these guys had a truly warped sense of humor.Soundwise, think of a heavier, more offensive version of the Circle Jerks, who can actually play their instruments. Thats right, these guys aren't content to just play around with 3 chords, they can play.So in short, they had talent, intelligence, and awicked sense of humor. If you can't handle it, you should go and have a heart attack. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars raw, crusty, lightning speed!
Now this album is something else. I was laughing because of the one review I saw saying you must have some insane reason to like the germs. This is actually pretty true, you sort of need a different appreciation of music for this collection. It certainly is raw stuff, they don't spare on sounding like they know exactly what they are doing. a lot of songs though really come together like lexicon devil, media blitz, communist eyes etc. then there are songs like "shut down" which is some 8 minutes of mess. vocals range from pretty crusty to completely raspy to inaudible. Caught in my eye has a chorus saying "I got you caught in my eye" and he sounds kind of like an old man coughing up a hairball or a loogee when singing the word 'eye'. so this probably isn't making the CD too appetizing to you but it really is good stuff. straight up late 70's crusty punk. fast drums, muffled rockin guitars, crusty raspy like fast paced vocals. the germs got it all!

2-0 out of 5 stars Part of history but the music is very ... BAD
The music on this anthology disk is very bad.
5-0 out of 5 stars silly silly people.
if your idea of "the greatest band in the world" involves NOFX, then you should definitely NOT buy this album. This is for old punk fans or for people who want to get into punk and discover one of the greatest bands of all time. Dont ever compare the germs to NOFX. thats just stupid. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible, but the sound engineer needs to be given a hearing test.
It really is a fantastic album, song wise, but what is up with the sound? It's tragic that an album as good as this one should succumb to something like poor sound. It's not even an issue of lacking polish...it's all mids, sort of like an MP3 ripped at 32kbps. The drums are so muddy sounding that at times they sound like they're being played in a room far away from the rest of the music. It does vary slightly from song to song, but overall, it's not good. I have to agree with the other reviewer who stated that Samiam are best with a nice clean sound. Listen to Clumsy, then put this in.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good album, but not very good production
Of all the Samiam albums, this one reminds me most of Soar. In fact, if this album came out after Soar I believe it would have been generally considered outstanding. However, the main reason it doesn't get five stars from me is because it does seem like such an enormous step backwards in production quality. In some ways it's nostalgic, and I half wonder if it was produced this way intentionally. This album could easily be confused to be an older album from the band from the Soar era.
4-0 out of 5 stars Keep listening
Great album, I cant take it out of my cd player. It's been a week since it's release and it is all I have been listening to. Don't let the raw productions and the way the singer sings on this album lead you astray. I was kinda bummed about it at first too and thought that it sucked. But after I listened to it for a couple days I was hooked. The lyrics are awesome and the songs are well written. After a while they have the old samiam feel and you will find them stuck in your head. I can honestly listen to every song on the album up to Lulliby and then I usually skip that one cause it gets kinda boring, but that is the only song I think that is not that good. I just wish the drums sounded a little better. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The Real Epitaph
It somehow just makes sense that thirty years later you'd see a cd version of the same type of lame "new wave" cash-in albums that cropped up like mushrooms in '77-'78.The predictable and the loss leaders are all here, in a way that really makes me oddly nostalgic

3-0 out of 5 stars Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Boxset
Everyone can gripe about what they left out but I am more concerned about what was included. You get the obvious (Blitzkrieg Bop, Search and Destroy, White Riot, Blank Generation), a few real gems (Patti Smith's deconstruction of Hey Joe)and some real duds (The Strangler's "Peaches", Ian Dury "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll") to stuff that isn't even punk (Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello). Though its cool not to always pick obvious songs by an artist it seems that perhaps some of the choices were because they couldn't get the rights to better known songs. I mean whoever heard of The Soft Boys "I Want to Be an Anglepoise Lamp". I would have picked "I Want to Destroy You".Or Ultravox "Saturday Night in the City of the Dead". It was from the first album before they even developed their sound. So yes this is a history of punk but with pub rock and deservedly lesser known pop punk bands. Whoever thought that punk would some day be watered down into parent-friendly pop punk/emo that would crowd out the bands with real talent. So if you know about punk then the boxset may not really give you any more ideas but if you can't wait to catch the Warped Tour every year then "No Thanks" might save you from a life of desperation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect, I love it
It could have had some more artists on it. Many of the ones that are already there have 2-3 songs. But that's hardly anything to complain about, this is a great set! The book it comes with is also very informative, and has great photos of just about every band here. It even gives a brief explanation of why the Pistols aren't here, but you'd probably be better off just purchasing "Never Mind the Bollocks" if you care that much. Personally, I don't care that they're not included.

Editorial Review

The real reason for the Misfits' prolonged life-after-death is that underneath the three-chord bluster, campy imagery, and pancake makeup there are some great, catchy, pop-hook-driven tunes. Not to mention that no one can sing "whoaah-whoaaah-whoooooaaah!" like the Elvis-impersonating, golden-throated superboy Danzig. But even the most die-hard Misfits freak must surely tire of listening to version after version--7-inch take, live recording, previously unreleased demo--of two-minute punk songs like "We Are 138," "Rat Fink," "Halloween," and "Braineaters" off the bazillion bootlegs and dozen-plus authorized releases from this short-lived act.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enter Collection II
While not as good as Collection I, Collection II is deffidently a good buy. This collection, just like Collection I, contains songs that aren't avaliable on the studio albums, such as, Cough/Cool, Children In Heat, Rat Fink, Halloween II, Horror Hotel, and Mephisto Waltz(which was an unused Samhain song that somehow ended up on this collection). This album also contains alternate versions of Hatebreeders and Braineaters. I find these versions to be better than the originals on Walk Among Us.
4-0 out of 5 stars a great work but...
i own this album, collection 1, walk among us and static age.the production on collection 1 is horrible compared to the rest but in my opinion collection 1 has the best songs, just poor quality.danzig has an awesome voice but he doesnt sing to please everyone...he sings cuz he likes to rock out.as a misfits junkie i would recommend collection 1 first then pick up the rest (static age and walk among us).where eagles dare is still my all time fav misfits song.its vulgar but how can you not like it?

3-0 out of 5 stars Not necessary
I was a big Misfits- fan about a half year ago. I bought 3 of their albums, Collection 1, Legacy Of Brutality and this one. Now the problem that I have, is that there really isn`t an essential Misfits collection (Box Set maybe, but not everyone needs THAT much Misfits). I prefer this one, because Collection 1 has poor versions of great songs, and Legacy Of Brutality sounds muddy as hell. I am actually still kicking myself for the mistake of buying so many Misfits CD`s, because Static Age has almost every great song in it. Walk Among Us would be a good album too.

AFI-Very Proud Of Ya *****
5-0 out of 5 stars The Good Old Days
If you started listening to AFI when this cd was released then you know they changed the sound big time. For me that is when I said "I 'll just stick to the first two cds". I'm really not in to thier whole new "hardcore" style they have now. I just saw the video on MTV for the latest single and boy what a laugh. I guess it happens to a lot of bands. But it sucks when they change from a band you like to hear, to band that hurts your ears. I still remember seeing them open up for Guttermouth in 1996 and then hearing this cd played in the record store, buying it like a week after it came out and having many bedroom concerts..hahaha Those were The Good Old Days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, if a bit generic
Much like "Answer That and Stay Fashionable" (which was releasedbefore "Very Proud of Ya" on a different label before being rereleased by Nitro after the latter was released) this is AFI in their punk phase, before the harder and darker influences began to take over. This release is slightly darker than their previous release in that their are no real novelty songs and most of its tunes tend to have a "dark" focus, but its still basically three quickly played chords backing up Davey's whiney voice. I group this one with their first record because its basically the same sound, if a little more developed.

Editorial Review

With a handful of indie releases and a few hectic years of touring under their belts, this release marks the Ataris big-label bow. And if the concept uniting it is an ode to the power of memory--a conceit attributed to Richard Hell, but one that ironically might as well have originated with the likes of Billy Joel--Kris Roe and company blitz their way through it with kinetic power and hooks to spare. But therein lies the rub: Fans will find this an album rife with positive energy, bright, well-constructed songs, and upbeat deliveries (if sometimes in service of awkward intellectual pretensions like "Unopened Letter to the World"'s parallels between Kurt Cobain and no less than Emily Dickinson); cynics may hear at as further evidence that punk and alternative rock have been co-opted in service of formulas as well-honed--and rigid--as anything the dreaded Corp Rock '80s ever yielded. Still, if play-it-to-the-back-rows, unabashed power-pop is what the Ataris were after here, they've delivered it with nigh perfection, right down to a slick, pumped up cover of Don Henley's classic-rock warhorse "The Boys of Summer." 3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all...
Sure, not every song is worth listening to, but I have major respect for this band. They're classed with other pop-punk bands who I have no respect for at all, but The Ataris are somewhat different. The band is levels beyond other bands in their genre. I can't quite put my finger on it though. I'm not sure if it's the sound, the lyrics, the vocals, or something else. However, I do know that they deserve a listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lesson in Punk....
The aptly titled, The Shape of Punk to Come is a amazing cd. Its fast, furious, creative, and a true lesson in what makes punk music good. This album really was ahead of its time, and years later it's still incredibly addictive. I didn't hear this album untill last year, but even now it still sounds fresh and as good as it was back then.
5-0 out of 5 stars re discovered gem
I bought this album when it came out and listened to it pretty frequently. I kind of grew out of the whole punk/hardcore phase when I graduated high school.I was looking through old cds I had not listened to in awhile and popped this in.I appreciate this album more now than when it came out cause it is still better than anything punk or hardcore coming now. I would say this is one of the best political punk albums ever.People who listen to it now think it doesn't sound to different from bands now, but this came out in 1998, way before all the garbage out now.If youre looking for a pissed off, political punk album from guys who actually knew how to play there instruments this a great album to pick up.And no this isn't screamo. Not even close. If you want a real screamo album go pick up something by saetia, the assistant, orchid or early circle takes the square, if you can find that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five years ahead of its time!!
This CD is absolutely amazing!A mixture of genres including old-school punk, screamo and hard rock.So many alternative bands nowadays release tracks that are noticably tainted by commercial pop, but these guys have a sound that is pure and original. If Refused released this CD next week it would easily compete with today's alternative music, even though it was released in 1998!

The seminal Phoenix trio's self-titled debut is one of the greatest hard-core punk records ever made--but it pissed the punk kids off. Whether it was the Meat Puppets' long hair (in '81!) or their set-opener "The King and I" it was hard to say. Yet they were reviled. Still, they broadened their horizons, mixing up their weird full-on frantic hardcore style with some Tex-Mex, some bluegrass, and a little desert sun. The result? The cultural icon Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Country meets punk
Alongside Dylan, the magnificent Byrds in Sweetheart of the rodeo, invented country-rock. Meat Puppets invented country-punk. And if their first Meat Puppets still has the rash and hardcore garage feeling (i like it but it's true, the singing is terrible, drunk-drugged for sure), in this second Meat Puppets, the words now are intelligible and intelligent, by the way. Perfect for a desert long day ride, crossing old highways where Big Silence deserves to be broken. Thanks Kurt Cobain wherever you are for letting me now this guys.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just A Trend
This band is seriously nothing but a trend. I guarantee you, no one is going to listen to As I Lay Dying ten years from now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect.
This is their best album ever. nothing comes close to it. Every song is perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet
One of my favorite bands of all time. This album is amazing. Full of energy, brutallity, and thought filled lyrics. The first mainstream album by one of the most recognized bands in metal today As I Lay Dying. This is the album that really got them were they are today. Get it!! Its and amazing album!! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this cd-you'll regret it
Wow, I hope Precious M was joking when she/he said that the lead singer would brag about how he's a "musical genious". Musical idiot is more like it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still a good Buy
When i firsted listened to it i put it away and didn't both with putting it on again untill i ripped it to a mp3 cd for the car and now that it has grown on me it has become one regular tunes for my ears. looiking at there other cd's it's still not the best but if you do like some of there Songs then it's still a good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good CD, from a not so good band.
Stories and Alibies is an excellent album. It's origional, catchy. Upbeat, and carries a beat. What is a joke is the band. They suck live. I give their crew a lot of credit for making this album sound good. Becuase they didn't sound good live, and they sound good on here. They are deffinately an album band. Good on CD, bad in person. Also, their other releases suck. They are a one hit wonder. They need to see what style works for them, and what doesn't. On their first ep, they tried to be screamo, and it was disgusting. Un orgional, he has a terrible screamo voice. Than on their full length, they went to emo, smart choice. He has great melody. Turned out to be a great CD, than their new CD (which isn't out yet, I downloaded it. It's called Voices), Is completely awful. They are now a weird rock style, which is neither instrumentally impressive, nore vocally impressive. It's garbage. I've lost respect with them. I like when bands change styles and all, if it's for the better. But if you have a good formula, why change? Buy this album and none of their others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great stuff!
This is a great album with some of the best punk songs I have heard. Stuck a nerve is probably my favourite cut on the album, with American Jesus and Recipe for Hate following behind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me want to mosh
"recipe for hate","American Jesus", "modern day catastrophits" are all bad ass songs that have good guitar riffs. See with me, punk rock is all about how the music jumps into your veins and makes you want to get up and break stuff. I listen to lyrics too, but the guitar is such a great instrument. Greg Graffen drives me nuts with his hand gestures and he just looks retarted, but Bad Religion is one of the best bands ever. This CD is awesome, like i said it makes me want to mosh, great punk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their best album...
Are Generator, Suffer, Against the Grain, and No Control also excellent albums? Surely, though Generator a little short for me. Hell their last two albums Process of Belief and Empire Strikes First are even return to form. Their pre-suffer stuff has the occasional gem as well and Stranger Than Fiction isn't terrible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Cali Punk-Metal Synthesis
Agent Orange (they came from Orange County) weren't punk, weren't metal, and weren't surf revival. Yet they had bleak near-metal outlook and riffage a bit above punk's two chord grind, speed like punk and attitude & angst like punks, and they dug classic surf instrumentals. This is Underground at its best. Agent Orange, for all the bleakness of their lyrics, were much lighter than other bands of the Hardcore Punk scene (that's the genre they were lumped in with, but like I said, they weren't punk). They had a typical dude persona that was covered by the anger of their singer/guitarist Mike Palm's songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars How underrated can a band be....
when an album that is far better than anything from the 80's barely gets any recognition? Agent Orange is one of the best bands that never got the credit they deserved. Buy this album if you even kinda like surf-punk, such as that "Wipeout" song from the Surfaris (note that every song on this album is by far better than "Wipeout")
3-0 out of 5 stars So so
Not a bad album, but not all that great either.Bloodstains is a classic, but the rest of the album is listenable, but mediocre. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How I Spent The Best 5 Dollars Of My Life
Ventura, circa 2004. My first experience with the Souls was an unexpected one after hearing a set of theirs at Warped. The songs they sang sounded breathtaking and uplifting... the kind of songs that make your heart beat faster and get you excited. The first thing I did after witnessing this spectacle was to rush over to their booth and buy a cd. I chose this. Now, a couple years later and having heard everything they have released... this remains the best. It is more polished then anything prior and just plain better than their latest two (which are also great).
5-0 out of 5 stars guaranteed to keep you bouncing from start to finish
I believe that this is by far the band's best work. The album is full of catchy and upbeat anthems. Yes, anthems. These are songs that you will sing out in your room or chant along with in your car. From beginning to end, this album delivers a surge of positive energy that never lets you down. This cd will lift your spirits as well as your heart rate. Greg's voice carries beautifully, while still staying true to their punk rock sound. The Pete's guitarwork is fairly simple, but holds the songs up, nonetheless. Bryan's bassage is innovative and catchy, and rolls on flawlessly through every track. And Michael's drumming is spot-on and aggressive, and it totally keeps you movin'. One of my favorite things about the Bouncing Souls is their lyrics, which are real and easy to relate to. They sing of good and bad times, old friends and new ones, love lost and love found, and about reconnecting with the things that make you happy. "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" will get you through the day floating on a cloud of pure liveliness and bliss. Who wouldn't love that? It's hard to narrow down my favorites on this album, but they'd have to be "Private Radio", "Lifetime", "Broken Record", "Late Bloomer", and "The Something Special". It's great stuff so go buy it!! And also, if you get the chance to see these guys live, go for it! Their live show is just as promising if not more than this album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Always raises my spirits.
Alot of my Cd collection Is dark(Darkthrone,Burzum)Depressing(Skinny puppy, wumpscut)Angry(black flag,Slayer) and Heavy and fast(Agoraphobic nosebleed, exhumed) But This album and other BS albums Are always a breath of fresh air. With light lyrics about love, freindship(Manthem is the ultimate drinking song when your with the guys) and BMX bikes Its hard to be in a frumpy mood listening to them. Its fun,Its up beat and If you don't want to get up and jump around or dance. You might be dead. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars a boring album through and through
i really tried my hardest to get into this album, but as much as i tried, it always left a stale and un-remarkable taste in my mouth...dont get the alternative tentacles version, just don't get it period! yeah, frankenchrist and bedtime for democracy are a bit better, but they still arent spectacular at that....to me, DK was really a one album wonder band with their amazing album "fresh fruit.." that one is all you really need from this band...maybe frankenchrist if you cannot get enough of fresh fruit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic
